transformational EDUCATION

DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS

Our investment in each student’s success goes much deeper than their discipline — we are committed to equipping students with the Life Skills necessary to be successful in their career and in life’s daily experiences. We use common exchanges and interactions — an interview over a meal at a fine dining restaurant, for example — to teach the art of persuasion, effective communication and other skills that help HPU students stand out.

FOSTER YOUR VALUES & BUILD CHARACTER

High Point University is one of just 40 colleges and universities in the nation to receive the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement. It is in our DNA to graduate learned young people who are grounded in sound moral decision-making and framed with good character.

ENGAGE IN PRACTICAL EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Experiential learning accounts for 25% of the academic hours in each major at HPU. Students are educated in and out of the classroom through labs, studios, career shadowing, internships, research, study abroad opportunities and professional settings to gain real-world experience within their discipline.

EXPAND KNOWLEDGE THROUGH ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Become an expert in your major, taught by stellar faculty aided by top-notch resources. This is expected at top accredited universities around the world, and this is also where the academic model for many universities ends. At HPU, this is just the beginning.

HPU is a transformative place that can help you become who you were created to be.

Use the Journey Notes found throughout this transformational guide to consciously map your strategy for achieving a life of success and significance.

We encourage every student on our campus to dream big. And remember these words from HPU President Nido R. Qubein:

VIRTUALLY EVERY PIECE OF COLLEGE MATERIAL YOU RECEIVE IS ABOUT THE COLLEGE – NOT ABOUT YOU!

But at High Point University, we’re innovative and highly focused on helping you transform into the person you want to be.

So, throughout this book, we’ve included Journey Notes designed to help you stop and reflect on the type of person you want to be. Whether you enroll at HPU or not, these Journey Notes will help set you up for success. Our gift to you!

1.

The Journey Notes throughout include important questions you should ask yourself now. Questions include, “What companies or organizations would I be interested in working for someday?” and “What experiential learning opportunities are most important to my future?” Consider each important question NOW so you’ll be prepared once you begin your freshman year. By arriving to college prepared, you’ll maximize your experience and graduate ahead of the competition!

2.

Your present circumstances don’t determine where you go; they only determine where you start.
— Nido R. Qubein, HPU President

Interact with the lists provided in each Journey Note. Not only is space included for you to write your own goals and dreams, but HPU has also provided tons of options so you can know about exciting opportunities on the horizon.

HPU GRADUATES STAND OUT FROM THE SEA of new faces entering the workforce. Companies that employ HPU alumni and flock to campus to recruit students confirm this. That’s because the university’s educational model is grounded in Life Skills.

Students embark on a one-of-a-kind journey when they enroll at HPU. Each student has access to Student Success Coaches to guide them as they transition to college. They also have access to a team of advisors inside the Office of Career and Professional Development who help them build their marketability for internships and careers.

Through their coursework, much of which is dedicated to experiential learning, students begin to develop their portfolios and relationships with professors who embody a growth mindset.

They study abroad in other countries, conduct high-level undergraduate research earlier than students at other universities and meet global innovators on campus, such as Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence, and Netflix Co-Founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence.

These efforts result in 99% of graduates being employed or continuing their education within 180 days of earning their degree.

DISC VERY

HPU’s Plan for Undeclared Students

IT STARTS WITH YOU AND A SUCCESS COACH

1. 3.

THEY’VE WALKED IN YOUR SHOES.

You will partner with a Success Coach who is passionate about helping you discover the right major and form positive connections with campus organizations related to your interests. This happens as early as the December ahead of enrollment for early decision students or the March before for regular admitted students.

2. 4.

THERE’S A CLASS FOR THAT!

During “Exploring Your Major and Career Path,” the one-credit course designed to help you explore your options, a Career Advisor will guide you through self-reflection and assessment tools such as PathwayU. You’ll also be able to connect with professionals in fields you’re considering to ask thoughtful questions and learn more.

Sometimes we learn best from someone like us — a peer. First-Year Navigators are HPU students selected by the Office of Student Success to mentor first-year students. As an undeclared student, you will be connected with First-Year Navigators who were once undeclared, too. They know exactly what you are going through and will help you explore your options.

“WHAT’S MY MAJOR?” WEDNESDAY

This event, hosted each semester by the Office of Student Success and the Office of Career and Professional Development, is a great opportunity to work with Success Coaches and Career Advisors to explore major and career options and discover the best fit for you!

8 | Extraordinary Education

NATIONALLY, AN ESTIMATED 50% OF STUDENTS ENTER COLLEGE UNDECIDED ON THEIR MAJOR. In addition, an estimated 75% of students change their major at least once before graduating. HPU’s Project Discovery provides the guidance and resources that students need to discover their passion and achieve their goals.

Check out the eight “Light Bulb” Moments of Project Discovery — your guide to uncovering your academic passion.

5. 7.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH THIS MAJOR?

When you find a major that seems great, you’ll also want to understand what you can do with that degree once you graduate. HPU’s career advisors will help you understand how your major translates to real-world career paths.

FACULTY CONNECTIONS + MEET & GREETS

Throughout each semester, faculty members host opportunities to meet with students who may have questions about a specific major. Casual in nature, these interactions allow you to connect with faculty, learn more about various programs and identify best-fit majors!

You can attend as many of these meetings as you want, and you are always invited to have one-on-one visits with a professor to discuss opportunities within a major.

6. 8.

CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ADVISORS: YOUR PEOPLE

You’ll see them in some of your classes and engage with them in Cottrell Hall. Your Career Advisor will explain the many resources available to you in the Career Center — headquarters of the years of support and guidance that will lead to your portrait appearing on the HPU Young Alumni Career Wall!

PEER CAREER ADVISORS

Visit with the Peer Career Advisors (PCAs) to get additional support. PCAs help you get started crafting a resume that can lead you to hands-on exploration of summer jobs and internships. Convenient walk-in hours in the Career and Professional Development Office ensure you have continuous support to guide you on your journey.

HPU FOCUSES ON THIS CRUCIAL ELEMENT THAT’S OFTEN MISSING AT OTHER COLLEGES.

SKILLS

Life Skills (n):

Capabilities that outlast and extend beyond technical skills and allow one to communicate, build relationships, continuously grow and thrive in competitive environments. Adaptation amid rapid change. Understanding that to work harder, one must work smarter. Accepting failure as the price for learning and developing a growth mindset. Navigating complex situations without being intimidated by life’s obstacles. What employers want in new hires.

12 | Extraordinary Education
life

HPU graduates are coachable and willing to grow, which is why they’ve been phenomenal in our leadership program.

YOUR COLLEGE EDUCATION SHOULDN’T ONLY FOCUS ON the attainment of a diploma. An extraordinary, holistic education also should be about your personal transformation and professional development.

We live in a “figure it out” world. Think about it the technology you grew up with has changed tremendously. And what you know today will be different tomorrow.

You won’t just receive a degree at High Point University. Your HPU experience will include hundreds of hands-on learning opportunities that transform your abilities to solve complex problems, adapt, work well with others and build a fulfilling career.

§ I need to take the Life Skills Quiz to discover more about how Life Skills will benefit my future career or graduate school opportunities.

www.highpoint.edu/life-skills-quiz

These skills what HPU calls Life Skills are exactly what major employers (the kind for which you’ll want to work someday) say they need but aren’t finding in most college graduates.

HPU surveyed more than 500 executives at organizations, and their answer is clear: 65% of those executives said they’d rather colleges instill graduates with Life Skills, such as the ability to communicate, collaborate, solve problems and adapt, as opposed to imparting technical skills, such as specific software, hardware or specialized training on a specific subject.

At HPU, while you become an expert in your field of choice, you’ll also develop Life Skills along your journey.

During my time at HPU, I expanded my Life Skills and developed in so many ways that assisted me as I started my career. HPU enabled me to differentiate myself – primarily due to all the leadership and learning opportunities that were afforded to me. Although academics are the primary focus at HPU, the university emphasized the importance of Life Skills, which are essential in preparing students for the real world.

LIFE

Employers consistently report that new hires don’t work out for reasons such as coachability and adaptability rather than technical competence. This HPU survey of more than 500 executives at organizations with 5,000 to 25,000 employees is one example of these reports. HPU faculty listen to the demands of the marketplace and prepare students to excel in the areas that matter most.

HPU has conducted multiple surveys. To see them all, including a recent 2023 survey, scan this QR code or visit www.highpoint.edu/survey to receive your complimentary copy of HPU’s Life Skills Executive Survey.

How You’ll Put Life Skills to Work

If you’re still curious about HPU’s approach to helping you develop your Life Skills, consider these scenarios:

are essential to thriving in the post-graduate world and leaving behind an impactful legacy.”

The CEO of your dream company sits next to you on a plane. What’s your move?

At HPU, students learn that before they can sell anything, they have to sell themselves. That’s where HPU’s Professional Selling Program, Sales Labs and unique campus facilities like the airplane fuselage come in.

It’s your first time visiting a Fortune 500 company. Are you intimidated by your surroundings?

Not after years of learning in HPU’s environment, which includes facilities modeled after Silicon Valley, financial firms, the New York City Stock Exchange and more.

Everybody has a great idea. You’re given the opportunity to pitch yours. Are you ready?

You will be with the help of HPU’s School of Entrepreneurship, where students have pitched ideas to Netflix Co-Founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence, and Apple CoFounder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence.

You just graduated, and a prospective employer offers you an interview over lunch. What do you do if your university didn’t prepare you?

HPU provides four years of career preparation inside of 1924 PRIME, Alo, and Kazoku, the university’s fine-dining restaurants and learning labs. Inside, students hone interview skills as they experience a wide variety of cultural cuisines and traditions.

I’d love to work at one of these dream companies where other HPU Alumni work:

Why HPU?

AT HPU, YOUR LIFE SKILLS FOUNDATION begins early. Sometimes referred to as “soft skills” in the business world, life skills unlock the ability to communicate with different people, present ideas clearly, work in a team, be coachable, be adaptable, problem-solve and persevere.

The First-Year Seminar on Life Skills with President Qubein and Friends for all freshmen is led by Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU’s president, entrepreneur and consultant to CEOs. The weekly seminar focuses on topics such as fiscal literacy, persuasive speaking, the art of negotiating and how to embrace change. Qubein also discusses the “rule of thirds” — investing one-third of life in earning, one-third in learning and one-third in serving.

If you can gain the level of Life Skills in college that would otherwise take years of experience to amass in the real world, you will stand out.

My most impactful moment at HPU was the First-Year Life Skills Seminar, where President Qubein explained the reality of life after college. His lessons continue to impact my mentality and overall view of life.

How HPU makes every moment a Experience

PREMIER LIFE SKILLS

HPU STUDENTS ARE PREPARED TO LEAD BECAUSE THEY ARE ARMED WITH MANY REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCES.

A quarter of everything taught at HPU has an experiential component because professors want students to stretch themselves, make professional connections, work on campus and in the community, and find out firsthand what real-world ready means.

Students then discover that experience is the best teacher, and with the university’s opportunities for internships, study abroad, research, service learning and much more, they graduate prepared and ready to go.

The opportunities that HPU will provide you to gain real-world experience are too long to list here, but these pages provide a glimpse.

There are many ways to learn about a new culture, but nothing compares to the experience of being fully immersed in it.

During my educational journey, I want to:

§ Study Abroad

§ Land a Stellar Internship

§ Conduct Undergraduate Research

§ Gain Skills Through Service Opportunities

§ Make Industry Connections

§ Launch My Own Business

academic INNOVATION

As an HPU student, you will graduate college alongside two million people diving into a competitive workforce. Your experience in undergraduate research will help you answer an important and common question among employers and graduate schools:

What sets you apart?

Students in all academic disciplines are given opportunities to partner with professors and engage in research, scholarship and creative endeavors as early as freshman year. HPU programs such as Research Rookies and the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SuRI) are part of a multipronged approach that gets HPU students involved early in their academic careers. As a result, they build compelling resumes and stand out to future employers and graduate schools.

HPU’s innovative approach to academics means the constant addition of new schools and programs to equip students with the skills to succeed in the world not as it is, but as it is going to be. Since 2005, HPU has grown from three to 14 academic schools and added new facilities all across campus. HPU’s new nursing program is one example. The inaugural nursing class arrived to campus fall 2023. Nursing students have learned alongside

Students in Dr. Kevin Suh’s biology lab test natural compounds on human cervical and breast cancer cells in the cell culture lab.

students in other successful health care education programs, including doctoral degree programs in physical therapy and pharmacy and master degree programs in physician assistant studies and athletic training. New facilities for the Workman School of Dental Medicine, Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law, David S. Congdon School of Entrepreneurship and School of Optometry are also on the horizon.

Throughout the year, faculty and students conduct, present and publish high-level research in numerous fields. Below are just a few highlights:

Students Join NASA and NIH-Funded Projects

HPU students Thomas Boudreaux and Kyle Corcoran journeyed to the Andes Mountains with Dr. Brad Barlow, associate professor of astrophysics and director of HPU’s Culp Planetarium. Together, they studied stars at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, one of the world’s best-known observing sites for professional astronomers. They observed pulsating white dwarfs dead, remnant stars that show variable brightness due to vibrations. Their research adventure is just one of many hands-on experiences HPU students enjoy. With two NASA grants and a National Science Foundation Grant, the department of physics is conducting more than $430,000 worth of research.

Kyle Corcoran (left) and Thomas Boudreaux (right) traveled with Dr. Brad Barlow, associate professor of astrophysics (center), to the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in the Andes Mountains of Chile.

Exercise Science Students Participate in Summer Research Fellowship (SuRF)

Dr. Lisa Zukowski worked with SuRF students on research that is focused on identifying early biomarkers that indicate a risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, which can be apparent when people perform complex everyday tasks. Their research used gait sensors, eye-tracking glasses and cognitive testing software to evaluate participants as they performed a grocery shopping test, a walking test on different surfaces and other challenging walking tasks.

Niyah Williams, an exercise science student, demonstrates one of the everyday tasks Dr. Lisa Zukowski’s lab is testing to determine early biomarker risks in developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Research for Every Discipline, Including Pre-Law

When Amanda Vo and Emily Davis were studying pre-law at HPU, they partnered with a High Point law firm to build a database surrounding the economics of practicing law. Their research documented the amount of money new law school graduates have to pay in advance to practice law in different areas. ACCESS

innovators to

HPU is the only university that I recommend.

I noticed mentorship matters at HPU. Now that I’ve glanced at the Innovators in Residence, I have one question for myself:

Who am I most excited to meet?

One of the components of HPU’s transformational process is the access to innovators the university intentionally provides to students.

HPU knows that connecting students with people who have changed the world unlocks their ability to believe in themselves and accomplish goals they once didn’t know were possible.

When students meet leaders like Netflix Co-Founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence, or Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence, they receive valuable coaching and insightful feedback that impacts their development as a person.

That was the experience of CeAnna Soper, a 2018 HPU graduate from Hartland, Wisconsin. She pitched her business, Breezy Brush, to Randolph inside HPU’s Entrepreneurship Center. And he gave her real feedback to incorporate into her product. Today, she continues to build her business while leading a successful career at VMware, a global leader in cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology.

“Marc is an active listener who put a lot of thought into his comments,” says Soper. “He asked me things I hadn’t thought about before, such as my marketing cost for each individual customer. He gave me plenty of homework when it came to moving my product forward.”

Meetings throughout the year with global change agents and industry leaders teach HPU students the importance of actively listening and applying advice to their performance a skill that future employers notice and appreciate.

In short, students discover the art of the possible.

Executive Education

While major corporations hire national speakers, consultants and change agents to coach their employees and further their professional development, HPU provides these opportunities to all students throughout the year. Below is a sample of wisdom that in-residence faculty recently shared with students during coaching sessions on campus.

COMMITMENT TO VALUES.

We made a firm commitment to the fact that our values would not just be printed on the wall, but they would be enacted by the people in our halls. It’s just like those famous words from Roy Disney, who said, ‘When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.’

Cynt Marshall, CEO of the Dallas Mavericks and HPU’s Sports Executive In Residence

STICK TO YOUR CONVICTIONS.

Don’t worry about how you will appear to other people. Instead, ask yourself, ‘Am I right in my own terms and my own mind?’ You only need to convince one person when you have discussions or arguments – yourself.

Steve Wozniak, Co-Founder of Apple Computer and HPU’s Innovator In Residence

ALWAYS SHARE YOUR IDEAS.

Not sharing an idea because you’re afraid it will be stolen is the biggest reason people give for not starting. It is highly unlikely that the idea you begin with will look exactly the same by the time you start your business. Entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley realized the key is to tell everyone your idea. Then they can offer you valuable input so you can improve.

High Point University showed me my academic potential and what I could achieve if I challenged myself every day. I learned through classes, professors and friends that I am capable of being so much more than what I gave myself credit for. It gave me self-confidence, which has helped me achieve my day-to-day tasks and my long-term goals.

HPU provided me with the resources that I needed to become a well-rounded young professional, an independent thinker and a valuable contributor. I graduated from HPU with a broad depth of knowledge and background that made me stand out from other graduates.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

HPU is focused on your SU

A lot of what made me attractive to dental schools was what I’d learned at HPU. Understanding how to master communication and knowing the values of teamwork, hard work, time management, empathy, perseverance and selflessness made me an attractive candidate.

HPU prepared me to work on cross functional teams at all times. My communication level is at its top, and that is because of how much HPU taught me. Every class I took broadened my horizons to find my true niche.

High Point University students consistently bring a level of professionalism through not only their technical skills but also an excellent skill set comprised of strong communication skills, ability to work in a team and a passion for innovation.

LINDSAY SCOTT, ’13 LEAD MANAGER, TALENT DEVELOPMENT REYNOLDS AMERICAN

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

High Point University was amazing in helping me achieve my goals. From the very beginning, I had support in the classroom, which really solidified what I wanted to do in life.

The caring professors, helpful advisors and meaningful experiences I had at HPU prepared me for success in medical school. The Natural Sciences Fellows Program emphasized learning through lab work and research, allowing me to apply the lessons I learned in the classroom. My advisors and professors pushed me and encouraged my curiosity — they believed I could accomplish my goals.

HPU prepared me for long-term success in many ways. Most importantly, I learned the importance of public speaking and networking. Because the school provides students with so many networking opportunities, I met HPU’s Journalist in Residence and ABC News’ “Nightline” Co-Anchor Byron Pitts and was taught by HPU’s Broadcaster in Residence Joe Michaels who are both experts in the industry.

GABRIELLE BARONE, ’22 WEEKDAY SHOW FOX 5 (WNYW-TV NEW YORK)

My professors were highly experienced in the industry, unselfishly provided insight that addressed practical challenges and developed meaningful solutions. I’m grateful for HPU’s commitment to developing students in all areas of life.

CAMERON SCOTT, ’17 SENIOR COORDINATOR, BASEBALL DEVELOPMENT MLB

Going into senior year knowing I already had a career lined up had the biggest impact on my life. I would not be in my current position if it wasn’t for HPU.

When I interned with organizations like USA Track and Field, Under Armour and IMG College, I was up against a field of qualified candidates from large universities. What set me apart was the real-world experience I received at HPU and the attitude they instilled within me to never be afraid of a challenge.

CCESS

By far one of my favorite lessons from Dr. Qubein is establishing great communication skills — it has been the foundation to the success I’ve had in my life. Networking comes organically by having great communication skills. This has been revolutionary in my career.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

At HPU, when you have someone such as the Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall with her status in the sports industry come speak with you, you get a clear idea of the skills you need and the things you need to improve on to assess yourself and become a better person in that industry.

My time at HPU was such a growth experience for me. It prepared me to be a leader and gave me confidence in my creative skills. HPU also gave me the drive to contribute ideas in creative collaboration meetings for upcoming Disney+, Animation and 21st Century Studios films.

One of the things I love so much about High Point is the willingness to give back to others. I was involved in Alpha Phi Omega, which is a coed service fraternity. It gave me abundant opportunities to help people in the community. I also learned ways to communicate with different people. HPU’s culture of wanting to help others is just contagious.

By making an effort to meet alumni and recruiters early on my freshman year, by the time I started my first interview I was able to use those people as references and also resources for advice. Relationships can be so helpful and High Point can help you form them."

At a glimpse, HPU alumni work for companies such as:

The Alumni Network at HPU was a huge bonus. I could reach out to multiple pre-PA alum who offered loads of application and interview advice."

THINK ENVIRONMENT DOESN’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Ask any professional sports coach if they prefer to play at home or away. HPU understands that your surroundings shape your behavior. People rise to the level of the environment in which they live. Whether students are in class, a residence hall or one of the library learning common spaces throughout campus, students are continuously surrounded by excellence. HPU’s entire campus is a holistic learning environment that complements classroom learning and prepares students to thrive. Here’s a glimpse:

Ivy League-Level Facilities

The lobby of the Wilson School of Commerce resembles that of a typical Fortune 500 company. So when students land their job interview, they’ll feel at home in that environment. The Tilley Trading Room features a live stock ticker and Bloomberg trading software. Executive boardrooms allow students to present themselves in a corporate setting. The Human Biomechanics and Physiology Lab is one of the most unique labs in the country. With the addition of our Culp Planetarium and Caine Conservatory, students can gain hands-on experience programming and presenting STEM lessons or conducting botanical research. Also, TV studios equipped with state-of-the-art technology prepare graduates for competitive newsrooms. These facilities are among the many reasons U.S. News and World Report ranks HPU the Most Innovative College in the South.

Lessons in Leadership

HPU buzzes with the news of industry leaders visiting campus throughout the year. Something beautiful happens when students meet and learn from these accomplished leaders: THEY DISCOVER THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE. The simple lesson learned: “I can do it.” Students have learned from change agents such as Netflix Co-Founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence; Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence; Dallas Mavericks CEO, Cynthia “Cynt” Marshall, HPU’s Sports Executive In Residence; Condoleezza Rice, 66th U.S. Secretary of State; Josh Groban, internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and actor; Wolf Blitzer, CNN lead political anchor and anchor of “The Situation Room”; Gen. Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and national security advisor; NASA astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin; and many others.

A 500+ Acre “Classroom”

Flags from more than 37 nations fly along the Gene and Jane Kester International Promenade to honor each international student’s home country. Along its brick pathways, quotations selected by faculty provide ideas for reflection. Sculptures of significant historical figures inspire students to pursue their goals. The Mariana H. Qubein Arboretum and Botanical Gardens bring holistic learning to life throughout campus. These elements were intentionally placed on campus to present learning opportunities at every turn. For example, Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Martin Kifer takes students on a guided walk around the Promenade, stopping at each sculpture of civil rights leaders. It prompts students to have an intellectual, out-of-classroom discussion about how these leaders changed the course of history.

1924 PRIME, ALO + NEW TO HPU, KAZOKU:

THREE OF THE NATION’S MOST UNIQUE LEARNING LABS

Engaging Events Foster Connection

The HPU campus thrives on connection. There’s the Activities Fair, during which students get connected with clubs and causes that interest them. There are Greek organizations, which present leadership and service opportunities. There are guest lectures, concerts, theater performances, art exhibits and more to expose the HPU family and the community to the arts. There are 17 Division I athletic events to attend, dozens of intramural teams on which to participate and 35 club sports in which to engage. These opportunities exist to teach students to thrive in collaborative environments, to build relationships and connect the dots wherever they go.

ACCORDING TO A STORY IN THE NEW YORK TIMES TITLED “HOW TO HIRE THE RIGHT PERSON,” employers say that taking a candidate to lunch or dinner is one of the most revealing and important parts of the hiring process.

So imagine you just graduated and a prospective employer offers you an interview over lunch or dinner. What do you do if your university didn’t prepare you?

While some universities provide an etiquette class during a student’s senior year, HPU provides students with four years of career preparation inside three different fine-dining restaurants. 1924 PRIME, HPU’s flagship restaurant; Alo, HPU’s boutique hotel restaurant; and Kazoku, HPU’s newest hibachi restaurant, provide the perfect atmosphere for students to engage in a unique type of learning laboratory. At 1924 PRIME, students practice their interview skills in a setting where they can develop confidence while gaining familiarity with international cuisine and culture. Similarly, at Alo, students practice interviewing, focus on continental dining styles, and learn to be comfortable with European dining etiquette and protocol. At Kazoku, HPU’s Teppanyaki experience, students are able to enjoy live-action cooking with engaging chefs, featuring business etiquette, leadership and Life Skills sessions. Once-a-week dining at either restaurant is included in the HPU dining plan.

When HPU graduates enter the workforce, they not only know how to ace the interview, but they’re also comfortable and confident in various business settings. This prepares them for a lifetime of success. Just picture it: after you accept the job offer, your boss asks you to take an international client to dinner. Or you’re meeting colleagues after work to offer a major proposal.

Whatever the scenario, you’re ready.

LIVE IN AMERICA’S BEST DORMS

Self-Care Like Never Before

Items that will make me feel most ‘at home’ in college:

§ A terrific roommate that shares similar values

§ A private room with my own bathroom

§ Access to good study spaces

§ Close to my favorite food venue(s) or to a Starbucks!

§ A comfortable double bed - not a bunk bed!

§ Large closet spaces

§ Relaxing spaces to hang out with friends

§ Self-care opportunities

Bonus Opportunity: WATCH videos of all the first-year housing options by scanning the QR code.

For a 360 VR view, visit www.highpoint.edu/residencelife.

There are so many great things about living in Blessing Hall. It is great to live in a suite where you live closely with your suitemates but also have the ability to go into your own room, where you are able to do homework and have time to yourself. You have a kitchen as well as your own common room. What more could you ask for?

One of my favorite things about Blessing is it is easy to study and take charge of your academics. You don’t have to go to the library to get your work done since you have your own room. You have a good and quiet learning place.

THE CHAPEL AND RELIGIOUS LIFE OFFICE IS A PLACE OF INCLUSION.

With students representing all 50 states, 37 countries and an array of faiths and backgrounds, HPU is dedicated to fostering the religious life of students from all backgrounds.

The Chapel and Religious Life Office provides year-round programming. Catholic students have Mass where they can worship. Jewish students have a vibrant Hillel. And each year, students of all backgrounds come together for an interfaith Iftar — a meal celebrated by Muslims during Ramadan.

And while diverse programming aids in the goal of touching as many lives as possible, a dedication to community serves as another means of fostering religious life at HPU.

Interfaith Engagement

In keeping with its Christian heritage, High Point University practices radical hospitality to people of all faiths and takes great pride in raising the bar for positive multifaith and interfaith collaboration and service. HPU was recently named the interfaith university Rookie of the Year by the Interfaith Youth Core, one of America’s leading interfaith engagement and service organizations. This recognition comes in response to student-led efforts to promote collaboration, service, understanding and appreciation for difference among religious and spiritual organizations on campus.

CARING people

PROVIDING AN EXTRAORDINARY EDUCATION IS AT THE HEART OF HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY’S MISSION, but the soul of the university lives and breathes within its people. It begins with faculty and staff who take time to teach and engage with students each day. It continues through the student support roles of Student Success Coaches, a full-time campus doctor and the Campus Enhancement staff that not only maintain the grounds and facilities to the highest degree but also take time to stop and greet guests as they pass by.

At HPU, students are supported by individuals who serve as heroes, models and mentors inside and outside the classroom. While students perform research and achieve academic milestones, they also learn to live a life based on values that enable them to become responsible citizens.

By building a culture of caring people, HPU has developed a campus-wide ecosystem of support.

SOMETIMES ALL YOU NEED IS A HUG AND PEP TALK FROM YOUR PRESIDENT!

FACULTY THAT GO ABOVE AND BEYOND

Dr. Bobby Hayes’ willingness to meet with me one-on-one outside of class to discuss classwork and professional development really meant a lot to me. It showed that he truly has an invested interest in not just preparing his students for one semester but rather for an entire sports media career.

STUDENT SUCCESS COACHES PROVIDE TOP-NOTCH SUPPORT

The Career and Professional Development Center as well as the Success Coaches are invaluable. They are always available for meetings and even impromptu walk-ins for help with my resume or career questions. The resources are there, so take the time to use them and they will help you reach your goals.

DINING STAFF = FAMILY

Whether it’s Ms. Mary in the Farmers Market or Ms. Kristy in the Cafe, I know that wherever I go across campus, I have someone in my corner, supporting and looking out for me. This is the most important value to me because when I first visited HPU, I felt like it was home.

CAMPUS CONCIERGE: ONE-STOP SHOP FOR SUCCESS

I am a concierge employee, and I also use them constantly, whether it’s booking a shuttle for airports during fall break, Thanksgiving, or Christmas break, or helping with any question I have as far as campus enhancement and keeping our campus beautiful.

HEROES, MODELS & MENTORS

HPU provides impactful mentors to guide students throughout their college journey and more importantly, throughout their lives. Students don’t merely enroll at HPU, they join the HPU family. It’s the conversation over a cup of coffee, the encouraging email from a Silicon Valley veteran or a congratulatory high-five from a professor on graduation day. Mentorship takes many forms. It happens everywhere on High Point University’s campus. Here are just a few examples:

HPU SECURITY MAKES THE WORLD SMILE

I typically think of a security guard as standoffish and not relational. Ms. Valerie is anything but that! She cares about each and every student and faculty member at HPU. She exemplifies that independent of job position or title, there are always opportunities to make a positive impact in someone’s life.

Apex Systems

a

VALUES -based

EDUCATION

YOU’LL FIRST NOTICE IT WHEN YOU DRIVE ONTO CAMPUS.

A security officer smiling to greet you. A professor stooping down to pick up a stray piece of trash along the Kester International Promenade. The President of HPU waving as you walk to class. A student holding the door for you.

Those gestures happen every day on the campus of High Point University. While seemingly insignificant, they make a big impact.

High Point University is a values-based institution. As HPU President Nido Qubein often reminds faculty and staff, “You can’t teach values. Instead, we must model a valuesbased approach to life. Students watch, they listen and they learn.”

Faculty and staff model the values of service, joy, generosity, gratitude and respect because they know that students are paying attention to the actions of those around them.

When students are surrounded by people who have a positive attitude, they begin to understand that nothing is impossible for the individual who is willing to work hard enough and smart enough.

And when students graduate and pursue professional careers, they go on to lead lives of success and significance.

When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.

MISS VERNELL IS ONE EXAMPLE OF HPU’S CARING PEOPLE.

MOM AND DAD WILL NOT ALWAYS BE THERE IN COLLEGE TO GIVE YOU A HUG WHEN YOU NEED IT, BUT MISS VERNELL WILL.

She’s the rock star of the Slane Student Center. She works to keep the food court, Starbucks, study spaces and student recreation center clean. But her bigger job is to encourage students every day.

She knows students by name, their class schedules, what internships they’re applying for and when they need some words of encouragement.

Vernell is one of many committed staff and faculty members who reflect an intentional campus culture that supports you at every turn.

I get so involved with the students. I cry with them, I pray with them … I can tell when they’re stressed or having good and bad days. They’ll come up to me and say, ‘Oh, Miss Vernell, I’ve been up studying all night for an exam. I don’t think I can do this.’ I tell them, ‘It’s going to be OK. You can do it.’

Why Students Love HPU’s Campus Safety Team

Learning is best achieved in an environment where students and faculty can thrive. That’s why safety is a top priority. It’s also why HPU has an expert team of student life, security and transportation professionals a team dedicated to providing students an inspiring, secure learning environment. The HPU campus is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology to assist with that mission. Here are a few reasons why HPU students love their campus safety team:

Trained Security Officers — HPU’s trained team of officers and dispatchers welcome all guests to campus 24/7. The men and women of the HPU security team collectively bring more than 300 years of police, military and fire/EMS experience to the university.

Shuttles — The Transportation Department provides students with a convenient, safe and secure method of transportation. Campus shuttles take students to their classes and residence halls, while others take students to local retail establishments and regional airports.

HEY MOM AND DAD!

You’ve spent 18 years caring for and keeping watch over your student. When the time comes for them to move into their HPU residence hall, that caring won’t stop. With 24/7 presence of friendly campus police, trained security officers and Student Life staff, you can rest easy knowing your student is safe and secure.

Our objective is to keep the students physically healthy, but we are also interested in their well-being as a whole: mental, academic, life fulfillment and also success in future goals and careers.

Safe Access — A key card is required for access to all academic buildings and dorms. Residence hall card access is given to students who live in the halls.

24/7 Student Life Presence — Student Life staff are on call 24 hours a day to assist with students’ needs.

Cashless Campus — The Passport Card is the only form of payment accepted on campus. It frees students from having to carry cash and also allows family members to easily deposit funds into their student’s campus account.

PantherALERT — Students are automatically enrolled in PantherALERT, HPU’s emergency mass-notification program. Should an emergency situation arise, advisories are sent to the HPU family via text message, email, voice message, campus phones, campus computers, social media, the HPU website and an outdoor PA system.

I appreciate partnering with the HPU students to promote health and well-being on campus.

HPU RECENTLY INSTALLED

CARVED ON THE SIDE OF HPU’S KESTER INTERNATIONAL PROMENADE is this quote from Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

HPU is proud to recognize our great nation and celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States. Here’s a glimpse of the ways HPU celebrates God, family and country.

STARS AND STRIPES EVERYWHERE

Dozens of American flags, along with an array of other national symbols, are displayed all around campus to represent patriotism, reverence, honor and pride. Whenever President Qubein speaks on campus, American flags always accompany him on the speaker’s platform.

58 | Caring People
3,000 POUNDS OF STEEL FROM NYC’S TWIN TOWERS FORGED INTO LETTERING UNDERNEATH THE 30-FOOT-WIDE AMERICAN FLAG DISPLAY IN THE NIDO AND MARIANA QUBEIN ARENA AND CONFERENCE CENTER.

The HPU family proudly shouts it from the mountaintop: High Point University is a God, family and country school. HPU celebrates the fundamentals that make this country great, including personal initiative, free enterprise, patriotism and more.

HONORING VETERANS

HPU respects those who selflessly serve and sacrifice to protect our home and freedom. That’s why HPU hosts renowned veterans to share their stories with students. Each Veterans Day, HPU welcomes more than 2,000 veterans and their families to a complimentary breakfast and patriotic program.

FOSTERING FAITH

Faith is a cornerstone of HPU’s values-based education. The university was founded by the United Methodist Church in 1924 and honors its Methodist heritage. It also welcomes every student regardless of faith or viewpoint. Civility, personal responsibility and individual expression are respected and celebrated.

WATCH: Veterans Day Celebration in Action!

ENCOURAGING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

At HPU, students learn what it takes to build a thriving democracy. Through the HPU Poll, students survey residents of North Carolina and beyond on crucial public affairs issues and report the results. Debate viewing parties on campus give students a chance to watch political history unfold before their eyes. Many students choose to intern and volunteer with local, state and national political parties for “get out the vote” efforts, while others help host voter registration drives and provide transportation to polling sites.

HPU is a God, family and country school, and my family holds those values dear. We believe in the objectives and the vision of the university. I’m incredibly proud of my family’s relationship with HPU, where both my children were educated.

LEARN FROM CURRENT HPU FRESHMAN PARENTS ABOUT WHY THEIR

STUDENTS APPLIED EARLY DECISION:

Early Decision was the way to go for us as our daughter fell in love with the university and really wanted to go there. It made senior year for her easier as well. It removed the stress of the college search process.

Early Decision eliminated the stress of the college selection process. We enjoyed becoming part of the HPU community much sooner. Our son had the opportunity to learn more about his new home before moving in. He had time to explore programs, to meet other classmates through the HPU social media groups and was prepared and enthusiastic about his decision upon arrival in August.

11

12 13

IGNITE YOUR PATH TO SUCCESS. Students and parents love the fact that 99% of HPU graduates are employed or enrolled in graduate school within 180 days of graduation from HPU –14 points higher than the national average! While you’ll have access to HPU’s impressive Office of Career and Professional Development throughout all four years, Early Decision applicants receive complimentary access to an exclusive Life Skills and Leadership Luncheon held inside 1924 PRIME with career office leaders.

RECEIVE YOUR SWAG PACKAGE EARLY!

Early Decision families will receive a special HPU swag package before all other admitted students that includes your HPU t-shirt, stickers and more. It provides extraordinary ways to begin celebrating your future at High Point University.

PREFERRED DATE SELECTION AND GUARANTEED ACCESS TO HPU EVENTS. HPU is in high demand and can only accommodate so many visitors! Early Decision families can choose their preferred date for events like Orientation, Scholarship Weekends and Admitted Student Weekends. As a bonus to this benefit, your family will also receive early access to HPU Family Weekend. HPU Family Weekends are highly beloved and traditionally exclusive to current, enrolled families only. By applying Early Decision, you could even attend our Spring Family Weekend to get to know the HPU family early and enjoy the much-anticipated Family Weekend Concert!

14 15

INCREASE YOUR CHANCE OF ACCEPTANCE TO HPU. When you apply Early Decision, you increase your chances of being admitted and receive priority consideration. The first students to apply are selected from a smaller pool of applicants and are the first to receive their HPU decision.

PRIORITY SCHOLARSHIP CONSIDERATION. Are scholarships important to your college decision? Because Early Decision students are the first to be admitted, they’re also the first to be considered for HPU scholarships and the first to know which scholarship opportunities they qualify for.

Our daughter was planning to apply to four schools, but she told us if HPU accepted her, hands down she would go there. That’s when we decided for her to apply Early Decision so she would know the outcome prior to other application deadlines. She received her acceptance notice the day after Thanksgiving. We were all so excited for her. We saw the relief on her face. The decision was made; she would be able to attend her first choice and not have to stress anymore.

Liz R., Branchburg, New Jersey

What a pleasure to know in late November where my son was headed. The early access to his Success Coach, the March orientation, first priority to his housing and priority class selection were well timed and helpful. Moving in a day early was HUGE! The reduced anxiety, the ease of move in and the added time to settle in was so terrific. HPU goes above and beyond for their Early Decision candidates. No other school my son looked at had such a thoughtful program. It was exciting for my son to be an early part of HPU’s incoming class.

We had better holidays knowing our son would attend HPU. I’m glad he made his decision and avoided the stress of worrying about where he would go to college. It provided a lot of calmness and relief. We appreciate the pristine campus, the dynamic program he’s in, the small class sizes and the constant expansion. We know HPU is a place that’s always growing.
