Commissioner Wilton Simpson a Champion for Florida Thoroughbreds

Leaders within Florida’s Thoroughbred industry are proud to call Wilton Simpson, Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, their friend and champion.

Commissioner Simpson, a major advocate of the Florida Thoroughbreds, has galvanized long-run industry strength through unflinching leadership. To fully appreciate Commissioner Simpson’s impacts, we look back on his civil service years prior to election into Florida’s top agricultural post.

As a member of the Florida Senate and the Presiding Officer of the Florida Senate from 2020-2022, Commissioner Simpson led the charge for policies sustaining Florida’s Thoroughbred breeders and owners. Staring down the barrel of a statewide “decoupling” assault, steadfast Simpson did not blink. He beat back what would have otherwise been cataclysmic to the Florida Thoroughbred industry.

“Commissioner Simpson has been a true champion for breeders and owners. We are grateful for his leadership and commitment, even in the most challenging of circumstances” said FTBOA Executive Director Lonny Powell.

As Commissioner, Simpson’s steady charge has included:

• Direct investment into industry marketing and promotion;

• Administrating $55 million of breeding and racing incentives over the next two fiscal years;

• Fully funding implementation of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) in Florida, forestalling purse account raids in the process.

FTBOA President George Isaacs credits Simpson with sustaining Florida as a top producer of Thoroughbreds and its three-quarters national share of the 2-year-old Thoroughbreds auction market.

“Championship results ensure Florida horses and horsemen compete with all contenders and back down to no one. Wilton Simpson, our Tallahassee champion, helps hold that high ground for us.”

Simpson said he remains enthusiastic about the world renowned Florida Thoroughbred industry and the economic contributions it provides Florida.

“As Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, I am proud to champion the interests of the Thoroughbred community and help foster an environment that encourages its continued growth,” Commissioner Simpson said. “By leveraging our collective strengths, resources and skills, we can continue to showcase the immense potential of our industry on a global stage.” TFH

Foggy Night Takes Delaware Oaks at 14-1

against special weight maidens at Parx in October, winning by 11 ¼ lengths at a mile-and-70-yards. She was then second to Good Sam in the $150,000 Tempted at a mile on Nov. 6 at Aqueduct before finishing sixth in the Grade 2 Demoisel won by Julia Shining over a sloppy nine furlongs at Aqueduct on Dec. 3.

She started 2023 with a second to Talk to the Judge in a non-winners of two, $40,000 optional claiming on April 25 before winning by six lengths under those same conditions on June 5, both at Parx.

Foggy Night returned $30.40 to win.

It was the third career win for Foggy Night, who also has four seconds in eight starts, and the $201,810 first prize increased her bankroll to $278,550.

Out of Settling Seas, by Stormy Atlantic, Foggy Night was bred by Brent and Crystal Fernung. The Fernungs sold her from their Journeyman Bloodstock Services consignment for $20,000 to Pine Brook Farm at last year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale.

In her first career stakes victory, Pine Book Farm’s Foggy Night upset the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks at odds of 14-1 in the $300,000 test for 3-year-old fillies at Delaware Park on July 1. Ridden by Paco Lopez, Foggy Night raced in third down the backstretch, about three-and-a-half lengths behind Opus Forty Two and 5-2 second choice Miracle before closing the gap on the two leaders with two furlongs to the finish. Foggy Night drew even with the leaders while passing the furlong marker and raced clear to win by a length-and-three-quarters.

The Florida-bred daughter of Journeyman Stud’s leading Florida sire Khozan covered the mile-and-a-sixteenth in 1:45.87 while defeating Opus Forty Two, who was a nose faster than Miracle in third. Fireline was fourth with odds-on favorite Cover the Spread fifth. Florida-bred Balpool, Fast Tracked and Cats Inthe Timber completed the order of finish.

Crypto Mama and Promiseher America were scratched.

“[Foggy Night] showed [talent] as a 2-year-old and the key is she can run a long way,” trainer Robert Reid Jr. said. “We gave her a nice freshening over the winter. She got a little stale toward the end of the year, so we gave her a nice freshening and measured her right up to this race. After the layoff, we got a couple of nice seven-eighth races in her and this was her first time going a mile-and-asixteenth. It worked out.”

Foggy Night showcased her talent in her second start

Foggy Night is the first stakes winner for Settling Seas, who has five winners from seven starters and eight foals. She has an unraced 2-year-old colt, Show Boat, who is a full brother to Foggy Night. n

Lightening Larry Wins Second Straight Stakes with Alapocas Run Victory

Lea Farm’s LLC’s Lightening Larry split horses with a quarter mile left and wore down frontrunner Sir Wellington with a determined stretch run to win the $100,000 Alapocas Run by a length-and-a-half at Delaware Park on July 1. The victory in the

six-furlong Alapocas Run, against five other 3-year-olds and older, was the second straight stakes triumph for the 4-year-old son of Uncaptured. He won the $102,000 Mr. Prospector at Monmouth Park on May 29, also at six furlongs.

Trained by Jorge Delgado, Lightening Larry went off as the 3-5 favorite and lived up to expectations with Paco Lopez aboard while completing the distance in 1:10.13 on the fast track. Sir Wellington was second with Chief Ron another two-and-threequarter lengths farther back in third. They were followed by Beren, No Sabe Nada and Florida-bred veteran Drafted.

Run Classic, Stage Left and Twisted Ride were scratched.

“He is a really nice horse,” Lopez said. “He broke really well today and we got into good position. When I asked him at the eighth pole, he responded and finished strong.”

Lightening Larry paid $3.20 to win.

The Alapocas Run was the fifth career stakes victory for Lightening Larry, who won the $100,000 Limehouse at Gulfstream and the Grade 3 Chick Lang at Pimlico last year. He started 2023 with a victory in the $75,000 Sunshine Sprint going six furlongs on Jan. 14 at Gulfstream. He was also second to Magical Warrior in the NYRABets Sprint against Florida-breds on Florida Cup day at Tampa Bay Downs in March and third in the $125,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint won by Candy Man Rocket on Feb. 25.

Lightening Larry is out of Moon and Sun, by Malibu Moon and was bred by Michelle Redding. He has now won seven of 17 career starts with five seconds and two thirds and the $60,000 first-place check increased his lifetime earnings to $517,080.

Moon and Sun has three winners from five starters and seven foals with Lightening Larry as her only black-type performer. She has an unnamed 3-year-old filly by Ocala Stud stallion The Big Beast and an unraced 2-year-old colt, Savage Dragon, by Enticed.

Lightening Larry was purchased by Lea Farms for $50,000 at the 2021 Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale where he was consigned by Pick View. n

Dean Delivers Darts to Victory in Grade 3 Smile Sprint

Earns $25,000 FTBOA Florida-bred Win Bonus

A winner of his first career stakes last time against Florida-breds in the $65,000 Big Drama on May 20, Stonehedge LLC homebred Dean Delivers repeated that performance with a twoand-a-quarter-length victory in the Grade 3 Smile Sprint at Gulfstream Park on July 1. Eight 3-year-olds and older went six furlongs in the Smile Sprint for a purse of $100,000. In addition to

the $58,200 first-place check, Dean Delivers earned a $25,000 Florida-bred win bonus presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association for an $83,200 payday. He also earned a credit of $30,000 toward entry fees in the Grade 1 Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint to be run at Santa Anita on Nov. 4. Ridden for the second consecutive time by Emisael Jaramillo, Dean Delivers was a step slow from post one but sprinted to the front in the first eighth of a mile. He cruised to a two-length advantage on Todo Fino (Chi) in second down the backstretch and was never threatened as he finished in a final time of 1:09.28 on the fast track.

Big and Classy made a late run to complete the Florida-bred exacta while a length-and-a-half in front of Todo Fino in third. Florida-bred Starship Renegade was fourth followed by Doc Amster, Florida-bred and defending Smile champion Willy Boi, Figureti (Chi) and Spankster.

“Today, he drew the one hole, and we figured if he broke good and clean and the rail was open, why not go? It was totally up to Jaramillo as to what to do,” trainer Michael Yates said.

Sent to the post as the 6-5 favorite, Dean Delivers paid $4.40 to win.

While the Big Drama and Smile provide Dean Delivers with his first two added-money triumphs, the 4-year-old chestnut has been

close against some the best sprinters in Florida throughout his career going back to his second-place finish to stablemate Cajun’s Magic in the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager in his second career start in 2021. The following year, he was second three times in stakes, including to My Prankster in the Grade 3 Claiborne Farm Swale, to Sibelius in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector and behind Clapton in the $150,000 Gil Campbell Memorial Handicap, all at Gulfstream. Earlier this year he was third in the Grade 3 Fred W. Hooper presented by Whispering Angel won by Endorsed, and second to Weyburn in the $150,000 Sir Shackleton.

Dean Delivers won for the fifth time in his career with seven seconds and a third in 16 starts while earning $431,060. This was the second FTBOA bonus this year for Dean Delivers, who has already earned a $25,000 Florida Sire Stakes incentive for winning the Big Drama.

time Florida breeding program of the late Gil Campbell and his wife Marilyn. Slick and True has also produced graded stakesplaced Zimba Warrior, by Journeyman Stud stallion Khozan, an unraced 2-year-old, Hayahlookatme, by Khozan, and an unnamed yearling filly by Gentlemen’s Bet. She was bred to Lone Sailor in 2022. She has five winners from six starters and nine foals.

While still four months away from the Breeders’ Cup, Yates said he, owner Marilyn Campbell and farm manager Larry King will consider going to Southern California for the $2 million Sprint set for six furlongs.

“It’s not out of the question. It will be a group decision. We’ll enjoy this,” he said.

Five Florida-breds have won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint including Eillo in 1984, Precisionist (1985), Smile (1986), Cherokee Run (1994) and Big Drama (2010). There have been 86 Florida-breds contest the Sprint with the last being C Z Rocket, who was second to Elite Power in 2022, second to Whitmore in 2020 and seventh in the 2021 Sprint won by Aloha West. n

Reaper Tenacious in Winning Prairie Gold Juvenile

but obviously I was very happy with him fighting back like that.

“To go all the way up to Iowa to run a race is not something I had envisioned. But with the [FTBOA Florida] Sire Stakes now moved back, it gives one of these early winners a shot at another race around the country and gives them some more experience.”

It was the third career start for Reaper, who finished ninth of 10 after being bumped at the start of the $100,000 Royal Palm Juvenile won by No Nay Mets (Ire) at five furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream Park on May 13. The Juan Alvarado trainee broke his maiden by nearly six lengths while leading from start to finish in a four-and-a-half furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream on April 21.

“He won his first race after getting out there by himself and then we ran him on the turf just because it was at home. But he really didn’t have much experience,” Cohen continued. “But honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I was hoping he came through and would show his class.”

Arindel homebred Reaper produced a courageous effort on July 8 at Prairie Meadows when the 2-year-old Florida-bred battled back for a neck victory ahead of Dialed in to Win in the $105,550 Prairie Gold Juvenile. The Prairie Gold Juvenile featured a field of six 2-year-olds who went fiveand-a-half furlongs and gave Reaper his first career stakes victory.

Breaking from post three with jockey Cristian Torres, Reaper had to fight through a four-horse battle for the lead down the backstretch with local maiden special weight-winners Dialed in to Win, U Can Do U and Surprise Road Trip while finishing the first quarter mile in :22.36. Surprise Road Trip could not keep up heading into turn and U Can Do U surrendered before they hit the top of the stretch leaving Reaper and Dialed in to Win to fight it out to the wire.

Dialed in to Win stuck a neck in front with a furlong to the finish before Reaper found more on the inside, passing his rival in the final 50 yards and win in 1:05.71 on the fast track. Dialed in to Win finished two-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of a late-running Sincerely Mine in third with Mc Cougar fourth. U Can Do U finished fifth with Surprise Road Trip last.

As the 3-5 favorite, Reaper paid $3.40 to win.

“[Reaper] was in between horses there and [Dialed in to Win] had a good spot on the outside and I knew [Reaper] was a game horse who has done everything we asked him to do,” Arindel’s Brian Cohen said. “He ran a little green with his ears flipping around

Arindel purchased Horah for Bailey for $150,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November Sale while in foal to Distorted Humor.

A bay colt, Reaper is eligible for the $1.2 million Florida Sire Stakes series that begins Sept. 9 with the $100,000 Dr. Fager and the $100,000 Desert Vixen for fillies, both at six furlongs. n

Me and Mr. C Gets Up to Win Jonathan B. Schuster in Last Jump

Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher’s Me and Mr. C stuck a nose in front of frontrunner Underdressed in the final jump to win the $102,975 Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial at Horseshoe Indianapolis on July 8. The Jonathan B. Schuster saw a field of 10 4-year-olds and older go a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the turf.

the lead through slow quarter-mile splits of :24.08, :49.53 and 1:14.19. Underdressed continued to have a clear lead on his rivals turning for home as Me and Mr. C still had three lengths to make up after navigating through traffic while three-wide around the turn. Underdressed was still a length-and-a-half in front of longshot Gallant Guy in second with an eighth-of-a-mile to the finish when Me and Mr. C began to make up ground on the outside. Me and Mr. C surged past Underdressed in the final jump to win the photo in 1:44.39 on the good turf.

Underdressed was a length-and-a-half in front of third-place finisher Verstappen with Strong Tide, Gentle Soul, Maasal Warrior, In Love (Brz), Gallant Guy, McLovin and Kentucky Ghost completing the order of finish.

It was the second consecutive victory for Me and Mr. C after winning the $90,000 Soldier’s Dancer going a mile-and-70-yards on the Gulfstream Park synthetic on June 11.

Despite winning his previous race, the Michael Maker-trained Me and Mr. C returned $21.60 to win at odds of 9-1.

Bred by Stonehedge LLC, Me and Mr. C is by Journeyman Stud’s leading Florida sire Khozan out of Abiding, by Dynaformer and improved his record to nine wins, six seconds and five thirds in 33 career starts with earnings of $457,619. The 6-year-old gelding is a graduate of the 2019 OBS March Sale where he was a $50,000 RNA from the consignment of Paul Sharp.

Abiding also produced multiple stakes-winner Abiding Star, by Uncle Mo, a winner of $700,565. From six foals, all have started of which five are winners. The late Gilbert Campbell purchased the unraced Abiding for his Stonehedge breeding operation while she was in foal to Hard Spun for $85,000 out of the 2010 Keeneland November Sale. n

Beauty of the Sea is First Stakes Winner for Bucchero with Blue Sparkler Score

Florida-bred Beauty of the Sea became the first stakes-winner for Bucchero, who stands in Florida at Pleasant Acres Stallions, as the 3-year-old filly won the $104,000 Blue Sparkler over five-anda-half furlongs on the turf at Monmouth Park July 15.

Let go at odds of 13-1 in the field of eight sophomore fillies, Beauty of the Sea provided more than a big payday for owner Harlan Malter, who races in the name of Ironhorse Racing Stable LLC, as he is also the managing partner for Bucchero.

After breaking from post two, Beauty of the Sea and jockey Jairo Rendon raced on the rail in fourth, about three lengths behind Bosserati, who had sprinted to a clear advantage down the backstretch while finishing the first quarter mile in :21.51. Bosserati continued to have a length-and-a-half advantage turning for home before Beauty of the Sea chased her down in the stretch to win in 1:02.68 on the firm turf and finish a head faster than a late running My Sweet Affair in second. Love Appeals was third followed by 5-2 favorite Plentitude in fourth. Bosserati, Florida-bred Dream Concert, Talk to the Judge and Lady Irvine completed the order of finish.

“I saw her races at Gulfstream and it seemed like she liked being just off the speed and she quickens at the end,” Rendon said. “When [Bosserati] went out for the lead, it gave us a target. [Beauty of the Sea] has class and she has a big heart. I just wanted to sit behind the speed and let her get her feet. I was a little worried when I went outside with her because I knew the others were coming. But we got there. She made it.”

Beauty of the Sea took her third consecutive race in the Blue Sparkler after winning against $50,000 maiden claimers going five furlongs on the turf in her third career start on May 5 at Gulfstream Park. She then defeated first level, $20,000 optional claiming fillies bred in Florida by two lengths at five-and-a-half furlongs on the synthetic course on June 3, also at Gulfstream.

The victory gave trainer Joe Orseno his 1,994th career win and affirmed the potential talent he had suspected earlier in Beauty of the Sea.

“After she broke her maiden so convincingly and easily—and I had another filly in the race that she beat easily—I thought ‘okay, she’s got some talent. Now we have to see how much,’” Orseno said. “She handled that [first level optional claimer] easily in her next start, and when she did that, there were a couple of older horses in there. I thought if we kept her with 3-year-olds we would have a chance in a stakes race.

“I did not expect this race to come up as tough as it did.”

Beauty of the Sea paid $28.20 to win.

Out of the unraced Poseidon’s Warrior mare Belong to Sea, Beauty of the Sea was bred by Shade Tree Thoroughbreds Inc. She was a $29,000 RNA out of the Omar Ramirez Bloodstock consignment at the 2022 OBS June Sale but has now earned $118,960 from three wins in five starts with one second.

Beauty of the Sea is the first foal produced by Belong to Sea, who also has a unraced 2-year-old colt, Little Starships, by Gone Astray. Both Gone Astray and Neolithic also stand at Pleasant Acres Stallions. n

Uncashed Uncorks Another Explosive Victory in Quick Call

Florida-bred Uncashed burst from the starting gate and instantly sprinted to the lead on his way to an impressive five-anda-half-length victory in the $175,000 Quick Call presented by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at Saratoga on July 17. The Larry Rivelli trainee remained undefeated in four starts this year and is five-for-six lifetime after defeating five other 3-year-olds over five-and-a-half furlongs on the main track.

In becoming the fifth Florida-bred winner of the Quick Call and second in three years after Golden Pal’s victory in 2021, Uncashed was undeterred after the race was moved off the turf and reduced by six scratches. Originally a Grade 3, the Quick Call was downgraded to listed status with the move to the main track.

In addition to Uncashed and Golden Pal, the list of Florida-bred winners of the Quick Call includes acclaimed sprinters Pure Sensation (2014), Holding Gold (2016) and World of Trouble (2018).

Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., who also rode Golden Pal and World of Trouble in their Quick Call triumphs, Uncashed was a half-length clear of Acoustic Ave after a quarter mile in :22.28 and three-anda-half lengths ahead of Joey Freshwater after a half-mile in :45.43. He finished up in 1.03.44 on the sloppy and sealed track with

Uncashed paid $4.40 to win as the 6-5 favorite.

“The race didn’t fall apart as much as I thought it would [after scratches],” Rivelli said. “It was time for him to get battle tested and this was obviously a step up from the venues he ran at before. But I wouldn’t have taken him there if I didn’t think he could do it. I’m really happy with his performance.”

Owned by Patricia’s Hope LLC, Uncashed won two allowance sprints at Hawthorne in April and May to start the year before winning the $50,000 Golden Circle over six furlongs at Prairie Meadows on May 20. He began his career winning a six-furlong maiden special weight by 11 lengths at Louisiana Downs in September before suffering his only defeat when second to Hand Pay in a first level, $62,500 optional claiming at Hawthorne on Oct. 21.

“He’s a big, long, rangy horse and just covers ground so easily,” Rivelli said. “He has a really high-cruising speed and we’ve never really got to the bottom of him in any of his races since we laid him off and brought him back. Today was the day we were going to have to throw it down and I do believe there has to be a little left in the tank. He had to run today to win and he did.”

Ortiz praised Uncashed for the quick start and his ability to maintain a high speed throughout the race.

“He broke out of there and made the lead on his own,” Ortiz said. “I didn’t have to use him too much. He doesn’t know how to slow down. He was going comfortable. He was going a little bit quick, but at the same time, he was relaxed and waiting for me.

“Going to the quarter pole, I felt them coming but he put his ears up and I knew he was going to be there. I watched a couple of replays. Larry told me to trust him and that he’s a nice horse and that’s what I did. After I made the lead, I just waited for the time to go. When they made their move, I asked him and it took him maybe a few strides. But he started running when he hit the three-sixteenths pole and I said, ‘Alright he’s home.’”

Uncashed is out of Charlie B, by War Chant and was bred by Nicksar Farm. He is the third foal out of Charlie B, her second winner and first stakes winner from three starters. Charlie B has an unraced 2-year-old filly, Cool Tricks, by Practical Joke, who sold for $30,000 to Rohan Crichton at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale in April from the Envision Equine consignment. Charlie B has a yearling filly, Miss Zelenskyy, by West Coast and a weanling filly, My Raquel, by Connect. n

Four Florida-bred Winners at Saratoga on July 16

Florida breeders were well represented at Saratoga Race Course on July 16 with four winners on the day’s 10-race card.

In addition to Uncashed in the featured Quick Call, the day started with a Florida-bred Daily Double as Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher’s Giroovin won the first race, a $20,000 claiming, with Manny Franco aboard. By Girvin, the Mike Maker trainee was bred by Bella Inizio Farm LLC.

Trainer Linda Rice won the second race, a $25,000 claiming for fillies and mares, with Jolly Miss Jill. Ridden by Jose Ortiz, the daughter of Handsome Mike won for owner Winning Move Stable. The 3-year-old filly was bred by Stonehedge LLC.

Ensign Parker, who is owned and trained by Natalia Lynch, won the fourth race, a $14,000 claiming for 3-year-olds and older, with Dylan Davis aboard. Ensign Parker is by Soldat and was bred by Richard Dunn. n

Mohawk Trail Wins Second Straight Woodbine Stakes in the Ontario Colleen

Mohawk Trail had three horses beat with a quarter-mile to the finish but negotiated through traffic in the stretch to run down 6-5 favorite Queen Picasso (GB) and upset the Grade 3 Ontario Collen by a length-and-a-half at Woodbine on July 22. Queen Picasso was three lengths clear inside the final furlong and a length-and-a-half in front while passing the sixteenth pole but could not hold off the Florida-bred Mohawk Trail and jockey Adam Beschizza, who finished the mile on the firm turf in 1:34.68.

Queen Picasso was second, a head faster than third-place finisher Love to Shop. Ryder Ryder Ryder, Last Call, Blind Spot, Preliminary, Violet Gibson (Ire) and Born to Boogie completed the order of finish.

The triumph against seven other 3-year-old fillies was the second straight stakes victory at Woodbine for Mohawk Trail after winning the CA$100,000 Alywow going six-and-a-half furlongs on the grass on June 25.

The daughter of Pioneerof the Nile won the CA$150,000 Ontario Colleen for owner NBS Stable and trainer Kelsey Danner to increase her career earnings to $204,897 from four wins in nine starts. She was also second in the $150,000 Horseshoe Indianapolis Handicap going a mile on the grass on May 17 and third in the $103,000 Sanibel Island over six-and-a-half furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream on April 1.

Beschizza, who was aboard for both Woodbine victories, said he and Danner had discussed how the Ontario Colleen created two hurdles for Mohawk Trail with the additional distance against better competition.

“I had a discussion with Kelsey [Danner], and she [asked], ‘Do we stay where we are or do we stretch her out a little bit?’ And the discussion was to go, obviously, a mile,” Beschizza said. “[Mohawk Trail is] starting to mature a lot more. She has a great will to win which stacks up in her favor. So that’s half the battle with these horses.

“When she had a target in front of her there the last eighth-ofa-mile, she dug deep. Like I said, she is definitely maturing in the right direction. Good on Kelsey. She’s done a great job with her and congrats to NBS as well.”

Let go at odds of 11-1 in the Ontario Colleen, Mohawk Trail paid $25.60 to win.

Mohawk Trail is out of the stakes-placed mare Iroquois Girl, by Indian Charlie and was bred by Alfonso and Nora Figliolia’s Westbury Stables LLC located in Reddick, Fla. Mohawk Trail sold for $180,000 to John Ballantyne and NBS Stable at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale where she was consigned by Four Star Sales.

Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield purchased Iroquois Girl for Alfonso Figliolia at the 2015 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale where she was consigned by Denali Stud, paying $160,000. A month later, she finished third in the Lightning City at Tampa Bay Downs in the final start of her career.

Mohawk Trail is the second foal and only winner for Iroquois Girl. She has an unraced 2-year-old colt, Justify Charlie, by Justify, who was bought back by Carl Deville for $27,000 at the Texas Thoroughbred Association April Sale. n

Loyalty Cuts the Corner to Win Grade 3 Hendrie

Florida-bred Loyalty raced in fourth, a length-and-a-half behind the frontrunning Clitheroe (GB) with a half-mile to run before using a ground-saving trip in the turn and takes the lead in the final furlong to win the Grade 3 Hendrie by two-and-a-half lengths at Woodbine on July 22. Ridden by Kazushi Kimura for trainer Jose Carroll, Loyalty finished the six-and-a-half furlongs on the synthetic main track in 1:15.61.

out of a winning effort in May of 2021, Sassy Beast led from start to finish through fractions of :21.89 and :44.85 with jockey David Caruso to win by three-quarters of a length.

Can’t Buy Love was second, two lengths in front of 6-5 favorite Train to Artemus in third. Florida-bred Talkin Tipsy was fourth followed, in order, by Lemos Cunha, Rambert, Moor Strength, Florida-bred Fulminate, Kotyle, Repassado and Florida-bred Trevess. Get the Candy was scratched.

Sassy Beast paid $30.80 to win while finishing five-and-a-half furlongs on the firm outer turf in 1:02.65.

Sassy Beast was third three times in stakes including in the $100,000 FTBOA City of Ocala Florida Sire Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in December when making her first start under the ownership of Rodriguez. She was then third in both the $75,000 Orleans at Delta Downs on Jan. 6 and in the $100,000 Lightning City at Tampa Bay on Feb. 18 before finishing second in the $60,000 Spotted Horse at Evangeline on April 7. The well-traveled mare then won an optional claiming $20,000 starter allowance at Gulfstream in April and a $30,000 optional claiming at Evangeline in May before two more third-place finishes at Gulfstream and Mountaineer Casino Racetrack in June just prior to the Andy Guest.

“I rode [Sassy Beast] at Evangeline a few starts ago and she was good,” Cardoso said. “But today she showed me everything she is capable of doing. She is a different horse on the turf. When I asked her for something, she gave me everything she had.”

Sassy Beast improved her record to eight wins in 19 career starts with two seconds and seven thirds with earnings of $277,110. She is by Ocala Stud stallion The Big Beast out of the stakes-place mare I’mclassyandsassy, by Master Command and was bred in Florida by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong.

“I would say that she was the best in the field,” Kimura said. “She’s quite easy to ride. She was able to stay close and also if there’s space, she’s able to go in the lead. There were so many options for me. She was feeling comfortable, so comfortable behind the frontrunner. She was able to take a step outside and find a hole and just showed me an amazing race. It was perfect.”

Having won three of her last four races including the $100,000 Lady Erie at Presque Isle Downs in August, the CA$125,000 Duchess at Woodbine in October and an CA$80,000 optional claiming at Woodbine on June 25, Loyalty was the 6-5 favorite in the Hendrie and paid $4.30 to win.

Loyalty is owned by Antony Beck’s Gainesway Stable and LNJ Foxwoods and increased her career earnings to $296,572 from six wins and a third in eight starts.

The dark bay filly is by Hard Spun out of the unraced Elusive Quality mare Slew’s Quality and was bred in Florida by Best A Luck Farm LLC and Godolphin LLC. Solis/Litt purchased Loyalty for $270,000 out of the Gainesway consignment at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Charlie’s Wish Gets First Stakes Victory in Azalea

Florida-bred Charlie’s Wish earned her first stakes victory on July 22 at Gulfstream Park with a four-and-three-quarter-length triumph in the $75,000 Azalea. The daughter of Double Diamond Farm stallion First Dude defeated six other 3-year-old fillies going seven furlongs in the Aza-

lea while also earning a $25,000 Florida-bred win bonus presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association.

Previously this year, Charlie’s Wish was second in the $100,000 Game Face last out on June 17 and second in the $50,000 Gasparilla at Tampa Bay Down in January.

Trained by David Fawkes for owner Royalight Racing LLC, Charlie’s Wish and jockey Leonel Reyes raced in fifth down the backstretch as Trust Me led the way through a :23.48 first quarter mile. Charlie’s Wish circled rivals while four-wide in the turn to take a short lead from Trust Me and Flakes to her inside at the top of the stretch. Charlie’s Wish drew clear in the run for home to finish in 1:14.01 on the fast track.

Lightening Larry Wins Third Straight Stakes in Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash

Lea Farms LLC’s Florida-bred Lightening Larry took the $148,500 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash on July 29 at Laurel Park, winning his third consecutive stakes at three different tracks. Ridden by Daniel Centeno for trainer Jorge Delgado, Lightening Larry covered six furlongs in 1:09.29 on the fast track in defeating four other 3-year-olds and older.

Wondrwherecraigis and jockey Sheldon Russell set the pace with a length advantage on Sir Wellington in second and Lightening Larry another half-length back in third on the outside through a quarter mile in :21.84. Wondrwherecraigis took a length-and-ahalf lead into the stretch but Lightening Larry chased him down inside the sixteenth pole for the half-length victory.

Wondrwherecraigis, who finished second in the Frank J. De Francis for the third consecutive year, finished four-and-a-half lengths clear of Holy Synchronicity in the show spot with Sir Wellington and Threes Over Deuces completing the order of finish.

Ladneedsahandler and Synthesis were scratched.

“He ran big,” Centeno said of Lightening Larry. “Jorge [Delgado] called me this morning and said just to try to be close to the lead. He didn’t have to be on the lead, but he can be really close. We knew there was speed inside and we had the outside position so that was perfect for us. It set up perfect. I know the track was fast today and speed was holding a lot. And I know [Wondrwherecraigis] is strong, so I moved a little early to try to catch him and he fired big to the wire.”

Sent to the post as the odds-on choice at 3-5, Lightening Larry paid $3.40 to win.

Lightening Larry began his winning streak at Monmouth Park on May 29 with a four-and-a-half-length victory in the $102,000 Mr.

Prospector and continued by taking the $100,000 Alapocas Run at Delaware Park by a length-and-a-half on July 1, both at six furlongs. It was the eighth career win, including six stakes, with five seconds and two thirds in 18 starts for Lightening Larry and the $90,000 first-place check increased his lifetime earnings to $607,080. The 4-year-old colt also counts among his victories the Grade 3 Chick Lang at Pimlico and the $100,000 Limehouse at Gulfstream Park in 2022 and the $75,000 Sunshine Sprint at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 14.

Lightening Larry is by Uncaptured out of Moon and Sun, by Malibu Moon and was bred in Florida by Michelle Redding. Lea Farms LLC is the nom de course of Bill Cosgrove of Cleveland, Ohio, who purchased Lightening Larry for $50,000 out of the Pick View consignment at the 2021 Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale. Moon and Sun has produced six starters, of which three are winners, from seven foals. Lightening Larry is her only black-type earner.

Lightening Larry is the second Florida-bred winner of the Frank J. De Francis in three years as Jalen Journey won in 2021. There have been 12 Florida-bred winners of the race going back to Montbrook in 1993. Others include Cherokee Run in 1994, Lite the Fuse (1995-’96), Kelly Kip (1998), Delaware Township (2001), Wildcat Heir (2004), Benny the Bull (2007), Vineyard Haven (2009) and Immortal Eyes (2012). n

David O’Farrell Elected as TOBA Chairman

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association announced Aug. 9 the election of David O’Farrell as chairman of its board of trustees. Also joining O’Farrell on the board to serve three-year terms as new members are Joe Appelbaum, Michael Banahan, Everett Dobson, Mandy Pope and R. Glenn Sikura.

Re-elected to three-year terms were current trustees Shannon Arvin, Jeffrey Bloom, Marette Farrell, Brant Laue, Garrett O’Rourke, and Stephen Screnci.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to lead an organization that deeply cares about the economics and integrity of horse racing on behalf of owners and breeders,” O’Farrell said.

O’Farrell serves as manager for his family’s Ocala Stud, the oldest active Thoroughbred farm in Florida and one of the leading stallion, breeding, and training operations in the country.

Following its annual members meeting, the TOBA board of trustees met to elect officers for the association.

Officers named for 2023-2024 are David O’Farrell, chairman, Everett Dobson, vice-chairman, Dan Metzger, president; Doug Cauthen, secretary; and Garrett O’Rourke, treasurer.

The TOBA board also approved the appointment of Alex Solis II to the American Graded Stakes Committee. The 2023-2024 committee is comprised of TOBA members Everett Dobson (chair), Barbara Banke, Walker Hancock, Brant Laue, David O’Farrell, and Alex Solis II and racing officials Dan Bork (Churchill Downs and Ellis Park) Frank Gabriel (NYRA), Rick Hammerle (Kentucky Downs), Chris Merz (Canterbury Park), and Tora Yamaguchi (Del Mar).

The Florida Horse Wins AHP Awards

Florida Equine Communications’ senior graphic designer Nancy Moffatt, cartoonist Remi Bellocq, contributing editor Tammy A. Gantt and editor-in-chief Brock Sheridan were honored with Equine Media Awards by American Horse Publications during the 2023 AHP ‘Meet at the Mesa’ Conference on Sat., June 24, in Tempe, Ariz.

FEC under its flagship magazine, The Florida Horse, has consistently been awarded for design and content for decades. In 2023, FEC added a multimedia win to the communication company’s prestigious list of accolades.

In the Association equine media editorial design category, Moffatt’s ‘Atomically Explodes’ opening graphic to a feature

story on the racehorse Atomically exploding to the lead in a race was selected for an honorable mention out of 22 entries. The art appeared in the November 2022 issue of The Florida Horse.

Judges noted, “The visuals and typography on the opener depict ‘Atomically explodes.’ Nice execution of layering images. Good placement of type. Background artwork carries to the third page without affecting the readability of the type.”

In the editorial illustration category, Bellocq’s ‘Old WarriorsKnights of the Round Table’ illustration received second out of nine entries. Brock Sheridan, FEC’s Editor-in-Chief, was recognized for his concept for the illustration. The art appeared in the January 2022 issue of The Florida Horse.

The judges commented that the editorial cartoon was the perfect commentary on the story it introduced regarding the status of knighthood achieved by highly successful Thoroughbred racehorses with longevity. Bellocq did a stellar job with this mixedmedia rendering. The rough blending, shading, and smudging of these armor-clad champions and their surroundings put the visual humor over the top. The illustration is a highly successful and narrative rendering.”

In the equine media industry video category, there were 22 entries. Gantt was recognized as executive producer for, ‘The Hope that Comes with the dream of winning the Kentucky Derby,’ video segment. The video debuted at the industry’s annual Gala in April 2022 recognizing the racing career and life of Medina Spirit, named the Florida Horse of the Year. Associate Producer Sean Kaplan of Kaplan Media, voice-over artist Barbara Hooper, and Sheridan were also recognized. It was published on Apr. 28, 2022 and can be viewed at the FTBOA YouTube channel.

The judges noted the music was excellent with a well-balanced mix matched with a studio quality voiceover. The video was praised for nice b-roll selections that supported the story, and for its outstanding edit overall. The video was the first submitted by FEC for consideration.

Since 1976, AHP members have aimed to earn awards for excellence in equine media. Submissions to the 2023 Equine Media Awards totaled 515 entries from 87 AHP members. Finalists represent 26 media industry members, 25 media professional members, and 10 business members who have advanced to the top five in one or more of the 54 classes. All Smiles

If there ever was a well-named racehorse, it was Smile. From breaking his maiden in his very first start, to becoming a millionaire, to earning an Eclipse Award, the speedy Florida-bred brought many smiles to all his connections.

And make no mistake about it, Smile, bred and raced by Frances A. Genter Stable, was all Florida breeding. A 1982 dark bay colt by Florida-bred In Reality out of Florida-bred Sunny Smile, by Boldnesian, Smile was a direct result of Genter’s breeding program.

Genter bred and raced In Reality, a 1964 bay horse by Intentionally out of My Dear Girl, by Rough’n Tumble. And while she didn’t breed My Dear Girl, who was bred by Ocala Stud, Genter raced the filly who became the 1959 North American champion 2-year-old filly. In Reality was a multiple stakes winner of $795,824, who Genter retired to stud at Tartan Farms, where he became one of the Florida breeding industry’s most influential sires.

Sunny Smile, the dam of Smile, was also bred and raced by Genter. She earned $62,589 on the racetrack but made her mark

as a multiple stakes-producing broodmare. Thanks to Smile, her most accomplished offspring, Sunny Smile was named the 1986 Florida Broodmare of the Year.

With his deep Florida roots, Smile was the poster horse for the Florida Stallion Stakes. Established in 1982, the Florida Stallion Stakes was set up to promote and reward breeding to Florida stallions while showcasing the Florida Thoroughbred breeding industry. There are six races in two divisions for Florida-bred 2-year-olds by Florida stallions; both juveniles and stallions must be registered with the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. The open division, which has to date been swept 10 times, consists of the Dr. Fager, Affirmed Stakes and In Reality Stakes. The fillies division, which has to date been swept four times, consists of Desert Vixen Stakes, Susan’s Girl Stakes and My Dear Girl Stakes.

The original FSS was run from 1982-2013 at Calder Race Course. With the closing of Calder, the FSS program moved to Gulfstream Park in 2014 and became known as the Florida Sire Stakes and is now administered by the FTBOA.

In 1984, Frances A. Genter Stable’s homebred Smile became the first horse to sweep the Florida Stallion Stakes on his way to an Eclipse Award-winning career.

MAKING FSS HISTORY

Trained by Frank Gomez, Smile made his first start in a maiden special weight on June 16, 1984, at Calder Race Course. He won by an easy three lengths in 1:00.20 for the five-furlong test. He would not start again until Aug. 4 and his second outing would come in stakes company.

In the second division of the Criterium at Calder, Smile displayed his talent once again, besting Spend a Buck by two-and-a-half lengths. Winning time for the five-and-a-half furlongs was 1:07. Of note, Spend a Buck would go on to win the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby in 1985 and garner that year’s Eclipse Award as champion 3-yearold colt.

Three weeks later, Smile began his history-making sweep of the Florida Stallion Stakes. First up was the second division of the $42,500 Dr. Fager on Aug. 25 where Smile romped to a four-length victory ahead of Water Gate with Foundation Plan third. Winning time for the six furlongs was 1:13.60.

In the $120,000 Affirmed on Sept. 29, Smile was even more impressive. He sped to a seven-length win ahead of Kejinsky with Emergency Call third. The seven furlongs was covered in 1:24.6.

As fate would have it, the last race in the series is the $400,000 In Reality, which is named after Smile’s sire. On Oct. 20, Smile did his father proud, capturing the In Reality by two lengths faster than Emergency Call with Covert Operation third. Winning time for the eight-and-ahalf furlongs was 1:46.

Smile won the three FSS races by a combined 13 lengths in becoming the first horse to sweep the series. He wrapped up his juvenile season undefeated in five starts with earnings of $388,495.

STELLAR SOPHOMORE

After undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both knees following his sweep in the Florida Stallion Stakes, Smile returned for his 3-year-old season with a new trainer in Flint “Scotty” Schulhofer. The latter waited until May 9, 1985, to test his new charge with an allowance race at Calder. Smile passed with flying colors, winning by 10 ¾ lengths. Next up was the listed Carry Back nine days later on May 18 at Calder. Smile responded with another dominating victory, this time by 11 ½ lengths.

Schulhofer shipped his speedy runner to Arlington Park, where he posted a second to Banner Bob in the Grade 2 Sheridan on June 1, the first time Smile had run the mile distance. Two weeks later on June 15, Schulhofer stretched Smile out to nine furlongs in the Grade 1 Arlington Classic. Those who doubted

that a sprinter like Smile could win beyond seven furlongs were silenced. Not only did Smile win, he won by seven-and-a-half lengths in 1:51.20 over a sloppy track.

Three weeks later on July 6 at Arlington Park, Smile was third to Grade 1 Belmont Stakes-winner Creme Fraiche in the Grade 1 American Derby at 10 furlongs. But he bounced back on July 21 to win the Grade 3 Fairmount Park Derby going a mile-and-aneighth by four lengths in track-record time of 1:49.

The end game for Smile’s season was the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 2 at Aqueduct. So he returned to sprint distances in non-stakes company, where he was second in an allowance race at Canterbury Downs and third in an overnight handicap at Belmont Park.

Schulhofer’s cagey plan might have worked to perfection if not for fellow Florida-bred Precisionist. After an opening quarter by Mt. Livermore in :22 flat, Smile took over and posted a :44 4/5 for the half-mile. Precisionist came charging down the stretch on the outside to best Smile by three-quarters of a length in 1:08 2/5, a stakes record for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at the time. The victory would earn Precisionist the 1985 Eclipse Award as champion sprinter.

Smile wrapped up his sophomore season with four wins, including two graded; three seconds, two of which were graded; and two thirds, both graded, in 10 starts with earnings of $530,667. He was named the 1985 Florida-bred champion 3-year-old colt while Precisionist was the Florida-bred Horse of the Year and champion sprinter.

CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

Smile’s 1986 season was an uneven one that somehow ended with an Eclipse Award. He managed two allowance wins and off-the-board finishes in graded stakes before posting a victory in the Listed Canterbury Cup going nine furlongs on July 13. His winning time of 1:48 equaled the track record. And with the win, Smile became a millionaire.

He followed that with a third in the Grade 2 Cornhusker Handicap at nine furlongs at Ak-Sar-Ben on July 26. With the Breeders’ Cup once again being the season’s goal, Schulhofer began dropping the race distance. He saddled his charge to a victory in the Grade 3 Equipoise Mile Handicap on Aug. 30 at Arlington Park. But in the seven-furlong Philadelphia Park Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap on Sept. 27, Smile finished an uncharacteristic sixth. He would not start again until the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita Park.

Smile and Pine Tree Lane broke in tandem until midstretch where Smile took over, pulling away to win by a length-and-a-quarter. His final time for the six furlongs was 1:08 2/5, tying Precisionist’s 1985 Breeders’ Cup Sprint time. Also on the 1986 Breeders’ Cup card, Precisionist finished third in the Grade 1, $3 million Classic won by Skywalker.

On the season, Smile posted five wins, two graded and one graded third in nine starts while banking $704,678. Smile was tabbed as the 1986 Florida-bred champion sprinter while Precisionist was once again the Florida-bred Horse of the Year and champion handicap male. The cherry on the top of Smile’s outstanding season and career was garnering the 1986 Eclipse Award as champion sprinter.

CURTAIN CALL

All things must come to an end and for Smile’s career, it was the 1987 season. He opened the season on Jan. 3 at Calder with a second in the Listed Tropical Park Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap. But then came two fifth-place finishes in the Grade 2 Seminole Handicap at Hialeah Park and Gulfstream Park Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap, respectively. Smile was soon retired after the latter finish.

In 27 starts, Smile posted 14 wins, 10 graded including two Grade 1s, four seconds, three black type, and three thirds, all black type. He banked career earnings of $1,664,027.

With Smile’s retirement came the good news that Genter was going to stand her champion at Tartan Farms, where he would join his sire In Reality. But that excitement was short-lived when only months later came the bad news that Tartan Farms was ceasing breeding operations. Tartan Stables would continue to race its horses through 1988. But its yearlings were sold on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1987 at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Inc. at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington. Broodmares, weanlings and stallion shares were later sold through Fasig-Tipton Kentucky on Nov. 15, 1987.

After the 1988 breeding season, Smile and his sire In Reality were moved to Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Ky. Sadly, 25-year-old In Reality was humanely euthanized due to laminitis on May 8, 1989. Smile remained at Gainesway Farm through the 1993 breeding season before being sold and moving to Texas-based McDermott Ranch.

According to The Jockey Club, Smile sired 277 named foals with 147 winners, including 11 stakes winners. Among his stakes winners were graded stakes winner Goldseeker Bud, who won the 1995 Churchill Downs Handicap (G3), as well as multiple stakes winners Smiling Time and Lavender.

Smile died at 15 on June 4, 1997, from the complications of equine protozoal myeloecephalitis (EPM).

In 1999, the Miami Beach Sprint Handicap at Calder Race Course was renamed the Smile Sprint and has been a Grade 3 since 2003. It was moved to Gulfstream Park in 2014 and fittingly, is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Grade 1 Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Going back to the inception of the Miami Beach Sprint Handicap in 1984 at Calder, Florida-breds have dominated the race, winning the first five editions beginning with I Really Will and continuing with Opening Lad (1985), Jeblar (1986), Princely Lad (1987) and Position Leader (1988). Other Florida-bred winners of the Miami Beach Sprint Handicap include Groomstick (1990), Greg At Bat (1991), My Luck Runs North (1992), Exclusive Praline (1994), Request a Star (1995), Constant Escort (1996) and Heckofaralph (1998).

Since being named the Smile, the race has been dominated by Florida-breds beginning with Forty One Carats in 2000. FTBOA Board of Directors CANDIDATE BIOGRAPHIES

The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association will hold its annual general meeting on Oct. 18 via Zoom. Regular members will receive notice by email with instructions on how to register for the meeting. If you are a regular member and you have not provided the FTBOA with your current email address, please contact the FTBOA immediately.

For 2024, there are five director vacancies on the FTBOA board to be filled for three-year terms running until October 2027. Pursuant to the Association’s bylaws, the current board of directors nominated the following five candidates for these vacancies: 1) Valerie Dailey; 2) Brent Fernung; 3) Milan Kosanovich; 4) Frances Vanlangendonk; and 5) Beckie Cantrell. Each candidate agreed to run and to serve as an FTBOA director.

The FTBOA bylaws also allow a candidate to self-nominate by circulating a petition and obtaining 25 member signatures. No such petition was filed.

As provided in the Association bylaws, because there are only five candidates for five director vacancies, members will not be required to cast ballots and these five candidates will be deemed elected to office upon the presiding officer calling the FTBOA’s annual meeting to order.

Current board members Bobby Jones, Richard Kent and Dr. Fred Yutani end their terms at the start of the annual meeting.

Following is more information about the candidates.

Beckie Cantrell graduated from the University of Florida in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education and she went on to teach school for two years.

She then joined Hugh Dailey at Sun Bank as an agriculture lender trainee. After several years of training and continuing education, Beckie started her own loan portfolio specializing in agriculture and Thoroughbred farm loans, as well as equine lines of credit.

She worked at Sun Bank/SunTrust Bank for four years, then rejoining Dailey at Community Bank and Trust from 1999 to 2006 as she continued her banking career at Gateway Bank until 2011. Cantrell retired from banking to concentrate on her Thoroughbred breeding farm and raise her daughter Reece with her husband Kent Cantrell. Kent is an equine veterinarian and a partner in Ocala Equine Hospital.

Since 1998, the couple has pinhooked weanlings to yearlings and bred a few mares each year. All of their foals are registered Florida-breds and Cantrell is hands-on as the caregiver for each foal. She plans each breeding and foals out the mares.

The couple started in the Thoroughbred industry being partners with two good friends, Beth Bayer and Brett Brinkman, and throughout the years have continued a close relationship with Beth Bayer who occasionally partners with them on horses.

Recently, Cantrell became a licensed realtor with Showcase Properties of Central Florida. Cantrell is an active board member of many youth organizations including the Southeastern Youth Fair and she serves as the president of the Marion County 4-H Foundation.

Top horses the Cantrells have bred include Lindsey’s Wish, Wildcat Wish, Evolution Rocks and Violent Turbulence.

Valerie Dailey has a long history serving both the agricultural and business markets throughout Central Florida. With a B.S. in Food and Resource Economics and a Masters in Agricultural Operations Management, both from UF, Dailey’s robust knowledge has contributed to a career centered around her love for the area and the area’s vibrant equestrian industry.

Dailey has been a Florida licensed REALTOR® since 2005 and the Owner/Broker of the Ocalabased real estate brokerage Showcase Properties of Central Florida since 2013. Specializing in the listing and selling of equine properties, Dailey has personally represented a number of historic farms in the Ocala area throughout her career, including Bridlewood Farm, Padua Stables, Cashel Stud and Winding Oaks.

Dailey is a highly active member of her community and has been a long-time supporter of the FTBOA’s mission. Having served on a number of local boards both in and out of agriculture, including serving as President of the FTBOA and of the Ocala / Marion County Association of REALTORS® on separate occasions, Dailey is always looking for ways to stay involved. Currently, Dailey is a member of the Value Adjustment Board in Marion County, serves as a Director of OMCAR, is a long-standing member of the CEP and an active member of the FTBOA for 13 years.

Dailey has also been a huge supporter of several local non-profits, including being a Founding Member of Horse Farms Forever, a long-time sponsor of the Florida Horse Park, HITS, and Majestic Oaks amongst many other events, organizations, charities, and causes.

A small breeder since 1985, Dailey has had multiple stakes winners including a Breeders Cup qualifier. Together with husband Hugh and daughter Samantha, she continues to operate a successful Thoroughbred breeding farm in Ocala.

Involved in the Florida Thoroughbred industry for more than 45 years, Brent Fernung and his wife Crystal own and operate Journeyman Stud, which is home to Florida’s leading sire Khozan. Fernung’s career began at Lasater Farm during its heyday in the late 1970’s through 1984. Fernung also served as Franks Farm/Southland Division farm manager and Cloverleaf Farm General Manager. In 1989, the Fernungs established Journeyman Bloodstock Services. Fernung purchased Eileen’s Moment (dam of Lil E. Tee) just months before he won the 1992 Kentucky Derby.

As agent for Cloverleaf Farms II, Fernung purchased I’ll Get Along for $130,000 at Keeneland in 2001. Her weanling that year would become 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness-winner Smarty Jones. In 2004, Fernung, as agent, sold I’ll Get Along for $5 million, the highest priced broodmare at public auction that year. In 2006, Fernung, as agent, purchased Congrats as a stallion prospect for Cloverleaf Farms. Congrats went on to be the leading first crop sire in North America in 2010. Fernung also stood Wildcat Heir at Journeyman through his many years as Florida’s leading sire.

Fernung is a past president of FTBOA, having served the maximum of three years in that position. He was also named the 2004 Florida Farm Manager of the Year.

Current Board Member

A retired Pennsylvania steel executive, current board member Milan Kosanovich got involved with Thoroughbreds more than 35 years ago by purchasing his first broodmare as a graduate school business project. Kosanovich owns a 40-acre farm in Ocala and eight mares. A highlight came in 2009 when broodmare, Go Donna Go produced Grade 1 performers, Macho Again, winner of more than $1.8 million, and Be Fair.

That year, his Florida-breds won more than $1.6 million, comprised of 16 starters with 18 wins, 27 seconds and 21 thirds (four stakes winners). His success led him to be honored with the FTBOA Needles Award, bestowed annually to outstanding small breeding operations. Macho Again won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy and Grade 2 New Orleans and placed in the Grade 1 Whitney and Grade 1 Woodward. The daughter of former Florida stallion Exchange Rate, Be Fair won the Grade 3 Lake George. His 2009 stakes winners included Pray for Action and Izzy Rules.

His other stakes winners include Kays and Jays, a 3-year-old filly by Macho Uno, Darley OBS Sprint-winner Praying for Cash, and Its True Love.

Kosanovich has experience serving on nearly a dozen corporate and charity boards and currently serves on the FTBOA board along with the governance and audit committees. He holds an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.

Francis Vanlangendonck was born and raised in Louisiana, where he started with horses after school at the age of 14. While attending Louisiana State University at Alexandria, he realized that horses were his true passion and thus began a self-education program that took him coast to coast, from New York, to California, to Kentucky.

Vanlangendonck learned to ride as an apprentice to the master of the hounds at the Deep Run Hunt club in Richmond, Va. Eventually, he took a farm manager position in Ocala and knew he had found a home.

Vanlangendonck has owned and managed the same piece of land in northwest Marion County since 1983. He is the president of Summerfield Sales Agency Inc. which is the largest Thoroughbred Yearlings sales agency based in Florida and has been one of the largest nationally for more than two decades.

Vanlangendonck and his wife Barbara have sold well over $150 million in bloodstock including champions, Gamine, Xtra Heat and Champagne Room. Summerfield Sales, offers consignments at all major sales venues, including Keeneland, Saratoga, Fasig-Tipton Kentucky, and Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company.

Both of their sons, Arthur and Andrew, have followed their parents into the industry.

Vanlangendonck has been a member of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales company board of directors since 1990 and currently serves as the chairman of that board. He also serves on the board of Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and is currently the FTBOA second vice president. TFH

Full Moon Rising

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL—For more than 70 years, the equine model company Breyer has been the premiere brand of horse collectibles, featuring some very famous Thoroughbreds.

There’s been popular models of Secretariat, Cigar, Frankel, Zenyatta, Rags to Riches, American Pharoah, Full Moon Rising…

Wait. Who?

That’s right, meet Breyer’s latest Thoroughbred model Full Moon Rising, or Mooney as he’s known now, winless in 10 starts on the racetrack.

Wait. What?

“He won two national championships in two disciplines in the same year but couldn’t bother to win a race,” said Mooney’s owner Marsha Hartford-Sapp.

Breyer’s Full Moon Rising, a beautiful model of the raremarking Florida-bred gelding, is available and was featured during BreyerFest, a celebration featuring Breyer models that attracted some 30,000 collectors and fans to Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kenyucky in July.

“It’s amazing. It’s a big thing,” Hartford-Sapp said. “People collect these models from all over the world, little girls, and little boys. Fifty years from now people will still have these models and Mooney will still be in someone’s home.”

So how did Full Moon Rising become a Breyer model? Frankly it wasn’t for his work on the track. Bred by Betty Jean Cordero and Miracle Hill Farm LLC and owned and trained by Crystal Lanum, Full Moon Rising was winless in 10 starts, two at Gulfstream Park and eight at Tampa Bay Downs in 2019 and 2020. The son of Allamystique’s best finish was a sixth. When it came time to retire the gelding, “Crystal wanted to make sure she could find a

suitable home for him,” decorated equestrian and former Florida State University equestrian coach Hartford-Sapp said. “I got this horse when they offered to sell him. At the time I was looking for a horse for the Retired Racehorse Project.”

While Full Moon Rising didn’t tear it up on the track, he certainly did in other disciplines.

In his first year off the track, he was USEF Horse of the Year Western Dressage Open Intro and Western Dressage Suitability, National Champion Western Dressage, and the first Thoroughbred to earn National Pony Cup.

Because of Full Moon Rising’s unusual markings and success, Breyer contacted Hartford-Sapp a year ago about the possibility of making Mooney a model.

“They seek out interesting horses to make portraits of, and he has very rare markings for a Thoroughbred,” Hartford-Sapp said.

Officially listed as a chestnut by the Jockey Club, Full Moon Rising is described by Breyer as sporting dramatic splashes of white of his face, chest, belly, and tail, as well as four eye-catching long white stockings.

Hartford-Sapp, who traveled to BreyerFest, said she enjoys the model of Full Moon Rising,.

“The Thoroughbred is an amazing, incredibly versatile horse,” she said.

And some make great Breyer models. TFH

Sept. 9 – Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Sept. 11-29 – UF/IFAS Extension Marion County presents a free Equine Pasture Series from 10 a.m. to noon. on Sept. 11, 15, 25 and 29. Topics include soil fertility and pasture fertilization, pasture weed management, grazing management, pasture establishment, equine BMPs and manure management. Classes are at the extension office located at 2232 NE Jacksonville Road, in Ocala, Fla. Registration required at https://www.eventbrite.com/

Sept. 21 – UF/IFAS Extension Marion County presents the Florida Equine Institute & Allied Trade Show from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in an equine edu-tainment format combining seminars with hands-on demonstrations from University of Florida equine science experts. The event includes a working trade show of equine businesses. Topics include equine nutrition; tools for the job- bits, saddles, pads and equipment; pasture management; managing health issues in Florida horses; live demonstrations and break-out sessions. The event will be held in-person at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion, 2232 NE Jacksonville Road in Ocala. Tickets include refreshments, a BBQ lunch, and access to the event. Oct. 18 – The FTBOA annual membership meeting will be held via Zoom. Regular members of the Association will be sent a notification via e-mail to sign up for a viewing link.

DEADLINES

Sept. 29 – The nationwide equine impact study by American Horse Council closes. All industry members are asked to participate at horsecouncil.org

Nov. 15 – The Florida Sire Stakes deadline for yearlings whose May 15 payment was not made ($500). Missing this yearling deadline means a $5,000 fee on January 15. Do not assume a horse you purchased in a sale or privately has had a payment made. Sales catalogs list horses who are FSS eligible at the time of the sale because the deadline had not passed yet, meaning a payment may still be due. Contact FTBOA at 352-629-2160 to check. The two-year-old payment deadline is Jan. 15. If missed, check for additional deadlines.
