Jolly Phonics

The program trusted by thousands of teachers around the world Our program is used in over 150 countries worldwide, empowering thousands of teachers who transform children’s literacy ability. The program enables teachers to get their children reading and writing from an early age. As the leading synthetic phonics publisher, and the most experienced, we provide a 7-year program that takes children beyond phonics and integrates spelling, punctuation and grammar too!

How the program aligns with the Science of Reading • • • • • •

Systematic, synthetic phonics approach for teaching children to read, write and spell Multi-sensory lessons ensure children are taught decoding for reading and encoding for spelling Explicit instruction for teaching the 42 main sounds of English (including the alphabet) plus short and long vowels, digraphs and diphthongs Detailed teaching guidance to enable children to identify a sound wherever it is in the word Instruction and strategies for teaching irregular high frequency words Ample opportunity for children to apply their letter sound knowledge within each lesson aswell as through a range of decodable texts

Results that speak for themselves at Windham Primary School, ME Significant performance improvements Jolly Phonics had a significant impact on Windham Primary School in Southern Maine. Before implementing the program, only a few students read beyond level 4 in the Kindergarten Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). However, after adopting Jolly Phonics, many students reached DRA4 and even higher levels, with some reading a year or more above their grade level. This new approach reduced below-grade-level numbers by one-third compared to 2017, and by over one-half compared to 2016 and 2018. Moreover, the percentage of students ending their kindergarten year above grade level more than doubled compared to 2017 and tripled compared to 2016 and 2018.

On average, the number of students performing well below or below the benchmark dropped from 55% to 27%, while the number of students performing above the benchmark rose from 17% to 46%.

Julie Young, Instructional Leader:

Dr Kyle Rhoads, Principal:

“The first year of implementation was wildly

“Jolly Phonics quickly changed the way our teachers teach, our learners learn and our mindset about how much kindergarteners can and will learn! This systematic program increased the letter sound acquisition across all types of children. Learners get excited about the lessons and teachers are amazed at how much more kindergarteners can learn with Jolly Phonics.”

successful as our students were excited about the lessons and reading achievement data soared. Our end of year Kindergarten DRA2 benchmark is a level 4. In previous years only a handful of students read beyond a DRA level 4 and now we have students who are reading beyond level 4 with many reading a year or more above grade level. Our data was compelling enough to extend Jolly Phonics into our first grade classes.”

What a daily phonics lesson looks like: Jolly Phonics has always focused on direct, explicit instruction of phonemic awareness and phonics for both reading (decoding) and writing (encoding). Each lesson begins with a story to strengthen phonemic awareness and encourage vocabulary development. The program teaches the students to say the individual sounds and blend them into a word for reading; for writing, the students listen for the sounds in a word and then write the letter(s) that represent those sounds and so spell the word. From the start, the lesson plans provide explicit direction and practice in letter formation and introduce segmenting and writing words at an early stage. As their letter-sound knowledge increases, the students are able to blend and segment more and more words automatically, as well as developing and extending their comprehension skills. 4

Continuous revision and consolidation of topics previously taught

Enables you to teach the 5 key skills needed for reading and writing. 1. Learning the letter sounds Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds. This includes alphabet sounds and digraphs, such as /sh/, /th/, /ai/ and /ue/. 2. Learning letter formation Using different multi-sensory methods, children learn how to form and write the letters. 3. Blending Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words. 4. Identifying the sounds in words Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling. 5. Learning tricky words Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.

Letter sound order

Additional topics covered in these resources Alternatives

The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). The first group has been chosen as it makes more simple three letter words than any other six letters. This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

Read and See Books Ideal for blending and sounding out words. The Read and See books contain regular words that can be read by sounding out and blending. There is one word on each page. Children read the word, and turn to the page to see if they are correct by looking at the picture. The word is shown again in sound dots underneath the picture so that the children can learn to sound out the word after reading.

A whole-school approach to high-quality literacy teaching

Phonics & Grammar

The program continues through the school years, by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts. Each year of teaching provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught in previous years. This enables children to spell and punctuate more accurately, use a wider vocabulary and have a clear understanding of how language works. Sample pages show how phonics, grammar, spelling and punctuation concepts are introduced through the program. These pages are from the Phonics and Grammar Student Books. The same content can also be found in the Phonics and Grammar Handbooks.

Phonics (K Class) Children are taught the 42 letter sounds, how to write them, how to blend the sounds for reading and how to identify the sounds in words for spelling and writing. Alongside this children learn about tricky words as well as being introduced to the alternative spellings of vowels.

Grammar (Grades 1-6) Children are introduced to parts of speech to include nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. Colors and actions are used to help children identify parts of speech in sentences.

The examples above show how children are taken through the various forms that verbs may take.

32

Spelling (Grades 1-6) Children are initially taught one way of spelling a sound before gradually learning that the same sound can be represented in a number of different forms. They start with the common variations, before progressing to other, more unusual spelling patterns that occur as the children develop their vocabulary for reading and writing.

The examples above show how children are taken through the different spellings of the /ai/ sound.

Children are introduced to punctuation concepts and continue to revise these throughout the school years. Starting with full stops and speech marks, children will then learn how to use exclamation and question marks, colons and semi-colons, hyphens, commas, bullet points and much more.
