Panel Stonewall to Supreme Court and Beyond

Jim Obergefell (he/him)

Anaiya Boutan (she/her)

A self-described accidental activist, Jim found himself in the role of caregiver for his partner of more than 20 years, John, as he neared the end of his life due to ALS. Their decision to marry took Jim to the Supreme Court and the landmark 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges that resulted in victory for marriage equality. Their story is captured in the book Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality, which is being adapted into a feature film. Now a purposeful activist, Jim is dedicated to the fight for equality not just for the LGBTQ community, but for civil rights for all.

Anaiya Boutan is a high-school freshman who identifies as Queer and Black. One of PPF’s 2019 Youth Advocate Leaders (YAL). She recently visited NYC WorldPride to honor the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising that kicked off the modern LGBTQ+ Civil Rights movement. Anaiya believes that most people “are the result of their environments, and need to actively communicate to help everyone understand.” This bridgebuilding approach is central to Anaiya’s leadership style, and was evident in her work last year creating Santa Barbara Junior High’s first-ever LGBTQ+ School Club with her friends.
