Benefits of steaming your hay. For your horse: Up to 1 in 6 horses in the UK are diagnosed with Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO) and that 80% of horses stabled part of the time suffer some degree of airway inflammation. For your wallet: An epidemiological study found respiratory problems in racehorses to be the second highest reason for lost training days. Thus, a dusty stable environment can have serious health and financial implications for all equestrian establishments. As it is a non-invasive, nonpharmaceutical medical treatment, using Haygain steamers is a legal way to maximise performance with no danger of doping.

Size Is Everything. Are you treating your horse for a respiratory condition? If so here are a couple of points to consider, if you have not done so already: • Is the respiratory condition an upper or lower respiratory condition? • How are you (and/or your vet) treating the condition eg injection, puffer or nebuliser? • What part of the respiratory system does that medication need to target to be effective in treating your condition? • If you are using a puffer or nebuliser do you know what particle size that device is producing and is this targeting the condition you are trying to treat?
WHY I hear you ask!!! • If you are trying to treat a lower respiratory condition via puffer or nebulisation, ideally the aerosol particle size should be between 1 – 5 microns. ASK the supplier! If it’s greater than 5 microns, then it probably isn’t doing the job. The particle size of the aerosol is critical to ensure the lung absorbs the medication. • If you are using injectables, to treat a respiratory condition eg antibiotics, corticosteroids or bronchodilators, there is a very good chance that the injectable that you are using can be nebulised AND you will need considerably less medication to nebulised (generally about 80% less).
