Sites & Monuments CITADELLE DE VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-MER Surplombant l’une des plus belles rades du monde, Villefranche-sur-Mer et sa Citadelle du XVIème siècle, classée monument historique, vous offrent un cadre exceptionnel et inattendu. En 1543 c'est la guerre sur notre rivage, les 110 galères de Barberousse débarquent à Villefranche, razziant, brûlant et dévastant tout sur leur passage. Précoce exemple de fortification bastionnée, la Citadelle de Villefranche-sur-Mer est construite à partir de 1554 sur des plans de Gian Maria Olgiatti ingénieur italien à la solde de Charles Quint afin de prévenir tout assaut venant de la mer. Depuis le rattachement de la Savoie à la France en 1860, la Citadelle a servi de cantonnement militaire au 24ème Bataillon des Chasseurs Alpins. En 1965, le conseil municipal en place rachète la Citadelle. Sa restauration est entreprise en 1979. En 1981, le conseil municipal décide d’y installer l'Hôtel de ville et un centre culturel (Musées, Auditorium, Théâtre de Verdure). Overlooking one of the most beautiful harbors in the world, Villefranche-sur-Mer and its 16th century Citadel, listed as a historic monument, offer you an exceptional and unexpected setting. In 1543, war broke out on our shores as 110 Barbarossa galleys landed in Villefranche, raiding, burning and devastating everything in their path. The Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer, a precocious example of a bastioned fortification, was built in 1554 according to the plans of Gian Maria Olgiatti, an Italian engineer in the pay of Charles V, in order to prevent any assault from the sea. Since Savoie became part of France in 1860, the Citadelle has been used as a military base by the 24th Battalion of Alpine Chasseurs. In 1965, the city council bought the Citadel. Its restoration was undertaken in 1979. In 1981, the city council decided to install the City Hall and a cultural center (Museums, Auditorium, Théâtre de Verdure). Accès libre. Free access. Sont exposées une centaine d’œuvres de Christine Boumeester et Henri Goetz… Sont exposées une centaine d’œuvres de Christine Boumeester et Henri Goetz, mais également quelques œuvres souvenir de grands maîtres contemporains que les époux ont côtoyés ou fréquentés (PICASSO, PICABIA, MIRO, HARTUNG). Are exhibited about fifty works by Christine Boumeester and almost as many by Henri Goetz... Sites & Monuments LA CHAPELLE SAINT PIERRE "COCTEAU" La chapelle Saint-Pierre de Villefranche-sur-Mer est un lieu sacré. Décorée à l'extérieur et à l'intérieur par Jean Cocteau, avec notamment des illustrations de la vie de l'Apôtre Pierre, Patron des pêcheurs. Lieu de culte à son début. Après un incendie, elle sert alors de réserve pour le matériel de pêche (filets etc). Elle abrite aussi le Tribunal de Pêche, dénommé "prud’homie des pêcheurs". Alors résident chez Madame Francine Weisweiller, à St. Jean-Cap-Ferrat, et après avoir reçu l'aval des pêcheurs, Jean Cocteau décore l'extérieur et l'intérieur de la chapelle entre 1956 et 1957. On peut y découvrir aujourd'hui des passages de la vie de St Pierre (patron des pêcheurs), les chandeliers de l’apocalypse (cuits dans les fours de Valbonne), des scènes locales (hommages aux Saintes Maries de la Mer et aux Demoiselles de Villefranche). L' EGLISE SAINT MICHEL L’édifice fut construit au XVIII ème siècle (1757). Messe le dimanche à 10h et le jeudi à 18h30. Située au cœur de la ville, l'église St Michel présente tous les traits d’un style baroque dépouillé. Elle renferme de nombreuses richesses : Les orgues des Frères Grinda (restaurées en 1982, classées monuments historiques en 1990) comptent parmi les plus anciennes des Alpes-Maritimes (1790). Au fond du chœur, un grand tableau représente le Saint Patron, Saint Michel. Un Christ gisant, grandeur nature, sculpté dans une seule pièce de bois de figuier, au visage empreint de sérénité, témoigne selon la légende de la foi ardente d’un galérien inconnu. It contains many riches: The Grinda Brothers' organ (restored in 1982, classified as an historic monument in 1990) is among the oldest in the Alpes-Maritimes (1790). At the back of the choir is a large painting representing Saint Michael, the patron saint. A serene-faced, life-size recumbent Christ, carved from a single piece of fig tree wood reflects, according to legend, the ardent faith of an unknown galley-slave. Abbé Lorenzoni Square. Accès libre. Sites & Monuments LA RUE OBSCURE La Rue Obscure est un lieu magique qui vous replonge dans l'atmosphère du Villefranche médiéval. Située le long du premier rempart, la rue Obscure (XIVème siècle) était au début non couverte et constituait la continuité du chemin de ronde défensif. Elle permettait la circulation des militaires et facilitait les manœuvres. Elle est longue de 130m. Quatre portes permettaient l’accès à la cité, dont une est toujours visible : le Portal Robert . Par la suite, elle fit l’objet d’une urbanisation peu régulière pour combler le manque d’habitations se situant à la rue du Poilu. Elle est inscrite aux Monuments Historiques en 1932. Dans la Vieille Ville Rue Obscure is a magical place that brings back the atmosphere of medieval Villefranche. Located along the first rampart, the rue Obscure (14th century) was at first uncovered and constituted the continuity of the defensive roundabout. It allowed the circulation of the soldiers and facilitated the maneuvers. It is 130m long. Four doors allowed access to the city, one of which is always visible: the Portal Robert. Subsequently, it was the subject of an urbanization not very regular to fill the lack of houses located in the street of "Poilu". It was registered in the Historic Monuments in 1932. In the Old Town. LE PORT ROYAL DE LA DARSE - VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-MER Le port naturel est fortifié dès 1550 par les Ducs de Savoie. En 1713, ils portent désormais le titre de Rois de Sardaigne, la Darse devient alors « Port Royal ». A partir de 1730 commencent les grands travaux : construction du phare, du bassin de radoub, de l'arsenal et de la forge. Puis dès 1770, on y ajoute le bagne, la corderie et la caserne des officiers. Aujourd'hui, c'est un port de plaisance qui a su garder l'héritage de son histoire. Depuis février 1990, le Port Royal de la Darse est inscrit à l'inventaire des Monuments Historiques. The natural port was fortified in 1550 by the Dukes of Savoy. In 1713 onwards they carried the title King of Sardinia and the Darse thus became a "Royal Port". Beginning in 1730, the great works were started: the lighthouse, the dry-dock basin, the arsenal and the forge. Then, as early as 1770, were added the prison, rope factory and officers' barracks. Today, it is a marina that has managed to preserve the legacy of its history. Since February 1990, the Royal Port of "Darse" has been listed in the Historic Monuments Inventory. Accès libre. Le Combat Naval Fleuri Chaque année en février, le Combat Naval Fleuri, ravit petits et grands par son originalité. Véritable Bataille de fleurs sur l’eau, cette manifestation fait partie du programme du Carnaval de Nice. Au programme : parades, fanfares et en point d’orgue, les vingt "pointus" (barques traditionnelles) entièrement ornés de fleurs qui affrontent le public par des lancés d’œillets et de mimosa. Le Combat Naval Fleuri est la fête traditionnelle la plus emblématique de la ville puisqu'elle existe depuis 1902.
FLOWER PARADE ON THE SEA
Each year in February, the Flower Parade on the sea, delight young and old people by its originality. True Battle of flowers on the water, this event is part of the program of the Nice Carnival. The program includes: parades, brass bands and on top of that, the twenty "pointus" (traditional boats) fully adorned with flowers and facing the public throwing carnations and mimosa. The Flower Parade on the sea is the most emblematic traditional event of the city since 1902.
