Schlock Cinema: The Deadliest of the Species

ENRICHMENT

Women, monsters and monster women comprise spring’s Schlock Cinema. First up, The Last Woman on Earth (1960) from undisputed progenitor of the schlock/camp genre, Mr. Roger Corman and co-sting Robert Towne (screenwriter of Mission Impossible and Chinatown) who also penned the screenplay. Talk about your Schlock Renaissance Men. Next, Invasion of the Animal People (1962), produced by Jerry Wen (Teenage Zombies). It concerns a gigantic, inarticulate, wooly monster who falls for a figure skating champion played by Barbara Wilson (Lost, Lonely and Vicious). Love’s boundaries were never so fuzzy. Next, stop your ears for The Screaming Skull (1960) in which a woman returns from the dead to haunt her deceitful lover. It will rattle your cranium. Immediately thereafter is The Devil Girl from Mars the tale of a beautiful Martian woman in a tight rubber outfit on a mission to abduct men to repopulate her home planet. Inexplicably, she lands no takers! We close out the quarter with Frankenstein’s Daughter (1958) a film undoubtedly screened on late night TV more than any other in broadcast history. It is the tale of a certain infamous doctor’s great, great, great grandson determined to create a perfect and compliant being by inserting his girlfriend’s brain into a hideous reanimated male body.
