...with these awesome Autumn looks W

ho doesn’t love the warm feeling of autumn with its fall palette of oranges, browns, rusts, yellows, gold, copper and bronze. For your inspiration think of an autumn harvest of pumpkins, squash, gourds, fall leaves, bales of hay and jugs of cider. Create your ambiance with a rich chocolate brown and orange reception area, and try adding pears, apples and cranberries to your centerpieces.

Homemade goodies are always welcomed by your guests and are

a wonderful treat at any autumn wedding! Candy apples, jams and syrups are a favorite treat, and don’t forget to get creative with your packaging…burlap bags can make a big hit. A few popular flowers for 2011 autumn weddings include mango calla lillies, hypericum, mums, sunflowers, montbretia and an old favorite roses. An ivory or champagne bridal gown with antique or vintage lace will set the theme for your wedding day. 1. Leaf Box What better way to bring in the brilliance of autumn to your wedding than with this Autumn Allure Collection fall leaf box favor. Your guests are sure to “fall” in love with this adorable autumn leaf design trinket box. The elegant cut out design top has amber stone embellishements in the stem and is removable to reveal an inside that’s perfect for holding jewelry. 2. Pumpkin Centerpiece A white-pumpkin shell becomes the vase for an arrangement of roses, daffodils, ranunculuses, calla lilies, tulips, and hypericum berries in fall colors such as yellows, peaches, and shades of orange. Smaller pumpkins and votive candles in orange-glass holders fill out the centerpiece. 3. Fiery Hued Bouquet This compact oval cascade is lively with fiery hues. Cheerful little narcissus with orange centers dance among freckled vanda orchids, red-striped roses, and deep-orange gloriosa lilies with buttery edges. Young gloriosa blooms with their still-green petals provide contrast.

4. Yellow and Orange Bouquets and Boutonnieres These flowers complement tables in bursts of yellow blooms, shimmery accents, and an aura of luxe glamour. Boutonnieres glitter when wrapped in shiny ribbon and accented with silver millinery leaves. A compact bouquet of ranunculus, parrot tulips, and mini cattleya orchids are held together by a rich copper bow. Lady’s slipper orchids and calla lilies peek through the frilly gloriosa lilies for this maid-of-honor bouquet. 5. Flavorful Favors for Autumn Weddings Your guests will love this delightful maple syrup wedding favor, personalize it with your names and wedding date. Some of our other edible favorites are Hot Cocoa, Gourmet Jam, Cookies and Chocolate or Caramel Pretzel Wands. Enjoy! 6. Dahlia Boutonniere A dahlia boutonniere and a cheery polka-dot tie offset a groomsman’s khaki suit at a celebration in Tennessee.

finding the perfect gown

Analyzing your body type before you go shopping will help you know what style of gown to look for. Here are some helpful hints:

Short and thin figured:

AL NATUR WAIST

A shirtwaist or natural waist style with a full or flowing skirt in most any fabric. Chiffon, lace, velvet or gowns with netting will look stunning on this figure.

Try on a variety of styles including strapless, sleeveless, long sleeved and off the shoulder. Beware of see through designs which tend to show too much, and avoid knits and clingy fabrics all together. We here at Florida Bride Magazine, commend the bridal designers that have addressed the issue of design for each bride to look her best on her wedding day.

Tall and thin:

MERMA

ID

Layered gowns will make you appear shorter and add a bit of weight. A gown with a mermaid or a full skirt will also flatter you. You can wear many fabrics including satin, lace, velvet and chiffon.

Remember not to be alarmed if your normal size is an 8 and your bridal gown is a size 10 or 12. Bridal gowns tend to run differently in sizes. If you do find yourself in an in between size choose the larger size and have it altered to fit. When shopping for a slimming look keep in mind fabrics can make a significant difference.

SS

PRINCE

Tall and full figured: A-line or Princess styles are extremely slimming. Satin or chiffon are the best fabrics to look for. Try a modern lace-up dress which is flattering to your height.

A-LINE 12 Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2011 ♼ www.florida-bride.com

the magic... and style of the wedding

planner

Get inspiration from the beautiful warm colors and scents of autumn.

With a little imagination and good planning all is possible!

14 Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2011 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

When Planning Your Fall Themed Wedding: Get inspiration from the beautiful warm colors and scents of autumn. Northern Florida brides have the chance to enjoy the changing of color on the leaves more than southern Florida brides do. However, that does not mean southern Florida brides cannot create the experience in their wedding day theme. Oh no, with a little imagination and good planning all is possible! Farmers markets hold a rich source of props for you to use. Did you know that hollowed out pumpkins make a wonderful container for your fall themed centerpiece? Instead of the traditonal guest sign in book try this: Use construction paper in fall colors, cut out in autumn shaped leaves. Punch a hole at the center top of the leaf and thread a ribbon through it. Place a wishing tree on a table, and put your cut out leaves on it along with a pen for your guests to sign their name and tie to the Wishing tree. An adorable idea for lining your aisle would be to carve your monogram into small pumpkins or mini gourds and place down your walkway. Remember the old wives tale that says, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away?” Though that may be true, as a wedding planner I see them as being great for place card holders.

Battle of The Beach Brides -

Sheraton Fort Lauderdale

by: Grace Crompton, Editor in Chief 50 Brides Competed for the Ultimate Wedding of their dreams on Sunday, May 15th. 2011 they came to battle. Dressed in full regalia with war paint on their faces, clappers, tambourines, and horns to make noise, feather caps, lei anklets, tiaras and crowns. Jimmy was Jammin with his Rocky theme playing, and I must admit the referees had their hands full! The countdown began with Get ready, Get set, Go! The competition began with the first group of brides racing to fill tall glass vases with small buckets of water, then putting on a bridal gown and attempting to run up a waterslide in their gowns and come back down.

Relay race... They then had to hold their gowns up and tread through a group of tires, and run as fast as they could back to their seats. It was an exhausting feat, but they did it. Each bride was timed by the officials, the top 25 proceeded to the next challenge. Michelle Hipps won the Jimmy Jam Productions DJ package, your wedding will be rockin’ Michelle!

25 brides began digging in 5 piles of sand that each had 3 diamonds buried in them. When it got to the last few diamonds and the clock was ticking the officials allowed one bridesmaid of each bride to help them with the dig. Beach sand was flying everywhere, our cameramen had to watch their lenses! When some of the diamonds still couldn’t be found a new competition was born. A random number was written on a piece of paper, and the remaining brides had to pick a number between 1 and 1000, the bride to guess the closest number that was written on the paper won. The number written on the paper was 681 and Becky was the winner with her choice of 615.

Diamond dig... The winner received a photography package from Michelle Lawson Photography. Out of the 25 brides that found the diamonds in the Diamond dig only 15 brides went on to the next challenge, the Bouquet toss and a chance to win a complete floral package for their wedding from Dalsimer.

16 Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2011 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

Bouquet toss... The 15 brides-to-be each had to throw a rose bouquet through a hole on a board decorated with a gown hanging on it, in order to proceed to the next level. Rose petals were scattered everywhere when the bouquets missed the hole and hit the board with a thud, but the crowd roared when the bouquets went through!

Let them eat cake!

Out of the 15 brides in the bouquet toss challenge only 7 went forward. Amanda threw her bouquet like a champ, then Dominque with her red rose bouquet wound up and away it flew straight into the hole. Then came Andrea, Jessica, Tiffany, Stephanie carefully choosing her yellow bouquet, and Erica all got their bouquets in and proceeded on to the next round.

The next competition for the brides was the Cupcake eating contest, and they each had to wear a bridal gown while eating their cupcakes. Cupcakes were stacked on a tray, each bride had a different color of cupcake in front of her for a rainbow of color. They were given 3 minutes to eat as many as they could. The winner would receive a wedding cake made by Ana Paz. The rules were very specific, no crumbs allowed, and no elbowing of another bride. The clock started counting down as they began frantically shoving cupcakes into their mouths! All the while the crowd was cheering them on. Their family and bridal party were there to support them, and they didn’t let them down. You could tell it was beginning to get to the brides and they were just dreading the next bite, but they were real champs.

The final battle! From the cupcake eating competition 5 brides and their bridesmaids went on to the Tug of War - look out theres a shark in the water! This was for the big prize, the one they had come to The Battle of the Beach Brides to win! A $10,000 Wedding package at the Fort Lauderdale Sheraton, and each one of them wanted it bad. Both sides dug their heels into the sand and yanked on the tulle covered rope, but one way or another someone was going to get drenched! While their friends and families cheered them on they did their best pulling and tugging, but only one team would be the winners! Each team was eliminated until it came to just two teams left and the final winner of the competition, that team was Team Natalie! Congratulations.

Basmati Rice Grits and Fried Southern Shrimp

Grits: 1 cup basmati rice, 2 cups heavy cream, 2 cups whole milk 1 cup chicken stock (broth), ½ pound butter, 1 cup mascarpone cheese

Southern Shrimp: Shrimp marinade: 20 pcs 16/20 shrimp, 3 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 tablespoon minced garlic Batter: 1 cup tempura batter, 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning, 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, ¼ cup buttermilk, 2 teaspoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 cup water (use as needed), 6 cups canola oil

Salt and pepper to taste. Take rice and grind fine in coffee grinder. Take cream, milk, chicken stock and butter and bring to boil in sauce pot on high heat. Once the mixture is boiling add rice and stir, turn down the heat to low and continue stirring. Cook for 10 minutes, make sure you stir once a minute. Turn off heat and fold in the mascarpone cheese, sprinkle in salt and white pepper if needed.

Preparation: Marinate shrimp in the marinade for 1 hour. In large stainless steel bowl mix all dry ingredients first and gradually add buttermilk and stir, add water until batter is just thick enough to coat the shrimp. Note: you don’t want it too thick or you will taste more batter than shrimp. Take fry pan with oil and bring to 340 degrees on medium heat. Dip shrimp into the batter just to the tail, shake off excess batter and carefully put in the frying oil (don’t place too many in the pan, maybe 4 or 5 to start). Fry for 3 minutes and flip and fry for another 3 minutes. Cut open one to see if fully cooked (fry longer if needed).

Abbey & Mallory find their perfect beach wedding in South Walton...

W

hen Abbey King of Birmingham, Alabama got engaged she knew without hesitation where she wanted to exchange vows with her husbandto-be Denson Roy. “A few years ago, I discovered Alys Beach and fell in love at first sight,” says Abbey. “It is one of the most beautiful communities I have ever seen.” The picture-perfect backdrop was just what she wanted for her romantic destination wedding. “The simplicity and beauty of the town is so appealing to me not to mention the amazing restaurants and gorgeous beach. Every time we visited the beach, I made Denson take me for a drive through Alys Beach and to dinner at George’s. So when we got engaged, we knew we wanted a beach wedding and knew it had to be Alys.” Visiting the Paul Johnson Photography beach each year has been a tradition in Abbey’s family as long as she can remember and, in addition to the scenic beauty and architectural charm of South Walton, she also wanted her guests to relax and enjoy themselves. “I have visited South Walton since I was a little girl and the Gulf Coast beaches are definitely some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. These beaches are a ‘happy place’ for me and where I find that I can truly relax and have a great time. Denson and I really wanted to share that feeling with our families.”

“Admire the beauty of some of the best Gulf beaches”

W

hile Abbey and Denson opted for a flip-flop ceremony on the white sand, other brides have found their wedding dreams come true just off the beachy path. Though South Walton’s unique geography offers worldrenowned sugar-sand beaches and turquoise Gulf waters on the south, the wooded shores of Choctawhatchee Bay to the north of this 26-mile stretch of paradise offer surprising variety. This water view is precisely what attracted Mallory Boulware of Newburgh, Indiana, and her fiancé Scott of Bushnell, Florida, to Bentley’s on the Bay. “I knew I wanted my wedding overlooking the water but not on the sand,” says Mallory. “Bentley’s on the Bay turned out to be the perfect place for me. We got married on the lawn overlooking the gorgeous Choctawhatchee Bay and it was exactly what I had always imagined. The food was fabulous and the ambiance makes it the perfect spot.” Wedding couples and guests can also golf the area’s 107 holes, fish the bay or Gulf, chow down on authentic cuisine ranging from casual beachside eateries to award-winning fine dining, bike along 19-mile Scenic Highway 30A or explore the many shops and boutiques throughout South Walton’s 15 beach neighborhoods. Other swoon-worthy sites include the scenic town of Seaside, Rosemary Beach’s lavish town greens overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Alys Beach’s Central Park or Fonville Press, WaterColor’s Cerulean Park or BaitHouse, and SunQuest’s cruise aboard the Solaris. Larger crowds opt for the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa’s spacious Emerald Ballroom or the Emerald Deck, as well as Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort’s Grand Hotel, featuring multiple ballrooms in the adjacent conference center. Getting married in South Walton isn’t just about white sand, turquoise water, luxurious views, delicious food and gorgeous sunsets – It’s about the experience of it all and the memories brides keep with them forever. www.visitsouthwalton.com

Q. A.

David Tutera the interview...

With Florida having so many destination weddings on the beach, what advise can you give beach brides in planning their outside beach themed weddings? When planning a beach wedding I love to use the ocean breeze to my advantage and place decorative accents like tall posts with billowing fabric flags to create dramatic backdrops, and soft fabric or ribbon accents to the ceremony structure to add a whimsical movement to the alter or chuppa. Similarly, I always make sure to let the landscape do the work, and position guests so that they are always facing the gorgeous view. I also like to build hard platforms (sometimes using sections of portable wooden dance floor) to create a solid runner for the aisle which is easier for the bride to walk on.

Q.

I am a crafty bride and like to be hands on. I am planning a Beach Wedding. We are trying to save money by doing our own centerpieces. My bridesmaids and I have been debating on what they should be. What are some of your favorite centerpieces that you’ve designed?

A.

I have had the pleasure of working on many incredible beach weddings, and one of my favorites was the most simple, and could be easily replicated by you and your bridesmaids. I kept the whole color palette white, from the linens to the china to the flowers. Down the center of the long tables, I ran a series of assorted glass containers and filled each one with its own white species such as calla lilies, casablanca lilies and white orchids in very simple, clean designs. This clean design was really very impactful against the lush greenery and beautiful beachscape that surrounded it.

David answers Florida Brides...

Q. A. Q. A. Q. A.

What advice could you give to our Brides on choosing the perfect gown for an outside beach wedding and a hot Florida summer? Florida brides need to embrace the weather and dress appropriately. I suggest light, flowing fabrics, sheer materials and possibly even shorter lengths! I also suggest that if their hair is frizz-prone, or if wind will be an issue, that brides also embrace this and go with an updo that will withstand the weather. Finally, make sure to keep extra powder on hand to ensure that they are shine-free for photos. When you share your personal experience with your TV brides do they become part of your life? Through the many seasons of My Fair Wedding, I have met some of the most appreciative, beautiful and kind couples that I have ever had the opportunity to work with. Although we only work together for a few weeks before the wedding, it’s an intense collaboration to get it all done, and we grow very close during that process. I keep in touch with many of the brides from the show, and in fact, Kim and Eddie (Breast Cancer Bride) were my special guests a few weeks ago at the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Annual Cancer Ball. What advice would you give to an aspiring wedding planner? The one piece of advice I have followed my whole life is to dream. I learned this from my parents when I was little and ever since then, every time a dream has come true...I dream bigger!

Q. A. Q. A. Q. A. Q. A. Q. A. Q. A.

David talks about his new line... If you had to give one piece of advice to couples, what would it be? I advise my couples to remember the point of a wedding - the union of two people, two lives, two families. This bit of advice should help brides from becoming too focused on the details and the budgets, and to focus more on the love story the wedding should tell... What type of shoe would you suggest for a beach wedding? I have planned many beach weddings, sinking sand does pose a problem in terms of fashionable wedding footwear. I would suggest going barefoot for your walk down the aisle as any shoes will not only sink, but wobble and potentially rub sand against your skin - making them too risky! What are the first steps brides should take when it comes to planning their wedding? I always suggest that a couple sort out their budget first- not only the overall number, but also what each individual element will cost. This will eliminate any surprises and help to keep everything in check. Sorting out a budget first also helps with an accurate headcount and practically-priced vendors. You now have a very elegant jewelry line at Sears, David Tutera by Faviana and have teamed up with JoAnn fabrics. What inspired you to start your own lines? Each of these lines, from my bridal fashion to the craft line was created to fill a hole that I saw in the market. David Tutera by Faviana is a collection of gowns that were red-carpet inspired, but extremely well-priced to ensure that every woman can feel like a celebrity on her big day. And my Down the Aisle in Style line available at JoAnn Fabrics is a series of craft products for the Do-It-Yourself bride which allows every bride to customize the pieces of her wedding, and stay on budget. What was your inspiration for the names of your bridal jewelry line at Sears? When coming up with the collection, I really drew from my experience in dealing with the different brides and bridal styles that I have encountered over the years. In order to simplify their selection process, I broke the looks down into four collections including the “Heirloom” collection for the antique-loving ladies to the “Eternal” line for my modern girls. Every bride will be able to define the type of bride they are from these collections, and hopefully use that direction to help her plan her wedding day decor as well! What is one thing a bride should never scrimp on in her wedding planning? Or, what is the most important thing to indulge in? The “Splurge” item will differ from bride to bride and couple to couple as this depends on whatever is most important to them. For some this will be the venue, for others the food, the music, or even the dress, but this “favorite” element is where the attention and appropriate budget should go first to ensure the splurge item is perfect!

DAVIDTUTERA Your something blue...

at SEARS

When you first pick up a David Tutera ring, you’ll notice something that sets it apart from any other ring you’ve ever seen. It’s special. It’s personal. It’s your something blue. Hidden on the inside of your ring band is a special surprise from David, a beautiful blue sapphire stone. As one of the four objects that every bride adds to her wedding outfit, this “something blue” is one piece you will cherish on your big day and carry with you for the rest of your life. Your “something blue” from David stands for purity, love and fidelity and is his gift to you.

Moving inspiration As a celebrity wedding planner for the past 25 years- who also helps make wedding dreams come true for my real brides on the TV show My Fair Wedding- I know how important every chapter of your wedding story is - and of course, your fairytale begins with your engagement ring! I am so excited to announce that I’ve partnered with Sears to create a collection of amazing and affordable engagement rings that will suit any bride’s style and personality. It gives me great pleasure to be able to design such an important piece of the wedding puzzle for you - my brides. For me, partnering with Sears was a no-brainer. This established retailer stands for quality and caters to every budget. When I designed the four specific looks for the David Tutera Bridal Jewelry collection - Eternal, Heirloom, Legacy, and Radiance - I wanted to make sure each one was truly special. After all, every bride-to-be needs to feel special! I have loved every moment of creating these beautiful pieces of jewelry and I hope you love them too! Say for example you’re one of my radiant brides who just can’t get enough bling, but your future husband likes to steer clear of anything too flashy. Go ahead and have your sparkling band studded with pave diamonds, and let him have his unadorned sleek silver band. If you love the idea of coordinating your jewelry, choose a bridal set. I’ve actually created beautiful bridal sets for Sears and you can be sure that I put a lot of effort into designing rings that are gorgeous. A fabulous thing you can do with your bands to make them unique and very intimate is to add a special engraving (be it a monogram or words that are meaningful to you both) or gemstones (perhaps your birthstones) to the inside of the band - something that only the two of you know is there. It’s this idea of having a keepsake for your eyes only that inspired me to adorn the inside of each of my rings for Sears with your something blue - a single sapphire. When you exchange rings this will be your moment to give each other a precious symbol of your union. From David, With Love

Casey& .. . y a d o t d Eric o o g s a w life the look

From the moment Eric proposed to Casey in Key West they knew their ceremony had to take place by the water. Casey located Julie McCullough of Beach Ceremonies by Jules to help execute her plan. Together they decided on having the ceremony at the end of Sand Key Beach in Clearwater beside a jetty, the setting was beautiful. Casey couldn’t have asked for better weather the morning of the ceremony. The couple saw each other very early in the morning before dressing for the ceremony, to exchange their wedding gifts. Casey had custom cufflinks made for Eric with maps of Key West and Rome Italy on them, and a leather embossed passport cover. As an extra surprise she also tucked a hand-embroidered handkerchief into his jacket pocket the day before that he didn’t find until he got dressed that read, “For a lifetime of tears of joy I love you, your bride.”

To complete her beach themed wedding, Casey had her four bridesmaids wear coral dresses, while Erics groomsmen wore tan suits. Eric donned an ivory shirt and tan paisley tie. The bride wore a strapless ivory satin, slightly mermaid style gown. It had a simple band of pearls at the natural waist, the perfect dress for her, with both structure and movement on the back to soften the look on the beach.

The couple took shots on the beach with their family and wedding party after the ceremony. The photographer joined them on the boat ride to the reception. They docked to the tune of “Say Hey, I Love You” by Michael Franti and to a railing above crowded with cheering friends and family. “Short of seeing Eric for the first time at our ceremony, that is my absolute favorite memory of our wedding day. I can close my eyes and be right back on the sailboat seeing everyone for the first time. And a year later, it still makes me tear up!” Photography - SugarLeaf Photography Florist - Catherine Swanson Hair - Cari Collinsworth Reception Entertainment - Don Juceam Coordinator - Julie McCullough Ceremony Violinist - Eric Nordstrom Venue - Island Way Grill

Real Weddings the reception

The couples choice of venue was Island Way Grill. The space they chose to use for the reception was on the stone terrace by the water. Tables were selected with plain white linens and burlap table runners to add texture. Centerpieces on each table consisted of one tall glass vase with sand and seagrass, one short vase with assorted blooms of flowers, and a round glass bowl for the table numbers. Casey wrote the table numbers on four inch white sand dollars nestled in a bowl of sand.

Instead of a traditional guest book, Eric and Casey selected three bottles of wine to age: one for their first, fifth and tenth anniversary. They were labeled with white starfish, and the guests signed the bottles with paint pens. To coordinate the color of her cake with her theme Casey took a swatch of her bridesmaids gowns to the designer and coordinated the color on her three tier cake. The couple had a traditional garter toss, but instead of throwing a bouquet they opted for a “marriage dance.”

Lauren & Christopher

Though Lauren and Chris grew up in different states they both share a love of the ocean and arts. The couple met at a party while they were attending Ringling College of Art and Design. Lauren immediately felt a close connection to Chris after learning they had both been camp counselors.

A few days after they first met Chris called Lauren and asked her on a date. As they talked they found they had a lot in common. When he took her home he gave her a kiss which left Lauren weak in her knees, an experience she had never known before. It made her think of that wonderful quote “True love is the soul’s recognition of it’s counterpart in another.” After graduating from college they moved to Key West where they had a lot of fun! One day after coming back from a vacation with his brothers Chris made reservations at a restaurant on Sunset Key. That evening after a wonderful dinner and wine Chris got down on one knee and proposed. Lauren was so excited she said “yes” before looking at the ring. Lauren loves the way Chris makes her laugh and how supportative he is. They both now have wonderful jobs, Chris doing what he loves to do working for Yahoo and A T & T, and Lauren is an aspiring event designer. After some turbulation in their lives with family and an accident Lauren was in they both truly realize the most important things in life is each other, family and friends. Laurens experience of designing her own wedding has led her to a career in Event Design & Styling! She just finished a 6 month Manager Internship at an event design company, and is now in the process of opening up her business. The wedding was held at an historic Venetian Palace called the Ringling Estate. The couple chose that venue because they met while attending the Ringling College of Art & Design and had always admired both the city and the estate. Being able to get married there was a dream come true. The bride created much of the decor herself. Classmates from Ringling Art College were on hand to paint live scenes during the entire evening. The seashell centerpieces consisted of antiqued urns covered in moss, there were seashell tiaras for the flower girls, and seashell wreaths to hang on the back of the chairs.

The bride and groom exchanged vows on the terrace with a sunset over the bay; by the time they started dancing, the view had changed to a perfect reflection of the moon in the water. The stationery collection of save the date, pocket fold invites with inserts, programs, weekend program, welcome postcard, etc. were all stamped and embossed with gold powder for shine and texture.

The custom beach tote each guest received was stuffed with custom chocolates and m&m’s and ocean related products like rum cake and key lime cookies. Seashell and pearl wreaths hung on the chairs and there was a fashion illustration of Lauren and her bridesmaids to use as stationery for the bridal showers and thank you notes. The beach themed cake consisted of key lime and coconut soaked in pineapple rum. Beignets were served as a midnight snack instead of a groom’s cake to keep his New Orleans tradition.

the Men behind... Mark Crompton

T

he relationship between the photographer and bride and groom is the single most important aspect in good photography says Mark, owner of A Seaside Wedding Photography in Pompano Beach, FL. “I think that’s where we excel. I seem to have an ability to get people to relax very quickly and enjoy themselves.” When asked if he felt that the ability to produce consistent imaging results with a range of personalities was a skill set that can be taught Mark answered, “I think it’s something you have or you don’t. It’s a big delineating factor between photographers when it comes to a true Wedding Photographer, and I believe that’s something I bring to wedding photography very well.” Beautiful Pictures begin long before the actual shoot. “Every client comes to our studio for a consultation, that’s where we meet and establish a relationship. We provide them with a checklist to fill out asking them what is most improtant to them on their wedding day, and the types of photos they would like to see. Some couples are more into photojournalism than others. By meeting with them prior to the wedding day we establish a feeling of what the final look of their photography will be. Mark tends to keep it simple on the set which more often than not turns out to be the beach. South Florida’s coastline has miles of picture coastal vistas, and this photographer uses them so frequently that he has developed his own system that allows him to focus his energies on what is important— his subjects. “The technical end should be made as simple as possible. I don’t think too much about it, I’m not a fashion photographer, I’m a wedding photographer. I look for the connection that each couple has with one another that differs from the next, to etch memories of time onto a photo.” Named International Wedding Photographer, Mark Cromptons hip, natural style helps capture the whole story as it unfolds. “It’s the quiet times, the telling details and the unique personalities,” explains Mark. Having worked in photojournalism and portrait, he is known for his ability to document the day with beautiful wedding pictures.

Every wedding should be treated as importantly as the Bride and Groom see it. Mark’s approach echoes throughout the Studio, although each photographer in the team provides his or her own unique freshness to wedding photography and to every shoot. With his great sense of humor and a personality that guests love, Mark sets the standard in wedding photography, and in capturing the magic moments of every event. He brings a sharp eye for detail, and an appreciation for the significance in every moment--as inspiration for memorable wedding shots that remain art pieces. “Weddings are a fascinating artistic outlet. I look for those special moments that convey the pure emotion of the day. I tell the Brides story in photographic artistry to bring out the pure beauty of every woman on her special day.” – Mark Crompton

hat makes a great video? Just ask David Beyrent who has been videoing weddings for the past 10 years and loves each one he films! “Every couple is unique and each film reflects that uniqueness they have with one another,” says David. He shoots in a cinematography style that creates the modern look couples have come to expect in todays wedding video. Meeting friendly, interesting people and being a part of a tradition that will be shown for generations to come is very fulfilling to him as an artist. When editing the video he takes special care knowing that there will be stories told to future generations watching the film that is being created. It brings a special feeling knowing that I not only can use my artistic skills, but also show sensitivity to others. David provides gorgeous videography, energy to the film, seamless expert editing, timelessness, cohesiveness and class to his videography. Receiving emails from couples whose wedding he has filmed is very rewarding. Especially when they let him know they appreciated his professionalism and abilty to keep them at ease. It makes all of the hard work worthwhile. The ability to tell a story with video is a skill that has proven to be rewarding on a personal as well as on a professional level. New trends are happening in the video field, one which is happening mostly in the boomer generation. It is a story that they want to hand down to their children and grandchildren…a personal family bio. It’s a wonderful new trend that he hopes to see flourish. The Wall Street Journal recently printed an article on it being an important trend that is emerging. What a wonderful way of you editing together your wedding video as part of your family storytelling as you get older. Something treasured to pass along for your family to remember, interweaving photo montages along with it, home movie clips and out-takes for fun. Word of mouth is the most powerful way videographers reach potential customers and it is always a pleasure to see a couple whose wedding he’s filmed be a guest at the wedding he’s shooting that day! David feels the final edited film should not only look and sound good, but also be entertaining and well-paced which includes music of the couples choice in select locations. Answering the question what makes a great video David answers… getting to know the people you are filming and reflecting their lives on film forever. tips from the looking glass

Pro Tip

To prevent smudges makeup artists apply all eye makeup first then add concealer and makeup.

By Managing Editor: Grace Crompton

Makeup artists know all the secrets to looking great - those little tricks that can be picked up only by living in the beauty world 24/7 as they do. Fortunately, they’re often as generous as they are knowledgeable. We spoke with some of the best makeup artists in the business to get their best out-of-the-ordinary tips.

try a colored eyeliner - Changing your eyeliner can make eyes look bigger and brighter, says makeup artist Tina Turnbow, who has worked with stars such as Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. “Try swapping black for plum, olive green or indigo,” she suggests. “Black can close up the eye and make it appear smaller, because darker colors make the eye recede. Some colors, even brown, can be softer.”

leave your lipstick in place - The MAC browset can be used to keep lipstick in check, says Senior Artist Louise Zizzo. “MAC Brow Set in Clear used around the rim of the mouth will help prevent lipstick from bleeding,” she explains.

im Kardashian and Kris Humphries were married in a lavish black & white themed ceremony. Kim had a tough decision, which of her three Vera Wang wedding gowns would she wear during her nuptial extravaganza? Finally her choice is revealed, a full-skirted, strapless “princess” ballgown for the walk down the aisle; a georgette mermaid dress for her first dance; and a V-neck, bias-cut satin gown with a circle skirt for the rest of the reception.

Three Wedding Gowns: Details! Details!

W

hen Kim Kardashian chose family friend Vera Wang to create her custom couture wedding gowns, she knew things would be picture perfect. What she didn’t know was which of the three intricate gowns she would choose to wear for her walk down the aisle. “I truly, up until two days before [the wedding] could not decide which to wear,” the bride admits. After seeking advice from friends, family and of course Wang herself the choice was clear.

K

ardashian made her grand entrance in what she calls the “princess look” gown, a ball gown with a full tulle skirt, basque waist and hand-pieced Chantilly lace appliqué on bodice and train. Along with her Lorraine Schwartz headpiece, she wore a cathedral length veil with handpieced Chantilly lace appliqué at the hem and a lightly shirred blusher layer. “It was Cinderella,” Wang tells of the overall look. “But Cinderella with a very sexy body. She has a very Liz Taylor or Sophia Loren kind of body and we didn’t want to lose that.” For the first dance, Kardashian went with something completely different — the gown that ended up being “my favorite,” she says — a sexier, Georgette mermaid dress with hand- pieced Chantilly lace appliqué on bodice. The skirt had hand-cut organza petals intermixed with Chantilly lace motifs and organza sprig embroidery. And lastly, when it was time to party, Kardashian made her third and final change of the evening into a bias-cut crepe-back satin gown with v-neck and circle skirt. She accessorized all three looks with custom Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Wang summed up the experience perfectly: “It was a wonderful process. The fact that she came to me for having a certain classicism mixed with modernity, I feel very honored.”

the style of the Aisle Just like everything else at Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ wedding, the aisle runner was black-and-white and over-thetop. The 196-foot long custom runner was created by The Original Runner Company, and featured a black border with damask-like flourish details inspired by the pattern on the couple’s invitations, and two Swarovski crystal monograms. You can feel like a star too! Order your custom designed runner by calling 973-744-7070.

Cake

let them eat... Popular Wedding Cake Traditions

The sweetest part of your big day will probably be your wedding cake, but wedding cakes aren’t just sugar and flour anymore. Today you can customize everything from the frosting, fondant, flowers and more. Shopping for your wedding day dessert can be more complicated than you think.

Price Shock

Wedding cake ain’t cheap, ladies. Be prepared to pay between $2.00 and $18.00 a slice. The more complicated the cake, the more you’ll spend. Generally, fondant is more expensive than frosting. Handmade detailing will increase price as well. Some brides use a dummy cake, which can save a bundle on the bakery bill. These gorgeous confections, often consisting of decorated Styrofoam, are photographed and then rushed out of sight. Sheet cake is then served to unsuspecting guests.

All Shapes and Sizes Wedding cakes can come in any size, shape or form from round to rectangular, topsy-turvy to triangular. These days you can choose a six-tiered masterpiece or even miniature cupcakes. Wedding cakes keep getting taller each year. If you want the height without the price, consider adding on a fake tier or two.

A Matter of Taste

Everyone has their own dessert preferences. In the UK, traditional wedding cake is made from fruitcake; in Korea, it’s made from ground steamed rice; in the United States, brides can choose anything from carrot cake to vanilla bean. As of late, brides have been passing on fruit-filled cakes and opting for more inventive flavors like chocolate hazelnut or the super-trendy red velvet variety.

Cake Décor

Today cake themes range from uber modern to homemade looking, vintage-inspired creations. Cakes can be covered in anything from crystals to floral arrangements. A huge trend these days is to match the cake with the bridal gown.

Frosting, Filling and Fondant

Contrary to popular belief, white wedding cakes did not evolve to symbolize purity. Back in the day refined sugar was not as prevalent as it is today, sugar was not easy to come by and white icing required the finest refined sugar. The whiter the cake, the more well off the family appeared. Today, as refined sugar is widely available, there are crazy cakes out there that can be customized to look like anything you could dream up. Lately, brides have been foregoing fondant in favor of the tastier buttercream option.

Let Them Eat Cake

After the cake cutting ceremony, the couple proceeds to feed one another from the first slice. This act symbolizes the mutual commitment of bride and groom to provide for one another for all of eternity. Make sure your photographer is ready for this Kodak moment. Eat cake and be married!

Beach Wedding Basics

Getting Started

I

f you’re looking for a beautiful natural wedding, a beach wedding is the perfect solution. And if you want to invite the whole gang, think about a fun wedding weekend and reunion at an activity-rich resort, beach, or lakeside town. Whatever you decide, beach weddings are often memorable, unique and offer many options. Here are eight steps to make planning your beach wedding a breeze.

scout out locations Choose a location based on your wedding style and guest list. Unlike a hometown affair you cannot always assume everyone will be able to attend, especially if you’ve chosen a beach that requires a journey for most people. You’ll want to compare facilities and, if you’re marrying on a private beach look into any permit fees, container laws and clean-up charges.

start early Start researching and planning your beach wedding as soon as possible. Not only do you have to reserve your venue, but fulfilling the marriage and potential permit requirements in Florida may take a few weeks. For example, some public beach parks commissions may require you to detail explicitly all pieces of equipment you’ll be bringing to the site. Remember that you’ll also need to have a plan in place for clean-up, which is one part of the wedding process you don’t usually need to think about when your holding your affair indoors.

ask the right questions Achieving your dream wedding means having all the information you need to make the perfect choices. Read our articles about beach wedding ceremony and beach wedding reception basics to guide you through the beach process.

beach weddings are often memorable, unique, and offer many options. 58 Florida Bride Fall/Winter 2011 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

be flexible Always have a back-up plan in place for whatever comes your way. If you need to be on a rain delay for a couple of hours, the rest of the day can still proceed as planned. For beach-specific information, call Grace at (954) 773-4525 to find the perfect planner to help you pull it off.

work with those in the know Work with a bridal consultant who specializes in beach weddings and/or a wedding planner based in the area where you’ll be married to help you navigate a particular beach’s requirements (these can vary by county and within towns). Planners also serve as experts in finding local vendors.

guide your guests If you’ve chosen a relatively unknown section of beach, make sure guests know how to find it and can traverse any boardwalks, rocky areas or grassy dunes. Be sure to place a welcome basket at the front of your ceremony site and goodies that will remind them of the setting - parasols or flip flops, for example.

arrive early Plan to arrive to your site a few hours early to be sure the set-up goes off without a hitch. Try to relax and stay hydrated, you don’t want to start wilting during the ceremony!

get it in writing If you’ve been on Florida Bride Magazine before, there are rules when dealing with vendors: Make sure you confirm all agreements in writing before you sign, so you know what you are getting prior to the ceremony.

Reception Basics

Beach weddings often have an aura of magic, one that’s as relaxed and effortless as the natural surroundings. It takes more than Mother Nature to put it together, how do you make it feel private and intimate? What kind of decor works best? We’ll help you through these considerations and more for a reception on the beach.

Take care of guests

Pick your venue

v

If you want to have your reception on the beach, you’ll need to do some research. Be sure to check weather for your particular location, what times of day the tides come in, and when the sun sets. In some places, it might be better to book your wedding at an indoor venue with beach access.

Have fun with décor Just because your wedding is on the beach doesn’t mean you must do the typical beachthemed decor. You can base your decor around tropical flowers or fruits, especially pineapples which are a symbol of welcome in Hawaii. Bamboo is one element that can help capture a natural theme, as are weaves with palm fronds.

v

If a certain dish is supposed to be hot, make sure it is, even if it’s being served outside. Don’t forget restrooms, public beaches often have public restrooms which might not be as clean or welcoming to your guests as you’d like.

Corner and Contemporary

Tuxedo Styles: Classic or Contemporary As a groom that’s still early in the wedding planning process, carve out time to spend with your bride to look at some of your tuxedo options. Whether you choose one of the classic tuxedo styles that Americans have used since the high society days of 1886, or a modern update that infuses formal wear with the passion of rock, jazz, and hip-hop, you can find a variety of options to look chic and powerful on your walk down the aisle.

Classic Ever since wealthy denizens of Tuxedo Park, New York started wearing handsome dinner jackets to their private clubs, gentlemen of distinction have celebrated good times by donning classy formal wear. If you go all the way and choose top hats and tails, experts recommend that you rent your garments for your wedding day. Since you will only be wearing that outfit once, splurge on the spiffiest rental tuxedo your budget will allow. On the other hand, a less fancy tuxedo in a timeless cut can serve you well for as long as you can maintain your waistline. If you think that you’ll attend more than your share of black tie events in the near future, a basic tuxedo might not cost much more than a weeks rental. Fashion experts suggest if you’re planning on buying a tuxedo for your wedding, you should choose a basic, elegant jacket and classic trousers. Remember that you can mix and match your accessories, so you can get more mileage from your tuxedo by wearing different ties and cummerbunds later on.

Contemporary Despite our attachment to the high society look immortalized by Fred Astaire, the tuxedo hasn’t really been with us for very long. In the spirit of innovation, New York, Paris, and Milan have reinvented formal wear for our generation. Because many of these looks are daring and extreme, they can be harder to find and much more expensive than more traditional tuxedos. Hugo Boss continues to make men look dazzling and powerful with sharp cuts of tightly woven wool. The Italian designers at Costume National meanwhile, had some fun with formal wear in their recent collection. Adding unusual patterns, colors and fabrics to the traditional repertoire, the new designs extend the spirit of experimentation that led to the birth of the tuxedo in the first place. While it may seem fun and glamorous to consider a trendy tuxedo for your wedding, you can quickly burn through a few thousand dollars to get your hands on the latest designs. Even if you can scrape that kind of cash together, your fashion investment might only last you a season or two before new collections render it obsolete. That’s why wedding experts highly recommend renting trendy formal wear.

Men’s Fashion Options for a Casual Wedding... Whether you love the island lifestyle, you’re eager to start your romantic adventure in a breathtaking setting, or you simply want to treat your friends and family to a low-key celebration, you can enjoy plenty of fashion options for a casual wedding. With more brides and grooms deciding to invest their wedding budgets on starter homes or longer honeymoons, a casual wedding frees you from the stress of picking out tuxedos and shining shoes. You’ll still want to look great in those wedding photos, though. Besides, the special event gives you a chance to shop for some fashions that you’ll want to wear again and again, especially if you’re holding the ceremony in one of your favorite settings.

The Club Look Whether you enjoy a daytime garden party near the back nine or you commandeer the back room of your favorite jazz club, you can still dazzle your bride with the right outfit. Choosing pieces that hint at traditional formal wear can set a relaxed tone for your occasion without losing sight of your special event. The designers at Perry Ellis America have released a new collection that blends the formality of special occasions with the laid-back feel of your favorite country club. Try wearing a corduroy blazer over a fishermans turtleneck and a pair of flat-front khakis. Or, you can blend a formal looking pinstriped jacket with a buttondown shirt.

The Beach Wedding

One of the all-time favorite locations for a romantic casual wedding, the beach offers you plenty of options to look great while keeping your cool. A linen suit might work well if your wedding location is breezy, but it could also wrinkle easily. Consider choosing something lightweight that won’t chill you if the surf douses it. The designers at Tommy Bahama prove that tropical fashion doesn’t have to mean loud Hawaiian shirts. You can select an island-style cotton-linen blend shirt in a subdued color with a subtle pattern. Match that up with classic cotton flat-front trousers, and a pair of comfortable deck shoes or sandals to create a great look for an island groom. On a really sunny day in the islands you can get married in a simple white shirt and a long pair of deck shorts, just bring lots of sun block.

OK Guys!

So, it’s your wedding too! Florida Bride Magazine has not forgotten that its not always about the Bride. The Grooms Corner has been created specifically for the Men. In our articles you will find everything the groom needs to know to prepare for his Big Day, enjoy. Wedding Stress: What Can You Do? The clock’s ticking, your mailbox is overflowing with RSVP’s, your nails look like moon craters! Don’t let wedding stress start your marriage on the wrong foot. Make time for a few new routines that will help you cruise right through to your big day. Write everything down, every time you think of a new idea your brain rolls it around until you do something with it. Keep a small notebook with you and jot down every to-do that pops into your head. Walk more, take twenty minutes every day to walk around the neighborhood or do a lap at the nearest track. Listen to upbeat music to keep the pace. Your heart and your head will both feel less heavy, practice breathing exercises. When you’re feeling stressed you really aren’t getting enough oxygen to the brain. Learn some simple exercises that will decompress you in any situation. Drink water, replace the caffeine and the alcohol in your system with at least eight bottles of water every day. Your blood vessels will relax, and so will you. Enjoy herbal tea, switch your morning coffee or your after work cocktail with a dose of healthy herbal tea. Your heart will relax and your head will enjoy the healing power of ancient herbs. Yogi Tea is available in natural food stores nationwide. Treat each other to a massage, escape with your bride for an hour or two at a nearby spa. Let trained professionals knead the worries right out of your muscles so you can focus on enjoying your wedding day.

Having a good hair day...

Planning your style

When it comes to choosing a hairstyle for your wedding there are a few rules to remember. The one rule to follow says Florida Bride Magazine editor Grace Crompton, is to select a hairstyle that reflects your personality. If you typically wear your hair in a casual ponytail or bun, your wedding is probably not the best time to try a formal, coiffed hairdo. If your hair is always perfectly arranged you should avoid a loose, casual style. The first step in deciding between the perfect wedding hairstyle is finding the right stylist -- someone who is open to your ideas and familiar with your style.

White Flower Hairstyle She wore similar flowers attached to a comb in her hair as a nod to the couple’s life together in Panama City.

Fabric Flower Hairpiece Instead of a veil, the bride tucked a layered, fabric flower into her vintage updo.

Chic Side Sweep

A deep side part and tousled chignon will look great on many different face shapes.

Layered down do You don’t have to choose an ornate updo just because you’re in a wedding dress. Curled layers and lots of shine can make this more basic style feel bridal.
