Welcome to the February issue of The Florida Horse, our annual statistical review highlighting the outstanding achievements accomplished by Florida-breds in 2022.

It was another proud year for Florida as 69 Florida-breds won 98 black type stakes of 98 stakes, of which 22 were graded stakes.

For the third consecutive year, Journeyman Stud’s Khozan topped all Florida sires with nearly $4.4 in progeny earnings while Girvin, who stood the 2022 breeding season at Ocala Stud, topped the first crop and juvenile sires with $1.9 million in progeny earnings.

Brethren, who stands at Alan Cohen’s Arindel, was the second leading Florida sire for the third consecutive year with progeny earnings of $3.1 million while Jess’s Dream, who stands at Ocala Stud, rounds out the top three in 2022 with nearly $2.6 million in progeny earnings.

Arindel led all Florida breeders with more than $3 million in earnings followed by last year’s leader, Stonehedge Farm South LLC with $2.8 million. Arindel also led all Florida breeders with six stakes victories in 2022, ahead of Stonehedge LLC and Rustlewood Farm Inc., who had three added-money victories each during the year.

Florida-breds Gatsby, Clapton, Key Biscayne, Lynx, Octane and Turbo all won black type stakes this year under the green and white colors of Arindel, who also led all owners of Floridabreds with $1.9 million in earnings.

Later this year, the 2022 Florida Breeder of the Year will be recognized on a vote by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association board of directors. The board will also vote on the 2022 Horse of the Year and the Broodmare of the Year.

Dorth Vader Sets Stakes Record in Sandpiper Earns $50,000 FTBOA FSS Win Bonus

as they took their battle out of the chute and onto the backstretch.

Florida-bred Dorth Vader set a stakes record while winning her second consecutive added-money test as the Florida-bred filly won the $100,000 Sandpiper at Tampa Bay Downs Dec. 3. The dark bay or brown daughter of Girvin finished the six furlongs in 1:09.35 on the fast track, eclipsing the mark of 1:09.76 set by

Lady Radler and jockey Antonio Gallardo shook free for a onelength advantage past the half-mile marker to finish the first two furlongs in :22.04 as Dreaming of Snow chased in second. Meanwhile, Dorth Vader was another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Lady Radler continued with her clear lead around the turn as Dorth Vader and Dreaming of Snow raced together in second before Dorth Vader ranged up to the outside of Lady Radler as they passed the quarter-mile marker to complete the half-mile in :44.92.

Lady Radler had a head in front of Dorth Vader as they raced by the eighth pole when Dorth Vader found another gear and quickly accelerated away from her rivals. She then cruised home to finish two-and-a-quarter lengths faster than late-running Florida-bred Awesome Pic in second. Lady Radler finished two-and-a-quarter lengths farther back in third followed by Dreaming of Snow and Final Episode.

Dorth Vader paid $5.80 to win.

Dorth Vader now has three wins from five starts with a third and earnings of $206,228.

“I love her. She is sweet and relaxed and doing everything perfect,” Meneses said.

Yates said he had some concern when Dorth Vader drifted out slightly coming out of the turn.

Feeling Mischief in the 2020 Sandpiper. Dorth Vader missed the track record of 1:08.67 set by Florida-bred It’s Me Mom in the Hilton Garden Inn Sprint on Florida Cup Day in 2012.

Trained by Micheal Yates for owner and breeder John Ropes, Dorth Vader also took down a $50,000 purse supplement from the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association as a Florida Sire Stakes-eligible winner, giving her an $81,000 payday including the $31,000 winner’s share of the purse.

Dorth Vader now has three wins in five career starts including a four-length victory in the $75,000 Juvenile Fillies Sprint over seven furlongs at Gulfstream on Oct. 29. She won her second start against special weight maidens going five-and-a-half furlongs at Gulfstream in August and her only blemish is a third-place finish behind Atomically and Lynx in the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl going a mile-and-a-sixteenth on Oct. 1.

“I was a little nerve-wracked at the quarter pole, but she kicked on and did her thing. I thought she ran incredible,” he said. “She is a very consistent, nice filly, and Marcos was very patient on her.”

Dorth Vader is named for Dorothy Harden, Ropes’ significant other.

“I have horses named for my children and grandchildren but wanted to name a horse after Dorothy,” Ropes said. “So Chris Fekay [wife of Rose Grove Farm manager Jeff Fekay] and I name all of our horses and that is how we came up with Dorth—for Dorothy—Vader.

“Dorth Vader was always a favorite on the farm. Gayle Woods trained her. We didn’t send her to the sale because she was a little off-set and you know how they like perfect horses at the sale. Everybody loved Dorth Vader, including Gayle. She said this is a racehorse, so we decided to race her. And it’s fortunate that we did.”

Dorth Vader is out of stakes-placed Yonaguska mare Hardcore Candy, who Ropes purchased for $23,000 in foal to Wildcat Heir in the name of his Rose Grove Farm at the 2014 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Fall Mixed Sale.

Hardcore Candy has produced five winners from six starters with Dorth Vader her only black type progeny. She also has The-

forcebewithyou, a yearling filly by Air Force Blue and an unnamed weanling filly by Ocala Stud’s Adios Charlie.

“The Adios Charlie filly is the best of the lot,” Ropes said. “I have a number of nice weanlings this year and everyone likes the Adios Charlie filly.”

Ropes went on to say that he is lucky to still have Hardcore Candy.

“We almost lost Hardcore Candy last year, and that is why we didn’t breed her,” Ropes said. “She had a deep abscess that no one could find but our farrier, John McMahon, found it and he is the one that saved her.”

Ropes said that Hardcore Candy will again be bred to Girvin in 2023. n

Speed Boat Beach Rebounds to Win Cecil B. Demille

Speed Boat Beach bounced back from a ninth-place finish in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Grade 1) won by Mischief Magic at Keeneland on Nov. 4 to win the Grade 3 Cecil B. Demille at Del Mar by an easy half-length on Dec. 4.

The Cecil B. Demille, run at one mile on the turf for 2-yearolds, was the second stakes victory for Speed Boat Beach and first around two turns. He also won the $102,000 Speakeasy going five furlongs on the grass at Santa Anita on Oct. 2.

Speed Boat Beach set a new Del Mar track record for five-and-ahalf furlongs on the main track in his debut, covering the distance in 1:01.86 while winning a maiden special weight by a lengthand-a-quarter.

Ridden in the Cecil B. Demille by Flavien Prat, Speed Boat Beach started well from post seven and immediately engaged recent maiden-winner Game Time and jockey Umberto Rispoli as those two raced together around the first turn. With Game Time in front of Speed Boat Beach by a half-length on the rail, the pair sprinted through a first quarter-mile in :22.82 before moderating the pace down the backstretch to complete the half-mile in :47.30 on the firm turf while keeping daylight on 2-1 second choice First Peace and jockey Mike Smith in third.

Speed Boat Beach took over around the far turn but could not shake free from a stubborn Game Time, who chased the confident Speed Boat Beach the length of the stretch as they finished in 1:35.38. It was another length-and-three-quarters back to First Peace in third while Ah Jeez, Ransomware, Ze’bul, Fleet Feet and Kolomio completed the order of finish.

Speed Boat Beach paid $5.40 to win as the 8-5 favorite.

to be on the lead. But Umberto [Rispoli on Game Time] wanted to go, so we were fine running second,” Prat said. “My horse was relaxed and that’s what I wanted. When it came time, he went about his business. Two turns, no problem today. Good race for him.”

Speed Boat Beach provided trainer Bob Baffert with his first victory in the DeMille and hopes of better things ahead.

“I liked the way he relaxed and [yet] he has the speed,” Baffert said. “For a horse that can go from a five-and-a half [furlongs] track record and then win going a mile on the turf, that’s a pretty good racehorse and he’s going to get better with age. So we’ll just pick our spots with him. Just have fun with him.”

Speed Boat Beach races in the familiar orange and yellow colors of owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman and was bred in Florida by Richard Heysek’s Caperlane Farm.

He was a $200,000 purchase by his current ownership team in the name of their Three Amigos banner at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale where Speed Boat Beach was consigned by Really and Truly Thoroughbreds. He also sold for $12,000 as a yearling at the 2021 OBS October Sale where Rubin M. Sanchez bought him out of the Stuart Morris consignment.

Speed Boat Beach is by Bayern out of the unraced mare Sophia Mia, by Pioneerof the Nile and has now won three of four career starts while banking $178,000. He is the first foal out of Sophia

Memorial Service for Angel Penna Jr. Held at Gulfstream

Angel Penna Jr. was remembered Dec. 14 in memorial service in the winner’s circle at Gulfstream Park.

Penna, the son of Hall of Fame trainer Angel Penna Sr., was honored on the same day Gulfstream played host to the Via Borghese, a race named after one of Penna’s many graded-stakes winners. The winning trophy was presented by his late father’s wife, Elinor, and his widow, Ruth.

Penna, who passed away Nov. 22 in Boca Raton, trained Eclipse Award winners Christmas Past and Laugh and Be Merry. He also trained Grade 1-winners Auntie Mame, Remarkable News, Diamondrella, Perfect Arc, Nine Keys and A Phenomenon.

Penna was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina before taking out his trainer’s license in 1980. Penna was a much-respected horseman and a great ambassador for the sport. n

Mia, who also has an unnamed yearling filly by Distorted Humor and a weanling filly by Volatile. She was bred to Army Mule in 2022. Sophia Mia was purchased by Caperlane for $4,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. n

Angel Morales Rides First Winner in U.S.

Angel Morales, a 19-year-old native of Panama, rode his first winner in the U.S. Dec. 16 when he won Gulfstream Park’s ninth race aboard Sheza Happy Girl.

Racing third between horses down the backstretch and around the turn of the $12,500 claiming event going seven furlongs, Morales and Sheza Happy Girl took the lead down the stretch and held off Your Inheritance and jockey Jose Ortiz.

“It feels great,” Morales said. “I am very happy.”

Morales, who rode four winners in Panama, came to the U.S. in October and has been working in the mornings for trainer Claudio Gonzalez. Sheza Happy Girl, who went off 17-1 and paid $37.20 to win, was the eleventh mount for Morales in the U.S. n

Corona Bolt Lives Up to Sugar Bowl Favoritism

Corona Bolt ran to his 1-2 odds Dec. 26 at Fair Grounds as the Florida-bred colt dominated the $97,000 Sugar Bowl with a sixand-three-quarters-length victory against five other 2-year-olds going six furlongs.

Trained by Brad Cox for Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Stables LLC, Corona Bolt is now undefeated in two starts after winning his first career race by a length against special weight company at Churchill Downs on Nov. 19.

Corona Bolt went right to the front from post three in the Sugar Bowl where jockey Florent Geroux guided him through a quarter-mile in :22.24 while a length in front of Late September and Machine Gun Man together in second. Corona Bolt continued to lead around the far turn and stretched his margin to a lengthand-a-half through a half-mile in :45.92 as Distorted Pro, Late September and fellow Florida-bred Toddchero gave chase in a joint second while three across the track at the top of the stretch.

Corona Bolt was never challenged in the run to the finish and galloped under the wire in 1:09.96 on the fast track with Distorted Pro second and just a nose in front of Toddchero in third. Late September, Alto Road and Machine Gun Man completed the order of finish.

“When you’re a heavy favorite like this, you try not to think too much as long as the horse cooperates and breaks well,” Geroux said. “So when he broke sharp, I just tried to take command and

was able to take control all the way to the wire.”

Corona Bolt paid $3 to win and now has $102,000 in earnings from his two starts.

Cox said the Sugar Bowl performance may lead to increased competition.

“We’ll see how he comes out of this,” Cox said, “but based on today, I think he deserves the opportunity to try two turns. He’s a nice colt. He’s got enough scope about himself. There was no intent on necessarily being on the lead. We thought he’d let him break and settle into the race with natural speed and found himself on the lead.”

Corona Bolt is by Bolt d’Oro out of Stormbeforethecalm, by Quiet American and was bred in Florida by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield Sales Agency Inc. and Etarip Stable. Summerfield consigned Corona Bolt to the 2020 Keeneland November Sale as a weanling and sold him for $225,000 to Vallone Racing.

A half-sister to stakes-winners Cool Catomine, Wild Catomine; and stakes-placed runners Crowns Dynasty, Goldmine Cat and Master Spy; Stormbeforethecalm is also the dam of Toronto Cup-winning Florida-bred Proven Strategies. With Corona Bolt’s victory in the Sugar Bowl, Stormbeforethecalm has two black type winners from three starters.

The Vanlangendonck’s purchased Stormbeforethecalm for $15,000 at the 2016 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.

Toddchero is now stakes-placed in all five of his starts against black type company, coming at four different tracks. The son of Bucchero has been second to Mazing Mark in the $100,000 Jean Lafitte at Delta Downs and second to Tyler’s Tribe in the $100,000 Prairie Gold Juvenile at Prairie Meadows. He was also third in both the $75,000 Kip Deville and $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park. n

Dr. John Peterson Dies

Peterson Smith lost one of its’ founders on Dec. 25 with the passing of Dr. John Peterson.

Along with Dr. Johnny Mac Smith, Peterson started the practice in 1981, and continued practicing until 2017. Through the years, he had a profound impact on the practice, with his bold vision shaping it into what it is today. Dr. Peterson’s significant and lasting contributions to the equine veterinary industry are many. None more important than the role his leadership and mentorship played in the lives and careers of the numerous veterinarians and support staff privileged to work alongside him throughout his career. His dedicated work will be remembered by his many clients and the equine industry as a whole. n

Nicholas Palmer Saddles First Winner

Nicholas Palmer celebrated the first victory of his training career Dec. 30 at Gulfstream Park after saddling Bad Henry for a five-and-a-quarter-length romp in the day’s second race.

The 30-year-old native of Jupiter, Fla., achieved his career milestone with a horse bred and owned by his parents, Teresa and David Palmer, long-time prominent owners in South Florida.

“It feels amazing. It’s really special. I’m happy it was with a homebred,” Palmer said.

Bad Henry, a 2-year-old Florida-bred son of Good Samaritan, won for the first time in four career starts in the $12,500 maiden claiming at a mile as the longest price in the six-horse field.

Bad Henry paid $29.40 to win.

Although he grew up in Thoroughbred racing, Palmer didn’t always have a goal to become a trainer.

“It’s not really what I always wanted to do. I had another job in film, doing lighting. I took a hiatus and went to the farm and saw a 2-year-olds-in-training sale and it piqued my interest more than

racing did when I was a kid,” Palmer said after living and working on an Ocala farm for eight years. “I just loved it and never left the farm. I didn’t go back to my job.”

Palmer left the farm to work for a few prominent trainers before taking out his license earlier this year.

“I worked as a foreman for Danny Gargan three years ago just for the Saratoga meet. Following that I was working for Saffie Joseph as a foreman and then an assistant at Palm Meadows,” Palmer said. “I also worked for Armando De La Cerda for a while, as well.” n

Veteran Drafted Noses Out Gravesend Victory

Dublin Fjord Stables LLC, Racepoint Stables, Kevin D. Hilbert and Thomas E. O’Keefe’s 8-year-old Florida-bred Drafted won his fourth stakes of the year and added to his million-dollar bankroll with a nose victory ahead of runner-up Little Vic in the $130,950 Gravesend at Aqueduct Dec. 30.

Earlier in 2022, Drafted won the Grade 3 Toboggan in the mud at Aqueduct in February, the Grade 3 Runhappy at Belmont Park in May and the $106,000 Mr. Prospector at Monmouth Park in June.

Drafted is trained by David P. Duggan and improved on his third-place finish in last year’s Gravesend behind winner Pete’s Play and second-place finisher Stan the Man. That was his second start in the United States after returning from Meydan Race Course in the United Arab Emirates where he was a multiple Group 3 winner.

by Jebel Ali Port, both at Meydan Race Course in 2019 and the 2018 Garhoud Spring Spornsored by Al Tayer Motors at Meydan.

Last throughout in the Gravesend this year as longshot Bezos set fractions of :22.58 and :45.38 while a length-and-a-half in front of Little Vic, Drafted and jockey Luis Rodriguez Castro wore down Bezos, Morello and Little Vic in deep stretch to win in the final jump and finish in 1:10.69 on the fast track.

Morello was another length back in third followed by Bezos and Three Two Zone. Amundson, Beren, Greeley and Ben, Repo Rocks, Smooth B and Synthesis were all scratched. Beren opted for the $100,000 Dave’s Friend at Laurel where he was second to Factor it In. Repo Rocks, Smooth B and Synthesis are entered for the Jan. 4 Blitzen at Parx Racing.

“I didn’t think we’d won,” Duggan said. “I thought second wasn’t a bad run. But when I watched the slow-mo [replay] I thought, my God, I think we got up. I’m delighted. It set up perfectly. I’m delighted for the horse and delighted for the connections. He’s a cool, old horse.”

Duggan said he scratched Drafted out of the Grade 3 Fall Highweight on Nov. 26 at Aqueduct to give him additional time between races. Drafted had finished fifth in the Grade 3 Bold Ruler won by Runninsonofagun during the Belmont at Big A meet on Oct. 29 in his previous start.

“He’s an older horse. You can’t be going out drinking every weekend – you can relate, you know,” Duggan said with a laugh. “Once he gets his freshening, he’s back and he can go at it again. He’s a famous horse at this stage. They’ll write books about him.”

Rodriquez Castro talked about Drafted and his late-running talent.

“He always closes really hard,” Rodriguez Castro said. “When I’m at the quarter-pole that close, he always gives me a big effort at the end. We won at Monmouth the same way. Thank God today he did the same. He always tries hard at the end and we got the job done.”

Drafted will now likely turn his attention to a title defense in the Grade 3 Toboggan on Jan. 28 at Aqueduct, a race he will contest for the third time in his career.

“It’s the next thing,” Duggan said. “He’s got the freshening and he’s got the momentum right now. That will be the goal.”

Drafted is by the late Solera Farm stallion Field Commission out of Keep the Profit, by Darn that Alarm. Bred by John Foster, Barbara Hooker and Field Commission Partnership, Drafted now has 10 wins, three seconds and four thirds in 33 career starts with earnings of $1,157,443.

Keep the Profit has seven winners from nine starters with Drafted as her only black type winner.

Drafted paid $14 to win. n

Maryquitecontrary Continues Winning Steak With Impressive Rampart Victory

Maryquitecontrary took her winning streak to another level Dec. 31 as the Florida-bred filly captured her fourth consecutive race and is now five-for-six lifetime with her victory in the $125,000 Rampart at Gulfstream Park

A 3-year-old daughter of Double Diamond Farm’s First Dude, Maryquitecontrary won the $65,000 Sheer Drama as the only sophomore against older state-bred fillies and mares two starts back, winning by a neck over seven furlongs. She made the one-mile Rampart an easier task, winning by three-and-a-half lengths ahead of Colorful Mischief in second. The Rampart was also her first start since capturing an overnight handicap against older fillies and mares going seven furlongs at Gulfstream on Oct. 16.

Zainalarab set the pace in the Rampart, leading by two lengths through quarter-mile fractions of :23.85 and :46.87 as Music City Star trailed in second with daylight on Colorful Mischief racing in third. Meanwhile, Panici had Maryquitecontrary racing about six lengths off the lead in fifth down the backstretch before sending her six-wide around the far turn behind Allworthy, who was also making a late run.

Allworthy took over after six furlongs in 1:11.11 with Music City Star and Maryquitecontrary launching also their bids to the outside.

Maryquitecontrary shot to the front in the stretch and went on to finish in 1:36.78 on the fast track with Colorful Mischief crossing under the wire three lengths faster than Allworth in third. Music City Star, Zainalarab, Soul of an Angel and Indicia complet ed the order of finish. Illiogami was scratched.

Trained by Joseph Catanese III for breeder Rodney G. Lundock, Maryquitecontrary has now earned $220,780 from her six starts. She is out of Mary Kate ’n Kelly, by Mecke and was ridden to vic tory by Luca Panici.

Mary Kate ‘n Kelly has four winners from five starters with Maryquitecontrary as her only stakes winner. She was bred to Adios Charlie in 2022.

“She always shows improvement, especially today with the mile race,” Panici said. “She’s an excellent horse. She’s always improving. She was kind of green at first.”

“Mary is Mary. She shows up every time,” said winning trainer Joe Catanese III.

Her only loss came when second to Last Leaf in the $75,000 Azalea in her second career start at Gulfstream in July.

Four longtime Peterson Smith Equine Hospital + Complete Care veterinarians are retiring, with a special celebration in mid-January. As a sad note, however, Dr. John Peterson (one of the co-founders of the practice more than 40 years ago) passed away on Christmas night.

“This will put a damper on the retirement celebrations, but we are all honored to have worked for him,” Dr. Donnie Slone (one of the retiring four), said.

Dr. Matthews was born in Reno, Nev., went to college at University of Nevada at Reno and veterinary school at Colorado State University.

“In the winter of 1981, just before I graduated, I met Dr. [John] Peterson and Dr. [Johnny Mac] Smith, who were solo practitioners at that time. They planned to form a partnership and offered me a job. They signed their partnership document and I signed my employment agreement on the same day in August of 1981,” Matthews said.

At that time, there was a large Thoroughbred population around Ocala and a few other breeds—many large farms, breeding and training facilities—and not many veterinarians.

“We were extremely busy. The plan was to build a surgical and medicine facility, hire surgeons, internists, medical staff, and build a clinic. There were only a couple small clinics in that area, and no board certified surgeon or internists,” Matthews said.

By 1982 they’d hired Dr. Kevin Hahn.

“We opened our clinic in 1984 and were so busy that we began hiring one or two more veterinarians every year,” Matthews said. “After we reached about 20, hiring slowed, but we are still hiring new ones today. We were always very busy but it was also very gratifying.

“I think we became successful because we were willing to work hard; all the veterinarians who came to join us had a very strong work ethic. We were able to tackle problems, work with many farms and generate a large footprint.”

Matthews said trust among and long lasting relationships with clients was key to the success of Peterson Smith.

“Many clients became friends and we had lasting relationships. I worked for many people for 20 and 30 years or more.”

Peterson Smith became a very successful surgical facility.

“Dr. Slone took on starting the hospital,” Matthews continued. “He was the first surgeon we hired and he hired interns under him.

“It grew quickly because he was a very

proficient surgeon. In my mind, he is the best equine surgeon of his generation—which is saying a great deal, because there are some really good ones. He did everything from colic and other soft tissue surgeries to orthopedics and had a great success rate. He gained the trust of the community.

“Dr. Hahn was an ambulatory veterinarian like myself. Dr. Tim Lynch is the other veterinarian retiring with us. He joined us later and came to us from the Miami racetrack, from Tom Brokken’s practice there. He is also a board-certified surgeon and has been very successful.”

Matthews did ambulatory work when he joined the practice in 1981.

“We did everything—lameness, medical patients, neonates, delivered foals, and whatever else was needed.

“I always enjoyed reproductive work the most and kept leaning that way, with a large reproductive practice. For many years, I managed about 700 to 800 mares, their babies and all the yearlings that came with that. I also enjoyed stallion work and did a lot of the stallion fertility work in the Ocala area for a long time,” he says.

“In 1999, after practicing for 19 years, we opened a reproduction clinic south of Ocala, called the Peterson Smith Advanced Fertility Center, specializing in reproductive work. We did embryo transfer, stallion and mare fertility, and now also do in-vitro work and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection).

“This facility has grown from just being me, and then me and an intern, to four fulltime veterinarians.”

Matthews did this along with ambulatory work for about a decade but in recent years focused on reproductive work at this facility.

“It has grown, and now produces about six times the revenue it did when we started it in 1999,” he said.

“We’ve had a lot of good years here at Peterson Smith and many veterinarians have come through over the years as interns and associates. We have expanded our services a lot and now have

30 veterinarians,” he says.

Matthews is also quick to point out that the practice has not only had a beneficial impact on the horse industry in Florida, but in other states as well.

“We get referrals from Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas, Maryland, New York, Maine and New Jersey,” he said. “We are very proud of what we do and try to serve our clients well. We work hard, care about our patients, advocate for our clients and this has helped us build a strong veterinary business.

“It has been a great career for me and I owe Dr. Peterson and Dr. Smith a lot for giving me an opportunity.

I have enjoyed the relationships with all the veterinarians I practice with. It’s fun to be successful and to have grown this much, although that came with many challenges and much hard work.

“I was pleased to spend the past 40 years with Dr. Hahn and Dr. Slone and part of that time with Dr. Lynch. It’s been a good group and I am excited about the future of this practice. We have good veterinarians coming in to replace us who are already doing an excellent job and will continue our tradition of excellence. I am excited about the future of Peterson Smith; it will go forward strongly and that will be fun to watch,” he said.

“I owe a lot to all the veterinarians I worked with for 40 years who helped and advised me. And I hope I was also a small measure of help to them. It’s been a great team. We survived in this business because we all worked toward the business first; our personal agendas came second.”

Matthews plans to stay busy after retirement. He breeds and raises Thoroughbreds and commercial cattle—mostly Angus with his wife Karen.

“I want to do more traveling and work on my farm. I haven’t been able to pay enough attention to my own animals because I’ve always been paying attention to other people’s horses,” Matthews said. “Like the shoemaker’s kids having no shoes—I plan to make more shoes and spend more time with my own animals.”

Dr. Hahn, who was born in Wyoming and grew up in Colorado, was one of the first veterinarians hired by the practice. His family moved to Fort Collins, Colo., when he was young —and he enjoyed team roping and skiing. He attended vet school at Colorado State University.

“Dr. Matthews was a classmate of mine and we both graduated in 1981,” Hahn said. “I did an internship at Littleton Large Animal Clinic in Denver for a year, then came to Ocala to work with Dr. Peterson and Dr. Smith in 1982, where Dr. Matthews was already working.

“At that time, the four of us were ambulatory practitioners, working out of Dr. Peterson’s Thoroughbred stud barn.

“In 1983 we built the clinic and Dr. Slone joined us as a surgeon.

“My role has been mainly lameness and reproduction. We have been fortunate, adding associates and increasing the size of the hospital.

When the advanced fertility clinic opened, Hahn remained at the hospital and worked in the field despite his expertise in reproduction.

“Dr. Smith retired in the early 1990’s. We brought in Dr. Russell and several others over the years, including Dr. Lynch, who is retiring with us at this time. The practice had its ups and downs with the economy, but the horse industry here has been strong. This enabled us to continue to grow even through bad times.

“The horse industry has changed, however, over the years. When we first started, our clients were mainly large Thoroughbred farms, some small Thoroughbred farms and a few other breeds. The Thoroughbred industry here has changed. We don’t do as much reproductive work and are working more with horses in training—though there is still a fair amount of breeding here,” Hahn said.

“Many good people have come through this practice, both lay staff and vet staff. I will miss all of them. The practice is in good

shape and will keep doing even bigger and better things,” Hahn said.

“I have slowed my practice here over the past few years so retirement won’t be a drastic change. I will miss going to the farms and working with the clients.

“My family will stay here, however. We don’t have any plans to leave. I have a lot of catching up to do on our own farm. There have been many things I’ve let go over the years and there will be a lot of work to be done there. I enjoy doing things around our farm.”

For the first time in 42 years he will be able to travel in the spring—since this was always the busiest time in the practice, doing reproduction work.

“I will be able do some things I was never able to do and travel with my wife and family. My wife and I have been married 35 years. She was two years behind me in vet school; she retired last summer as dean of students at the University of Florida vet school. She has been really busy also these past 35 years.”

“I have two boys in college. Tanner goes to North Florida and Colter goes to FSU. We also have a 13-year-old daughter, Eva Mae, who is in 8th grade and ready to start high school. We adopted her from China, and she’s a blessing.”

On the family farm, Hahn raises Corriente cattle.

“These are Mexican cattle, mainly used for roping. I grew up riding horses and roping,” Hahn said. “I started team roping as a boy, then started professional rodeo when I was 14. My father put on the largest jackpot roping in Colorado back in the ‘80s. Today I raise Corriente roping cattle just for fun. I’ve had horses my whole life, until recently. That was my interest in going to vet school, to become a horse vet.” t

Donnie E. Slone Jr., DVM, MS, DACVS

Dr. Slone graduated from the University of Missouri in 1976 with a veterinary degree, then went to Auburn for his internship and residency to become certified in veterinary surgery. While at Auburn University, he became acquainted with Dr. Reuben Brawner, who was instrumental in Sloan coming to Ocala.

“Dr. Brawner was one of the early patriarchs of the equine veterinary family here in Ocala— and a legend in his time. He was not only very smart but also a really nice guy. I knew him because when I was at Auburn doing my residency, my mentor was Dr. Tom Vaughan. He suggested I come to Ocala in the fall to attend the Ocala Equine Conference. I always came on Friday night and the meeting started at noon on Saturday. I’d make rounds with Dr. Brawner Saturday morning and go to several places,” Slone recalled on how he became familiar with Ocala.

“During my seven years at Auburn, he and I had a number of conversations because [Dr. Brawner] knew I was interested in private practice,” Sloan said. “At that time, this was unusual. Most people who got board certified in surgery in those days stayed at a university. I told him Ocala looked like it was ready for some good hospitals and surgery facilities.

“In December 1982, the American Association of Equine Practitioners meeting was in Atlanta. I was studying for my boards, but decided to go to that meeting to see what I could learn. I ran into Dr. Brawner and he asked if I was still

interested in being part of a private practice and coming to Ocala. He told me John Peterson and Johnny Mac Smith were building a hospital and looking for someone to join them.

“I knew Dr. Johnny Mac Smith; I’d run into him a few times already. Dr. Brawner introduced me to John, who told me they wanted a boarded surgeon to join them. I was taking the boards in February of 1983 and as soon as I got word that I passed them, I called John and set up an interview with him—and they hired me.”

Slone moved his family to Ocala in June of 1983 and his official start day was July 1, just days before the hospital opened.

“The grand opening of the hospital was July 10, 1983. Dr. Matthews and Dr. Hahn were here already, doing ambulatory work. The hospital still wasn’t ready to do surgery when it opened but I was helping get the finish work done, and equipment purchased. We did our first surgery a week or two after the Grand Opening celebration.”

When Slone came, there were five veterinarians in the practice and it grew from there.

“I was doing colics, orthopedics, sick foals, eye patients, took all the x-rays, etc. As time went on, we hired other people to do some of those things. I became more specialized and mostly did racehorse and sport horse surgeries—mainly fractures, arthroscopy, upper respiratory surgeries, etc. In the beginning it was almost all racehorses. Over the years this changed; today about half of what we do involves other breeds and other disciplines. Some of our veterinarians now work with more sport horses than racehorses. But most of what I do is still centered around the racing industry.”

After retirement, Slone will continue to help with the transition to the new surgeons.

“I will make my transition a step at a time. I don’t have any concrete plans but will continue doing things I’ve enjoyed.

“I’ve been a Boy Scout leader for 35 years and I am active in the church and will keep doing that. I try to stay fit and do triathlons. I didn’t do any through COVID, but I did a triathlon this

past October. I do the swim-bike-run several times a week and will probably have more time to do that.

“I will probably still help out here at the hospital. We have two new surgeons and I will help where I’m needed. I don’t mind consulting, but will let them do the surgery,” Slone says.

“A person can’t do all these things in a vacuum, by yourself. Surgery requires a great team. I have always had interns, resi-

Dr. Lynch graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1991 and did an internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., and a surgical residency at Michigan State University from 1992 to 1995.

“Then I moved to Ohio for five years and worked at a practice there, as Staff Surgeon at Equine Specialty Hospital in Cleveland,” Lynch said.

He became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1999.

“Someone I knew was in Fort Lauderdale, working at Tiegland, Franklin and Brokken and asked if I’d like to join that practice,” Lynch said. “We moved to Fort Lauderdale for three years and I became their staff surgeon from 2000 to 2002, then saw there was an opening here.”

He joined Peterson Smith in 2002 to head the sports medicine program and became a Partner in 2007, buying out Dr. Peterson’s share.

Lynch’s clinical interests include lameness, scintigraphy, performance profiling and gastrointestinal surgery. He has been doing arthroscopy, upper airway surgery, emergency colic surgery, and dealing with sports medicine injuries—doing bone scans, imaging and lameness.

“It’s been really busy here, but we have three new people—including Andrew Smith, who did his residency and got his PhD from UF and joined us in August,” Lynch said. “We also have Marco Perez, who did his residency at UC-Davis. A new medicine person, Dr. Lisa Edwards—who also did her residency at U-C

dents and technical staff who were part of that team. The practice has supported me and referring veterinarians have supported me.

“I have always had my family behind me. I have two daughters, who are busy physicians, and a wife who has been by my side for 48 years. I always called her the quartermaster. She made sure the family was fed and clothed and got where they were supposed to be.”

Davis—is coming to work with Dr. Clark. Lisa started January 1 but the others already started and are doing well. There will be a continuity of care.

“This was one of the first practices that provided full service and there have been many good people go through here. We four are the first to mass retire. We have good people who will take over. Some who have been here a long time became giants in their field and are very well known.

“It’s been a great time here and I will miss everyone and all the horses and their owners and trainers. I made many good friends. I will certainly miss the place, but probably not the hours,” Lynch said.

“I am not yet sure what I will do in retirement. I will probably travel and do some surgical locums—going to various places for a week or two, working when I want to and doing what I want to do. There is always a need for surgeons, so I will help out here and there,” he says.

“We will probably spend some time back in Madison, Wisconsin where my wife and I went to school, then see what develops. We will keep busy, do some traveling, and enjoy the next chapter of our lives.” TFH

FOAL? WILL SHE

Gestation in mares is estimated at about 340 days (roughly 11 months) but that number is just an average, since mares can easily foal as much as 3 weeks earlier or later than this expected date. Normal gestation is considered to be 340 to 345 days, plus or minus 12 days. Gestation length is also affected by genetics and season of the year. Mares foaling in winter or early spring tend to go 10 to 15 days longer than mares foaling in late spring or summer.

Since mares can be so unpredictable in gestation length (which may be anywhere between 320 to 360 days and still be considered normal), breeders often try to find ways to more closely pinpoint when a certain mare might foal. Dr. Ahmed Tibary, Professor of Theriogenology, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Washington State University, says it is important to examine the mare periodically to see how she is changing and preparing for parturition. “Mares are quite variable in their signs of preparation for foaling, depending on whether they are older broodmares that have had several foals, or maiden mares. These signs can be quite subtle in some mares, and difficult to discern. They tell you that the mare is getting ready, but they don’t narrow down the time of foaling to an actual day,” he says.

“We talk about relaxation of the pelvic ligaments (and a softening of the muscles next to the tail head and vulva), elongation of the vulva, mammary gland development, etc. Relaxation and enlargement of the vulva usually occurs within a few hours of foaling.” These are all things you should look at, to make sure the mare is progressing normally in her preparation for foaling.

All the signs of impending foaling are variable. “A mare may start some changes as much as three or four weeks before foaling and then become obviously more intense during the last two weeks. Changes in the mammary gland may take place closer to parturition in some mares than others. The sign most people look for is waxing (a bit of dry colostrum that accumulates on the end of the teat), since this usually doesn’t occur until the last two to three days,” says Tibary. The mare might have a large udder for two or three weeks but generally doesn’t wax until about 24 to 48 hours before she foals.

“It is important to realize that we are talking about probability, rather a definite time frame, when we see a mare waxing. About 90% of mares will foal within 24 to 48 hours, but some mares wax longer. A mare might wax very briefly or for several days. One year we had a mare here at the hospital that waxed for nearly a week. That might be due to being in the hospital, however, where there is a lot more going on—and if the mare doesn’t find a quiet

time she may delay foaling,” he explains.

“All of these signs (relaxation of pelvic ligaments, elongation of the vulva, larger udder, and waxing) are good indications that the mare is progressing normally in her pregnancy, as long as she seems fine and remains healthy. For monitoring, and for the purpose of making sure that someone is there in case there is trouble, however—particularly for maiden mares or mares that have had problems in the past—we need something a little more precise. This is where most of the research has been focused over the past 40 years--trying to find more precise ways of predicting when a mare will foal.”

MONITORING METHODS – Some monitoring technique are electronic and others involve chemical methods such as checking mammary secretions. “Most of the electronic techniques are triggered by the second stage of labor, and in some instances these alarms might be a little too late, since mares foal so quickly. The mare could foal before you are able to get out to the barn,” says Tibary.

These signaling devices can be useful, however, and include products like Foal-Alert, Birth Alert, Foal Alarm, etc. These are attached in various places (such as on the halter, or stitched into the mare’s vulva) and send a signal when the mare lies down flat or when the vulva lips are spread apart. These devices are designed to notify the owner, farm manager, or foaling attendant that the mare is in second stage labor. Some systems can notify multiple

people. A signal is transmitted from the device to a receiver that sounds an alarm, notifies a pager, or calls a telephone number.

“One device sends a signal based on the position of the mare— such as if she lies flat for a long time. Another type of device sends a signal when the vulva stretches and pulls the sensors apart. This one is only activated when something is passing through the vulva opening (water bag, or the amnion sac and front feet of the foal). These devices can be helpful, but can’t fully replace visual observation,” he says.

Other electronic methods for monitoring include closed-circuit TV or webcam, which can be useful because you can watch the mare from your house or smart phone. You can see her preparing to foal (signs of early labor) before the other types of monitoring would kick in. The methods that allow continuous monitoring enable us to see behavioral changes in the mare, and clues that tell when she is about to foal.

“Here at our hospital we constantly watch (on webcam) all the mares that are being monitored for foaling, particularly those that have had a difficult pregnancy. The webcam presents an advantage because you are watching the mare from a distance, without disturbing her.” The presence of someone nearby may cause a mare to become worried and put off foaling.

The other category for monitoring includes several biochemical tests. “Recent advances have been made in this area. Re-

search has made a lot of progress with these tests since they were first used in the early 1980’s. These tests continue to be refined and improved,” says Tibary.

The traditional test is based on changes in electrolytes in secretions of the mammary gland. “If we want to do a full monitoring (which can be done at a hospital lab) we can look at the calcium, sodium and potassium levels. The real trigger in knowing when the mare is going to foal, however, is when we see the level of sodium and the level of potassium invert. At first the sodium would be very high, then as the mare gets close to foaling the sodium level would be lower than the potassium. That point of inversion, when sodium becomes lower concentration than potassium, tells us the mare is within about 24 hours of foaling,” he explains. At this point you could intensify visual monitoring.

“There are other tests that focus primarily on the calcium, which is also a good indicator of imminent foaling. Calcium in the mammary secretions progressively increases in concentration as the mare gets closer to foaling. There are many types of test strips commercially available. Those use the same principle as measuring water hardness, to identify the concentration of calcium,” he says.

“The initial studies looked at probability of a mare to give birth within a certain number of hours, based on calcium concentration. These studies showed that when the calcium content

of mammary gland secretions reaches 200 parts per million the mare has about 50% chance of going into labor within 24 hours, about 85% chance of going into labor within 48 hours, and about 95% chance of going into labor within 72 hours. This principal is used with the commercial strip tests,” says Tibary.

“You collect a small amount of mammary gland secretion, add a reagent, and dip a strip into the mixture. That strip contains a reagent that reacts with the other one by showing a change of color. The strip has about five squares and you look to see how many of those squares change from green to red. The more squares that change, the more likely the mare will foal within a certain time frame. If all five squares have changed, the mare has high likelihood of foaling within the next 12 to 24 hours,” he explains.

“Another method we are using in combination with the calcium strip test looks at the pH of the secretions. Research in recent years has shown that the pH of the mammary gland secretions is highly correlated with the electrolyte changes. When the pH reaches 6.5 or lower, there’s high likelihood the mare will foal within the next 24 hours. These two tests, combined, add a little more precision. However, not all mares will drop their pH in the same way; some can drop quickly while others drop more slowly. Some may even foal while the pH is still more alkaline,” he says.

“In our hospital, we use all monitoring methods. We use the camera for continual monitoring, and the calcium test—sometimes with the full panoply of electrolytes. Since we already have the secretions for that test, we may also take a quick pH measurement which can be done with the typical pH paper (as for a litmus

test). This gives us a very good monitoring system,” he says.

Not all mares follow the book, however. “We’ve had mares that remained very high in calcium on the calcium test for up to five days before foaling. Probably one reason they may go longer is that you’ve changed the routine of the mare. She may put off foaling, since mares can delay labor for 24 hours or more,” says Tibary.

“These tests are very predictable at home, in the mare’s familiar environment. All these changes in mammary gland secretions are not as useful, however, if the pregnancy is not normal or if mammary gland development is not normal. When we have a high risk pregnancy, we can’t rely on this test. For example, mares that have had a problem and have gone too long, or don’t have normal development of the mammary gland, or have a lot of edema, etc. won’t have a reliable test. In mares with fescue toxicosis, for instance (and lack of udder development), these tests will not work.”

Some maiden mares, or a mare that doesn’t come to her milk until after she foals, or mares that have leaked milk prior to foaling may also throw the test off. “Mares that have been treated for placentitis, or mares that have undergone surgery for colic during pregnancy or have had other stresses or disturbances of the normal hormonal changes will not have a reliable test. Then we must fall back on watching them closely and using electronic devices,” he says. TFH
