Point University CLASS OF 2028

I want to congratulate you on your acceptance into my home away from home, High Point University! Our university has given me the best years of my life. My name is Xuan Rui, and I am an international student from Taiyuan, China. Currently, I am a senior at HPU majoring in media production and entrepreneurship as well as philosophy.

I would love to share with you how High Point University has profoundly influenced my development and why HPU is the perfect fit for international students like you and me.

Why did you choose HPU?

When I was in high school, I subscribed to the Monday Motivations. I began to like HPU’s philosophy of innovation, which later became one of my core values as well. In addition, HPU was the only university in the area that offered the media production and entrepreneurship major.

What did you think when you first stepped on HPU’s campus?

I was fascinated by the campus environment; it was one of the prettiest and most unique college campuses that I have ever seen. People here were very friendly, which created a great first-impression for me.

Why should international students study at HPU? HPU gives you a unique experience that cannot be received anywhere else. It is a safe and intimate experience that will help international students best transition from their previous experience and quickly get familiar with American college life. There is also an excellent academic support system that will really help students stay on track and go beyond.

Why North Carolina, USA?

I like North Carolina for its mild weather and its rich history. I have personally traveled to Charlotte, Asheville, Wilmington, Durham, etc.; each of these cities give me a completely different feeling. There are

so many things to explore. High Point is indeed a very small town, but I like it because of its peacefulness during the year and its prosperity during furniture markets. The living expense here is also moderately lower compared to many cities and towns on the East Coast. In addition, the Piedmont Triad area is very internationally diverse. If I put myself out there and keep seeking opportunities, I will find myself surrounded by connections from all around the world.

How did HPU help you get where you are today? How did HPU prepare you for any future goals? HPU focuses on teaching life skills. Not only can I enjoy course materials instructed from a small class size, but I can also immerse myself into all the extracurricular and professional opportunities, like taking leadership in student organizations, going to internship fairs or having dinner interviews with industry leaders and national influencers. There are unlimited opportunities for me to learn and grow in every possible field if I prepare myself and look for them. Academic wise, I enjoyed working with my Success Coaches during freshman and sophomore year and my advisors currently. They value who I am and are willing to discover my potential with me. I was able to plan out my courses for my entire four years early on, therefore giving me a lot of extra time and energy to get involved with campus life in many other aspects.

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop so far that will prepare for your long-term success? PROFESSIONALISM. It is something that is easy to ignore, but so important. HPU asks every student to think, act and present themselves professionally; since my freshman year, there were workshops and seminars that trained me how to correctly write emails in academic and work settings, dress for interviews and work, act according to business etiquette, etc. These skills really helped me to become a better communicator and prepare me for the professional world post-graduation.

So far, who has been your most impactful mentor at HPU and why?

Dr. Palis, the assistant vice president of Global Education, has been my most impactful mentor in terms of leadership. Dr. Palis leads the campus with international vision and delicate work ethics. He mentored me during my experience working with the Global Student Association, Interfaith United and Chinese Culture Club. I had the honor of planning and organizing events with him and his team. I admire his passion for promoting inclusivity and bringing global perspectives into student’s education here. Under his mentorship, I became a better communicator and an effective leader.

What advice do you have for future international students?

Put yourself out there. Opportunities do not come bite your fishhook if you just sit around and wait; you must prepare yourself with vision and skills that will help you to achieve your vision. Get involved with campus life, take a leadership position in a student organization and network with accomplished peers and professionals. You never know which opportunities will become the pathway to your success; you never know how much inspiration you can receive from the next connection you make.

High Point University is preparing me far beyond what I could have imagined. Come join the HPU family!

Live Here. Love it Here.

You deserve to love where you live. That starts with your residence hall. Picture this: You just pulled up to your first college dorm with mom and dad. You’re leaving your home, friends and family for the first time. You aren’t just carrying plastic bins that are way too heavy from the car to your room. You’re carrying loads of anxiety, too.

Do you want to be greeted by a stuffy old dorm room that adds to that stress? NO WAY! Your residence hall is where you’ll be living. Your home away from home. At HPU, we understand your environment should reflect the incredible educational journey you’re embarking on.

Not only are HPU upperclassmen, staff and faculty on hand to unload ALL of your belongings for you and take them into your dorm room, but you’re also greeted with nationally ranked dorms. HPU knows you rise to the level of the environment in which you live.

Meet Your New Squad

You’ve spent your entire life at home, but now you’re deciding where you’re going to live for the next four years as a college student.

Think about this: There are 168 hours in a week. You’ll be in class approximately 20 of those. You’ll be dedicating the rest of your time to joining organizations on campus, conducting undergraduate research, cheering on the HPU Panthers award-winning basketball team, growing through experiential learning opportunities and making friends you’ll keep for the rest of your life.

HPU not only prepared me for this job through undergraduate and graduate course work but also through practical applications of knowledge. The amount of experience I had student teaching made me more qualified than other applicants in my field. The Office of Career and Professional Development helped me develop a resume that stood out to the international schools where I applied.

The physics and computer science departments at High Point University were such a huge factor in helping me land this amazing position at my dream company. Both in the classroom and outside of it, professors were always willing to help me work through my questions and provide insight on how to achieve my career goals.

High Point University showed me my academic potential and what I could achieve if I challenged myself every day. I learned through classes, professors and friends that I am capable of being so much more than what I gave myself credit for. It gave me self-confidence, which has helped me achieve my day-to-day tasks and my long-term goals.

HPU helped me achieve my goals through their holistic approach to a life skills education. I learned how to make myself a standout candidate for positions, inside and outside of the classroom. HPU has so many resources to advance you personally, professionally and spiritually.

5Student Success Coaches

At HPU, coaching for students begins before they arrive to campus. Each freshman is connected to a Success Coach, a professional staff member who offers guidance, wise counsel and encouragement, as soon as they enroll at HPU.

Further coaching is seen in the mentorship students receive from faculty and staff members. HPU students benefit from an ecosystem of mentorship and support. From career advisors to faculty advisors, peer mentors and even club sports (which have their own professional coaches), there is no shortage of opportunities for constructive feedback.

No one in life gets far without the help of others. HPU understands this. That’s why the university has forged a culture where students are surrounded by coaches who care.

16 | International Enrollment Guide Back to TOC

An HPU Success Coach is your guide through your transitional journey into college life. Here’s a glimpse at the important roles a Success Coach will play throughout your freshman year at HPU.

LIFE COACH:

When incoming freshmen arrive on campus, they experience a variety of emotions. Because it’s often their first time living away from home, students feel the need to quickly find their place at HPU. Success Coaches answer that call. Your Success Coach will encourage you to find your own niche on campus, as well as ways that you can apply and pursue your passions.

UNIVERSITY LIAISON:

A Success Coach will help you make connections with faculty and staff on campus. They can refer you to Career Services, Student Life, Counseling Services, Financial Aid and other offices on campus to ensure that you receive the support and encouragement you need.

ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR:

A Success Coach will assist in the implementation of programs and services designed to promote academic, personal and social/emotional success. They will encourage you to get involved in clubs, intramural sports or other campus activities as a means of staying engaged beginning your first year.

ACADEMIC ADVISOR:

Success Coaches meet with each freshman at Orientation to review their fall course schedule. Success Coaches also guide students in choosing classes for the spring semester and fall of sophomore year.

Your Class With the Nation’s Most Inspiring College President

At HPU, your foundation begins early for life skills, or what the business world sometimes calls “soft skills” — the ability to communicate with different people, present ideas clearly, work in a team, be coachable, be adaptable, problem solve and persevere.

Nowhere else will you take a first-year seminar for all freshmen, much less one led by a college president who’s launched businesses and acted as a consultant. All freshmen benefit from the fun and useful First-Year Seminar on Life Skills, led by HPU President Nido Qubein and featuring special, accomplished guests.

The weekly seminar focuses on topics such as fiscal literacy, persuasive speaking, the art of negotiating and how to embrace change. Qubein also discusses the “rule of thirds” — investing one-third of life in earning, one-third in learning and one-third in serving. If you can gain the level of life skills in college that would otherwise take years of experience to amass in the real world, you will stand out.

BONUS: This course also includes guest sessions led by global leaders in HPU’s unique Access to Innovators program. Students will get to learn from industry titans such as the co-founders of Apple and Netflix, the CEOs of Domino’s, the Dallas Mavericks and MyEyeDr., the former director of NBC’s “The Today Show” and many others!

Our investment in each student’s success goes much deeper than their discipline — we are committed to equipping students with the life skills necessary to be successful in their career and in life’s daily interactions.

HPU’s campus is filled with real-world facilities that further instill life skills. For example, 1924 PRIME and Alo, two fine-dining restaurants, allow HPU students to build confidence in professional settings beyond the office and gain international cuisine and culture experience. We use many other common exchanges and interactions to teach the art of persuasion, effective communication and other skills that help HPU students stand out.

While some universities provide an etiquette class during a student’s senior year, HPU provides students with four years of career preparation inside two different fine-dining restaurants. 1924 PRIME, HPU’s flagship restaurant, and Alo, HPU’s boutique hotel restaurant, provide the perfect atmosphere for students to engage in a unique type of learning laboratory. In addition to HPU’s two fine-dining restaurants, Panther Commons will be home to Kazoku, a family-style teppanyaki experience that also serves as a learning laboratory for students.

At 1924 PRIME, students practice their interview skills in a setting where they can develop confidence while at the same time gaining familiarity with international cuisine and culture. Similarly at Alo, students practice interviewing, focus on continental dining style and learn to be comfortable with European dining etiquette and protocol. Students dine at either restaurant once per week, which is included in the HPU dining plan.

When HPU graduates enter the workforce, they not only know how to ace the interview, but they’re also comfortable and confident in various business settings. This prepares them for a lifetime of success. Just picture it: after you accept the job offer, your boss asks you to take an international client to dinner. Or you’re meeting colleagues after work to offer a major proposal.

Accelerated Access to Research

At HPU, students are introduced to undergraduate research opportunities beginning their freshman year.

While many universities reserve research opportunities for upperclassmen or graduate students, HPU students are introduced to undergraduate research opportunities beginning their freshman year. Employers want graduates who can communicate well, be resilient and problem solve. Those are the foundational skills of conducting research. HPU provides research opportunities for students in every major, from being coached by a faculty researcher on campus to landing impressive research experiences for undergraduates (commonly called REUs) through institutions such as the National Science Foundation, Duke University, the American Institute of Physics, Columbia University and others.

The High Point University Research Rookies Program works to incorporate students into the university’s culture of research and creative work, early in their undergraduate careers. The program is designed to create a community of undergraduate scholars and help build research-related skills to prepare students for faculty collaborative scholarship that makes an original contribution to one’s field. Getting involved in research or creative works in college helps students build unique credentials to distinguish themselves from among the two million other students they will graduate among and compete with for jobs or entrance into graduate and professional schools!

Values-Based Living and Learning

You’ll first notice it when you drive onto campus.

A security officer smiling to greet you. A professor stooping down to pick up a stray piece of trash along the Kester International Promenade. The President of HPU waving as you walk to class. A student holding the door for you.

Those gestures happen every day on the campus of High Point University. While seemingly insignificant, they make a big impact.

Many schools forget that the most important aspect of your life is the values on which you stand. HPU’s campus is designed to inspire and we proudly celebrate faith, gratitude, patriotism, generosity, civility and more. As HPU President Nido Qubein often reminds faculty and staff, “You can’t teach values. Instead, we must model a values-based approach to life. Students watch, they listen and they learn.”

Faculty and staff model the values of service, joy, generosity, gratitude and respect because they know that students are paying attention to the actions of those around them.

High Point, North Carolina (and the Triad) Live Here. Love it Here.

Located in the Piedmont Triad, High Point is the only city to extend to four different counties in North Carolina! Being the ninth-largest city in the state, High Point is a city that people choose to live in, as it’s centrally located and has so much to offer. Greensboro and Winston-Salem are just a 20-minute drive, and Charlotte or Raleigh are about an hour away. The city claimed its name because it was the highest point for the North Carolina Railroad, allowing trade for goods and transportation.

Surrounding the stadium will be more than $80 million worth of newly constructed properties – a public plaza, offices, restaurants, retail shops, a hotel, an events center, a children’s museum, residential properties, and mixed-use properties. Great things are on the horizon for our booming city.

High Point Rockers Baseball

Enjoy a night under the lights at the High Point Rockers baseball game! Truist Point Stadium was completed in 2018 and has been a family favorite since. This Atlantic League of Professional Baseball team is sure to provide fun entertainment for the entire family, offering a playground within the stadium and a small splash park for the kids.

Furniture Market

Furniture Market is located in the furniture capital of the world, High Point, NC. This event happens annually in April and October, running one week in the fall, and two weeks in the spring.
