Editor’s letter

Colour confidence builds slowly, and it can take years to get to a point where you apply anything other than white paint to furniture or maybe a wall. But once that first step is taken, a door opens onto an exciting new world, filling adults with that same sense of joy a preschooler must feel when handed a brush and paints for the first time.

In this issue we dip a toe in with a spread of paint projects: a quick furniture upcycle, a beyond-beige treatment for skirtings and door frames, an impactful ceiling and a fun nursery

scheme to engage littlies. Meanwhile, seasoned DIYers from the Bunnings Workshop community have been painting up a storm! Patsy and Rob’s peachy caravan transformation inspires a smile wherever she travels. And why not take a lead from @reno.with.rosie, whose colourful and joyful budget laundry makeover makes washing day a pleasure.

With autumn’s arrival there’s a colour change happening in the garden, too. Now is a great time to deliver some TLC, to contemplate your garden borders and to get to planting something new. Flowering natives, in shrub form or small trees, deliver colour, fragrance and shade, attracting wildlife and pollinators, too.

Nature is the theme for our school holiday projects, so send the kids down the aisles to find the bits and bobs they need for a nature hunt, to set up a bee bath and make a cool mushroom lamp – three fun, colourful DIYs to keep them busy outdoors.

Enjoy the issue,

They used a circular saw to cut Tasmanian oak shelves and PVC sheeting, a laminate trimmer to round the shelf edges and a jigsaw to make bowl cut-outs in masonite board. The painted dowel legs were secured with wood glue, the splashback attached to the lower shelf with screws and the top shelf fixed to the wall with renter-friendly 3M strips. HOLIDAY DIY

Cool for kids

If your teens are looking for a fun project to brighten up a room, this little lamp – with no electricals involved – could be just the ticket. For the base, use a glass cylinder (such as a vase) about 10cm diameter and 40cm high, and a proportional glass bowl for the shade. Mask off their outsides using plastic wrap and painter’s tape. Wearing safety gear, working in a well-ventilated area and, using a cardboard box as a booth, spray-paint the inside of the cylinder and bowl, applying light, even coats, then leave to dry. Tip: Check the paint is suitable for glass. Use dabs of hot glue to attach bead lights in a coil around the inner rim of the shade. Place the battery pack/controller in the base and sit the shade on top.

TOP We used Rustoleum ‘Chalked’ ultra-matt spray paint in Blue Harbour, $19.98/340g, I/N: 0406162. Lytworx ‘Celebrations’ wire indoor/outdoor battery operated LED bead lights, $12.61/pack of 100, I/N: 0223069. All other products, stylist’s own. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Keep lamp out of the reach of small children and pets.

TIME TO CHECK

The clocks go back an hour on Sunday April 7 in those states which use daylight savings time. Make this date a reminder to run through a fire-safety checklist. A potentially life-saving audit of your home might include testing smoke alarm batteries, cleaning the chimney and replacing filters in your airconditioning system or fans. Also make sure you have – and discuss – a fire evacuation plan.

IN THE GARDEN April

Ease into autumn with pretty flowers and shrubs, a spot of lawn care, and root vegie planting

Sow climbing sweet peas (above) near a trellis or fence for a colourful and fragrant spring display. Choose a spot in full sun, with protection from the intense afternoon heat, and improve the soil with compost and organic matter.

Now is the time to plant shrubs, evergreen trees, spring-flowering bulbs and annuals like violas, pansies, alyssum and calendula. Water them in with diluted seaweed solution to promote root growth.

Feed your grass with a slow-release lawn food that’s specially formulated for lawns. It promotes strong leaf and stem growth, encourages a robust root system and enhances resistance to pests and diseases.

After

Plant a garlic crop.

Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil and enrich with organic matter. Separate bulbs into cloves, then plant each clove in holes 5cm deep and 15cm apart.

It’s time to sow some root crops!

Carrot The secret to straight carrots is to sow directly into friable

and well-draining soil. Thin seedlings to prevent overcrowding and keep soil moist. Beetroot Ready to harvest in 8-10 weeks, grow this roast fave from seed in beds and pots in a sunny spot. Parsnip This grows best from seed in loose soil. Takes 16-20 weeks from seed to harvest, but is worth the wait.

Plant a mix of early- and late-season garlic varieties to extend the harvest window

PATCH TO PLATE

When life gives you zucchinis

In subtropical and tropical climate zones, zucchini thrives during the cool season. Here are top tips for growing, harvesting, storing and eating the humble fruit (yep, it’s a fruit).

GROW It needs full sun, well-draining soil, consistent water and regular feeding – but don’t wet the foliage.

HARVEST Pick zucchinis when the fruit is around 15cm long and still small and tender. Zucchinis grow very quickly and can become huge in a few days. The fruit develops a tough skin and large seeds inside as it grows, so the small ones are definitely more edible. Check and harvest your zucchinis regularly.

STORE Place zucchinis in the fridge crisper and keep them dry.

EAT Try making the delish Middle Eastern dish ‘kousa mahshi’ – zucchinis stuffed with minced meat and rice, stewed in a tomato broth.

IN MY TROLLEY

Sarah, NSW,

WALKS US DOWN THE AISLE

After moving to an apartment with more garage space, Sarah needed shelving to hold all her boxes of Christmas decorations, rarely used kitchen appliances and sports gear, which she had been ‘storing’ in her car. A trip to her local Bunnings in Chatswood solved the problem! Within 30 minutes of returning home, she and her brother-in-law had installed handy shelving. “It looks neater and is more organised – I can get straight to the box I need,” says Sarah.

CLEANING HACK

Fan-cy that!

Remove dust from your ceiling fans without the debris falling onto the furniture or floor. Make sure your fan is turned off, then grab an old pillowcase and pull the opening over a fan blade to enclose it. Press your hands against the top and bottom and slide off the blade, trapping the dust in the pillowcase. Shake the dust into the bin, repeat for the remaining blades, then pop the pillowcase in the wash!

PLANT PARENT

The right stripes

Plant name: ‘Sweets’

Plant parent: Helen

Climate: A west-facing Sydney living room with dappled sunlight.

What’s in your pot? Alocasia zebrina, known as zebra alocasia or elephant ear plant. How long have you been caring for your plant?

About four years.

Where did you get it? I saved it from the ‘table of death’ at a plant shop in the inner west, which has since closed down.

Where does it live? Near a large window. Best feature? The beautiful zebra pattern running along all the stems.

Care regime? Very little other than a water every week or so, indoor fertiliser once or twice a year, a few gentle words every now and then, and an obsidian stone in the soil for extra healing and growth energy. Secret hacks? This one seems to thrive in the right spot with just a little bit of love.

A surprising fact about the plant? The surprise is all in the stems – and that it is doing so well! It really is a talking point and when people first see it, they always ask if it’s real. Which, of course, it is!

A LIGHT TOUCH

4 Try a textured wall paint to give an extra dimension and visual warmth. It’s also great for disguising surface imperfections. We used Dulux ‘Light Texture’ in Grey Fort applied with a 12mm-nap roller for a subtle dappled finish, but a large paintbrush used in crosshatch strokes would achieve an even more dramatic result.

5 Spice up a doorway or arch with a different hue. We used the golden glow of Dulux Hay Wain to define the arch and emphasise the elegance of its shape.

MASTERSTROKES

Dip your brush (or roller) and create new treasures

UPCYCLED SIDEBOARD

Thoroughly clean a preloved timber sideboard inside and out with sugar soap, remove door knobs, scrape off flaking paint or varnish and mask off the glass door panels with painter’s tape and paper. Sand to create a key for the paint and wipe away dust. Using an angled brush for detail work and a mini roller on larger sections, apply one coat of 3-in-1 primer inside and out. Leave to dry. Using a clean angled brush and a chalk-paint brush, apply two coats of Dulux ‘Chalk Effect’ paint to the outside, leaving to dry after each coat. Paint interior in a complementary shade, leaving to dry. Clean glass door panels, then attach window film (we used an applicator kit). Add new door knobs.

Made using: Dulux ‘1Step Prep’ primer, sealer & undercoat, 500ml, I/N: 1370231, ‘Chalk Effect’ paint in Bordeaux Cream, 500ml, I/N: 0056005, and sample pot paint in Piglet (inside), 250ml, I/N: 1403730; Monarch ‘Chalk Paint’ 38mm brush, $26.48, I/N: 0319010. Pillar 0.9m static window film in Bronze Tint, $37.52/2m, I/N: 0260541, and 7 piece window film applicator kit, $16.98, I/N: 0422550; and Lane 24mm knurled knobs in Brass, $4.18 each, I/N: 0135446.

CHALK-EFFECT CHAIRS

For previously painted timber chairs, wash down with sugar soap, scrape off any flaking paint, then fill any cracks, holes or indentations with timber filler and leave to dry. Sand filler and any rough areas to a smooth finish and wipe away dust. Using a paintbrush, apply one coat of 3-in-1 primer and leave to dry. Using a chalk-paint brush, apply two coats of Dulux ‘Chalk Effect’ paint, leaving to dry after each coat.

Made using: Dulux ‘1Step Prep’ primer, sealer & undercoat, as above, and ‘Chalk Effect’ paint in Bordeaux Cream, as above, and Old Navy, 500ml, I/N: 0193088.

WALL MURAL

Ensure the background painted wall is clean and dry. Sketch designs in pencil onto the wall. Tip: Imperfectly hand-drawn curves and circles add quirky charm. Starting with the arch colour first, outline the design using a small angled brush, then fill in using a mini roller, applying two coats and leaving to dry after each coat. Repeat with the sun circle. Once dry, mask off the vertical stripe using painter’s tape, then apply the colour as before and remove tape. Use a small round painting sponge to apply random dots to the dry vertical stripe, and a narrow craft brush to paint the sun’s rays and eye.

Sort macramé beads, decide which to leave natural and paint the others using a small paintbrush (we used leftover paint from our other projects), applying a second coat if needed. Cut twine into manageable 1m lengths. Thread beads onto twine, knotting off above and below when you’re happy with the arrangement. Add wooden craft shapes in between the beads, using hot glue to secure to the twine. Knot each length of beaded twine onto a bamboo ring, including a few shorter ones. Take the excess from six evenly placed lengths up through a pair of centred beads and knot off, tying firmly to a length of hanger twine. Trim the other beaded twine lengths at the ring.

Made using: Crafted assorted round macramé beads, $11.50/pack of 82, I/N: 0323862; Boyle assorted wooden craft shapes, $6.50/pack of 40-45, I/N: 0037715; Grunt jute twine, $3.20/75m, I/N: 4310292; and Crafted 10" (254mm) bamboo ring, $4, I/N: 0323883. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Keep in mind…

n When painting, always wear the recommended safety gear, work on a drop sheet, ensure the room is well ventilated and keep tools and materials out of the reach of children and pets.

Beads are a choking hazard –keep them and mobile out of reach of small children.

With an innovative revamp of their 1962 caravan complete, Patsy and Rob are ready to hit the road

“We named the caravan ‘Driving Mrs Marlie’ in honour of Rob’s mum” Patsy, caravan owner

Having experienced the joy of a retro-styled holiday home, Bunnings Workshop community member Patsy (@Patsy60) and Rob, a former builder, wanted to encapsulate those same feel-good vibes in a caravan, which would provide them with endless travelling opportunities. In 2022, the couple found the perfect ‘doer-upper’ –a gutted 1962, four-metre Millard caravan, which they gradually transformed over the next 10 months into the mobile holiday home of their dreams. At the top of their caravan reno wish list were a shower, toilet, excellent cooking facilities and a vibrant retro theme.

“Rob had the skills to fit it out just the way we wanted, and I had fun adding the decorative touches,” recalls Patsy. Since completing the DIY custom fit-out of the caravan, the couple has journeyed up and down the NSW coast and they’re looking forward to more trips, kicking back and enjoying the caravan’s new creature comforts and flamingo-themed flair.

Inside job

The caravan’s internal transformation began with Rob removing the old deteriorating walls, adding new insulation and re-walling it with ply. He then constructed ingenious integrated features, including a built-in bed and kitchen cabinetry, and converted an original cupboard area into a toilet and shower cubicle.

New wiring was installed by an electrician. “A key consideration with caravan fit-outs is weight, so all the design ideas and materials were chosen with this in mind to keep the total van weight below 850kg,” explains Patsy.

Benchtop benef its

The kitchen features a timber panel finished in clear lacquer that forms a durable 600mmwide benchtop. This has been fitted with a compact stainless steel round inset sink. Below the bench, pull-out wire baskets are a practical solution for stowing cooking equipment and pantry staples. “The pullout wire baskets are a great lightweight alternative to standard drawers and are so easy to access,” says Patsy.

“When we bought the caravan, we definitely took on a project”
Patsy, caravan owner

HOW WE DID IT

“The interior of the caravan was completely gutted, apart from the ceiling. Rob installed the walls with a mix of new and old panels, added the framing for the kitchen, bed and shower/toilet cubicle and built the joinery,” explains Patsy. It was rewired and plumbing outlets were added.

“We even had a small washing machine built in,” says Patsy. Final touches included a new colour scheme, decoupage door handles, flamingo stencil motifs, curtains and hanging plants.

Pick up a paintbrush

Painting projects are ideal long-weekend tasks that give maximum impact. For an instant infusion of drama in smaller areas, try embracing the colour-drenching trend, suggests interior designer Charlotte Minty. “This means painting everything the same colour, including skirting boards, walls and woodwork,” she explains (see previous page).

Painting the front door can also provide fresh street appeal. “The colour could be influenced by the architecture of your home, its surrounding garden or the interior,” says Charlotte. Giving the door its very own colour also helps create an identity for your home, she says.

Dated furniture can be revived with a punchy coat of colour. “Also, painting the back of a bookshelf or a vintage sideboard or cupboard with detailing will draw the eye better than before,” suggests Charlotte.

On a smaller scale, painting a picture frame, a little nook or interior doors are all doable projects over the weekend. “If you don’t want to paint the whole door, you can add a bright shot of colour on the edges, which produces a nice surprise when it is open,” says Charlotte. Equally, painting a faux headboard can breathe new life into the bedroom.

2

Soften your space

Soft furnishings add texture and can immediately make a space feel more homely. Introducing a rug, for example, provides welcome insulation and also grounds furniture visually, says Charlotte. “With rugs, bigger is best – at the minimum, the front legs of your furniture should be sitting on it,” she says. “Consider colour and texture to tie in or contrast with existing furnishings.”

For windows, try enhancing existing curtains and blinds by adding trims or using fabric paint. Or, if you want to put up new curtains, Charlotte suggests choosing a fabric with texture that will create interest and make a room feel cosier and more layered in cooler months.

“When choosing new curtains, stick to classic, neutral colours that won’t date”

3Change the hardware

Upgrading handles is an easy, cost-effective way to revitalise a kitchen or bathroom, says Kaboodle Kitchen’s Giorgia Manenti. Consider sleek designs in matt black or brushed brass for a modern vibe, or look at brushed nickel, chrome or stainless steel for a traditional look. “It’s important to consider the style of your kitchen and its colour palette,” says Giorgia. “And choose handles that match the surface area of the ones you’re replacing, to prevent revealing holes in the cabinetry from previous handles.”

4Light up your space

Swapping out a dated light fitting can be a simple DIY job that can make a huge style difference.

More than just practical, floating shelves are a quick way to add flair – and fun

“Shades can be changed on floor lamps, table lamps and sconces,” says Charlotte. “You can use colours and patterns that will bring warmth to the spaces during the cooler season.” Other possible long-weekend updates include swapping out the faceplates on switches and sockets, especially if they are broken or discoloured. Always call on the services of a licensed electrician if any wiring is required.

5Divide and conquer

Shelving offers both practical advantages and significant design benefits. Jessica Haslem of Flexi Storage says this allows you to create visually captivating spaces. “By selecting shelves that align with your decorative vision, you can complete a

EASY UPDATES

space with a more homely feel, making it inviting and personalised.” Shelves are a great way to display books, artwork or decorative pieces – and even plants – helping to create a focal point that adds character.

Open shelving can work well as a room divider. “Strategically placed shelving can delineate different areas within a room, providing a sense of structure without sacrificing an open feel,” Jessica says.

6On a roll

From tropical designs to floral and tiled looks, wallpaper can have a dramatic impact. Bedrooms and powder rooms can easily be revamped with it over the course of a long weekend. Key to making this work is having the right tools and putting in the prep work.

To achieve a quicker, cleaner transformation, stylist Paula Taylor at Graham & Brown advises, “Opt for paste-the-wall wallpaper, especially in smaller spaces.”

7 Boost your security

Use the weekend to tackle a tech upgrade. There are now plenty of affordable and sophisticated DIY security systems you can install yourself. Battery or solar cameras with motion-activated spotlights, wireless functionality, night vision, movement sensors and alarms can be installed in hours. Many also offer live video access via an app. If you want to up the ante, video doorbells are also an easy self-install.

When you think of the Australian landscape, it’s the trees that spring to mind – eucalypts, banksias, wattles and so many more. They look just as fabulous in garden landscapes, too, bringing wonderful shapes, foliage textures and seasonal flowers to the scene, while being easy to grow and supporting a whole range of native wildlife. And you don’t need a large garden to plant native trees – there are many small-sized options that have been specially bred to suit compact backyards.

Locally made

Native trees have the great advantage of being adapted to local conditions, so they’re easier to grow and less demanding. Most species have low water requirements once established – important in an era of climate change – and they’re also well adapted to Australia’s lownutrient soils. Then there are the habitat benefits of local flora – just one native flowering tree can support

a variety of birds, wildlife and pollinating insects as they leapfrog their way between food sources across the suburbs. Birds, in particular, benefit from these green highways, explains Holly Parsons from BirdLife Australia. “Native trees offer shelter, perfect nesting spots and a delightful feast for our avian neighbours,” she says. “Different trees provide different resources that birds need, so mix it up.”

The main feature

The best native species to use as feature trees are the flowering types – an explosion of seasonal blooms will grab the eye every time. At the top of the list would have to be the flowering gums (forms of Corymbia ficifolia) which bear stunning summer flowers. ‘Summer Red’, ‘Summer Beauty’ and ‘Baby Orange’ are three lovely smaller forms that grow 3-6 metres tall. For a splash of scarlet red at Christmas time, the NSW Christmas bush is great, too – it forms a shapely tree up to about 6 metres high. If you like your flowers perfumed, consider native frangipani (Hymenosporum flavum), a slender grower with shiny leaves and

HOMEGROWN HEROES

No matter the size or style of your outdoor space, there’s a flowering native to suit. Here are eight worth a look

cream-to-yellow fragrant blooms in spring. The frothy white blooms of Melaleuca linariifolia, known rather romantically as ‘Snow in Summer’, make it another good choice for a native feature tree.

When planting trees as features, get the placement right. Position them on their own in the middle of a lawn, or in a prominent position which puts them front and centre when viewed from the house or a back deck.

Shady characters

The flickering shadows of swaying tree branches look lovely on a lawn and also offer important sun protection. If you’re choosing native trees for shade, think about shape and proportions, and choose species that are within your preferred height range. Eucalypts, with their open branch structure and narrow leaves, provide a light filtered shade, and these days there are many smaller varieties in the 6-10m range.

The willow myrtle (Agonis flexuosa) is another lovely shade tree, with a broad head of weeping branches and small white flowers in spring. For something a little larger, try one of the shapely banksias – Banksia integrifolia (coast banksia) is beautiful with its gnarled trunk, silver-backed leaves and lime-green/yellow flower spikes.

Screen stars

To give a garden privacy and create a sense of leafy enclosure, focus on boundaries and fence lines. The ideal trees for these zones are species with dense evergreen foliage which can be pruned back if they get too tall. Lilly pillies can create the effect of a tall hedge and respond well to pruning – there are dozens of forms available.

The lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) is another dense-foliaged tree with the bonus of aromatic leaves that can flavour food and drinks. It responds well to trimming, so can be kept to more shrubby proportions.

The ivory curl tree (Buckinghamia celsissima) produces a display of cream flowers in summer and autumn, and medium-sized wattles (Acacia species) are great if you’re after quick privacy. Macadamia trees also make an effective screen or windbreak and can be trimmed to a suitable height.

THE RIGHT HEIGHT

When choosing any garden tree, always check the height and width details before you buy. The plant label is a great resource as it provides the dimensions of the tree when mature –these are given as a range to allow for different climate and soil conditions. For extra information, speak to a nursery expert, or do your own research online.

Weed, feed and flourish

Restore your tired lawn with one easy treatment, using Yates Weed ’n’ Feed®

Festive barbecues, backyard ‘camping’ sleepovers and Easter egg hunts – not to mention summer’s heat and dry winds – take a heavy toll on grassed areas. Lawns can develop bare patches that are like magnets for weeds, which take full advantage of stressed turf. Get rid of those pesky invaders and treat your lawn at the same time with Yates Weed ’n’ Feed

EFFORTLESS WEEDING

Take control of your garden’s wellbeing with Yates Weed ’n’ Feed, a specialised solution designed to excel in eliminating invasive clover, thistles, bindii and dandelions. These stubborn intruders not only compete with your grass for space but also target vulnerable areas, such as bare patches.

Weeding isn’t a chore with Yates Weed ’n’ Feed. The active constituents in the range selectively kill broadleaf weeds – all in one easy application. The herbicide will make a visible difference

to your lawn’s weed problem in no time at all, as weeds absorb it through their leaves and die within four weeks.

FERTILISE TO THRIVE

Weed ’n’ Feed™ also acts as a fertiliser by adding nutrients to help bring your grass back to its pre-summer best. After application, soluble nitrogen and iron get to work promoting fresh green growth in a matter of days! With this new lease of life, healthy grass can then thicken over sparse areas and combat any future creep of weeds more effectively.

CHOOSE YOUR TYPE

There’s a Weed ’n’ Feed for every lawn size. Easy-to-use Hose On attaches straight to your garden hose and a 4L bottle treats up to 260sqm. Granular Weed ’n’ Feed is sprinkled by hand over watered grass – perfect for compact areas.

Weed ’n’ Feed BuffaloPro is specially formulated for buffalo grass and can also be used on varieties including couch, kikuyu and fescue – check the packaging in store or online to look out for your lawn type. Not sure what grass variety it is? Then BuffaloPro is your best bet.

Perfect for tackling thistles, bindii, clover and dandelions, Yates Weed ’n’ Feed comes in varieties suitable for buffalo and other common lawn types

“ Native trees become like luxury rest stops for birds”

Natural magnets

One of the rewards of planting native trees, rather than exotic species, is the fact you’re helping to support native wildlife. Native bees, butterflies and other insects and wildlife have all seen their habitats shrink as cities expand. Planting native species helps redress the balance, explains Holly Parsons. “Picture a city where trees form a leafy network weaving through the urban landscape. This canopy isn’t just pretty, it’s a vital connector for wildlife,” she says. “Birds, insects and other creatures use it as a green highway, allowing them to move freely, find food and create a thriving urban ecosystem. For wildlife, native is best.”

Shake it out

Just a sprinkle of care could take your lawn from lacklustre to lush. Yates® makes it easier than ever!

If you find lawn chores a bore, but you still love a lush backyard view, Yates has the answer. The key to a green and healthy lawn is feeding it the nutrients it needs to thrive and, with the new Yates® Dynamic Lifter ® Lawn Food Shaker, you can deliver a dose of fertiliser with the flick of a wrist!

THE SECRET TO SUCCESS

For a croquet-worthy patch of turf, the first step is to find out what your lawn needs. Compacted soil can be fixed by aerating, which allows more oxygen into the root zone, while competing weeds can often be removed by hand. But the most valuable thing you can do to help your lawn to thrive is to feed it with an organic lawn fertiliser, like Yates Dynamic Lifter Lawn Food Shaker – this helps improve the structure of the soil and gives you stronger, thicker grass that will crowd out weeds.

VICTORY SHAKE-UP

Yates Dynamic Lifter Lawn Food Shaker makes it simple to give your lawn the

love it needs. There’s no need to invest in any equipment or sacrifice space to chunky bags of fertiliser, which means it’s ideal for small lawns or patch repairs. The built-in shaker makes it easy to spread the granules evenly. Simply shake the container to spread the fine granules over the lawn surface, water in well and you’re done! For best results reapply every eight weeks – the shaker container is refillable, giving you even better value.

WATCH IT GROW

Your work is done and Yates Dynamic Lifter Lawn Food Shaker will take care of the rest. The fine granules filter down through the grass, delivering nutrients where they’re needed, without risking fertiliser burn. The organic content in Yates Dynamic Lifter Lawn Food Shaker includes composted chicken manure, blood and bone, fish and seaweed. This encourages earthworms and beneficial soil organisms, which in turn help improve the structure of the soil, and break down nutrients into a form the grass can absorb. It’s as easy as that!

Once summer annuals start to die back, horticulturist and sustainability specialist Adam Woodhams (youtube.com/@Adam HWoodhams) recommends letting nature take its course. “Rather than resuscitate true annuals, pull them out, add them to compost and tidy up perennials whose foliage dies back in the cool seasons,” he says. Allocate space for new varieties you want to grow and thin out clumping plants. “At this time of year, you can divide the old-fashioned but reliable shasta daisy, keeping the young, vigorous plants from the outside of the clump.”

Create an edge

Plants and grass grow and spread over summer, so assert border control with an electric lawn edger and add a sleek finish like interlocking garden edging. As well as creating neat, well-shaped garden beds, edging will help keep mulch in place and create a barrier against running grass varieties.

Banish weeds

The best defence against weeds in lawns is to tackle them before they’ve set seed and spread. Horticulturist Angie Thomas at Yates advises using a hose-on selective herbicide to control common broad-leaf weeds like bindii and clover. “In garden beds, try spot-spraying with a weedkiller,” she says. “Once weeds are controlled, put down a bark chip or pea straw mulch to help reduce their growth.”

PLAN T UP

Set aside garden space where you can reap the benefits of growing your own seasonal food, mixed with a splash of colour. Angie recommends planting vegies like broccoli, onions, garlic, cauliflower, leeks, Asian greens and peas. “To brighten up beds during autumn and winter, grow flowers like pansies, calendula, violas and dianthus,” she says.

LOVE YOUR LAWN

To feed both the grass and the soil, Adam Woodhams recommends applying a quality slow-release fertiliser, watered in with a hose-on seaweed product. “If it’s been very dry, you can spread a soil wetter, too,” he says. “These come as powdered or hose-on products and are best applied before feeding, as they will improve water penetration.” Rather than a weekly mow, adjust your trimming schedule based on grass growth, which slows in cooler months.

Make compost

Save money by creating your own source of rich organic matter using a compost tumbler, bin or pile. Add layers of food scraps, lawn clippings, prunings, leaves and shredded newspaper or cardboard, advises Angie Thomas. “Keep the ingredients moist and turn over regularly to ensure it’s well mixed and there’s air flow,” she says.

“The compost pile should heat up, indicating the micro-organisms are hard at work.” Depending on the weather and ingredients, the compost should be ready for use in 6-8 weeks.

Cover up

As the temperature drops and the pool becomes less enticing, consider covering it during the cooler months. You’ll keep debris out of the water, minimise evaporation and help maintain the chemical levels – so there’s less to top up when swimming resumes. Give the cover a sweep or a blast from a leaf blower as required.

Put the pressure on

Decks, patios and outdoor furniture get a workout during the entertaining season, so blitz grime, spills and debris with a thorough clean. When using a pressure washer, Candice Cooke at Kärcher suggests starting washing

from a distance of around 30cm. “Then move the tip of the lance closer to the surface until you get a suitable result,” she says. “There’s a range of attachments to make cleaning hard-to-reach surfaces and stubborn dirt quick and easy.” Always start with a low pressure; for furniture, first test an inconspicuous area.

Clean gutters

Summer storms and a flourish of new growth can leave gutters filled with leaf litter and debris by the start of autumn. Arm yourself with a ladder, good work gloves and bucket, scoop out the contents and toss it onto the garden as mulch. While tending to the area, also trim any overhanging branches to reduce potential future gutter fill. Another solution that will also help protect your gutters is to install heavy-duty mesh, like Jack ‘Super’ gutter guard.

LEADING EDGES

UNLEASH THE POWER OF PLANTS AND PAINT TO CREATE THE PERFECT FRAME FOR YOUR HOME AND GARDEN

Boundary structures add a layer of security to your home, provide privacy and corral kids and pets. They can also enhance your home’s street appeal, making it look well maintained and stylish. Here are lots of ways to boost your borders.

Repair and revive

Power-washing and repointing the mortar can bring rendered or brick walls back to life. Solid metal fences with scratches and patches of rust can be re-coated with specialist paint products – perhaps in a colour that helps them ‘disappear’, or makes adjacent greenery the star of the show (see ‘Easy paint jobs’, page 46). Timber fencing may be cleaned and refinished with oil or varnish

for a natural look but, if you have replaced palings or panels, painting could be a better option, as well as letting you make a style statement with a fresh shade. When choosing, think about the first thing you want people to see when they arrive, suggests Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr. “If you want something eye-catching, you may decide to paint your fence in a contrasting colour to your home’s exterior to ensure it has impact,” she says.

The choice is yours

If replacing an old fence or building from scratch, decide what you need your new boundary to do. Is it purely to mark the perimeter of your property? A simple row of pretty plants or low pickets could be the answer.

EASY PAINT JOBS

Paint is a speedy refresher, and there are tricks to try depending on the result you’re looking for. “Reduce the focus on your fence by tonally making it the same colour(s) as your home’s exterior colour scheme,” suggests Andrea Lucena-Orr. “Neutrals are usually your best bet here. Painting boundary fences to highlight greenery is also a fantastic way to elevate your front garden. Try whites and greys, blues and teals, and also brown and charcoal in earthy tones such as Dulux Domino or Dulux Namadji. These darker hues work to complement greenery, and can also create a sense of warmth and ‘nature’ that you might be looking for.”

Vertical railings can help keep kids and pets contained, while tall, solid metal fences, brick or painted walls and even a dense hedge can offer security, as well as delivering privacy from a busy street.

Before finalising your choice, make sure to check with your local authority for any restrictions, required materials – such as in bushfire-prone areas –and/or necessary approvals.

Turn to greenery

Hedges make a beautiful living boundary. Look at species that suit your climate and the site’s available sunlight, says horticulturist Chloe Thomson (beantheredugthat.com).

Then, “Consider the height and width you want the fully grown hedge to be, and the shape or shapes you want it to make,” she says. “Are you looking for clean, sharply pruned corners and straight lines? Or do you want your hedge to be a meandering curve with rounded edges?” Think about whether the leaf and flower colour suits your garden style, and bear in mind you’ll need to have the tools required for pruning, adds Chloe. “Really tall hedges may need an extension pole hedge trimmer,” she says.

Plant the perimeter

For a formal or modern garden, buxus species are the classic formal hedge, says Chloe. “But for a native alternative, consider Leptospermum laevigatum ‘Fore Shore’, a coastal tea-tree that will form a low, compact hedge 30-50cm high in most climates,” she says. For a looser, more cottagey style, Chloe suggests Teucrium fruticans or lavender. “Depending on which type you choose, you can go low, knee-height edging or border hedges, or much taller, one-metre high bushes,” she explains. Viburnum odoratissimum (sweet viburnum), with its dark-green, glossy leaves and clusters of white flowers, has scented appeal. “And many of the colourful Aussie natives make beautiful hedges, including callistemon (‘Kings Park Special’), grevillea (‘Moonlight’, ‘Honey Gem’ or ‘Majestic’), or showy honey myrtle,” adds Chloe.

Think outside the buxus

A border could also simply be a row of tall planters stocked with colourful annuals, or spilling over with trailing plants such as Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’. To balance form and function, add climbers to soften a fence or cascade

over a wall. Or combine a hedge along the perimeter with a wellstocked garden bed in the front yard – clipped greenery can look wonderful contrasted with relaxed, perennial shrubs and/or an array of annuals.

When considering front-of-house appeal, don’t forget the verge. If it’s turfed, aim to keep it neatly trimmed. Or ask your local council if this area can be populated with easy-care plants like small-growing natives, or tough grasses or succulents.

Stick around

For science-minded folk, stick and leaf insects – also known as phasmids – can make fascinating pets. Sell the kids on a stick insect friend with these fun phasmid facts!

■ They only eat leaves; freshly cut eucalypt or bush cherry branches in a jar of water is ideal food. Daily misting of the leaves will provide water and help maintain humidity.

■ As they grow, their exoskeleton is shed. They need to hang at least a few body-lengths off the ground to moult properly. A fish tank on its side (at least 30cm high) with a snug-fitting mesh door to allow airflow is ideal.

■ The titan stick insect is the largest phasmid and can grow to 25cm long.

■ Some types of female phasmids can lay eggs without having been in contact with a male. She tosses the eggs into leaf litter, where they’ll hatch after four months.

■ Phasmids are often confused with the praying mantis, which is a carnivorous hunter. You can identify a mantis by their triangle-shaped head with powerful jaws, and front legs designed to grab live food.

SNUGGLE BUNNIES

Thinking of inviting a rabbit into your household? Help it to settle in well with these bunny basics from Kim Cooney, founder of The Rabbit Sanctuary (rabbitsanctuary.com.au), a national network through which you can adopt rabbits.

“Rabbits are best kept indoors, with space to play – a hutch alone doesn’t provide enough room, so add a playpen for extra running room,” says Kim. “Inside the playpen include a large, heavy ceramic dish of water, as rabbits drink a lot and also love to put their paws in the water and wash their face,” Kim says.

Rabbits also need unlimited amounts of grass, a mixture of premium hays and vet-approved rabbit pellets to keep their digestion system working well. Bunnies can be easily litter trained, says Kim. “Fill a large tray with hay or pet litter and place in the corner,” she suggests. “If your rabbit chooses to go elsewhere, spray that spot with white vinegar to prevent a second attempt. Also, remember rabbits are highly social creatures so two are better than one. Opposite sexes get on better and both must be desexed.”

GIVE YOUR INDOOR CAT THEIR BEST LIFE WITH THESE TIPS AND TRICKS FOR A HAPPY AND HEALTHY KITTY

In an effort to protect our wildlife, many councils have begun introducing regulations to stop pet cats roaming. Not only is this good news for our native animals and neighbours, it’s also good news for your cat, says Kylie McKendry of The Cat Protection Society of NSW (catprotection.org.au).

“Cats that are kept indoors are protected from the dangers of cars, cat fights, infectious diseases, injury, other animals and people,” Kylie says. “The average lifespan of a cat with outdoor access is estimated to be some 10 years shorter than that of an indoor-only cat.” Kylie offers this advice for a contented indoor cat.

Entertainment central

“Cats can live perfectly healthy and happy lives completely indoors, as long as you provide them with opportunities to express normal behaviours – things such as climbing frames, scratching posts, window perches, food puzzles, toys, potted cat grass and hiding spots,” says Kylie. While cats don’t need to go outside,

they like to see what’s happening, so place their scratching post or bed near a window (window hammocks with suction cups are popular).

Best of friends

Having your cat inside also means you’ll get to spend more time bonding with them. Even if they’re past the kitten stage, your cat will appreciate at least 30 minutes of play each day –pick a toy you can play with together,

such as a wand. A daily grooming session is another great way to spend quality time with your purrball.

Private time

“Cats need hiding spots or quiet places they can retreat to if they get stressed,” says Kylie. “Provide them with an igloo bed or box they can hide in if they need time out. Make use of vertical space within your home, as cats love escaping to a high platform that enables them to look down on their world.”

It’s also important to have the right litter tray. Kylie says your cat should be able to turn around comfortably inside the tray and have enough headroom. A bit of privacy is appreciated too, as is regular changing of the litter.

Change of scene

If you’d like your cat to have fresh air, try an outdoor enclosure. “There are many options for cat containment, from building an enclosure to installing catproof fencing or enclosing a balcony area to create a ‘catio’,” says Kylie.

“Some cats will find ingenious ways to thwart an enclosure that may not be apparent at first, so whatever your final design, it is very important to supervise your cats in their new enclosure to observe their behaviour and make sure they are unable to escape.”

Stay warm outside

Bring

the cosiness of the indoors to your alfresco areas all year round with Heatstrip outdoor

@HeatstripAustralia

Summer never seems to last long enough, but while the season of warm temperatures might be over, there’s no need to say goodbye to barbecues and outdoor dinner parties. Banish the chill and use your outdoor spaces through all the seasons with Heatstrip, the go-to solution for outdoor heating and comfort.

ON HIGH

When it comes to outdoor heaters, there are a few options, but Heatstrip heaters come out head and shoulders above the rest – literally. Designed to be ceiling or wall mounted, Heatstrip heaters evenly distribute radiant heat down onto the area below them – the dining table or a cosy conversation zone, for example – instead of inefficiently trying to heat the air in between. Since they warm only specific areas and objects, you don’t waste energy heating an entire outdoor room. Sleek and discreet, the black slimline Heatstrip Classic or Heatstrip Enhance sit elegantly and unobtrusively in any space, while the white Heatstrip Elegance achieves virtual invisibility on a white ceiling.

TURN UP THE HEAT

Some outdoor spaces are harder to heat than others and when you’re dealing with a semi-exposed area, with limited protection from the elements, you need a high-intensity heat. Heatstrip Intense is the high-heat, energy-efficient solution. The carbon filament infrared heating element gives instant, high-performance heat with a gentle and visually warming glow.

CONNECT TO CONTROL

Providing instant heat at the flick of a switch – meaning no wheeling out portable heaters or mucking around with gas bottles – Heatstrip outdoor heaters are already winners when it comes to ease of use, but it gets even better; they also come with remote and app control. This smart home connectivity makes it simple to change the heat setting, set a timer, turn it on before you go outside, or check you’ve turned it off at the end of the night. Just use the app on your smartphone, or control via Google or Amazon smart home platforms.

Building from scratch or renovating entails many decisions that relate to your immediate needs, but it pays to consider the years ahead, too. Sustainable design

Designing your home with a warming climate in mind ensures long-term comfort and energy cost savings, says Ian McNicol, senior advisor energy efficiency at Sustainability Victoria. “With good design, especially at the planning stages, you can more easily boost your home’s energy efficiency,” he says.

Tips include situating living areas on the northern side of the house to take advantage of winter sun and light. Avoid large expanses of glazing facing west or east, or make sure they are well shaded for summer, and minimise south-facing windows. Architect Andy

Marlow from Envirotecture, which specialises in sustainable building design, says double-glazed and energy-efficient windows reduce heat loss and gain. “The frame material also matters. Avoid anything that conducts heat well,” says Andy.

Importantly, creating zones separated by doors and corridors means they can be closed off when not in use, minimising energy use.

2

Insulate & ventilate

Insulation not only makes a home more comfortable but can slash heating and cooling bills by 40-50 per cent1

If you can’t afford to insulate every area of your home, start in sections, recommends Andy. “Your roof is usually the easiest part to insulate. It will give you the biggest bang for your buck, so start here. Walls are the next part to tackle, followed by floors,” he says.

Good ventilation is another way to boost energy efficiency and is critical for a healthy home, says Andy. While windows play their part, opening them in colder months isn’t always practical. “Ventilation is best achieved by using fans to remove excess moisture from bathrooms, laundries and kitchens,” advises Andy. “In new homes, a centralised ventilation system with heat recovery is often used for increased efficiency and improved indoor air quality.”

“Ceiling fans will help you feel cooler due to the air movement across your skin even though they do not actually cool the air – magic!”

blocking draughts in your home) is also good for both energy efficiency and health, says Andy.

3 Sun-loving solar

Installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems reduces not only your electricity bills but also your greenhouse-gas emissions2. “If paired with battery storage, PV can enable you to ride out power shortages, which is a great resilience measure,” says Andy. Use a Clean Energy Council accredited installer to ensure all standards are met.

4 Be water wise

Choose water-saving fittings and appliances, and consider installing rainwater tanks to help conserve water. Make sure wet areas can be easily adapted to accommodate future design and technology changes. Investing in heat-pump or solar hot water systems might be pricier initially, but they significantly cut down running costs compared with standard electric or gas water heaters3

5 Light choices

Home Design ‘Grove’ pendant light, $137, I/N: 7071560. Brilliant ‘Orb’ DIY glass pendant light in Black, $75, I/N: 0137651 (globes sold separately)

Good lighting makes a home more pleasant to be in. Correct orientation on the site can deliver light and sunshine in winter, while eaves, awnings and deciduous plants can provide shade and block summer heat. Any new build or renovations should have a shade plan addressing its location and orientation. Research efficient interior lighting for your home. For example, pendants and lamps create a cosy setting without the need for bright downlights.

6 Smarten up

‘Smart’ technology (appliances and electronics connected to the internet) allows you to control things remotely and automatically. Even if you don’t need it now, having the right infrastructure – ethernet cables and electrics – in place will futureproof the house for when you or someone else wants it.

Lighting, shade, curtains and blinds, heating and cooling, ventilation and security systems can all be operated via smart technology.

7 Lifetime homes

Living comfortably at home until a ripe old age is surely everyone’s ambition, and it’s made more achievable by planning ahead. Design considerations recommended by Livable Housing Australia can be incorporated into a new build or renovation, or retrofitted to support comfortable ageing in place.

Considerations include ensuring that at least one entrance is free of any steps and that flooring is slip resistant. Wide corridors and internal doors allow for easy manoeuvrability and windows should provide a view to the outdoors when seated. A ground-floor toilet, barrier-free shower recess and reinforced walls around the toilet, shower and bath to support the safe installation of grab rails are key. Kitchen and laundry areas should have ample space to move around, with accessible under-bench drawers. Put light switches and power points in logical, easy-to-reach places.

SIMPLE STEPS

What you can do now to help futureproof your home

Install an energy-monitoring system and discover which appliances are power gobblers.

Explore a ceramic or induction cooktop as an alternative to gas.

Switch to LED bulbs. They use up to 80 per cent less energy but produce the same amount of light4.

Double glaze and seal older windows, and add shade covers.

Invest in storage. A wall of ‘clever cubes’ in a kid’s room can later move to the home office or living room. Even better, buy furniture that has in-built storage.

Replace flooring to ensure it is level and hard-wearing.

Lay non-slip tiles and install an open-access shower in bathrooms.

Install water-saving shower heads and flow restrictors.

New wardrobe? Add some lighting and pull-out drawers, which are easier to access than shelving.

Wire bedside lights to the wall – it makes them easier to reach and operate in your twilight years.

Join the revolution in home safety

Give your home an extra layer of defence with the world’s first fire-retardant paints from FSA FIRECOAT

With the risk of bushfires escalating in Australia, homeowners are taking steps to keep their families safe, and do what they can to safeguard their most valuable asset – their home. Now FSA FIRECOAT paint offers another layer of protection to help those living in high-risk fire zones. Australian-made, this innovative product is the direct result of groundbreaking research conducted in partnership with the University of New South Wales.

PAINTING RESISTANCE

FIRECOAT paint works by using a revolutionary chemical reaction that forms a thick layer of char when flames hit. This sticks to the wall and helps stop the fire from spreading further. The innovative formula also ensures it’s easy to clean and reapply if your home has unfortunately been exposed to fire.

EFFORTLESS APPLICATION

Aside from impressive fire retardant capabilities, these exterior and interior paints have been designed with practicality in mind. Tough and durable, they’re able to be painted on a range of materials including timber, aluminium, concrete, brick and even plasterboard; it’s a great choice for homeowners and

businesses alike. Available in grey or white, FIRECOAT paints provide the perfect undercoat - that can then be painted over in your chosen hue. What’s more, they are water-based and non-toxic, for easy application and clean-up afterwards.

A PROTECTIVE SHIELD

FIRECOAT paints have been stringently tested to a certified world-first BAL-40 rating. This means they are proven to significantly protect your home against exposure to ember attack, radiant heat and direct flame contact.

Love your alfresco entertaining zone? Then enjoy it year-round with the help of an outdoor heater or two! For regular use, think beyond solid fuel – gas and electric models offer reliability and instant, constant heat, with less cleaning and fewer emissions than wood-burning alternatives. Here’s our rundown.

Moored or mobile?

Make your selection according to the area you wish to heat – is it out in the open or under cover?

Bunnings national electrical buyer John Campbell explains, “Portable heaters offer flexibility and efficiency, especially in open areas, while fixed

heaters might be more suitable for semi-enclosed spaces, due to their directional heat and stability.”

Bottled gas or plug-in electric portable versions come in many different styles and sizes, from the traditional ‘mushroom’ to sleek shapes ideal for a contemporary setting.

Fixed models can be plumbed into your home’s natural gas supply or hardwired, both needing the services of a licensed installer, but they’re great for a long-term option in a covered space you use regularly. They can be mounted high on the wall or from the ceiling for a neat, unobtrusive look, doing away with potential trip hazards and also helping to free up floor space – handy for small areas.

Warming ways

Outdoor heaters work by either directing warmth to objects they’re aimed at (radiant) or warming the air around them (convection).

Radiant heaters offer less heat loss, making them more energy-efficient, says John. To calculate your needs, start by measuring your space to determine the size of the area you want to warm, says the team at Arlec. Next, “Look for the heating capacity. The higher the British Thermal Unit (BTU) rating, the larger the area your unit can effectively heat.”

Safety features, such as tip-over switches, overheating protection and flame-failure devices, are very important. “Even in semi-enclosed

spaces, it’s essential to consider the heater’s resistance to the elements,” adds the Arlec team. “Ensure it is suitable for the specific environment, especially if the area is subject to wind or moisture.” Good ventilation when using gas is essential, as are considerations for all heaters such as observing safe clearances, so always check the manufacturer’s safety instructions carefully.

Choose the best spot

Where you site your heater will affect its heat distribution. For wall-mounted heaters, the ideal height is often around 2.1 to 2.7 metres above the ground. “This allows the heat to spread evenly across the space,” says the Arlec team, who also advise

ON THE BLIND SIDE

ensuring that the heater is not obstructed by walls, tall furniture or other objects that could impede the flow of heat. “Reflective surfaces can help enhance the heat distribution,” says the team. “If possible, position the heater so that it directs heat towards reflective surfaces like walls or other structures that can bounce the heat back into the space.”

Save money and energy

“Generally, electric heaters are considered to be more sustainable than gas due to their higher energy efficiency and lower emissions, even without solar power, as electricity generation continues to transition towards renewable sources,” says John Campbell

Retrofit outdoor bistro blinds for a cosiness boost. If you have a solid structure to hang them from, this can be a DIY fix, and you can have them cut to fit your space – ask at the Special Orders Desk. Typically made from heavy-duty PVC, bistro blinds provide insulation and protection from the elements while allowing airflow. Avoid using them in strong winds, roll up when not in use and keep away from heaters.

“Consider outdoor heaters with smart thermostat features,” says the Arlec team. “These can automatically adjust the heat output based on the ambient temperature, preventing unnecessary energy consumption. Timers allow you to schedule when the heater operates, ensuring it’s only on when needed.”

Other tips include zone heating –using multiple heaters to heat areas that are actually being used, rather than the whole space – and choosing a model with motion sensors. “These can detect when people are present, activating the heater only when needed,” explains the Arlec team.

Before

Like many parents with two young children, Bunnings Workshop community member Rosie (@renowithrosie) spends plenty of time in the laundry, so was keen to make it an inviting space. With plans for an eventual full-scale renovation of their Sydney home, Rosie and husband Alex wanted an interim and inexpensive option to revitalise the tired laundry finishes. So they opted for paint in a spectrum of confectionery hues to create a bright, fun atmosphere.

“I hadn’t planned to include a rainbow on the wall, but my four-yearold daughter loves them and asked if I could paint one when she saw all the colours I’d selected for the project,” says Rosie. She transformed the space in stages over a month. Storage was also improved with a few simple additions. “Beyond thrilled” with the result, Rosie says the laundry is now a joy to be in.

Colour therapy

Rather than replace cabinetry that was still in good condition, or update the old trough sink – which added character, despite its flaky paint exterior – Rosie rejuvenated the fixtures and assembled a coastal-inspired colour scheme. The benchtop was painted with Dulux ‘Renovation Range’ Tiles & Benchtops in Sea Foam, the exterior door and cabinet doors with Dulux Antarctica Lake Quarter, and the outside of the sink with Dulux Winter Fog.

“The abstract bubbles overlaid with leaves and berries tie into the garden, which the laundry looks out on”
Rosie, homeowner
“My aim was to make the space feel clean, bright and fun, as well as to create storage”

HOW I DID IT!

“Step one was a big clean of all the surfaces,” explains Rosie. “Mural outlines were then sketched with a pencil and painted. I gave the benchtop a good sand prior to priming and painting it with a small paintbrush and roller. A similar process was used for the cabinet doors and the trough sink.

Transforming the floor also began with a good clean with sugar soap and warm water, followed by priming and painting, allowing for plenty of drying time between coats. Thorough cleaning and preparation was definitely core to the project.”

Mural magic

“When selecting the palette, I used the Dulux colour app to create a scheme with several base colours and accents in a combination of brighter and darker tones,” says Rosie. Having already painted the walls with Dulux ‘Wash & Wear’ in Natural White, she had a fresh canvas to work with. Murals were drawn freehand in pencil and coloured in with paint, while a spirit level was used to create the deliberately imperfect, handpainted appeal of the yellow and white stripes. The colours used included sample pots of Dulux Pink Chi, Fairy Wings, Paw Paw, Lemon Delicious, White Box Half, Surf Wash and Tapioca.

Fab f loors

Despite its unattractive dirty cream colour, the existing tiled floor was still functional, so Rosie gave it a thorough clean with sugar soap and warm water. She then prepped the surface with a coat of primer before applying two coats of Dulux ‘Renovation Range’ Deep Satin Floors in Winter Fog. “The floor was the most time-consuming part of the project due to drying time, as I allowed a day between

coats, yet it also had the biggest impact by making the space feel larger and brighter,” says Rosie.

Storage f ix

Existing cabinets provided adequate storage for small items, yet without a broom cupboard there was nowhere to store larger bulky items such as the mop and ironing board. The solution was almost instant with the addition of adhesive broom grippers, which Rosie affixed to the back of the laundry’s internal door. n

GOOD SAVE!

Here are Rosie’s top tips for doing a DIY transformation on a limited budget. Consider what elements you currently have, their condition and whether paint can be used to improve them. The key to an expert paint finish is all in the prep. You’ll save time and money if you put in the effort to clean, sand and repeat, if necessary, to provide the right foundation for painting. Paint in sample pot sizes is an affordable way to use a variety of colours without the expense of larger quantities.

Keep in mind…

n

Follow manufacturer’s instructions for accurate dilution of strong cleaning solutions. Wear a mask and gloves for serious cleaning tasks.
When painting, always wear safety equipment (eye protection and mask) and ensure the room is well ventilated.

6 ways to revive your bedroom

PREPARE YOUR SLEEPING SPACE FOR THE COOLER MONTHS WITH A PRE-WINTER FRESHEN UP

1Swap and store

Pack away any summer-specific items, cleaning as you go. Dust fan blades before storing away portable models for the winter (switch ceiling fans to reverse or ‘winter’ mode); wash and store mosquito nets; wash or air lightweight duvets, make sure they’re thoroughly dry, then store in vacuum bags. Give flyscreens a dust with the vacuum brush attachment.

2 Blitz bedding

A clean bedroom starts with a clean mattress, according to cleaning and organising expert Chantel Mila Ibbotson (@mama_mila_au).

“Vacuuming regularly is a simple way to get rid of dust, skin cells and dust mites that may be living inside your mattress,” she says. Spot-clean stains with a gentle detergent and rotate or flip the mattress if possible. Combat odours by

sprinkling with bicarb soda, letting it sit for 30 minutes, then vacuuming. Clean and wash pillows and duvets, as these can accumulate sweat and dust – hence the dreaded ‘yellow pillow’. “Many can be put directly in the washing machine,” advises Chantel.

3Bust the dust

Seek out spaces where dust gathers.

“Upholstered bedheads, armchairs and lampshades can be breeding grounds for dust,” says Chantel. Use a vacuum upholstery attachment on these surfaces. “A little trick is to use a lint roller to capture dust from hard-to-reach nooks like inside fabric lampshades,” she adds. Get under and behind furniture to suck up dust, wipe down walls –a microfibre flat mop works well – and don’t forget the curtains!

4Clear clutter

The bedroom can be a catch-all space for clutter. Beth McGee, author of Get Your House Clean Now: The Home Cleaning Method Anyone Can Master (getyourhousecleannow. com), suggests putting aside one hour to tidy and declutter. “Decide to let go of 10 ‘good’ things by the end of 60 minutes,” Beth says. “Move through your room and remove any rubbish – old mail, wrappers, broken items, etc. Put items that belong in another room into a pile by the door to remove at the 55-minute mark.” Look for clothing you haven’t worn in the past year or more to donate – Beth suggests aiming for 10 donatable items.

The mushroom lamps of the ’70s are back in vogue! Their colourful curves make them a cool choice for outdoor lighting – and the good news is, it’s a fun and simple task to reinvent these retro classics using plastic vessels and remote-controlled, battery-powered lights. Add white spots to create a cute toadstool look, then set them up and turn them on with a flick of the remote control.

Give local bees a hydration station in your garden where they can stop for a drink and also collect fresh water to take back to their hive to help with cooling and honey production. So clever! All you need is a terracotta pot and saucer, and some pretty pebbles in colours a bee can see, such as blues and yellow. The bath should be shallow (1cm or 2cm deep) so the bees don’t drown. Top up the water and clean the bath regularly to avoid sediment build-up and algae growth, and to deter mozzies from breeding in the still water.

1 Use a foam roller to apply two coats of paint in a neutral colour to one side of each placemat. Leave to dry after each coat.

3 Apply two coats of paint to each rectangle using an artist’s brush, leaving to dry after each coat. Remove tape while still tacky, pulling it off on an angle.

2 Mask off a border on painted side of placemat with painter’s tape. Mark six evenly spaced rectangles using a ruler and pencil, then mask edges of the rectangles with tape.

4 On one side of each peg, apply a bead of adhesive to the section below the spring. Position a peg on each coloured rectangle, lining up the spring with the placemat edge. Leave to set.

Keep in mind…

n When spray-painting, wear eye protection, a mask and gloves, and work outside or in a well-ventilated area, covering surrounding areas with a drop sheet to avoid overspray.

n Keep all paint and chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.

n Make sure that any lighting used outside is suitable for outdoors. Any hardwired electrical fixtures must be installed by a licensed electrician.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE PAINT – USING THE RIGHT TOOLS

IS

ESSENTIAL FOR A TOP-QUALITY FINISH

You’ve selected your paint and the drop sheets are ready to roll out, but have you given serious thought to your kit? If you want to paint like a pro, choosing the best brushes and rollers will save you from regret later, says renovation expert and interior designer Naomi Findlay (naomifindlay.com).

“If you don’t have the right tools, more often than not you’ll end up having to do it again, because you won’t be happy with the result and, generally speaking, it’s less effective,” she says. “The right paintbrush, the right roller – it’s essential to have the right equipment.” For a painting project you’ll be proud of, here are the key tools to have in your arsenal.

Brushing up

There are two main types of paintbrush: wall brushes, which are best for large surfaces; and cutter brushes (also known as detail brushes), used for cutting in and for getting precision coverage on trim areas such as skirting boards and window and door frames.

While wall brushes are cut straight across, cutter brushes are either straight cut filament or angled cut filament, says professional painter Mark O’Connor from Monarch. “Both styles are designed to help you cut in walls and ceilings easily and quickly, to deliver a beautiful and professional finish.”

For getting paint into small areas on finely detailed projects, Naomi Findlay recommends using oval brushes, as these tend to hold paint in the centre.

The quality of the brush is just as important as the shape. “The perfect rule of thumb is the softer the paintbrush feels, the better the quality of the brush – the smoother it is, the smoother it puts paint on,” says Mark. And the difference between coarse and fine brushes is in the finish. “A cheaper brush will not feel as soft and therefore it doesn’t hold its shape well, it leaves brush marks in the paint because it’s too coarse and it’s harder to get a professional finish,” he explains. Brushes with stiff filaments may also be inclined to flare at the end,

PAINT-TOOL TIPS

■ Invest in good-quality tools that will last longer, saving you money over time.

■ Clean your brushes thoroughly after use and store them in their original packaging or in a jar (with the brushes facing up) so they go the distance. Store rollers on their ends so the fibres don’t get crushed.

■ Keep your tools in their packaging and only open them when you’re going to use them. If you’ve bought brushes or rollers you don’t need, take them back to Bunnings (with your receipt) for a refund.

making it harder to cut a straight line. “When you use a quality soft filament brush, the end of the brush goes to a precision point, which makes cutting in easier,” he says.

On a roll

Nap length and material are the important considerations when painting with a roller. Nap length (the length of the roller fibres) determines how much paint it will hold.

Using a roller with a longer nap on a smooth surface could mean you end up with too much paint, creating ‘stipple’, an orange-peel effect. “The ideal nap when trying to achieve a silky smooth finish on doors is 4mm – this puts on the thinnest film of paint with minimal imperfections,” says Mark. “A 12mm nap is best for ceilings and walls, as it gives a smooth finish but with greater coverage, so you can do two coats instead of three; while a 20mm nap roller loads enough paint to get into nooks and crannies on rough surfaces.”

The best roller material for a general DIY painter is microfibre, advises Mark. “It gives a smooth finish without losing fluff and is easy to use,” he says. More experienced painters could try polyester or lambswool rollers. “These hold more paint and get the job done faster – but you need to know how to use them,” he warns. To achieve a good finish with polyester or lambswool, you’ll need to roll over the surface once, then go over it lightly a couple of times to smooth the paint.

Little wonders

For citrus success in a small space, pop a sun-loving dwarf variety in a pot or the garden

Dwarf lemon

For year-round fruit with a strong, tangy flavour, choose the popular ‘Eureka’ variety. It flourishes in warm climes and has almost thornless branches. Winter-cropping ‘Meyer’ and ‘Lisbon’ also thrive in warm regions, but tolerate cooler climates if protected from winds and frost.

Dwarf orange

Leave these ones on the tree for a bit, as they become sweeter with time. Tangy ‘Valencia’ oranges are ready to harvest from late spring and perfect for juicing; ‘Washington Navel’ are sweeter, firm in texture (so are easy to peel) and produce fruit from mid-winter. Grow both varieties for a long season of fruit.

Dwarf cumquat

The whole fruit can be eaten and it’s also great for making marmalade. ‘Nagami’ has acidic, teardropshaped fruit; the globular fruit of ‘Meiwa’ are sweeter. Both grow 1.5-2m tall and are considered the most cold-tolerant citrus, coping with light frosts once established.

Dwarf Tahitian lime

This evergreen tree, up to 2.5m tall, has medium, round fruit on near thornless branches. It prefers warm areas but tolerates colder climes with frost protection. West Indian or key lime (Citrus aurantifolia) grows into a small bush to 3m high with smaller, seedier and tarter fruit.

(Citrus sinensis)

Suits areas with hot, dry summers and dry winters; grows to 2m tall. As with all citrus, fertilise regularly.

The thin-skinned, juicy and almost seedless fruit appears from mid-autumn to mid-winter.
