Philanthropic partnerships with our alumni, families and friends have been a cornerstone of High Point University's success for the last 98 years. Each fall, leadership supporters are recognized in the President's Circle Honor Roll of Donors for their generosity in the preceding fiscal year.

Recognizing those who have given $1,924 or more in annual gifts during the last fiscal year.

High Point University also celebrates those who have chosen to invest in the institution through the Sterling Society with a planned gift, and the dedicated alumni who have given for three or more consecutive years through the League of Loyal Alumni. Some of these extraordinary alumni have exceeded more than 30 years as committed supporters of their alma mater.

Through the generosity of more than 2,000 #DayforHPU donors, $1.9M was raised to support student scholarships, academic programs and capital projects at High Point University.

I have also been able to apply and be accepted to intern at my dream job, NCIS. I am so thankful for the generosity that will allow me to achieve my dreams.”

ENDOWMENT SUPPORT BENEFITS SENIOR SCHOLARS

When reflecting on the most impactful skills and knowledge he has carried into the workforce, recent High Point University graduate, Dakota Tameling of Wheaton, Illinois, spoke of how strong interpersonal and leadership skills play an important role in his career. “I have found that it is not the most impressive ivy-league peers, star accountants and Excel wizards who have the most impact in the workplace,” said Tameling. He went on to describe how cultivating a well-balanced mind and remaining kind and thoughtful are more powerful tools than one may realize. He also talked about how future graduates may equip themselves to succeed with strong interpersonal communication skills like the ability to lead, listen and ask good questions.

Tameling is a member of HPU's Class of 2022 and is employed with J.P. Morgan Chase as a credit markets analyst at their Chicago Commercial Bank. At J.P. Morgan he is responsible for assisting private firms with banking, treasury and credit services while simultaneously connecting customers with resources provided by the company.

As a senior, majoring in finance and minoring in instrumental studies, Tameling was chosen as the recipient of the Ollie Bieniemy, Jr. Endowed Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic school year. The Dean of the Earl N. Phillips School of Business handpicks an extraordinary student every year to receive this scholarship

“It was a privilege to be selected as the recipient of this scholarship,” said Tameling. “My studies and leadership experience in the Phillips School of Business were so formative, enriching and rewarding over my four years at HPU. I am honored to be recognized by the faculty of the business school, all of whom I deeply respect and admire. My thanks go out to the friends and colleagues of Mr. Bieniemy who continue to provide such a tremendous opportunity for hard-working students here at HPU.”

Tameling's extensive involvement in and out of the classroom showcased his talent and hard work to not only his peers but professors and university leaders alike.

“Dakota Tameling met all of the hallmarks of an impactful professional that we seek to develop in our students,” said Dr. Daniel Hall, Dean of HPU's Earl N. Phillips School of Business. “His leadership and participation in every one of his classes was easily noticed. His role as the President of the Phillips School of Business Investment Club showed that his peers recognized his initiative and character and looked to him to raise the bar of the finance program.”

In addition to his role with the investment club, Tameling was involved in the Business Fellows Senior Cohort, the Phillips School of Business Advisory Board, the Bed Brigade nonprofit and several Phillips School of Business honor societies. He was also heavily involved with the Chapel Ministry at HPU and had the opportunity to preach a sermon in the Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel in March 2022. In his free time, Tameling is passionate about music and plays the French horn in several community music ensembles. During the Winter Family Weekend concert, he had the exciting privilege of introducing Rain, a nationally acclaimed Beatles cover band, in front of thousands of parents, families and students at the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena.

Every High Point University alumnus and alumna has their own unique journey to HPU. Aleah Hayes, a Class of 2022 graduate, was no different when finding her path.

When Hayes first began looking at colleges, she searched for a place where she could establish herself as her own person and feel valued by peers, faculty and staff. She eventually attended an open house at HPU and instantly felt the sense of community and belonging she was looking for. Before leaving campus that day, Hayes committed to HPU.

In August 2018, Hayes started her freshman year at HPU. As she progressed in her studies, Hayes' confidence grew, and she began to join different clubs and organizations across campus. By her senior year, Hayes had joined the Black Cultural Awareness Club, the National Honor Society of First Year Success, the National Society of Leadership and Success, the Student Volunteer Center and was serving as a diversity mentor. She also worked as a supplementary instructor for Social Ethics during the Spring 2021 semester and established herself as an independent researcher during a project focused on how gender affects the messaging of politicians across social media platforms.

Hayes's talents were eventually recognized by her fellow club members, and she was placed in several organizations' leadership positions. This included serving as the vice president and president of the Black Cultural Awareness Club and president of the Student Volunteer Center.

As the Student Volunteer Center president, Hayes organized several extraordinary projects and volunteer campaigns. This included a virtual HPU staff appreciation month, a virtual breast cancer awareness walk, an American Heart Association fundraiser and a toy drive for the local Boys and Girls Club. Through these projects, she helped expand the volunteer center to become a key organization in developing campuswide service activities.

“Aleah's commitment to deepening the pathways for students to serve is unparalleled,” said Rev. Dr. Joseph Blosser, executive director of HPU's Center for Community Engagement. “What makes her so exceptional is her passion for direct service, both on the ground and hand-in-hand with others. At the same time she possesses the strategic skill necessary for building systems and organizations that create the capacity for the whole campus to engage in our community in more just and impactful ways.”

In April 2022, Aleah Hayes was announced as the recipient of the second annual Elizabeth Miller Strickland Trailblazer Award. This award was established by Elizabeth Miller Strickland to recognize an extraordinary, graduating female student and is given to assist the student in her transition from undergraduate studies to her next steps as an HPU alumna.

“Being named the recipient of the second annual Strickland Trailblazer Award has given me the confidence that women will continue to be recognized for their hard work and dedication to bettering HPU,” said Hayes. “The financial aspect of this award is an investment in furthering my development in the field of psychology as a woman of color and a way for me to invest in the local community's women advocacy organizations. Mrs. Strickland's generosity and legacy will inspire me to be a trailblazer for life.”

Hayes graduated from HPU in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy. After graduation, she made the cross-country move to California and is now studying to earn her master's in education and her education specialist degree (Ed.S.). With her education, Hayes plans to continue her journey of supporting the community by becoming a school psychologist and inspiring the growth and confidence of children, especially in underrepresented minorities.

HPU ENDOWMENT

High Point University's endowment exists to generate strong long-term returns that support the University's mission of delivering educational experiences that enlighten, challenge and prepare students to lead lives of significance in complex global communities. The endowment has historically supported the University's efforts to increase scholarship assistance to extraordinary students, support faculty research and add new academic programs and initiatives. In the current year, focus has also shifted to include funds designated to provide for the ongoing costs associated with maintaing current facilities of the University's missional priorities through unrestricted endowment gifts. As of May 31, 2022, the University's endowment is comprised of 418 funds valued at $131.1 million.

FAMILIES INVEST IN STUDENT SUCCESS

High Point University parents Shannon and Michael McFerren established the McFerren Family Endowment to support the Access to Innovators program, which allows students the opportunity to connect with industry leaders for networking, mentorship, career and professional development.

Shannon and Michael have twin daughters, Macy and Madison, who are both HPU students. Macy is a senior studio art major student with a minor in entrepreneurship. Focusing on ceramics, Macy hopes to open a pottery studio after she graduates. One of her favorite aspects of HPU’s curriculum is the emphasis put on experiential, hands-on learning. Madison is a senior marketing major with a minor in fashion merchandising. For Madison, attending HPU was a childhood goal. At just 8 years old, she heard about a speech Dr. Qubein gave at a Chick-fil-A conference their parents attended. From then on, HPU was her dream university. Now as a student, she takes full advantage of the various programs and activities offered to build her resume of skills and abilities.

“At HPU, there is excellence in everything you see,” says Michael McFerren. “The university’s commitment to experiential learning and reputation as the Premier Life Skills University exudes this excellence. As an HPU family, we see this through the implementation and continuation of the Access to Innovators program. With the support of endowed funds, like ours, we hope to see the program grow and blossom over the years as more students benefit from such an extraordinary initiative.”

Michael is the owner and operator of 3 Strands, LLC, the restaurant operating corporation he founded to oversee the operation of his three Chick-fil-A franchises. In 1987, Michael graduated from Allegheny College with a Bachelor of Science in physics. After college, he joined the United States Navy and graduated from the Naval Post Graduate School in 1995 with a master’s in operations analysis. Michael was a pilot for 12 years, and in 2000, joined the Military Recruiting Institute as a recruiter. In 2004, he and his family became owners of their first Chick-fil-A franchise. The McFerrens own restaurants in Abingdon, Maryland, and Aberdeen, Maryland, and have a location on the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. Shannon graduated from the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies in 1991 with an Associate of Science in photography. In 2001, she pursued her life’s passion by opening her own photography company, Shannon McFerren Photography. In addition to running her business, Shannon works as the accounts payable manager for 3 Strands, LLC.

High Point University parents Caren and Jordan Waxman of Boca Raton, Florida established the Waxman Difference Makers Endowed Scholarship in 2022. The Waxmans have three children, Jonah, Lily and Jacob. Jonah is a junior at HPU and a music major with a concentration in instrumental studies. When looking at colleges, Jonah searched for a school that could offer the resources and support that he needed. He ultimately chose HPU due to the commitment of the university to ensuring students have the necessary tools and structure to succeed.

“Supporting higher education is extremely important to our family,” says Jordan Waxman. “We’ve been so excited to see our son thrive at High Point University with the support of extraordinary faculty and staff. By endowing this scholarship, we want to provide other students with the same support they need to succeed at HPU. We hope that this can be the difference maker in a student’s life, and they may one day become a difference maker themselves.”

Jordan is the founder and managing partner at Nucleus Advisors, a private wealth planning and management company. In 1987, Jordan graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Since then, he has completed 12 years of higher education, with his most recent degree completed in 2021. He received a Master of Law in entertainment, arts and sports law the from the University of Miami School of Law. Prior to the conception of Nucleus Advisors, Jordan worked on Wall Street for 20 years as the vice president of Goldman Sachs and later as the senior vice president of investments at Merrill Lynch Private Banking and Investment Group.

Caren graduated from the University of Denver in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in hotel, motel and restaurant management. In 2017, she started her own interior design and home staging company, CW Designs, LLC. CW Designs, LLC specializes in full-scale renovation, staging and interior design processes. Jacob, the oldest of the Waxman children, graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and currently works in product management. Lily, the middle Waxman child, is a rising senior at the University of Miami.

Sterling Society

The Sterling Society recognizes those who have notified HPU by May 31, 2022, that the University has been included in their estate plans. The generosity of planned giving donors strengthens opportunities for HPU's students, faculty and programs.

REFLECTIONSONGIVING

"I give to High Point University because it first gave to me as High Point College. In 1957, High Point College offered admission to a shy, awkward, backward and untested graduate of Spring Creek High School who numbered 12 in the senior class and 70 in the entire school. At HPC, I was nurtured and challenged sufficiently to become president of the student body my senior year, and to be admitted to Yale University for a master’s degree.

I give to High Point University because it continued to give to me after I received a Ph.D. from Drew University. In 1973, I was hired as the Assistant Professor of Religion and Philosophy and remained an employee for 33 years, retiring as a full professor and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

I give to High Point University because it has been a consistent university with a heart. It encouraged me to give to United Way, to participate in local churches and to engage in volunteerism in the wider community. High Point University enabled me to assist in the establishment of Hospice of the Piedmont where I served as the initial president of the Board of Directors. Today, I remain a direct patient volunteer for the Hospice Home of High Point.

In short, I give to High Point University because I have accrued a deep indebtedness to my alma mater over a long span of time."
