Adventure & Wellness

When you think of an adventure trip, it may look the opposite of one centered on wellness. Perhaps the former involves a multi-day hike in a remote mountain range, while the latter is a slower-paced journey peppered with yoga classes. But, fundamentally, the two are not that different: The Wellness Tourism Association defines wellness travel, in part, as that which allows the traveler to “support or increase one’s sense of well-being.” And, while a precise definition of adventure travel is more difficult to pin down, G Adventures’ founder Bruce Poon Tip considers it “a mindset of people who want more out of life and more out of their holiday time.” Whether your trip is shaped by physical pursuits, cultural exchange or personal well-being, the most important thing is that you return fulfilled. And in this issue of Range Best, we give you some ideas to kick-start your next wholly enriching journey.

Coral Gardening

If you’re yearning for an adventurous activity where you can leave a tangible, positive imprint on the planet while satiating your thirst for underwater exploration, then coral gardening is for you. It’s an environmental two-step that’s part restoration, part recreation, and it’s stirring up a wave of interest for eco-conscious travelers. Your mission is not just to observe, but to actively participate in rehabilitating our reefs.

WHERE TO GO

Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica, is your launchpad into the world of coral gardening. After an onshore lesson about coral’s crucial role in our planet’s health, you’ll enter turquoise waters to plant your own.

HELP OUT FROM HOME

By adopting a coral through the non-profit organization Coral Gardeners, you’ll contribute to global reef restoration, empowering local communities and nurturing a more sustainable blue economy.

Stand-Up

Paddleboarding Expedition

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has been riding a wave of popularity that shows no sign of cresting. The sport offers the perfect platform for a low-impact workout combined with the thrill of paddling across untamed waters. SUP is now carving a niche in the adventure travel sphere with multi-day expeditions. On inflatable boards loaded with camping gear, explorers are SUP-ing their way through some of the world’s most spectacular waterborne settings. Imagine charting a course through UNESCO-protected fjords in Norway, gliding on mirrored waters encircled by towering cliffs and thundering waterfalls by day and camping out under starlit skies by night.

Some of the world’s first stand-up paddleboarders were fishermen in Peru who made their boards out of reeds 3,000 years ago.

WHERE TO GO

SUP Norway leads six-day all-inclusive SUP adventures in Sognefjord, the longest and deepest navigable fjord in the world. And many cruise ships and tour operators offer optional SUP excursions, including Intrepid, where you can add one on to your Antarctica cruise, scanning glacial landscapes for wildlife as you captain your inflatable SUP.

On a SUP expedition, dry gear is a must. The Sea to Summit Lightweight Dry Bag View is your trusty guard against the elements, ensuring nothing dampens your essentials, or your adventurous spirit.

ADVENTURE LEVEL: ADVANCED

Via Ferrata Adventure

For those who prefer adventures that deliver a serious dose of adrenaline, traversing a Via Ferrata route is the answer. Via Ferrata (Italian for “iron way” or “iron path”) rose to prominence during World War I as a way to move Italian soldiers through the imposing Alps using steel cables and ladders. Today, the sport has reached dizzying heights of popularity with guided Via Ferrata routes springing up in some of the globe’s most epic mountainscapes. 

WHERE TO GO

For the ultimate Via Ferrata experience, head to its heartland in the northern Italian Alps, where, according to local mountain guide Paolo Tassi, “You’ll touch the history of the original routes and feel the sheer beauty of the Dolomites.”

Where to Find Wellness

Whether you want to get pampered, be active or simply unplug, these four destinations deliver every degree of wellness imaginable.

From sunrise yoga classes and seaside massages to introspective spiritual experiences, today’s most coveted vacation pursuits are all about our ongoing quest for “wellness.” A 2022 survey of more than 11,000 people in 16 countries found that two

in five high-income respondents had booked a luxury or wellness retreat in 2023, while one in five Millennials had booked wellness trips exclusively. Not sure where to go to feel your best? Here are four trending destinations that are taking a fresh approach to wellness travel.

8 WELLNESS TOP DESTINATIONS RANGE BEST BY ENSEMBLE
PHOTO: COURTESY OF COMO HOTELS AND RESORTS.

Ibiza

Ibiza, one of Europe’s top party destinations for decades, is now one of the trendiest wellness destinations, enticing many of the same people who visited 20-plus years ago to party but who now just want to be pampered. Ley lines — used to connect sacred sites and believed to carry electromagnetic energy — are purported to intersect the Spanish Balearic island, which is home to a wealth of shamanic yoga retreats, light and sound treatment programs and meditation centres. Celebrity fitness instructors often visit to lead workshops, including Taryn Toomey of The Class studios in L.A. and New York. “The beautiful sea and beaches tucked deep within nature make it a perfect destination to connect with your inner self.”

WHERE TO GO

Luxury travel brand Queen of Clubs offers several wellness experiences in Ibiza, including retreats built around Kundalini yoga and crystal healing sessions, as well as mindfulness classes for children.

Bhutan

The world’s “happiest country” is fast becoming a mecca for those seeking to improve both body and mind. Bhutan is a Buddhist nation where compassion, mindfulness and physical labor are vital aspects of the path to enlightenment. Adventurous travelers are keen to tap into that level of self-improvement, trekking to monasteries perched high in the Himalayan mountains for spiritual experiences and to receive blessings from monks at Kyichu Lhakhang, a temple dating back to the 7th century. A new rash of luxury hotels offering wellness retreats inspired by Buddhist principles has made this incredible destination increasingly more accessible.

WHERE TO GO

Abercrombie & Kent leads luxury tours to Bhutan where guests visit local herbal medicine hospitals, study ancient astrology at monasteries, and indulge in immersive spa rituals, such as the Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath at COMO Uma Punakha or guided meditation with a Lama (a term used for highly respected monks) at Gangtey Lodge.

Dubai

Wellness seekers are increasingly flocking to Dubai to experience over-the-top spa treatments along with the unparalleled levels of luxury that accompany the immense wealth currently flowing through the UAE. From traditional Arabian hammams, secret spa spaces in lush tropical gardens and liquid sound pools to the latest stem-cell facials, Dubai’s wellness retreats combine ancient rituals with stateof-the-art advances in dermatology and the trendiest relaxation techniques.

WHERE TO GO

At Address Sky View, book a Wellness Suite equipped with a Technogym Bike and à la carte Technogym equipment, plus a library of guided workouts you can do in the comfort of your own room. Afterwards, wind down with a top-of-theline spa treatment, such as an Intensive Purifying Facial or personalized full-body massage, at the Spa at Address Sky View, complete with striking views of the futuristic skyline that come with its location on the 54th floor. (A dip in the infinity pool, with Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, as a backdrop, is also a must.)

Peru

Transformation is easy to experience in the breathtaking landscapes and ancient monuments of Peru’s Sacred Valley. Hiking to temple ruins and bathing in natural hot springs connect you with nature, while Indigenous shamans and healers offer guided ceremonies designed to return you to your true self. Despite centuries of Spanish rule, elements of Incan culture remain threaded through Peru’s culture, and traditional remedies — such as coca leaf treatments for altitude sickness — are embraced by a wellness institution that has existed since ancient times.

WHERE TO GO

Join a 12-day wellness experience with South American Tours (S.A.T.) that showcases Peru’s ancient sites while embracing rituals designed to relax and recharge your soul. While exploring the Andes and the majesty of the Amazon, you’ll witness a shamanic ceremony at the 15th-century fortress of Sacsayhuamán on the outskirts of Cusco, learn about traditional herbal medicines and experience sound and music therapy in the Sacred Valley.

How to Feel Your Best While Traveling

It’s so easy for healthy habits and active routines to fall by the wayside as soon as you board a plane — but it doesn’t have to be that way. We went to the experts for tips on how to stay hydrated, get enough exercise and score a good night’s sleep no matter where you’re headed.

What is the latest advice for beating jet lag?

New research from the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre and Australian airline Qantas reveals that your inflight habits can play a big role in alleviating jet lag symptoms upon arrival. Researchers traveled on three 20-hour flights from New York and London to Sydney, monitoring volunteer customers equipped with wearable tech devices as they followed specially designed menu, lighting, sleep and movement routines. Preliminary findings show that passengers had less severe jet lag and performed better cognitively two days after the long-haul flights when the cabin lighting and meal times were tailored to the time zone of their final destination; they consumed food and drink designed to aid sleep (chicken, milk-based desserts and herbal tea) as well as to stay awake (chocolate and caffeine); and they participated in simple stretch and movement activities onboard.

How can you stay hydrated on the go?

Drinking smaller quantities of water every 15 to 20 minutes instead of chugging lots at once is key for staying hydrated, says Khaoula Louati, clinical nurse manager at Summit Health in Toronto and Montreal. This prevents the kidneys from being overloaded and helps your body retain more water. When it’s hot out, adding electrolytes (try dissolvable tablets like Hydralyte or Nuun) to your water can help replenish fluids and minerals lost when you perspire. Finally, carry a selfcleaning UV water bottle, which eliminates up to 99.99 percent of viruses and bacteria in water, to ensure you always have the freshest H2O at hand.

Help — motion sickness is ruining every travel scenario!

You won’t win style points, but French-made Boarding Glasses can be useful in beating motion sickness in any travel setting, whether you’re on the water, on the road or in the air. The four-lens glasses contain a blue liquid that creates an artificial horizon in your field of vision — and they’ve been shown to reduce motion sickness in 94 percent of cases. “These glasses change your perception to make it seem like you’re not imbalanced,” says Louati. Simply pop them on — either on their own, or on top of a prescription pair — when symptoms strike, and you’ll start feeling better in minutes.

What happens if you’re terrible at applying sunscreen — is there an alternative?

Instead of stocking up on SPF 30 and higher lotions, sticks and sprays, which require diligent reapplication, try UPF 30 and above clothing and hats. UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) measures how much ultraviolet radiation a fabric allows to reach your skin, and trumps SPF because it covers both UVB and UVA (SPF only measures UVB). UPF 50+ is the gold standard, blocking 98 percent of the sun’s rays, but UPF 30 to 49 offers very good protection, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. And, of course, continue to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ on your face and any other exposed skin.

What’s the best way to get a good night’s sleep away from home?

Beyond avoiding activities that exert a lot of energy four hours before you go to sleep, as well as any foods or drinks with caffeine eight hours before (best to skip the after-dinner espresso martini), aim to mimic your athome sleep routine as much as possible. That means sticking to your usual bedtime, packing your go-to PJs and using the same skincare products. And, while hotel AC can be finicky, try to control your room temperature: “You want it between 21 and 22 degrees Celsius,” Louati says. “When we go to sleep, our core body temperature increases and, as it goes higher, our sleep is less efficient.” If you’re still having trouble, a white-noise app like BetterSleep can drown out unfamiliar sounds and a travel-size roll-on of lavender essential oil — a proven natural sleep aid — might help you doze off.

How can you stay active when there’s no fitness center in sight?

It’s surprisingly simple: Just get your steps in. (And you don’t need to come close to 10,000.) A new study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that even a small number of daily steps has outsized health benefits. Researchers analyzed 17 studies, looking at how many steps people took over a week, and concluded that walking just under 4,000 per day (that’s about a 30- to 45-minute walk) reduced the risk of mortality from any cause. Pop on your Oura Ring or other wearable tracker and head out to explore your destination on foot.

Mike Horn

How do you deal with challenges in high-stakes situations?

Overcoming challenges requires resilience, adaptability and a strong mindset. When faced with difficulties, I draw strength from my experiences and the knowledge that adversity is an inherent part of exploration. The passion for what I do, combined with a deep sense of purpose, fuels my determination to push forward.

From the Amazon to the Arctic, you’ve seen more of the world than most: What still amazes you about it?

In May, Mike Horn set out on his latest multi-year environmental expedition, What’s Left, aboard his 115-foot icebreaker sailing yacht, Pangaea

The Swiss-South African explorer is also bringing adventure to Explora Journeys passengers as a brand ambassador, developing itineraries, hosting onboard talks and leading hikes in places like Paamiut, Greenland.

Despite having circumnavigated the globe multiple times, the planet never ceases to amaze me: Witnessing the resilience of nature and the interconnectedness of ecosystems is a constant reminder of our responsibility to protect and preserve our environment. The planet is a source of infinite inspiration and reminds us of the incredible wonders that exist beyond our daily lives.

FOUNDER, WILDCHINA

Mei Zhang

Q&A

What’s your favorite adventure destination? My home province of Yunnan is my top recommendation for all types of adventure. It is such a diverse province geographically, botanically and culturally. There are opportunities to forage for mushrooms in the wild, scale snow-capped mountains that look out over Tibet, experience animals like the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey, which is found nowhere else on earth, or trek the ancient Tea Horse Road.

And your top tips for adventuring sustainably?

Mei Zhang founded luxury and adventure travel company WildChina in 2000. When the Harvard Business School alum is not speaking on sustainable adventure tourism or adventuring herself, she is working on her PhD on the feasibility of turning the ancient Tea Horse Road, in the Chinese province of Yunnan, into a hiking trail and national park.

First, interact with locals: Have a chat with a local person, learning more about them and sharing about yourself — this type of cultural exchange is so important to travel and sustainability. Second, respect the place you are in; treat it as if it were your home because it is home to someone else. Don’t only leave no trace but leave it better than you found it. Finally, support the economy by working with local guides, drivers, suppliers and artisans.

ADVENTURE SPECIALIST, ADVENTURE CANADA

Brenya Green

Why should everyone take an adventure trip?

I believe that adventure travel leads to a level of personal growth that can’t be achieved in our day-to-day lives of schedules, routine and responsibility. When you are looking to turn your brain off and relax, book a vacation. When you are looking to understand more of the world, look inward and challenge yourself, book an adventure trip.

What’s the biggest mistake adventure travelers can make?

Brenya Green has worked at family-run Adventure Canada, a small-ship expedition cruise outfit, for six years — in that time, she’s participated in 18 expeditions aboard the 198-passenger iceclass vessel Ocean Endeavour. During operating season, which runs from June to October, Green takes on multiple roles on expeditions, from onboard adventure specialist and program director to Zodiac driver.

The beauty of adventure travel is not knowing what’s around the corner. Going into an adventure with rigid expectations will lead to disappointment because, most likely, things will not go entirely to plan — but sometimes plans B, C or even D are even better. Maybe plan B leads you to an incredible whale sighting, or plan C lets you witness a calving glacier. I promise you, when you let go and go with the flow, you will fully experience the unique power of adventure travel.

FOUNDER, G ADVENTURES

Bruce Poon Tip

How do you define adventure travel?

Adventure is a spirit. It’s having the desire to go off on the road less traveled. It can be active, but it can also be adventurous by destination, because you’re going to remote places. It’s not defined by demographics, but it’s a mindset of people who want more out of life and more out of their holiday time.

What’s your advice on taking adventure trips as a family?

Bruce Poon Tip founded small-group adventure travel company G Adventures, a community tourism trailblazer, in 1990. Since then, he’s launched G Adventures’ non-profit partner, Planeterra Foundation, penned two books and been lauded as an innovative leader who champions social entrepreneurship and is changing the travel industry for the better.

Just do it, because it’s the most enriching education you can offer your children. I started traveling with my kids when they were very young, and we began taking active trips to places like the Galápagos and India when they were five and six years old. As they’ve gotten older, they have a real global view — they’re comfortable being anywhere and fitting in with any community and culture. That’s a gift you can’t get from school.
