RAMYA PASUPULETI A 20-year-old is not just an actor but also a social media influencer who has amassed a large following with her content and her charming persona. She has portrayed a diverse set of roles, from a bubbly girl to a serious role. She being one of the top influencers of Hyderabad has created a community of engaged followers. What is a typical day like in your life? For me a typical day starts at 5:30 Am, where I meditate and plan my agenda for the day, I make sure that I don’t skip the gym any day because I’m a firm believer in a healthy body constitutes a healthy mind. I enjoy preparing breakfast, I love to experiment with new recipes every day, then I usually head for my shoot or promotion and I make sure that I’m always on time because I value time more than anything else, then I usually connect with my team over lunch with whom I’m launching my line of accessories very soon. I try to wind up my other meetings by 5 pm as usually my evening is occupied with spending time with family and my acting classes. 12 SEPTEMBER, 2021 TULIP

What does it take to be successful in the field you excel in? I have always aspired to be an actress and in the world of cinema, success holds a unique definition for every individual, for me success is all about creating an impact on society through my cinematic work. I believe diligence and honestly to oneself are key factors to success in any field and the same applies to the field of acting as well. What’s the funniest incident that happened to you? A couple of my friends and I decided to go out for lunch and couldn’t figure out where, so we started looking up some cool rooftop restaurants so we could get some cute pictures. We landed in one beautiful looking place by the lake, we decided to get there dressed all cute. Turns out we got catfished by the restaurant strangely. It was a super mediocre buffet place with children running around throwing food and their moms trying to get hold of them. We kept asking them to show us to the rooftop restaurant and they pointed at a kid with ice cream on his shirt with a super straight face. We decided to leave and go to a cafe which we knew was legit this time. I know in my heart I’m never trusting Zomato again. By this point, all of us were starving and I ordered a baked fish. As it got there and I made everyone wait before they touched their food to click pictures for the gram, I dug into my plate of baked fish and guess what, I mean there was no fish it was just a bowl of cream. I called him back to ask where the fish was and he said “I’m sorry ma’am let me get you the fish” just to come back and say I’m sorry we ran out of baked fish. What do you do in your free time? For me time is an asset, whenever I am blessed with the privilege of some free time, I try to take care of street dogs and provide them with a home, which you can often see on my social handles. Other than that, I sleep and sometimes have “Me time” where I read a book, rejuvenate and get maximum sleep. I value time more than money, so I carefully take care of the time I have. Are you into spirituality? Yes, I believe in the power of the universe, I consider myself to be a very spiritual person and that is what has made me start my own accessory line where I’m creating fashion statements made out of healing crystals, marrying fashion with spiritual healing. I have personally benefited from reiki healing and crystal therapy. Which is your favorite place in India and abroad where you would like to travel? There are multiple favorite places in India but I would love to visit Ladakh, Kerala, northeast, Udaipur. Actually, I would love to visit all the places in our country if I get a chance, talking about abroad, I want to do a world tour where I visit all places. What inspires and motivates you? People in my life, starting from my parents to my friends. When I see my social media every day some or the other thing inspire and motivates us, I look up to every individual who push themselves through hardships and who never give up. My mom is my biggest inspiration.

Rapid Fire If you are given a genie and have to make 2 wishes what will you wish? If I had 2 wishes I would ask for a world with complete safety for women and second would be for my dog to speak. What’s your daily dose of happiness? Coming back to my dog, playing with him is my daily dose of happiness. If you are left in a supermarket and asked to pick up only 3 things what would you pick? I would probably pick coffee, a bag of chips and chocolates. Food or Gym? Food and then gym. Stilettos or Sneakers? Want to be a stiletto girl but if you know me then you know that I am more of a sneaker’s person. What’s your dream role? “Eliza” from the Hamilton musical is my dream role.

Firstly, I must say that Hyderabad is improving drastically. I’ve been a foodie and loved exploring and experimenting different cuisines in the town. I must say I have a few restaurants and cafes that can never disappoint you with their food. These are a few underrated food hubs in Hyderabad. The friger co. has some amazing potato twisters, pastas & burgers. It’s a pure veg cafe but absolutely worth it. It is located near Begumpet. Panchakattu breakfast will wake up the South Indian in you with their delicious dosa & ghee idly. TIB the ice cream bakery has the best natural ice creams. I love their quality of ice cream, & honestly this place is underrated. Cravery cafe has really good baked chicken mac & cheese. Zozo pizzeria is a must for every pizza lover. They have some authentic, fresh & mouth-watering dishes. Sofrehh Persian bistro, I love their French toast, it’s one of the best in the city. They also have some really good bread dishes. Maguro loves their authentic Thai curry & the ambience. The spicy venue has my favourite apricot delight, Apollo fish fry & potlam biryani. The Roastery coffee house - brownie blend, chicken spaghetti in spinach Alfredo sauce, chicken paprika in mushroom sauce are my absolute favourites.

Manoghnya Vijaya, Artist

Considering how busy my schedule gets as a student and a young adult in general, Cafés have always served as the perfect getaway for a breather or just a break from the chaos. Hyderabad has a wide range of beautiful Cafés and Bistros that serve the best quality food and calming atmosphere. We come across so many new places every now and then, all promising the best of experiences. My current favorite is Farzi Café. Their menu is filled with fusion food and drinks, the place has a classy ambience and I love how hospitable the staff is! What else does one need? Be it a solo brunch or a weekend hangout plan with friends/family, Farzi Café will always top my list of places!

To Style Is To Conquer HARITHA LEVAKA is an Image Consultant,

Fashion Stylist and PR Consultant. She holds a bachelor's degree in movie making and music, and later pursued an image management course from IBCI. We had the chance to speak with her about her latest works. How did you get into fashion styling? After my bachelors, I dove into movie making. I used to work with designers and would be responsible for portraying the character as per the script. While working with them I started gaining interest in fashion styling. As time passed I realized I could collate all the knowledge from my experience in moviemaking and could use it in fashion styling. How long have you been working as a fashion stylist? I have been working as a fashion stylist for a year but the styling was never my academics. It has always been my passion to visually communicate through clothes and to make an impeccable impression. Do you work with celebrities as well? Yes, I do work with a few celebrities from the Telugu film industry. Overtime I have gained wide industry expertise. Can you tell us about the recent photoshoot you did for the Niraval band? My recent photoshoot was with the label named Amsa by Ankitha Verepalli who is into sustainable clothing like khadi promoting weavers with the band niraval. What was the inspiration for this shoot styling? My inspiration was from all the small-scale weavers whose efforts must be highlighted in our day to day fashion sense. How did you come up with the concept of khadi for a photoshoot? I aimed to deliver an environmental message that sustainability can be comfortably incorporated as to fashion designing, styling and to a greater extent khadi has always been traditional clothing with undoubted history. I believe it's high time to illuminate our clothing culture with lots of pride and comfort. How does sustainable fashion help us? As individuals, it helps us to be economical while not giving up our aesthetic preferences but in the larger picture it is environmentally friendly. How was the experience of working with the niraval band? Niraval is one of the oldest multilingual bands in Hyderabad. They are immensely talented and it was a pleasure working with this welcoming and friendly team. They are like family; each individual carries their style although khadi is a bit challenging when it comes to styling. They carried it well which became easy for me. It was like a picnic on the shoot with them. Are you planning on continuing with sustainable fashion for styling? Yes, the next time I want to deliver a social message through sustainable fashion styling. “Khadi represents an integral part of the diverse culture of our country, and it really can be a trademark style with amazing comfort in the future which can be worn by anyone! Haritha fused the idea of an outfit that many people believe is portrayed as a traditional outfit and put on a complete twist wherein she gave a modern touch to the outfit provided by Amsa with the inclusion of coloured t-shirts and sneakers, which worked well together! said, Niraval”

FAVOURITE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME! EAT ALL YOU CAN BUFFET (FRIENDS - JOEY)

We all know someone who has the appetite of joey. Someone doesn't eat to survive, eats out of joy. This person can eat all they want but will never gain any weight without exercise. That's on some good genes. As much as these people love to cook, some of them are gifted with the ability to cook as well. If they get obsessed with a new recipe or dish, they are going to make sure that you go nuts over it too!

AMBITIOUS OPPORTUNIST (MADE IN HEAVEN - TARA KHANNA)

There’s always a strong-headed female in a wolf pack. Women like Tara know what they want, and they know how to get it. They will climb any ladder, even if it burns them but will achieve what they want.

THE BOSS OF TOWN (MIRZAPURAKHANDANAND TRIPATHI / KALEEN BHAIYYA)

We have got a friend who has a crazy amount of connections. We also give them a funny nickname because of his reach. Some connections due to profession, some out of charm but they can get anything done. They make one phone call and after that, the job is done. Be it a last-minute reservation or catching a flight, they know how to get things done in under an hour.

THE LOVEY-DOVEY COUPLE (LITTLE THINGS- KAVYA KULKARNI AND DHRUV VATS)

This couple is as strong as a rock, they can withstand anything as long as they're together. Something funny about them is that we can't live with or without each other. Yet they always understand and know each other better than anyone else. Such a couple is often two different grapes that make great wine. 32 SEPTEMBER, 2021 TULIP

AIMLESS BUT SKILLED (SCHITT'S CREEK- ALEXIS)

SPECIAL |

Haven’t you come across someone who you realized can do great with a little guidance? Such people often underestimate their skills and experience. They believe whatever is told to them, which often is that they are great for fun but not for practical stability but the truth is these are the very people that are the best recipe for a great life. They know how to have fun; they have skills for stability and experience for practical living. Only if they find a guiding light.

THE ODD ONE OUT (THE OFFICEDWIGHT)

Isn't there one friend who doesn’t fit into any of society's norms yet is the most competent person? People like Dwight exist way too often, they are highly skilled and talented. They just live life in a completely different manner from normal which makes them the odd one out but the best.

QUEEN BEE (BOMBAY BEGUMS - RANI IRANI)

If there’s an army then there’s a queen too. We know people who have it all and can do it all. They become heirs of pre-ruling kingdoms or build their empires. Either way, these queens can certainly spin you around in circles and you won’t even know.

EXTRAORDINARY GENIUS (THE BIG BAND THEORY - SHELDON COOPER) There’s always one kid in each school whose IQ is higher than 120. Who memorized the Periodic table in sixth grade. Who can name all countries and flags? But most importantly they are gifted. They might look all academic but don’t think they aren’t street smart.

| SPECIAL “The show that has stayed with me and will always stay special is 'Anne with an E' on Netflix which is set in the early 1900s. The protagonist Anne is a red-haired Canadian orphan, she is an imaginative, high-spirited girl who speaks her mind. She wants, above all, to find a home with people who will love her. She goes to live with an elderly brother and sister in a house with green gables on a farm on Prince Edward Island. The show beautifully portrays Anne's journey of finding and building relationships, her love for books, her love-hate relationship with herself. The thing that I could relate the most with Anne is her discovery of feminism. Anne was an accidental feminist which later becomes her choice. It shows how life, people and relationships can be flawed but still be embraced. It starts with a little bit of stubborn Anne waiting for a family and ends with her becoming Anne Shirley Cuthbert. One thing never changes though she'll always tell you how her name is not plain Ann and it is Anne (she likes it with an E).”

Nikita Venkatesh, Sub-editor at Siasat Daily

“I would like to give my input on my favourite show right now, it's Rick and Morty. It's a sci-fi comedy series. My favourite character would be Rick Sanchez for sure, because of Nihilism. Nihilism is the attitude where you know all the reasons and science in the world and have the epiphany that nothing in this world matters. He sticks to this attitude and the entire story is about him doing dark things because nothing matters so he tries to find a reason to be alive when that doesn't even matter. Eventually, it's about finding life in a void full of lies and mystery.”

Nischit Mishra, Songwriter/Music Producer

“My all-time favourite show is Friends. I must have rewatched it a hundred times yet I can't get enough of it. Its iconic comic timing gets me every time. Although the show is a sitcom, it hit many points like adoption, starting life broke at 25 and shifting careers. And the best part is that all of this was possible for each character in the show because of their supporting friends. This show has my heart and it's like comfort food for my eyes.”

Salwa Ahmed, Project Manager at Flytta

“Elliot Alderson from the show Mr. Robot is a former cybersecurity engineer and a member of society (An anonymous hacker group). He suffers from social anxiety and depression. Elliot is an introverted, socially awkward person who holds in a lot of anger, mainly towards the society that he is unable to participate in. Elliot used to be a normal cybersecurity engineer during the daytime and a black hat hacker at night snooping into people's computers and gaining information about them. I liked Elliot's character as I can relate to him as a cybersecurity aspirant and his mindset towards this society. I, being an introvert can relate to his struggle of being a misfit as well as learning to accept it as a part of my character.”

Q. You've worked in Bollywood and the South Indian Film Industry. What's the difference you find between both of them? It didn’t really feel different except the fact that the spoken Hindi language differs from state to state. Film making remained the same irrespective of the language that it is shot in. Q. How did your career in acting start? Has acting always been a passion of yours? After high school, I had my first movie offer. I had to reject my first movie offer with a Kannada actor because it was difficult to convince my parents due to a family background in medical. Both of them wanted me to become a doctor. Much later, I took up another movie that was the Kannada version of Salman Khan’s ‘Wanted.’ So that’s how it all started. Acting has always been a passion, but as a child I was forced to focus more on the academics. Q. What is the turning point in your career? The movie, ‘Atharintiki Daaredi’ starring Pavan Kalyan in 2013 was the turning point in my career. It opened a lot of doors for me and I got a lot of fans following. I am really grateful to God and the team. Q. Apart from acting, what other major activities do you usually engage with? Social work and philanthropy interest me a lot. I like helping people that are underprivileged by using my influence in the right direction. Q. What are some projects that you're currently working on? I run an NGO called ‘Pranitha Foundation.’ Q. What's the recent item you striked off of your bucket list? I got certified for Scuba diving, a very basic level. Q. Tell us something that you have never told anyone else? I have started liking the whole covid-19 and lockdown thing. I get to spend a lot of time with my family. Lockdown is serving the society by just sitting at home, so I look forward to lockdowns.

Makeup and skincare fanatics So, my favourite makeup has to be from sugar cosmetics, it's super affordable and works amazing on my skin. I started my makeup journey with this brand, and will continue to do so! My favourite product from this is the foundation stick.

Makeup is an art that can either make your face or break it. As a makeup artist, I feel it’s important to know how to play with different colours and still make it look fabulous. I am someone who loves experimenting with colours when it comes to eyeshadows and my go to brand is “Huda beauty”. As a brand, they are fun yet sophisticated. From having the best eyeshadows (whether matte or glitter) and face palettes (highlighter contour) to the most tasteful and fun lipsticks, huda beauty has always satisfied my makeup needs. All her products are unique as compared to other brands. It’s a little pricey but the quality of the product makes it so worth it. I feel It’s a must have brand for every makeup junkie.

My favourite skincare product is the ponds light moisturizer. I have a normal to oily combination skin type and I do get acne very often hence I cannot use heavy or thick moisturizers to my skin as it needs to be free to breath whereas the ponds light moisturizer is working wonders on my skin keeping it light and doing its job. I would also like to mention that “ACNE IS NORMAL".

My favourite skincare product is mamaearth ubtan facewash. I have sensitive skin and tanning is one of the major problems I face. This face wash removes all the tan & brightens my skin. The best part about it is that it is made up of natural ingredients like turmeric and saffron.

Varsha, blogger @varshanath_

Skincare for me is a really important part of my everyday routine. I prefer to go with a minimal skincare routine which includes cleanser, exfoliator, moisturiser, sunscreen, vitamin C serum and a lip balm. Although I see a lot of YouTubers and influencers using a lot of skin care products, I do not believe in using excessive products. It’s not about the number of products you use, it's about using the right ones in the right way depending on our skin type. Minimal skincare gives your skin time to breath and heal. Besides, it also helps us live a sustainable lifestyle. I make sure to use products that are safe, non- toxic and organic. Skincare time is a time I truly devote to myself and it’s very therapeutic for me.

Two products I have always sworn by: Wrinkle lift anti-ageing cream by Garnier, Fit me concealer by Maybelline. Wrinkle lift is an amazing emollient cream that is so hydrating and creamy, melts right into the skin. Plus, it has anti-ageing technology so it can keep wrinkles and fine lines from forming! Although since it is a cream-based moisturizer, I wouldn't recommend it for extremely oily skin. The Fit me range by Maybelline has almost all amazing products that glide right onto the skin but the concealers in particular are absolutely a holy grail for me. They have medium to high coverage which can be built up, and super long lasting. Suitable for all skin types, with the right skin prep of course

What are some key decor elements that will elevate a room? Every space have a specific function, there are elements to fulfil that particular function. These elements can be furniture, lightning, wall painting etc. But most important is the focus and sub focus in that defined space, a perfect rhythm in design, colour, focus and sub focus can elevate the space. There are so many wallpapers coming out now, will that be the new trend instead of painting on walls? Painting or wallpapers though are competitors as they are used for the same purpose of decorating a wall but none of them can be depreciated. Painting has its own variety like colour and texture. While, Wallpapers have a lot of new collection coming up in the field of design. I would say that the environment, climate and application may decide whether to use a wallpaper or paint, both have their own advantages and disadvantages. How do I make a confined space look spacious? Organized way of designing, planning with proper proportion of the elements used and selection of colors are responsible for giving an identity to the space. It can make a space look as theme demands i.e., Spacious or Cozy. How does vastu differ from modern design aspects? Vastushastra and design are considered to be North Pole and South Pole in the present era for a designer or architect, while that is not really the case. Vastu is the Science behind design, what we as designers/ architects do is give a particular space a beautiful identity keeping the environmental science into consideration so that a user not only feels happy by looking at it but also can feel comfortable and happy while staying there. Fake myths are something that take us away from this science of Vastushastra but once we know the reality or facts it might be a lot of a help. Design may it be of any style: Modern, Classical, Ethnic, Asian etc. give a beauty that catches the eye but Vastu is something that puts the five elements of earth in a correct place. Rhythm of design and Vastushastra makes a space perfect, in short Design is the human body and Vastu is the soul. How do I choose the right paint colour for my house? Colors play an important role in the design language. What colour is to be chosen for a space depends on 2 main factors: 1) The colour what the user likes. 2) The colour what the theme/ design demands. We make sure that if the space demands multiple colour combination then the rhythm between them is also important. Then finally the shades of that colour are taken looking at the environment of that space, darker colors for making the space cozier or smaller, Lighter shades to make the space look bright and spacious.

RENU HASAN SIRAJ & RENU

Architects and Interior Designer Can we mix different metal finishes in a room? Of Course, you can, it is how you design with the finishes, it is just like Jewellery, you mix gold and silver. It all depends on how you design and mix. How do I choose my door hardware? This again depends on the deign if it is an openable door or sliding door the hinges are in brass or chrome depending on the rest of the interiors, if it’s a large door say 8’x 4’ you will have to use heavy duty hinges. What is the most ideal structure for a house in Hyderabad? Can be Column Structure of RCC/ steel structure or load bearing walls which depends on how many floors you want to go with. If it’s only one level you can go with load bearing walls, if you go higher it has to be in RCC columns. How do I calculate the number of tiles I need? Calculate the area of the place, where you want the tiles that is length and breadth will give you the Sq.Ft. Can floor tiles be installed on walls? Or wall tiles on floors? Floor tiles have to be non-slippery tiles they can also be used on the walls for cladding. You can also get the same tiles that can be used for floor and walls.

Are cement and concrete the same? Cement and concrete are not the same thing. While Concrete, which is used in majority of structures, is generally referred to as “cement”, the actual cement is only a part of the mixture that is concrete. Concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregate, sand and water taken in their respective proportions. Cement acts as a binding agent that hardens upon reacting with water and holds the concrete mixture together. What is the software used for designing? There are multiple software’s used for designing various aspects (Architectural/Structural/MEP etc.) of a particular structure. Personally, as a structural engineer, I have used STAAD, ETABS for designing a structure and AutoCAD for drafting it. How many types of Cements are there? There are various types of cements used in concrete construction, based on their properties, uses, and advantages, which in turn is based on the composition materials used during its manufacturing process. Some of the types of cements are as follows: Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC), Rapid Hardening Cement, Extra Rapid Hardening Cement, Low Heat Cement, Sulphate Resisting Cement, Blast Furnace Slag Cement, and so on. Which soil type is best suitable for constructing a house? Soil type in order of preference for construction purpose is Bedrock, Loam (mixture of sand, silt and clay), Black cotton soil, Sandy soil and Clayey soil. What is the difference between Concrete and Mortar? Concrete is a mixture of water, cement and sand just like mortar. However concrete also has gravel and other coarse aggregates that makes it stronger and more durable. Best used for support such as beams, walls and other building foundations i.e., structural purposes. Mortar which is a mixture of water, cement, and sand, has a higher water-to-cement ratio than concrete. Mortar is less durable than concrete and best used as a bonding element.

R. UTTAM KUMAR How can we reduce the environmental impact? There’s no denying that construction projects can have a considerable impact on the environment. The direct impact of construction of residential and commercial buildings and other types of infrastructure is due to the materials used in the project. The usage of environmental friendly materials, construction waste management to dispose the dust produced, usage of recyclable materials and finally expediting project on time helps. What are some of the common roof types? The commonly practiced roofs pertaining to the shape in India are flat and sloped roofs depending on the climate conditions. The other common roofs are variations of sloped roof. The roofs with respect to the material used are concrete, metal, asphalt shingles, slate shingles, green roof, clay tiles and the vernacular materials being used from age old times. Where do pipes lead and where does the water come from? The pipes in this case (Hyderabad) referring to drainage system usually leads to large sewage treatment plant, where a percentage of waste water is treated before they are discharged into water bodies or rivers. The water distribution system is contingent on the area we refer but given in Hyderabad’s context, we are mostly dependent on rain fed rivers through which the water is distributed by means of reservoirs, canals, tanks and pumping plants. Why do we have to leave gaps during construction? The gaps during construction can be of varying sizes and shapes depending on the requirement, usually a small gap is provided in slabs of large span structure for expansion joints at certain intervals which is filled with an elastic material to attain structural stability while avoiding cracks. A larger gap which can also be referred as ducts are usually given for service lines, while also acting as service maintenance area. What are the differences between built up area, carpet area and super built-up area? Built up area refers to total slab area of all floors of a housing unit excluding the ground floor. Carpet area has been redefined as per the contemporary demand, currently it refers to the total slab area of a housing unit including the area under internal walls while excluding area under external walls. Super built area refers to the built-up area of a unit and the additional common areas provided by the builder i.e., staircase, corridors, terrace and lobbies. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2021 51

Splendid Architecture of Hyderabad Wonders

The City Is known worldwide for its magnificent architectural historical monuments here is the list which we are cherishing its beautiful architecture.

Falaknuma Palace

It originally belonged to the Paigah family, and was later owned by the Nizam of Hyderabad. It is on a hillock and covers a 13-hectare (32-acre) area in Falaknuma, 5 kilometers from Charminar. It was built by Nawab Sir Viqar-ul-Umra, Prime Minister of Hyderabad and the uncle & brother-in-law of the sixth Nizam. Falak-numa means "Like the Sky" or "Mirror of Sky" in Urdu. The Falaknuma Palace was designed in western architecture by the Italian architect William Ward Marret. The palace reflects a rare blend of Tudor and Italian architecture and was built entirely from Italian marble. It has the shape of a scorpion, the zodiac sign of the Nizam. One of the highlights of the palace is the state reception room, where the ceiling is decorated with frescoes. The ballroom contains a two-ton manually operated organ said to be the only one of its kind in the world. The palace has 60 rooms and 22 halls. It has considerable collections of the Nizam's artifacts including paintings, statues, furniture, manuscripts, books, an extensive jade collection, and Venetian chandeliers. The dining hall can seat 101 guests. The chairs are made of carved rosewood with green leather upholstery. Burroughs and Watts from England designed two identical billiards tables, one of which is in Buckingham Palace and the other in the palace's billiards room The palace was the private property of the Nizam family, and not normally open to the public, until 2000.

Mozam Jahi Market

It was constructed in 1935 during the reign of the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan. It was named after his second son Moazzam Jah. The building is made of granite and has white domes, constructed in a style similar to that of the High Court. Mozam Jahi Market was constructed in 1935 during the reign of the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan. It was named after his second son Mozam Jah. This building is a great landmark of Hyderabad even today and the main landmark is built entirely in stone. Mozam Jahi Market is known for its ice-cream market now, located in a busy junction of Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Nampally Station Road and the Osmangunj Road. Charminar

FEATURE |

Charminar, (Urdu: “Four Minarets”) historic monument located at the heart of Hyderabad, west-central Telangana state, south-central India. The city, which is the capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states, was also the capital of the historic princely state of Hyderabad. The monument was built in 1591 by Muhammad Qulī Qutb Shah, the fifth king of the Qutb Shāhī dynasty, reportedly as the first building in Hyderabad, his new capital. Over the years, it has become a signature monument to and an iconic symbol of the city’s heritage. According to one legend, the Hyderabad region was reeling from a devastating plague at the time that Muhammad Qulī Qutb Shah was shifting his capital from nearby Golconda to the new city. He commemorated the end of the plague by building a mosque, which became known as Charminar because of its four towering and distinctive minarets, one on each of the building’s four corners. It formed the centerpiece around which Hyderabad was planned. Now regarded as one of the supreme architectural achievements of the Qutb Shāhī period, the Charminar is a grand architectural composition in IndoSaracenic style. It is built of granite and lime mortar with stucco ornamentation. The square structure measures 66 feet (20 metres) to a side. Each side faces one of the cardinal directions and has a pointed arch that is 36 feet (11 metres) wide at the base and reaches 66 feet high at its apex. A multisided column rises on each corner of the structure and, atop a lotus-leaf base, continues upward until it culminates in a minaret with a dome-shaped roof 160 feet (49 metres) above the ground. Each minaret is accessed via a spiral staircase on its interior wall and consists of four levels, each of which features a delicately colonnaded covered walkway around the exterior wall. Above the arches of the main structure are two stories. The first was once used as a madrasah (Islamic college) in the Qutb Shāhī era, and the second houses a small mosque. In addition to the mosque, the Charminar has 45 other prayer areas. The Charminar’s roof and minarets afford panoramic views of Hyderabad, notably the historic Golconda Fort to the west and the bustling Lad Bazaar— adjacent to the Charminar—which is famed for its traditional lacquer bangles studded with coloured glass and stones.

Chowmahalla Palace

Hyderabad State in Hyderabad, Telangana, India.[1] It was the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty and was the official residence of the Nizams of Hyderabad while they ruled their state. The palace was built by Nizam Salabat Jung.[2] The palace remains the property of Barkat Ali Khan Mukarram Jah, heir of the Nizams. Other members of the Hyderabadi Nizam family have also wed here. The word chār or chahār, and its variation chow, means "four" and the word mahal means "palace" in Urdu, Hindi and Persian.[5] All ceremonial functions including the accession of the Nizams and receptions for the Governor-General were held at this palace. While Salabat Jung initiated its construction in 1750, it was completed by the period of Afzal ad-Dawlah, Asaf Jah V between 1857 and 1869. The palace is unique for its style and elegance. Construction of the palace began in the late 18th century and over the decades a synthesis of many architectural styles and influences emerged. The palace consists of two courtyards as well as the grand Khilwat (the Dharbar Hall), fountains and gardens. The palace originally covered 45 acres (180,000 m2), but only 12 acres (49,000 m2) remain today. The palace was restored between 2005 and 2010 under the patronage of Princess Esra. Though the need for the University for the Hyderabad State was felt, both by the intelligentia and the people for a long time, the initiative came from a civil servant, Sir Akbar Hydari, who was then the Home Secretary to the State Government. Sir Hydari, in a memorandum to the Education Minister in Early 1917, emphasized the need to establish a University of Hyderabad with 'Urdu' as the medium of instruction "as it is the language of the widest currency in India, official language of the State, and it is a language which is understood by a vast majority of the population of the State." He believed that higher education must have its foundations deep in national consciousness. The propitious moment, however, came a few months later on 26th April, 1917 when a Firman was issued for the establishment of the University. The Firman also detailed the 'Mission' and 'Objectives' of the University to be that: the ancient and modern, the oriental and occidental arts and sciences are synthesized in such a manner that the defects of the present system of education are rectified the ancient as well as modern methods of physical, intellectual and spiritual education are to be fully utilized along with an effort for the propagation of knowledge, the moral improvement of the students is regulated on the one hand, and research work of a high order in all branches of knowledge is conducted on the other. Though the medium of instruction of the University was 'Urdu', an Aryan language, that has direct kinship with other languages of the country, instruction of English, as a language, was made compulsory for each student.

Paigah Tombs

The style of architecture of the Paigah Tombs is an amalgam of Mughal and Moorish styles resulting in a unique synthesis. The crypts, made of lime and mortar, have intricate marble inlay work and stucco reminiscent of Granada and Seville in Spain. Some of the most influential families of the Hyderabad aristocracy were the families of the Paigah. The Paigah nobles were believed to be richer than the Indian Maharajah and earned the rights to solely manage their courts, palaces and armies that would often go up to thousands of soldiers. The English equivalent for the word Paigah actually means 'right hand man' or 'footstool'. The tombs are spread over 30-40 acres and are dedicated to the Paigahs, the consorts of the Paigahs and the daughters of Nizams. The Paigah tombs are very famous mausoleums that hold the caskets of the entire Paigah fraternity. The complex marble structures at the complex and the palatial entrances are a window into the wealthy, imperial past of the Paigahs. Apart from the intricate marble works, the tombs also illustrate the family tree of the royal families, along with chants and tributes etched on the epitaphs. Scroll down for more. The tombs were constructed in 1787 by Nawab Taig Jung Bahadur and later refurbished by his son, Amir E Kabir. The tombs were built as final resting places for the several generations of the Paigah nobles such as Sir Khursheed Jah, Sir Vicar-ul-Umra, Sultan-ul-Mulk and Zaheer yar Jung to name a few. The tombs are magnificent marble structures festooned with stucco work, Rajasthani and Mughal patterns. The tombs are unique for each royal, some perforated with family tree screens and the others decorated with Persian, geometrical designs, portraying the great craftsmanship of the time. At the entrance of the Paigah Tombs, the tomb of Teng Jung can be seen, exquisitely designed with lattice work and shadowed by a huge canopy. The white marble and the semi-circular arches stand out and are a dazzling sight for those who are visiting the tombs for the first time. 'Jali' works add to the splendor of these magnificent tombs, reflecting the aesthetic, artistic taste of the nobles. 54 SEPTEMBER, 2021 TULIP

Qutub Shahi Tombs

The grandeur of the tombs is shielded by the majestic, landscaped gardens of Ibrahim Bagh. The styles of the tombs are perhaps, the most important reason why thousands of tourists flock the resting places of these Golconda rulers. One will be able to see Hindu, Persian, Pathan and Deccan styles of architecture. As a result, you will be able to spot the amalgam of the Indo-Saracenic entrances, Persian minarets, domed structures and intricately designed columns. Inside, the tombs differ in size and number. One of the most modest looking tombs belongs to the founder of the Qutub Shahi dynasty himself-Sultan Quli Qutubul-Mulk. Simple designs and geometrical symmetry are probably the only patterns that glaze his sarcophagus. However, one of the most impressive tombs belongs to the founder of Hyderabad, Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah and rises to a height of 42 meters and protected by a large dome. Minarets and ornamental parapets complete the Islamic architecture and his tomb. The other tombs are still awe-inspiring in their own right. False openings, central pillars and two-tiered terraces all form an important part of the architecture of the other tombs here. The corridors of the famous Qutub Shahi tombs are famous for its IndoSaracenic style of architecture. Pointed arches and 28 openings add to the kingly architecture of the Qutub Shahi Tom. The Qutub Shahi Tombs were planned and built by numerous monarchs who ruled the city and the state during the 18th century. Lying two kilometers from the Golconda Fort, the Qutub Shahi Tombs are built to Persian, Hindu and Pathani styles of architecture. Located in the heart of Hyderabad, these tombs are a famous landmark in the city. Domed structures, terraced gardens, intricate parapets and exquisite ornamentation can all be found at one place. What's more, the Deccan Festival is held at the Qutub Shahi Tombs every year, presenting an opportunity for all those who want to witness the architectural and engineering marvels of the 18th century. Small and big sarcophagi can be found here, although only a few of them remain and are open to public now. These monuments are not only known for its splendid artistry and sprawling gardens, but is also known for the countless tombs of the last standing royals of Golconda.

Errum Manzil

The mansion is located atop a hillock known as Erragadda or "red hill" in the native Telugu language. For this reason, nawab Fakhrul Mulk decided to name the new palace "Iram Manzil" (Persian for 'Paradise Mansion'), because the Persian word 'Iram' meaning 'Paradise' sounds like "Erram," the Telugu word for "red." He also got the building painted a shade of red in order to emphasize the link, and so you had the red-coloured Erra Manzil on top of Erragadda hill. The nawab intended that the mansion be known by two similar-sounding names: 'Iram Manzil' for the Persian-friendly Muslim nobility of the state and 'Erram Manzil' for the local Telugu people. In time, the latter name has prevailed, and "Erra Manzil" is now the official name of the palace. Irrum Manzil was used for royal banquets and other grand events. Later, the palace was taken over by the Government to be used as a records store-house. After some years it was again transferred into the hands of Public Works Department. Presently this palace houses offices of the Engineers-in-chief and the Chief Engineers of the Roads and Buildings and Irrigation/ Command Area Development Departments. Built in the Indo-European Baroque style of architecture, during its heyday the palace had over 150 rooms furnished with Louis XVI furniture, ninehole golf course, polo ground, stable for horses and a dairy farm. The palace was full of stucco and ornamental works. The palace used to overlook the Hussain Sagar, but this view has now been blocked by other buildings. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2021 55

Golkonda Fort

The name 'Golconda' originated from the Telegu words 'Golla' and 'konda', which means "shepherd's hill". The 10 km radius from Golconda to outer Hyderabad was once a market city known for its trade of diamonds. The diamond, Darya-e Nur, meaning 'sea of light', measuring 185 carats and now in Iran, was mined here. Other renowned diamonds namely Kohinoor diamond, Hope diamond and Regent diamond are believed to have also been mined here. The fort was built in 1143 AD by the Kakatiya rulers and was later seized by the Bahamani kingdom in 1364 AD. This was later fortified by Quli Qutub Shahi in 1507 AD as a structure for defense, which led to the fort acquiring an important role in the political map of India. Golconda fort is famous for its numerous halls, royal apartments, parade grounds and mosques. The fort has eight gates with the main gate being Fateh Darwaza which marked the victorious march of King Aurangzeb. The door is of 13 ft. width and 25 ft. length and was built with steel spikes to protect it from elephants. The Balahisar Darwaza is yet another magnificent structure. Its architecture is also the embodiment of Nawabi culture and style. The eastern gateway is the biggest gate and the only entrance open to visitors now. Constructed on a hill, this intelligently planned architectural splendor has excellent ventilation which used to be a huge respite during the summers for the royals. It is believed that is an underground tunnel which starts from Durbar Hall in the fort to the foothills. 56 SEPTEMBER, 2021 TULIP

Spanish Mosque

Built in 1906 by ViqarUl-Umra (who also built the Falaknuma Palace), the Spanish Mosque is evidently a unique piece of architecture in Hyderabad. Unlike the bulbous domes characteristic of regular mosques, it has Moorish architecture along with aspects of Islamic design. The exterior and interior of the Spanish Mosque are mostly similar to the Cathedral–Mosque of Córdoba in Spain and Jama Masjid Gulbarga, Karnataka, India. It shows state-of-the-art interiors and architecture. It is also known as the Mosque of the Moors, due to its unique Hispanic (Moorish) style of architecture and is said to be one-of-its-kind in India. The stand-out feature is the spires instead of the usual minarets or domes; they give this mosque a church-like appearance. Right for the inception this mosque is maintained and managed by the heirs of Paigah Amir Sir Viqar-ul-Umra.

Indian Literature and Its languages Literature is the heart and soul of every country. It molds society and plays a major role in developing society. It can be said that Indian literature is rich in diversity just like the land of India. Indian literature is home to many languages like Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Urdu, Bangla, to name a few. Let’s see a few of these languages and their authors. 58 SEPTEMBER, 2021 TULIP

-By Umera Riyaz

As we dive into Bangla Literature it's hard not to mention Rabindranath Tagore. His work was quite intriguing. He spoke more without conveying much in his work. His was unlike others and it led him to achieve the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913 as the first non-European. Even to this day his works are adapted for Short films.

Next in line we have Urdu

Literature, we cannot talk about Urdu without the mesmerising Mirza Ghalib and his poetry. In his Ghazals, he wrote about love, life and even philosophy. He had learnt Persian through an Irani tourist who had stayed with him. The emporer In Bahadur Shah Zafar in 1850 gave him the title of "Dabir-ul-Mulk". He also added to it the title of "Najm-ud-daula". His ghazals are a huge part of Urdu literature and are still widely received. As funny as it may sound but the language English too, It was part of Indian Literature. Many authors like Ruskin

Rabindranath Tagore

Bond, Arundhati Roy and Vikram Seth. Have Mirza Ghalib

written their work in English. English literature of India is widely read here and abroad as well. Many Indian authors have been published under the label of penguin as well. Today English novels are a huge part of literature as readers demand it.

Present Time Indian literature has changed since the 2000, as writers and readers shifted to the language of English. It has given birth to many authors like Chetan

Baghat, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth, Durjoy Dutta and many more. The genre and

Arundhati Roy

storylines changed with time too. Today Indian literature talks about social media, bullying, harassment, caste issues, internet, corporate life, college students etc. Literature became more modern with time.

Ruskin Bond

Although many people like to point out the lack of quality in this literature. Others say that this isn't modern, as people who read literature in the 80s might find 90s literature modern. It’s just that everything moves forward with time. And literature is trying the same, trying to fit in with today. Many say literature changes and come back to where it began. Whatever may happen tomorrow, we can't deny the fact that literature has impacted living in a huge way.

| FEATURE That was a bit of a softer note on literature in India. Let's hear what the people of Hyderabad have to say about it.

“There's nothing more encompassing of the Indian literary scene than Rabindranath Tagore's writings. Tagore is an all-literature man, and his writings comprise traditional and modern Indian values and ideas at the same time. Matchless idioms, terrific style and storylines are what the current Indian writers need to directly pick up from him. Also, Dalit history and literature are something I believe is rarely talked about under Indian literature. Books like Karukku, My Father Balaiah, God of Small Things are ones that helped me learn better. Now there's a lot of Dalit non-fiction to explore.”

Apparasu Sruthi, Student

“A good book for me is one which makes your heart want more and triggers your brain. I like books based on myth busting fictions or mystery thrillers. Two of the best books which I personally love is The Shiva Trilogy by Amish Tripathi and Crooked house by Agatha Christie. They are so well layed down from the introduction to the characters to the flow of its story. While one makes you want more the other hits you on your sixth sense making you think what's next.”

Akash Pandey, Artist

“India has always been celebrated for its art and literature. The contribution of new age Indian authors to English literature is only an ammunition in favour. Be it compassionate and valiant transgender protagonists like, Anjum from The Ministry of utmost happiness by Arundati Roy, or the gentle and poise, relatable characters likes Lata Mehra from A suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, be it witty, engaging and honest plots by Khushwant Singh or the charming stories that leave you enchanted by Ruskin Bond, be it Aravind Adiga and Kiran Desai winning the Man Booker Prize or soothing storytelling by R K Narayan and Sudha Murthy that speak to the inner child in you, Indian authors clearly marked a territory in World literature whilst portraying the diversity of India. From secularism to romance, humour to psychological fiction, there is a book for everyone by Indian authors today.”

| WELLNESS

How do I deal with work stress and anxiety? I’m not able to perform as much as I want to. Work life balance is very important and especially with the covid-19 pandemic work from home has become the norm, which means that the lines between work and home are very blurred. It's important that you not only stick to a routine for work but you also stick to a routine for play, take up a few activities like exercise yoga have a good diet and be active. Focus on creating opportunities to get a break from work and as well as to bring some balance into your work life. Why do I see myself in a negative light? It’s normal to feel low at some points in our life and we are all currently going through a very negative situation collectively, things which wouldn’t normally impact us as much would be impacting us more. Everybody feels negative about themselves and underestimate themselves, studies have shown that people tend to rate themselves more negatively than others would. Keeping all this in mind remember that you are the best cheerleader for yourself, think about yourself from a third person’s perspective and realise or notice that there’s ways in which you are more important to other people than you realise, everybody has good and not so good qualities but it's all about rejoicing in yourself and cultivating what you know about yourself. How do I deal with the existential crisis the pandemic is putting us through? The first step is to acknowledge it, that yes we are in a huge crisis and its effecting each one of us personally in a very different way, some people may have experienced significant personal losses while some don’t, it throws us into a confusion about where we are and where we want to go, these are the two aspects of an existential crisis, it would be helpful to look at this as an opportunity to get more in touch with yourself. Existential crisis usually means that it's a gentle nudge from your mind or heart to look within and there are some practices that can help you do this either speak to a professional or do some meditation or reading. Different people have different ways of dealing with it and working through a crisis but look within and figure out what you want, where you are and where you want to be and be gentle with yourself if you can’t figure it out it’s okay, sometimes the whole process takes time. Why do I keep losing interest in something I like? It’s good that you know what you like a lot of people still struggle with that. It’s a myth that we will always have to have the equal level of passion, excitement or something that we do, sometimes it’s good to break the monotony and try new things that you may not have considered before when we know we like something we tend to stick with it and we tend to get comfortable, maybe take a break from it and go back, it might be refreshing and it would also help you see things from a different perspective. How to break patterns? Patterns are found out of habit and habit is found out of patterns, this means that when you do something repeatedly and you get rewarded for it, it forms a pattern, other behavioural patterns can include sleeping in or the ways we interact with people so in the short-term patterns serve the purpose they make us feel good, they help us avoid uncomfortable situation but in the longer term it doesn’t work so start with small changes, with your routine, changes which are achievable, set small achievable goals, it’s a good way to break out of patterns and it’s okay if you fail you can always get back to it and try again. Why am I so confused and doubtful these days? Confused and doubtful may be due to feeling overwhelmed, burnout issues, relationship stress. Regardless of the situation use problem solving strategies: • Identify problem and define it • Brainstorm strategies • If one doesn’t work, try another • Find something that works and stick to it. How do I deal with the loss of a loved one either through covid or either wise? Grieving is a process with different stages. First stage is shock and denial then anger, then individuals go through bargaining, finally they despair or feel low and end with acceptance. Give yourself time, don’t deny emotions, it’s okay to cry or despair, try to work on building a world without the person and realize it’s not so bad, it takes time. Why don’t I have consistency? When you go with habits or patterns, in the short-term it serves the purpose they make us feel good, they help us avoid uncomfortable situation but in the longer term it doesn’t work. How do I deal with a breakup it’s making me lose interest in everything I used to previously enjoy, my hobbies, spending time with family and friends. Remember it’s just a person and no one can make you feel this way without your permission. Grieve as long as you need to, even breakup is a loss but focus on looking forward, not look back. Now a days when you go to a psychiatrist Without knowing your issue properly they prescribe you with heavy doses of anxiety, depression and sleeping pills which makes our mind numb. We go to them to get a solution for our problems but they make it even worse. Is it right to keep youth on heavy doses of pills, which makes their brain numb? Medication is prescribed in cases where it is determined that the benefits of medication are greater than possible side effects. No medication should make you feel numb. Please consult your psychiatrist and see if the medication should be titrated. Rajeshwari Luther, Consultation Charges: 1200 , Address: Hope Trust, Banjara Hills 62 SEPTEMBER, 2021 TULIP

Aries This month is not without its challenges, Aries. You will need to show a great capacity for adapting, especially at work, but you will benefit from doing so. It’s also important that you show gratitude right now—you are not one to give thanks easily, but it will do you good.

Cancer You’re enjoying a little respite right now; it’s warm and sweet, and it feels good. Unfortunately, though, it’s as fleeting as it is enjoyable, because playtime is over as of the 11th. But at least there will be no regrets— you’ll have stored up enough serenity for the next two months.

Libra Your eternal thirst for beauty, peace and balance within will be wonderfully quenched this month. Not only will you feel as if you’re in your element (thanks to seven friendly planets in your sign) but you’ll also want to give your best to your loved ones, who will be asking for more. Be prepared.

Capricorn “Back to school” this year isn’t going to be quite what you hoped it would be. Things will get stuck, tugged and dragged out—which isn’t great for your controlfreak nature. But what if it’s a test—a way to force you to let go a little and, in turn, boost your confidence? Maybe it won’t be so bad in the end.

Taurus

Gemini

I love it when Uranus, the unpredictable planet of possibility, electrifies a sign that’s as set in its ways as yours is. It means that something in you is more open to adventure. Ready to take some calculated risks? Go for it—you won’t regret it.

If you’re to have a successful start to autumn, you can’t spread yourself too thin; this might be a challenge because you’ll be curious about everything and find it hard to resist social events and new opportunities. But once you’ve refocused, you’ll be proud of having curbed some of those trivial impulses.

Leo

Your new year, which arrives with your birthday, will start under clear skies. From the beginning of the month, your core qualities—perseverance, elegance and a strong sense of justice—will strengthen your desire to build something solid and lasting. This will apply to love affairs as much as it will to work.

Virgo Despite all the kindness in the world, there are some things you can only learn the hard way—like humility and perseverance. So, before you suffer a major setback or a brutal rejection, work on these essential virtues without delay.

Scorpio Thanks to the conjunction of Venus and Mercury in your sign until September 10, you will have an irresistible charm for the first part of the month. And from the 16th, your impressive powers of persuasion will be coupled with the energy you need (thanks to visiting Mars) to finally take action on something you’ve been avoiding.

Aquarius Bolstered by the cluster of planets in Libra (a supportive sign), you’ll have wings this month. Better still, you’ll know how to use them. The only downside? Beware of illusions. Being a visionary is good, but keeping one foot on the ground is even better.

Sagittarius No more hiding behind your mountain of work to avoid closeness. Yes, you fear intimacy, and it’s a source of anxiety for you, but it’s okay to take things slowly. It’s up to you to reveal yourself as you see fit— you just have to decide when and how.

Pisces Energized by the Sun in Virgo, you now have the drive to put your ideas and your life in order. Feeling both light and enlightened, you’re ready to attack the new school year. Use this energy to carry out a project that’s important to you—it will help a lot.
