Our promise to you and your parents is simple: At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people.®

HPU faculty and staff are obligated to honor this promise. However, the success of the “HPU Experience” is based on the idea that we see not an obligation but an opportunity. We see the opportunity to promote learning as a lifelong endeavor to be relished! We see the opportunity to prepare you for a life of success and significance. We see the opportunity to model the values of service, generosity, gratitude, fellowship and joy. And we will surround you with heroes, models and mentors.

High Point University is an EXTRAORDINARY institution, an INSPIRING institution and a CARING institution because each member of our faculty and staff is passionate about the opportunity we have to positively impact your life.

While faculty and staff are here to help you on your journey, remember that this is a partnership. To succeed, you will need to work hard, prepare, study, give back and commit to purposeful collaboration with faculty and fellow students. We will support you on this journey, but your choices will determine your path.

When you arrive in a few weeks, challenge yourself to meet every moment with the spirit of opportunity. Challenge yourself to live by our call to action: Choose to Be Extraordinary!®

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM

There are numerous ways your family can get involved with High Point University to further enrich the opportunities for students like yours. We encourage you to support High Point University by:

• Serving as an Admissions Advocate by identifying potential students or volunteering for recruiting events.

• Providing internship or professional development opportunities for our students through your network as a Career Connector. Help to expand the opportunities available to students and increase their ability to prepare to enter the professional world after graduation.

• Investing in student scholarships. Gifts of all levels enable the University to continue providing more than $75 million dollars in scholarship support. Help students who may not otherwise be able to experience the innovative academic environment and values-based learning opportunities offered through High Point University’s education by becoming involved at a leadership level through the President’s Leadership Cabinet.

The Family Engagement Program is a valuable resource during your student’s time at HPU. To learn more about becoming involved, visit engage.highpoint.edu/family or contact Amanda Arnold, Coordinator of Development Operations in the Office of Institutional Advancement at 336-841-9731 or family@highpoint.edu

PEER MENTORS

All freshmen students at High Point University will be assigned a Peer Mentor. Peer Mentors are returning students who have volunteered to assist new students in their transition to HPU. Peer Mentors serve as a familiar face on campus, offering you support and guidance. Peer Mentor groups are organized by residence hall communities.

Make sure to check your HPU email and cell phone! Peer Mentors will reach out via email, phone calls and text messages on a rolling cycle during the month of July to connect with you!

COMMUNITY MEETINGS

Students will meet with their Resident Assistant to build relationships with their floor and discuss important information related to living oncampus. These meetings are mandatory, and the location will be shared with students by their Resident Assistant.

August 21st; 6 pm

September 25th; 9 pm

December 4th; 9 pm

January 8th; 9 pm

April 8th; 9 pm

PANTHER CHATS

Panther chats are one-on-one intentional conversations between Resident Assistants and residents that allow students to actively reflect on their experience at HPU and set goals for the future. Questions focus on assessing community engagement, cultivation of life skills, values and character development, and intercultural competence. Through these meetings, students will be connected with different resources on campus as they navigate the transition to college life and become engaged in and outside of the classroom.

COMMON GOOD SERVICE PROJECT

We are asking all incoming students to bring a new copy of their favorite book from their childhood or adolescence. On Sunday afternoon, students will write an inspirational message inside the book that will then be delivered to HPU’s Community Writing Center and local elementary and middle schools to supplement their libraries.

ROOM CONDITION REPORTS

As students move into their assigned living space, we require them to complete their Room Condition Report (RCR). Our Campus Enhancement team works hard throughout the summer to prepare all students’ rooms for move-in; however, if there are any issues with maintenance or housekeeping in the room you should note this in the RCR. Failure to complete the RCR for your room would waive the right for you to challenge any fines upon move-out.

ROOMMATE WORKBOOK

Living in a shared space with others is a unique experience our students are able to be a part of. The Office of Residence Life staff are prepared to assist students with this transition to make their residential experience as successful as possible.

The roommate workbook is an online tool through eRezLife that helps guide conversations between roommates and housemates with topics related to living in a shared space. This workbook is where students will house the guidelines they determine as a result of these conversations. If the workbook needs to be referred to for any reason, all students will have access to view and revise it through their eRezLife account. All students sharing any living space are required to complete this workbook at the beginning of the academic year.

ENGAGEMENT

BEYOND WELCOME WEEK

Connecting on Campus: HPU offers many opportunities to meet new people, develop new skills or simply learn about other cultures. We know that successful students are involved students and the programs described below provide opportunities for students to strengthen their involvement as members of the HPU family.

ROPES COURSE AT HPU ESTATE

The ropes course provides an intense partnering experience which dramatically highlights the objectives of teamwork, cooperation, trust, communication and adventure. Each participant is presented with a powerful experience challenging them to learn, grow and enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills on high and low course activities.

1924 PRIME, ALO & KAZOKU

1924 Prime, Alo and Kazoku proudly host the Life Skills development program titled “Your Professional Brand Series.” Hosted by the Career and Professional Development Office, HPU faculty and industry professionals, the series propels students forward on their professional journey with programming that includes topics like “Crush the Dinner Interview,” “Dress for Success,” “Leadership and Life Skills” and “Pathway to Professionalism.”

As part of the “Culture and Cuisine Series,” students can experience authentic international or regional cuisines and learn about the culture that defines the location. In addition to offering an alternative menu that celebrates the month’s theme, students will enjoy faculty forums and live music events that reflect the culinary delight of the month. Reservations and a meal plan are required for these programs. Countries featured include:

• China

• Brazil

• Germany

• India

RESEARCH ROOKIES

As you enter college, you start to consider what major you will choose. Students expect college majors to prepare them for jobs and advancement in their chosen careers, but the major is just a small part of what makes you prepared for the job market. A major may give you specific technical skills for one career path, but college is about preparing you for a lifetime of career possibilities.

Thus, it is important to engage in experiences outside of the classroom that will help differentiate you from over 2 million students you will graduate among across the country in four years. One opportunity that stands out as transformative is independent mentored research or creative work. Over 87% of employers say they are more likely to hire and advance recent college graduates who have this experience.

PROJECT DISCOVERY

HPU'S PLAN FOR UNDECLARED STUDENTS

Nationally, an estimated 50% of students enter college undecided on their major. In addition, an estimated 75% of students change their major at least once before graduating. HPU’s Project Discovery provides the guidance and resources that students need to discover their passion and achieve their goals.

For more information go to www.highpoint.edu/projectdiscovery

IT STARTS WITH YOU AND YOUR SUCCESS COACH

As an undeclared student, you will partner with a Success Coach who is passionate about helping you discover a major that is a great fit for you, while helping you make positive connections with organizations on campus in which you have interest. This happens as early as the December before you enroll — for early decision admitted students — or the March before for regular admitted students. You will have support and guidance from a caring Coach who understands the various options available to you.

Check out the eight “Light Bulb” Moments of Project Discovery—your guide to uncovering your academic passion. 1 2

THERE’S A CLASS FOR THAT!

Enroll in Exploring Your Major and Career Path, the one-credit course designed to help you explore your options. A Career Advisor will guide you through self-reflection and assessment tools such as PathwayU. You’ll also be able to connect with professionals in fields you are thinking about to ask thoughtful questions and learn more.

THEY’VE WALKED IN YOUR SHOES.

You aren’t the only student who entered college as undeclared — in fact, it is common across the entire nation! Sometimes we learn best from someone like us — a peer. First-Year Navigators are HPU students selected by the Office of Student Success to mentor first-year students. As an undeclared student, you will be connected with FirstYear Navigators who were once undeclared, too. They know exactly what you are going through and will help you explore your options.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH THIS MAJOR?

When you find a major that seems great, you will want to also understand what you do with that degree once you graduate. HPU’s Career Advisors and their Career Development website will help you understand how your major translates to real-world career paths.

WHAT’S MY MAJOR WEDNESDAY

CAREER & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ADVISORS: YOUR PEOPLE

You’ll see them in some of your classes and engage with them in Cottrell Hall. Your Career Advisor will explain the many resources available to you in the Career Center — the headquarters of the years of support and guidance that might lead to your face landing on the HPU Young Alumni Career Wall!

Throughout each semester, faculty members host opportunities to meet with students who may have questions about a specific major. Casual in nature, these interactions allow you to connect with faculty, learn more about various majors and identify best-fit majors! You can attend as many of these meetings as you want, and you always have the opportunity to visit with a professor one-on-one to discuss opportunities within a major.

As globalization continues to blur geographic and cultural boundaries, a new world has begun to emerge. The faculty and staff at High Point University believe that global awareness and intercultural understanding are essential parts of higher education for today’s student. Therefore, the University encourages students to engage in academic study in a culturally-immersive setting away from one’s home culture and norms. Whether you are abroad for two weeks, two semesters or any length in between, studying abroad provides:

A growth mindset opportunity to:

n Get outside your comfort zone and see a different perspective

n Gain independence and selfconfidence

n Become immersed in a different culture and learn to observe and adapt

An academic opportunity to:

n Complete courses toward your major, minor or general education requirements

n Improve your foreign language skills

A professional development opportunity to:

n Build intercultural sensitivity

n Become globally competitive through transferrable skills such as cross-cultural communication and teamwork

OUR CITY. OUR UNIVERSITY.

WHEN YOU VISIT THE CITY OF HIGH POINT YOU IMMEDIATELY KNOW YOU ARE WELCOMED HERE.

The university is celebrated in the Piedmont Triad International Airport when you arrive, and purple HPU flags fly across the city with the “We Heart HPU” signs that businesses proudly display.

Through the “Our City. Our University.” program, local businesses in High Point proudly support the university through banners, flags, umbrellas and more that the university supplies. This welcomes the university’s 100,000 annual visitors and helps students feel connected when they frequent their favorite restaurant or retailer and see HPU represented.

Nearly 100 local businesses are also “Passport Partners” who accept the HPU Passport Card as payment. This program connects local businesses with a thriving university community.

Weekly shopping shuttles also provide free transportation for students to High Point businesses. It all reflects a strong partnership between the university and the city—each supports the other.

For more information on High Point, our community and our Passport Partners, visit www.highpoint.edu/community or download the HPU App.

3 MILLION

HOURS OF SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY

The HPU family dedicates 500,000 hours of annual service, totaling 3 million hours of service since 2005. According to the United Way’s valuation of service hours, that translates into an impact of more than $24 million.

Alumni will retain their HPU email address indefinitely.

Access email on or off-campus online through the Portal or from a mobile device.

Visit service.highpoint.edu for more information about setting email up on your individual devices.

INFORMATION SECURITY

Students should be cautious of the types of content downloaded while on the web. Viruses and other malicious programs result from visiting certain websites, downloading software, plugging in portable drives and clicking on links in suspicious emails.

At High Point University, students are required to maintain an active anti-virus software to help prevent these types of unwanted attacks. You can find the link to download OIT’s recommended free personal anti-virus software on service.highpoint.edu by searching anti-virus.

Through Starfish, faculty and university administrators can refer students to the appropriate support resource. Students have the ability to view all individuals who are in their ‘success network’ through Starfish allowing them quick and easy access to obtain the necessary support they may need. The goal of Starfish is to identify at-risk students as early as possible in the term to connect them with support in order to positively impact student success and persistence.
