The Tragedy of Medina Spirit K entucky racing officials finally ruled on the 2021 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) on Feb. 21 after holding a hearing on Feb. 15 and there are now six Florida-bred winners of the Run for the Roses after the disqualification of Medina Spirit. The Florida-bred colt was stripped of his title after a postrace exam conducted at Industrial Laboratories, the official testing laboratory of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, and confirmed at University of California Davis that the sample contained the therapeutic steroid betamethasone, a Class C drug that is not considered to be, as some reported, a performance enhancing medication. Betamethasone is legal for equine use in Kentucky but is not allowed on race day. Juddmonte Farms’ Mandaloun, who finished second behind Medina Spirit, has been declared the winner and the only statement from Churchill Downs regarding the matter says, “[The track now] recognizes Mandaloun as the winner of the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby and extends our congratulations to owner/breeder Juddmonte, trainer Brad Cox and jockey Florent Geroux. Winning the Kentucky Derby is one of the most exciting achievements in sports and we look forward to celebrating Mandaloun on a future date in a way that is fitting of this rare distinction.” In addition to the disqualification of Medina Spirit, stewards Barbara Borden, Brooks “Butch” Becraft and Tyler Picklesimer also suspended Baffert for 90 days and fined him $7,500. Borden and Becraft are employed by the KHRC while Picklesimer is an association steward currently employed by Turfway Park and was employed by Churchill Downs during the running of the Derby on May 1. If this entire saga was a Shakespearean play, it would be difficult to determine if it was a comedy or a tragedy,

but the death of Medina Spirit at Santa Anita following a morning workout on Dec. 6 surely would favor the latter. A necropsy performed on Medina Spirit concluded that there were “no other drugs… or toxins” detected other than omeprazole, a common medication used to treat ulcers; and Lasix, both of which were consistent with a report filed with the California Horse Racing Board by Baffert’s veterinarian. The necropsy, which was performed by California Animal Health and Food Safety laboratory in San Bernadino, Calif., at the request of the CHRB and consistent with all on-track equine deaths in California, stated that the cause of death was “undetermined; sudden cardiorespiratory arrest/cardiac failure suspected.” There is no argument here against the ruling by the Churchill Downs and KHRC officials, however, it should be pointed out that additional testing ordered by Baffert and his legal team determined that the betamethasone found in Medina Spirit was applied in the form of an ointment and was not injected. Therefore, it is likely Baffert and his team will appeal the decision to the Franklin Circuit Court in accordance with KHRC rules. It should also be noted that innocent people have been hurt by this tragedy, including Gail Rice, who bred Medina Spirit in Florida; owner Amr Zedan, jockey John Velazquez and many others associated with Medina Spirit who can now only claim their association with a former Kentucky Derby winner—unless of course the appeal process at some point goes in favor of Baffert and his legal team. It should also be recognized that those that bet on Mandaloun also took a financial hit. But the appeal process is likely to continue and unfortunately this saga will continue. Whether the 147th Derby winner is Medina Spirit or Mandaloun as now to be determined by the courts, the circumstances have been damaging to the sport and those enthusiasts who breed, race, watch and bet on thoroughbred racing. Straightforward Victory for Simplification in Mucho Macho Man

There was nothing complicated about Simplification’s victory in the $150,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park Jan. 1 as the Florida-bred was an emphatic, start-to-finish winner of the oneturn mile test for just-turned 3-year-olds. Trained by Antonio Sano for Tami Bobo, Simplification also earned a $25,000 Florida-bred win bonus presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. Ridden by Javier Castellano from post three, Simplification shot to the lead from the start with fellow Florida-bred Mr Rum Rummer and 5-1 choice Skippylongstocking to his outside in the initial strides. However, Simplification increased his advantage to a length as 4-5 favorite Strike Hard moved into second after the half-mile in :45.81. But Strike Hard was unable to threaten down the stretch and Simplification ran away with a four-length victory in 1:35.04 for the mile on a fast track. Strike Hard finished seven-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Mr Rum Runner in third followed by Graphic Detail, Sport Pepper and Skippylongstocking. “Beautiful. That’s what I was looking for today,” Castellano said. “It’s exactly how I handicapped the race. I watched his replays and I worked the horse and he’s got speed but at the same time he is able to relax. We didn’t expect to be on the lead, because we were trying to stretch out the horse and let him develop a good foundation but he took it in the nice way. I didn’t want to take away anything that comes easy, and he was straightforward. “He was happy and satisfied on the lead, galloping along, and 8

when I asked him he took off and re-broke at the quarter pole. I liked the way he did it,” he added. “I felt like he did it very easy, in a nice way. I didn’t see the fractions, but he did a very comfortable, relaxed pace. I liked the way he galloped out. I don’t think he’ll have any problem stretching out. He’s well-bred and has a good foundation. Fingers crossed.” Simplification paid $10.40. It was the fourth career race for Simplification, who won his second career start by 16 ¾ lengths against state-bred maidens at Gulfstream on Oct. 23. However, he could only muster a third last out when defeated by Of a Revolution by more than five lengths. Earlier Saturday at Gulfstream, Of a Revolution finished second to Florida-bred Lightening Larry in the $100,000 Limehouse Stakes. Simplification is by Not This Time out of Simply Confection, by Candy Ride (Arg) and was bred in Florida by France Weiner and Irwin Weiner. He has now earned $125,270 for owner Tami Bobo by winning half of his four career starts with one third. Castellano considered remaining in New York for the winter before making his annual sojourn to Gulfstream, where he won the Mucho Macho Man for the fourth time. He previously won with Mask (2018), Sonic Mule (2017) and Bluegrass Singer (2015). “I think that’s the type of horse, that’s [the reason why] I’m here in South Florida, to help develop the new generation of 3-year-olds,” he said. “I’m very lucky and very fortunate to find this horse.” n

Florida-breds Markhamian, Outfoxed Take Tampa Bay Stakes $150,000 in FTBOA Bonus Money Earned By Two Winners Florida-bred stars came out at Tampa Bay Downs Jan. 15 as Markhamian took the $125,000 Pasco and Outfoxed won the $125,000 Gasparilla. Among their winnings, the two earned $150,000 in win bonuses between them that were presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. In the first contest, Markhamian put in a persistent performance from start to finish as he won the Pasco by two-and-a-half lengths in his stakes debut for owner Sergio Ripamonti, who races under the name of Santa Rosa Racing Stables. The Pasco featured a field of seven 3-year-olds who raced seven furlongs on the main track for a purse of $75,000 plus the $25,000 Florida-bred win bonus and the $50,000 win bonus for Florida Sire Stakes eligible runners. Markhamian took down both bonuses. A race later, Outfoxed, who last year won the $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl in August and $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl in September at Gulfstream Park, took the Gasparilla in her first start since the latter.

The Gasparilla featured a field of eight 3-year-old fillies who raced seven furlongs for a purse of $75,000 plus the $25,000 Florida-bred win bonus and the $50,000 win bonus for Florida Sire Stakes eligible runners. Outfoxed earned both bonuses. Markhamian and jockey Marco Menesses broke on top from post four in the Pasco but were quickly joined on their outside by 11-1 choice Magical Mousse and Isaac Castillo, who started from the outside post seven. Tucked in just behind those two were the popular pair of Provocateur at 2-1 and Florida-bred Cattin at 8-5. Racing down the backstretch, Magical Mousse maintained a narrow head advantage on Markhamian as those two put a two-length margin on Provocateur and Cattin as they finished the first quarter-mile in a quick :22.22. As they went into the far turn, Magical Mousse extended his lead to a quarter length and Provocateur moved up to challenge three-wide as Markhamian kept up on the rail. Those three turned for home after a half-mile in :44.86 with Provocateur appearing to take the lead while threewide, Magical Mousse still putting in a good fight from between horses and Markhamian dropping back a bit on the rail. Provocateur appeared to spurt away from his rivals at the top of the stretch when Markhamian suddenly began to fight back on the rail and was quickly on even terms approaching the final furlong. As those two raced past the sixteenth-pole, Markhamian shook free from Provocateur in second before drawing clear to finish in 1:23.23 on the fast track. Cattin was another length back in third followed in order by Magical Mousse and the Florida-bred trio of Cyberviking, Morgan Point and Gold Special. “This horse did everything perfect today,” Meneses said. “The fractions were a little fast, but I knew I had the horse in the last furlong.” Ripamonti said he was concerned at one point during the race but was impressed with Markhamian’s courage. “I thought he might be done on the turn, but this horse has a lot of [guts],” he said. “Marcos did a good job urging him, and he had the heart to get it done. It was a courageous effort and he drew away at the end. “He was coming into the race fantastic; he was in great shape and his color and skin tone were good. He was super-ready,” Ripamonti said. Markhamian paid $12.60 to win. Trained by Juan C. Avila, Markhamian was making just his third career start after breaking his maiden in his second try by four-and-a-

half lengths against state-bred special weight maidens at Gulfstream Park going six-and-a-half furlongs on Dec. 19. He had just missed winning his debut on Sept. 25 at Gulfstream when finishing second, a head shy of winner Avant Glory, also in a maiden special weight for Florida-breds at six-and-a-half furlongs. Markhamian is by Social Inclusion out of Peruvian Jane, by Colonel John and he now has earnings of $146,250 from his three starts. He was bred in Florida by Ripamonti. Outfoxed was making her first start since the My Dear Girl for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and owners LNJ Foxwoods, the nom du course of Larry, Nanci and Jaime Roth. With Samy Camacho aboard, Outfoxed broke from post five but was in no hurry to keep pace with early leading longshot Platinum Gem, who sprinted through the first quarter-mile split in :22.09. Platinum Gem was a half-length ahead of Florida-bred Strategic Bird to her inside and 4-1 choice Devine Charger in the three path, who were first and second respectively in the $50,000 Sandpiper Stakes at Tampa Bay in their last start on Dec. 4. As the three top fillies raced past the half-mile pole and into the bend, Outfoxed had three lengths to make up and began her assault while racing four-wide as Platinum Gem continued to show the way through a half-mile in :44.65. Turning for home, Strategic Bird drew away from Platinum Gem and Devine Charger but was quickly joined by Outfoxed to her outside and the two Florida-bred favorites hooked up in the run for home. Shamrocket Makes Successful Transition to Main Track With Sunshine Classic Victory

Gatsby and Cool Quest continued their battle as they raced down the stretch until Gatsby gained the advantage in the final sixteenth and went on to win by a length-and-aquarter ahead of Cool Quest in second in a time of 1:09.11 on the fast track. Three-and-a-quarter lengths farther back, Pudding made a late run to get third with Legal Deal, Boca Boy, Poppy’s Pride and Cajun Brother completing the order of finish. Gatsby paid $6.40 to win. Gatsby has shown promise from the beginning having won his debut, defeating future two-time Breeders’ Cup-winning Florida-bred Golden Pal, in one of the first 2-year-old races of 2020 at Gulfstream Park. He then finished sixth behind winner Cazadero in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs in June before running in all three FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes divisions at Gulfstream with his best finishing coming when second to Breeze on By in the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager in August of that year. He was also second to Poppy’s Pride in the $60,000 Juvenile

Sprint at Gulfstream in November before finishing his 2-year-old season with a fourth in the $100,000 Inaugural, also won by Poppy’s Pride at Tampa Bay Downs in December. During his 3-year-old year, he won two of 11 starts against allowance and optional claiming company with his only stakes appearance coming when fifth in the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Sophomore won by Foreman at Tampa Bay Downs in March. But he finished last year with a strong effort, finishing second, just a half-length off of multiple graded stakes-winner Drain the Clock in a upper level, $62,500 optional claiming going six furlongs at Gulfstream on Dec. 10. Trainer Carlos David was impressed with the runner-up performance and thought it was a good tune-up for Gatsby to make his 2022 debut in the Sunshine Sprint. “That was kind of a preparation for this race. Having Drain the Clock in that race was really tough,” David said. “When he ran a fast race like that, we knew he’d be competitive in this race.” Gatsby is by Arindel stallion Brethren out of Star Recruit, by Aldebaran and he now sports a record of four wins, five seconds and two thirds in 19 career starts while earning $286,420. n

After 21 career starts on turf where he won the $97,000 Point of Entry at a mileand-a-half at Belmont Park on Oct. 24, Donegal Racing’s Shamrocket made his debut on the main track a success with a hard fought victory in the $75,000 Sunshine Classic at Gulfstream Park Saturday. The Sunshine Classic was for Florida-bred 4-year-olds and older who went a mile-andone-eighth and featured a field of seven. The race also presented a $25,000 win bonus for Florida Sire Stakes-eligible runners of which Shamrocket did not qualify. Sir Ollie, who was the 8-5 second choice behind favored Shamrocket at 6-5, set the pace in the Sunshine Classic after breaking on top from post two with Junior Alvarado aboard. He went into the clubhouse turn just a head in front of Big Venezuela to his outside and extended his advantage to a half-length while clicking off the first quarter-mile in a gradual :24.81. Meanwhile, Shamrocket and jockey Javier Castellano galloped along in fourth from three-and-a-half lengths farther back. Down the backstretch, Big Venezuela took the lead from Sir Ollie as those two raced a length-and-a-half in front of Nacho Papa in third with Shamrocket still comfortable in fourth behind him. Big Venezuela finished the half-mile in :49.71 as Nacho Papa moved closer to Sir Ollie on the rail before they headed into the second turn. Just inside the half-mile marker, Nacho Papa and Sir Ollie joined Big Venezuela on the lead and those three raced in tandem around the far turn to complete six furlongs in 1:14.02. With two furlongs to run, Big Venezuela retreated as Nacho Papa and Sir Ollie turned for home in concert while Shamrocket began to slowly close the gap on the top two from the three path. Florida Focus Nacho Papa and Sir Ollie battled down the stretch in front of the menacing Shamrocket on the outside who eventually took the lead just inside the sixteenth pole. Shamrocket finished up in 1:52.26 on the fast track and a half-length in front of Sir Ollie in second. Nacho Papa was another length-and-a-half back in third as Braccio Di Ferro, Hercules, Big Venezuela and Glory of Florida completed the order of finish. Shamrocket paid $4.60 to win. “I had a perfect trip. I didn’t want to be too far back because he’s the one-run type of horse,” Castellano said. “I didn’t want him to think too much and didn’t want him to get too much dirt in his face or get bounced around in his first race on dirt. I put him in the game and took it from there. I give all the credit to Todd Pletcher.” Shamrocket also vindicated Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher’s decision to give him the opportunity to switch to racing on dirt. “He’s always trained well on it and we were kind of looking for the right time to give it a try,” Pletcher said. “I talked to [stable operator] Jerry Crawford and decided to go ahead and give it a try. It could open up some options for him. I think he’s a horse that might even handle some of these longer dirt races, marathon-type dirt races, down the road. I’m happy for the horse and proud of him for getting the job done. “I was a little concerned. There wasn’t much pace and he wants to come from off of it,” Pletcher said. “Javier did a good job of not taking him out of his running style but tried to keep him close enough to be in striking distance.” The Sunshine Classic was also a cut back in distance for Shamrocket, who came out of a fifth-place finish behind Serve the King in the Grade 2 Red Smith at a mile-and-fiveeighths on the grass at Aqueduct on Nov. 20. The Sunshine Turf, a mile-and-an-eighth stakes for Florida-bred older horses that was taken off the turf course following a rainy week, co-headlined the Jan. 22 program at Gulfstream with the $75,000 Sunshine Filly and Mare Turf, a mile stakes for older Florida-bred fillies and mares that was also run on

the all-weather course. Both races offered a $25,000 win bonus for Florida Sire Stakes eligible runners presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. Lure Him In earned the extra win bonus while Lovely Luvy is not eligible for the lucrative Florida Sire Stakes program. Lure Him In, who had made his previous 13 starts in Southern California for owners David Bernsen LLC, Jeffrey Lambert and Robert Fetkin on turf and dirt, obviously has a liking for Tapeta as well, judging from his dominating two-and-a-half-length triumph in the Sunshine Turf. Lure Him paid $11.40 to win. “It was a big concern. Genetically, I thought he might like it. But when they took it off the turf this morning, I wasn’t happy,” trainer Bob Hess Jr. said. “He apparently loved it. He’s got a new home.” The 5-year-old son of Journeyman Stud’s leading Florida sire Khozan pressed the pace set by Siglioso from the start into the stretch before drawing clear under jockey Junior Alvarado. “We targeted this race. It looked like a good spot. He’s a Florida-bred. It made sense,” Hess said. “He’s been a neat horse. Obituary: Doris Frances Link

Doris Frances Link, 84, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Jan. 3, 2021 in Reddick, Fla. She was born April 2, 1937 in Mount Vernon, N.Y. to Dominic Mirabelli and Evelyn Morfesi Mirabelli. She was a homemaker, farm manager and horsewoman. In the late 50’s her parents retired to Lighthouse Point Fla., and soon after she moved there. Thus she met her parent’s local dentist, Dr. Cornelius Link; they started dating and married. In February 1962, they culminated their interest in horses by moving to Ocala and built Flamingo Farm. Not only have they produced many successful racehorses, but developed several employees who became significant managers at several large farms. She is preceded by her parents. She is survived by her husband Dr. Cornelius “Sonny” Link; daughter, Stephanie Link; brothers, Paul Mirabelli and Peter Mirabelli. n THE FLORIDA HORSE n MARCH 2022

he Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company held their Winter Mixed Sale, the first auction of 2022, on Jan. 25-26 and started the year on a positive note with gains in nearly every area compared to the 2021 Winter Mixed Sale. The two-day auction saw 417 horses generate gross sales of $6,693,100 compared to last year when 408 horses sold for $5,612,300. The gross sales rose 19.25% while the average increased to $16,051 from $13,756 a year ago, a 16.68% improvement. The 2022 median was $8,500 compared with the $6,000 median a year ago and the buyback percentage was 10.3% while the buyback rate last year was 21.3%. For the Open session, held on the second day of the sale, 186 horses sold for a total of $2,075,600 compared with 236 horses bringing $2,023,500 in 2021. The average price was $11,159 compared with $8,574 last year, while the median price was $7,000 compared with $4,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 8.8%; it was 19.7% in 2021. For the Consignor Preferred session, 150 horses sold for a total of $3,117,800, compared with 99 horses grossing $1,896,300 in 2021. The average price was $20,785 compared with $19,155 a year ago, while the median price was $10,000 compared with $10,100 last year. The buyback percentage was 12.2%; it was 30.3% last year. For the Horses of Racing Age session, 81 horses grossed $1,499,700 compared with 73 selling for a total of $1,692,500 in 2021. The average was $18,515, compared to $23,185 a year ago, while the median price was $11,000. It was $13,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 10%; it was 12% in 2021. Three of the top five selling yearlings at the Consignor Preferred session were bred in Florida including a daughter of Gun Runner out of Homemade Mo Nae, by Uncle Mo, who topped the session at $275,000. Bred by Carol Ann Reitman, Susan Gannon and Warren Miller, the filly was consigned by Get Away Farm as an agent as Hip 86 and purchased by Breeze Easy LLC, Mike Hall. Homemade Mo Nae is a half-sister to graded stakes-winner Conquest Two Step, graded stakes-placed Sheikh of Sheikhs and stakes-winner Homemade Salsa. Hip 180, a bay son of Laoban consigned by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds LLC as an agent, was purchased by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing for $160,000. At its regularly scheduled meeting on January 7, 2022, the board of directors of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association considered the following: 1) The Board received a briefing from CEO Lonny Powell on the 2022 thoroughbred and gaming landscape and on the FTBOA’s action plan for the year ahead. He also pointed out the good schedule of Florida-bred races every weekend at Gulfstream Park and remarked on the FTBOA’s continued preparations for the 2022 legislative session. 2) The Board received a briefing from Matt Bryan on the upcoming 2022 legislative session, including a newly introduced bill on harness racing. He noted that the state is proceeding with implementation of the 2021 pari-mutuel and gaming bills, including establishment of the new Florida Gaming Control Commission. 3) The Board received a briefing from Warren Husband on the pending legal challenge to the new Seminole Gaming Compact, in which a federal district court judge invalidated the Compact. The case is on appeal, but the lower court decision ultimately led the Seminoles to take their sports betting app offline. Despite the status of this case, the state is moving forward and implementing the 2021 pari-mutuel and gaming bills even though they were expressly tied to the Compact. He also provided an update 22

Meds for Mares: Which ones are Safe for Pregnant Mares?

By Heather Smith Thomas Horse owners often wonder which drugs and medications are safe for pregnant mares and which ones should not be administered, and why, and if some might still be used and when. There are often more questions than answers on this topic, however, because very few drugs have actually been thoroughly evaluated and confirmed for validation of use in pregnant mares. Safety studies are usually done in geldings rather than pregnant mares, and we can’t always extrapolate from one group to the other. Dr. Margo MacPherson (Professor, Reproduction, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida) says there is so little known about medications and pregnancy that mare owners always need to discuss these with their veterinarians. “Even then, they can’t expect their veterinarian to have a wealth of information on this topic because we just don’t have that much data,” she says. There have not been enough studies in pregnant mares. For example, very few dewormers carry a label for use in pregnant mares. There has been some research on certain drugs and medications, but mainly all we have is just anecdotal use that suggests the majority of commonly used drugs are relatively safe for use in pregnant mares. The medications and drugs you’d use in pregnant mares cannot be adequately addressed in blanket statements, so mare owners should discuss each case with their veterinarian in terms of specific situations—with a valid client-patient-veterinarian relationship. “Any medications being administered to a horse should be discussed with your veterinarian. A horse owner or mare manager should never give anything to a pregnant mare without first talking to a veterinarian. It’s always a case-by-case situation and a very open-ended topic,” says MacPherson. “There are times we have to treat the mare to treat the fetus, especially in certain situations in late pregnancy. Early pregnancy is very different from late pregnancy in terms of how something might affect the fetus. The foal’s organs are all being formed in early pregnancy and some of the things you’d give a mare at that early stage might have more adverse effect on this development, acting as teratogens,” she says. “There has been very little research about medication use in mares at different stages of pregnancy, so when drugs are coming for approval through the FDA, adding the pregnant mare model changes everything. The physiologic changes in the mare during pregnancy are enormous; her cardiac output is increased by about two-thirds, the way the blood flow is directed in the body, the way the kidneys operate, etc. are all affected by the pregnancy. There

is a huge increase in fluid volume in pregnant women and in pregnant animals. The way the kidneys operate is very different than in the non-pregnant female,” she explains. “In turn, these changes all affect how drugs are distributed in the body, and affect what the body does with them, and the way they are cleared from the body. There are a number of metabolic pathways that these drugs undergo. Depending on the pathway, research has barely touched on what’s happening; our understanding, even in pregnant women, is very limited. Our data base of information about some of the metabolic pathways and the way the drugs are handled in the liver and kidneys is limited. We don’t know enough about some of the pharmacodynamics of the drugs,” she says. “One of the things I’ve learned in my work is that the common expectation that all drugs pass the placenta (and get to the fetus) had to be reconsidered. We’ve had to rethink that idea. I’ve treated all drugs as though they pass the placenta, however, and I probably will continue to think that, in most cases—because I am usually thinking about how a drug might affect the fetus, and not necessarily just the placentitis we’re treating, for instance. If the mare has a respiratory infection, for example, can I give her ceftiofur sodium and have it be effective for treating her, without impacting the fetus? This is usually how I am thinking about it, rather than from the placentitis view in which I am trying to look at a drug in terms of it passing through the placenta and getting to the fetus,” she explains. She has done a series of studies looking at concentrations of certain antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs in the fetus and fetal fluids. “We have looked at penicillin and gentamycin and determined that they pass through the placenta and attain therapeutic concentrations for a period of time in the allantois fluid surrounding the fetus. We have looked at flunixin meglamine (Banamine) and didn’t see whether or not it passed the placenta and we are not sure why. It may have been because the system we were using to measure it prevented it from passing, but we don’t know—but we couldn’t detect it in fetal fluids,” says MacPherson. “We have looked at trimethoprim sulfa, which crosses the placenta and also gets into fetal tissue. We have also looked at ceftiofur sodium and ceftiofur crystalline free acid (Excede). Neither of those pass the placenta very well; they have almost undetectable concentrations in fetal fluids and fetal tissues. placenta,” she explains. There can be many differences and this is why every drug needs to be tested,” she says. There have been more studies in pregnant humans than in horses, but making extrapolations from human medicine to horses is risky because the type of placenta is very different in these two species. “Making extrapolations from rats to horses to humans is also very risky for the same reasons,” says MacPherson. Dr. Peter Sheerin, Nandi Veterinary Associates in New Freedom, Pennsylvania (an equine practice with emphasis on reproduction) points out that things that can cross the placenta and affect the fetus can be different in horses versus humans. “One example is betamethasone. This steroid is used a lot in pregnant women to induce maturation of the fetus,” he says. It might be administered when a baby must be born pre-term or ahead of normal labor, to help the baby’s lungs be more prepared for functioning outside the womb. This drug does not cross the placenta in appreciable amounts in mares, however, so it won’t be beneficial if a mare is giving birth prematurely or if a foal must be delivered by C-section. Thus looking at human medications is not always the same as looking at medications in the horse. “There is some fear of using corticosteroids in pregnant mares. It’s well-known that giving a pregnant cow something like dexamethasone in mid to late gestation can cause abortion, but mares are different. Steroids are usually fairly safe for mares, but this might depend on dose and duration. High doses of dexamethasone for multiple days have been given to mares to induce abortion in late-pregnant mares, but we typically don’t use those high doses for long periods of time, for treatment. A one-time low dose is generally safe for pregnant mares,” says Sheerin. “There are antibiotics that cross the placenta and some that don’t—as far as we know. There are a limited number of the ones that we know cross the placenta, and a lot of the studies showing which ones do cross the placenta were done by Michelle LeBlanc and others who have done research with placentitis,” he says. In that situation, you want an antibiotic that will cross the placenta and address the infection. “But one thing to remember regarding placentitis is that in mares with placentitis, the placenta is abnormal; the effects of the antibiotic might be different than in a normal pregnancy. There is still a lot we don’t know,” says Sheerin. There are many other drugs and medications we routinely give horses such as dewormers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, tranquilizers, etc. that we might not think about in terms of how they might affect a pregnant mare or the embryo or fetus. “It is very important to read labels, but some will state that they have not been tested in pregnant mares. This makes it more of a challenge, but there are some labels that say ‘Do not use in pregnant 30

mares’ and you can avoid using those,” he says. “We use non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like bute and flunixin meglumine (Banamine) in pregnant mares, without issues, but the thing to remember is that they are used in moderation without issues. One moderate dose may be safe to use, whereas chronic administration might create problems,” says Sheerin. If a pregnant mare is colicky you would probably go ahead and give her Banamine. One dose might not be a problem, but if you had to keep her on it long-term it might become a problem. “The same is true with antibiotics. For example, with gentamycin we worry about issues in the kidneys with long-term use. We’ve seen foals born to mares that were on long-term gentamycin, and those foals had kidney issues.” Even though there have not been formal studies, this problem has been observed so we know there can be adverse effects on the kidneys of foals. “The important things are dose and duration, when it comes to giving medications to pregnant mares, and their potential impact on pregnancy and fetal health,” he says. If you have to give medications, give them for the least time possible and at the lowest effective dose. Your veterinarian can help guide you on these decisions in terms of your own mare, on a case-by-case basis, depending on the condition being treated. “This is a huge subject and we don’t know a lot about it,” says MacPherson. “There are many factors that can influence drug absorption, metabolism and excretion, and it’s hard to try to make judgments based on limited studies; we just don’t have the information that we need. The handful of drugs I’m looking at are just the ones that are generally used to treat placentitis in the mare,” she explains. With the wide array of drugs we give horses today, it is difficult to make safe choices and have good judgment regarding what we might give a pregnant mare. “The mare owner’s veterinarian tries to make judicious, therapeutic choices in treating something like placentitis, based on the fact that if you don’t treat the mare, you don’t treat the problem,” she says. Sometimes you have to treat a mare to save her life, and that’s your first priority rather than worry about effects on the fetus. In her research in horses she first looks at all the literature on what we know in other animals during pregnancy, mostly humans. This is often the starting point, as we try to begin studies in horses. “These studies in horses are expensive to do, however, and I’d be surprised if we see much more information in the future about how drugs are handled in the pregnant mare,” says MacPherson. The take-home message on this topic for horse owners is that we don’t know enough to be able to make really good choices and decisions when giving medications to pregnant mares, and we need to be careful. It’s imperative to discuss these things with a veterinarian. FH

t’s the busy time of year again as breeding season, foaling season, and sales are in full swing. To assist industry members, FTBOA provides columns on a regular basis to members including President Remarks, CEO Corner, Legislative Update and Member Motivator. These columns are sent to FTBOA members first via our Member Update and are subsequently published in Wire to Wire Racing Digest digitally and then are made available on our website at www.ftboa.com. The State of Florida and Florida Department of Agriculture are pro-business and offer incentives for breeders and owners within our state. The latest Member Motivator topic focuses on these for tax season. FTBOA Champions Award Gala The FTBOA will once again be hosting an in-person event on April 25 in Ocala at the Circle Square Cultural Center. The event includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, dinner, and awards ceremony. The event is capped at 250 people. Award winners, gala sponsors and distinguished VIPs receive priority. The evening attire is a cocktail dress, gown, or suit and tie in the suggested colors of emerald, gold, black or silver. Sponsorship packages include onsite event pack-

FTBOA Mission The mission of the FTBOA is to promote the Florida thoroughbred. One of the ways FTBOA promotes the industry is through community and industry outreach. In the heart of the Florida breeding region, FTBOA offers classes promoting the role of the Florida thoroughbred in Ocala. On April 7, a class titled “The Road to the Kentucky Derby Begins in Marion County” is being offered at 10 a.m. and on April 12, a class titled “A Spectator’s Guide to Understanding Thoroughbred Sales” is being offered at 9 a.m. To sign up for the Master the Possibilities community classes for a small fee, go to https://masterthepossibilities.org/ . The Derby class is held at the On Top of the World communities and the sales class is held at Ocala Breeders’ Sales. These are perfect classes for newcomers to the industry.
