Registration Restrictions

1. Enrollment in continuing education courses is limited to individuals 16 and older, except for courses that specify they are open to those under 16. 2. Non-citizens must provide original documentation (most current resident card, work card, or visa) to register. Students must register in person at the Continuing Education Registration Office in Edgewood Hall. Please note: Non-citizens who have never taken a credit or noncredit class at HCC must go to the Credit Registration Office in the Student Center the first time they register. 3. Current Mailing Address

Students are responsible for maintaining a current mailing address with the College. All address changes should be reported to the Continuing Education and Training Office. If a student owes a debt to the College and does not maintain a current mailing address, that debt will be sent to a collection agency without further notice to the student. In this event, the student will owe an additional collection fee.

Beginning June 2015, Continuing Education and Training Registration is moving to Darlington Hall while Edgewood Hall is under renovation.

Payment

Payment for all continuing education courses is due at the time of registration. Failure to pay will incur a debt to the College that must be paid whether or not you attend the class. To avoid receiving a bill, please call 443-412-2376 before the class begins in order to process a drop.

Residency Surcharge

Out-of-county residents (except senior adults, disabled retired students, and students receiving a Maryland National Guard member tuition waiver) pay a $5 surcharge per course for each continuing education course that charges tuition. If you were an out-of-county resident at the time of your last registration and have since moved in-county, you must complete a Student Statement of Domicile for Tuition Purposes form and provide two forms of identification in order to have the $5 surcharge waived when registering. You may obtain the form by calling 443-412-2376 or visiting the registration desk in Edgewood Hall. Appropriate forms of identification include a driver’s license, voter registration card, or utility bill showing name and Harford County address. All out-of-state residents pay a $10 surcharge per course for all continuing education courses that charge tuition. Course fees, where applicable, are the same for all students.

Harford Student ID

All students will be assigned a Harford student identification number. The H-ID begins with a capital H followed by eight randomly assigned digits. HCC will still need a Social Security number for certain mandated business functions; however, it will be used on a limited basis and kept in a secure environment. Because students will need to use the H-ID for College business transactions, students are required to know and remember their H-ID.

Thomas Paine

Alexander Hamilton

Dolley Madison

Pamphleteer, inventor, diplomat, controversial hero of two revolutions, Thomas Paine has been called “Benjamin Franklin on steroids.” He played a role in the French Revolution, nearly losing his head in the process, and he returned to America at Jefferson’s invitation where his later writings alienated most of his earlier supporters. When he died in 1809, only six people attended his funeral. Tuition: $22

With Hamilton, we have a classic rags-toriches story, a man who truly made it on his own and became trusted by Washington, hated by Jefferson and John Adams, and killed in a duel with Aaron Burr. He is most remembered because of the manner of his death and for an infamous affair which he completely admitted in print! There is much more to the life of this complex man who created our modern capitalist financial system. Tuition: $22

Dolley Madison, wife of our 4th President, created and defined the role of First Lady of the United States. Beautiful and lively, she had her choice of husbands, but chose “my great, little Madison.” She was a gracious and charming hostess, but also a politically shrewd operator who used her skills to advance her husband’s career. During her years ruling over Washington’s social life, she was known as the “Presidentess”. People sought her out for presidential pardons and patronage, and she delivered - or rather her husband did. Tuition: $22

John Adams

Atlas of Independence Benjamin Franklin described John Adams as “always an honest man, often a wise one, but sometimes and in some things, absolutely out of his senses.” He was a great statesman, political philosopher, a leader in America’s independence movement, and he worked mightily abroad in securing foreign loans, a French alliance, and a peace treaty with Great Britain. Adams was also a wonderful husband to Abigail, who could be just as insecure and thin-skinned as her husband. Tuition: $22 Course 26061 FRI 10 AM–12PM

Aaron Burr Aaron Burr’s treachery makes Benedict Arnold’s look tame by comparison. A schemer and plotter all of his life, this New England blue blood not only killed Alexander Hamilton in America’s most famous duel, but also plotted the greatest act of treason in the history of the United States. Had he succeeded in his plans, our country, whatever country it might be, would be very different today. Tuition: $22 Course 26063 FRI 10 AM–12PM

John Marshall John Marshall, an ardent Federalist along with George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, took an embarrassingly weak Supreme Court and made it equal to the other two branches of government. He did for the justice system what Hamilton did for the financial system. He served in all three branches of government as a congressman and as John Adams’ Secretary of State. His is a truly amazing story, that of a giant among giants. Tuition: $22 Course 26065 FRI 10 AM–12PM

Enrichment Pass the Rum Look at historical attempts to regulate the consumption of alcohol over the centuries. While most people are aware of prohibition in the 1920s (the Noble Experiment), attempts to regulate the behavior extends even farther back into the past. Hear colorful stories of rum runners, moonshiners, bathtub gin, intriguing personalities, complicated politics, organized crime, outgunned lawmen, and the temperance movement.

These courses are state-funded and contain the icon u in the course description. If the course description contains this icon, disabled retirees do not pay tuition for the course. Course fees, however, must be paid in full. Please note that there is no out-of-county surcharge for disabled retired students. To receive the disabled retiree tuition waiver the student must provide certification from the Social Security Administration, the Railroad Retirement Board, or the appropriate federal pension/retirement authority stating that the student receives both disability and retirement benefits [Annotated Code of Maryland section 16-106-c]. A form for signature by a representative of the Social Security Administration is available at the Continuing Education & Training Office in Edgewood Hall. The waiver is valid for one school year, or the remainder of the school year, beginning each summer.

Current documentation of the disability must be provided prior to arrangement of accommodations for prerequisite or exemption testing and for College courses. A minimum notice of 10 days may be needed to provide some accommodations. Additional services include academic advising and career services. Training on and use of adaptive computer software and hardware is also available. Call 443-412-2402 or TTY 443-412-2199 for information or to make an appointment. officer certifying that the member of the Maryland National Guard has at least 24 months remaining to serve or has agreed, in writing, to serve for a minimum of 24 months. The College’s out-of-county and out-of-state residency surcharge is waived for courses meeting eligibility for a Maryland National Guard waiver, but the student is responsible for all other course fees.

Maryland National Guard Dependents Dependent spouses and children of a member of the Maryland National Guard and Maryland Air Guard may request a tuition and fee waiver when a Guard member is called to active duty for a minimum period of six continuous months of service. Eligibility for the waiver for a given semester will be determined by the military status of the Guard member as of the date of the start of a regular fall or spring semester or the start of the first summer session. Eligible students must provide a copy of the spouse’s/parent’s military orders to active duty, along with the dependent military identification card.
