OAK LEAF A loose-leaf variety made up of heavily lobed leaves, like an oak leaf. Harvest the outer leaves often. After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or manure, follow any instructions carefully and wear gloves and suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets. COS Also called romaine, this lettuce forms a tight head of sturdy, long and crisp leaves. Pick outer leaves while the head grows.

BUTTERCRUNCH Much loved for its mild butterflavoured leaves and smooth, velvety texture. Great as wraps or in sandwiches.

Yates’ dual-action products let you spend less time worrying about your lawn and more time enjoying it.

Store products out of reach of children and pets, and always follow the instructions. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Anyone who has sunk their toes into cool grass on a summer’s day knows the value of a lawn. As well as its luscious feel under bare feet, it’s a stage on which family memories are made, from wobbly first bike rides to backyard soccer and barbecues with friends.

Mowing and watering are grass fundamentals, but really optimising your lawn means feeding it nitrogen and iron, the key nutrients it needs, plus waging war on weeds, such as Onehunga weed, clover, dandelion and thistles. Enter Yates® Weed ‘n’ Feed ® , the fuss-free combination solution.

1 Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed® hose on lawn weed killer, $27.94/4L, I/N: 0114242. 2 Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed® granular lawn weed killer $36.94/12.5kg, I/N: 0303080. 3 Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed® concentrate lawn weed killer, $12.94/1L, I/N: 0325152. 4 Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed® mosskiller lawn weed killer, $41.94/6kg, I/N: 0119805. CARE FACTOR

There are three easy options to apply Yates Weed ‘n’ Feed. The ready-to-use hose-on pack is ideal for large areas of lawn. The bottle clicks onto your hose and includes a handy on/off switch to help prevent waste and save water. For smaller lawns, choose Yates® Weed ‘n’ Feed ® Concentrate – it’s ideal for application with a watering can or garden sprayer. Or there’s Yates® Weed ‘n’ Feed ® Granular, (best choice for kikuyu) which you scatter across your lawn like seed, then water in after two days – it gives you more control, ideal for treating patches of weeds. It’s a handy solution for awkward areas that aren’t easily accessible with the hose.

Consider what you need from the space and experiment by looking at pictures of colourful rooms and thinking about how they make you feel. “We all require different things from a study/home office, depending on the type of work we do,” explains Davina. “You may want it to be a serene spot where you won’t get distracted, or an energising and uplifting one that inspires creativity.”

While commercial offices take neutral styling to the extreme, a home office allows you to set up a space that reflects your personality and overall style – and can even help you focus on your work. Davina Harper, Dulux colour specialist, says your study should be a space of calm and concentration – and, more importantly, “somewhere you actually enjoy spending time.”

Styling your workspace

The psychology of colour Interior design is both an art and a science: the way a room is put together can affect how you feel when you’re in it. Colour psychology examines how colour works on a subconscious level, influencing the way you feel; colour can even affect decision-making. There’s an element of subjectivity to colour psychology but, as a general rule, warm colours such as red, orange and yellow are stimulating, while cooler colours, like greens and blues, are calming.

could help lift your spirits. These warm shades can also encourage creativity – handy if you work in a creative field and rely on blasts of brilliance.

“It can even help you find your wall colour – the beautiful green used on the walls is echoed in the artwork,” says Fiona. The natural theme continues with blond wood, a jute rug, rattan pendant and potted plants – plus an added touch of brass in the floor lamp for glamour.

If you’ll be greeting clients in your home office or holding regular video meetings, you might want a colour with more gravity – a deep burgundy is associated with tradition and formality. Blue can evoke feelings of trust, stability and reliability, so a sophisticated navy might help to inspire all-round confidence. A freshly painted home office makes it much easier to start work every morning. Keep the styling simple and uncluttered and let the colour shine!

CREATE A CALMING SPACE Muted green tones are

Stylist Fiona Gould says a soft shade of green is the perfect backdrop for an office space that will help you to feel calm and centred. “It’s the colour equivalent of three deep breaths,” she says. For the most soothing effect, opt for blue-based, rather than yellow-based, greens – deep emerald or turquoise are more calming than zesty lime. The green of this room (left), Dulux Wellsford, is crisp and fresh, but still a little muddy and muted.

“It’s a colour that recedes into the background rather than shouting from the walls,” explains Fiona. When choosing a colour, look at what else will be in the room. A moodboard can help ensure all the finishes and key pieces sit together harmoniously before committing to a colour.

Not every home will have a whole room to use as an office, but an office nook can be just as effective and bursting with personality! Plenty of home office spaces are compact and tucked away in a corner, for instance, or under the stairs. The bonus appeal of a smaller area is that it’s easier to find the confidence to be bold – and faster to repaint if you’re not happy with the result. In this space, the rich mustard shade of Porter’s Paints Sundance has been used to create an arched office nook. “Curved shapes are everywhere right now, and a painted feature is a fantastic way to capture the trend,” explains Fiona. “Here, a wide arch shape defines the desk area, which is a clever visual trick if your office nook is part of a larger space, like the living room. And the colour is so invigorating, but also warm and welcoming.”

Knowing what’s already on your shelves is an easy way to cut your costs at the supermarket – and the satisfaction of a tidy pantry, in an impeccably organised kitchen, is priceless.

PLAN IT STORAGE SOLUTIONS

From nifty internal fit-outs to smart shelving suggestions, find fixes for your pantry and kitchen cupboard challenges right here.

torage issues in the kitchen are often not the result of lack of space, but poor design: oversized drawers, awkward corner cupboards and neverending deep shelves. This can be a particular problem in pantry cupboards, where lack of organisation can lead to food waste and shopping double-ups.

INNER PEACE TAKE YOUR TRIUMPHORGANISATIONALACUPBOARDSKITCHENFROMJUMBLEDMESSTO

A dedicated spot for tea, coffee and toast is practical – and easy to hide behind closed doors

Take cues from cooking Key to planning a new kitchen is figuring out where everything will go, then designing storage to suit. Even an existing layout can get a new lease of life if you rejig its interior workings. Think about the bigger picture – for example, how you cook and what items are best kept readily at hand.

Chelsea Smith of The Organising Platform suggests storing spices “in a narrow drawer close to the cooktop”. Oils and condiments might be better located in a narrow pull-out cupboard near the stove. Within the pantry, it is useful to position items according to how often you use them, says Monique Parker of Kaboodle Kitchen. bunnings bunningsnz bunnings.co.nz

Baskets and tubs are another way to keep packaged or loose items under control. Chelsea says, “Store like items grouped together and clearly labelled in a clear divided tub – this makes it easy to keep track of what you have and manage bulk packaging.”

Choose stackable tubs to maximise every centimetre. Label containers and, for bonus organisational points, Chelsea suggests noting the food’s expiry date on a little sticker, which you can put on the container’s base.

Internal wireware wizardry can also amp up accessibility and storage.

Utilise every centimetre of tricky corner cupboard space with clever internal

“Corner cabinets are often underused due to their hard-to-reach location, so retrofitting some wireware will help increase functionality,” says Monique.

Further improve organisation with a few handy products. Non-slip drawer liners stop contents sliding around, while drawer inserts enable grouping of like items, tightly packed for less movement. A turntable – accessible with a quick spin – can corral jars and bottles within a cupboard, while door-hung spice racks or baskets, plus shelf stackers or tiered shelves, can help keep small items neat and visible.

Make every bit count Try to avoid deep shelves within the main pantry cupboard. “These are not functional pantry storage,” explains Monique Parker. “They are hard to access and make it easy to forget what you actually have on hand.”

“Items that aren’t used as frequently should be placed on either the top or bottom shelves, and the ones in between should house all your ‘extras’ – think rice, tuna, soup – things you don’t need every day but may need throughout the week.”

“You can use corner or blind corner baskets for storing appliances, large bowls and containers, or you could even use the space to store all your baking trays and ingredients.”

Match it up

Keep herbs and spices in handy drawers near the cooking area.

“Place frequently used items on the shelves that are at eye or chest level, as these are the most accessible shelves in the pantry,” she advises.

Remember that one person’s perfect vanity is another’s not-quite-right, so think about the needs of your space and your household before you shop. Family matters If you’re running late, then having to queue to brush your teeth, shave or apply make-up can be hugely stressful. To ease the morning rush, opt for a wide (preferably double bowl) unit for your family bathroom.

Regan Clare from Stein suggests a freestanding, floor-standing unit, which will provide ample storage space to keep your products and grooming tools neat and tidy. 

n

|

An inset basin is a better choice for high-use areas. “While above-counter basins are very on trend and allow you to mix and match with your vanity unit, inset basins tend to be much easier to take care of,” Regan says. Gorgeous new finishes for basins include concrete, glass and natural stone, which make stunning aesthetic statements in the bathroom. But if practicality is top priority in your household, a vitreous china finish is the easiest to clean – the surface allows toothpaste or makeup smudges to wipe off effortlessly.

Don’t forget to consider the area above the vanity, too – is there space for a mirror, cabinets or lights to hang comfortably? Also investigate the plumbing requirements; leaving it in the same spot is the least expensive option, but if you’re switching from floor-standing to wall-hung, you may need to have drains and plumbing rerouted.

|

“Basins with less detailing are always easier to maintain,” says Regan. 

n

It’s likely you and your partner may need the ensuite vanity at the same time. If space allows, opt for a double basin, but if this isn’t practical choose a single basin with space around it. To maximise your storage think carefully about your morning routine and how this applies to vanity use. Is there room for make-up, hair products, styling tools and toiletries? The ensuite is usually a smaller space, so consider other bathroom ‘obstacles’ in its final placement. Bunnings bathroom buyer Liam Gregory says, “Think about the layout of the bathroom to make sure the drawers of the vanity do not interfere with the ensuite shower or walls.”

38

LOCATION IS KEY Whatever vanity you decide on, make sure you’ve got it positioned correctly – there’s nothing worse than a shower door crashing into it daily, having zero room for cleaning around it, or bruising your hip every time you walk in or out of the bathroom. Allow a minimum of 300mm for entry, exit and cleaning access. “Make sure you carefully plan enough space for opening drawers and cupboards,” says Regan.

Ensuite dreams

Petite powder room By their very nature, powder rooms are small – and a compact vanity is ideal. “Size really does matter with a vanity, especially when you’re trying to fit it in an alcove,” says Regan Clare. “You don’t need much storage space in this situation, so a wall-hung countertop unit would work.”

Basin basics Above-counter basins (see opposite) provide additional visual interest, especially with the choice of colours available. They give bathrooms a chic, luxurious ‘spa feeling’, says Liam. While being stylish, an above-counter basin can be harder to clean, as you have to get behind the basin and around it. As it is set higher than other basins, make sure you choose tapware at the appropriate height.

11 Watch it! Floor-standing vs wall-hung With their floating, contemporary look, wall-hung vanities are perennially popular and give an illusion of spaciousness in tighter rooms. Other benefits include the ability to hang them at a customised height, and having a space beneath leaves room for items (or storage baskets) to be tucked underneath. Ensure your wall is structurally sound enough to hold the vanity, and factor in the cost of hiding your plumbing. Don’t underestimate the power of furniture to transform a home. Invest in beautiful statement pieces that bring a smile to your face – and that will stay with you when you leave. If space is at a premium, as it often is in rentals, select furniture with a double purpose: a sofa with a fold-out bed for guests, coffee tables and ottomans with storage, and entertainment consoles with drawers and cupboards.

Interlocking vinyl planking is simple to install – and later remove – and can quickly cover tired timber or cracked tile floors. It comes in a great range of finishes and is affordable. Fun and fab for kids and playrooms, interlocking foam tiles are another inexpensive and quick flooring option. Carpets can’t be ripped up and relegated to the bin in rental properties, but rugs can be easily layered over uninviting spaces.

For a flooring fix that looks like timber, use glue-free vinyl planks

6 Storage is king

Mirror, mirror… ‘Dark and dingy’ are words too often associated with rentals, but this can be eased with the clever use of mirrors. By enhancing light and giving the illusion of space, mirrors are transformative, affordable and removable. Go big with a statement mirror over a console or mantle, hang a gallery of mirrors as a design feature, or create a new ‘window’ by positioning a mirror to reflect a view.

3 Furniture features

Many rentals aren’t blessed with great built-in storage, leading to unnecessary clutter. As well as multifunctional furniture, look to storage solutions like freestanding wardrobes and cube units, which are simple to assemble and remove at the end of the tenancy.

n For safety, standing storage should be anchored to a wall. If you are allowed to attach furniture to walls, choose fixings suitable for your walls (seek professional advice if unsure about the type of hardware). Before drilling, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional.

n Always ask your landlord or rental provider before making changes to a rental property. Most minor changes are allowed if they can be easily reversed and are not damaging or unsafe. Visit tenancy.govt.nz for more information.

Minor kitchen f it-out Kitchen hardware can be replaced in just hours, yet can totally transform a space with minimal cost and effort, says Monique Parker of Kaboodle Kitchen. The colours and materials used will make a big impact – matte black gives a modern, streamlined feel, while brushed brass can create a sense of luxury. “If you want the space to have a vintage vibe, handles sourced from secondhand or antique stores will help to add personality and charm,” she says. Always run it past the landlord first and consider the dimensions of your existing handles to ensure you’re replacing these with ones of the same size. “You don’t want to be drilling additional holes into the kitchen doors,” Monique adds.

Large amounts of dust or toxins can impact the quality of the air you breathe, so it’s important to get rid of these for people in your household who suffer from allergies and asthma. While vacuuming helps, giving your carpets a deep clean twice a year is recommended. This helps eliminate embedded and visible stains, dirt and odours. It’s also helpful in removing harmful bacteria, mould and allergens such as dust mites and pet dander.

Window coverings gather dust, mould and tricky stains so should be cleaned at least every six months, but don’t just bundle them into the washing machine without reading the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Many can be handwashed in cold water using a gentle detergent (not bleach) and line dried from their hooks. Always wipe down the curtain rail and give the inside of the windows a clean before rehanging. If washing them seems like too much work, steam cleaning is an option for unlined curtains.

1 Carpets & upholstery

While the loo undoubtedly gets a weekly clean – perhaps even daily if you have small children – it’s a good idea to give it a thorough once-over every few weeks, and a spring-clean provides perfect timing. This includes disinfecting all surface areas, the floor and surrounding walls, too. If there’s significant grime building up, try scrubbing the bowl with a mix of baking soda and vinegar, or squirt in store-bought loo cleaner and leave overnight. If this doesn’t bring the results you’re after, try draining the bowl and using a light abrasive cleaner to attack any remaining problem areas. (To drain it, rapidly tip a bucket of water into the bowl, which will force most of the water down the trap. Use a sponge to soak up the small amount that is left.) Integrated back-to-wall floor pans are a neat, easy-clean option – especially if they have a removable seat

No matter how vigilantly you vacuum, all soft furnishings will accumulate dust and bacteria

Carpet-cleaning machines can be rented from the Hire Shop‡

Use steam cleaners and specialty detergents that work by reaching deep down into the fibres of carpets and upholstery. This gives them a thorough clean and will also help extend their lifetime.

The slats of Venetian blinds are a dust trap. Some blinds, if they’re beyond the job of a feather duster, slat brush or vacuum cleaner, can be taken off their fittings and cleaned in the bath. Place towels underneath to avoid scratching and use a light detergent in warm water to help rub off grime. However, this method isn’t suitable for blinds made of timber or materials that swell. Timber blinds can be cleaned with a wood cleaner or furniture polish.

Tiles Like carpets, tiles and especially grouting need a thorough clean, particularly for removing mould, explains Karcher’s Candice Cooke. “Mould produces allergens, irritants and even toxins,” she says. “Simply inhaling or touching mould spores may cause allergic reactions, and in some cases asthma attacks.”

Before you pull out the scrubbing brush, steamer or grout cleaners, understand what to use on your floor (check the manufacturer’s instructions). For example, steam cleaners are great for ceramic and porcelain tiles, but not for stone.

2 Dishwasher Like the oven, a dishwasher needs a deep clean to operate to its full potential. Remove the bottom filter and run it under hot water, scrubbing with a plastic brush to clear any food remnants. Then, remove any gunk from around the drain area and door seal, and give other internal parts a scrub with hot, soapy water. If you’re noticing a waft of smoke drifting out when you open the oven door, it’s time to give it a deep clean. “These barbecues require either access to an outdoor power outlet, plumbed natural gas or smaller LPG bottles.”

“While they take longer to heat and tend to produce more smoke, many love the delicious smoky flavour they produce,” says Nick. Some larger models offer the best of both gas and charcoal, such as the Char-Griller Double Play.

To help you choose the size of your barbecue, use the number of people you regularly cook for to determine the quantity of burners you’ll need, advises Victoria Anderson, outdoor living category manager for Bunnings.

Similarly to gas barbecues, charcoal ones can also be portable, but are fuelled with lumpwood or briquettes.

Grilling baskets allow you to flip whole fish, toasties and burgers with ease.

“For a family of up to four people, a twoor three-burner barbie will do the job, whereas a four burner can cater for larger groups and gives you the option of cooking bigger cuts of meat,” she says. “When factoring in size, also consider where you plan to use it and allow for generous ventilation and clearance from flammable materials.”

Gas and electric barbecues are fast to get to the desired temperature, notes Nick Graham at Char-Griller. “This gives you the peace of mind of a quick and easy start-up,” he says.

Fuel type: Take your pick from gas, charcoal or electric models and weigh up how each compares in terms of costs, convenience and your preferred cooking style.

Features & accessories: A glass viewing window makes it easy to check food while it’s cooking. Side burners can handle stir-fries, shelves are always useful and a rotisserie kit will turn your barbie into a roasting oven (great for keeping heat out of the kitchen in summer).

Fuel type: Standard smokers use charcoal briquettes, lumpwood or pellets, which come in flavours such as oak and hickory. “The fuel you use depends on the model as well as personal preference and often takes a little trialling, to see what suits your cooking style,” says Nick.

Best for cooking: Large cuts of meat cooked low and slow – think beef brisket, ribs, pork shoulder or belly and leg of lamb. Skill level: Intermediate. “Requires some practice to perfect cooking times and temperature control, but the results are worth it,” says Victoria. “Many owners become enthusiasts.”  bunnings | bunningsnz | bunnings.co.nz 57

Smoker selection

n Check with your local fire service about using barbecues during fire bans.

“A smoker works through indirect heat, where the fuel source is placed away from the food so it cooks low and slow,” explains Nick. Shop for models with excellent insulation to retain heat, such as the Char-Griller Akorn Kamado, which has triple-walled insulation around the steel firebowl. “This will help increase your fuel efficiency and create less variability in the temperature as you cook,” adds Nick. Also ensure damper vents are easily accessible to help control temperature and smoke. Position the smoker in a wellventilated area and consider your neighbours.

Features & accessories: To get the smoker going, Nick advises using a chimney starter: “Ignite the fuel with firelighters at the bottom of the charcoal chimney starter, wait around 15 minutes and you’re away.” For extra smoky flavour, place wood chunks over the fire or insert a steel smoking tube filled with flavoured chips onto your grill plate. “While almost all barbecues come with an external thermometer, a meat thermometer will help determine the exact temperature inside your meat to help take the guesswork out of cooking times,” adds Nick.

Aside from their charming dome shape, one major benefit of pizza ovens is the high temperatures they can reach to achieve a wonderfully crisp base in a matter of minutes. They make a great centrepiece for outdoor entertaining, and removing a perfectly cooked pizza will make you feel like a professional chef!

1 5 2 3 6 4

Fuel type: Traditional woodfired models are the most popular and the flavour they produce is hard to beat. “These require good-quality hardwood fuel cut into small, manageable pieces,” says Victoria Anderson. “Alternatively, gas pizza ovens may be preferable if you’re after convenience and have a smaller outdoor area.”

|

Best for cooking: Homemade pizzas can cook in as little as two to three minutes, depending on the oven. Can also be used for roasting and for baking bread.

Features & accessories: Some models come with a stand on wheels, or you can buy one separately. Alternatively, build a fixed base with non-flammable bricks and include wood storage. You’ll need a few tools to help you cook, including heat-resistant gloves, a wood stoker and a long-handled pizza peel/paddle.

Skill level: Beginner to expert. “A tip is to move the pizza around to prevent the side closest to the coals from burning,” says Victoria. “Also be aware that when you open the door, the temperature will fall dramatically.” As ever, take care around fire and be mindful of heat and hot coals when opening the door. T he post-winter garden is not always a pretty sight but, with some groundwork, you can get your garden beds ready for planting.

Aaron Whitehouse, Mr. Fothergill’s Soil sustenance Feed your soil, not your plants, says Claire Talbot, founder and garden designer at Sculpt manures,Alwaysweekandcompostplantsbasehavepelletsseaweedplentyorganicnurturingground,(sculptgardens.co.nz).Gardens“Yourplantsgrowinthesospendtimethesoil.Addmaterial–applyofcompost,orsheepmanure(bestifyoudon’tdogs)aroundtheofallyourexistingtoensuretheythrive.”Fornewbeds,diginandotherfertilisersletthemsettleforaorsobeforeplanting.usecompostednotfresh.

Aaron Whitehouse of Mr. Fothergill’s believes spring is the gardener’s favourite season.

Start out strong Sow seeds directly into your prepared planting space or into Jiffy pots. “Starting seeds with Jiffy pots can offer them a more protected start and the chance to grow into strong seedlings before being planted out into your garden,” says Aaron. Right now you can plant classic garden vegetables such as beans, capsicums, chillies, eggplants, melons, pumpkins, sweet corn, tomatoes and zucchini, says Aaron. Many herbs also enjoy getting their start in spring, including

“For the best chance of success, be sure to prepare your planting space,” he advises.

For the more adventurous gardener, try something brag-worthy. Look to international cuisine and its varied ingredients –some iconic, such as Italian Roma tomatoes, Thai chillies and Chinese cabbage, and others more unique, including goji berries, burgundy okra,

Using a biodegradable pot for seeds makes transplanting easier – by planting out the whole pot, delicate roots are not disturbed culinary favourites such as parsley, thyme, oregano and basil. “You can add colour to your garden by planting flowers,” he suggests. “Some great choices to start in spring are alyssums, asters, cosmos, marigolds, nasturtiums, salvias, snapdragons and ever-popular sunflowers.”

Once planting is complete, apply a layer of mulch. “Cover garden beds with bark mulch up to 10cm thick, to help slow down weeds and keep the moisture in the soil, ready for another Kiwi summer,” says Claire. A layer of compost, shredded leaves, shredded paper or pea straw can be added to vege gardens. Michael Palm, Oates cleaning products Mind the gap

n Store all gardening products out of the reach of children and pets.

“If you don’t have a plant in a gap, a weed will follow,” says Claire Talbot. “Take a look at your garden beds and notice where the gaps are. Fill these with more of the same plants, or choose additional plants to fill theShespaces.”suggests using repetition to create a cohesive look rather than having single specimens of many plants. “If you like colour and change your garden seasonally, there’s nothing like potted colour to bring some spring cheer,” remarks Claire.

n Always wear a mask and gloves when handling compost, mulch or potting mix.

After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating.

“Neglected decks can look weathered and tired, covered with dirt and grime, and in need of a freshen up”

A good snip Trim plants that have had additional winter growth to keep them tamed and tidy. “They will come away with a flush of new growth,” says Claire. Prune dead, diseased or damaged stems – bin diseased material and put the rest in your compost bin. All hands on deck Revive a deck that’s been neglected during winter with a hosing or light pressure wash (always spray along the direction of the grain), then scrub the surface with a deck cleaning product.

Fill in any bare spots in the garden to prevent weeds overtaking your patch.

n

n If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment.

Michael Palm at cleaning product supplier Oates suggests using a longhandled brush with short, stiff, durable synthetic bristles to scrub and remove unwanted dirt on decks, concrete and patios. Use an appropriate stain or oil, which will provide a layer of protection for the months ahead. Most grimy outdoor furniture can be washed down with soapy water and a sponge, while wrought-iron pieces can be tackled with a water blaster (do a patch test first). Give your deck or patio a thorough spring clean so it’s ready for summer entertaining

Keep in mind…

M ost of us love to make changes to our home, from simple style tweaks to complete room transformations. It can be tempting to quickly launch into projects, but before you begin, spare a thought for safety. Read on for precautions you should take before starting these common DIY tasks.

Exterior and interior painting may involve working at height on ladders and platforms. It’s essential to follow all the safety information and set-up instructions that come with your scaffolding. Philip recommends keeping interior areas well ventilated and, if possible, using an exhaust fan to remove fumes from the space.

“You also may want to consider using a paint product such as Dulux UltraAir, which has ultra-low chemical emissions* and less odour, which can help maintain indoor air quality and allow you to enjoy your freshly painted room sooner,” he says. to ask for help. “When lifting and moving plasterboard sheets, a minimum of two people per sheet is recommended to help minimise the risk of injury and sheet damage,” advises Gordon.

DO IT PROTECT YOURSELF

SAFETY

Painting is easy, but before giving walls a fresh coat, it’s important to know what’s gone before. As Philip Hill of Dulux explains, “In older buildings, it’s possible some of the original external paint or primers may still contain lead and, as exposure can cause adverse health effects, extreme care should be taken.” He suggests using a paint test kit on a sample. “If lead is present, enlist a professional to remove it.”

Another important step is to identify any potential hazards in the space. “One possible hazard, especially in older homes, could be the presence of asbestos,” he says. “If you think asbestos may be present, consult a qualified professional to check before commencing any work.”

A is

Plastering Whether it’s repairing holes and cracks or installing plasterboard, there are plenty of plastering jobs you can tackle yourself – with the right equipment. Gordon White of GIB advises, “When working with plasterboard, always use appropriate safety equipment such as gloves, safety glasses and dust masks. This is especially important when working with compound products during sanding and stopping, which can produceHandlingdust.”larger plasterboard sheets can get a bit tricky, so don’t be afraid PaintingFIRST

The first step when tiling, says Nicole Budge of Johnson Tiles, is to create a hazard-free work zone. “Turn off the water and electricity supply to the area, ensure it’s well ventilated and, before cutting tiles, put on the correct PPE safety glasses, dust mask with a P3 class filter, overhead ear protection and a long-sleeve shirt and long pants,” she says. Cutting tiles with a manual ‘score and snap’ tile cutter or wet saw is best, but if using a dry cutting tool, you’ll need to create a safe zone where flying debris and tile fragments will not hit anyone and can be contained with shields. Wear knee pads and rubber gloves when applying grout to floors. If working with heavy tiles or large quantities, enlist help when lifting and consider moving them with a hand trolley.

Hooks and shelving Creating a focal wall of artworks or floating shelves is a great weekend project. But before drilling holes, check what’s behind the wall. A good stud finder not only helps you find timber to hammer into, it detects hidden dangers. For example, the Bosch universal detect wall scanner alerts you to the location of studs, metals and live wires up to a depth of 10cm in most plasterboard, brick and concrete walls. To prevent potential accidents later, choose a picture hanging kit suited to the weight of your artwork. When selecting shelving brackets, make sure the weight rating is fit for purpose.

2Stud finder Take the guesswork out of locating wall studs or drilling into walls with a dedicated stud finder, metals and live wire detector.

Tiling DIY tiling projects are hugely popular, with enthusiasts making a statement with tiled furniture, walls and floors.

Before turning the machine on, position it parallel to the wall leaving most of the floor in front of you. Once you start, move forward and maintain a slow, steady pace, and always make sure the power cord is well out of the way of the sander while you’re using it. You’ll also need to wear standard safety gear: enclosed footwear, protection for ears and eyes and a dust mask. Once your floors are sanded and the debris is cleared away, then apply the finish. 0908893. floor $75/24 0997253‡. $197, 0079311. 0301420. 6 Dulux ‘UltraAir’ low sheen interior walls paint in Vivid White, $113/4L, I/N: 0283375. 7 Johnson Tiles ‘Urban Cement’ 300mm x 600mm porcelain floor tile in White Matt, $46.15/pack of 6, I/N: 6661684. 8 Feast Watson satin floor finish in Liming White, $169/4L, I/N: 1520376. 9 ToughBuilt 2-in-1 knee pads, $32/pair, I/N: 5821005. 10 GIB ‘Trade Finish Extra Lite’ finishing compound pail, $47.25/15L, I/N: 8905690. 1 Working in a well-ventilated area, set out a drop sheet then place bookcase on it, checking it’s steady and there is room to paint around it. Take out the shelves and pins if they’re removable.

2 Use a palm sander with 120-grit abrasive disc to lightly sand all over to remove bumps and scratches while creating a key for the primer to adhere. Wipe all over with a damp cloth to remove dust.

These sweet, easy-to-peel and firm-fleshed mandarins are bursting with flavour. Compact and suitable for pots, the ornamental tree is ideal if you have limited garden space. It does well in warm spots but will need protection from frost.

Expect generous harvests of sweet, tangy fruit – with few seeds – from winter through to late spring from this hardy tree. Position in full sun in well-draining soil, allowing plenty of space for growth. Mulch well, feed regularly and protect from frost, or plant in containers that can be moved to a more sheltered position.

(Citrus x latifolia) Plant in full sun, in well-draining soil enriched with plenty of organic matter like compost.

Once established, this hardy, low-spreading tree will produce fruit all year long. It’s perfect for the garden or a large pot, and the lemons are smooth and thin-skinned with a sweeter, less acidic flavour than other varieties. Plant in a spot with full sun and feed with citrus fertiliser. Tahitian lime With tangy and juicy seedless fruit and nearly thornless branches, this gorgeous feature tree is a popular choice for gardeners. It can grow up to 4m tall and wide, so look for the dwarf form if you prefer a more compact tree. Can tolerate light frost once established FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.co.nz/plants
