Florida Economy On Stage at Kentucky Auction

Florida-breds generate nearly $5 million in sales during first five sessions of Keeneland September Sale

At a time when good economic news comes in small doses, Florida thoroughbred breeders and consignors are spurring local economic indicators in a far more positive direction.

The Florida thoroughbred industry has a $2.7 billion annual economic impact in the Sunshine State and the first five sessions of the 12-session Keeneland September Yearling Sale illustrate how some of those dollars are generated by Florida thoroughbred horsemen and enthusiasts.

In the opening five sessions (Sept. 12-17) of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale conducted in Lextington, Ky., through Sept. 24, Florida-bred yearlings have generated sales of nearly $5 million in the world’s most competitive and prestigious thoroughbred marketplace.

During that span, 14 Florida-bred yearlings out of the 956 total horses sold outpaced the overall average by nearly 6%, $318,571 compared to $300,981.

In the prestigious opening two days, Book 1, sessions, two Florida-bred colts generated final bids of $775,000, topping their Sunshine State peers.

The first was a colt by first crop sire Omaha Beach out of the multiple graded stakes-producing mare Achalaya, by the Florida-bred stallion Bellamy Road that was bred by Loren Nichols. Sold as Hip 123 from the Gainesway consignment, the dark bay or brown colt was purchased by Peter Brant of New York City

in the name of his White Birch Farm.

The next day, Mike Repole of Whitestone, N.Y., partnered with Robert and Lawana Low of Springfield, Mo., to outlast all other bidders to acquire Hip 370. The Florida-bred colt by Into Mischief out of the stakes-winning Medaglia d’Oro mare Osare that was consigned by Denali Stud as an agent for John and Leslie Malone’s Ocala-based Bridlewood Farm, who also bred the handsome bay colt.

While Florida-bred yearlings certainly represented the Sunshine State with aplomb, several consignors based in Marion County stole the spotlight. Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck of Morriston, who market world class thoroughbreds in the name of their Summerfield consignment, led the way.

A yearling out of the Summerfield consignment for Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet topped day three of the sale with a $1.4 million price tag on a final bid from Larry Best of Boston in the name of his OXO Equine. While Banke has her Stonestreet breeding and racing operations based in Kentucky, her Stonestreet Training and Rehabilitation Center—a 220-acre, state of the art facility managed by Ian Brennan—is located in Marion County in Summerfield, Fla.

Stakes Record for Havnameltdown in Best Pal

Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman’s Havnameltdown had little trouble in duplicating his debut victory against special weight maidens on July 24 as the Florida-bred colt defeated nine rivals in the $202,500 Best Pal (Grade 3) at Del Mar on Aug. 14.

It was the second consecutive year in which a Florida-bred won the six furlong test for 2-years-olds after Rustlewood Farm Inc’s Pappacap won the Best Pal last year.

Sent to the post as the odds-on favorite at 1-2, Havnameltdown and jockey Juan Hernandez broke quickly from the outside post 10 as longshot Man Child applied pressure from post seven and fellow Flor ida-bred King Adrock made it a three-horse fight for the lead from the rail.

The trio sprinted through the first quarter-mile in a quick :21.74. Havnameltdown began to separate from his rivals around the turn be fore Agency and jockey Mike Smith mustered a challenge from the out side.

OBITUARY

Garner Vinson

Garner was born in Matador, Tex., in 1932. He grew up farming with his father and brother until he went to work as a cow boy for six years on the Pitchfork Ranch in Guth rie, Tex. His small stature brought him to the race track where he rode for awhile and then went out on his own training at the New England race tracks. He trained the stake winners Mystic Clown, Final Luck and Nezzie Berlin and also owned and raced Verbarctic.

He retired from the track in 1995, bought a 60-acre farm and named it after Verbarctic, who retired here and lived to the age of 30 and is buried under his favor ite tree. Breeding was added to breaking and training and the homebreds are still running with son John at Gulfstream. His other son Lee, is running the farm.

Alzheimer’s slowly progressed until the age of 90. He passed away July 2 at Hospice. He has been cremat ed and was buried with his family in Paducah, Tex. n

Havnameltdown completed the half-mile in :44.87, he turned for home a length in front, increased his margin down the stretch, even tually hitting the wire two-and-a-half lengths in front of Agency in a stakes-record time of 1:10.22 on the fast track. Man Child was nearly six lengths farther back in third followed by Pop d’Oro, Jin Tong, Fleet Feet, Mardukas, Florida-bred Arman, King Adrock and Quagmire Mag ic.

“I was outside and my plan was to stay second or third, but he was real aggressive out of the gate,” Hernandez said. “He wanted to go to the front so I just let him run and do his thing. At the quarter-pole, he was getting kind of lazy, so I woke him up a bit and he picked it up really well and got to the wire.”

Baffert said he expected Havnameltdown to again show the speed, based on the colt’s conformation.

“He is built for speed if you look at him,” Baffert said. “He is very precocious looking; his sire [Uncaptured] was very fast. That will be his kind of distance. He has been solid and that was a good group of horses. He looked great in the paddock and has been training well. Happy we got the W.”

Havnameltdown, who now has earnings of $168,000 in two starts, is by Uncaptured out of the Florida-bred mare Ashley’s Babe, by Put It Back and was bred by Katherine S. Duvall. He is the first winner from three starters for Ashley’s Babe, who also has an unnamed yearling colt by Tapitue and was bred to Maximus Mischief this year.

Havnameltdown was a $200,000 purchase by Three Amigos out of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale in April where is was consigned by Blas Perez Stables. Perez purchased him as a yearling at the OBS October Sale for $16,000 out of the Beth Bayer consignment. n

Floridians Named to TOBA Board of Trustees and Officers

The Thoroughbred Own ers and Breeders Associa tion announced on Aug. 11 the re-election of Brant Laue as chairman of its board of trustees. Also joining Laue on the board of trustees to serve three-year terms as new members are Billy Koch, Braxton Lynch, and Francis Vanlangendonck.

Vanlangendonck, with wife Barbara, owns and op erates Summerfield Sales located in Morriston, Fla. He is also the chairman of the board for Ocala Breed ers’ Sales.

Re-elected to three-year terms were current trustees Doug Cauthen, Marshall Gramm, Stephanie Hronis, Jason Loutsch, and David O’Farrell.

O’Farrell is the general manager of Ocala Stud.

Following its annu al members meeting, the TOBA Board of Trustees met to elect officers for the asso ciation. Officers named for 2022-2023 are: Brant Laue, chairman, David O’Farrell, vice-chairman, Dan Metzger, president; Doug Cauthen, secretary; and Garrett O’Rourke, treasurer.

The TOBA board also approved the appointment of David O’Farrell and reappointment of Barbara Banke to the American Graded Stakes Committee. The 2022-2023 committee is com prised of TOBA members Everett Dobson (chair), Barbara Banke, Craig Bernick, Walker Hancock, Brant Laue and David O’Farrell and racing officials Frank Gabriel (NYRA), Rick Hammerle (Oak lawn Park and Kentucky Downs), Ben Huffman (Churchill Downs and Keeneland), Chris Merz (Santa Anita Park), and Thomas Rob bins (Del Mar).

Damon’s Mound Dominates Saratoga Special

Cliff and Michele Love’s homebred Damon’s Mound drew off in the stretch to win the Grade 2 Saratoga Special at Saratoga Race Course on Aug. 13, creating a series of firsts in the process. Da mon’s Mound was the first winner at Saratoga for trainer Michelle Lovell with her first starter as a conditioner and gave his accom plished young sire Girvin, who stood the 2022 season at Ocala Stud, his first graded stakes winner in his first crop.

Facing three other 2-year-olds over six-and-a-half furlongs in the $186,000 test, Damon’s Mound broke a half-step slow from post two which may have proven to be beneficial to the bay colt as Super Chow, fellow Florida-bred Valenzan Day and 2-5 favor ite Gulfport engaged in a three-horse sprint through a fast :21.94 first quarter-mile. Meanwhile jockey Gabriel Saez placed Damon’s Mound just behind the trio and waited for the battle up front to take its toll on the three leaders.

Super Chow made the first move as the quartet traveled into the far turn, taking a length lead ahead of Valenzan Day and Gulf port while Saez remained patient on Damon’s Mound in fourth with three-eighths of a mile to the finish. Super Chow’s lead evap orated mid-way around the bend when Damon’s Mound circled his rivals with a quick, two-wide acceleration.

Super Chow continued on even terms when the latter bore out, forcing Gulfport to check as Damon’s Mound took over turning for home.

Super Chow tried to muster a challenge into the stretch, but Da mon’s Mound put distance on his rivals past the three-sixteenths pole and was well clear inside the final furlong as Gulfport took over the second spot some four lengths back.

Damon’s Mound crossed under the wire in 1:17.94 and threeand-a-half lengths in front of Gulfport in second with Super Chow and Valenzan Day completing the order of finish.

“It was perfect. I was so happy where we were laying where we were tracking,” Lovell said. “And then Gabe couldn’t hold him any longer and he just let him creep on up there and make his little move. He did his job.

“It’s incredible. All props to the horse. He’s just awesome and he proved it and spoke for himself. I couldn’t be happier for his owners. They’re breeders, they [didn’t sell him], and they got re warded for it. I wouldn’t have traded him for any horse.”

Saez too gave credit for the strategic performance to Damon’s Mound.

“He broke a step slow. Next thing I know he’s moving along,” Saez said. “So, for a three horse, four horse field, not too much traffic and I was able to squeeze him out into the clear and make my move when I really wanted to. And when I asked him to kick that gear, he did it. We turned for home and I switched leads and he was gone. He came home nicely and comfortably.”

Damon’s Mound was let go as the 9-5 second choice and paid $5.70 to win.

The victory was not only the first at Saratoga for Lovell, but also qualifies as the most important in a training career that be gan in 2003 after a brief stint as a jockey.

“It’s a Grade 2, so it’s my biggest accomplishment with a horse with so much potential,” Lovell said. “My other horses that we’ve won graded races with have been close to my heart and I’m so proud of them.

It was the second win in two starts for Damon’s Mound, who won a Churchill Downs maiden special weight by 12½ lengths in his debut on July 2. Damon’s Mound is the first foal out of the stakesplaced mare San Antonio Stroll, by Stroll and earned $110,000 for the victory to push his revenue line to $145,560 from two starts.

Damon’s Mound has an unnamed yearling full sister, an un named weanling full brother and San Antonio Stroll was bred back to Girvin again this year. He is the second stakes-winner for Girvin, who was also represented by $150,000 Astoria-winner Devious Dame at Belmont Park on June 9.

Damon’s Mound received his early training at Ocala Stud be fore being sent to Lovell to begin his racing career. n

Late-Blooming Pudding Wins Benny the Bull

It took 7-year-old Pudding 33 starts before he won his first stakes race when he took the $100,000 NYRA Bets Sprint on Flor ida Cup Day in March at Tampa Bay Downs and the Florida-bred gelding added a second at Gulfstream Park with a one-length vic tory in the $65,000 Benny the Bull against five Florida-bred rivals on Aug. 13.

The seven furlong Benny the Bull offered a $35,000 purse en hancement for a Florida Sire Stakes-eligible winner presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, however, Pudding did not qualify.

Owned by trainer Elizabeth Dobles and Imaginary Stables, Pudding was the 7-2 second choice in the Benny the Bull after finishing second to fellow Florida-bred Willy Boi in the Grade 3 Smile Sprint at Gulfstream in his previous start on July 2. The dark bay or brown gelding took full advantage of dropping into state-bred competition in the Benny the Bull.

King Cab broke best of all from the outside post seven and quickly had two lengths on the foursome of Real Talk, Gatsby, Pudding and Absolute Grit for the run down the backstretch. King Cab finished the first two furlongs in :22.26 as Pudding continued to race between rivals Gatsby and Real Talk approaching the far turn.

King Cab continued to show the way around the turn as Gatsby and Pudding closed the gap on the leader. Gatsby was the first to catch King Cab approaching the quarter-mile marker with Pud ding behind them after a half-mile in :44.90.

Jockey Leonel Reyes swung Pudding three-wide turning for

home as King Cab began to tire on the rail with Gatsby holding a half-length advantage on the eventual winner with less than a furlong to run. Pudding wore down a stubborn Gatsby as they raced by the sixteenth marker and finished in 1:24.22 on the fast track.

Gatsby finished second by three-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of a late-running Morgan Point in third and they were followed in order by Shivaree, King Cab, Absolute Grit and Real Talk.

Pudding paid $5.40 to win.

Pudding had success in lower class races last year with four straight wins from April through August starting with two victories against $20,000 claimers in April at Tampa Bay Downs and in June at Gulfstream before Dobles claimed him for $25,000 out of a winning effort against first-level optional claimers in July, also at Gulfstream. He then won a $60,000 overnight handicap at Gulfstream on Aug. 8 before ending his streak with a fourth-place finish behind winner Rough Entry in an upper level, $62,500 optional claiming in September. He ended the year with a third in the $85,000 Claiming Crown Transit won by Miles Ahead in December before two more thirds in Gulfstream stakes before winning the Sprint on Flor ida Cup Day.

Pudding has now won 10 of 36 career starts with eight sec onds and nine thirds and earning $388,360. He is by Two Step Salsa out of Jozi’s Turn, by Johannesburg and was bred by JSL Thoroughbreds.

As a yearling, he twice passed through the auction ring at Oc ala Breeders’ Sales but did not sell in the Winter Mixed Sale in January. Consignor Beth Bayer then sent him through the OBS Yearling Sale in August where Vladimir Kazakov bought him for $10,000.

Boo Boo Kitty Wires Satin and Lace for First Stakes Victory

Since breaking her maiden in her sixth try, Rice Racing’s Boo Boo Kitty has now won three of four races including her first against stakes company on Aug. 15 when the Florida-bred filly took the $100,000 Satin and Lace at Presque Isle Downs.

Trained by Kevin Rice, Boo Boo Kitty was an easy winner af ter leading from start to finish against a field of seven fillies and mares, 3-years-old and older going six furlongs on Tapeta.

Jockey Addiel Ayala took the 3-year-old Boo Boo Kitty right to the front from post five and had a length lead on longshot Make scentstous in second with Tactical Pajamas just to her outside in third and Cashable on the rail. Down the backstretch, Boo Boo

Kitty extended her lead to a length-and-a-half while finishing the first two furlongs in :22.20. Into the far turn, Tactical Pajamas and Cashable tried to close gap and 7-5 favorite Club Car made a strong three-wide move to join the chase.

Boo Boo Kitty continued to show the way turning for home after a half-mile in :46.62 as Club Car, Tactical Pajamas and Cash able battled for second.

Cashable and Club Car tried to wear down Boo Boo Kitty in the stretch but could not catch the stubborn leader who began to extend her lead inside the final sixteenth and finished in 1:08.30, just .53 off the track record of 1:07.77 set by Surly Furious in July.

Boo Boo Kitty won by three-and-a-half lengths ahead of Club Car in second with Maggie’s Bid making a late run to get third another half-length back. They were followed, in order, by Dynas ty of Her Own, Cashable, Tactical Pajamas, Can’t Buy Love and Makescentstous.

Boo Boo Kitty was let go at 13-1 and paid $29.20 to win.

Bred by Stonehedge LLC, Boo Boo Kitty is by Poseidon’s War rior out of Seductive Lady, by Langfuhr. She has now won three of nine career starts with two seconds and two thirds with earnings of $124,000.

Seductive Lady currently has eight winners from 11 starters highlighted by multiple stakes-winners Two T’s At Two B and Scandalous Act and stakes-placed Wicked Rascal. Scandalous Act swept the filly division of the Florida Stallion Stakes in 2013 with victories in the $75,000 Desert Vixen, $125,000 Susan’s Girl and $300,000 My Dear Girl. Seductive Lady also has an unnamed 2-year-old colt by Khozan. n

Sister O’Toole Travels West to Win CTT and TOC at Del Mar

Although Sister O’Toole had not won since taking a first level allowance race at Belmont in July of last year, the Florida-bred mare had been collecting checks at the graded stakes level in six of her eight starts since. In her other two races, she lit the board with a second-place finish to La Dragonetea (GB) in a second level, $80,000 optional claiming on grass at Saratoga last year in Au gust and a fifth behind fellow Florida-bred winner Lovely Luvy in the Sunshine Filly and Mare Turf at Gulfstream in January.

The Graham Motion trainee put it all together on Aug. 19 at Del Mar when she won the $100,000 CTT and TOC over a mile-andthree-eighths on the grass in a mild upset of 4-5 favorite Neige Blanche (Fr), who finished fifth.

Macadamia (Brz) broke on top from post five and led by a length ahead Neige Blanche and Bellamore in a joint second around the first of three turns and past the grandstand for the first time in :24.57 for the first quarter-mile and the half-mile in a leisurely :49.32.

Down the backstretch, Bellamore moved up to join Macadamia on the lead as Umberto Rispoli rushed Sister O’Toole from last to third on the outside of Neige Blanche on the rail. They finished six furlongs in 1:15.09 and the mile in 1:38.66.

As they came around the far turn, Rispoli confidently took Sister O’Toole four-wide and wore down Bellamore and Macadamia with Scarabea beginning to threaten on the far outside.

Sister O’Toole took the lead inside the final sixteenth to win by a half-length in 2:15.27 with Scarabea second. Bella more was third followed by Macadamia, Neige Blanche, Du vet Day (Ire), Freedom Lass and Almost a Factor.

Sister O’Toole paid $11.00 on a $2 win ticket.

Coming off of a second-place finish to fellow Florida-bred Key Biscayne in the Robert G. Dick Memorial (G3) at Dela ware Park on July 9, Sister O’Toole improved her record to three wins, five seconds and three thirds in 17 starts with earnings of $298,032.

Sister O’Toole is by Pleasant Acres Stallions’ Amira’s Prince (Ire) out of the unraced Distorted Humor mare O’Toole and was bred in Florida by Helen and Joseph Barbazon. She is the second stakes winner for O’Toole who also produced Happy Ticket-winner Lady O’Toole by Colonel John and has six winners from seven starters. O’Toole also has an unraced 2-year-old filly, Frosty O Toole, by Frosted and an unnamed weanling colt by Gun Runner. She was bred to Neolithic, who also stands at Pleasant Acres Stallions in 2022. n

Jalen Journey Wins Second Stakes Through DQ And Upsets Chesapeake

The 7-year-old Florida-bred Jalen Journey has never crossed the finish line first in a stakes but earned his second black type victory through the disqualification of the winner on Aug. 16 at Colonial Downs when he was placed first in the $150,000 Ches apeake.

Last September, Jalen Journey finished second to Won drwherecraigis in the Grade 3 DeFrancis Dash at Laurel Park but was given the victory when officials took down the latter for interference in the stretch.

Let go at odds of 16-1 in the six furlong Chesapeake, Jalen Journey paid $35.20 on a $2 win ticket while winning in his first start for trainer Norm Cash and owner Built Wright Stables LLC. Necker Island finished a neck in front of Jalen Journey but the stewards disqualified the winner for bearing in on Factor It In and Jalen Journey in the stretch.

Jalen Journey is a brown ridgling by With Distinction out the unraced Petunia Face, by Congrats. He has now won 10 of 22 career starts with three seconds and a third with earnings of $662,445. He was bred in Florida by Dennis Foster and Edward Pendray and was a $14,000 yearling at the 2016 Ocala Breeders’ Sales August Sale where Randy Bradshaw as agent picked him out of the Kim Harrison consignment.

The Canadian Juvenile featured a field of eight 2-year-olds go ing six furlongs. Cuban Cobra and jockey Enrique Gonzalez broke on top and quickly established a length lead before It’s a Fact and Lil Zapper hurried up to make it a three-horse battle for the lead down the backstretch.

After a quarter-mile in :22.37, Cuban Cobra put a head in front from between horses with It’s a Fact second to the outside and Lil Zapper still in contention on the rail.

Around the far turn, Cuban Cobra shook free to lead by a length ahead of It’s a Fact in second as Laun took over the third spot from another length-and-a-half back.

Cuban Cobra showed the way passing the quarter-pole while clicking off a half-mile in :45.17 and began to pull away from his rivals down the stretch as Readytotapnsing took over second with a late run from sixth.

Cuban Cobra finished the six furlongs in 1:10.73 with Ready totapnsing finishing two lengths faster than It’s a Fact in third. They were followed in order by Smart Cat, Lahun, It Can’t Hurt, Lil Zapper and Rememberthealamo.

Cuban Cobra paid $5.70 to win as the second choice behind the runner-up, who was the 3-2 favorite.

Time Passage First Winner for Tunwoo

Laurie Plesa and Glassman Racing LLC’s Time Passage gave Bridlewood Farm freshman sire Tunwoo his first winner on Aug. 19 at Gulfstream Park when she won a Florida-bred maiden spe cial weight by two-and-three-quarter lengths after five-and-a-half furlongs.

Trained by Edward Plesa and ridden by Kevin Krigger, Time Passage had to catch early leader The Mrs, who took a length lead on the former into the far turn before finishing the first quar ter-mile in :22.09.

Time Passage took advantage of the inside track and shook free at the top of the stretch to finish in 1:05.13 on the fast track with The Mrs finishing second by a nose ahead of Atomically.

It was the second career start for Time Passage, who finished fifth behind winner Go Lil Lady in her first start under the same conditions at four-and-a-half furlongs on June 9.

Time Passage is out of the stakes-winning mare Saving Time, by Kantharos and was bred by Baoma Corp.

Tunwoo is by Medaglia d’Oro out of Sea Gift by A.P. Indy and stood the 2022 season for a fee of $4,000. n

Violent Turbulence Shakes Up Parx Dash

Florida-bred Violent Turbulence sent a tremor through the $200,000 Parx Dash on Aug. 23 with a three-and-a-quarter-length victory at odds of 12-1 after leading at every pole.

Trained by Kathleen Demasi for Pewter Stable and Spedale Family Racing LLC, the 5-year-old gelding entered the five-furlong Parx Dash under main track only conditions and remained in the seven-horse field when the race was moved off the turf.

Violent Turbulence breaking on top from post five with jock ey Silvestre Gonzalez up, was quick to establish control ahead of 42-1 longshot Extreme Force to his outside after 4-5 favorite Doc Amster started a step slow from post six.

Violent Turbulence extended his lead to a length-and-a-half around the turn ahead of Extreme Force in second while clicking off the first quarter-mile in :22.43 and stretching his advantage to two lengths before turning for home. Violent Turbulence was three-and-a-half lengths in front in deep stretch as Extreme Force continued to pursue through a half-mile in :45.74 and Doc Amster moved into third from two lengths farther back.

Violent Turbulence finished in :57.95 on the fast track with Extreme Force holding second, nearly four lengths clear of Doc Amster in third. They were followed, in order, by War Tocsin, Mid towncharlybrown, Scuttlebuzz and Runningwscissors. Will Call, Justwaveandsmile, The Connector and The Critical Way were all off-the-turf scratches.

Violent Turbulence paid $26.40 to win and the $2 exacta with Extreme Force paid a whopping $430.60.

It was the first career start and first lifetime victory against stakes company for Violent Turbulence, who had just won a sec ond level, $35,000 optional claiming at six furlongs at Parx on July 13 in his previous start. He now has six wins in 18 starts with

three thirds and the $115,800 first-place check pushed his career earnings to $274,975.

Violent Turbulence is by Violence out of T’as d’Beaux Yeux, by Desert Party and was bred by Beckie K. Cantrell and Charles Kent Cantrell. He was purchased by Pewter Stable for $40,000 out of the All Dreams Equine consignment at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale in 2019. He also sold at OBS as a yearling during their October Sale when Nicolas Bloodstock went to $25,000 to buy him out of the Beth Bayer consignment.

Violent Turbulence is the first foal out of T’as d’Beaux Yeux, her only winner from two starters and four foals including an un named yearling filly by Enticed and a weanling filly by Complexi ty. She was bred to Cutting Humor in 2022.

In 11 runnings of the Parx Dash, Violent Turbulence is the fifth Florida-bred winner. Tightend Touchdown won the race un der handicap conditions in 2015 while Pure Sensation is a threetime winner having triumphed in 2016, ’17 and ’19. n

State Argues for Seminole Gambling Deal

Pointing to “enormous economic benefits,” Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office on Aug. 24 urged a federal appeals court to overturn a ruling that blocked a gambling deal between the state and the Seminole Tribe.

Lawyers in Moody’s office filed a 32-page brief at the U.S. Cir cuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, arguing that a district judge erred last year when she ruled that the deal ran afoul of the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which regulates gam bling on tribal lands. U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich focused on part of the agreement, known as a compact, that would have allowed the Seminole Tribe to operate sports betting in Florida.

The plan was designed to allow gamblers throughout the state to place bets online, with the bets run through computer servers on tribal property. The compact said bets made anywhere in Flori da “using a mobile app or other electronic device, shall be deemed to be exclusively conducted by the tribe.”

But Friedrich said the deal violated the Indian Gaming Reg ulatory Act because it would allow gambling off tribal property. She ruled Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, whose agency oversees Indian gambling issues, erred when she allowed the deal to go into effect last summer.

The Department of the Interior this month urged the appeals court to reinstate the compact. The state’s friend-of-the-court brief Wednesday also called for reinstatement, saying that betting off tribal property is addressed by state law. It said the judge’s con clusion included an incorrect premise that the “compact itself au thorizes online sports betting throughout Florida.

To the contrary, Florida state law independently authorizes such betting included in the compact, and whether that state law comports with Florida’s Constitution does not control whether the secretary’s deemed approval was lawful.

The compact, negotiated by Gov. Ron DeSantis and ratified by the Legislature, was expected to bring in $2.5 billion for the state during the first five years. It also included allowing the tribe to offer craps and roulette at its casinos and to add three casinos on its property in Broward County.

“The 2021 compact provides enormous economic benefits to both the state of Florida and the tribe,” Wednesday’s brief said. “And that compact is lawful.”

Gulfstream Park with a length-and-a-half victory against special weight maidens at five furlongs in May before traveling to Saratoga for the Sanford.

The With Anticipation presented a field of seven 2-year-olds who went a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the inner turf for a purse of $175,000.

Florida-bred El Conejito shot to the lead from post five and led Boppy O and jockey Dylan Davis by a length heading into the club house turn with 2-1 favorite Andthewinneris sitting a length-anda-half off of those two in third.

El Conejito, who went off at 26-1, continued to show the way down the backstretch and around the far turn with Boppy O just to his outside as they clicked off quarter-mile splits of :24.93 and :50.09 while maintaining two lengths on Andthewinneris.

Midway on the turn, Boppy O put a head in front of his Flor ida-bred rival as Andthewinneris began to threaten while threewide. Those three finished six furlongs in 1:15.65 while three abreast.

When they hit the top of the stretch, Boppy O shot to the front with Andthewinneris continuing to challenge on the outside. El Conejito could not keep up and began dropping back. Boppy O fought off Andthewinneris several times in the run for home until the latter surrendered inside the final furlong when Battle of Nor mandy made a late run from mid-pack.

Battle of Normandy came up a neck short under the wire as Boppy O finished up in 1:46.93 on the good turf with Andthewin neris another length-and-a-half back in third. Determinedly, No ble Huntsman, Our Dream Rye’d and El Conejito completed the

order of finish.

Davis said he felt good going into the With Anticipation after Boppy O had trained well in recent weeks.

“Going into this, [Boppy O] was showing high energy levels from last time. He was really coming into the race really nicely,” Davis said. “He broke real sharp. I could’ve taken the lead, but I wanted him to get his stride comfortable going into the first turn. He was loving every part of it. I took the lead early, but he was do ing it so comfortable and any challenger that came up to him late, he was putting them away. He was still a little green and spotty, but he still had a lot left in the tank. He was moving really nicely.”

Casse won his second consecutive With Anticipation after tak ing last year’s renewal with Coinage. He had thought Boppy O would like to turf based on his pedigree and two works on the Saratoga grass. Boppy O went five furlongs in 1:01.60 on Aug. 14 and was the fourth fastest of 74 on July 31 when he breezed four furlongs in :48.

“My feeling is that Bolt d’Oro, a lot of them are going to be grass horses,” Casse said. “So it was about the grass, but it was also [that] I wanted to run him farther. I had thought about running him in the Sapling [on Aug. 27 at Monmouth Park], just because it was two turns at Monmouth. But then I said, ‘You know, I’m going to breeze this horse over the grass.’ I thought he breezed good enough on the grass that he deserved a shot. I’m happy, but I’m not shocked.”

This is the second stakes victory at Saratoga this year with a Florida-bred for the Casse-Davis combination after they won the $135,000 Fasig-Tipton De La Rose with Our Flash Drive on Aug. 7.

Boppy O, is by Bolt d’Oro out of Pappascat, by Scat Daddy and is a half-brother to graded stakes-winner Pappacap, both of whom were bred by George and Karen Russell’s Rustlewood Farm Inc. Pappascat was graded stakes-placed on the grass including a sec ond-place finish to Strike Charmer in the 2014 Cardinal Handicap at Churchill Downs. She has an unnamed yearling colt by Omaha Beach and a weanling colt by War of Will. She was bred to Candy Ride (Arg) this year.

Boppy O was a $190,000 purchase by his owners at the 2021 Keeneland September Sale where he was consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield. He is the first grad ed winner for Bolt d’Oro.

Boppy O paid $48.20 to win.

Breeze Easy LLC is the nom du cours of Mike Hall and Sam Ross who also campaigned Florida-bred stakes winners Imprimis and Shang Shang Shang. Remains Purrfect After Dominating Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL—She may not always be cat quick from the starting gate but Lynx again pounced on her rivals in deep stretch to win the $200,000 Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owner’s Association Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl at Gulfst ream Park on Sept. 3. The bay daughter of Arindel’s stallion Breth ren remains unbeaten in three starts including her victory in the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen on Aug. 6, the first leg of the lucrative series for 2-year-old fillies by FTBOA regis tered Florida stallions.

The filly division of the Florida Sire Stakes concludes Oct. 1 at Gulfstream with the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl at a mile-and-a-sixteenth. The last filly to sweep the Desert Vix en, Susan’s Girl and My Dear Girl was Scandalous Act in 2013.

With jockey Edgard Zayas aboard, Lynx broke well from post four in the Susan’s Girl as Cajun Tease sprinted to the front from post three along with Time Passage on the outside as the eight fillies left the seven furlong chute and began their trip down the backstretch.

Cajun Tease extended her lead to a length-and-a-half on Time Passage in second while Lynx and Guardian Angel raced togeth er in third from a length farther back as they finished the first quarter-mile in :22.53. Approaching the turn, Cajun Tease contin ued to have daylight on Time Passage in second as My Cajun Lady advanced on the rail to join Guardian Angel in a joint third while Lynx dropped back to fifth just behind the latter two.

After a half-mile in :45.63, Cajun Tease continued to show the way while still a length-and-a-half in front of Time Passage on the outside and Guardian Angel on the rail when Zayas took Lynx fourwide to begin her run.

Cajun Tease took a short lead ahead of Time Passage into the stretch before Guardian Angel took advantage of her ground saving trip to put a head in front while Lynx was full of run on the outside.

Lynx shook free and was two lengths clear of Guardian Angel passing the sixteenth pole before drawing off to win by four-andthree-quarters lengths in 1.25.79 for seven furlongs on the fast track. Guardian Angel finished a length-and-a-half clear of Cajun Tease in third as Time Passage, Shiloh, High Fashion Lady, My Ca jun Lady and Girl Bye completed the order of finish.

Lynx paid $3.80 to win as the odds-on favorite.

“Today she broke a lot better and was a lot closer and sharp. Once I got her to the outside, she started coming and coming,” Zayas said. “Seven furlongs is a tough race for fillies the first time, but I wasn’t concerned about her finishing. I knew they would come back.

“She’s still learning,” he added. “She’ll be better next time. She was better this time than last time. I think [the mile-and-a-

sixteenth distance of the My Dear Girl] will fit her perfectly. She does everything pretty easy. It may not look that way because I’m asking her. But everytime I ask her for something, she responds. She is a nice filly.”

Winning trainer Carlos David was quick to praise Zayas who executed his plan to get Lynx out of the starting gate and engaged early in the race.

“I told Edgard it was key to get a good break. Last time, she had been off so long, she broke a little slow and it took her a little while to get into the race. That was key that she got a good break and was up there with the bunch,” David said. “She was able to take a bit of a breather, then came around and finished strong. I have to give it up to Edgard. He did a great job getting her up there, taking her out and getting that ultimate gear.”

Lynx broke her maiden by a length-and-three-quarters going five furlongs against special weight maiden fillies at Gulfstream on May 19 before winning the Desert Vixen. The daughter of Arindel stallion Brethren has earned $233,000 in her three victories and represents the sixth win in the Florida Sire Stakes for her sire. In addition to Lynx, Brethren sired Cookie Dough, winner of the 2018 Susan’s Girl and My Dear Girl; and Octane, who took the 2021 Af firmed and In Reality.

“[Brethren] has been great for us,” Arindel’s Brian Cohen said. “What I’ve always said about him is the percentage of his foals that get to race and those that get to race continue running. The ones that start early continue to run as five and 6-year-olds and that is a great trait of his. He throws horses that run short and long and on turf and dirt and just a little bit of everything. We breed a select group of mares to him and they throw foals that all run. And I can’t say that it is anything other than Brethren because he is the com mon denominator there.”

Lynx is out of Red Bullet mare Darby Rose, who has produced seven runners from nine foals, all of which are winners includ ing multiple stakes-winner African Rose and graded stakesplaced Mewannarose, both by Bwana Charlie. She also produced stakes-placed Weisser and an unnamed yearling filly, both by Brethren.

Cohen said the Florida Sire Stakes continues to be an import ant part of the successful breeding and racing program at Arindel, which is located in Ocala.

“We believe in Florida racing and the Florida Sire Stakes is a key part of it. We look forward to the Florida Sire Stakes every year to see who the top 2-year-olds are and who is going to be able to compete here. We love the program and we’ll continue to [enter] as many in as we can.” TFH

in Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL—CSLR Racing Partners’ Awesome Strong muscled his way to the lead around the far turn and had complete control at the five-sixteenths pole in the $200,000 Flori da Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed at Gulfstream Park Sept. 3.

The attractive chestnut son of Ocala Stud’s first crop sire Awe some Slew powered his way to a three-length victory against 10 rivals in the seven furlong race, keeping his record unblemished in three starts.

After breaking his maiden by six lengths in a four-and-a-half furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream on May 6, Awesome Strong won the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager by nearly five lengths after six furlongs in his second start three months later at Gulfstream.

Trained by Jorge Delgado from the start, Awesome Strong was purchased for $500,000 by Alex Childs and his father Bill Childs in the name of their CSLR after his first victory. The new own ers kept Awesome Strong with Delgado and supplemented him for $10,000 to make him eligible for the Florida Sire Stakes for 2-year-olds by FTBOA-registered stallions.

Awesome Strong continues to pay dividends for the CSLR Racing team while keeping his record perfect in three starts and winning the first two legs of the rich Florida Sire Stakes series, which concludes Oct. 1 with the $400,000 In Reality at a mileand-a-sixteenth.

Awesome Strong broke evenly from post five in the Affirmed but was immediately under a tight hold from jockey Miguel Vasquez who let longshot Gran Slash sprint to a clear lead as they left the chute and began their journey down the backstretch. As they went past the six furlong marker, 69-1 choice Undalay raced up to take a short lead from Gran Slash and those two blazed through the first two furlongs in :21.84 while Awesome Strong

continued to tug against Vasquez while a length-and-a-half back in third.

As the two leaders sprinted past the half-mile pole, Vasquez relaxed his hold on Awesome Strong just a bit and steered to him the three path where he cruised past the two leaders with appar ent ease and confidence. After a half-mile in a blistering :44.89, Awesome Strong took control while extending his lead to two lengths on 9-2 second choice Turbo, who had moved into second.

While Turbo tried to make a run at Awesome Strong turning for home, he was no match for the 4-5 favorite who had a threelength lead while drifting out in deep stretch.

Awesome Strong maintained his margin to the finish while stopping the teletimer in 1:24.77 on the fast track as Turbo fin ished four lengths clear of Apocalypso in third. They were fol lowed, in order, by Commandant, Cajun Hope, This Run’s for You, Maximo, Bouncer, Ensign Skip, Undalay and Gran Slash.

Awesome Strong paid $3.60 to win.

Just as it appeared, Delgado confirmed that Vasquez said the biggest challenge was keeping Awesome Strong under control early and just off the torrid pace.

“Miguel told me that the toughest thing for him was to hold the horse, because he wanted to jump on them,” Delgado said. “That wasn’t the plan. We didn’t want to go with them.

“It’s very emotional. We’re excited the way he performed,” Del gado continued. “He showed me today he is a special horse. He can run on the front. He can race in the mid-pack and he likes to win. But as Kobe Bryant once said, ‘The job’s not finished.’”

Awesome Strong is expected to try to become the first 2-yearold to sweep the Florida Sire Stakes since Three Rules won the Dr. Fager, Affirmed and In Reality in 2016. The third and final leg of the open division is the $400,000 In Reality at a mile-and-onesixteenth on Oct. 1 at Gulfstream.

Alex Childs, who ventured to Gulfstream from Fort Worth, Tex., to be on hand to watch their rising star, said he continues to be im pressed.

“We’re blown away by the progression Awesome’s had,” Childs said. “He keeps getting better and better and better. You ask him to do something and he does it… so far. It’s something else. Yes we took a bet on him but we thought he was something special and right now he’s proven us right. So we’ll keep going.”

Awesome Strong is out of Pleasant Ring, by Pleasant Tap and was bred by John B. Penn. A $30,000 purchase by Elena Racing out of the Sue Vacek consignment at the 2021 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Octo ber Yearling Sale, Awesome Strong now sports a bankroll of $218,000 in his three starts.

For 2023, there are five director vacancies on the FTBOA board to be filled for threeyear terms running until October 2026. Pursuant to the Association’s bylaws, the current board of directors nominated the following five candidates for these vacancies: 1) Marilyn Campbell; 2) Joe O’Farrell III ; 3) Jerry D. Campbell ; 4) Mike Hall; and 5) Mary Lightner. Each candidate agreed to run and to serve as an FTBOA director. The FTBOA bylaws also allow a candidate to self-nominate by circulating a petition and obtaining 25 member signatures. No such person was filed. As provided in the Association bylaws, because there are only five candidates for five director vacancies, members will not be required to cast ballots and these five candidates will be deemed elected to office upon the presiding officer calling the FTBOA’s annual meeting to order. Current board members Valerie Dailey, Brent Fernung and Phil Matthews, DVM end their terms at the start of the annual meeting.

Following is more information about the candidates.

Marilyn, along with her late husband Gil, established the 600-acre Williston–based Stonehedge Farm South in 1988. Since then, the farm has been a perennial industry leader. From 2016-2021, Stonehedge has been the number one producer of Florida-bred foals annually. The Campbells were named Breeder of the Year in 1997, 2013 and in 2016. In 2021, Stonehedge was the second leading Florida-bred breeder by earnings with $2.5 million.

As of July 2022, the farm has bred 89 black-type stakes winners including millionaires Blazing Sword and Marlin. Stakes winners include Cajun Magic, Grade 3 winners Well Defined and Always Sunshine. Me and Mr. C., and Grade 2 stakes winner Ivanavinalot, dam of Songbird, are among their Florida-bred stakes winners.

Stonehedge has approximately 200 head of horses on the property and stands Cajun Breeze, a son of Congrats. Marilyn and Gil first became involved in the sport in 1982 with Florida-bred stakes winner Shananie. The horse was the first stallion to stand at Stonehedge.

For decades, Marilyn has been supportive of Florida-breds and the Florida program and brings that same passion for improving Florida racing and breeding to the table and is a perennial leader in programs like the Florida Sire Stakes. FSS winners include Liam’s Lucky Charm, Breeze on By, Well Defined, Lenzi’s Lucky Lady Go Jo Jo Go, Scandalous Act, Two T’s At Two B, My Brown Eyed Guy, Cajun’s Magic, Blazing Sword, and Ivanavinalot.

She has been a significant sponsor of many Florida Thoroughbred Charities events raising funds for thoroughbred retirement.

Joseph M. O’Farrell (Ocala Stud) – FTBOA board secretary

Joseph M. O’Farrell, III is a native of Ocala. His passion for thoroughbreds comes from growing up on the family farm, Ocala Stud. In his early years, O’Farrell worked on the farm mowing fields and feeding and caring for the farm’s yearlings. A member of the Boy Scouts of America, he earned his Eagle Scout award in 1994. After high school in Ocala, he went off to Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina where he was a student athlete on the tennis team. In 1999, O’Farrell graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with emphasis in accounting. After college, he went to work for The South Financial Group and Carolina First Bank in Anderson, South Carolina.

In 2004, he moved back to Ocala and became a manager at Ocala Stud, managing the financial side of the farm. In late 2004, O’Farrell purchased the broodmare Lady Discreet along with his brother David and Ocala Stud as partners. In 2009, Lady Discreet became the producer of Calder Oaks winner Chary, by Montbrook.

Ocala Stud has been a perennial leading Florida commercial breeder and has either solely or in partnership bred more than 100 stakes winners, including Eclipse Award winning Musical Romance, and graded stakes winners Turbulent Descent, Tackleber ry, Rigoletta, Gourmet Dinner, and Shadowbdancing. Ocala Stud currently stands 13 stallions. Joe has served on the FTBOA board as treasurer and is currently secretary.

Joseph married Alicia W. O’Farrell in 2007. Their son Joseph “Michael” O’Farrell, IV was born in 2008.

Board-nominated Jerry D. Campbell - Volar Corporation

Veteran banker and longtime thoroughbred owner/breeder, Jerry is the chair/CEO of the bank holding company, New South Bancorp, Inc. in Tampa and was founder/ has served as COB of HomeBancorp, Inc., and COB at Republic Bancorp since 1986.

Campbell taught finance, banking and investment courses at Wayne State Univer sity. He has a B.S. degree in liberal arts from Central Michigan University, a M.B.A. degree from Wayne State University and The University of Michigan where he later served 10 years on the Dean’s visiting committee for the business school. Campbell has served on the Board of Trustees for Central Michigan University. Campbell was Michigan Entrepreneur of the Year in 1993. Campbell previously served as a director, president/CEO of Magna Entertainment, Inc.

Campbell has been breeding and racing thoroughbred horses for more than 55 years. He currently owns 25 thoroughbreds, including race horses, mares and foals. All of the breeding is in Florida. His trainer is Kathleen O’Connell.

Among the horses raced by Jerry are stakes winners Crash Pad, Diamond Gate, Mont Ridge, Post It, Proud Ridge, Sea Legs, Terko Bates, Axe of Courage, I Match Too, This Cats on Fire, Wave Pool, Charlies Fire, and Valley Loot. The latter, a daughter of Demaloot Demashoot, was named Michigan’s Horse of the Year and top 3-year-old filly in 2007.

He roughly has two dozen racehorses at Tampa Bay Downs and launched Team Equest, a Florida-based syndicate initiative designed to attract new owners to racing via a fractional ownership plan in 2014. He races under Volar Corporation and owned Florida-bred Indy Lyon, a winner on Florida Cup Day at Tampa last year.

Founded in 2016, Breeze Easy has rapidly established itself in thoroughbred rac ing, breeding and sales and has campaigned graded stakes winners on both sides of the Atlantic and presented top quality offerings at leading weanling and broodmare sales. In just a few years, Breeze Easy horses have visited the winner’s circle at both Royal Ascot and the Breeders’ Cup. Hall maintains an elite band of around 25 mares, among them Shoppers Return – the dam of Imprimis – champions Academic and Paquita Coqueta, grade 1 winner Belle Gallantey, and graded stakes winners Call Pat, Lady Sabelia, Miss Sunset, Selcourt, and Yahilwa, among others at two farms – one in Ocala.

Mike has been involved with horses his entire life. He grew up on a family farm in West Virginia where his love for horses began. Later, Mike became involved in team roping, a passion that led to becoming a co-owner of Classic Rope Company, and subsequently the formation of Equibrand, a group of companies that continue to play a vital role as a supplier to the equine industry. Mike is a successful entrepreneur, owning multiple other businesses, with a primary focus in the oil and gas industry.

He bought his first thoroughbred at Ocala Breeders’ Sales in 2016 and has purchased Florida-breds out of the Ocala Breeders Sales. He also owned Florida-bred Ascot winner Shang Shang Shang. He stands Curlin’s Honor at Pleasant Acres Stallions.

Mary Lightner - Shooting Star Thoroughbreds

Mary is a licensed trainer from a well-regarded, longstanding thoroughbred family based in Williston. The Lightner family owns and operates their broodmare farm in Williston and they break and train 20-30 yearlings each year at Oakridge Training Center in Morriston.

Mary, and her father Mike, are active participants at the sales, and have purchased a couple of standouts in the past few years, including eventual Grade 3 winner Island Commish and multiple graded stakes winner Kathleen O. Their burgeoning broodmare division at Oak Glen Farm in Williston focuses on Florida-breds.

Mary established Shooting Star Thoroughbreds with the awareness that there is a growing interest and passion for thoroughbred ownership. The syndicate, focusing on Florida bred/Florida sires, has brought well over 100 new owners to the business. Shooting Star affords the access and opportunity of ownership at a reasonable price point and engages individuals with a curious interest to make their dream become a reality.

Experiencing the thrill and excitement of ownership and the ability to share those moments within a racing community and other like-minded members is the cornerstone of Mary’s vision for Shooting Star Thoroughbreds.

Formed in 2019, the syndicate had a 92% in-the-money strike rate in their first 12 starts, partly due to Florida-bred and Florida 2 Year Old Champion Chance It, a dual winner in the Florida Sire Stakes. They now stand Chance It at Journeyman Stallions in Ocala. She has been a speaker at a Tampa TOBA seminar and to an FTBOA bus trip group at Gulfstream sharing her expertise in the industry. TFH

Before her one year term as the president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association comes to an end at the conclusion of the annual meeting on Oct. 21, Valerie Dailey sat down with editor-in-chief Brock Sheridan to discuss her time leading the association and her additional thoughts about the future of the thoroughbred indus try in Florida.

Dailey began the session with some remarks about her time in office relative to past years.

VD—My year as president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association is coming to an end. Thankfully it has been a relatively trouble-free year. However, just because we weren’t stomping the halls of Tallahassee every week or engaging attorneys to look over complicated compact agreements, it was still filled with strategy sessions, planning, and negotiations.

TFH—What was your biggest surprise about the position?

VD—My biggest surprise about this position was that I didn’t have to write a President’s letter/blog for each month! And, for that, I am very grateful!

TFH—What parts of the “all-in” voluntary leadership did you enjoy the most?

VD—I thoroughly enjoyed being part of an amazing group of indivi duals that believe in the Florida breeding program. It’s not hard to put in the time when you enjoy the stories of past, the strategic thinking and planning sessions and interacting with staff that are phenomenal at their jobs

TFH—What did you find the most frustrating and why?

VD—Probably the most frustrating is the amount of time and energy that is expended to work with all the various entities to have a viable Florida racing program. After all the years on the board, I still don’t understand why everyone won’t work together. We should have the same goal from all perspectives. Florida racing is good for everyone, so why not work together to make it the best?

TFH—What is it like to be an FTBOA board member, as an officer and as President?

VD—Well, it’s super easy to be a part of the FTBOA in any capacity! There are just five general meetings each year and because of the pandemic we have instituted virtual meetings through Zoom if you are not able to attend the meetings in person. The staff pre pares all the meeting materials for you prior to the meetings and all you need to do is to come and participate! If you move up the ladder and hold an office there are a few more meetings to attend, but many of those can be attended through Zoom as well. Again, the materials for the meetings are prepared by staff. Super easy to review the notes, staff is super accommodating in answering any questions. So, all you need to do is attend and participate. Bring your questions, listen, offer suggestions and work with a great group of fellow horsemen.

TFH—What are your future FTBOA plans?

VD—As the immediate past president I will remain on the execu tive board as a non-voting member. I will also continue to support and participate with the fundraising activities (annual golf tour nament and gala, etc) that the association promotes and sponsors. And, who knows - I might just be back after my year is up as I truly believe in the Florida thoroughbred industry and want to give back to an organization that supports my love of horses.

TFH—Why is it important for Florida thoroughbred owners and breeders to be members of FTBOA?

VD—Membership in our professional organization is a way for a group of like minded people with similar objectives and common goals to join together to have the voice of many, versus the voice of one. Joining this organization can lead to enhanced perspectives and knowledge of the industry, along with support for creating positive change. We need to hear people’s ideas and suggestions. We need for people to be involved to support the future of this industry. Another aspect of being a member of FTBOA is one can participate in the many special discounts and promotions which the staff has worked tirelessly to get the best deals for our members.

TFH—Why should people own/breed/race Florida Breds?

VD—Florida-breds have had considerable success at Florida tracks recently with Florida-breds winning 48% of the races at the summer Royal Palm Meet at Gulfstream with 74% of those winners by Florida stallions. Florida-breds remain strong during the winter Championship Meet at Gulfsteam, winning 31% of tho se races with two thirds of them by Florida stallions.

Florida-breds were equally successful at Tampa Bay Downs. Last year, Florida-breds won 36% of the races there and three out of every four of those winners were by Florida stallions. Flori da-breds continue to be a force outside of Florida with several gra ded stakes winners this summer at Del Mar, Saratoga, Woodbine and every track in between. And like every year, I look forward to again seeing another strong Florida representation at the Bree ders’ Cup and on the Triple Crown trail next spring. TFH

If anyone was all in on the Florida thoroughbred industry, it was the late Gilbert G. Campbell. From a 25% investment in Flor ida-bred stakes-winner Shananie in 1982, Campbell and his wife Marilyn progressed to establishing Williston-based Stonehedge Farm South in 1988. And Florida-bred success quickly followed.

As a breeder, Campbell recorded his first Florida-bred stakes winner when Philadream won the 1990 Warren County Stakes at Meadowlands. A 1988 colt by Premiership, Philadream was out of Florida-bred Terrible Terri T., by Greek Answer, a Grade 1-placed mare who Campbell had raced. Terrible Terri T. also produced Lynn’s a Dream, a 1989 filly by the aforementioned Shananie and who became the first stallion to stand at Stonehedge Farm South. Lynn’s a Dream became Campbell’s first Florida-bred that he bred and raced. Lynn’s a Dream won the 1992 Daffodil Stakes at Phil adelphia Park.

From that jumping off point, Campbell was soon on his way to being a perennial leading Florida breeder. Since 1996, Campbell/ Stonehedge LLC has been a top 10 Florida breeder, with its Flor

ida-breds earning at least $1 million each season. To date, Camp bell/Stonehedge LLC has bred at least 88 Florida-bred stakes win ners, including 12 graded stakes winners. Among that number are Florida-bred millionaires Blazing Sword and Marlin, both by Stonehedge Farm South stallion Sword Dance (Ire).

“Gil loved everything about the Florida thoroughbred indus try,” said Marilyn Campbell, whose husband passed away on Sept. 16, 2021, at 91. “He loved our farm; he loved breeding and racing Florida-breds. The plan is to continue on with Gil’s legacy.”

That legacy includes Campbell being named Florida Breeder of the Year three times.

In 1997, Campbell earned his first of three Florida Breeder of the Year titles, posting Florida-bred earnings of $3,227,781 in North American purse money. He bred eight Florida-bred stakes winners, including multiple Grade 1 millionaire stakes-winner Marlin. On the season, Marlin won four graded stakes races, in cluding the Arlington Million (G1) and the San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap (G1). He earned $1,521,600 on the season and was named the 1997 Florida-bred champion turf horse.

best numbers to date in key categories and earning his second Florida Breeder of the Year title. Campbell was the leading Florida breeder by Florida-bred earnings ($3,477,482), stakes winners (8), stakes wins (13) and wins (130). Leading the way was Campbell homebred stakes-winner Scandalous Act, who became only the fourth filly to sweep all three races of the Florida Stallion Stakes (now known as Florida Sire Stakes) at Calder. She joined Nancy’s Glitter (1997), Aclasssysassylassy (2004) and Awesome Feather (2010) as the juvenile fillies to accomplish that feat. Scandalous Act won the Desert Vixen, Susan’s Girl and My Dear Girl of the lucrative series by a record-setting combined winning margin of 22 lengths. A 2011 bay filly by Stone hedge Farm South stallion Act of Duty out of Seductive Lady, by Langfuhr, Scandalous Act earned $328,000 on the season. She was named the 2013 Florida-bred champion 2-year-old filly.

Three years later, Campbell was once again at the top of the leader board and collected his third Florida Breeder of the Year title. In 2016, Campbell was the leading Florida breeder by Florida-bred earnings ($2,761,261), stakes winners (6) and wins (91). Three of Camp bell Florida-bred stakes winners were graded stakes-winners: Grade 1-winner Noted and Quoted, who won the 2016 Chandelier (G1); Reporting Star, who captured the Appleton (G3); and Always Sunshine, who won the Maryland Sprint Handicap (G3).

In 2016, Campbell, who served three terms as FTBOA board president, transitioned to breeding horses in the name of Stonehedge LLC for estate planning purposes and the breeding name change had no negative effects on Campbell’s success.

In 2020, Stonehedge LLC was the leading Florida breeder by Florida-bred earnings with $2,699,622. An additional $295,366 was earned by Florida-breds bred in Camp bell’s name. In 2021, Stonehedge LLC was the third-leading Florida breeder with $2, 577,705 and $230,253 was earned by runners bred in Campbell’s name.

Affinity for the FSS

Larry King, who has been the Stonehedge Farm South farm manager since 1988, noted that for all Campbell’s success at the racetrack, he was particularly partial to the Florida Sire Stakes.

“Mr. Campbell just loved seeing each new foal crop, watching them develop and picking out the ones to run in the Florida Sire Stakes,” King said. “It was part of his commitment to the Florida thoroughbred industry by standing stallions and breeding his mares with an eye on the FSS.”

Florida Sire Stakes winners. Those horses have posted 18 FSS wins, includ ing the aforementioned Scandalous Act’s 2013 sweep. Fred and Jane Brei’s Jack Or Better Farm’s to date has also notched 12 FSS winners, who have recorded 19 FSS wins, including three sweeps.

In 1996, Blazing Sword posted Campbell’s first FSS victory when he captured the Dr. Fager and Affirmed divisions. He finished third in the In Reality on his way to earning $246,710 that season. A 1994 bay gelding by Sword Dance (Ire) out of Demetroula, by Singular, Blazing Sword was named the 1996 Florida-bred champion 2-year-old colt and became a mul tiple-graded stakes winner of $1,184,055.

In addition to Blazing Sword and Scandalous Act, other Campbell/Stone hedge LLC homebreds who won multiple FSS races include: Ivanavinalot (2002 Susan’s Girl and My Dear Girl); My Brown Eyed Guy (2013 Dr. Fager and Affirmed) and Breeze On By (2020 Dr. Fager and Affirmed).

In 2021, Stonehedge LLC homebred Cajun Magic, a 2019 chestnut geld ing by Stonehedge Farm South stallion Cajun Breeze out of Mollie’s Magic, by Factum, won the Dr. Fager for the eighteenth win in the series by a Campbell/Stonehedge LLC homebred.

Campbell/Stonehedge LLC homebreds have captured the Dr. Fager five times, the Affirmed four times; the Desert Vixen and Susan’s Girl three times; the My Dear Girl twice and the In Reality once.

Fittingly, the inaugural running of the Gil Campbell Memorial Stakes shared the same card as the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl and In Reality on Oct. 1 at Gulfstream Park.

There were several other yearling consignors with Florida ties during the initial days at Keeneland including Meg Levy’s Bluewater Sales; Richard Kent’s Kaizen Sales, Craig Bernick’s Glen Hill Farm and John and Susan Sykes’ Woodford Thoroughbreds. At press time, several more local yearling consignors were expected at Keeneland during the second week of the auction. We anticipate that they will generate several million dollars in continuing revenues.

The Keeneland economic ripple in Florida stretches far beyond the sales ring, of course. A quorum of graduates— from auctions in Kentucky, New York, Maryland, Florida and beyond—quickly board vans headed South to training centers owned and operated by world-class horsemen where they will take advantage of reliable weather and the pristine facilities in learning how to train and race.

It is estimated that the thoroughbred population in Marion County and surrounding areas swells to as many as 38,000 with the influx of fall yearlings, joining the thousands of other thoroughbreds who also reside and train here.

Thoroughbreds create more than 21,000 jobs on nearly 200,000 acres of farms and training centers locally and generate a state-wide economic stimulus greater than that of major league baseball’s spring training.

Whether it is Florida-bred yearlings selling for millions of dollars throughout North America or thousands of thoroughbreds and horsemen generating millions of dollars in local goods and services during all months of the year, a few weeks at a Kentucky auction paint the rich picture of healthy Florida thoroughbred commerce. The University of Florida Agricultural Education & Communication department is conducting a research study titled ‘Horses Teaching Us to Lead’ on the impact of youth-related horse experiences on adult leadership skills. The program administrators are looking for FTBOA members who have had significant horse experience in their youth. To participate in the 30-minute study, contact Caitlin Lunzmann, graduate assistant in the Agricultural Education & Communication program, at caitlin.lunzmann@ufl. edu or 905-550-6491 for a link to the survey. Some participants may also be selected/asked to take part in a two-hour follow-up interview discussing horse experiences and their relationship to leadership competencies.

Oct. 7 - The Florida Thoroughbred Charities golf tournament will be held at the Del Webb Stone Creek Golf Club in Ocala. The day’s activities include a brunch at 10:30 a.m., co-hosted by the Florida Thorobred Fillies Club, with guest speakers FTBOA member Dr. Tiffany Atteberry, who rode in the 2022 Mongol Derby, and Dr. Dianne McFarlane, the new chair of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine’s department of large animal clinical sciences.

Mid-day activities include a charity silent auction and a book signing by author Mary Perdue for her new book Landaluce. A shot gun start kicks off

golf at 1 p.m. with many promotions held on the course. Sports celebrities will be playing for charity throughout the day. In addition, a cocktail reception and dinner will be held at the end of the tournament. Oct. 21 – The FTBOA annual membership meeting will be held in-person on Oct. 21 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales pavilion. The meeting starts at 1 p.m. and a catered BBQ, sponsored by Farm Credit of Florida, will be served prior to the meeting. Regular members were sent via email details in late September regarding the meeting agenda. No RSVP is required for the meeting, however, an RSVP will be necessary for the BBQ by Oct. 17 that is open to current, regular FTBOA members.

Upcoming Deadlines

Nov. 15 - The Florida Sire Stakes deadline is for yearlings whose May 15 payment was not made. It is $500. Missing this yearling deadline means a $5,000 fee on January 15. Do not assume a horse you purchased in a sale or privately has had a payment made. Sales catalogs list horses who are FSS eligible at the time of the sale because the deadline had not passed yet, meaning a payment may still be due. Contact FTBOA at 352-629-2160 to check.
