Banking FTBOA Riches S

everal Florida owners and breeders are to be congratulated for taking advantage of money offered by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association this spring and summer at Gulfstream Park and the money went to horses who competed at levels from maiden claiming to stakes. Florida-breds Well Defined, Shifty She, Warrior’s Pride and Starship Bonita earned a total of $125,000 in bonus money for Florida-bred and Florida Sire Stakes runners added to selected stakes purses at Gulfstream this past season. Well Defined, who is owned and trained by Kathleen O’Connell, topped the list with $50,000 in bonus money while winning the $75,000 Big Drama on May 1 and the $75,000 Benny the Bull on Aug. 14. Both stakes were restricted to Florida-breds but each also offered a $25,000 win bonus because Well Defined is eligible for the Florida Sire Stakes. In addition to his $50,000 in bonus money, Well Defined also racked up $19,580 in Floridabred breeder awards from the two stakes victories, plus a third in the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Wildcat Heir and a win and a third in two starts against starter allowance company. Well Defined is by With Distinction out of Fru Fru, by Medaglia d’ Oro and was bred by Stonehedge LLC. Shifty She and Starship Bonita each also earned $25,000 Florida Sire Stakes win bonuses against Florida-bred rivals for taking the $75,000 Ginger Punch on June 12 and the $75,000 Sheer Drama on Sept. 11 respectively. Shifty She, who also won the Powder Break on May 15, is owned by Pedigree Partners LLC and trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. The 5-year-old daughter of Gone Astray out of Perilous Hope, by Strong Hope was bred in Florida by Chris Pallas and George Klein and also ranked eighth in Florida breeder awards for the meet with an additional $15,000. 6

Starship Bonita is trained by and co-owned by Steven Dwoskin with Starship Stables and was bred by Mr. and Mrs. William A.T. Rainbow. Warrior’s Pride, a homebred for Just For Fun Stables Inc., won the $75,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint against open company and also banked a $25,000 win bonus as a Florida-bred. The 3-year-old son of Poseidon’s Warrior out of Sophia’s Pride, by Pleasant Tap is trained by Antonio Cioffi. Another big winner of FTBOA money during the Spring-Summer Meet at Gulfstream was Arindel homebred Octane, winner of the $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed on Aug. 28 and the $400,000 FTBOA In Reality on Sept. 25. The Carlos David trainee also won a $60,000 maiden special weight in July after finishing second at the same level in his first career start in June. By Arindel’s stallion Brethren out of Star Recruit, by Aldebaran, Octane took home $7,800 in Florida-bred awards from the two maiden races then $10,500 in Florida-bred awards for each victory in the Florida Sire Stakes for a total of $28,800 for the summer. Second on the list of leading Florida-bred Incentive Fund money earners was Stonehedge LLC homebred Cajun’s Magic with $23,800. The son of Stonehedge Farm South stallion Cajun Breeze out of Mollie’s Magic, by Factum was second in his first start in a $70,000 maiden special weight in May before winning a $60,000 maiden special weight on July 3—earning $7,800 in Florida-bred awards in those two starts. He then won the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager for trainer Michael Yates on July 31 while banking a $10,000 Florida-bred award before finishing second to Octane in both the Affirmed and In Reality while adding $3,000 in Florida-bred awards in both. In Memoriam Florida Thoroughbred Community Mourns Loss of Icon Gilbert G. Campbell Bay Derby (G2)-winner Watch Me Go; and Pimlico Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G3)-winner Friel’s for Real. Among 17 Stonehedge winners of the ‘tradition-rich’ Florida Sire Series are Scandalous Act, who swept the filly division of the series in 2013; and most recently Cajun’s Magic, who along with stablemate Dean Delivers brought home the exacta in the July 31 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager at Gulfstream Park. Both are sons of Cajun Breeze, who stands at Campbell’s Stonehedge Farm South. During the farm’s storied history, they also stood Sword Dance (Ire), Untuttable, Act of Duty, West Acre, Factum and Cajun Breeze. Campbell was also invested in leading Florida sires With Distinction and Khozan. “The sad news of the passing of Gil Campbell was truly heart-breaking as he was such a larger than life human being in every way,” FTBOA CEO Lonny Powell said. “He was a huge player on the Florida and national thoroughbred racing and breeding scene. He will be missed greatly. Our hearts and thoughts go out to his loving wife and partner Marilyn and to the Campbell family during this time of loss and grieving. “I was blessed to have been befriended by Gil and Marilyn upon my arrival in Florida years ago. Gil had so much life and passion for our thoroughbred industry and was not afraid to let his thoughts and opinions be known in his typical classy and humble way. He was a captain of industry and business and a throw-back to the purest of sportsmen who often was passionately optimistic that he, Marilyn, Kathleen, Larry, the Fernungs and rest of the team could find the way to breed, buy and race the fastest horses. He was competitive in such an inspiring way in the greatest of horse owner tradition.” “Gil Campbell was a stellar individual in countless ways. He embraced the Florida thoroughbred industry by purchasing one of its landmark farms and in so doing it continued on as a legacy farm achieving further greatness under his direction,” FTBOA president Phil Matthews D.V.M., said. “Gil kept many things in place that were there with the previous owner, the managerial staff, veterinarians, ferriers, etc. He was an intelligent businessman and recognized a recipe for success. But more than that, he didn’t want to disrupt people’s lives, as I say he embraced our community. He will be sorely missed.” It goes without saying, Gilbert G. Campbell will go down in racing’s history books as one of Florida’s legendary horseman. Donations can be made in the name of Gilbert G. Campbell to Florida Thoroughbred Charities, 801 SW 60th Ave., Ocala, Fla., 34474. (352) 629-2160. Email: tgantt@ftboa.com ■

ilbert G. Campbell, co-owner with wife Marilyn, of Stonehedge Farm South near Williston, Fla., died Sept. 16 at Lowell General Hospital in Lowell, Mass., following a brief illness. Campbell was 91. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, his son Gary Campbell and daughter Susan Campbell. “Despite his remarkable success in business, he was incredibly humble,” Gary Campbell said to the Lowell Sun. “He was such a down-toearth person who would treat the janitor with the same respect he would treat the CEO.” Campbell, a successful businessman in several industries is most remembered for his stellar accomplishments and decades of dedication to the Florida thoroughbred industry. Campbell was a highly successful real estate developer for both residential and commercial properties in Massachusetts and co-owner of the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League. He was a founding member and past president of the Lowell Home Builders Association, a past president of the Massachusetts Home Builders Association and past vice president and lifetime director of the National Home Builders Association. Campbell was also a past board member and chairman of the board of the former St. John’s Hospital/Saints Medical Center, past chairman of the former Northern Middlesex Chamber of Commerce and past president of Vesper Country Club. A former president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association and the Florida breeder of the year in 1997, 2013 and 2016, Campbell was a multiple graded stakes-winning owner with horses racing under his name from 2000-’17, then under Stonehedge LLC from 2017 to present. Under his famous green and white silks, his horses earned nearly $20 million. In 2013, the top horseman ranked 75th by earnings in North America and was among the top 100 by wins in 2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013. (since 2000 according to Equibase). Longtime Stonehedge Farm South manager, Larry King, commented “He loved his horses and we inspected them all every time [Gilbert and Marilyn Campbell] came down, and he would say ‘I can’t wait to see these run.’ Marilyn is very involved and loves the horses… and his wishes, which he had told me many times, was for [Stonehedge Farm South] to keep right on going forward.” Just a few of Campbell’s top homebreds include millionaire Grade 1winner of the Arlington Million Marlin, millionaire, multiple graded winner and Grade 1-placed Blazing Sword, who counted among his victories the Washington Park Handicap (G2); graded stakes-winner Ivanavinalot, who won the Bonnie Miss (G2) and was the dam of two-time filly champion Songbird; Swale Stakes (G2)-winner This One’s for Phil; Tampa

And it was a solid second-place, just a nose short of winner Indy Lyon in the $110,00 Equistaff Sophomore Turf over a mile-and-one-sixteenth on March 28, Florida Cup Day at Tampa Bay Downs. Unsuccessful but competitive in three starts against allowance and optional claimers since, Officiating made a triumphant return to added-money competition against seven other 3-year-old rivals in the Bear’s Den, which was moved from about seven-and-ahalf furlongs on the turf to a sloppy and sealed seven furlongs. Officiating broke well from post three in the Bear’s Den and was directed by jockey Emisael Jaramillo to race close to early leaders Dark Timber and Exchange Day, who were both longshots at 29-1 and 19-1 respectively. Tap It to Win Takes to Tapeta to Win Seagram Stakes Solid morning works on Woodbine’s Tapeta was a hint that Live Oak Plantation’s Tap It to Win may take to the synthetic surface on race day and the Florida-bred’s recent morning training proved to be prophetic on Sept. 11 at Woodbine. In his first start on a synthetic surface, Tap It to Win won the US$122,087 Seagram Stakes (Grade 3) while leading from start to finish, which was also a relatively new tactic for the 4-year-old ridgling. Tap It to Win came into the Seagram off of three nice moves in the morning on the Tapeta main track at Woodbine including a bullet four furlong breeze in :47.40 on Sept. 3, that was the best of 19 that morning. Florida-bred Tap It to Win The Seagram presented a field of five 3-year-olds and older who went a mile-and-one-sixteenth with Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes-winning front-runner Mighty Heart going off as the 3-5 post time favorite in post four. But jockey Rafael Hernandez and Tap It to Win did not allow the odds-on choice to get early position in the Seagram as they sprinted to the front from post five to take a length-and-a-half lead past the finish line for the first time. Dolder Grand at 7-1 and Mighty Heart chased in second around the clubhouse turn as Tap It to Win galloped through the first two furlongs while extending his lead to two lengths. The order of finish did not change in the course of the next halfmile as Tap It to Win took his two length advantage through four furlongs in :49.05 and six furlongs 1:12.96 with Mighty Heart giving chase in second and Dolder Grand another length back in third. Tap It to Win was never threatened in the stretch under steady

urging from Hernandez as he crossed under the wire in 1:43.79 and a length-and-three-quarters ahead of Mighty Heart in second with Special Forces making a late move to finish a half-length farther back in third. Dolder Grand was fourth followed by Another Mystery. It was the first graded stakes victory for Tap It to Win and the seventh stakes victory this summer at Woodbine for Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation. Hernandez said the prerace instructions from the team of trainer Mark Casse were simple and provided a level of confidence throughout for both horse and rider. “They told me, ‘Raffi, just get to the lead. Do your thing there. Put him on the lead and the rest is up to the horse.’ When I looked back Michael Burns Photo turning for home, I said, ‘If they have something, they have to run faster than me because I still have plenty.” Tap It to Win paid $11.40 to win and now has won five of 14 career starts with two seconds and a third while earning $412,462. It was the first victory for the son of Tapit since winning the $100,000 NYRA Bets Sprint by four-and-a-half lengths at Tampa Bay Downs on March 28 and the first and only other career wireto-wire triumph since winning a first level allowance going a mileand-one-sixteenth at Belmont Park in June of 2020. Bred in Florida by Weber’s Live Oak Stud, Tap It to Win is out of Onepointhreekarats, by Medaglia d’Oro, making him a halfbrother to Weber’s multiple graded stakes-winner Souper Stonehenge, who won the Virgil (G3) and Jacques Cartier (G3) at Woodbine earlier this summer. Onepointhreekarats also has an unraced full-brother to Tap It to Win in Tapthespeedofsound. ■

Starship Nala took over turning for home but was quickly on even terms with Starship Bonita on the outside with Thissmytime not out of the running on rail as those three finished the half-mile in :45.22. But Starship Bonita took her momentum to the front inside the final sixteenth and won by three-quarters of a length in 1:22.92 on the fast track with Starship Nala second. Thissmytime was another three-quarters of a length back in third followed in order by 6-5 favorite Sound Machine, Sonar, Bramble Berry and Heiressall. Starship Bonita paid $71.80 on a $2 win ticket. Starship Nala was the second longest choice in the field at 16-1 and the $1 exacta paid $217.70.

Starship Bonita now has four wins in 20 career starts with three seconds and three thirds and the $70,570 first-place check increased her career earnings to $577,237. This is the second time she has taken the Sheer Drama having also won in 2018. Starship Bonita is by Gone Astray out of Happy Honeymoon, by Honour and Glory and was purchased for $72,000 by Starship Stables and Dwoskin out of the 2017 Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale where she was consigned by Whitman Sales. Bred in Florida by Mr. and Mrs. William A. T. Livingmybestlife Best in Lucky Spell Florida-bred Livingmybestlife made her career stakes debut a success with a twolength victory in the $75,000 Lucky Spell Stakes for 3-year-old fillies going six furlongs at Los Alamitos on Sept. 24. Trained by John Sadler for Hronis Racing LLC and ridden by Juan Hernandez, Livingmybestlife led from start to finish while completing the distance in 1:09.64. Breaking from the inside post one, Livingmybestlife sprinted to the front and had a length advantage on the Bob Baffert-trained Ginja in second as they finished the first two furlongs in :22.21. But Livingmybestlife still had her best running to go over the next four furlongs as she finished the half-mile in :44.74 while extending her lead to three lengths as they turned for home. Livingmybestlife galloped home to win by two lengths over a late-running Stella Noir in second with Ginja another length-and-a-half back in third. Forest Caraway was fourth with Pizzazz completing the order of finish. It was the third career win in six starts for Livingmybestlife, who also has two seconds in her young but consistent career. She de-

feated special weight maidens at Oaklawn Park in April going six furlongs in her second lifetime start after being claimed by Sadler out of her first start at Oaklawn when second on April 8. She then bounced back to win a $50,000 optional claiming starter allowance by two lengths going five-and-a-half furlongs at Santa Anita on June 18 in her first start for Sadler. She was then fourth in a first condition, $40,000 optional claiming allowance won by Lucky Spell rival Forest Caraway at Del Mar going six furlongs on Aug. 1 before finishing second to graded stakes-place Bella Vita under the same conditions, but at sixand-a-half furlongs, at Del Mar on Aug. 29. Livingmybestlife earned $42,000 for winning the Lucky Spell and increased her career revenues to $147,720. She is by Ocala Stud stallion The Big Beast out of Wall Street Lady, by Speightstown and was bred in Florida by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong. ■

He is a beloved Floridabred racehorse that displayed tons of talent. Andy Belfiore Named New FHBPA Executive Director Andy Belfiore, who has served as the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association’s project manager for the MidAtlantic Strategic Plan to Reduce Equine Fatalities for the last two years, has been named the new executive director of the Florida HBPA. Prior to working for the THA, she Andy Belfiore FHPBA photo was executive director for the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association for four years. As project manager for the Strategic Plan, Belfiore worked with the Plan’s architects, NYS Equine Medical Director Dr. Scott Palmer and Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association chairman Alan Foreman, to organize and implement all aspects of the initiative, including coordination among industry stakeholders and regulators in the region, and communication with the thoroughbred industry, legislators and the public. “The FHBPA board members as well as myself are delighted that Andy accepted our offer to serve as executive director,” FHBPA president Stephen Screnci said. “With her experience, knowledge and industry contacts, she’s undoubtedly the perfect fit.” A native of Massachusetts, Belfiore started her career in racing on the backstretch at Belmont Park, working as a hotwalker, groom, exercise rider and assistant trainer. After 10 years with the horses, she moved to the frontside at the track, and spent five years in the communications and marketing departments at NYRA. Belfiore left NYRA in 1993 to take the reins as editor-in-chief at the Thoroughbred Daily News, a position she held for 18 years. She was hired as director of communications for the NYTHA in December, 2011, and took over as executive director of in 2015. Belfiore has also served as executive director of the TAKE2 Second Career Thoroughbred Program Inc., and as co-chair of the board of the Backstretch Employee Service Team. “I’m looking forward to working with Stephen and the Florida HBPA,” Belfiore said. “Racing in South Florida faces its challenges but the horsemen have elected a terrific board, and Stephen has proven to be a strong leader. I’m excited to be a part of the team.” ■ ■

PRESIDENT’S FAREWELL PHIL MATTHEWS

H

aving served many years on the board, I have witnessed great dedication from the staff, board members and general membership in making our organization flourish. The officers of the board also serve additional duty on the executive committee and along with key staff members give of their time and energy to keep our organization focused and vibrant. As I depart the board, I’d like to give the folks who have served with me some deserved recognition and they include first vice-president Valerie Dailey, second vice-president Brent Fernung, treasurer George Russell and secretary Joe O’Farrell. I thank our entire board for being vital to the association, and the industry, as key stakeholders and leaders. I thank each for their ongoing service. I also want to give special recognition to our outgoing board member Richard Kent, who served the past six years as a committed, inquisitive and thoughtful addition to our board. The board appreciates his service and dedication to the industry. With great sadness, I want to pay tribute to Gil Campbell, husband to current board member, Marilyn, a long-time board member himself and past president of this organization, for many years, a leading breeder not only in our state of Florida but on the national stage and a great supporter of our industry and organization. More than the sum of all of his accomplishments in the breeding and racing industry and in the business world, Gil was a true gentleman, a friend to many and will be sorely missed. As I reflect on this year of presidency, it has been a year that as an association we had to be nimble and flexible, ever anticipating world and statewide events and how they would affect the thoroughbred industry and our organization. During the shutdown of the pandemic, off-track wagering increased greatly, while on-track wagering, the largest source of our breeders’ fund, fell away dramatically. As the tracks reopened to on-track bettors, the numbers began to shape our breeders awards in a positive way. By May of this year, the FTBOA board of directors saw a path forward to again increase breeders awards that it had been forced to lower the previous year. This was thanks to the depth of our industry with breeders willing to stay with it during uncertain times, and the commitment by industry players, like the racetracks that continued to provide a great product and Ocala Breeders’ Sales company that continued to provide a market for our horses. By May the board felt it would be fiscally prudent to reinstate the awards for second and third place finishes and to reinstate the stallion awards back up to 15% and to make those awards retroactive to January 1st of the year. Staff and the board realize fully that awards need to be as high as they can be to reward Florida breeders for their commitment.

Another key development in 2021 has been the continued success of our lucrative Florida Sire Phil Matthews, DVM Serita Hult Photo Stakes program. Since FTBOA began hosting the program in 2012, the purses have grown, the number of eligible horses has increased, and many FSS bonuses have been added. At Gulfstream Park this summer, the first leg of the Florida Sire Stakes broke all handle records of previous sire stakes programs, and the second leg also showed some of the strongest handle numbers in its history. This is thanks to the dedication of breeders who committed to breed to Florida stallions and to make your horses eligible for the program. The finals did not disappoint with stellar performances by Octane and Outfoxed. In addition to FSS success, I would like to note that each foal crop year of 2019 and 2020 produced more registered Florida-breds than reported preliminarily by The Jockey Club for those years. A bad bit of industry news occurred this year with the closing of Calder Race Course after 50 years of operation. The ramifications of this for our Association and to South Florida racing are many and none of them are good. Hardest felt is the direct loss to purses and the breeders fund. The Association is strategizing on ways these monies, and more, may be recovered and even increased. It is our fervent hope that we can work with other industry stake holders to allow Florida race tracks to flourish and our breeding industry to remain as strong as in years past. I can tell you that most of these pathways go through Tallahassee and that is why FTBOA has focused on creating, cultivating and strengthening the strongest network possible in our state capitol. Unfortunately, it requires more than talent and hard work, which we’ve had plenty of, but it also requires money. I suggest that you should consider making a financial contribution to our political action committee so we can successfully fight these battles in Tallahassee. Remember this can be done by automatically contributing a small percentage of your breeder awards. Legislators are bombarded every session by voters, organizations, and businesses trying to be heard and get their individual message across. Proper funding of our PAC is essential if we are to educate legislators about the economic impact our industry has on the state: a $2.6 billion industry which creates over 21,000 jobs and preserves the scenic vistas of beautiful farmland within our state. Donating a small percentage of every breeder award you earn really does make a difference in this process. On another note, we will be increasing member dues by $25 in 2022. No one likes price increases, but it is a small increase after ten years and ■

PRESIDENT’S FAREWELL the Association has continued to expand and elevate our membership services. I also would like to highlight some efforts of our board members. George Russell serves as the chair for the FTBOA farmland preservation task force that monitors and offers feedback to association management and stakeholders regarding land re-zoning and transportation developments that may impact Marion County and surrounding thoroughbred farm operations, particularly as it may pertain to the farmland preservation area. I should also point out that for a second year in a row, Florida’s preservation efforts have earned a national honor. The Robert N. Clay Award issued by the Equine Land Conservation Resource Group for outstanding efforts in the preservation of farmland has been given to John and Leslie Malone, owners of the iconic Bridlewood Farm, among other equine properties of distinction nationally. First-vice president Valerie Dailey has served as the chair of the charity committee for several years and has had a tough task to raise funds during the challenging last year and a half. Last year, the committee launched its first ever online silent auction with great success. This year, the committee launched its second online auction and moved it to in-person at the Florida Thoroughbred Charities charity day and golf tournament held in October. Under Valerie’s leadership, the committee added events with the Florida Thoroughbred Farm Managers and the Florida

Thoro-bred Fillies to create a full day for industry participants. The tournament was well attended and generous farms and businesses as well as the community supported the charity event, raising more than previous auctions. George Isaacs is the chair of the Marion County Thoroughbred Walk of Fame committee designated to select famed Florida-breds for the downtown sidewalks. His knowledge of the history of the region and the industry is valuable to this task. I would also like to highlight board member Laurine Fuller-Vargas who founded Run for the Ribbons in 2014 with the goal of showcasing the versatility of the thoroughbred after racing. Her efforts have led to the Florida Thoroughbred Transformation Expo now in its fifth year, being held at the Florida Horse Park. Her commitment to thoroughbred aftercare is one we all share and we congratulate and support her in her efforts. I would also like to congratulate all the advertisers who saw our vision to move Wire to Wire Racing Digest to a digital product. We have more eyes than ever seeing our Florida-bred successes in the publication as we’ve taken Florida Equine Communications into the 21st century. It has been the industry’s leading vehicle to showcase the Florida thoroughbred on an almost daily basis and now gives our advertisers more exposure than ever before. In closing, I thank you again for the honor of serving as your president and best of luck. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2021

Courageous Octane Fights Off Rivals to Win In Reality

BY BROCK SHERIDAN

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Arindel homebred Octane was challenged from the start in the mile-and-one-sixteenth Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes In Reality but eventually prevailed by a length-and-a-quarter to take the winner’s share of the $400,000 third leg of the rich series at Gulfstream Park on Sept. 25. The In Reality presented a field of 10 2-year-old colts and geldings by registered Florida sires. Octane and jockey Emisael Jaramillo encountered trouble from the start as they broke from post seven and bumped with Fivefive Six Champ to their outside. Undeterred, Octane made the lead for the run around the clubhouse turn with Cattin right with them to their outside as Big and Classy also showed speed. Down the backstretch, Octane kept the lead while racing on the rail but Cattin kept up the pressure to his outside as Desert Vixen-winner Cajun Magic began to bring pressure from three-wide. Octane began to draw away from his rivals around the turn before Cajun’s Magic started to make a menacing attack while three wide. But Octane never let Cajun’s Magic get close and maintained a clear margin during the entire length of the stretch and finished in a hand-timed 1:43.97. Cajun’s Magic held second by six-and-a-half lengths ahead of Cattin in third. They were followed in order by The Skipper Too, Clapton, Gold Special, Globes, Big and Classy, Fivefive Six Champ and One More Score. Octane paid $4.20. It was the third consecutive victory for Octane and his second in the Florida Sire Stakes after winning the $200,000 Affirmed going

seven furlongs at Gulfstream on Aug. 28. Trained by Carlos David, Octane broke his maiden in his second start going five furlongs against special weight company at Gulfstream on July 17 after finishing second to Lightning Larry in a five furlong maiden special weight on June 18, also at Gulfstream. Octane has now earned $410,000 in his three wins from four starts. “It looked like he had some pressure the whole way and then when those two horses came to him, he just wouldn’t let them by,” Arindel’s Brian Cohen said. “Carlos [David] has done a great job with him. [Octane] worked super fast on the farm and I wanted to send him a good one. He’s a little horse and Carlos never thought he’d be a mile-and-a-sixteenth horse, but he just gets out there and doesn’t stop. Jaramillo is the perfect rider for him so it was a great effort by Octane and a great job by [David and Jaramillo].” When asked about a possible trip to Del Mar for the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) on Nov. 5, Cohen kept the options open. “We’ll see how the numbers come back and talk to Carlos and see how we fit. There is no rush but we’ll make a decision.” Octane is by the Arindel stallion Brethren and is out of Star Recruit, by Aldebaran. Octane is a full-brother to stakes-placed Gatsby and also has a yearling full-sister and gave his sire his fourth victory in the Florida Sire Stakes Brethren. He also sired Cookie Dough, winner of the 2018 Susan’s Girl and My Dear Girl. “[Brethren] just has lots of runners. For all of the babies he’s had, he always has runners,” Cohen said. “We had four [son of Brethren] in here and the others ran well. They are not Octane but Brethren keeps producing winners. This year we were loaded in the boy’s race, but next year, we have a lot of nice fillies. So next year it will be a swap.”

Outfoxed Dominates My Dear Girl

Outfoxed was not the least bit shy in the $400,000 Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl as she crushed her seven rivals in the mile-and-one-sixteenth third leg of the lucrative series for 2-year-old fillies by registered Florida Sires at Gulfstream Park on Sept. 25. Ridden by Edgard Zayas from the inside post one, Outfoxed was on cue from the gate but was in no rush to be in front as Cajun Cousin and Devilette showed the way into the clubhouse turn. Devilette was able to take command from between horses as Outfoxed advanced on the rail, only to run into minor congestion and force Zayas to briefly check the aggressive filly.

The fleeting encounter appeared to have little impact on Outfoxed however, as she settled nicely for Zayas in a comfortable fourth. Devilette continued to lead in the run down the backstretch ahead of Cajun Cousin and My Sassenach in second and third respectively through a quarter-mile split of :29.50. “She was a little bit rank at first with this being the first time going long and I had to slow her down a little bit,” Zayas said. “I didn’t want to let her go to the lead and then get pressured. My plan was to keep her covered, get her in the clear and get going.” Devilette, Cajun Cousin and My Sassenach raced together around Continued on next page THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2021

the far turn but Zayas prompted Outfoxed and she responded with an impressive four-wide maneuver that propelled her to the front before they turned for home. From the top of the stretch on, the race was in little doubt as Outfoxed continued to run away from her rivals. Outfoxed finished nineand-a-half lengths in front of Veiled Profit in second in a time of 1:45.34 on the fast track. My Sassenach was third followed by My Devilette, Chacalosa, Baby Blue, Cajun Cousin and Sequin Lady. Outfoxed was the 1-5 favorite and paid $2.40 to win. “She was the best filly in the race and I just tried to keep her out of trouble,” Zayas continued. “She did everything as expected. She really ran hard and I think she is a very nice filly. I am excited to see her future.” Outfoxed, who is trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott for LNJ Foxwoods, has now won two of three career starts including an equally impressive victory in the seven furlong, $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl which she won by 13 ½ half lengths at Gulfstream on Aug. 28. She had returned to her native Florida for the Susan’s Girl after finishing second to future Spinaway Stakes (Grade 1)-winner Echo Zulu on debut in a maiden special weight going five-and-a-half fur-

longs on July 15 at Saratoga. In three starts, Outfoxed has now earned $372,000. “She has certainly done good things for us in the last 30 days, that’s for sure,” Mott said. “It looked like she was a little bit stuck down inside but once [Zayas] tipped her out, she went right to them. She looked good to me. She beat this group easily enough. We know the water can always get deeper. LNJ Foxwoods is the nom du course of Larry, Nanci and Jaime Roth, a parents-daughter team from Coral Gables, Fla. By Bridlewood Farm freshman sire Valiant Minister out of Savingtime, by Kantharos, Outfoxed was bred in Florida by Baoma Corp. Purchased for $360,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale in April by bloodstock agents Alex Solis and Jason Litt for LNJ Foxwoods, Outfoxed was consigned by Coastal Equine. In the Susan’s Girl, she became the first winner for Valiant Minister and is the first foal out of the stakes-winning mare Savingtime, by Kantharos. Savingtime also has a yearling filly by Bridlewood Farm resident Tunwoo and a weanling full-sister to Outfoxed. She also passed through the auction ring at OBS the 2020 October Sale where Jesse Hoppel purchased her for $27,000 from the Abbie Road Farm consignment. Outfoxed is the sixth winner in the Florida Sire Stakes for Zayas, who also won on Phantom Ro in the 2017 Dr. Fager, Chance It in the 2018 Dr. Fager, Two Sixty in the 2019 My Dear Girl and with Boca Boy in the 2020 In Reality. Mott was not in attendance but left Outfoxed in the hands of his former assistant and eight-time Florida Sire Stakes-winning trainer Ralph Nicks. Outfoxed had also been saddled by Nicks in the Susan’s Girl and she remained in Nicks’ South Florida barn to train up to the My Dear Girl. “She’s been training good and put on some weight,” Nicks said “Pretty simple. She is a nice horse and sold for a lot of money. She is in pretty good hands with [Bill Mott] so I would think she has a good opportunity to go and do something even bigger than this.” Mott said no decision had been made as whether Outfoxed would be headed to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Del Mar on Nov. 5 for her next start. “I think we’ll have to talk to the powers that be,” Mott said. “That would be a big step up, but we’ll see what they want to do.”

Pro Quality Runs Down Shivaree to Win Wildcat Heir After four consecutive third-place finishes, Pro Quality put it all together Sept. 25 at Gulfstream Park to win the $125,000 Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes Wildcat Heir. The Wildcat Heir featured a field of six 3-year-olds and older by registered Florida sires who went a mile on the main track. After an awkward break with jockey Luca Panici from post three, Pro Quality conceded the early running to Old Time Revival and Jesus Rios, who sprinted from post one and had daylight on Well Defined in second with Shivaree another length-and-a-half back in third as they left the mile chute and raced onto the main track. Meanwhile, Panici allowed Pro Quality to find a comfortable stride toward the back of the pack. After a quarter-mile in :23.91 and the halfmile in :46.91, Old Time Revival continued to lead around the turn as Shivaree and Well Defined began to threaten as Pro Quality moved closer to stalk from behind those three. At the top of the stretch, Shivaree and Well Defined were heads apart as Panici took Pro Quality three-wide. Shivaree opened up on his rivals in mid-stretch as Well Defined had a clear advantage in second on the rail with Pro Quality trying to make up ground on the outside. Pro Quality eventually wore down his rivals inside the final 110 yards, winning by a head in 1:36.15. Shivaree held second, three lengths faster than Noble Drama in third. Well Defined, Garter and Tie and Old Time Revival completed the order of finish. Pro Quality paid $13.60 to win. “He is just getting better. I think he is improving with every start as he matures,” trainer Ralph Catanese said. “I love the Florida Sire Stakes and would have run him in the series as a 2-year-old but he was just too big and not ready to run.” A 4-year-old son of the late Journeyman Stud stallion Exclusive Quality, Pro Quality did not make his first career start until August of his 3-year-old year and it took him three starts to win his first race which came against special weight maidens at Gulfstream Park in October of 2020.

After two thirds and a second in first condition optional claiming races in December, January and February, Pro Quality won two straight under the same conditions before his string to third-place began in a $60,000 overnight handicap won by Noble Drama at Gulfstream on May 22. In his race just prior to the Wildcat Heir, Pro Quality was third, beaten a length by winner Well Defined and runner-up Shivaree in the $100,000 Benny the Bull Stakes for Floridabreds on Aug. 14 going seven furlongs. Pro Quality is out of Arabella’s Tune, by Concorde’s Tune and was bred in Florida by owner Rodney G. Lundock D.V.M. He now sports a consistent record of four wins with a second and six thirds from 13 starts while earning $204,110. This will be the final running of the Wildcat Heir under the name of the late leading sire who stood at Journeyman Stud. The FTBOA announced in late September that the 2022 renewal will be named in honor of Gilbert G. Campbell, a FTBOA past president, board member and prominent Florida breeder who passed away on Sept. 16 at the age of 91. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2021

BY BROCK SHERIDAN Florida-bred star Medina Spirit defeated older horses for the first time with a monopolizing victory in the mile-and-one-eighth Awesome Again (Grade 1) at Santa Anita Oct. 2, earning a fees paid berth into the $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic to be run at Del Mar on Nov. 6. It was Medina Spirit’s second career Grade 1 after taking the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve at Churchill Downs on May 1. Should Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert elect to send Medina Spirit into the mile-and-one-quarter, the dark bay colt would try to become the fourth Florida-bred to win the prestigious event following Unbridled (1990), Skip Away (1997) and Mucho Macho Man (2013). Jockey John Velazquez was again aggressive from the start on Medina Spirit as they left post five in a sprint to take a clear lead into the clubhouse turn of the Awesome Again. Edwin Maldonado and Midcourt tucked into second on the rail while longshot and fellow Baffert trainee Azul Coast and 5-2 second choice Tripoli were in pur26

suit three and four-wide respectively. Around the turn, Medina Spirit briefly had a length-and-a-quarter lead after finishing the first quarter-mile in :23.34 before Flavian Prat sent Pacific Classic (G1)-runner-up Tizamagician between horses to race on the outside hip of the Derby winner for the run down the backstretch. Undeterred, Medina Spirit shook free for a comfortable, onelength advantage on Tizamagician through a half-mile in :47.72 before starting to draw clear around the far turn with ears pricked and appearing abundantly confident. After six furlongs in 1:11.76, Medina Spirit was still ahead of Tizamagician in second as Stilleto Boy and Tripoli tried to make up ground on the outside. But Velazquez cut the corner with Medina Spirit and began to draw off as they straightened away into the run for home. Medina Spirit took a three-length lead past the eighth-pole before increasing his winning margin to five-lengths while finishing in 1:49.67 on a fast track—resulting in a 107 Beyer Speed Figure as

reported by Jay Privman of Daily Racing Form. Stilleto Boy held on for second, two lengths ahead of Express Train in third. They were followed in order by Tripoli, Tizamagician, Idol, Azul Coast and Midcourt. “I keep saying and I probably sound like a broken record, but this guy, he has a ton of heart,” Velazquez, who has ridden Medina Spirit in his last six starts, said. “He’s very competitive and when the horses come to him, he gives you everything he can. That’s all you can ask of a horse. “He’s not very big, he’s not very beautiful, but obviously, he’s all heart and you can’t ask for anything else. The way he ran today, that was impressive. Maybe they will give him the credit he deserves now.” Medina Spirit won as the 6-5 favorite and paid $4.60 to win. “I’m happy for Zedan and what we have had to deal with,” Baffert said as he continues to deal with Medina Spirit testing positive for the therapeutic medication betamethasone following his Derby victory. Betamethazone is legal medication but is banned on race day in Kentucky. There has not been a hearing on the matter and no date has been set for an arraignment by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. “We stayed focused on the horses. The fans came out to see this horse and they are rooting for him,” Baffert continued. “I could tell by the crowd noise. They are all pulling for him. It’s an emotional win for us. Johnny V. can do whatever with the horse. He can wait, stalk, whatever. This horse keeps getting better and better.” It was the second consecutive victory for Medina Spirit after winning the $100,000 Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar by a length-and-a-quarter going a mile on Aug. 29. That was his first start since finishing third in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes won by Rombauer on May 15 two weeks after winning the Derby. Medina Spirit has now won five of nine career starts and it was his fourth graded stakes victory having also won the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita on Jan. 30. He was also second to stablemate Life is Good in both the Grade 3 Sham on Jan 2 and in the Grade 2 San Felipe before finishing second to Rock Your World in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 3–all at the Arcadia, Calif., track. The $180,000 first-place check for winning the Awesome Again pushed his career bankroll to $2,525,200. Medina Spirit is a son of Protonico out of Mongolian Changa, by Brilliant Speed and was bred in Florida by Gail Rice. He is a two-time graduate of Ocala Breeders’ Sales having sold to Amir Zedan’s Zedan Racing at the 2020 Open Sale in July for $35,000 where he was consigned by Whitman Sales. Christy Whitman purchased Medina Spirit for $1,000 in January of 2019 at the OBS Winter Mixed Sale. ■

Stakes winner of the $200,000 Susan’s Girl on Aug. 28 and the $400,000 My Dear Girl on Sept. 25 for owner LNJ Foxwoods and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, also earned $21,000 in Florida-bred awards for breeder Baoma Corporation from those two stakes. She is from the first crop of Bridlewood Farm stallion Valiant Minister out of Savingtime, by Kantharos. Other top 10 FTBOA money earners at Gulfstream during the Spring-Summer Season were Rough Entry ($19,600), a winner of five consecutive overnight races at Gulfstream; FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes and allowance optional claiming-winner Pro Quality ($19,320); dual stakes-winner Shea D Summer ($16,200); FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen-winner My Sassenach ($14,800), who was also third in both the Susan’s Girl and My Dear Girl; and

Don’t Get Khozy ($14,030), a three-time winner this summer at the allowance optional claiming and starter allowance levels. From Abiding Star ($2,600) to Zero Gravity ($460), or from multiple stakes-winner Octane to maiden claiming third-place finisher October Time ($670), there were plenty of Florida-breds banking more than $2.2 million in FTBOA breeders’ awards and stakes bonuses this spring and summer at Gulfstream Park. That money does not include additional funds used to enhance Florida-bred stakes and selected, open maiden special weight races during the season. So to all of those accomplished Florida-breds and their connections—from top to bottom—congratulations to all. Editor’s Note: A special thanks to Sheila Budden with the FTBOA for providing the data used in this column. ■

n Oct. 8, Florida Thoroughbred Charities raised more than $36,000 with a day of charity events including breakfast seminars, a luncheon with Kentucky Derby winning breeder Gail Rice, a silent auction, book signing, art show, a golf tournament and awards dinner/dance. The golf tournament was won by Stonehedge Farm South and Ocala Equine Hospital finished second. When accepting prizes, Stonehedge Farm South golfer Paul Sharp said, “This one’s for you Gil,” as he pointed up to the sky, signifying the deep loss felt by many upon the passing of the farm’s owner Gil Campbell in September. Phil Wright, the Chief Business Development Officer of the event’s title sponsor AdventHealth Ocala, spoke at the dinner highlighting the role their healthcare plays within the community and their mission. Marc Russell, general manager of Stone Creek Golf Club was key to the event’s success along with chair and FTBOA executive board member Valerie Dailey and golf co-chairs Debbie Green and Donna Delahunty. A number of celebrities attended the event including Mike McBath (Buffalo Bills), Mike Reilly (LA Rams), Reggie Branch (Washington Redskins Super Bowl 1984), Bob Stinson (Seattle Mariners), PGA instructor Mark Werning, Larry Green (Porsche auto racing, Matt Storm (World League of American Football), Steve Pisarkiewicz (Cardinals, Packers), Jacinto Vasquez (jockey) and Gerri Polci of the Four Seasons band.

Nov. 15 – The Florida Sire Stakes deadline is for yearlings whose May 15 payment was not made. It is $500. Missing this yearling deadline means a $5,000 fee on January 15. Do not assume a horse you purchased in a sale or privately has had a payment made. Sales catalogs list horses who are FSS eligible at the time of the sale because the deadline had not passed yet, meaning a payment may still be due. Contact FTBOA at 352-629-2160 to check. The two-year-old payment deadline is Jan. 15. Nov. 23 – Horse Farms Forever is hosting “Conservation Summit: Conversations about Conservation” at Ocala Breeders’ Sales from noon to 1:30 p.m. The educational workshop is about balancing growth while preserving Marion County's 193,000-acre Farmland Preservation Area. The purpose of the Summit is to inspire the preservation of the horse farms and agricultural lands that are fundamental to Marion County’s global brand as the Horse Capital of the World®. Speakers include John C. Malone, the largest private landowner in North America and historic Bridlewood Farm owner, and Ocala Metro Chamber and Economic Partnership CEO Kevin Sheilley. The results of the countywide “Quality of Life” survey will also be presented. FTBOA members receive 10% off with code FLTB2021 at https://www.horsefarmsforever.com/conservation-summit/. Membership renewals for 2022 will begin in December. The dues will increase by $25. The last time dues were increased was 2012. ■
