appy New Year to all and hoping that everyone had a wonderful holiday season. Here’s to 2022 and all the promise it offers to everyone, especially those with a fast and good looking young thoroughbred in the barn or already at the track. Looking back on 2021, we all were hoping we could eradicate COVID-19 from our lives and return to a semblance of normality that we remember as pre-pandemic, but delta and omicron variants of the disease remain as we head into 2022. However, we can still look back at the previous 12 months and be grateful to the some Florida-bred stars that made our year at the racetrack and on the farm enjoyable. In no particular order of importance or excitement, here are a few of the highlights as I saw them. In November of 2020, the Wesley Ward-trained Golden Pal became the 29th Florida-bred winner of a Breeders’ Cup race when he won the Grade 2 Juvenile Turf Sprint before doubling down in 2021 and becoming the first Florida-bred to win two Breeders’ Cups as he dominated the Grade 1 Turf Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 6. Bred by Randall E. Lowe and owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg, Golden Pal finished 2021 with career earnings of more than $1.2 million with five wins in eight starts. On the first Saturday in May, Medina Spirit left the starting gate at Churchill Downs as a 12-1 outsider for the Hall of Fame team of trainer Bob Baffert and jockey John Velazquez. A little longer than two minutes later, the diminutive dark brown colt was the seventh Florida-bred winner of the Run for the Roses. While that victory has been stained by a yet to be resolved positive test for the therapeutic, but banned substance betamethasone, Medina Spirit went on to finish third in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes won by Rombauer, win the $100,500 Shared Belief at Del Mar, defeat older horses in the Grade 1 Awesome Again at Santa Anita and finish second in the Grade 1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic won by likely Horse of the Year Knicks Go at Del Mar. Medina Spirit suddenly died after a workout at Santa Anita on Dec. 6 while preparing for a start in the $20 million Saudi Classic and the results of his necropsy are not yet available. Regardless of the post mortem findings or the Derby rulings, Medina Spirit

gave breeder Gail Rice, owner Amr Zedan and all of his fans a star we all enjoyed as he finished his career with five wins in 10 starts while earning $3.5 million. Firenze Fire finished a five-year career on the track with a record fifth appearance in the Breeders’ Cup as the Mr. Amore Stable homebred retired with 14 wins from 38 starts and career earnings of $2.7 million. Although eighth in the Grade 1 Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint to finish his career, Firenze Fire won at least two stakes in each of his five years on the track and won a graded stakes in four of those campaigns including consecutive victories in the Grade 2 True North and Grade 3 Runhappy Stakes in 2021. Rustlewood Farm homebred Pappacap came up just short to finish second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile but finishes 2021 at top the leaderboard of qualifiers for the 2022 Kentucky Derby. The Mark Casse trainee won the Grade 2 Best Pal at Del Mar to become a legitimate Derby hopeful and finish 2021 with two wins from five starts and earnings of $576,000. Extravagant Kid made an international splash on March 27 when he won the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint Sponsored by Azizi Developments at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. Bred in Florida by Vicino Racing Stables, Extravagant Kid finished 2021 with 15 career wins from 54 starts and earnings of $1,684,733. He is trained by Brendan Walsh for DARRS Inc. and although he finished out of the money, the 8-year-old ended 2021 with his second appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Florida breeders’ were treated to one of the more impressive group of first crop sires in 2021 headed by Pleasant Acres Stallions’ Neolithic, who as of this writing had $633,609 in progeny earnings with stakes-winners Make It Big and Cattin to his credit. Ocala Stud’s Noble Bird progeny racked up $479,693 as of this writing and was represented by stakes-winner Strategic Bird while Bridlewood’s Valiant Minister ($432,075 in progeny earnings) produced Outfoxed, winner of two filly divisions of the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes. The list of accomplished Florida-breds and Florida breeders’ is too long for this column and we tip our cap to all mentioned and not mentioned. Let’s hope this topic in the January 2023 issue is filled with pages and pages of thoroughbreds and horsepersons from the Sunshine State who produced championship credentials in 2022. n

He was seven times stakes-placed with a high of $87,595 per start in his best year during his career. Gone Astray entered into stud in 2012 and quickly proved his dominance in the industry as a prolific and consistent producer. As of Oct. 27, he has accumulated $12,784,589 in progeny earnings with an average of $49,361 per starter. Out of 259 runners, he has 175 winners that include 10 black type winners, 19 black type-placed, and two graded stakes winners. Consistently on the list of Leading Florida Sires, Gone Astray was the third-ranked first crop sire (2015), second-ranked, second crop sire (2016), third-ranked, third crop sire (2017), fourth-rated fourth crop sire (2018), fourth-ranked fifth crop sire (2019), and third-ranked sixth crop sire (2020). As a stallion, Gone Astray has been extremely well received and has proven success with his progeny. Livingmybestlife Wins Second Consecutive Stakes in Seashell Livingmybestlife took her second added-money event in as many starts Nov. 3 at Del Mar when the Florida-bred daughter of The Big Beast won the $103,750 Seashell Stakes by a length-and-a-half. Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Livingmybestlife defeated four other 3-year-old fillies going a mile on the main track. Miss Fia, a 14-1 longshot, broke best of all from post four but was quickly overtaken by Livingmybestlife, who went straight to the lead from the outside post five. Livingmybestlife quickly cleared her rivals into the clubhouse turn and shifted to the two path where she put a two-length margin on Miss Fia in second with 2-5 favorite Moonlight d’Oro, who stumbled at the start, racing another length farther back in third. Livingmybestlife finished the first quarter-mile in a controlled :23.16 before leading by a length-and-ahalf down the backstretch with Moonlight d’Oro and Paige Anne racing together in second just before they finished the half-mile in :46.38. Livingmybestlife continued to show the way with a clear lead around far turn as Paige Anne took second while racing two wide and a length ahead of Moonlight d’Oro in third on the rail. Livingmybestlife extended her lead again to two-anda-half lengths turning for home as Moonlight d’Oro

moved into second while passing Paige Anne on third. But Livingmybestlife was in full stride down the stretch and was never challenged by the favorite as Clockstrikestwelve moved into third. Livingmybestlife finished the distance in 1:36.53 on the fast track and was a still a length-and-a-half clear under the wire. Moonlight d’Oro was second, three-and-aquarter lengths faster than Clockstrikestwelve in third. Paige Anne was fourth followed by Miss Fia in fifth. Livingmybestlife paid $7.40 to win as the 5-2 second choice. Trained by John Sadler, Livingmybestlife also won the $75,000 Lucky Spell Stakes at Los Alamitos Race Course going six furlongs on Sept. 24, also with Hernandez aboard. Livingmybestlife broke her maiden in her second start by a neck at Oaklawn Park on April 24 before returning to her base in Southern California to win a $50,000 optional claiming starter allowance at Santa Anita by two lengths after five-and-a-half furlongs on June 18. She then finished fourth behind winner Forest Caraway and second to future Betty Grable Stakes-winner Bella Vita in two first level, $40,000 optional claiming races at Del Mar in August before winning the Lucky Spell. Livingmybestlife is out of Wall Street Lady, by Speightstown and she was bred in Florida by Alex Leiblong and JoAnn Leiblong of Conway, Ark. Livingmybestlife is the second foal out of Wall Street Lady, who also produced an unnamed full brother by The Big Beast in 2017. She also has an unnamed weanling colt by Bal a Bali (Brz) and was bred to Unbridled Express in 2021. Wall Street Lady went through the 2019 Winter Mixed Sale at Ocala Breeders’ Sales in foal to The Big Beast where she was purchased by Maccabee Farms from the Kelli Mitchell consignment for $32,000. Livingmybestlife has now won four of seven career starts with two seconds while earning $209,970. n

Inthewinnerscircle Edges Stablemate in Cellars Shiraz Live Oak Plantation’s Inthewinnerscircle edged stablemate Mademoiselle Nova with a well-timed late rally to capture the $65,000 Cellars Shiraz on Nov. 5 at Gulfstream Park. The Mark Casse-trained daughter of Medaglia d’Oro out of Sweet Bernardini, by Bernardini, a stakes winner on turf last year at Gulfstream Park West, won her first stakes on Tapeta in her all-weather debut in the about a mile-and-70-yard stakes for 3-year-old fillies. Casse-trained Mademoiselle Nova, who pressed the pace set by Can’t Buy Love into the stretch, appeared to be on her way to victory before Inthewinnerscircle got the better of her late following a perfectly executed ride by Cristian Torres. The homebred Inthewinnerscircle, who trailed the field while saving ground, was angled off the rail at the top of the stretch, where she launched a three-wide drive to victory. Inthewinnerscircle paid $13.40 to win. “We thought Mademoiselle Nova would be close, but probably not that close. She was sitting second the whole way. Inthewinner-

scircle, she can be a little tardy coming from the gate. She had a bit of a slow start and we saw her at the back of the pack, but we know that she has such a great kick it can make up for it,” Casse’s South Florida assistant Nick Tomlinson said. “I honestly didn’t see Cristian until about the eighth pole after he swung her out and got her going. A great ride by him, and I’m very happy for the connections.” Inthewinnerscircle, who ran about a mileand-70-yards in 1:42.17, edged runner-up Mademoiselle Nova by a neck. Tik Tok Famous finished another neck back in third. n

Mimajoon Wins First of Two Golden Gate Debutante Divisions Florida-bred Mimajoon and jockey William Antongeorgi III upset the first of two divisions of the Golden Gate Debutante for 2-year-old fillies Nov. 26 at Golden Gate Fields as she paid $34.00 to win as a 16-1 longshot. The first division offered a purse of $52,350 while the second division posted a purse of $65,850 with eight starters. Mimajoon was making her third career start in the Golden Gate Debutante after

breaking her maiden in her second start by a half-length against special weight maiden fillies at Golden Gate going five furlongs on the turf, a race she won while leading from start to finish. The bay daughter of Fed Biz flashed her speed again in the Golden Gate Debutante and she was first from the gate while breaking from post four in the field of five. Baby Steps, the 5-2 second choice in the wagering, was also away fast in post seven but she and jockey Pedro Fuentes could not keep pace with Mimajoon who went the first quarter-mile in a rapid :21.72 while keeping a length clear. Antongeorgi patiently guided Mimajoon around the far turn as she maintained her lead on Baby Steps to while slowing down to complete the half-mile in :45.40. But Mimajoon extended that margin to two-and-a-half lengths in the stretch before even-money favorite Uncorked made a late run to get second while falling short to Mimajoon by a lengthand-a-quarter under the wire. Strategic Bird Determined in Sandpiper Stakes Victory Gary Barber’s Florida-bred Strategic Bird won a stretch-long battle with Devine Charger Dec. 4 at Tampa Bay Downs as the 2-year-old filly remained undefeated in two starts with a victory in the $50,000 Sandpiper Stakes. The Sandpiper purse included a $50,000 win bonus for runners eligible for the Florida Sire Stakes but Strategic Bird did not qualify. A daughter of Ocala Stud’s successful freshman sire Noble Bird, Strategic Bird was the even money favorite among the nine fillies in the six furlong Sandpiper. She began her career with a flashy performance at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 13 when the Mark Casse trainee dominated a field of Florida-bred, maiden special weight fillies,

winning by 12 ¾ lengths over five-and-a-half furlongs. She led at every point of call in her debut including a half-mile in :45 flat while leading by two lengths. She kept her record spotless in the Sandpiper as she broke well from post one with Antonio Gallardo aboard and sprinted to a quick lead ahead of Florida-bred She’s So Beautiful from the outside post 10 and Devine Charger also to her outside in post two. Devine Charger tried to keep pace but Strategic Bird flashed a quick first-quarter-mile in :21.93 and had a length-and-half lead moving into the turn. But Devine Charger made another run at Strategic Bird around the far turn and the two locked up at the top of the stretch after a half-mile in :44.91. After taking their battle to the finish, Strategic Bird raced under the wire a neck in front of Devine Charger with Florida-bred Chasing Happiness another seven lengths back in third. They were followed by She’s So Beautiful, Florida-bred Devilette, Tahaweel, Jacknife and She’s Peacky Keen. Dia de Sol was scratched. “That was something incredible,” winning jockey Antonio Gallardo said. “At one point I was like, ‘Oh, ----.’ I was getting a little worried because she felt the pressure from that gray horse [Devine Charger], but she’s a feisty filly.”

Strategic Bird finished in 1:10.85 on the fast track, the fourth fastest in 44 runnings of the Sandpiper. She paid $4 to win. In her two starts, Strategic Bird has $57,000 in career earnings. Strategic Bird is out of the unraced Strategize, by Florida-bred Afleet Alex. She was bred by John Oxley Living Trust. Strategize also has an unnamed weanling colt who is a full brother to Strategic Bird. She was bred to Noble Bird again in 2021. Cattin Takes Down Inaugural and $50,000 FSS Win Bonus Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt and Spendthrift Farm’s Cattin took down a good payday Dec. 4 at Tampa Bay Downs with a victory in the $100,000 Inaugural Stakes against eight other 2-years-olds going six furlongs. With $30,000, the winner’s share of the $50,000 Sandpiper, and the $50,000 win bonus as an eligible Florida Sire Stakes runner as presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, the son of Pleasant Acres Stallion Neolithic booked $80,000 in winnings. Cattin is a veteran of the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes last year at Gulfstream Park when fourth in the $200,000 Affirmed on Aug. 28 and third in the $400,000 In Reality on Sept. 24, both won by Octane. Making his first start since the In Reality, the Ralph Nicks-trained Cattin had Samy Camacho aboard for the first time and went to Tampa Bay Downs from his base at Gulfstream Park with assistant trainer Sonny Righter. Florida-bred Full Disclosure broke fast from post four along with Magical Mousse to his inside and those two emerged together

from a tight pack in the initial strides to finish a first quarter-mile in :22.39 and the half-mile in :45.35. Around the turn, Cattin and Florida-bred Lightening Larry began to threaten on the outside before Cattin began to pull away from between horses to get free in the stretch. Lightening Larry tried to stay with the leader but Cattin was two-and-a-half lengths clear in the stretch and maintained that margin under the wire in 1:10.90 on the fast track. Lightening Larry finished a strong second, five-and-three-qua rters lengths ahead of Grand Valley in third. They were followed in order by Magical Mousse, Old Town Road, Full Disclosure, 8-5 favorite Concrete Glory and Whistlewhileyoumow. Cattin paid $11.40 to win. “I thought he would run good today,” Righter said. “I was worried he might get shuffled back early, but Samy [Camacho] got him back in the race pretty quick and he caught a good trip after that. He was feeling good going into the race and he ran huge.” Camacho said getting the inside position on Lightening Larry before the turn was a key to the winning trip. “I got a chance to go inside [Lightening Larry] and when I put my horse in the clear,

I thought the race was over,” Camacho said. “I feel great because Ralph Nicks gave me this great opportunity and I want to keep it going.” Cattin now has two wins in four starts with a third with earnings of $164,550. The Heiligbrodts purchased Cattin for $25,000 from the Beth Bayer consignment at the 2020 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Winter-Mixed Sale. Cattin is a bay colt out of Adios Dawn, by Ocala Stud’s sire Adios Charlie and was bred by Curtis Mikkelsen and Patricia Horth. Cattin is the first foal from the unraced Adios Dawn, who also has a unnamed yearling colt by Pleasant Acres Stallions popular Bucchero and an unnamed weanling full-brother. Adios Dawn was bred again to Neolithic in 2021.

Sugar Fix Claim Sweetened With Claiming Crown Tiara Score With three wins since being claimed for $40,000 by current trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. out of a winning effort in July of last year, Florida-bred Sugar Fix had already proven to be a solid acquisition before the $95,000 Claiming Crown Tiara Starter Stakes Dec. 4 at Gulfstream Park. The Tiara was one of nine starter stakes worth $810,000 in purses on the 23rd Claiming Crown program, being held at Gulfstream for the 10th consecutive year. Created by the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association in partnership with the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, the Claiming Crown rewards and pays tribute to the claiming horses and their horsemen who provide the foundation for day-to-day racing programs around the country. Sugar Fix broke well from post seven with Edgard Zayas aboard and was able to find a comfortable position just to the outside of 60-1 longshot Bean Counter while running behind the early speed of Florida-bred Centsless Drama and Act Like Artie going into the clubhouse turn. Centsless Drama finished the first quarter-mile alone in :22.91 while running a halflength ahead of Act Like Artie in second with Bean Counter and Sugar Fix still together in a joint third. Florida Focus Drama led by as much as a length-and-a-half with the running order remaining the same through a half-mile in :47.26. Into the far turn, Zayas sent Sugar Fix to a three-wide challenge as she turned for home on even terms with Centsless Drama on the rail and Act Like Artie between horses after completing six furlongs in :1:10.59. Sugar Fix shot to the lead inside the final furlong as Passion Plus began to rally into the second spot while Centsless Drama and Act Like Artie faded. Zayas hand rode Sugar Fix to a lengthand-a-half victory in 1:40.19 with Passion Plus completing the Florida-bred exacta, three-quarters of a length ahead of Whimsical Muse in third. They were followed by Kahiko, Isadorable Alda, Act Like Artie, Toned Up, Bean Counter, Starship Mallomar, Centsless Drama and Florid-bred Una Luna. Florida-bred Classy Woman was scratched. It was the second straight victory for Zayas and Joseph, who teamed up with Face of Victory in the $75,000 Express the race before. Sugar Fix was also able to avenge her loss in last year’s Tiara when she finished second to Queens Embrace after leading by a lengthand-a-half in deep stretch. “Last year, she got a good trip, she just got beat. This year, I think she actually went into the race better,” Joseph said. “Last year, she won her prep at Kentucky Downs and then kind of lost her way. I don’t think she was at her best. This year, she got beat out there and then we couldn’t get a race to go so she had a good freshening. I thought today she ran a good race. It was a tough race. You never know if you’re going to win.” Sugar Fix paid $8.40 to win. Sugar Fix is by Treasure Beach (GB) out of D Fifty, by Arch and was bred by Ballybrit Stable. Medina Spirit Collapses and Dies After Workout Florida-bred Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1)-winner Medina Spirit collapsed and died after a workout at Santa Anita Dec. 6. Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert for Amr Zedan’s Zedan Racing Stable Inc., Medina Spirit worked five furlongs in 1:01.40 before collapsing. In a statement released by the California Horse Racing Board on Dec. 6, the state regulatory body said the official cause of the unexpected death will be determined by a full postmortem examination. “The 3-year-old colt Medina Spirit was just completing a workout on the main track at Santa Anita [Dec. 6] when he collapsed near the finish line. He died immediately,” according to the CHRB statement. “This is termed a sudden death. All horses that die within facilities regulated by the California Horse Racing Board undergo postmortem [necropsy] examination at a California Animal Health and Food Safety diagnostic laboratory under the auspices of the University of California, Davis. Cause of death cannot be determined

until the necropsy and toxicology tests have been completed.” By Protonico out of Mongolian Changa, by Brilliant Speed, Medina Spirit has won half of his 10 career races with four seconds and a third while earning $3,545,200, which is eighth on the all-time list of Florida-bred money earners. However, his victory in the Kentucky Derby remains in question after his post-race test revealed traces of the therapeutic substance betamethasone, which is banned on race day in Kentucky. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has not yet scheduled a hearing nor subsequently made a ruling on the Kentucky Derby matter due to delays in the sample evaluation process and legal wrangling by attorneys for Baffert and Zedan. Bred in Florida by Gail Rice, Medina Spirit was most recently second to Knicks Go in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar on Nov. 6. He also won the Grade 1 Awesome Again against older horses at Santa Anita on Oct. 2, the $100,000 Shared Belief at Del Mar on Aug. 29 and the Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita on Jan 30. BY BROCK SHERIDAN XXXXXX1 OLDSMAR, FL—R Adios Jersey remained perfect in her sixth career start as the Florida-bred filly cruised to an 11-length victory against four rivals in the $100,000 Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes City of Ocala at Tampa Bay Downs on Dec. 11. The daughter of Ocala Stud stallion Adios Charlie out of Marion Theatre, by Montbrook led from the start to complete the seven furlongs in 1:22.60 while under wraps from jockey Paco Lopez. The time was just .20 off of the stakes record set by Surprise Wedding in the 2017 City of Ocala. The Florida Sire Stakes City of Ocala is for fillies and mares, 3-years-old and older who are by FTBOA-registered Florida stallions and was the co-feature on the Tampa Bay Downs program with the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Marion County for eligible colts and geldings, 3-years-old and older who also competed over seven furlongs. Breaking from post two, R Adios Jersey went right to the front and quickly had daylight on 10-1 choice Bramble Berry and jockey Jose Ferrer to her outside. Although it appeared as though Lopez tried to keep the speedy filly under a controlled rein, R Adios Jersey easily sprinted through a first quarter-mile in a quick :21.79 while a length-and-a-half ahead of Bramble Berry in second with Starship Nala another length farther back in third. R Adios Jersey widened that margin while racing around the bend and turned for home three lengths in front after a half-mile in a more reasonable :44.35. Starship Nala made a nice three-wide run on the turn to take over the second spot but was never a threat. The quick fractions had no impact on the bay filly as she drew off in the stretch under a hand ride from Lopez to dominate her rivals with little effort. Starship Nala finished second, a length-and-a-half faster than Bramble Berry in third. Heiressall was fourth with Island Magic completing the order of finish. R Adios Jersey was the 1-5 favorite and returned $2.40 to win. “That was kind of easy, but when you have a very nice, fast filly like that, it can look easy,” Lopez said. “I wanted her to go in 22 [seconds] and 46 [for the quarter-mile and the half-mile splits], but [21.79] and [44.35]… she’s just very fast. She wanted to go so hard but I didn’t fight her too much because she was doing it very comfortable. She was really sharp today and [trainer] Georgina [Baxter] did a great job getting her ready.” Richard Averill, who co-owns the filly under his Averill Racing LLC banner with Anthony Mattera’s ATM Racing, said former major league outfielder Jayson Werth also became a partner recently. “She is not just one of the better fillies in Florida but maybe one of the fastest in training,” Averill said. “Through four wins, five wins and now six wins, she is definitely the nicest horse I’ve ever owned. She just keeps on winning and now it’s a lot of pressure every time she runs.” 19

Averill does not shy away from the pressure however, as he had invited so many guests into the winner’s circle that the win picture had to be moved onto the track to accommodate the large party. “We wanted this race for the hometown team and it’s great when the plan comes together,” Averill, a resident of Bradenton, Fla., said. “I always try to plan a party here with my friends and family and co-workers, and right now it’s a feeling of stress relief because I don’t have to answer all the questions of ‘why didn’t you win.’ It’s fun to get new people into the game, like Anthony [Mattera], who moved down from New Jersey, and Jayson [Werth], and today is a day they will always remember in a good way.” R Adios Jersey won her debut by 12 ½ lengths in December of 2020 before winning a first condition allowance and a $50,000 optional claiming starter allowance in February, both also at Gulfstream. She then won the Stonehedge Farm South Sophomore Fillies at Tampa Bay Downs on March 28 before taking a five-month break away from the races. Baxter then sent her to Charles Town for the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks on Aug. 27 and she won by a length-and-a-half while leading from start to finish. The City of Ocala was her first start since the Charles Town win and the $60,000 first-place check increased her career bankroll to $427,400 in six starts. Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud and J. Michael O’Farrell, R Adios Jersey was purchased by Averill for $12,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale in 2020 where she was consigned by Ocala Stud. Marion Theatre has four winners from six starters including October Time, a 2-year-old colt by Uncaptured who has not won in five starts. She also has an unnamed yearling colt by Greenpointcrusader and a weanling filly by The Big Beast. She was bred to Win Win Win in 2021.

Tenacious Rally Gives Shivaree Marion County Win Jacks or Better Farm Inc.’s Shivaree defended his title in the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Marion County with a determined effort that started with a four-wide trip around the turn and continued with a stretch-long chase that resulted with a head victory in the final strides. The Marion County Stakes featured a field of six eligible colts and geldings, 3-years-old and older, who are by registered Florida sires and went seven furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs. Shivaree broke fifth of six in the Marion County and jockey Samy Camacho allowed him to keep that position down the backstretch while racing seven lengths off of front-runner Well Defined with R Mercedes Boy second. Well Defined finished the first quarter-mile in :22.08 with R Mercedes Boy still giving chase in second as they raced into the turn where Shivaree began to pass horses on the outside. R Mercedes Boy shook off Well Defined inside the final furlong as Shivaree continued to edge closer with every stride on the outside. R Mercedes Boy fought off his late running rival until the final strides when Shivaree stuck a head in front at the wire to finish in 1:22.58. R Mercedes Boy was a length-and-a-quarter ahead of Well Defined in third with Cajun Casanova fourth. They were followed in order the Grainger County and Drama Chorus. Shivaree paid $4.40 to win as the 6-5 favorite. “He’s gritty and he’s very competitive. He makes up for his size in try,” trainer Ralph Nicks told the Tampa Bay Downs publicity staff from his base at Gulfstream Park. “I knew he would keep grinding and luckily he had room to get there. Very rarely is he not competitive.” The suspenseful stretch run by Shivaree also gave Camacho

concern. “I was a little worried when that horse gave another kick,” Camacho said. “But my horse kept trying. I rode this horse in two stakes at Gulfstream this year and finished second by a neck and second by a head. So I know him and he did a great job. He tries all the time.” Camacho was referring to Shivaree’s last two starts when second to Well Defined in the $100,000 Benny the Bull on Aug. 14 and to Pro Quality in the $125,000 Wildcat Heir on Sept. 25. At its regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 22, 2021, the board of directors of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association considered the following: 1) The board welcomed new director George Isaacs and returning directors Paul Bulmahn, Nick de Meric, Laurine Fuller-Vargas, and George Russell. They are filling the five director vacancies on the 15-member FTBOA board that come up each year, for three-year terms running until October 2024. 2) The board heard remarks from FTBOA president Dr. Phil Matthews regarding a proposal to increase foal registration fees beginning with the foals of 2022. The last such increase was in 1996. The board unanimously approved the proposal, increasing the foal registration fee by $50 for the Aug. 31 foal registration deadline for members and by $100 for non-members; increasing the foal registration fee by $50 for the Dec. 31 foal registration deadline for members and by $150 for non-members; and increasing the foal registration fee by $100 for yearlings for members and by $150 for non-members. Foal registration fees for 2-yearolds and up remain unchanged. The increased fees would remain in the mid-range when compared to breeders’ associations across the country. The new fees would be as follows: Foal registration by Aug. 31 is $125 for members, $300 for non-members. Foal registration Sept. 1 through Dec. 31 is $200 for members, $500 for non-members. Yearling registration is $400 for members, $800 for non-members. The 2-year-old or older fees remain unchanged. 3) The board heard a farewell and thank you from president Matthews, the contents of which were covered in the November issue of The Florida Horse. Matthews emphasized the importance of continuing our legislative efforts and the need to focus on growing the industry’s PAC. 4) The board voted in the following slate of new officers for 2021-2022: Valerie Dailey, president; George Isaacs, first vice president; George Russell, second vice president; Brent Fernung, treasurer; and Joe O’Farrell, secretary. 24

5) The board received a briefing from CEO Lonny Powell. He thanked outgoing president Matthews for his service and noted he would still remain on the board as immediate past president. He also recognized outgoing board member Richard Kent for his contributions. Powell highlighted the 2021 Annual Membership Meeting held via Zoom right before the board meeting. He noted that the Zoom format enhanced member participation at the 2020 Meeting and anticipated the same for 2021. Powell also discussed recent meetings with the tracks and horsemen surrounding the 2022 Florida-Bred racing program. The Tampa Bay Downs program for 2022 is expected to be similar to the one for 2021. 6) The board received briefings from Matt Bryan and Warren Husband on the political and legal climate following the state’s entry into a new Gaming Compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the accompanying 2021 legislation, which would expand gaming at tribal facilities and allow on-line and in-person sports betting, including at pari-mutuels. 7) The board received a briefing from board member Laurine Fuller-Vargas, who founded the Run for the Ribbons horse show series to publicize the versatility of retired thoroughbreds. She also shared exciting changes to the 5th Florida Thoroughbred Transformation Expo at the Florida Horse Park to be held Dec. 10-12, and how the Expo will have a more national appeal and give more thoroughbreds an opportunity to participate. 8) The board received a briefing from Charity Committee Chair Valerie Dailey regarding the Florida Thoroughbred Charities golf tournament, which was a fundraising success. At its regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 19, the board of directors of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association considered the following: 1) The board reviewed a recently issued Independent Auditors’ Report regarding the financial statements of the FTBOA and its subsidiaries for the year ended June 30, 2021, including statements of activities and cash flows and related notes. The Independent Auditors’ Report was prepared by the accounting firm of Purvis, Gray & Company, a regional accounting firm founded in 1946 that has extensive audit experience with nonprofit organizations. After the auditors’ presentation and answers to board members’ questions, the FTBOA board of directors voted to accept the Independent Auditors’ Report as presented. This report was previously presented by the auditors to the FTBOA audit committee and the FTBOA executive committee. 2) The board heard opening remarks from FTBOA president Valerie Dailey, who thanked continuing board members for their service and welcomed new board members. After a recent FTBOA visit to Tallahassee to meet with state legislators, she highlighted the importance to the industry of staying actively engaged with the legislature in Tallahassee. 3) The board received a briefing from CEO Lonny Powell summarizing the FTBOA executive committee meeting conducted via Zoom on Nov. 18, 2021. The portion of the Nov. 18 meeting dealing with the executive committee’s consideration of the 2022 Florida-bred stakes agreement for Tampa Bay Downs and the 2022 Florida-bred stakes agreement for Gulfstream Park was open to the public to provide comments and/or observe the executive committee’s proceedings. As approved by the executive committee, Powell noted that the Florida-bred incentive program at Tampa Bay Downs for 2022 will be the same as in 2021, including the same supplements and purses. The Florida-bred incentive program at Gulfstream Park for 2022 will include the lucrative Florida Sire Stakes slated from July-September and the popular FBIF program bonuses and supplements promoting 2-year-olds, with additional FBIF specifics coming in January. The program includes a $100,000 bonus to an FSS-eligible horse that wins the Florida Derby. The Wildcat Heir Stakes was renamed in honor of Gil Campbell, now the Gil Campbell Memorial Stakes, and is open to Florida-breds. (4) The board received an update from CEO Lonny Powell 26

on the 2022 Florida Thoroughbred Breeder and Stallion Awards Plan, which was recently approved by the state and which mirrors the 2021 Awards Plan. (5) The board received briefings from Matt Bryan and Warren Husband on political and legal developments following the state’s entry into a new Gaming Compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the passage of accompanying 2021 legislation, which would expand gaming at tribal facilities and allow on-line and in-person sports betting, including at pari-mutuels. Bryan highlighted the Florida Legislature’s recent three-day special session focusing on COVID-19 issues. The special session gave the FTBOA an opportunity to get in front of legislators on matters related to the thoroughbred industry. Bryan also highlighted the upcoming legislative session starting in January. Husband discussed ongoing legal challenges to the new Seminole Compact, as well as the separate gaming-related statewide initiative petition drives backed by Draft Kings/Fan Duel and Las Vegas Sands. 6) The board received a briefing from board member Bobby Jones regarding the launch of the Equine Career Academy, a new program at Marion County Public Schools. The goal is for students in eighth grade to register for a four-year, hands-on equine-focused curriculum, which would make them employable on horse farms, able to pursue equine certifications, and/or prepared to attend a college or university with an equine program. 7) Important dates and deadlines were provided to the board by Tammy Gantt, including the Jan. 15 Florida Sire Stakes 2-yearold payment deadline for $250, which increases to $500 from Jan. 16 - Feb. 28, and the last chance deadline for yearlings that may have missed the earlier payment deadlines (Jan. 15 for $5,000). Additional dates included the Florida Sire Stakes races at Tampa Bay Downs on Dec. 11, the Florida Thoroughbred Transformational Expo on Dec. 10-12, and the Boys and Girls Club “Club Give” toy and gift drive ending Dec. 10. No FTBOA holiday open house is planned for 2021 due to COVID concerns. 8) Gantt also highlighted to the board the trademarks held by the FTBOA and their importance as a brand and as a promotional mechanism for the goods and services of the FTBOA. Those trademarks are Horse Capital of the World® and Ocala/Marion County Horse Capital of the World®. n

Old Warriors Florida-bred millionaires Extravagant Kid and C Z Rocket lead the class of 2021 Old Warriors BY JOANN GUIDRY Racing luck is a real thing and good racehorses are tough to come by. And good racehorses who have successful longevity are the thoroughbred version of unicorns. But they do exist as evidenced by The Florida Horse magazine’s annual Old Warriors feature. The Florida-breds who earn their Old Warriors badges have to be at least 7-years-old and won at least one black type stakes during the year. In 2021, five Florida-breds met the criteria of being Old Warriors. Leading the parade are Florida-bred graded stakes winning millionaires Extravagant Kid and C Z Rocket, both former claimers. At age 8, Extravagant Kid is the elder statesman of the group and collected his second Old Warriors badge. At age 7, C Z Rocket, Imprimis, Lady’s Island and Anyportinastorm are all newcomers to the elite club. Like Extravagant Kid and C Z Rocket, Imprimis and Lady’s Island were also former claimers who went on to have stakes-winning careers. Another interesting note is that both C Z Rocket and Lady’s Island were also 2020 Florida-bred champions. Also of note, both C Z Rocket and Extravagant Kid competed in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships for the second consecutive year. EXTRAVAGANT KID A versatile world traveler, Extravagant Kid added to his sterling resume by becoming a Group 1 stakes-winning millionaire in 2021. The latter being all the more impressive in that it happened in his 50th start halfway across the world in Dubai. Then after returning to the United States for a brief break, Extravagant Kid added England to his racing passport. To date in his career, Extravagant Kid has raced in the U.S., Canada, United Arab Emirates and Great Britain. Bred by Frank Vicino’s Vicino Racing Stable, Extravagant Kid began his 2021 season with a trio of runner-up finishes. He was second to fellow Old Warrior Imprimis in the $75,000 Janus Stakes on the turf on Jan. 1 at Gulfstream Park; second to Florida-bred Cajun Brother in the Sunshine Sprint Stakes on the dirt on Jan. 16 at Gulfstream Park; and second to Just Might in the Colonel Power Stakes on Feb. 13 at Fair Grounds despite being bumped at the start. Originally on the turf, the Colonel Power was switched to the main dirt track because of inclement weather. Extravagant Kid became a millionaire with his runner-up finish in the Colonel Power Stakes. Extravagant Kid, owned by David Ross’s DARRS Inc., and trained by Brendan Walsh, was then flown to the UAE for the Dubai World Cup. Specifically, Extravagant Kid was entered in the Al Quoz Sprint (Group 1) on March 27 at Meydan Racecourse. The 1,200-meter turf test (about six furlongs) featured a 13-horse international field of 3-year-olds and older runners and was run on a straightaway course. Breaking well, Extravagant Kid was taken to the inside group by jockey Ryan Moore with Equilateral and Man of Promise taking the early lead in the grandstand group. With 300 meters to the finish, Ex30

travagant Kid began making up ground and proved to be the best by half a length. Final Song (Ire) was second with Acklam Express (Ire) third. Winning time on the firm turf was 1:09.26. Sent back to the U.S., Extravagant Kid’s next start would come three months later in the King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1) at Royal Ascot on June 15. There he finished third to Oxted (GB) in the five-furlong turf test. While still in England, Extravagant Kid perhaps showed he was a bit homesick with a 14th-place finish in the Darley July Cup (Group 1) at Newmarket on July 10. After returning to the U.S. and given a much-deserved break, Extravagant Kid re-emerged in the Woodford Stakes (G2) on Oct. 9 at Keeneland. He finished second to Florida-bred Golden Pal in the fiveand-a-half-furlong turf test. Extravagant Kid would take on Golden Pal again in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) on Nov. 6 at Del Mar. Extravagant Kid finished ninth while Golden Pal won his second consecutive Breeders’ Cup race after winning the Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) in 2020 at Keeneland. Extravagant Kid collected $10,000 for his ninth-place Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, bringing his seasonal earnings total to $732,523. A 2013 bay gelding by Kiss the Kid out of Pretty Extravagant, by With Distinction, Extravagant Kid was raced by Frank Vicino for his first 23 starts. In January 2018, he was claimed for $75,000 by Brendan Walsh for DARRS Inc. and since then Extravagant Kid has won at least one stakes race every year. To date, he has made 54 starts with 15 wins, 17 seconds and seven thirds to bank career earnings of $1,684,733.

C Z ROCKET The saga of C Z Rocket, a record-setting Ocala Breeders’ Sales juvenile who became a claimer then a graded stakes-winning Florida-bred champion, continued to add new chapters in 2021. Not only did C Z Rocket continue his stakes-winning ways, he also became a millionaire. C Z Rocket sped into the season with back-to-back impressive wins over rival Whitmore at the latter’s hometrack at Oaklawn Park. Whitmore had won the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) with C Z Rocket finishing second and fellow Florida-bred Firenze Fire third in November at Keeneland, earning Whitmore the 2020 Eclipse Award as champion male sprinter. But 2021 was a chance for revenge for C Z Rocket. The duo would face off first in the $200,000 Hot Springs on March 13 at Oaklawn Park, a race Whitmore had won four consecutive times. But C Z Rocket would deny his rival a fifth straight win as he ran down Whitmore in the deep stretch to win by a neck. Fractions for the six-furlong sprint were :21.65, :44.69, :56.94 with C Z Rocket stopping the clock in 1:09.04. With the win, C Z Rocket also became a millionaire. A month later, the rivals met again in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park. This time around, C Z Rocket made a bold move three-wide on the far turn to take the lead in the early stretch. He held off a rallying Whitmore to win by two lengths in 1:09.62 for the six furlongs. Following those two season-opening victories, C Z Rocket then posted a string of second and third-place finishes. He was second to Mo Mosa in the Steve Sexton Mile (G3) on May 31 at Lone Star Park; third to Dr. Schivel in the Bing Crosby (G1) on July 31 at Del Mar; second to Ginobill in the Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2) on Aug. 28 at Del Mar; and third to Dr. Schivel in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2) on Oct. 2 at Santa Anita. C Z Rocket’s season ended with a disappointing seventh to Aloha West in the Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) on Nov. 6 at Del Mar. Earning $20,000 for that finish, C Z Rocket padded his seasonal bankroll to $620,000. Owned by Altamira Racing Stable, Madaket Stables LLC, Gary Barber and Tom Kagele, the Peter Miller-trained C Z Rocket posted two wins, two seconds and two thirds in seven starts on the season. Bred by Vicente Perez’s Farm III Enterprises LLC, C Z Rocket is a 2014 bay gelding by City Zip out of graded stakes-placed Successful Sarah, by Successful Appeal. Consigned by Stephen Thoroughbreds to the 2016 OBS June juvenile sale, C Z Rocket was bought for a then record $800,000 by Frank Fletcher Racing Operations. After winning the 2018 Kelly’s Landing Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs, he then posted no wins in 2019 and began 2020 racing in the claiming ranks. On April 30 at Oaklawn Park, trainer Peter Miller claimed fifth-placed C Z Rocket for $40,000 on behalf of Tom Kagele. C Z Rocket would end 2020 as a multiple graded stakes winner and Florida-bred dual champion. He was named the 2020 Florida-bred champion older male and champion male sprinter. To date, C Z Rocket has career earnings of $1,511,641. Continued on next page

IMPRIMIS Another former claimer who then became a graded stakes winner, turf specialist Imprimis opened the 2021 season in winning fashion. On Jan. 1 at Gulfstream Park, Imprimis scored a neck victory over fellow Florida-bred Old Warrior Extravagant Kid in the $75,000 listed Janus. His winning time for the five-furlong turf test was :54.82. To that win, Imprimis would add a second to The Critical Way in the $100,000 Turf Dash on Feb. 24 at Tampa Bay Downs. That was followed by a second, a nose short of winner Bound for Nowhere in the Shakertwon (G2) on April 3 at Keeneland. In five starts on the season, Imprimis posted a win and two seconds to earn $123,535. A 2014 bay gelding by Broken Vow out of Shopper’s Return, by Put It Back, Imprimis was bred by Craig L. Wheeler, who managed Hobeau Farm for more than 30 years. Imprimis didn’t make his first start until he was four. Racing for Wheeler, Imprimis won at

first asking in a maiden special weight on February 2, 2018, at Gulfstream Park. He then won an allowance optional claiming race on February 28 at Gulfstream Park. Following that win, Wheeler sold Imprimis privately to Breeze Easy LLC (Mike Hall and Sam Ross). Imprimis, trained by Joseph Orseno, rewarded his new owners with another allowance optional claiming win on March 24. But things only got better from there as Imprimis won the 2018 Jim McKay Turf Sprint Stakes on May 18 at Pimlico. He would add another stakes win on the year, capturing the 2018 Wolf Hill at Monmouth Park. In 2019, Imprimis won his first graded stakes victory with a tally in the 2019 Shakertown (G2) at Keeneland. He also won the $75,000 Silks Run at Gulfstream that season. His second graded stakes win came in the 2020 Runhappy Turf Sprint Stakes (G3). To date, Imprimis has posted nine wins, two seconds and two thirds in 21 starts with career earnings to date of $883,483.

LADY’S ISLAND Going into the 2021 season, Lady’s Island was a former claimer who had become a multiple stakes winner and Florida-bred champion. In what would be her only start on the season, Lady’s Island ended her career in stakes-winning fashion. On Feb. 6 at Gulfstream Park, Lady’s Island captured the $100,000 Ladies’ Turf Sprint. She won the five-furlong sprint had been taken off the turf by three-quarters of a length ahead of fellow Florida-bred Miss Auramet. Her winning time over the sloppy track was :58.87. She earned $61,380 to bring her career earnings to $665,575. Three days later, Lady’s Island was consigned by South Point Sales Agency to the Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale. There she was bought by Gainesway Farm for $310,000. Bred by Bailey Bolen, Lady’s Island is a 2014 bay mare by Solera Farm stallion Greatness out of Broad-

way Martha, by Broad Brush. Racing for Bolen, she won her first race in a $25,000-$20,000 maiden claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs on April 22, 2017. From there, she had modest success in the claiming/ allowance optional claiming ranks for Bolen. Then on June 22, 2018, Lady’s Island was claimed by Richard Averill for $16,000 after finishing third in a $12,500 starter optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park. In 2019, Lady’s Island won the Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3) and listed Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint, both at Gulfstream Park for owners Matties Racing Stable LLC and Averill Racing LLC. In 2020, she again won the Sugar Swirl (G3), $50,000 Minaret and $100,000 Musical Romance. Lady’s Island was named the 2020 Florida-bred champion female sprinter. Lady’s Island’s lone 2021 stakes win at age 7 was her ticket into the Old Warriors club, a fitting end to her outstanding racing career.

ANYPORTINASTORM It was a short 2021 season for Anyportinastorm, who made only four starts but won his second Lost in the Fog Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Anyportinastorm has an affinity for the Lost in the Fog, having won the 2019 edition and finishing third in the 2018 outing. The annual race is named after Florida-bred Lost in the Fog, who earned the 2005 Eclipse Award as champion sprinter. On April 24, 2021, Anyportinastorm was much the best in the $75,000 Lost in the Fog. He won by two-and-a-half lengths with Baja Sur second and Thanks Mr. Edison third. Fractions for the six-furlong sprint were :22.39. :45.27, :57.31 with Anyportinastorm posting a winning time of 1:09.62.

Racing for Peter Redekop B.C. Ltd. and trained by Peter Miller, Anyportinastorm banked $50,450 on the season. In addition to the two victories in the Lost in the Fog Stakes, Anyportinastorm has also won four other stakes and has career earnings to date of $366,375. Bred by Sally J. Andersen, Anyportinastorm is a 2014 bay horse by City Zip out of La Defense, by Wild Again. Consigned by de Meric Sales to the 2016 OBS April juvenile sale, Anyportinastorm was a $320,000 purchase by Alistair Roden Bloodstock. He has raced his entire career for Peter Redekop B.C. Ltd. n

Upcoming Events and Deadlines Florida Sire Stakes 2-year-old payment deadline Jan. 15 is the deadline for FSS 2-year-olds for $250. If missed, the next deadline is Feb. 28 for $500. The yearling payment must have been paid. If the yearling payment was missed, a $5,000 payment can be made by Jan. 15. If all deadlines are missed a May 1 payment of $10,000 is available for an un-raced FSS eligible 2-year-old. Membership Renewals Membership renewals have begun. The dues have increased by $25. The last time dues were increased was 2012. Regular members who are renewing will have an online payment option available at www. ftboa.com. All categories of members will receive a mailed renewal form and also a renewal form via e-mail. Foal Registration deadline Foal registration fees for foals of 2022 have changed. The fees have increased. The last increase was in 1996. Please note the payment schedule and fees as follows: Foal registration by Aug. 31 is $125 for members, $300 for non-members. Foal registration Sept. 1 through Dec. 31 is $200 for members, $500 for non-members. Yearling registration is $400 for members, $800 for non-members. Two-year-old fees range

from $2,500 to $7,500 depending on if the original breeder still owns the horse. Member Communications If you are not receiving the FTBOA Member Update by e-mail or text messages reminding you of deadlines, please call the office so we can check your information and troubleshoot in the event your computer system is not allowing our communications to get through.
