A
t HPU, coaching starts for students before they arrive on campus. Each freshman is paired with their own Success Coach, a professional staff member who offers guidance, wise counsel and encouragement as soon as students enroll at HPU. Your student’s Success Coach will serve as an academic advisor, life coach, university liaison and activities coordinator. Further coaching is seen in the mentorship students receive from faculty mentors, peer mentors, academic advisors and career advisors. Support services such as an on-campus health clinic with a full-time medical doctor, residence directors, counseling services, religious life staff and more are available for students to pursue to ensure they feel at home. HPU surrounds students with caring heroes, models and mentors who connect with students as they prepare them to become future leaders. High Point University’s Access to Innovators Program allows students across campus to learn from global leaders such as Apple Cofounder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence; Netflix Co-founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence; ABC “Nightline” Co-anchor Byron Pitts, HPU’s Journalist in Residence; Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall, HPU’s Sports Executive in Residence; and more. High Point University’s Learning Excellence Program offers yet another level of coaching and mentorship. Learning Excellence is a fee-based, academic support program that provides comprehensive services for any student at High Point University. The program is beneficial for any student who needs help with transitioning to college, organization, time management, study skills or strategies to help with learning differences. The program can also be used for students who are preparing for graduate and professional school or a career and need help with applications, personal statements or interviewing. This impactful program of individualized support develops a learning action plan specific to each student, so they receive the personalized attention and the encouragement needed to be successful. To ensure your student gets exactly the right amount and type of support they need, the Learning Excellence Program offers four different plans based on your student’s needs. Meet once weekly with a Learning Excellence Specialist for a one-hour coaching session Access to unlimited professional tutoring
Priority class registration for the subsequent semester to secure your best schedule

Enrollment in ADV 1101 Foundations for Academic Success
Weekly Summary Report includes:

Three intensive one-hour academic coaching sessions taking place three days per week Students and families who choose this plan appreciate the consistency of the one-on-one coaching throughout each academic week Students will have access to unlimited professional tutoring, priority class registration for the subsequent semester to secure their best schedule, priority access to academic/life skills workshops and enrollment in ADV 1101 Foundations for Academic Success Weekly Summary Report includes: • grading update on all classes • academic tracking and coursework management • professional and peer tutoring feedback • detailed notes from the three one-hour meetings with the Learning Excellence Specialist, including an overall summary • report is available to parents at the end of each week The Academic Achievers Program is HPU’s most intensive academic support program where available slots are limited
LIFE SKILLS LEADER
A hybrid plan available to high academic achieving juniors and seniors who have successfully completed at least one year of Learning Excellence at either the Learning Accelerator or Academic Achiever Levels
Meet weekly for a half-hour with a Learning Excellence Specialist Access to two professional tutoring sessions per week: • one writing session and one math session • two writing sessions or • two math sessions Priority class registration for the subsequent semester to secure your best schedule Weekly Summary Report includes: • grading update on all classes • detailed notes from the half-hour meeting with the Learning Excellence Specialist, including an overall summary • report is available to parents at the end of each week • detailed notes from the professional tutoring sessions
The Life Skills Leader Program is HPU’s academic support program for students who have successfully completed one of the other two Learning Excellence programs. The Life Skills Leader program is appropriate for high academic achievers who want help with preparation for graduate or professional school. Academic skill development will not be a focus for this program, as these skills would have been mastered in the student’s previous Learning Excellence plan. Availability is limited.
GRADUATE SCHOOL & CAREER-FOCUSED A plan for high academic achieving juniors and seniors who have not participated in Learning Excellence and would like to receive assistance with preparing for life after graduation
Meet weekly for a half-hour with a Learning Excellence Specialist to prepare for life after graduation Access to three professional writing tutoring sessions per week focused on writing requirements for graduate school applications, including personal statements, essays, etc. Access to seminars focused on career and graduate school preparation Weekly Summary Report includes: • detailed notes from the half-hour meeting with the Learning Excellence Specialist • detailed notes from the professional tutoring sessions • report is available to parents at the end of each week
The Graduate and Career Track program in Learning Excellence is HPU’s support program for students who are preparing for life after graduation. Academic skill development will not be a focus for this program. A cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or above is required. The Graduate and Career Track program is for high academic achieving students who have not participated in Learning Excellence previously and are ready to prepare for their next journey. Availability is limited.

Whatever I was worrying about instantly went away, and she has helped me take everything step by step. She has been an intricate part of my success here.

The Learning Excellence Program not only guides your student, but THEY TEACH THEM STRATEGIES TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY. When your student is struggling, the Learning Excellence Specialist gives good advice on options to seek, and when they are soaring, the LE gives them praise. The bonus is also making sure your student is adapting and exploring from a social aspect. It’s a great program!

INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS AND
Students must be accepted to the university before applying to be in the program.
A separate $500 deposit is required to hold your student’s spot in Learning Excellence.
A family informational meeting is held to review expectations and goals prior to the start of the semester.
This program is in high demand, and there are limited spots available.
Students in Learning Accelerator and Academic Achiever are required to take ADV 1101: Foundations for Academic Success, a course designed to teach effective study skills, test preparation strategies and much more!
Students are expected to partner with support staff each week as they progress through the semester.

Q: Is the Learning Excellence Program only open to students with learning differences?
A: No! The Learning Excellence Program is for any student who feels that they need extra support and help with their academics. Whether they are managing learning differences or preparing for graduate school, students can benefit from the impactful services and strategies provided in this program.
Q. Is Learning Excellence support available for Summer Advantage and regular summer session courses?
A: Yes! Learning Excellence support is available for Summer Advantage, regular summer session courses and summer online courses. Because courses are accelerated, students meet/connect with their Learning Excellence Specialists twice a week for 30 minutes.
Q: How long is the commitment to the Learning Excellence Program?
A: The Learning Excellence Program is a semesterby-semester commitment. A student must renew the agreement for the following semester to hold their spot or may communicate to discontinue the program at the end of the semester.
Q: How often does a student meet with their Learning Excellence Specialist?
A: Required meetings occur weekly, the number of these meetings depends on the specific coaching plan your student has enrolled in through Learning Excellence.
Q: What information will I receive as a parent?
A: Learning Excellence Specialists send a weekly report each Friday detailing your student’s progress for that week, including successes, challenges and academic updates.
Q: How does the Learning Excellence Program and the Office of Accessibility Resources and Services (OARS) partner to support students?
A: The Office of Accessibility Resources and Services determines accommodations that each student receives. The Learning Excellence Specialists empower students to advocate for themselves as they utilize their accommodations for their academic success.
Q: Can my first-year student have a Learning Excellence Specialist and Student Success Coach?
A: Yes! Learning Excellence Specialists and Student Success Coaches partner together to assist students with their academic progress and persistence through the semester. They take a team approach to help our students develop important skills that are critical for their role as college students on campus.

LEARNING EXCELLENCE PROGRAM

After acceptance to the university, request the Learning Excellence Program Application at www.highpoint.edu/learningexcellence. Applications will be reviewed, and parents and their student will be notified of their enrollment status. Parents and their student will be contacted by their Learning Excellence Specialist prior to the start of the semester of program enrollment. Students are accepted until all openings are filled—space is limited and waiting lists will be formed when space is no longer available. Because it is rare for students to discontinue the program in the middle of the semester, wait-listed students may have to enroll the following semester.
