Let’s

Family travel is on the rise again, and it’s no wonder: Leaving your comfort zone creates bonding and learning opportunities that just don’t happen at home. In its 2023 survey, the Family Travel Association found that more than 80 percent of parents believe travel brings their family closer — and most say it helps make their children more open to new experiences, improves their outlook on life and helps build social skills, too. The family that goes together, grows together, whether you’re embarking on an ambitious family reunion away (see page 12), a multi-generational trip to Italy or a wildlife-filled adventure in Costa Rica (page 16). Wherever you take off to, you’ll want to bring carry-on-ready items that will simplify your trip — find our list on page 8.

The Traveling Family Reunion

From when and where to who’s coming and what you’ll do, here’s a step-by-step guide to planning a memorable group trip.

When Beverley Arduini sat down to plan her first family reunion, she knew she wanted to bring three generations together. But rather than hosting it at home in Vancouver, she chose Fort Worden — a historic state park in Washington — as the destination. The location meant everyone wouldn’t just sit in a room and reminisce about the past. Instead, they’d create new memories, playing on the beach and biking through the towering evergreen forest.

That was more than 40 years ago — and it was such a success that her family has returned nearly every year since.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re planning a one-off event or hoping to establish a new tradition: Destination family reunions are an unparalleled opportunity for your loved ones to reconnect. If you’ve got your guest list in hand, follow this step-by-step guide to make your destination family reunion one for the scrapbooks.

12 RANGE BEST BY ENSEMBLE FAMILY TRAVEL — PLANNING
13 RANGE BEST BY ENSEMBLE FAMILY TRAVEL — PLANNING
1“To have a travel advisor — an unbiased person — saying, ‘this is the best option’ is very powerful. It will help you offload the bigger decisions.”

Get buy-in and set your budget

It’s fun to fantasize about jetting off to a private Caribbean island or booking out a dude ranch in the High Sierra. But unless there’s just one person or family footing the bill, you’ll need to know how far everyone is willing to go — literally and financially.

Dropping the question in your family WhatsApp chat might seem like the easiest solution, but Seattle-based travel advisor David Hawkraven cautions against this tactic, even if your extended family is tight-knit or small.

“If you’re on a call together or an email thread, you’ll never get the real answers,” says Hawkraven. “The more information you can get individually, the better.”

He recommends starting the planning process at least 12 months in advance by sending out a survey to your guest list. This can help determine the style of trip, budgets and timing, as well as gauge what your family members want to get out of the experience. Working with a travel advisor from the beginning can also help.

“The primary planner is going to have multiple opinions coming at them,” says Hawkraven. This can include everything from your chosen destination to the accommodation you stay in. “To have an advisor — an unbiased person — saying, ‘this is the best option’ is very powerful. It will help you offload some of the bigger decisions that might be contentious.”

14 RANGE BEST BY ENSEMBLE FAMILY TRAVEL — PLANNING

2

Choose your style of accommodation

Accommodation isn’t just about a place to sleep at night. It can also influence the format the reunion takes and what the daily agenda might look like — and vice versa.

“It all comes back to one central question: Do you want to be very close together? Or are you all happy to opt into select activities during the reunion, like a signature meal or two?” says Hawkraven.

All-inclusive resorts and cruise ships are well equipped to deal with family groups, with rooms and activities that cater to a broad age range. But they’re not the only solution. Other options include renting out a large house or villa, booking an exclusive lodge or blocking out rooms in hotels.

3

Create an itinerary

The biggest challenge of a multi-generation trip is just that: You’re planning for a group that likely has a range of needs. In addition to considering accessibility — including for young parents of babies or toddlers, and grandparents with limited mobility — you also need to think about what activities will appeal to different age groups.

This is particularly true if traveling to an ancestral destination. While amateur genealogists might delight in visiting gravesites and archival libraries to see original documents, consider activities that will appeal to a broader range of attendees, like cultural performances, walking tours with a historian, or learning to cook a traditional meal with a local family.

Hawkraven suggests soliciting opinions from the youngest, middle and oldest members of your group, which will allow you to plan activities that everyone can get excited about.

“You can’t please everybody completely, but you can please everyone just a little bit,” says Hawkraven.

Most importantly, remember that your hard work and planning will be worth it.

For Arduini, helping to plan her annual family reunion is a labor of love — but it’s one that pays dividends. “It’s very rewarding to look around the table and see everyone’s smiling faces,” she says. 

Ireland

Ireland’s awe-inspiring beauty isn’t just enchanting for parents — the island’s lush landscapes and windswept beaches are perfect for little ones who need to run, explore and generally let loose. The easy-going culture also makes Ireland a welcoming place to travel with a toddler. “It’s a relaxing, go-with-the-flow destination,” says North Carolina-based travel advisor Lauren Doyle.

01 Pubs like Dublin’s Temple Bar welcome families who need to rest weary legs and refuel.

02 Kids love exploring Ireland’s many beaches, like Kilfarrasy Strand in County Waterford.

03 Climb aboard a jaunting car for a tour of Killarney National Park.

OPENING SPREAD

Go with the flow: There’s a destination to suit every family’s tastes.

What to do

Spot free-roaming deer in Dublin’s sprawling Phoenix Park, then visit the conservationminded Dublin Zoo to see almost 100 other species, including Asian elephants and endangered dholes. Go for a ride in a jaunting car (a.k.a. horse-drawn buggy) amid the picturesque lakes and mountains of Killarney National Park or look for pint-sized dwellings along one of County Kerry’s fairy trails.

Where to eat

There’s no better place to experience Irish daily life than in a local pub. Most are kid-friendly until around 9 p.m. and it’s common to see families in the early evening, enjoying a meal along with the casual ambiance and live music. Crowd-pleasing fare like fish and chips is also sure to satisfy toddlers with finicky palates.

Planning tip

Rent a car to discover Ireland’s charming countryside and towns at your own pace — quiet drives on country roads come with naptime included.

WITH TEENS

Hawai‘i

The jaw-dropping natural beauty and warm “aloha” spirit of Hawai‘i are enough to win over even the toughest-toplease teens. “Teenagers can’t deny the beauty of it,” says Doyle. “It’s a great backdrop for their social media videos and photos.”

What to do

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawai‘i will mesmerize the whole family with its otherworldly landscapes and lava fields, as will the dark volcanic sands of Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach. O‘ahu’s famed Waikīkī Beach is a tried-and-true spot for surfing lessons (or watching pros ride the waves), while an ATV tour is an exhilarating way to explore Kaua‘i’s verdant jungle.

Where to eat

Few Hawai‘i experiences are more immersive than a lū‘au, which offers a chance to sample local dishes like poi — mashed taro root — and kālua pig while learning about Hawai‘i’s history and legends. Try the fun, familyfriendly lū‘au at the Polynesian Cultural Center on O‘ahu.

Planning tip

If you’re staying for two weeks or more, make time to visit at least two of Hawai‘i’s eight major islands, whether you prefer a lesser-traveled destination like Moloka‘i or you want the action of O‘ahu.

Italy

Leave it to a beloved destination like Italy to satisfy the varied needs of a multi-generational group. While children romp in lively town piazzas and olive groves, adults can admire the endless iconic sites — and Italy’s famed cuisine appeals to just about everyone. Doyle suggests booking widely available villa accommodation for big groups: “Staying in an Italian villa is a bucket list thing to do and it meets the needs of multigenerational families,” she says.

01 Dining al fresco while the kids play in the piazza — yes, please!

02 Cooking classes, such as pastamaking, involve the whole family.

03 There are more than 200 beaches in Sardinia, like this one in Buggerru.

04 Lombardy’s Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso, on Lake Maggiore.

What to do

At Lake Garda in the north, older travelers can lounge by the water as adventure seekers go kayaking, cycling or hiking. In Bologna, the UNESCO-listed architecture may not wow the kids but the Gelato Museum Carpigiani, just outside the city, is a delight for all ages.

Where to eat

Get the whole group in on a cooking class, a hands-on activity that’s also great for bonding. Cooking classes are as ubiquitous throughout Italy as Vespas, but Tuscany is a popular destination for getting a lesson in hand-making pasta or perfecting your pizza-dough toss.

Planning tip

Add separate extensions to the family trip to pursue individual interests: After a week-long villa stay together, grandparents might head to Rome to take in more historic sites, while families with kids seek sunny skies and sands in Sardinia.

WITH YOUNG KIDS

Costa Rica

Mind-expanding levels of biodiversity and thrilling activities like ziplining make Costa Rica a top pick for adventure-seeking young travelers. “Kids of six or seven love animals and love to explore,” says Doyle. The country’s untamed rainforest will capture kids’ imaginations while its well-developed tourism industry puts parents at ease.

01 Get up-close and personal with the Costa Rican rainforest high up on a suspension bridge.

02 Cacao fruit undergoes a magical transformation to become chocolate.

03 The sloth is Costa Rica’s national animal.

What to do

In Alajuela province, walk across hanging bridges looking for rare birds at Arenal Volcano or cruise across stunning Lake Arenal on a paddleboard. A few hours’ drive away, Monteverde Cloud Forest is a magical setting for ziplining, while the sloth sanctuary at nearby Selvatura Park is where families can see Costa Rica’s sweet, slowmoving mascots. Learn about conservation at the Kids Saving the Rainforest sanctuary in Manuel Antonio on the west coast or, farther south, snorkel amongst the parrotfish and puffers at Cano Island Biological Reserve.

Where to eat

Families with a sweet tooth will love discovering how chocolate is harvested and produced on one of Costa Rica’s many familyrun farms. At Two Little Monkeys near La Fortuna, kids can view cacao trees before making their own chocolate drinks and bars.

Planning tip

Plan a few beach days in an action-packed itinerary. For example, follow up a high-octane visit to Manuel Antonio National Park with a side trip to pretty Playa Espadilla Norte.

Brazil

Best known for Carnival, this fascinating country has a knack for making every day feel like a celebration. “Brazil is slightly off the beaten path, but it’ll blow you out of the water with its scenery and culture,” says Linda Janourova, a San Francisco area-based travel advisor. From secluded stretches of sand and remote rainforests to buzzing cities and high-spirited beaches, Brazil seduces couples who want to get away from it all — and those ready to plunge right into the action.

What to do

Brazil is vast and there’s so much to see and do that it takes careful planning to narrow down your itinerary. Janourova recommends Iguazú Falls, a soul-stirring wonder where more than 250 waterfalls cascade through the dense jungle. Rio de Janeiro is a standout for white-sand beaches, pulsating nightlife and diverse architecture. But don’t miss Salvador, up the coast, to get better acquainted with the African influences that shape Brazil’s food and culture.

Where to eat

In Salvador, book a table at Casa Tereza to taste modern riffs on traditional Bahian fare like feijoada — a black bean, pork and beef stew that is considered Brazil’s national dish — in an eclectic, art-filled space. In Rio, Térèze pairs fresh, locally sourced ingredients with sweeping Guanabara Bay vistas.

02

Planning tip

February is the time to visit to enjoy the electrifying build-up to Carnival, but this is also the peak season for prices and crowds. Travel in March, April, October or November to enjoy warm weather and quieter streets and beaches. 

Split

Decision

Why less together time could be the key to a successful family vacation.

With

files from Claire Zlobin

OPPOSITE, TOP TO BOTTOM

Paddling on Emerald Lake, one of Banff’s prettiest; a hiker high above Peyto Lake in Banff National Park.

When Claire Zlobin started planning her family’s trip to Banff National Park, she knew her challenge was to balance the wants and needs of all: an adrenalinejunkie husband who craves adventure, and two kids, ages eight and four, who thrive on slow days with plenty of breaks. The family had taken vacations where they’d imposed a “one-size-fits-all” itinerary, spending every minute together as a unit, which limited their activities. For their trip to Banff, Claire decided they would divide and conquer, splitting up for hours at a time to accommodate everyone’s interests.

Calgary-based travel advisor Shannon Olson is a fan of this approach. “My husband and I recognize that time alone helps us recharge,” she says. “Then when we’re together as a family, we’re more present for our kids.” When her two children were young, the family would often stay in resorts where her husband could book a 6 a.m. tee time while everyone else slept in. When the kids napped in the afternoon, Shannon would head out for a solo spa treatment.

This method works well when only one person in your clan loves a specific activity. For their Banff trip, Claire and her husband Denys chose to split parenting responsibilities on some days, whereby one parent spent the morning on a scenic Rocky Mountain hike or at a mountaintop yoga class, while the other stayed with the kids to explore the Banff townsite or play in their hotel’s pool. They reunited for dinner and swapped bedtime duties.

Sometimes, it can work to split up the kids, too. “My older child enjoys sports,” Shannon says. “When we visited Madrid, my husband took her to a soccer game while my younger one and I went to markets and had gelato.” This type of day may involve negotiation, but it’s often better than forcing the kids to sit through experiences they won’t appreciate.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT

A soak (or splash) in Banff Upper Hot Springs; Banff has something for every family member, plus a lively town center; petits fours and tea at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

That said, kids also need to learn to go with the flow, Shannon says, and a family trip should involve some shared events that everyone will enjoy. In the Rockies, Claire’s family took a Mount Assiniboine helicopter tour, went for high tea at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and soaked in the Banff Upper Hot Springs together. Shannon recommends planning no more than one excursion per day and arranging tickets and bookings in advance for a time slot when your kids are generally in a good mood, like right after breakfast.

For Claire’s family, splitting up for certain activities was the answer to keeping everyone energized and receptive. Her kids weren’t forced to hike for hours, Claire and her husband were able to indulge their outdoorsy sides and both got to see a breathtaking piece of the world through their children’s eyes. Each day culminated in the sharing of their stories and perspectives, she says. Thanks to hours apart, they were able to cherish the moments when they were together. 

Three Tips for Traveling with Kids

Ask an expert

Your hotel concierge will know the ins and outs of local kidfriendly hot spots, says Calgarybased travel advisor Shannon Olson. Call them in advance for recommendations.

Keep it short

When enjoying activities all together, don’t stay too long at one attraction, such as an art gallery. Instead, aim for an hour, pick just one zone to explore and consider visiting twice if you need more time.

Plan a date night

Bring along the grandparents, book a hotel with a babysitting service (Fairmont Banff Springs’ “Kids @ The Castle” allows little ones to enjoy the resort sans parents) or order room service and dine on the balcony once the kids are asleep.

Deposit is non-refundable, applicable to sailings outside of the final payment due date, and is valid for all ships, stateroom types, and sail dates. Changes made to the reservation may result in the assessment of cancellation penalties or service fees. Full names are required for each guest. Carnival reserves the right to withdraw and/or change the offer at any time without prior notice. Price Protection applies to the cruise fare only and does not include taxes, fees and port expenses. Taxes, fees, and port expenses range from $81.62 to $494.65 and are assessed on a per-guest basis for all guests according to the itinerary. If applicable, price protection will be subject to the prevailing taxes, fees, port expenses and/or fuel supplement. Carnival will honor your request for price protection if the reduction in the total amount paid for your booking results only from a lower cruise fare and not from the booked ancillary services, such as air, transfers, pre-paid gratuities, or taxes, fees and port expenses.
