TULIP - MAY, 2020 21

| SPECIAL

Haleem With The Khans What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Hoor: The main purpose of Ramadan is to come close to Allah, worship him, seek mercy and refuge. It is the month which purifies Muslims from bad deeds if it’s spent the way it’s commanded.

How is this year of Ramadan in quarantine going to be different from that of every year? Ruqaiyyah: Although I do want this Pandemic to end and have my freedom back, at the same time, it’s been a rapture to have abundant time for worship in Ramadan. I am working from home which means I don’t have to fight traffic to get home from the office and that saves plenty of time. (Sigh) What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life and diet? Ruqaiyyah: I try hard (haha) to lessen the use of my phone for unimportant things and spend more time worshipping. During Ramadan we already skip lunch, I manage to skip dinner too by just eating at Iftar. I’m not a fan of social gatherings/Iftar parties during Ramadan either and I try to avoid it. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftar? Shahzoor: Indian, Indian Chinese & Arabic cuisine

22 MAY, 2020 TULIP

What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Hoor: The spiritual discipline in the initial days of Ramadan increases the connection with Allah and every night I renew my intentions of performing different acts of worship leading to greater rewards.

What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Shahzoor: Ramadan is the prime time for a change in Muslims; internal change in prioritising Islam over the worldly distractions and dedication to worship Allah has been the most positive transformation in me. What do you plan on wearing this Ramadan since the option of buying a new outfit seems to be closed? Ruqaiyyah: Eid isn’t about wearing new outfits, rather wearing an outfit which is immaculate to celebrate the end of Ramadan. That being said, thankfully I do have a new spare outfit which I may or may not wear this year. To all those readers - It’s alright to not have a new fashionable outfit as it does not defeat the purpose of Eid-ul-Fitr.

SPECIAL |

Dahi Wadas With The Shaiks What is your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Rubeena: Ramadan is the month of blessings. During this month we ask Allah for forgiveness and our sins are expiated. The essence of Ramadan is in worship. In this holy month, all the bad is contained and the good is multiplied.

How is this year’s Ramadan in quarantine going to be different from that of every year? Salman: This Ramadan is very special because we are getting to spend more quality time with our family. Quarantine has brought the entire family together, all-male members are embracing their inner chefs. What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life and diet? Samya: Screen time definitely goes down. This time around socialising also has come to a halt which would otherwise be bustling with iftar and suhoor gatherings. How much ever we try of course one cannot resist samosas and haleem. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftar? Wardah: We love both Indian and Mediterranean cuisine, also we love experimenting with different cuisines adding an Indian touch.

What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Rubeena: Mid Ramadan slump is a myth. As days keep on passing the excitement also grows as we look forward to Eid and its preparations. So shopping and gatherings are all that keeps us motivated. But due to the lockdown, the social gatherings will be less this time. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Salman: This Ramadan is proving to be a turning point in our lives. Even amidst this pandemic crisis like lock down, fall of the economy, loss of lives, Ramadan is a silver lining which is giving us hope and making us realise things we previously took for granted. What do you plan on wearing this Ramadan since the option of buying a new outfit seems to be closed? Samya: For the celebration of Eid, new clothes are not mandatory. It’s about putting on the best outfit you own, the only pre-requisite being cleanliness.

Iftaar With The Beg Family

What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Shakila: Ramadan for me is a period of the cleansing of not just the body, but also of the soul by abstaining, not just from food and drink, but from negative moods and thoughts whilst inculcating a spirit of generosity (zakat) and empathy. How is this year of Ramadan in quarantine going to be different from that of every year? Amer: My daughter, Sehr, turned 7 on the 16th of March and to celebrate it my brother Samir Beg, his wife Tej Bhabi and his boys Zahan and Mikhail came to Hyderabad. As a blessing in disguise they got stranded here and couldn’t go back to Pune, so it’s been extra special this year for them to be around and the family to be together for the entire month of Ramadan and not just the Eid.

What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life and diet? Amer: I try and spend time reading the Quran and improving my knowledge of Islam as opposed to watching tv or being on my phone too much. Socially, I’m anyway difficult to get a hold off so that stays the same. When it comes to my diet, it’s quite a challenge because I normally eat every hour and in Ramadan, it gets put on hold but I don’t overeat when it’s time for iftar. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftar? Samir: At the Beg household it’s a traditional Hyderabadi iftaar. My mother makes the most scrumptious food (and I promise I’m not 24 MAY, 2020 TULIP

being biased). There’s channa daal with lemon, dahi wade, seasonal fruits (loads of mango this season), banana or guava chaat salad, Haleem along with fresh juices.

What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Tejuswini: I enjoy and cherish the traditions that come along with Ramadan so I don’t necessarily hit a slump. I look forward to this month and love the Sehri’s and the Iftaar’s and the family sitting together. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Shakila: Every Ramadan brings about personal development and reform to be a better human where one can introspect and do away with bad habits, bad practices and learn to be kind to others, be generous, be patient and tolerant for one another so the positive change has been constant every Ramadan. What do you plan on wearing this Ramadan since the option of buying a new outfit seems to be closed? Amer: It is a tradition for one to wear new clothes for Eid but if that isn’t available then we can wear our best clothes available to us. Thankfully I have a new Kurta and Pyjama that I had got stitched for a wedding but because of the quarantine I couldn’t attend, so I’ll be wearing that.

SPECIAL |

Biryani With The Khaleels What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Zara: My Definition of purpose of Ramadan means a good opportunity to change yourself by having built the patience in you. And by doing loads of good deeds & charity which Benefits Others.” The word RAMADAN means Burning” It was named Ramadan because it burns the sins of the people with good deeds. How is this year of Ramadan in quarantine going to be different from that of every year? Wajid: This year of Ramadan in quarantine would definitely be the opposite & totally different from every year of Ramadan in past. All these years it was during the time of Ramadan I use to visit the mosque more frequently to offer prayers. And to offer Tarawih prayers during the night time & spend more time in the mosque. There used to be a lot of iftar parties, hanging out with friends & playing cricket till the time of seheri & going to the old city occasionally to enjoy the real atmosphere of Ramadan with stalls of haleem all over & everyone enjoying the delicious haleem but this year of Ramadan in quarantine all these things would be missed a lot. But I’m excited to have all the Iftars at home with family. What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life and diet? Zara: When the Holy month of Ramadan comes it’s natural that daily Routine of life changes completely for a month. I usually avoid watching movies & listening to music. I rather listen to or watch things which bring you knowledge. And hear lots of duas & surahs on youtube and which I get forwards on WhatsApp. Socially I don’t go for any birthday parties or weddings or any social party too. I just prefer going to iftar party as it gets over early too, and I can carry on with my tarawih prayers. During the month of Ramadan, I prefer eating twice a day sehri & iftar. Anything that I have post iftar till sehri is very light basically milk shakes & light munches. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftar? Wajid: There are lots of variety made for iftar in my house because everyone has their own likes & cravings for iftar. As I prefer eating haleem & deep fried samosa, chicken spring rolls, bhajiyae , dahi vadae occasionally which are made every day for iftar. I make sure my favourite cuisine is made for me every day for iftar like fresh pineapple & watermelon juice, grilled shredded chicken sandwich or egg sandwich. I prefer having grilled chicken with corn too. What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Zara: I feel it’s the will power which comes from within to be motivated & consistent as the month of Ramadan starts. For the first few days, it’s the transformation of mind, body & soul. But especially when the mid-Ramadan comes it becomes quite easy to fast as it becomes a habit which I had adapted. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Wajid: Every Year of holy Ramadan since I had grown up I had lots of changes in me. Especially I feel in this month of Ramadan it brings inner peace Allah open doors for opportunity, forgiveness, acceptance of prayers & duas. A few years back in the month of Ramadan I learnt to forgive & seek forgiveness and not keeping anything for anyone in my heart. And it made a big difference in my life. I value more about my loved ones especially my mother, wife, kids & my family. What do you plan on wearing this Ramadan since the option of buying a new outfit seems to be closed? Wajid: Luckily I have a few pairs of new kurta pajamas that were stitched, bought by my mom & wife last Ramadan for Eid. Which I didn’t get the opportunity to wear as I had already my clothes stitched for Last Eid. So this Ramadan is the perfect time to utilise those clothes for Friday’s, special nights & Eid.

Fruit Chat With The Khans

What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Anjum: For me, the definition of the purpose of Ramadan is to come closer to the creator of the world, to worship him and to seek forgiveness. It is also to master yourself by controlling your mind, heart and stomach. How is this year of Ramadan in quarantine going to be different from that of every year? Moin: This Ramadan will indeed be a prime chance to self-reflect and celebrate loved ones and friendships. This year will evidently require some extra effort instead of going to fancy restaurants for a pricey iftaar meal; everyone can create their own feast. What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life and diet? Sakina: In terms of technology usage now that everyone’s at home and have a lot of time in their hands me and my family have decided to utilise this time to watch Ramadan lectures and community prayers on YouTube. Talking about social life we used to have a lot of iftaar parties for our friends and family at home. All of that will be taken over by virtual iftar gatherings now. Coming to the diet plan, some of you may be thinking Ramadan is the great time to lose weight but this is the time where one actually gains weight. That’s because eating large meals super early in the morning and late at night with a long period of low activity bordering on lethargy in between can wreak havoc on your metabolism. I being a foodie can never have a diet plan during Ramadan. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftar? Anjum: Every day is a feast at our home for iftar. And in this quarantine, I and my mum have decided to make every day something new so that we don’t miss out on anything. Some of my favourites are from haleem to dahi vade, from shami kebabs to sheer kurma, from dum biryani to fresh fruit juices, from meat curries to shahi tukda, all of these forms are a part of our iftar. What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Sakina: Ramadan is the month of the Quran. The recitation of the Quran privately, and the recitation of the Quran in the Taraweeh prayer itself is a motivator for me in this month. Also to make the month feel extra special I like to decorate my room. If you have fairy lights or candles try arranging those around your room. If you don’t have any decorations, you can make some by writing your favourite quotes and sticking them up. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has

26 MAY, 2020 TULIP

brought to your life? Moin: From tight sleep schedules to hunger for extended hours to a reduction in consumption of junk foods, to a technology diet; to withdrawal from caffeine addiction, to lengthy standing in Taraweeh prayers at night, to extensive listening to the Quran. Every Ramadan I become more positive and a better version of myself and I thank Allah for this blessed month. What do you plan on wearing this Ramadan since the option of buying a new outfit seems to be closed? Sakina: Coming to outfits I have always been very particular to what I will be wearing on Eid. This year I just got lucky that I had 2 new outfits ready that I planned to wear in any occasion that comes up but now that all the events have been cancelled I have got a chance to wear one of the outfits for Eid. In this case, I still have a new outfit so there is nothing to worry about it.

SPECIAL |

Suhoor With The Hussains What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Rubina: Ramadan is the month of mercy, compassion and forgiveness. The purpose of Ramadan is to come closer to the creator of the world, to worship him and to seek forgiveness. Muslims around the world observe fasting for this entire month and it’s not just about staying hungry all day but also abstaining from any wrong doing to the best of our knowledge. Also as the popular belief goes it takes 21 days to create a habit! So it gives all of us a chance to implement the good and let go of anything bad we think we have bought upon ourselves! How is this year of Ramadan in quarantine going to be different from that of every year? Adnan: One thing which I will miss the most this Ramadan is our Taraweeh in the mosque. It’s our Ramadan routine to go for night

prayers every year as a family. We wait for this holy month of Ramadan to come so we can all go to the mosque and during Taraweeh prayers, listen to the Imam and understand the deeper meaning of the Holy Quran. And of course like every Hyderabadi irrespective of his or her faith, we are going to miss haleem, all the midnight hangouts and sehri treats which our city offers every year. What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life and diet? Rubina: In terms of technology, at home, we try collectively to reduce tv time as a family. We try to devote as much time to reading the Quran and prayers during the duration of the fast. Early evenings are consumed with the preparation of iftar at home. Every year we had some need to change our lifestyle in terms of social commitments to fulfil our obligations of the soul and faith in Ramadan. But this year staying home is giving us much more time to think and reflect and feed our soul. In terms of diet, I personally have to actively watch myself because I have the tendency to fill any voids in life with food, quarantine was the time I went into a food coma. I tried every new recipe I came across and you tube cookery channels were my saviours. But during Ramadan eating healthy and filling especially in the time of sehri will help you sustain the month-long fasts. I personally include bananas and complex carbs in sehri coz they help me stay full for longer. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftaar? Rubina: I and my husband both are big foodies, so iftar time is very dear to us. It mainly includes traditional Hyderabadi dishes like dahi vade, fried items like samosas, bhajiyas and spring rolls, fruit juice and fruit chaat. I am a Gujarati so sometimes I crave for my dhoklas. So every few days there is some change in cuisine and we have gujju treat with some chaat for iftar. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Adnan: Every year Ramadan makes me grounded. It’s a month of sharing and giving whatever you can, be it money, food, knowledge or love. Going without good all day teaches you a lot of things. You do realize the plight of the poor and that motivates us to share what we have and try to do that in abundance. Also, a good positive change which Ramadan instils in me is discipline and self-control. I try to not sleep after Fajr prayers and start my day early. The calmness of early mornings gives a boost to my productivity. What do you plan on wearing this Ramadan since the option of buying a new outfit seems to be closed? Rubina: I actually didn’t think about this until I read this question. I think the lock down has taught us all to live in a minimalistic way. We have all come this far and managed to live without a lot of things which we once considered as a necessity. So yes, Eid this year will be more in essence than ever, we will dress up in neat clothes if not new and then sheer khurma can fill any voids if at all we feel the blues which is unlikely, we all pray we will have a beautiful Ramadan and an amazing Eid and all our worries and viruses soon may come to an end.

How to cope with Mental Health during Isolation According to the World Health Organization, the novel coronavirus as Sars-Cov-2 and the disease it causes as COVID-19 -19 when expanded The CO expands to corona, the VI for virus and the D for the disease. During periods of a pandemic, it is highly important to concentrate on not just physical well-being but also to make sure that the emotional safety and well-being of individuals that are affected by the epidemic are taken into consideration and made aware of it. The rise of the COVID-19 has led to a number of precautionary measures such as quarantines, social distancing and in some cases total lockdown in regions or countries around the world. Loneliness and social alienation can have a serious effect on the mental health of many in various socio-economic classes. Anxiety, apathy, and boredom are some mental health consequences of isolation and can be observed to exist long after the pandemic stops, whereas heightened feelings of distress and tension can have a serious effect on mental health particularly in this period of instability. We interviewed two psychotherapists/ psychologists who are inclusive and intersectional therapists who believe in contextualising mental health to get a better understanding of isolation and mental health.

Excerpts From A Conversation With Sumaya Baba Could the COVID19 be a looming psychological impact? The unprecedented extent of the pandemic will have consequences which the world will have to recover from over time, whether it is the economic and financial disruption or psychological impact on humankind. Our mental health is influenced by the environment we are in and in the case of COVID19 until the vaccination is developed, the fear of contracting the virus may be anxiety provoking. There is bound to be chaos in our psyche when we can no longer take the safety of our surroundings for granted. For example, even a flu may cause much more stress than usual. Likewise, living away from your parents or children may leave you in a constant state of worry for their safety. Therefore, our psychological resources may be spent recovering from the consequences of a pandemic while simultaneously adapting to the ‘new normal’ in a post COVID19 world. However, while it is important to be prepared for the unfamiliar chaos and uncertainty, it is equally important to believe in one’s capacity to survive this. In the face of social isolation, our effort towards emotional and virtual connection with loved ones may have to increase. Resilience is strengthened when we function as a collective. What impact can long periods of Isolation have on individuals? Isolation when it is not by choice, but a compulsion can prove challenging for many of us. Counterintuitively, prolonged isolation may be more exhausting than going out as it leaves very few activities to occupy our mind. Boredom is an underrated psychological state which in reality can be stressful. Our motivation to work or follow our routine may gradually diminish by staying at home over time and in turn lead us to feeling guilty. Unlike normal circumstances, the period of isolation can open new channels of self knowledge since we spend so 32 MAY, 2020 TULIP

much time being with oneself. For some these realizations may cause discomfort. It is important to identify moments where we dwell too intensely in our negative thought train and immediately break out of it to protect our psychologicalwell being. So many of us are unfamiliar with the idea of being ‘idle’ and alone with oneself that makes us restless and anxious. Moreover, being away from our partners or family members may create a feeling of detachment and loneliness. These feelings are not unwarranted and we should reach out to our loved ones to communicate our emotional state so they can reassure us with comforting words and affection. Remember, in this context, isolation is to protect yourself from the virus and not a reflection of your life in general. It is only temporary and we’re all in this together. What is the best way to cope with these long periods of isolation? l The first most important thing to do is to check in with yourself time and again and remain attuned to your mood states. Self empathy during isolation is crucial for our wellbeing. Be kind to yourself. Appreciate every little thing you’re doing during this pandemic. l Create a routine- Although everyone emphasizes the importance of maintaining a routine, no one actually explains what it really is. Routine is only a division and allocation of time to basic activities during a day which you repeat on most days of the week. Don’t perceive it as an arduous task because that’ll only hinder your attempt to being organized. Before you begin, clarify what a routine is not for you. If you’re facing difficulty sticking to doing basics during a day like meal timings or office work, then focus only on them. If you find yourself being comfortable then go ahead and add something fun to the routine like an online dance class. Routine is the tool to keep you organized, not a way to sharpen your talents. l Productivity- It is a way to cope with a pandemic, not the sole purpose of it. Don’t pressurize yourself to be as productive as you were before COVID19, acknowledge the drastic change we are all undergoing and adjust accordingly both physically and mentally. Work is important, but right now, your priority should be good health and safety of you and your loved ones. If you find yourself feeling low because of unproductive days, remind yourself- your level of productivity during a global crisis does not define you in any which way. l Maintain safe spaces- Broadly, safe spaces are of three typesphysical, psychological and virtual. A safe place is where you can be at ease and let your walls down knowing you won’t be judged or criticized. If you find your family environment being hostile to you during the lockdown, it is important you create a small corner in your room for yourself. If that’s not possible, turn inward and activate the reassuring voice within you, which you would normally use to comfort another friend. It’s time you used it for yourself. Finally, virtual safe spaces include staying connected with friends and even strangers on social media who bring positivity in your everyday life. While a skype call may not fill the void of physical presence, it is definitely better than feeling alone. What is the best way to cope with social isolation when someone already has an existing mental health condition? The experience of a pandemic and our approach towards it is determined by our existing psychological health to a large extent. It can be difficult for persons with previous experiences of mental health problems to adjust to social isolation, as our past traumas and dysfunctional coping mechanisms get activated in times of a crisis. However, the following points can make it an easier experience for you: l If you’ve not consulted a psychologist or aren’t in psychotherapy, this is a good time to reach out to someone. A psychotherapist’s presence means you wont have to face this crisis on your own. l Keep the voice of reality alive within you. Irrespective of the kind of

psychological problem you have experienced, knowing you have it in you to overcome the anxiety, sadness or other symptoms goes a long way. Ensure you are not consuming too much news or information in a day as it will aggravate the negative state of mind. Know the difference between being informed and being overly involved. Identify the triggers to your mood states or behaviors which cause difficulty to you or your loved ones and immediately withdraw into your safe space. Put it extra effort to maintain the routine and practices given to you by the psychologist before this pandemic. The coping mechanisms for dealing with anxiety provoked during a pandemic as opposed to under normal circumstances don’t differ.

What is the best way for parents to talk to their children about COVID-19 and its impact? It’s important for parents to acknowledge their children’s capacity to sense the changes in their environment and troubles experienced by family members. Children are more aware and emotionally receptive than we give them credit for. Therefore, parents must make an honest attempt to communicate to their little ones about the situation while avoiding details which may be incomprehensible to a child. Some of the statements parents can use to converse with their children include “I know you notice we’re all at home more often and constantly ask you to wash your hands but theres a reason for it…” , “I understand you want to go out and play with your friends but it is not possible this moment since..”, “We’re all in this together and as long as we stay home we’ll be able to fight the virus better as a family” . Be present to your child and communicate with them in a way they understand and not as adults only. Children have a language of their own which parents must adapt to and not vice versa. You could use the method of play to indicate the importance of staying inside by using familiar toys. Understand your child’s emotional state before expecting them to obey your instructions during the pandemic. What are the best strategies to cope with social distancing, selfisolation or quarantine when taking care of children and older individual’s? Children : The four C’s are very important while understanding your child. 1. Comprehend- Children have their own thought processes and psychic structures which are important to access. 2. Communicate- They may not use the kind of language adults are used to but it doesn’t mean they don’t feel the need to communicate or be communicated to. Develop a common language between you and your child, like simplifying the words and even using fantasy scenarios to explain to them certain situations. 3. Comfort- Children have a capacity to feel and empathize with their immediate environment. Acknowledge this and provide a supportive space for them to express their emotions as well. 4. Collaborate- Since the entire family is home, the burden may fall on one member to handle everyone and everything. This can be avoided if children are made to feel responsible by assigning tasks to them. It can range from household chores to play ideas for the entire family to engage in. Let everyone feel like they’re contributing to avoid chaos and feeling of boredom. Elderly: Their physical safety is of utmost priority. Make sure to make them feel safe and comfortable in their space and restrict the COVID19 conversation with them as it might feel personally threatening. If there is space at home for physical exercise then this would not only relieve stress and keep them active but also provide psychological reassurance that they’re ‘doing’ their bit to remain safe and healthy. It is important to feel in control even when you’re not.

Excerpts From A Conversation With Rafath Unissa Could the COVID19 be a looming psychological impact? Yes, covid19 being a pandemic, has hit us all out of the blue and it has made us all realize how vulnerable we all are as humans. A lot of uncertainty has entered our lives and life as we knew it has come to a stand still. It does have a huge impact on our mental health in many ways, there is a lot of anxiety concerning our health and that of our loved ones, our financial and economic situation is badly affected, we are quarantined in our homes and some us are even stuck in abusive or toxic environments at home, we might even feel lonely, anxious, irritated or even depressed due to isolation and social distancing. And it is going to take some time for things to get back to normal even after the lockdown ends, and this period is going to have a looming psychological impact on all of us, getting back to the pre-lockdown way of life is not going to be easy. A lot of our plans have to be re-evaluated as there is so much uncertainty about our future. The way we go about our lives will be altered in many ways. So yes, covid-19 is going to leave it’s mark. What is the best way to control mental pressure when someone feels anxious or stressed when thinking of COVID-19? Feeling anxious or stressed during this unprecedented period of global uncertainty is completely normal. We might also feel helpless, sad, frustrated, irritated and feel that things are not in our control. In such a situation, some of the ways in which we can manage our anxieties and fears is by being mindful of our information consumption and limiting our exposure to anxiety-provoking news or updates on the pandemic. Another thing that we need to ask ourselves is ‘is this in my control?’ Focusing on what is in our control and what isn’t helps us deal with the anxious thoughts about our future and stay in the present moment. And finally, having a routine and giving structure to your day might be really helpful in giving you a sense of control and defusing the anxious, overwhelming feelings of helplessness. What is the best way for parents to talk to their children about COVID-19 and its impact? Children might find it difficult to understand what they are seeing online, on TV, or hearing from other people, so they can be particularly vulnerable to feelings or anxiety, stress and sadness. Parents and caregivers need to connect emotionally with children, understand their concerns, be aware of any situation leading to stress, and also try to create an environment which is as normalised as it can possibly be. Some of the ways in which parents can engage with their children are by giving them opportunities to talk about what they are feeling and encouraging them to share concerns and ask questions. Children need adults to help them understand what is going on, so parents need to talk about what is happening by keeping it simple and appropriate for each child’s age. Silence and secrets do not protect our children, honesty and openness does. Communicating in fun and supportive ways rather than ignoring their questions and concerns is beneficial. In such a time, children also need to feel comforted and reassured that they are safe and taken care of, so spending time with them, educating them about hygiene and safe distance in a fun way,

playing interactive and learning-related games are some ways that can be helpful. How can one support a loved one who is very anxious about the COVID-19 pandemic? Being there for them, this does not mean that you give solutions or suggestions or ask them to stop feeling anxious, it simply means that you are being present to their experience by validating and empathising with them. Listen to them and their experience and ask how you can be of help. Professional help and therapy is also available across various online platforms to help people manage anxiety and stress during this uncertain time. What is the best way to deal with feeling lonely while in selfisolation? With the current lockdown and social distancing, a lot of us are stranded in our homes away from our friends and social circles and some of us are even away from our families. This makes the feelings of loneliness creep in, some ways of dealing with this is by keeping ourselves busy with activities that are engaging and attention absorbing, like taking up a long-forgotten hobby, reading that book you always wanted to, taking up an online course, etc. Another way would be using technology to stay connected with people, playing online games with a group of friends or organising online meetups. We can also use this alone-time to reflect and look within, spend time with ourselves and engage in contemplative and meditative practices of self-discovery. What are the best strategies to cope with social distancing, self-isolation or quarantine? With the lockdown and social distancing in place, a lot of us are feeling irritated, frustrated, bored, depressed and a variety of complex feelings. The lack of physical activity, socialising, doing the same household chores everyday and balancing it work from home does have an impact on our mental wellbeing. Studies show that low activity and social disconnection are two of the most important factors responsible for maintaining low mood, motivation and energy. Some of the ways in which we can cope with this is by having a daily routine and regular sleep schedules, having an exercise routine, staying connected with our loved ones, spending fun time with family by playing board games or organising movie nights, practicing mindfulness and finally being kind and compassionate towards ourselves and reminding ourselves that we are doing the best we can in a time of global crisis. This also means that we aren’t being too hard on ourselves for not being productive. It’s okay to feel demotivated sometimes and it’s okay to not be productive, it’s okay if we don’t finish all the tasks for the day and it’s okay to binge watch that show on Netflix. Also practicing gratitude for all that we have opens us up to joy, compassion and appreciation of the present. This lockdown and social distancing has given us an opportunity to pause and reflect on our lives, let’s take this opportunity to slow down and connect with what is important for us, with self-compassion and kindness.

Who let the sun out? Make way for the sun! Beauty hacks for knocking over the heat

The sun’s out and so are our sunscreens, hats and scarves to stay protected from its rays. Summers bring along the fear of getting tanned, building up of all that melanin and of course the dreaded sunburns. Our makeup too, hardly survives the charring heat of Hyderabad during summers and all we crave is to stay indoors with the air conditioners swaying it’s cold breeze over us. We might not be able to stop the rays from reaching you, but what we can do is save you from them affecting your healthy supple skin and makeup products. Here we’ve brought to you the best beauty hacks for this summer from the top makeup artists of our city, helping you solve all your worries of the heat. Thank us later!

Fakhia Arif

Instagram: fakhiarif Question: How to keep your skin moist and hydrated in summers? “To keep your skin moist & hydrated the following things should be considered: 1. Spf 30! Sun block is a must in the summer heat & anything with spf 30 blocks 97% of the UVB rays. 2. Kielhs ultra facial cream. No matter how oily you get, never skip your moisturizer. 3. MAC cosmetics Fix+ or Dickinson’s hydrating facial mist.”

Saniya Khan

Instagram: makeupbysaniyakhan Question: How to make your makeup last longer? “Prepping your skin before makeup application is the most essential step to make it last longer! Start off by using a toner to help get rid of excess oils and balance the pH in the skin. Use a water based moisturizer to hydrate with and an oil-free pore minimizing primer! This gives the skin a smooth finish and helps makeup stay put. Use an oil-free foundation and then cream based products on the face and set them with a matching powder. Instead of buffing in the powders in circular motion, stipple them onto the face to lock the products in place. Use LOADS of setting spray! Lastly, always carry a compact to dab on areas that appear shiny”. TULIP - MAY, 2020 35

Sandy

Instagram: sandysartistry Question: How to avoid getting tanned? “Skin care routine is necessary to avoid getting tanned. One should only apply sunscreen post the skin regiment- Cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. There are also many BB & CC creams and even foundations which have SPF added in their composition and can be used for dual benefit without the hassle of applying two different products”.

Aliya Al Mahmoud

Instagram: makeupbyaliyaalmahmoud Question- DIY facemasks for surviving summers “A face pack made with gram flour, curd, tomato juice and turmeric gives an instant glow for people with oily skin. For those with a dry skin type, a tablespoon of raw milk mixed with gram flour and a teaspoon of ghee can be applied at night for 15 mins before washing it off with lukewarm water. This decelerates the appearance of wrinkles and at the same time hydrates and gives the dry skin it’s much needed glow and moisture during summers.” 36 MAY, 2020 TULIP

Nadia Khatoon

Instagram: bridesbynadia Question: How to treat tan lines and sunburns? Answer: “A shower scrub requires you to slough off the top layer of your skin to start the fading process! (If your skin is burned, please wait a few days or it won’t be pleasant). Lemon is a natural exfoliant, which is also gentle as it does not require any harsh scrubbing! You need to dilute the lemon juice in honey so it doesn’t burn. Leave this on for 25 mins and rinse. Potato slices work like magic too. If you have a red burn line rather than a tan line, then you can cut a potato into thin slices and place it on the affected areas! Let sit for 15 mins and then remove!”

Aliya

Instagram: makeoversbyaliya Question: The perfect makeup for summers? “Keeping your makeup light is the key. Use a concealer instead of foundation, choose cheek stain over powdered blush, wear lip stains instead of thick, creamy lipsticks, use bronzer for a sun-kissed look and opt for matte products over shimmers. Keep blotting papers handy to use them instead of more powder.”

Scrumptious Ramzan Delicacies Ramadan is here, it’s a period of self-reflection and teaches to practice self-control but as the sunsets and it’s time to break our fasts we look for something delicious on our Iftar table we here at Tulip are always up for delicious scrumptious food and therefore have gathered amazing recipes that are not only delicious but also easy to make. Recipes by Samiha Khan @Obsessive.food.disorder Chicken Tikka Ingredients (1 CUP = 240ML ) 500 grams of CHICKEN boneless & cubed 1½ tablespoon gram flour or besan ½ cup CURD OR YOGURT or greek yoghurt ½ green bell pepper ½ red bell pepper or tomatoes (deseeded) 1 large onion cubed Salt as needed 1 tablespoon oil preferably mustard oil 1 to 2 tablespoon lemon juice (or as needed) 1 tablespoon GINGER GARLIC PASTE or grated Spice powders ¾ to 1 teaspoon red chilli powder or paprika 1/8 teaspoon pepper powder 1/8 teaspoon turmeric ½ tablespoon Kasuri methi or dried fenugreek leaves (optional) ¾ to 1 teaspoon GARAM MASALA ½ teaspoon coriander powder Method Preparation for chicken tikka This recipe needs thick curd or greek yoghurt. If using homemade yoghurt then follow the notes & strain the whey to get thick yoghurt. Add it to a mixing bowl along with red chilli powder, pepper powder, turmeric, Kasuri methi, garam masala & coriander powder. Next add lemon juice, salt & oil. Mix everything well and taste it. Add more chilli powder, salt or lemon if needed to adjust the taste. Add the cubed chicken to the marinade. Marinate the chicken for at least an hour to 12 hours. Longer the chicken rests more flavorful & succulent it will turn out. You will have to refrigerate if marinating for longer than an hour. How to make chicken tikka Prepare a baking tray with a foil-lined over it. Then place a rack over it. Cube the veggies and add it to the marinade. Smear the marinade over it. Put them on to skewers, alternating veggies and chicken. Place these over the prepared tray. Preheat the oven to 240 C for at least 15 minutes. Grill chicken tikka for 20 to 30 mins or till fully done. I suggest checking after 20 mins. This depends on the size of your chicken pieces and how tender it is. The last 3 to 4 mins, move the chicken to the top rack. Serve chicken tikka with some veggies as an appetizer.

Breton Stripes A Breton striped T-shirt has long been a summer staple. The nautical-inspired blue and white design looks perfect when paired with jeans or denim shorts and is eyecatching without being overwhelming. The classic Breton striped T-shirts have made a comeback as an urban trend. Whether you wear it with a skirt or with jeans, these casual stripes add a touch of sophistication to any outfit. The key thing to keep in mind when wearing stripes is that the rest of your outfit should complement it rather than make overpower it. It’s a classic piece, so you want to team it with a pair of classic jeans or trousers. Just because the T-shirt has some colour on it doesn’t mean you can’t still add more into your look.

T-Shirt Dress Pieces that are casual, comfortable and versatile make for some of the best wardrobe items. One such item is the T-shirt dress, and it is a must-have for summer. All you need to do is find the right one for you, whether it’s plain, striped, sequined or oversized. To style a t-shirt dress, try wearing a long-sleeved shirt underneath for a casual but fashionable look. Alternatively, wear a denim jacket, utility jacket, or long line cardigan over the top during cooler weather. You can also pair a t-shirt dress with tights or leggings to keep your legs warm. Wrap a flannel shirt around your waist for a relaxed fall outfit. Choose a solidcolour T-shirt dress for this look. Pick a bright flannel shirt that stands out against the T-shirt dress. If the temperature drops, you can easily pull the flannel shirt on. Avoid pairing a striped T-shirt dress with a flannel shirt, as the contrasting patterns may look overwhelming.

One-Piece If you’re creating the perfect summer capsule wardrobe, you can’t forget about swimwear. A classic one-piece is an ideal item to own and is an essential addition to your closet. As well as being timelessly stylish, a one-piece is also versatile and can double as a top or undergarment when required. A white linen button-down is a beach-day essential. Pair it with a one-piece or bikini for an added layer and simply tie it up at the waist. Add shorts or a skirt for a full outfit. Put your collection of vintage scarves to good use and wear them as bikini cover-ups. Simply tie one around your strapless bikini top and pair with shorts or a skirt. One piece bathing suits are flattering for every body type. They come in a variety of styles, colours, and silhouettes. You can easily style a one piece for a trip to the beach or as part of your day-to-day style in place of a bodysuit. Choose your bathing suit based on the look you are going for, and pair it with shorts, skirts, and dresses or accessories like flip flops, wedges, and necklaces. Make your outfit your own, and you can style any one piece!

Denim Jacket Although you don’t need a lot of outerwear in summer, a denim jacket is essential. Perfect for mornings and evenings, the classic design will keep you feeling warm even when the temperature starts to drop. The denim jacket has long been a wardrobe staple for women. The garment, with its casually stylish appeal, is unbeatable for relaxed outfits, making it a classic piece of fashion. The denim jacket looks set for resurgence in popularity, meaning that it’s time to brush up on the coolest styles and how to wear them. Today, a denim jacket can mean any number of things. It can mean a classic blue design or something a little more modern, such as black or white. It can mean the cropped cuts we’ve loved for years or the new breed of long line styles that have become exceedingly popular. Either way, rocking a denim jacket is no longer as simple as it once was.

The Whites’ The white T-shirt may not be the most exciting piece of clothing, but it is one of the most versatile. The simple summer style can partner with nearly everything and look great. So, whether you’re rocking black pants, a patterned skirt, maxi dress or jeans, you can never go wrong with this staple piece. A white button-up shirt is another versatile summer essential. It can be worn with jeans, shorts, skirts, and under dresses. As well as adding a touch of polish to casual outfits, the style is also perfect for enhancing the appearance of your glowing summer tan. There’s something so refreshing and chic about wearing white in summer. So, instead of rocking your usual black pants this sunny season opt for white instead. Whether you like your pants straight, flared, wide-leg, cropped or made of denim, white can make a seriously stylish choice.

Boyfriend Jeans While skinny jeans are undoubtedly a winter essential, boyfriend jeans are a summer staple. Casual, comfy, and oh-so-cool, these relaxed pants project the perfect vibe for the sunny season. Just remember to opt for summery shades of blue instead of dark, wintery black. Boyfriend jeans may have started as a trend, but today the boyfriend is a staple jean in many women’s wardrobes. Boyfriend jeans can be baggy or slim, cuffed or not. This jean style is typically fitted at the hips, with a more relaxed fit through the legs. Take a pair of cropped boyfriend jeans with rolled cuffs, layer on a crisp white shirt, and top it all with a colourful bomber jacket. Finish your trendy outfit with a cross body bag and wear it with casual sneakers. Or for a next-level look, mix things up by adding sexy, strappy high heel sandals.

Runway Trends

FASHION |

To Follow

Considering the fact that there are hundreds of runway shows every season, we certainly don’t expect you to go digging through them all to unearth the trends that will rise to the top. That’s what we’re here for. This SS 2020 season (Milan Fashion Week) is one we are excited about, and we know you will be too. Designers gifted us with collections that were the perfect marriage of wearable and innovative. The trends you’ll see highlighted for you below are the ones we saw repeated most frequently throughout the collections. They’re the ones that are the most digestible and the ones we’re predicting will be the heavy hitters all season long. - By Peram Srija Reddy

Something about Suede

It’s common for a particular decade to surface as the major inspiration behind a collection, but when you see designer after designer send out models that look like they just stepped out of an episode of That ‘70s Show, we know something’s up. You can’t participate in the ‘70s trend without at least a little something suede. Or in this case, a lot of suede. Fringe jackets made their triumphant return to the ready-to-wear scene and thanks to brands like Khaite and Celine, the incorporation of this strong outerwear piece finally feels chic as opposed to costume. We also saw stunning suede midi skirts at Altuzarra and more modern takes on the fabric at Long champ with those hot-pants co-ord sets.

“I don’t like the collusion between high fashion design and high street. You have to know where you stand. I belong to luxury fashion. That’s what I’ve always felt and embraced. I like the best quality, the best fabrics and the most creative field in fashion. I will stay consistent. I belong to this world.” - Hedi Slimane, Celine

| FASHION Tied Up

What’s hot, you may be wondering? Well, a lot of things. The (aptly named) overarching theme refers to not only the impending weather but how designers are planning to combat spring and summer’s highly anticipated sizzle with equally alluring wears. While scarf-print pieces and even literal scarves as tops are typically relevant in the warmer months regardless of what’s trending, this spring, designers have taken even more inspiration from the classic accessory, utilizing it in many ways across a variety of RTW pieces. From draped dresses at Altuzarra and Elie Saab to scarf-inspired separates at Burberry and Bottega Veneta, consider beating the heat in one of this season’s many silky, slinky stunners in the coming months. “I’m quite casual. I love tailored clothes; that’s something I love to make, but I feel kind of uncomfortable being too formal. I’m more comfortable in knitwear, jeans, and a T-shirt. Everything we do is done together a heightened aspirational reality, to just make some great clothes, for people to live in and love and enjoy.” – Daniel Lee, Bottega Veneta

Minty Fresh

Now, for the middle ground: mint. Consider it a cousin of the pistachio trend we saw so much of for F/W 19, but just a pinch more spring-ready and easier to style. As seen through Batsheva above, the color pairs well with other pastels, while Gucci styled a pair of mint trousers with a camel blouse for a stunning look. Valentino also paired a mint-colored feathered dress with a hunter green bag and gold accessories. This happy color can be incorporated into your wardrobe through dresses, separates, handbags, or shoes, giving all your outfits a fresh feel.

“It is refreshing for me to see granny-type clothes. For some reason, it seems to me very liberated to dress this way– like you don’t care about being considered “hot” in a mainstream way. Not caring is way cool. My daughter inspires me endlessly. She has an intuitive sense of what she likes, and she is so care-free.” – Batsheva Hay

Into the Gloss

In addition to the satin we saw utilized in the lingerie-inspired pieces back in Beyond the Bedroom, designers also incorporated the high-shine fabric in almost everything else from suits to dresses to separates. So if you want to go corporate with your look, prefer something slinkier, or would rather a happy medium, there’s every option to make the trend your own—and in any colour your heart desires.

“Glamour is something more than what you put on your body. It has to do with the way you carry yourself and the impact you have on others. Perfectionism is almost an illness with me, but sometimes I have moments where everything is clear and you can feel, rather than think.” – Tom Ford

Tropical Getaway

Ready for a getaway? Whether there’s an actual trip on the horizon or you’ll be stuck in the city like the rest of us, thanks to this particular spring and summer trend, you’ll at least be able to dress like you’re headed on the tropical vacation of a lifetime through nature- and fruit-inspired prints. Channel your inner J.Lo with one of Versace’s bold dresses or go more casual by way of a Dolce & Gabbana–style matching set. Either way, feel the island breeze and try not to notice that it’s just air coming from the subway grates. “Fashion takes its inspiration from society and everyday life, which is the same for everyone, and this is perhaps the reason why certain elements recur. Our fashion for us, it’s an expression; first of all of life, I put all of myself in my fashion. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but this is a mirror, an expression about Domenico and Stefano. It’s not just a profession: it’s a person with a lot of personality.” – Stefano Gabbana, Dolce & Gabbana

BOOKS Nineteen Eighty Four (1949)

1984 is a dystopian novella by George Orwell published in 1949, which follows the life of Winston Smith, a low ranking member of ‘the Party’, who is frustrated by the omnipresent eyes of the party, and its ominous ruler Big Brother. ‘Big Brother’ controls every aspect of people’s lives. It has invented the language ‘Newspeak’ in an attempt to completely eliminate political rebellion; created ‘Through crimes’ to stop people even thinking of things considered rebellious. The party controls what people read, speak, say and do with the threat that if they disobey, they will be sent to the dreaded Room 101 as a looming punishment.

Jane Eyre (1847)

Jane finds herself drawn to his troubled yet kind spirit. She falls in love. But there is a terrifying secret inside the gloomy, forbidding Thornfield Hall. Is Rochester hiding from Jane? Will Jane be left heartbroken and exiled once again? It is interesting to read a book written long ago, but with a female protagonist who is far from the submissive woman that was often portrayed in the fiction, and preferred in society, of the time.

To Kill A Mocking Bird (1960)

The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic. Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behaviour - to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humour and pathos. Now with over 18 million copies in print and translated into forty languages, this regional story by a young Alabama woman claims universal appeal. Harper Lee always considered her book to be a simple love story. Today it is regarded as a masterpiece of American literature.
