Downton Abbey Issue Letter from the Editor:

Here we go again! I am feeling and seeing all the smells and sounds of the holidays, and I am loving every bit of it! The uplifting spirit of the holidays with their sharing and caring reaches out to us all. Our Fall/Winter issue features the theme of Downton Abbey, an historical period drama which has been hailed as a global sensation and a “grand, cinematic experience.” I absolutely loved the dress I was wearing for the editor’s photo shoot. It was sooo gorgeous, I didn’t want to change it after. The film is set in 1927 and depicts a visit by the King and Queen to the Crawley family’s English country house in the Yorkshire countryside. Nearly six years ago America fell in love with the show and has followed it through constant changes, scandals, love, ambition, heartbreak and hope ever since. The show and it’s cast deliver wit, warmth, passion and a phenomenon that is, at its heart, the very core of humanity.

Pantone just released their Color Of The Year – Bleached Coral – and this time around it’s making quite the statement. Things to Avoid the Week Before You probably have a list of to-dos now meet the don’ts!

The week before your wedding is the time to take care of all those last-minute details. Pull out your favorite nail polish, because you’ll want to get a manicure a day or two before your rehearsal dinner. And don’t forget to deliver the final headcount to your wedding venue. But what about the things to avoid the week before your wedding? New Hair Color “Even if your colorist is the absolute best, avoid making changes to your hair within a week of your wedding,” says Paul Labrecque, hairstylist and owner of Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa in New York City. “You never know how the color could oxidize or how it will look with your skin tone.” If you want to refresh your hue without endangering your look, ask your colorist to put a clear gloss on your strands. “This will add a lot of shine and sheen,” says Labrecque. But if you do get mixed up with some bad color before the big day, you won’t do too much damage to your hair by getting it recolored right away—as long as there weren’t high levels of bleach involved in the process, says Labrecque.

Alcohol For something you sip, alcohol carries a ton of extra calories, so you may want to cut back even earlier than the week before your wedding. As for immediate effects, alcohol can make you look and feel puffy due its sulfur-bearing gases and other qualities that weaken your digestive system. What’s more, alcohol dilates your blood vessels, which can lead to wedding picturecompromising redness, says Debra Jaliman, author of Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist.

A New Workout “Stick to the routine you’ve been doing,” says Melissa Paris, a certified group exercise instructor and Lululemon ambassador. “Now is not the time for new moves.” Pulled muscles can take weeks to heal and you definitely don’t want to be too sore to get down on the dance floor. If your goal is to lose weight, make sure to start a new fitness program well before your dress fittings. And if you’re just looking for an amazing way to relieve pre-wedding stress, grab a friend for a quick walk or run in the park. “There is something about being outside with a friend that is so helpful,” says Paris.

Spray Tan Booths “Spray tanning in a booth may be a budget-friendly option for a safe, sunless glow, but there’s a good chance the color you get won’t match your skin tone as well as other fake tanning alternatives,” says Nina Patino, an aesthetician at Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa. Rather than stepping into a box—which can result in uneven color if you don’t hold your body just so— it’s best to have a specialist expertly apply the tanning solution so it’s evenly distributed and complements your skin color, says Patino. And don’t forget to lightly exfoliate beforehand. “The color will last longer and you’ll literally glow as you walk down the aisle,” says Patino.

Sleep deprivation can actually affect your immune system. “You’re more likely to get a viral infection if you haven’t been getting enough sleep,” says Dr. Frank Lipman, an integrative and functional medicine physician and founder of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City. Logging enough shuteye also improves your complexion, rids your eyes of dark circles.

There is no better way to extend your home’s footprint than by creating outdoor spaces. Small homes can take on an expended new meaning when patios and terraces are introduced into the landscaping design. Gardens become magical places when cozy, inviting outdoor rooms are planned. If you have a garden, don’t just look at it, live in it!

I call them outdoor rooms, as they blur the line between indoor design and outdoor living. Outdoor rooms need not be large in size, their impact comes from scale. Any carved out small patio, deck or patch of grass can do the trick. And it’s not just for suburban living—even city dwellers can do it, should they be fortunate enough to have a private terrace. (Truth be told, whereas suburban homes overlook opportunities to live in their gardens, often city folk overlook adding Mother Nature in and around the patio furnishings!) The key to designing any outdoor room is identifying the function, the amount of light it receives and the strategic pieces of furniture that will make the oasis complete. I’m all about usable entertaining spaces that offer an extension of your home for others to enjoy. (I’m not talking about a barbeque area in this blog, as they’re excused from being places you’d design for lingering.) Rosebrook Gardens is loaded with outdoor rooms. I can choose to entertain guests under the pergola, have cocktails in the back living room, or even take a cat nap on a perfectly placed hammock under the Hemlock trees. Truthfully, even two simple teak chairs can help a corner of the yard multitask into a morning retreat, sun bathing central, and cocktail area at sunset. If you build it they will come, as they say. The absolute key to your success is to never create these spaces with one person in mind—unless of course you hate people and choose to be single for the rest of your life. My exception? My hammock, where I love to zone out.

Don’t forget about outdoor architectural detail lighting to highlight trees, home details, and walkways. This week, I added a new spotlight to the front of my home and I was beyond thrilled to see it come to life. My neighbors took notice and called it Mar’s light show. Rosebrook Gardens has one more great design detail that shows off her beauty, and now more than ever at night too. Well, my MARtians, the outdoor room craze is not going away anytime soon. FURRY FRIENDS at the wedding

Do you want to have your best friend be a part of your wedding? No, I’m not talking about your maid of honor or best man. I’m talking about your pet. A lot of couples are including them in their ceremony lately. They can be part of the processional and include them in your formal pics after the ceremony. Before bringing your pet make sure you are allowed to have them there.

If the venue doesn’t allow them and this is an absolute must for you, check other locations prior to signing. Designate someone to watch over your pet, remember you will have your attention on other things like saying your vows for instance. If it is going to be a hot sunny day bring plenty of water, so they don’t get thirsty, and a snack treat. Make your planner and vendors aware there will be a pet attending your event and keep it far away from any floral decorations or décor that may get destroyed by a playful pet. If you have a pet that barks a lot you may want to reconsider bringing it to your ceremony, consider hiring a sitter for the day. When hiring a sitter make them aware of your pet’s personality. Another thing to keep in mind, some guests may be allergic to your pet and feel uncomfortable around them. In such a case you probably should make everyone aware that there will be a pet there.

Couples nowadays are including their baby in the planning of their wedding. We have gathered a few suggestions to include that adorable bundle of joy each step of the way. Though they may not be old enough to be a flower girl or ring bearer there are other ways that they can be a part of your ceremony.

Have your officiate do a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ceremony where the two of you make vows to your child to always be there and guide them.

Have your baby be a part of your engagement photo shoot. Coordinate with your photographer to create adorable pictures of all of you together.

In place of your bouquet carry the baby, then once you have walked up the aisle have someone up front hold the baby until after the ceremony.

Your save the date cards can also include the babyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s picture on them. Your guests will love seeing the new family together. You could also make a comfortable spot inside of a wagon and have someone pull it up the aisle. Decorate the wagon in your wedding theme.

What You Need: 2 oz bourbon, .75 oz lemon juice, .75 oz simple syrup, Red wine float.

What You Need: 1 oz cognac, 1 oz aged rum, 1 oz lemon juice, 1 oz simple syrup, 5 dashes bitters.

How to Make It:

Add ingredients to 3 ounces of boiling water in a mug. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a lemon wheel studded with cloves.

How to Make It:

Shake the bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice and strain into a double old fashioned glass over ice. Top with a red wine float.

How to Make It:

What You Need:

1 oz reposado (slightly aged) tequila, 1 oz mezcal (like Del Maguey Vida), 1 oz lime juice, .75 oz simple syrup, 1 egg white.

.4 oz sparkling wine, 1 sugar cube, Angostura bitters.

Apple Tart with Honey Ice Cream What you need:

Ice cream: 1 pint good quality vanilla ice cream, softened, Pinch ground mace or ground cinnamon, Pinch salt, 2 tablespoons honey. Tart: 1 (9-inch) tart crust, store-bought or homemade. Apple filling: 2 pounds apples (Golden Delicious, Granny Smith or Pippin), peeled, cored and thinly sliced, 3 tablespoons salted butter, melted, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, Topping: 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 pound butter, cut into pats, room temperature. How to prepare: Add softened ice cream to a mixer with paddle attachment, or mixed by hand in a bowl. Whip the ice cream for 3 to 4 minutes, increasing the air volume in the ice cream. Add the spices and the honey and mix for additional 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the mixer and put into a shallow pan. Freeze until set, about 1 to 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Arrange the apples, evenly in a ring pattern in the crust, starting on the outer edge going to center. In a bowl, add the melted butter, nutmeg, cinnamon and sugar and stir to combine. Pour the mixture over the apples. Bake until the apples have softened, about 30 to 35 minutes. Topping: In a small bowl, add the butter and sugar and whisk well until smooth. Set aside. Remove the tart from the oven and dollop with the sweet butter topping. Return the tart to the oven until the topping has crusted, about 15 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Top each warm slice with honey ice cream and enjoy.

"When my Nana was put on hospice, the nurse asked her what her goals were. She replied that she wanted to be at my wedding. They reluctantly told her they didn't want her flying anymore (she was nearly 103 years old) and her heart was failing. I knew in my heart she was trying to hang on to get there somehow. I decided to fly to her with my wedding dress, it was unaltered and didn't fit yet but none of that mattered. I may have lied to my entire family about where I was that weekend, and I didn't tell my friends so I could surprise everyone with these photos.

Her Spring 2020 bridal collection was one of her most intricate and challenging yet, consisting of gowns that required so much handwork and detailing that Wang said theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be difficult to reproduce. She started with the idea of wanting the dresses to look completely different from every angle, whereas many designers only think about two vantage points: front and back.

“What’s funny is that I do a lot of color for bridal, but never for ready-to-wear.” There’s nothing cloying about her pastels, though. Mixed in with the framboise and pistache hues were moodier hits of gray, sage, and deep burgundy; Wang called them “strange.” That wouldn’t be perceived as a good thing in any other bridal house, but for the fashion-forward bride who wants to look truly relaxed, a bit of strangeness would feel just right—maybe even a bit liberating.

They have been around for a very long time and usually has all females attending. A co-ed wedding shower on the other hand is for a gender mixed bridal party. You can add the groom into the mix, and who knows he may even like receiving a new barbeque! Having a coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shower still isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really popular, but it is on an upward trend and something you should know about. If you want to do something that is a little different with a personal touch then this trend just may be for you. In case you may be wondering how to go about planning for a co-ed shower, we have put together some suggestions for you. 1. Ask help from your bridal party and parents to execute it, bridesmaids and groomsmen alike so you get a good perspective from both sides. 2. proper invitation etiquette ! Y Some of you have been asking about what the proper etiquette is on writing invitations. We hope these ideas help to answer them. Your invitations need to be ordered well in advance of your wedding day. Approximately 8 to 10 weeks before your wedding date is a good estimated time to mail them out. 2 weeks prior to that date is when you want them to arrive to you so you can begin addressing them. Depending on your choice of invitation the ordering process may have to start 3 months prior to your delivery date so you can proofread, give them final approval and have them printed. Your timeline is key to making sure you deliver them well in advance of your wedding day. It can get a bit confusing sometimes on how exactly to word your invitations. The wording will set the tone of your wedding, how formal it will be, and they will have a sense of your personality. There is a different sound to “Mr and Mrs request the honor of your presence to” than “We are ecstatic to invite you to our daughter and future son-inlaw’s wedding and hope you will be there”. Set your own tone, there is no right or wrong way to word it. Just make sure you include all of the important information such as the names of the couple, where the ceremony will be held, the date and time of the ceremony, contact information, where the reception is to be held and when you would like the RSVP returned by. Addressing the envelopes by hand adds that personal touch. How long that takes depends on how many guests you will be inviting, and if you can get help from your family and bridal party. You can also hire a calligrapher if it is in the budget to do so. Whoever is addressing the envelopes will need all of the up to date addresses for your guests. If necessary, fill free to call or email them to get the correct information. Keep in mind that your wedding invitation is setting the tone and theme of your wedding day.

The reception was so stunning it took our breath away! From the hanging twinkle lights, to the greenery-draped tables, it was all perfect! There’s nothing quite so festive as champagne. Take your bubbly to the next level with a spectacular champagne bar that allows guests to create their own sparkling cocktails. Whether you’re hosting 25 guests or 250, these showstoppers are sure to keep the fun flowing all night long. Use these champagne bar ideas to inspire a bubbly station that puts the perfect finishing touch on your big day. Keep your guests flowing to your bubbly bar by designing a setup that’s easy to use. Use risers to create multiple levels, you might put champagne bottles on the top, mixers in the middle, and mix-ins on the bottom. a little bit luxury... Vista Verde Guest Ranch had extended a gracious offer to us here at Florida Bride Magazine to come and experience for ourselves all they have to offer to our brides and grooms. So, on October 2nd, which is typically in the middle of a hot, humid Florida hurricane season we decided to do just that. We shipped out our own Fashion and Beauty Editor Kimaree Beyrent to Clark, Colorado which is right near Steamboat Springs for a full report. Here is what she has to say about her experience there: While the fall offers a spectacular colorful drive from Denver, you can also fly directly into Hayden airport in Steamboat which is just 30 minutes from the ranch. From the moment you arrive, believe me, you will feel like you’re in a movie set. I didn’t ask what the ratio of staff to guests are, but it’s at least a 1:1. All the staff members are truly experts in their varied capacities, but they all have a uniqueness in the way they interact, almost like they’re movie stars themselves. Ok, on with experiences.

a little bit old west...

Day 1: The universe magically guides the decision making of the ranch hands to select the horse for you. I can tell you that the horses were very well matched to their riders. My horse was a mature female named Chalulah, like the hot sauce, and she was spicy! Chalulah knew what she wanted and was doing at any given time, and we bonded almost instantly. The horses are treated very well, and it shows in their free spirited, friendly and outgoing mannerisms. We arrive just before dinner around sunset. Upon check in, our bags were carried into a spacious, beautiful two-story wooden cabin, complete with indoor fireplace and outdoor hot tub with a view of the wild deer in the hills behind us, and, oh my, the sunset! They stocked our fridge and cabinets each day with more than we could ask for, including a fresh bottle of their best wine. The groups are kept small making it very easy to talk with other guests, and still keep the experiences intimate for a couple or group of friends looking for a cozy getaway. Sit where you like in the dining room and see warm smiles all around. October begins some of the ranches ”adult only” stays which is ideal for newlyweds, good friend gatherings, anniversaries or a much needed breather from our typical hustle bustle lifestyles. We had comical conversations with couples from all over the world, all exchanging helpful tips for various natural weather issues in our varied locations.

Taking a moment to address the food situation...Wow just Wow! The attention to detail and service here is like no other I have ever experienced. My friend that came with me being a vegetarian, is accustomed to the standard salad at travel venues etc. At Vista Verde Ranch they spotted her the moment she walked into the dining room to show her what options they created for her, the ONLY vegan there. Every meal, including deserts, and let me tell you, you will never be hungry there. The creations are gourmet-all-the-way. One evening the chef made me a vegan coconut chia strawberry pudding that was out of this world. Let’s not forget to mention the daily offering of homemade vegan cookies, the ginger and molasses will make your knees buckle.

Day 2: We decided after the morning orientation ride to take the horsemanship 101 class. Personally, I thought it was a good way to respect the animals by learning as much as we could about them, how to ride with their instincts and how to communicate with them. Other activities like fly fishing, hiking, leatherworking (which Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sorry I missed), and riding your horse to a yoga class in the woods (omg) are also available throughout your stay.

a place for adventure... The individual daily trail rides took our hearts to soaring new heights as the vistas were sublime. The wind was energizing and the air crisp while the lead wrangler engaged us in history of the line and background of the individual horses we rode. There was a palpable energy of ease and magic to every galloped step upon these paths that would make your heart sing in boundless ways over the beauty and sacredness of this very special land.

a place for rest... Nighttime activities are optional and include line dancing classes and open dance (in the barn!), and always end early enough to retire to a cozy fire in your cabin, or steamy hot tub, with a warm apple cider or glass of red wine (my favorite). The fall colors were breathtaking, and we were fortunate enough to have our last evening there during the first snow of the season! A good 3 inches fell overnight, providing a magical winter wonderland in just hours to wake up to. The kind staff hands had already de-iced and warmed up our car for us while we were checking out.

Being sick on your wedding day and feeling miserable is awful, so try not to wear yourself down prior to it. Stress is a big part of weakening your immune system, and if there is a bug going around try to stay as far away from it as possible. Here are a few tips we hope will be helpful:

At the first sign of a cold make an appointment with your doctor. Take plenty of Vitamin C prior to your wedding day, and Zinc is very helpful too, just make sure you eat something prior, it does tend to upset your stomach. Washing your hands is very important. Do it frequently. Try not to get too consumed with the planning process and get plenty of sleep. Yogurt is great, especially to have now since it has good bacteria, the kind you need. Add some fresh berries for an extra lift. If you lost your voice try not to speak too much, you will want to try to say your vows. Ask the officiate to point the mic your way so your guests can hear you.

Do not take any medications that will make you drowsy and follow any directions your doctor has prescribed to the tee. If your spouse has passed on you must explain to your children this person is not someone that will replace their mother or father, but rather someone that will continue to nourish and respect the family unit. Walking into the house with your loved one at hand and saying, look weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re engaged and are going to get married really isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the best idea! Rather let your children have time to get to know the other person and begin to accept them as a friend first, this will make the transition so much easier. Letting your ex know you have decided to remarry should be done by you and not your children. Expect them to have questions, they may not thoroughly understand what it means. Make good choices about how and when to announce it to them, especially if there is a move involved. They may resent leaving their friends and explain to them they may be having stepbrothers or sisters now. Plan a fun outing that all can enjoy, and where they will get to meet each other. Include the children in your wedding plans and do a child ceremony on the day of the wedding. Easing into your new relationship will assure a happy family unit.

A series of new patchwork floral prints and crochet cocktail dresses felt like fresh territory for the storied fashion house.

During a week of Ubers, Lyfts, and car services, Tom Ford actually managed to get the fashion set to trek down to the subway platform. The designer and newly-appointed CFDA president staged his Spring 2020 show in an abandoned subway station (Bowery, to be exact). And as only Tom Ford himself could, he managed to make the old public transportation stop both glamorous and cool.

For the second season, Tommy Hilfiger teamed up with Hollywood starlet Zendaya for another runway show to remember. Last season it was a disco in Paris, and last night the collection hit the streets of Harlem as another celebration of diversity and empowerment.

Jason Wu returned to the runway for the first time since Fall 2018, but it seems that his main sources of inspiration—florals—has stuck around since he last sent models down a runway at New York Fashion Week. Ralph Lauren transported the fashion set back to the Jazz Age—bringing forth a wave of glamour and glitz that’s been notably missing from New York Fashion Week. An icon of sophistication and graceful style, Carolina Herrera is a fashion designer, known for a unique sense of dressing, as well as for designing apparel for First Ladies, like Michelle Obama and Jacqueline Onassis. New York Times defined her designing as being elegant and not fussy. Herrera was born in Venezuela, 1939 as María Carolina Josefina Pacanins y Niño to the former governor and air force official of Caracas, Guillermo Pacanins and María Cristina Niño Passios, her mother. Her family practiced discipline and this is the reason she is highly organized and uses time in a very efficient and effective way. In 2009, she became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

MEET THE FASHION ICON SPOTLIGHT Herrara’s grandmother was a socialite who interacted with popular personalities and introduced Herrera to the fashion world by taking her to runway shows and buying her clothes from Dior and Lanvin. Due to this, Herrera understood the meaning of quality, beauty and classiness in terms of fashion. Herrera once said that her eyes became accustomed to seeing pretty things. Later, in her work this statement is reflected with full honesty.

In 1957, when Herrera was eighteen years old, she married a Venezuelan landlord named Guillermo Behrens Tello. She gave birth to two children, Ana Luisa and Mercedes. However, the couple later separated. In 1968, she married Reinaldo Herrera Guevara, who was a project editor at Vanity Fair. The couple has two children, Patricia Cristina and Carolina Adriana. In addition to this, Herrera has six grandchildren. She frequently met Bianca and Mick Jagger, and Andy Warhol at studio 54, this made her discover her approach towards fashion. In 1972, she appeared on the list of International Best Dressed and in 1980 she was nominated for its Hall of Fame. The same year, Diana Vreeland, a friend and Vogue editor, suggested Carolina Herrera to launch a clothing line. When she did, the collection was displayed not only in a friend’s house but at Martha’s boutique as well. Upon this success, she returned to her homeland from New York and raised funds for a formal launch of her line. It was in 1980 only that her first show took place featuring Iman, an upcoming supermodel. A year later, Herrera’s brand received media limelight in publications like Tatler, and Women’s Wear Daily. Her most notable clients have been Renée Zellweger, Duchess Diana de Melo and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. During the same decade, Carolina Herrera’s name was licensed by Puig, a perfume company from Spain, to develop and sell a line of fragrances. In 1995, Puig acquired her fashion company, retaining Herrera as the Creative Director. Then in 2008, the firm launched prêt-à-porter brand, CH Carolina Herrera. In 2011, Herrera’s daughters began participating in their mother’s business. Since 2012, eighteen official stores of her brands have been opened around the world and her collection has been shelved with 280 shops in 104 countries. For her achievements in fashion designing, Herrera received many awards, such as a Queen Sofía Spanish Institute Gold Medal, 1997; Gold Medal for Fine Arts by King Don Juan Carlos I, 2002; award for Womenswear Designer of the Year, 2004; Council of Fashion Designers of America presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award, 2008; and in 2012 she received the Style Awards Designer of the year, and Fashion Group International Superstar Award. Carolina Herrara is considered as a woman with an amazing personal style, design sense and good attitude.

Weddings Years ago, when your parents got married this was not an issue. Cell phones existed but didn’t come along with all of the social media and camera capabilities they do today. Couples now are having serious conversations about having an “unplugged” wedding. Should they embrace these modern times or ask their guests to please not use them especially at the ceremony. On a Positive note: Photographers and videographers can get their professional shots without having someone else’s camera in the picture. I personally have seen this happen, and the worst thing for them is after the bride and groom have been pronounced husband and wife and are having their first kiss a guest stands up to take a shot and gets right in the picture! Asking guests to put their phones away will get their attention focused on what is happening during the ceremony. Posting to social media tends to distract them from what is going on in the moment. Having your photographer post a professional shot of your wedding first is more flattering than an out of focus blurry one.

On a Negative Note: Photographers need time to edit their shots, and it can take a month or more to finally see your photos. Pictures that your family and friends take can ease your curiosity. The professionals you have chosen know the shots that need to be taken, and they will get them. They may be able to also capture some candid shots, but they can’t capture everything. That’s why a second shooter is good to have especially if you want candid shots. If a second shooter is not within the budget, then pictures that your friends take may be more candid.

What does a groom do? He plans the fun stuff at the party, like picking the cocktails. And the cigars. These days, the most popular months to get married are June, September and October; yes, October is still very much “cigar season,” as the weather is great. If you’re planning to offer cigars at your wedding – or at least, celebrate with a smoke of your own – finding the right cigar is a seemingly easy task, but there’s still a lot to consider. After all, a momentous occasion demands big decisions. Most grooms-tobe are swarmed with coordinating this special day; I know first-hand that some thought must be put into what you’ll be smoking. So I’ve worked out a formula for the qualities to look for in finding the perfect wedding day cigar, to make things nice and easy. Follow this advice and you’ll thank yourself…and so will your guests. You can apply this guide for guests, groomsmen and yourself, as you’ll likely be shopping for different types of smokers. Finding the Right Wedding Day Cigars! One of the biggest factors in serving cigars is having the right space to enjoy them. Ask yourself these questions: Is the venue outdoors? Will there be a designated area for smokers? How far away from the party will smokers be? How long will the reception be? Next, we look for quantity, price range, strength and size. Quantity: The most important aspect in selecting a cigar is ensuring you can get a large enough quantity to share freely, even to guests who’ve never smoked before. Know your audience but plan to put out at least 20-30 cigars for every 50 guests. Yes, boxes and bundles are your friends here. If you go the bundle route I suggest finding a wooden box or putting out a humidor or tupperdor, because scattering dozens of cigars on a table just looks sloppy. Price: Everyone’s budget will vary; it’s a fact. Planning a wedding takes months or years, so skipping out on good wedding smokes is simply a sin; but there’s nothing wrong with spending less on good cigars. If you know what your guests are going to like, go with your gut. As with all cigar buying, price isn’t everything and when you compare cigars to the big picture cost, it’ll make sense. Strength: Strength is tricky – you and your groomsmen may all be smoking buddies, but those guests? Not so much. The bulk of your cigars are going to the inexperienced guests, so make sure the bulk of your order is on the mellow-medium range. From there, you can pick a few singles for yourself, a 5-pack or 10-pack for the groomsmen or, if there’s demand, a full box for the BOTL’s on the guest list. Always be mindful of your guests because you’re not just the groom, you’re the host.

N EW SWORTHY WE DDING! New York love story CNN Reporter and Producer Haley Draznin met her husband Jason Leibowitz, a Blockchain consultant, five years ago, a real New York City love story. They were introduced during a mutual friend’s wedding at The Pierre, and found out by the end of the night that they lived in the same apartment building. Months passed and they would often run into each other in the elevator or lobby with flirtatious exchanges. It was not until their doorman encouraged Jason to knock on Haley’s door that the two started dating. Three years later they were engaged in St. Barths. It included traditional henna dye which is believed to symbolize fertility, Moroccan kaftans & jellabas & fez hats, traditional teas and Moroccan cuisine, belly dancers, and Middle Eastern performance by Avi Peretz.

The wedding date was March 9, 2019 in New York City. The New York couple wanted to evoke a vintage New York City theme to highlight their love story. Their vendors were incredibly creative in helping with this.

For the Save the Date, they commissioned a New Yorker cartoon artist to illustrate them with a New Yorker caption. The photographer had a great fashion aesthetic and the videographer shot parts of their wedding film in a 8mm style look. They found a unique venue that is part of New York City’s Queensboro Bridge/59th Street Bridge: Guastavino’s. It’s underneath the bridge and a canopy of tile vaults designed by Rafael Guastavino, an architect from Barcelona. The space is considered a New York City landmark. They added a large black and white dance floor to bring out the vintage feel and arrived at the venue with the wedding party in an old-school white trolley. They commissioned a Rothkostyle marriage license that also acts as a piece of art to hang in their home. Jason surprised Haley with a keyboard performance to Clock’s by Coldplay.

How M i l l enni al s a re Ch a n gin g We dd i ngs Engagement ring designer, Jean Dousset, surveyed 1,850 newlywed couples to learn more about the planning and execution of their “big day.” From phasing out receiving lines and religious ceremonies to shouldering the financial burdens of the reception, millennial couples have introduced a new reality for modern weddings: It’s no secret that millennials are choosing to do things differently than generations before them. When millennials do decide to get married, their weddings look different, too. Gone are the days of religious ceremonies, rice showers, and cans tied to cars, having been replaced by millennials with traditions of their own, such as first looks and sparkler exits. What other wedding traditions are millennials leaving behind? Jean Dousset asked these newlyweds to find out. When asked which traditions were part of your wedding? Wedding cakes, white wedding dresses, flower girls, and first dances were the only three elements that the majority of millennials (more than 50%) included. Everything else, from not seeing the bride before the ceremony, walking down the aisle with dad, using a ring bearer, tossing the bouquet, having something old, new, borrowed, and blue, wedding cake toppers, divided seating, and receiving lines, are all on the decline. Fewer than one-quarter of millennial couples used a wedding planner to orchestrate their big day. But the biggest non-traditional trend among millennial couples, was to do non-religious ceremonies and venues. Less than half of millennials said they had a religious wedding ceremony, and three-in-four couples said they preferred non-religious venues. However, most millennials (60%) are holding on to the time-honored tradition of seeking a parent’s blessing before proposing. From there, the average couple is staying engaged for 13 months before tying the knot. Traditions aren’t the only thing millennials are saying goodbye to. Less than one in five millennial weddings are paid for by the bride’s family – instead, that cost is more often shouldered by the couples themselves. According to respondents, almost half paid for their own wedding, and when they did, they split costs evenly. This includes the wedding dress, which 1 in 4 couples bought together. Other popular wedding elements couples say they split the cost with their soon-to-be spouse include their honeymoon (53%), photography and videography (46%), ceremony and reception costs (42%), and the rehearsal dinner (32%). When it comes to ushering in new traditions, it may come as no surprise that a new millennial wedding tradition involves technology. One-in-four couples created a wedding day hashtag, and of those who did, 90% said it was used by guests to document the day. Millennials have also embraced afterparties (38%), self-written vows (33%), having a “first look” (30%), being married by a non-religious officiant (28%), having non-wedding cake desserts (25%).

When considering the flowers that will be used in your bouquet, think of what your favorites are and what you’ll be using for the rest of the floral decor. Your bouquet doesn’t necessarily have to contain the same kinds of flowers, but can be complimentary in color or even totally different if you’d like! Ideally, this should speak to both the decor of your wedding and your personal style (which hopefully is the same!). Mix different types of flowers in similar colors for a unique look or use one variety for a clean and modern style. Don’t be afraid to inject color here so that it pops against your white gown! Your bouquet should be larger, rounder, and more detailed than those of your bridesmaids. Your maids’ bouquets can contain the same flowers as yours or can be more similar to the other floral arrangements in your decor. As with your dresses, the maids’ bouquets should never upstage yours! Master Class with Duff Goldman When his dream of slaying on the guitar in a rock band wasn’t paying the bills, Chef Duff Goldman turned to his talents as a classically trained pastry chef and metal craftsman and founded Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, MD in 2002. Duff and his intrepid team of cake decorators churned out cakes the world had never seen before: cakes with sound, cakes with smoke, cakes with motorized moving components, life-sized baby elephant cakes- no cake was too crazy to tackle. Duff-ism No. 1: Tool Around With the Right Tools You can’t bake a cake without an oven. But you also can’t design a cake without some of the necessary tools of the trade, Goldman explains. On his must-have list: a cake wheel, serrated knife (for carving), filet knife (for “getting underneath things”), spatulas (for spreading icing), food coloring (from a baking or candy supply company, not the cheap stuff in the supermarket) and cake pans galore. What about power tools, such as saws? Goldman says you might want to wait until you become a little more advanced. Duff-ism No. 2: Play With Your Fondant Another tool of the trade: fondant, the clay-like edible stuff that’s used as a covering for many a cake, giving it a clean look. But it can be tricky to use texture-wise. “It gets very weird very fast,” Goldman says. He advises that before a beginner starts applying fondant to their cakes, they familiarize themselves with it. “Make little creatures with it or see how long you can hold it in your hands before it melts,” he says, adding that the idea is to “figure out its limitations.” It’s also important to recognize that no two fondants -- and, yes, even pros rely on ready-made commercial fondant -- are alike in terms of the elasticity or durability. Another trick of the trade: Have shortening on hand -- preferably “a very neutral vegetable oil that’s been hydrogenated,” like Crisco -- so you can loosen up fondant that’s too firm. (Conversely, if it’s too loose, Goldman suggests using corn starch to firm it up.)
