Florida FOCUS Cookie Dough Finally Gets Her Graded Stakes Win in Royal Delta

Florida-bred Cookie Dough

LAUREN KING PHOTO

After spending 2019 finishing in the money against some of the best sophomore fillies in South Florida and New York without a victory, Florida-bred Cookie Dough finally broke through to land a convincing win

in the Grade 3 Royal Delta Stakes on a rainy afternoon at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 15. Her 2019 past performance lines included second-place finishes in the Grade 2 Davona

by Brock Sheridan Dale, Grade 2 Victory Ride and Grade 3 Rampart with third-place finishes in both the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks and the Grade 2 Black Eyed Susan. That resume made the Arindel homebred the 8-5 favorite in the $150,000 Royal Delta and she did not disappoint while winning by a length-and-a-half with jockey Paco Lopez aboard. It was also her first start under young rising star trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Breaking from post six on the sloppy and sealed track, Cookie Dough impatiently fought Lopez and his attempt to keep her running at a reasonable pace around the clubhouse turn and down the backstretch while a few paths outside of longshot Tweeting, who led by a half-length through honest fractions of :23.36 for the first two furlongs and the half-mile in :46.86. Passing the five-sixteenth pole, Lopez gave the 4-year-old dark bay filly her cue and she cruised to the front as Tweeting regressed on the rail and Golden Award began to chal-

lenge from her three-wide position. Moving into the stretch, Cookie Dough had a clear lead but drifted out a bit further as she raced past the three-eighths pole a length in front while Queen Nekia cut the corner and moved into contention on the inside. Golden Award fought valiantly to make up ground on the outside but Cookie Dough would not surrender and won by three-quarters-of-a-length. Golden Award kept second, a nose better than Queen Nekia in third. They were followed by Tweeting, Coach Rocks and Restless Rider and the final time for the mileand-one-sixteenth was 1:43.57. Cookie Dough paid $5.20 to win. “I’m very proud of her,” Joseph said. “She came from [trainer] Stan Gold. Her form spoke for itself. We just hoped we could get her to run as good as Stan because Stan did a great job. “[Rating in second], that was Paco [Lopez]. He came into the paddock and said he wanted to sit second. I said, ‘Paco, don’t

premeditate it. Play the break.’ That was a good place to sit. She got a little tough. She’s tough in the morning.” The Royal Delta was the third career win for Cookie Dough, who won both Susan’s Girl and My Dear Girl divisions of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes as a 2-year-old. By Arindel’s Florida-based stallion Brethren out of Brooke’s Valentine, by Fusaichi Pegasus, Cookie Dough has now earned $521,220 from 13 career starts. Brooke’s Valentine has also produced Juvenile Sprint third-place finisher Poe and was bred to Brethren in 2019. ■

Firenze Fire Removes Seven Furlong Nuisance With General George Score

Florida-bred Firenze Fire

JIM MCCUE PHOTOP

In addition to jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., Florida-bred Firenze Fire also carried a metaphorical monkey on his back in the seven furlong General George Stakes (Grade 3) at Laurel Park on Feb 15. A graded stakes-winner at six furlongs and at a mile, Firenze Fire was 0-for-3 at the seven furlong distance including a second-place finish to future champion sprinter Mitole in the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga Race Course in August and a third-place finish behind win-

ner Promises Fulfilled in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkins at Saratoga in 2018. He was also fourth in the seven furlong Hopeful Stakes (G1) in his second career start. But it all came together in the $250,000 General George against six other 4-year-olds and older as Firenze Fire won his third straight stakes and the fourth graded stakes of his career with a seemingly effortless four-length margin.

Firenze Fire shot from post six and had daylight on his rivals running out of the seven furlong chute before Fire Plug Stakes-winner Honor the Fleet and recent optional claimingwinner Factor It In took over on the inside after two furlongs in :23.58. As they went around the turn, Honor the Fleet and Factor raced on the lead together through a :46.90 half-mile with Firenze Fire cruising from just to their outside in third. Past the quarter-pole, Firenze Fire galloped to the lead with little urging from Ortiz, who looked back with confidence to gauge potential challengers. However, by the time Ortiz again looked ahead, Firenze Fire was in full flight and kicking away from the others, who were all six abreast in second. With only one right-handed urging from Ortiz inside the eighth-pole, Firenze Fire continued to draw clear and galloped under the wire in 1:22.38 on the fast track as Threes Over Deuces finished second, a neck better than Still Having Fun in third. They were followed in order by Lone Rock, Tiz He the One, Factor It In and Honor the Fleet. Owned by Ron Lombardi’s Mr. Amore Stable, who also bred Firenze Fire under that moniker, the 5-year-old horse now has 10 wins from 24 career starts and career revenues of $1,841,750. “He broke so good out of the gate like always, and we didn’t want to go to the lead, so I tried to stay away from there and tried to settle, and he relaxed so well. I just sat right there and relaxed and when I asked him, he just took off,” Ortiz said. “I was confident the whole time, to be honest. He broke running and I felt like a winner all the time.” A winner of the $200,000 Fabulous Strike Stakes at Penn National on Nov. 27 and the $105,850 Gravesend Stakes on Dec. 22 at Aqueduct in his previous two starts, Firenze Fire has provided the Mountain Lakes, N.J.resident Lombardi thrills from the start. “It’s a dream come true. It’s unbelievable. He got us to the Kentucky Derby. We finished 11th but just to get to the Derby was truly amazing. A lot of people questioned my desire to get there, saying I was pushing the

horse, but my feeling is anytime you can get to the Kentucky Derby you have to take it,” owner Ron Lombardi said. “He’s been a great horse. He’s solid. He rebounds well.” Firenze Fire also won the Grade 2 Champagne Stakes and the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes as a 2-year-old before winning the Grade 3 Dwyer, Grade 3 Gallant Bob and the Jerome Stakes as a sophomore. In addition to the Fabulous Strike and Gravesend, he also won the Runhappy Stakes at Belmont last year. By Poseidon’s Warrior, Firenze Fire is the first foal out of the Langfuhr mare My Every Wish, who also has one other winner and an unraced yearling, who is a full-brother to Firenze Fire. She was bred to Speightstown in 2019. Firenze Fire returned $3 for the General George victory as the 1-2 favorite. ■

Lady’s Island Wins Again in Minaret at Tampa Bay Duke and Paul Matties’ Matties Racing Stable LLC and Rick Averill’s Averill Racing LLC’s Lady’s Island returned to her winning ways right on cue on Feb. 15 as the 6-year-old mare won the $50,000 Minaret Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. The six furlong Minaret featured a field of 10 older fillies and mares going six furlongs and provided the Florida-bred mare with her sixth win in her last seven tries. Just previous to the Minaret, Lady’s Island was second to Florida-bred Extravagant Kid in the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 18 to break a five-race winning streak. The streak had started with a nine-length romp in the $75,000 Nicole’s Dream Stakes at Gulfstream Park on June 9 and also included wins in the $75,000 Turf Sprint at Gulfstream on June 29 and the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream on Dec. 14. She was claimed by Averill for $16,000 out of an optional claiming race third-place finish on June 22, 2018 at Gulfstream and has since won 10 of 13 starts. Although Lady’s Island stumbled at the start of the Minaret from post three, she and THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2020 9

1 second choice Into Chocolate in second with 77-1 longshot Caught Up In You third. Suzie’ssteppinout, Lovesick, Molto Bella, Sean’s Idea, Boujie Girl, Midtown Rose and Puntsville completed the order of finish. Lady’s Island paid $4.20 as the evenmoney favorite. Lady’s Island was trained by Gerald Bennett for the Minaret and has now won half of her 28 starts with earnings of $434,195. She has also been named the 2019 Claiming Horse of the Year by the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. As for Jaramillo, he said despite the poor start, he was never in doubt. “He knows what she can do, and she did [the first quarter-mile] in :21 3/5,” said Jaramillo’s 18-year-old son, Emisael, acting as an interpreter. “He couldn’t hold her because she’s so fast.” 10 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2020

“It was amazing,” said Bennett, who rarely uses that word. “She had to get started all over again. She’s a super nice filly and I’m just happy to win after such a bad start. She loves this racetrack and I’m happy for Rich [Averill] because he puts a lot of money in the game. You need these kind of days.” Lady’s Island is by Solera Farm stallion Greatness and is out of Broadway Martha, by Broad Brush. She was bred in Florida by Bailey Bolen. ■

Warrior’s Charge Wins Razorback Last year, Florida-bred Warrior’s Charge appeared in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes as a somewhat anonymous newcomer on the Triple Crown scene having won only a maiden special weight and a first level optional claiming race at Oaklawn in his previous two starts in March and April respectively. Despite his moderate credentials, however, the Brad Cox-trained Warrior’s Charge finished fourth in the Preakness and only two-and-a-half lengths behind winner War of Will. Warrior’s Charge did not race again until starting in a second-tier optional claiming at Fair Grounds on Dec. 18 going a mile-andone-sixteenth, but he won with ease by two lengths. Cox then used only a few moderate works at Fair Grounds in January and February, the last one going five furlongs in 1:02.20 on Feb. 9, to prepare for the $500,000 Razorback Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn on Feb. 17. Cox and owners Ten Strike Racing and Madaket Stables LLC were rewarded for the strategy in the Razorback as Warrior’s Charge won the mile-and-one-sixteenth race with tenacity. Just as he had done in all of the above mentioned races, Warrior’s Charge went right to the front from the start of the Razorback and led by a length-and-a-half over high weight Pioneer Spirit under 120 pounds and Joevia together in second after going the first quarter-mile in :23.69. Warrior’s Charge and jockey Florent Geroux maintained a length advantage over those two through a

moderate half-mile in :47.85 and six furlongs in 1:12.51 and he continued to lead by a length around the far turn. Pioneer Spirit and Joevia failed to maintain the pressure into the stretch but Bankit and Snapper Sinclair took up the challenge on the outside of Warrior’s Charge. With a furlong to the finish, Bankit ranged up on even terms with Warrior’s Charge and those two took their fight to the finish with Warrior’s Charge crossing under the wire a head in front in a time of 1:43 flat over the fast track. Bankit was four-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of third-place finisher Snapper Sinclair, who was followed in order by Pioneer Spirit, Campaign, Bravazo, Rated R Superstar, Math Wizard, Guest Suite, Exulting and Joevia. Warrior’s Charge went to the post as the 3-1 favorite under 118 pounds and paid $8 to win. “He’s a good gate horse. He always puts himself in a great position,” Geroux said. “I took advantage of it. We went to the lead and he relaxed nicely for me on the backside. When he saw that other horse (Bankit) coming down the lane, he fought very hard to the wire. It was great.” Cox noted that he felt Warrior’s Charge

jockey Emisael Jaramillo left little doubt as to their intentions as they raced to the lead, two lengths in front of Lovesick in second and Molto Bella in third through a blistering :21.60 two furlongs. Although they slowed just a bit around the far turn to click-off a :44.17 half-mile, they were four lengths in front turning for home and six lengths ahead of Lovesick in mid-stretch. Although she began to tire in the final yards before the wire, Lady’s Island finished up in 1:09.97 and two lengths in front of 4-

Jackson Graduates With Grade 3 World of Trouble Win Tracy Pinchin’s homebred Jackson, who has been a consistent winner of Florida-bred stakes and Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes throughout his career, elevated to graded-stakes winner Feb. 22 at Gulfstream Park by winning the Grade 3 World of Trouble Stakes. The 4-year-old colt who had four times finished second in open stakes at Gulfstream, broke through with a threequarter-length win over seven other older horses in the $100,000 World of Trouble at six furlongs. The World of Trouble started with some commotion as Jackson broke to the right from post five and bumped Admiral Lynch in leaving from the four-hole with the post time favorite and Mr. Prospector (G3)-second-place finisher Lasting Legacy taking the brunt of the chain reaction in post two. But the incident had little effect on the two speedsters as Admiral Lynch raced to the front to take an early lead with Jackson to his outside and a length-and-half back. Admiral Lynch raced through a quartermile in :22.52 and the half-mile in :45.15 with Jackson trying to close the gap around 12 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2020

the far turn and into the stretch but a tenacious Admiral Lynch maintained a head advantage past the eighth pole. But the Florida-bred Jackson, under a busy ride from jockey Luis Saez, wore down his rival in the final 200 yards to finish in 1:09.55 on the fast track and pull a mild upset at 13-1. Admiral Lynch held on for second, a length-and-a-half ahead of Epic Dreamer in third. Lasting Legacy was fourth followed by Fast Pass, Yorkton, Florida-bred Sweetontheladies and Golden Lion. “He warmed up so good. He broke so well, he was right there,” Saez said. “When we came to the three-eighths pole I know we can fire. We came to the stretch and he did it.” Jackson is trained by Tracy Pinchin’s husband Jose Pinchin, who said he always thought the son of Kantharos had the talent to win at this level. “We always knew he had talent. He just had to get it together,” Pinchin said. “He’s [a] better 4-year-old than he was as a 3-year-old. I was really pleased. He broke good; he tracked the horse. Luis went around and gave him a great ride. “Hey, he’s a homebred, so we must be happy. The mare is worth something. It’s a Grade 3.” Jackson is out of the Put it Back mare Deposit Only, who has also produced stakesplaced Catfight Cowgirl. She also has an

would put in a good effort based on his morning training. “The horse came out on top and I’m very proud of him,” Cox said. “He’s been training well and showed up today. Without a doubt, we’ll keep him here and look at the Essex Handicap [run March 14] and Oaklawn Handicap [April 18] for his next start.” Warrior’s Charge earned $300,000 for the Razorback victory and increased his career revenues to $565,310 with four wins in eight starts. By Munnings out of Battling Brook, by Broken Vow, Warrior’s Charge was bred in Florida by Al Shaquab Racing. unraced 2-year-old full-sister to Jackson and a yearling colt and weanling filly by Uncaptured, to whom she was also bred in 2019. Jackson won for the sixth time in 16 starts and his first-place check of $60,140 increased his lifetime bankroll to $446,715, of which $216,750 has come in Florida-bred and Florida Sire Stakes efforts. He won the $75,000 Juvenile Sprint over Florida-breds as a 2-year-old at Gulfstream Park West before taking the $113,000 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Sophomore Stakes on Florida Cup Day and the FTBOA FSS Silver Charm at Tampa Bay Downs in March and May of last year. He also won the FTBOA FSS Marion County at Tampa Bay in December before finishing third behind winner Extravagant Kid in the state-bred Sunshine Millions Sprint on Jan. 18 at Gulfstream just prior to the World of Trouble. Jackson paid $28.20 on a $2 win ticket. ■

Faction Cat Sets Track Record in Turf Dash Faction Cat, one of the few remaining representatives for the late Florida sire Wildcat Heir, earned his first career stakes victory in record time and some Florida-bred supplement money to boot as the 7-year-old gelding won the $100,000 Turf Dash Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 22. The purse for the five furlong Turf Dash also included a $25,000 bonus for Florida-breds that was paid on a 60-20-10-5-3-2 basis. In addition to his maiden score at Churchill Downs in June of 2017, Faction Cat had racked up five career wins in allowance and optional claiming races including his last start prior to the Turf Dash when he won a top level, $100,000 optional claiming race over Tampa Bay Downs’ turf course on Jan. 24. In his two only other tries against added-money company, he was close when third in the Dec. 7 Claiming Crown Canterbury Stakes behind winner Shekky Shebaz at Gulfstream Park two starts back and second to fellow Florida-bred Extravagant Kid in the off-the turf, $100,000 Janus Stakes on Dec. 28.

But the third time against stakes horses was the charm for Faction Cat, owner Asterace Group LLC and trainer Georgina Baxter. As his past performance lines had indicated, Faction Cat led at every pole in the Turf Dash after starting with jockey Albin Jimenez from post six in the 10-horse field. With a length lead on Rainbow Heir Stakes-winner Justaholic through furious fractions of two furlongs in :20.61 and the half in :42.66, Faction Cat exited the far turn with a two-length lead over Justaholic in second, who was five lengths in front of 10-1 choice Mai Ty One On in third. Justaholic made another run at Faction Cat in deep stretch but the latter stayed three-quarters-ofa-length ahead of Justaholic at the finish to set the new standard for five furlongs on Tampa Bay’s turf course in :53.97, .66 faster than Bold Thunder’s stakes and track record set in 2015. Justaholic, who was the 2-1 favorite, finished five-and-a-half lengths better than Mai Ty One On in third followed by End Play, Extravagant Kid, Florida-bred Harry’s Ontheloose, Backtohisroots, Crosstown Shootout, Oldies But Goodies and Florida-bred Pay Any Price. “I said last week, the way he ran here last time and the way he’s been training, I knew he would step up and turn in a big performance today,” Baxter said. “[Jockey] Jose Ortiz (who rode Faction Cat in the Janus) said if that race had stayed on the grass, it would have been a different story. I was very confi-

dent today, and I told [Jimenez] this horse is a lot sharper than he used to be.” Jimenez agreed when he also said he was grateful for the chance to ride.” “I appreciate the opportunity to ride him today,” Jimenez said. “He’s a really nice horse, and he looks like he loves this turf course. It went pretty much perfect. I knew [Justaholic] was going to finish strong, but I could feel that I had plenty of horse left.” Faction Cat has now won eight of 33 career starts while earning $334,634 in his career. His $60,000 check for winning the Turf Dash included $15,000 from the FTBOA Florida-bred supplement. Extravagant Kid earned $3,000 including a $750 FTBOA Florida-bred supplement for fifth while Harryontheloose increased his share of the $1,500 sixth-place purse by $500 from the supplement. He was sent to the post at 9-2 and paid $11.40 to win. Faction Cat is out of the Cimarron Secret mare Zooming By and was bred in Florida by Ann Ferrentino. Zooming By also has a 3-year-old winner by Soldat and a 2-year-old filly, Z’devil, by Daredevil. On Feb. 9, she produced a filly by Uncaptured. ■

Ridden by Albin Jimenez from post seven, Jean Elizabeth wasted no time in getting the early lead as she blazed through a quarter-mile in a quarter horse-like :20.83 while a half-length ahead of Abundantia Stakes second-place finisher Escapade in second on her outside and Florida-bred R Happy Ending, who was another a length back in third. Although she clocked the half-mile in a more reasonable :43.57, she extended her lead to a length over Escapade and two in front of R Happy Ending heading for home as Florida-bred Miss Deplorable entered the fray on the outside. Jean Elizabeth finished the five furlongs in :55.09 on the firm turf and a half-length ahead of Miss Deplorable in second and another half-length ahead of R Happy Ending in third. They were followed in order by Ode to Joy, Escapade, Jo Jo Air, Rocky Policy, Florida-bred Thinkin Cowtown, Florida-bred Ambassador Luna and Bayberry. Charmaines’ Mila, Girls Know Best, Mae Never No (Ire) and Stylishly were scratched. “[Jean Elizabeth is] just an amazing horse. She’ll run on broken glass, I guess,” Rivelli said from Chicago. “It’s been a total team effort with her from day one, and you just pinch yourself with a horse like this. “I thought she made the lead pretty easy and [Jimenez] didn’t send her. With Verve Upsets Hutcheson in Stakes Debut

Smash Factor and King Snake clocked the first quarter-mile in a solid :23.14 before moving into the turn with Ournationonparade joining the engagement on the outside. Meanwhile, With Verve was still out of the picture and five-lengths behind the compact field. King Snake could not keep up on the rail as Smash Factor and Ournationonparade took over past the three-eighths-pole with odds-on favorite Shivaree beginning to make up ground on the outside in fourth after a slow start. Smash Factor and Ournationonparade led Florida-bred Shivaree by a length-and-a-half into the stretch with a half-mile in :46.66 as With Verve suddenly made an appearance. Smash Factor, Ournationonparade, Shivaree and With Verve spanned four-across the track in tandem as they passed the eighthpole before the latter two took their momentum to the front in the final 100 yards. However, With Verve got the best of Shivaree to win by a neck in 1:11.14 over the fast track with Ournationonparade just a neck farther back in third. Smash Factor was a close fourth followed by Peruvian Boy and King Snake. “I studied the race and it looked like there was a lot of speed, so my plan was to break, let him settle and come with a run,” Prado said after his 7,054th career win. “The race set up beautiful. Around the turn, I asked him a little bit and he was going well. The horse inside [Shivaree] fought real hard in the lane. [With Verve] is a gutsy horse. He’s getting better with every race and the thing I like about him is he can go short or long.”

Florida-bred With Verve did not look like a winner of the Hutcheson Stakes to the wagering public, nor did he look to be much a threat down the backstretch of the six furlong race. But the Eric J. Wirth homebred proved all wrong with a striking, six-wide move past the quarter-pole to garner the winner’s share of the $100,000 Hutcheson at Gulfstream Park Feb. 29 at odds of 18-1. Trained by Larry Bates, With Verve broke well from post four but was quickly taken back to last by jockey Edgar Prado as fellow Floridabred Smash Factor and 11-1 choice King Snake took the early lead in the Florida-bred With Verve field of six 3-year-olds. 14 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2020

elli said. “It looked like those others were taking a shot at her in the stretch, but [Jimenez] kind of angled her out and she took off again.” Jimenez sensed her determination today. “I knew when I asked her she would take me there. She is a game mare and she has a big heart,” Jimenez said. “She keeps improving every race.” Jean Elizabeth is out of Rooney Doodle, by Lit de Justice who has also produced stakes-placed Hollarforadollar, by Bring the Heat; stakes-place What’s Up Dude, by First Dude; a stakes-winning full-brother to Jean Elizabeth in Dugout; and a yearling colt, who is also a full-brother to Jean Elizabeth. In 2019 she was bred to Laoban. Jean Elizabeth, bred by Rivelli and Ravin, has now won 14 of 20 career starts with earnings of $607,668. She left the gate at odds of 4-5 and paid $3.60 to win. Miss Deplorable earned $20,000 including $5,000 in FTBOA supplement money while R Happy Ending earned $10,000 including $2,500 in FTBOA supplement money. ■

Bates was also quick to give credit to Prado for the smart ride while also showing gratification to Wirth. “What can you tell Edgar? I told Edgar what I’ve told him the last 35 years – have a nice day.” “[With Verve is] a real nice horse. Mr. [Eric] Wirth, they’ve been very dedicated. They’ve been in the game some 50 years. They’ve had a lot of homebreds. This is the nicest we’ve had in a while. I couldn’t be happier for him.” With Verve won his second career start at Gulfstream Park West in November against $35,000 maiden claimers at six furlongs before graduating to optional claiming starter allowance company where he won again at six furlongs two starts later at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 5. Bates then entered With Verve in a first level, $75,000 optional claiming race at a mile on Dec. 20, where he finished sixth before stepping down to first level, $16,000 optional claiming statebreds at six furlongs where he finished fourth on Jan. 18 and then won at that same level by three-and-a-half lengths on Feb. 8 just prior to the Hutcheson. With Verve is by Kantharos out of With Elan, by Offlee Wild and his third win in seven starts increased his bankroll to $135,940. With Verve is the third winner for With Elan, who also has a 2-year-old filly by Chitu and a yearling filly by Poseidon’s Warrior. She was bred to Valiant Minister in 2019. He paid $38.60 to win. ■

Starship Jubilee Wins Hillsborough, Topping Florida-bred Trifecta Starship Jubilee topped a Florida-bred trifecta and won her third stakes in three 2020 starts March 7 at Tampa Bay Downs as the 7-year-old mare won the Grade 3 Hillsborough Stakes against 10 other fillies and mares over a mile-and-one-eighth on the turf. Starship Jubilee took the winner’s share of the $225,000 Hillsborough, that also included a $25,000 win supplement for Florida-breds presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, by a length-and-a-quarter over

bilee has yet to be defeated since owner Blue Heaven Farm considered retiring her into her next career as a broodmare following her 2019 championship campaign. Last year, Starship Jubilee won three of seven starts and more than $800,000, including victories in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes and Grade 2 Canadian Stakes at Woodbine. She is nominated for a Sovereign Award as Canada’s champion turf female, a title she won twice previously in 2017 and ‘18. So far in the new year, the Kevin Attardtrained daughter of Indy Wind easily won the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf by three-and-one-quarter lengths on Jan. 18 for the second straight year and the Grade 3 Suwannee River Stakes by more than four lengths on Feb. 8, both over the Gulfstream Park turf. In the Hillsborough, Starship Jubilee and jockey Javier Castellano broke well from post seven before settling into a crowded fifth-place running position behind pacesetting longshot Dynatail through two furlongs in :24.22 and the half-mile in :48.98. Forced four-wide around the far turn in tandem with Beautiful Lover to her outside, Starship Ju-

bilee took over with an eighth-mile to run from Jehozacat, who had won the Grade 3 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes and Wayward Lass Stakes at Tampa Bay in her two previous starts. The Chad Brown-trained Beautiful Lover maintained a resilient challenge in deep stretch before Starship Jubilee drew clear late to win in 1:47.83 over the firm turf. Kelsey’s Cross was another three-quarters of a length farther back in third after an impressive rally from last. Magic Star, Get Explicit, Wish Upon, Jehozacat, Lady Oxbow, Hanalei Moon, Dynatail and Juliana completed the order of finish. As the 6-5 favorite, Starship Jubilee paid $4.40 to win. “I had a beautiful trip, I expected to be close to the pace,” Castellano said. “This is the type of horse you can do whatever you want—you can dictate the pace or you can come from behind. She’s such a classy horse. I enjoyed the ride and I’m very fortunate to be part of it. It looks like she is getting better and better and better.” Attard also said the venerable Starship Jubilee is showing no signs of slowing down. “She’s getting better with age, just like a fine wine, a woman coming into herself. She’s 7-[years-old] but she’s been healthy, and I think it’s great for the sport when you see an older horse like her staying around and running at a top level. “She has a strong following; every time she wins I get messages from everywhere and it’s just nice to see people appreciate what she brings each time she runs. She’s been a real Cinderella story and has exceeded expectations, obviously. It’s just wonderful that I’m a part of it.” The Cinderella reference by Attard relates to his claiming Starship Jubilee for $16,000 at Gulfstream Park in February of 2017. Since the claim, Starship Jubilee has won 14 times including nine stakes, seven of which were graded, including the Canadian Stakes twice, the Grade 2 Nassau Stakes and

the Grade 2 Dance Smartly Stakes in a dead heat with Rainha Da Bateria. Out of the Forest Wildcat, stakes-placed mare Perfectly Wild, Starship Jubilee was bred by William P. Sorren of Miami Beach, Fla. For her career, she has won 17 of 35 starts with earnings of $1,498,667. ■

Rogue Too, who was claimed for $10,000 at Indiana Grand Race Course by trainer Doug Danner and owner Andrew D. Janzen in July, won her sixth consecutive race and her first added-money event March 14 at Turfway Park when she dominated the $84,422 Latonia Stakes with a five-and-three-quarterslength victory. The Latonia Stakes featured a field of 12 fillies and mares, 4-years-old and older, who went one mile on the all-weather Polytrack. With regular rider Rogelio Miranda in the saddle, Rogue Too broke best of all from post four and wasted little time in gaining an expected front-running position as they raced

from last to get second, four lengths better than Harmless in third. They were followed in order by Red Dane (Ity), Rumandice, Maid in the Mist, Flash n’ Dance, Miss Mosiac, Gorgeous in Rags, New Roo, Call Me Kayla and Jeannie’s Beepbeep. It was the fifth of seven winners on the day for Lopez, who tied a Gulfstream Park record for most victories in a single day by a jockey. In the record book, Lopez joins Luis Saez, who won seven races at Gulfstream Park twice in 2018 on Jan. 24 and March 29; Tyler Gaffailione (July 4, 2017); and Jerry Bailey (March 11, 1996.) Prior to the win with Hear My Prayer, Lopez won the daily double with Strike Magic ($21) and Time to Two Step ($2.40); French Quarter ($3.60) in race five and Quick Step Ed ($8.80) in the sixth. After the Melody of Colors, he added wins aboard We Miss Susie ($6) in race 10 and National Honor in race 12. Hear My Prayer paid $4. Hear My Prayer was bred by Janet Erwin of Belleview, Fla., has now won three of five starts and $90,310 and is out of Additional Prayer, by Songandaprayer. Additional Prayer also has a yearling filly by Rainbow Heir and was bred to Awesome Slew in 2019. Two races later, Cajun Casanova put in a purposeful rally down the stretch to win the Texas Glitter Stakes with jockey Miguel Vasquez aboard for trainer Michael Pino. It was the first stakes win since the son of Stonehedge Farm South’s Cajun Breeze won the $75,000 Hollywood Beach Stakes at five furlongs on the Gulfstream Park turf in September. Last year he broke his maiden in his second start in May and was third in the $50,000 Inaugural Stakes won by Zino Boyz going six furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs in September. In three previous starts this year, all at Gulfstream, the bay colt was fourth behind winner and fellow Florida-bred Shivaree in the six furlong Limehouse Stakes on Jan. 4; won and was claimed by Pino in a $50,000 optional claiming starter allowance going five furlongs after being taken off the turf on Jan. 23 and was second in a $52,000 allowance race going five furlongs on the turf behind winner Aye Aye Sir on Feb. 17. Cajun Casanova was off a step slow from post five in the Texas Glitter as Aye Aye Sir

since, Hear My Prayer was sixth, after leading at every point of call in the $100,000 Ginger Brew Stakes won by She’s My Type at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 4. The David Fisher-trainee had plenty left to finish off the field of 11 in the Melody of Colors with jockey Paco Lopez aboard. Hear My Prayer broke evenly from post four as the even-money favorite and wasted no time in getting to her customary position on the front-end before being quickly joined by 5-2 second choice Foolish Humor to her outside. Those two went around the bend in tandem after a first quarter in a blistering :21.23 with Hear My Prayer keeping a slight advantage on the inside and Compensate chasing from a length-and-a-half farther back in third. Coming out of the turn, Lopez took a peek between his legs in search of a challenge but by the time he looked up again, Hear My Prayer had suddenly sprinted clear of Foolish Humor before the rider could manage a cue as Compensate was now challenging for second on the far outside. Down the stretch, Hear My Prayer continued to run faster than Lopez could ride as she was in full flight by the time the rider could manage two right-handed taps that looked more in retort to her acceleration than strategic. Hear My Prayer finished over the firm turf in :55.89 with Compensate three-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Foolish Humor in third. They were followed in order by Mrs. Maisel, Florida-breds Free the Beast and Silver Tunes, Just Smokin’, Still Alive, Randiabby, Reggae Revolution and Take Charge Eh.

Florida-bred Cajun Casanova

R Man Joe established a two-length lead around the turn ahead of Aye Aye Sir and Ikeisgreat together in second as Cajun Casanova was fourth from another length-and-half back. R Man Joe took an easy two length-lead into the run for home and maintained a clear lead into the final furlong with Cajun Casanova still trying to find his best stride on the far outside with three-lengths still to make up. R Man Joe continued his clear lead past the sixteenth-pole when Cajun Casanova put in a sudden acceleration and took over in the final yards before the finish to win by a neck in :55.28 on the firm turf. R Man Joe was second, a length-and-ahalf ahead of a late-running Guildsman (Fr) in third followed by Ikeisgreat, Rockcrest, Aye Aye Sir, favored Another Miracle and Ain’t Wasting Time. Bred in Florida by Michael Yates in the name of his Shadybrook Farm LLC in Morriston, Fla., and owned by Smart Angle LLP, Cajun Casanova has now won half of his eight career starts with earnings of $183,023. Susan's Girl posted seconds in the Mother Goose Stakes and Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park before shipping back west to Hollywood Park. There she was second in the Princess Stakes and third in the Hollywood Oaks. Then it was back across the country to Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania, where she found the winner's circle in the Cotillion Handicap. Back at Belmont Park, Susan's Girl was triumphant in the Gazelle Handicap and Beldame Stakes. The latter field was stocked with the best 3-year-old fillies in the country. Besides Susan's Girl, there was Summer Guest, Chou Croute, Numbered Account and Typecast. Susan's Girl rallied on the rail, jumped over a piece of paper near the finish line and won by a length over Summer Guest with Chou Croute third. Winning time for the nine furlongs was 1:47 2/5. On the season, Susan's Girl made 13 starts, posting nine wins, all stakes wins, two seconds and two thirds to bank $352,678. She had made three starts in May at three different tracks, two starts in June at two different tracks, two starts in July at two different tracks and two starts in September, both at Belmont Park. In a remarkable feat at the latter, Susan's Girl won the Gazelle Handicap on September 2 and then the Beldame Stakes on September 9. Not surprisingly, Susan's Girl collected the 1972 Eclipse Award as the champion 3-year-old filly. ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

In 1973, the graded stakes race system was in effect and Susan's Girl wasted little time in racking up graded

stakes wins. Still under John Russell's tutelage, she opened the season again at Santa Anita Park and shone brightly as ever. Carrying 127 pounds, she bested Convenience in both the Santa Maria Handicap (G2) and Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1). Stretched out to 10 furlongs proved to be not a problem for Susan's Girl, winning the Santa Barbara Handicap (G1) while carrying 129 pounds.

Shipped back to the East Coast, Charles Parke took over training Susan's Girl in the fall after Russell resigned to condition the Phipps family's stable. The change of trainer made no matter to Susan's Girl. She would win carrying 127 pounds in the Susquehanna Handicap (G2) at Liberty Bell, Delaware Handicap (G1) at Delaware Park and Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. In the Delaware Handicap, she covered 10 furlongs in 2:00.60 while beating Summer Guest. In 14 starts, Susan's Girl scored six wins, all graded including four Grade 1s, two seconds and three thirds to earn $340,496. She won a well-earned 1973 Eclipse Award as champion older mare. The 1974 season was a strange one for Susan's Girl. She finished second in the Santa Monica Handicap (G2) and third in the San Pasqual Handicap (G2) at Santa Anita. In the latter, she was beaten by Tri Jet, another Hooper Florida-bred multiple graded stakes-winner from the same 1969 crop. Susan's Girl also came out of the San Pasqual Handicap (Feb. 2, 1974) with chips in her left foreleg. But Hooper wasn't ready to retire his big mare; he wanted her to become the first distaff runner in North America to win $1 million. Dr. Robert Copelan removed three chips from Susan's Girl's right front ankle and she was sent back to Hooper Farm to recuperate. As a 6-year-old mare in 1975, Susan's Girl was as amazing as ever. She won the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park on April 2 and then the Long Beach Handicap (G2) on the turf at Hollywood Park on April 26. On July 28, she captured the Matchmaker Handicap (G1) at Delaware Park, setting a track record of 1:54.20 for the nine-and-a-half furlongs. Then for a little icing on the cake of her stellar career, Susan's Girl won her second Delaware Handicap (G1) at Delaware Park on Aug. 10, her second Beldame Stakes

She earned $361,951 and boosted her career bankroll to $1,251,668, giving Hooper his wish of having the first distaff millionaire in North America. Susan's Girl picked up her third Eclipse Award, being named the 1975 champion older mare. And Hooper collected his own Eclipse Award as Outstanding Breeder. In 1976, Susan's Girl was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame. As a broodmare, Susan's Girl produced Florida-bred Grade 1 stakes winner Copelan, by Tri Jet. Named after the equine surgeon who had removed Susan's Girl's chips, Copelan won the 1982 Champagne Stakes (G1), Futurity Stakes (G1), Hopeful Stakes (G1) and earned $594,278. Copelan was also a leading Florida stallion, siring 35 stakes winners. Susan's Girl died at Hooper Farms on Oct. 18, 1988, at the age of 19. ■

COURTESY GULFSTREAM PARK

Gulfstream Announces $3.775 Million Spring & Summer Stakes Schedule

By GULFSTREAM PARK PRESS OFFICE HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – ulfstream Park’s spring and summer stakes schedule will offer horsemen $3.775 million in purses featuring the $1.55 million Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes and $300,000 Princess Rooney (Grade 2), which will be moved from June to September along with the $200,000 Smile Sprint (G3). The spring racing season begins April 2. The stakes schedule kicks off on Kentucky Derby Day, Saturday, May 2, with the $100,000 Big Drama Stakes for Florida-breds and the Honey Ryder and English Channel, both contested on the turf. The biggest change to the stakes schedule will be moving the Princess Rooney and Smile Sprint to Sep. 5. The distance of the Princess Rooney has been changed from seven furlongs to six furlongs and the purse increased $50,000. The race day will also include the

G

$75,000 Miss Gracie and $75,000 Bear’s Den. “Both the Princess Rooney and Smile were moved from the middle of the summer to September in hopes of more participation moving closer to the fall,” said Mike Lakow, Gulfstream’s Vice President of Racing. “We also noticed there was a void in filly and mare Grade 1 and 2 races under seven furlongs. Therefore we changed the distance of the Princess Rooney to six furlongs and brought the purse to $300,000.” This will be the 39th anniversary of the $1.4 million Florida Sire Stakes, for 2-year-olds sired by accredited Florida stallions. The rich series, which has produced Awesome Feather, Three Ring, Big Drama, Smile and Jackson Bend, kicks off Aug. 1 with the $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager and $100,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen divisions. It continues Aug. 29 with the $200,000 FTBOA Florida

Sire Stakes Affirmed and $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl and culminates Sept. 26 with the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes In Reality and $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl. The $150,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Wildcat Heir will also be run Sept. 26 for 3-year-olds and older going a mile. Gulfstream’s live card on Preakness Day, May 16, will include the $100,000 Musical Romance for Florida-breds and the $75,000 Roar and $75,000 Powder Break, while Belmont Stakes Day, June 6, will feature the $100,000 Soldier’s Dancer and $100,000 Ginger Punch, both for Florida-breds. Gulfstream will also have stakes races on three Saturdays during Saratoga’s summer meet as well as three stakes on July 4 weekend. “We set the stakes schedule to accompany important racing days and holidays,” Lakow said. ■

40 THE FLORIDA HORSE • APRIL/MAY 2020

If you would like an English translation of this column, please contact Brock Sheridan, Editor-in-Chief at 352.732.8858 or email at: bsheridan@ftboa.com
