Nico holds a BFA in Graphic Design with an emphasis on New Media (web and video), which was a brand-new program at the time. Through the years, he has morphed into a web developer who also uses his new media skills in his everyday work and home life. “If I don’t have photoshop open at work mocking up web layouts or designing a flyer for digital signage, I’m at home digitally prepping my fine art,” he says. “The digital arts have such a broad range usage it can be translated through work or home. Retirement can be a richly rewarding experience, a time to revisit previous dreams, begin new projects and rewrite our futures. Julia Cameron says all it takes to rediscover creativity are passion, commitment and the courage to be a beginner. Each class meeting will include time for sharing experiences, goals and individual journeys to nurture personal creativity and inspire others. The Growth of Abstraction 1950-Present is the second part of the course that introduced the exciting and controversial twentieth century art world as artists moved away from representational to abstract work. In the previous class we studied the major artists and movements that introduced a departure from portraying reality and instead focused on using color, shape, form and line to capture their inner spirit and achieve their effect. In this followup course, we will start with Abstract Expressionism and continue studying the variations in this style through contemporary mainstream and fringe multicultural abstract artists, including the San Francisco School, the Bay Area Abstract Expressionists, The New York School, the Taos Moderns, Native American Painters and Northwest Artists. We will examine the work in relation to concurrent historical, social and technological developments. In addition, we will review the terminology and language of abstraction to better describe, understand and analyze the works we study. Textbook, World of Art: Abstract Art, Anna Moszynska, 2020. Introduction to Upholstery Transform a stuffed chair with fresh fabric and piping into a snazzy new addition to your home. We’ll work through the steps of reupholstering by removing the old fabric, adding new foam (if necessary), sewing the piping and seat cushion and applying the new fabric. We will be using a staple gun, rather than old school upholstery tacks. You will need a sewing machine, scissors, pliers, staple gun, staples, chair, enough fabric to cover the chair and any necessary new foam or batting. The first session will cover removal, pattern making, addition of foam and making your own piping. The second session will cover sewing the bottom cushion (and any other sewn details) and re-upholstery of the remaining surfaces. Prerequisite: basic sewing skills. Please note, a chair with button tufting is much more advanced and will require an additional long needle tool. If this is your first project of this kind, you may want to avoid a chair with such details. See www.learnatnorth.org for supply list. 20448 10/23/2021 - 10/30/2021 10:00AM - 2:00PM 2 ses Sa Norsworthy Online; Zoom $85

ENRICHMENT Understanding Trauma Through lecture, discussion and group interaction, students will gain a greater understanding of what trauma is and how it affects people, including their behaviors, thought processes and feelings. The discussion will include viewing trauma in the short, intermediate and long terms. Much of the generally available information on trauma is misleading and simply inaccurate, so this course will provide a concrete definition of trauma and its different levels (i.e. the trauma continuum). The course will look at the interventions, therapies and support that are most likely to help persons impacted by trauma, and also the potential limitations and risks with those efforts. We’ll address issues such as symptom management versus healing, the role of diagnosis and advanced topics of cultural and intergenerational trauma. One outcome of the course is for registrants to more fully understand what it means for a practice or an organization to be truly “trauma-informed.” No class 10/28 or 11/25/21. 19674 10/14/2021 - 12/2/2021 6:30 - 8:30PM 6 ses Th Sideman Online; Zoom $175
