MAPPING AND DRAWING NATIONAL BORDERS

LECTURE

Tuesday, October 16 | 12:30-2 PM Presented by Tamara Biegas, Assistant Professor of Geography at HCC The conclusion of World War I saw the redrawing of many national borders: the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the packing together of the Balkans into Yugoslavia, and the re-emergence of Poland, to name a few. How well did the borders that were drawn represent divisions among people based on language or religion? Are heritage and identity based on more than that? HAYS-HEIGHE HOUSE No admission fee, but seating is limited. Call 443-412-2539 to reserve a seat, or email haysheighe@harford.edu.

WORLD WAR I AND MODERNISM: ART

LECTURE

Wednesday, October 24 | 2-3:30 PM Presented by Jeff Ball, Associate Professor of Art History at HCC The traumas and dislocations of World War I left their mark on the physical landscape, on traditional institutions, and on individual psyches. Looking particularly at modernism, art historian Jeff Ball will talk about the ways that reactions to the war interacted with existing movements in art and fueled the rise of new styles of expression. HAYS-HEIGHE HOUSE No admission fee, but seating is limited. Call 443-412-2539 to reserve a seat, or email haysheighe@harford.edu.

NOVEMBER

Spectators are also welcome. President Jefferson cautioned Americans against entangling alliances. Could international bodies such as the League of Nations be a cure for the woes that caused World War I, or would they make matters worse? HAYS-HEIGHE HOUSE No admission fee, but seating is limited. Call 443-412-2539 to reserve a seat, or email haysheighe@harford.edu.

SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR

HCC ACTORS GUILD

November 2, 3, 9 & 10 | 8 PM November 4 & 11 | 3 PM Play by Luigi Pirandello, Adapted by Robert Brustein. Presented by Special Arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Pirandello’s masterpiece, a study in illusion and reality, follows a group of characters who try to fashion their life stories into acceptable drama after first disrupting a rehearsal of another Pirandello play, Mixing It Up. When the theatre’s manager replies that he has no time for madness, he is admonished that he must know life is full of absurdities that do not need to appear plausible since they are true. To reverse this process is the madness of acting, and the essence of this seminal work of early formalist absurdity; that is, “to create credible situations, in order that they may appear true.” CHESAPEAKE THEATER Reserved Seating: Adult $12, Senior (Age 60+) $8, HCC Student/Faculty/Staff $8

REPLAYING THE PARIS PEACE CONFERENCE

DISCUSSION

Thursday, November 15 | 6:30-8 PM Moderated by Stephanie Hallock, Professor of Political Science and Coordinator for Global Education and Engagement at HCC The key players at the Paris Peace Conference had a lot of work to do: treaties would need to be written involving several dozen countries and nationalities, “aggressor” countries would have their colonies re-assigned, and a League of Nations would have to be created. The Treaty of Versailles is often considered at best a failure, and at worst, a direct cause of World War II. Join us as we try to do better! DECEMBER

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES

Thursday, December 6 | 12:30-2 PM Presented by Michael Neiberg, Professor of History and Chair of War Studies at U.S. Army War College With the armistice signed in November 1918, the fighting was over, but negotiations over the treaties to resolve World War I would drag on for many months. The resulting compromises satisfied no one. Although Europe was strung back together, it was a peace too flimsy to hold in the face of competing resentments and pressures. What would this mean for the role of the United States on the world stage? HAYS-HEIGHE HOUSE No admission fee, but seating is limited. Call 443-412-2539 to reserve a seat, or email haysheighe@harford.edu.
