Our phonics sample lesson is filled with fully annotated information - lesson plans, detailed teacher’s notes and photocopiable worksheets and resources - to show you just how easy and fun it is to use Jolly Phonics; the world-famous, multi-sensory phonics program proven to boost children’s reading and writing skills! This sample lesson will focus on the letter sound /r/.

Jolly Phonics uses the synthetic phonics method, which means that the letter sounds are taught first, on their own. Children are then taught to blend sounds together to say (‘synthesise’) the word.
There are five basic skills for reading and writing, each of which are incorporated within the Jolly Phonics program.
Children are taught to identify the 42 main letter sounds. This includes alphabet sounds and digraphs, such as /sh/, /th/, /ai/ and /ue/.
Learning letter formation
Using different multi-sensory methods, children learn how to form and write the letters.
Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.
Identifying the sounds in words
Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.
Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.

What a daily phonics lesson looks like:
Jolly Phonics has always focused on direct, explicit instruction of phonemic awareness and phonics for both reading (decoding) and writing (encoding). Each lesson begins with a story to strengthen phonemic awareness and encourage vocabulary development. The program teaches the students to say the individual sounds and blend them into a word for reading; for writing, the students listen for the sounds in a word and then write the letter(s) that represent those sounds and so spell the word. From the start, the lesson plans provide explicit direction and practice in letter formation and introduce segmenting and writing words at an early stage. As their letter-sound knowledge increases, the students are able to blend and segment more and more words automatically, as well as developing and extending their comprehension skills.
The Jolly Phonics Teacher’s Book contains a set of structured daily lesson plans, which correspond to the daily activities in the Jolly Phonics Pupil Books. The sample lesson plan below is for the letter sound /r/.

After a quick revision of previous letter sounds, and the introduction of the new letter sound /r/, children are given the opportunity to see and practise the letter formation. There are then multiple activities, which can be done as a class on the whiteboard, and printed for individual use later, to reinforce learning whilst practicing blending and segmenting skills. All of these slides are supported by printable teacher’s notes so that the lesson is easily planned with everything the teacher may need!

We also have lots of excellent supplemental resources which can be used to further consolidate children’s learning.
Picture Flashcards: On one side of the flashcard is the letter sound /r/ with a simple word written underneath that contains this letter sound. On the reverse of the card is a picture relating to the word, with dots which indicate the number of sounds in the word.
Jolly Phonics Cards: includes a flashcard with the letter sound /r/ as well as many regular word blending cards that contain this letter sound. It also includes flashcards with alternative vowel spellings and tricky words.
The workbook has a full page on the letter sound /r/ which includes a shortened version of the story to introduce the action - which is also included at the bottom with a description - along with an accompanying picture. On the adjacent page there are several activities including letter formation practice and words to blend.
In total, there are 7 workbooks covering all of the 42 letter sounds, including alternative spellings of vowels.
These exciting decodable word and reading books use words that are within reach of the children, using their letter sound knowledge and tricky words already taught. They are progressive, with each level building on the previous and gradually introducing more tricky words and the main alternative vowel spellings.
In total, there are 153 readers across all the levels, each containing enchanting stories along with tips and advice for teachers and parents.
Our diverse range of resources allows children’s learning to continue both inside and outside of the classroom. Whilst the teacher may wish to use these resources with their class or in small groups, many of these are brilliant resources to recommend to parents who are looking to support their child at home.
They provide a range of activities and stories to keep children engaged as they revise the letter sounds taught at school.
Children can listen to the song for the letter sound /r/. There are lyrics to the song to go along with the accompanying picture and the action. Children can learn the lyrics to sing along, as well as doing the action, to create multiple ways of learning the new letter sound. (Also available as an App for Apple and Android devices.)
In total, the book has a song for each of the 42 letter sounds, as well as several games and activities.
This double page spread has a picture to introduce the letter sound /r/, as well as displaying the storyline and action. The big books are perfect for use with the whole class to introduce the sound and action.
The letter sound formation on the smaller, board book is embossed, allowing each child to easily feel how to correctly form this letter sound.
