Keen to assist students who needed a little help finding friends at his children’s school, Bunnings Workshop member Michael (@mlb_diy) ran the idea of a ‘Buddy Bench’ by his son Chase, who was all aboard. With school approval, Michael and Chase designed and built a sturdy and comfortable bench of recycled timber and treated pine, and painted it in bright colours chosen by Michael’s daughter, Harper. “What I loved most was working alongside my son on something we were both passionate about,” says Michael. “And the bench is being well used at school – by kids when they need a friend, and also as a central meeting point for playing games.”

2 Apply two coats of semigloss exterior paint with a synthetic brush, leaving to dry after each and sealing the brush in plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out. Tip: Paint all around the outside, and inside to about halfway down.

n If the drainage holes in the planters become covered, position pots with succulents in an outside area protected from rain to prevent them from becoming too wet, and avoid over-watering.

1 Wipe pots with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris. Use a synthetic brush to apply a primer inside and out, leaving to dry. Tip: When choosing a pot combination, this style suits a larger top with tapered base, or two of the same.

3 Position the base pot upside down and use a caulking gun to apply heavy-duty construction adhesive around the centre. Position the top pot, right side up, on the base, pushing it into the adhesive and leaving to dry overnight.

RETRO RAISED PLANTERS

4 Add a 50mm mix of pebbles and horticultural charcoal into base of top pot for drainage. Use a specialty succulent potting mix to plant aloe vera, then top with small, white quartz pebbles to prevent the soil from drying out.

Add height to a potted garden with these cool, mid-century style planters. Mix and match shapes, paint in a striking colour, plant them with hardy succulents and add a sprinkle of bright, white quartz to finish for a resort look.

n Maintain the terrarium by keeping the soil moist but not wet or soggy, watering with a spray bottle. Rotten leaves are a sign of over-watering, so adjust according to the season and available sunlight.

20 bunnings.com.au | bunnings | bunnings photographystepandProjects Jackes.Kylie editingProject Dickins.Natasha

n Always wear gloves and a mask when handling potting mix, and work in a well-ventilated area.

Wash and dry a 5L terrarium vessel, then place a 25mm-deep layer of small quartz pebbles over the base for drainage. Sprinkle charcoalhorticultural over the pebbles to absorb any smell. Cover with peat moss to create a barrier that prevents soil filtering into the pebbles. Use a cup to measure out two parts speciality potting mix, one part peat moss and a half-part perlite into a bowl. Combine and layer the mix in the terrarium to 50mm deep, then use a spray bottle to dampen the soil with water.

Plant terrariumeasy-growingplants,such as small ferns, fittonia, peperomia, syngoniums, pilea and moss. Add decorative rocks and wipe the glass with a dry cloth. Place in indirect sunlight, and water with a spray bottle when soil feels dry. 2 To assemble the top frame, set out the beams in a square with the holes facing up and the pivot bushing beams for the louvres opposite each other as the sides. At the corners, position L connectors inside the frame to secure with hex bolts.

7 Position a control rod either side, with the lips at the top and facing out. To secure the louvres, thread a hex bolt through the beams with the hex key, add a plastic spacer, align the louvre and install a locking nut, firmly hand-tightening it. Tip: Over-tightening prevents louvre movement.

3 To assemble the gazebo, enlist some help with an extra ladder to lift the frame. Position the left- and right-facing posts (labelled D1 and D2) diagonally, lining up the holes to secure the brackets inside the frame, and the braces from underneath, with hex bolts.

5 Position the driving louvre across the frame, with the bracket flush to the cutout in line with the gear box. Insert the gear pivot pin, tightening with the supplied wrench. Set out the common louvres to face the same way, slotting the ends into the cutouts, leaving the centre cutouts free.

8 Install the hand crank into the hook on the beam below the gear box. To seal the gazebo, use a caulking gun to run clear roofing silicone along the top of the gutters and around the top corners, leaving to dry thoroughly.

THRILL

tyling your pots with a creative combination of plants is far more exciting than growing one plant in one pot, plus it brings striking colour and texture to any space. If you’re looking to combine plants together in pots, use the Thrill, Fill & Spill technique!

How to master potted plant styling

First choose a “thrill” plant. It’s the star of the show: a plant that is bold and interesting, with a bit of height. It should be positioned at the back of the pot. Spiky cordylines or strappy leafed plants often make good thrillers.

osmocote.com.au Scotts purpose‘Pour+Feed’Osmocoteall fertiliser, I/N:$19.98/2.5L,0378643 Scottssuperior‘PremiumOsmocotePlus’ potting mix, I/N:$12.77/25L,2962100 Advertising promotion Store products out of reach of children and pets, and always follow the instructions. Wear gloves and a mask when handling potting mix. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Pour a capful of the ready-to-use liquid fertiliser onto moist potting mix around your plants every two weeks and your plants will love you for it.

Complete your potted picture with the perfect “spill” plant. This is a trailing or groundcovering plant that cascades over the edge of the pot, creating a lovely balanced look.

n I like to fill my pots with plants to create an instant wow factor. If the pot starts to look overcrowded, simply prune some of the plants back or pull some out and put them into the garden. Fill any gaps with new plants to create a whole new look.

Horticulturist Melissa King on how to create eye-catching displays with potted plants

To get started, let the perfect pot inspire your planting combination. You can create a coastal oasis with Northcote Pottery Villa Pots in Sand (as seen above) or let terracotta pots shine with a collection of Mediterranean-style plants. Choose a pot that’s around 40-50cm in diameter to allow room for planting. You can also choose a ‘family’ of pots in the same style but in different heights and sizes, allowing you to fill a larger space and really make a statement.

FILL

“Fill” plants are smaller and rounder in shape and help fill out the container beautifully. They are like the supporting cast, providing contrasting form to the taller thriller at the back.

From the elegance of a heritage bungalow to the rough-sawn rusticity of a rural cabin, timber cladding has character in spades. Smooth, painted weatherboards of the type used on Queenslanders and Californian bungalows give a home classic charm, but this old-school material is equally

There’s no one ‘look’ associated with fibre cement – this chameleon material comes in an enormous range of textures and profiles.

Unlike fibre cement, timber does require a significant degree of maintenance. It must be treated with paint, stain or oil to protect the material from the elements, prevent rot and keep it looking its best. This will need to be reapplied regularly – about every 10 years for paint and two to four years for stain or oil, though this will depend on factors like sun exposure and the quality of coating used.

bunnings.com.au | bunnings | bunnings 33

There’s a wealth of cladding options to choose from: timber, fibre cement, brick, stone or metal. The best one for your home will depend on the look you’re after, the maintenance you’re willing to commit to, and the requirements of your site; for example, some materials are better than others if your home is at risk of bushfires – always consider the bushfire attack level (BAL) rating of the product. While cladding options are many and varied, two of the most common, particularly if you’re looking to retrofit, are timber and fibre cement.

However, some timber-based composite systems are more easy-care and boast strong eco credentials. Jason O’Hagan of Weathertex (which is made using 97 per cent hardwood from controlled sources and three per cent natural wax) says, “Our cladding has a better-than-zero carbon footprint.”

Hamptons

As well as taking on the look of timber weatherboards, fibre cement is available in textured panels that give the look and feel of a rendered surface. “While traditional rendered walls are labour intensive, Hardie Fine Texture Cladding comes in convenient panels that slot together and only require a few coats of exterior paint,” says Christian.

Opt for timber or fibre cement weatherboards with sharp shadow lines in white, neutral or dark hues.

Crisp contemporary Choose rendered-look fibre cement panel cladding for a minimalist look.

n Before starting any project, consider all health and safety risks and make sure you get professional advice where needed. Ensure you have the necessary skills, use the correct tools and wear appropriate safety equipment.

Keep in mind...

“Brick walls can be tricky to retrofit with cladding. A structural engineer should ensure the wall is suitable first”

“Most Hardie cladding is painted, so it just needs a wash down with a garden hose once or twice a year to remove dirt. For stubborn grime, use a softbristle brush,” says Christian.

Christian Hansen at James Hardie says the most popular profiles over the last decade have been their ‘Linea’ weatherboards, which are “perfect for Hamptons and modern coastal-style homes”, and ‘Axon’ cladding panels, “large panels that are a modern take on traditional vertical joint timber cladding”. But, he notes, “More recently, there’s been a strong demand for fewer decorative details.”

“Generally, weatherboards can be retrofitted over any type of existing wall, as long as it complies with the National Construction Code,” says Jason O’Hagan. However, cladding cannot be attached directly to brickwork, explains Christian. “Doing this might make it difficult for the house to breathe – and you can’t nail into bricks,” he says. “So if you want to reclad over bricks, you’d have to install a weather barrier and battens over the brickwork. The battens create a cavity between the bricks and the new cladding that lets moisture run down and out the bottom.”

Fibre cement boasts plenty of ‘pros’. Many products are non-combustible (perfect for fire-prone areas), resistant to moisture, rot and termites, and relatively low maintenance.

House exteriors are, of course, complicated by structures such as windows. And as the wall essentially becomes ‘fatter’ by overcladding, Christian explains you have two choices: “Leave the windows flush with the old cladding and veneer and build an external sill to bridge the gap

in this case, old cladding is removed to reveal the existing frame, onto which the new cladding is nailed. If the frame isn’t straight, this can be rectified with battens.

Can I DIY?

Fibre cement is similarly straightforward to install but, Christian cautions, “It can be heavy and installers need the proper PPE and cutting tools as outlined in James Hardie’s best practice guide. For safety and best practice, we recommend you use a qualified carpenter.”

Overcladding a home is a big job, but if you’ve got a solid skill base, it may be a task you can DIY. Composite timber panels are likely the easiest DIY option; they’re lightweight, allowing for single-person installation, and can be cut and installed using standard carpentry tools. With a modern space in mind, Rhiannon realised flat panel cladding was the obvious choice, but Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding offered something extra. “I am obsessed with organic and textural details across all of my designs, and once I received samples of a few different choices so I could tangibly look and feel the product, I was sold,” says Rhiannon. “I love that it’s fire resistant, which is a necessary precaution here in a rural setting, and that it is a soft, warm material,Paintedtoo.”adelicate, muted tone, it sits comfortably in the landscape and reflects the contemporary-classic style for which Rhiannon is known.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

Building for balance

Rhiannon’s home in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges is modern country style – a little rustic, a little luxe – and she wanted a space that would complement the home while embracing a more contemporary aesthetic. Rhiannon is a moodboard master, so she set to work on a vision for the exterior. “It allowed me to mix up finishes and exterior choices like colours and lighting,” she says. Having specified James Hardie products for clients, she knew the range well – the only challenge was deciding which cladding to choose!

electing components for a new or renovated bathroom should be exciting – but may feel daunting. With the almost limitless options of tiles, tapware, colour, cabinetry and more, it can be hard to know where to start. However, a moodboard can help simplify the process.

Interior designer Kelly Donougher (13interiors. com) likes to include one main tile and then a feature tile as a focal point, either across the floor or as a backdrop to the vanity. “Just ensure you keep scale and proportion in mind,” she warns. “The feature tile should be an accent within the space, not something that dominates the room.”

While neutral tones paired with black and timber elements is a classic combination, introducing blue is a wonderful way to inject personality. “My favourite blue at the moment is Dulux Chicory Flower,” says Lynda. “It adds character to your space, whether it’s on vanity cabinetry or a painted feature wall.”

With a bathroom style in mind, the next step is to collect tiles, paint, tapware, handle and benchtop samples. To help inspire your own palette, here are three top styles, with expert design tips on how to pull each look together.

This fresh take on a traditional look blends rustic charm with contemporary clean lines and practicality (see previous page). “It’s favoured in kitchens, but translates well into bathrooms to create a cohesive look throughout the home,” says Luke. Think light natural timbers and stone selections, or monochromatic schemes, all punctuated with a pop of colour or pattern.

For inspiration, browse through magazines and online, suggests Caroma industrial designer Luke Di Michiel. “When you find a bathroom that appeals, ask yourself, ‘What is it that I like? Is it the style, the colours, emotional connection?’ Understanding these responses can hone your preferences and understanding of complementary colours, textures and products,” he says.

According to designer Lynda MacDonald (thedesignchaperone.com.au), making a moodboard is the first step to developing your design scheme. “It creates a visual representation of ideas and can help narrow down the overall look and feel you want.”

Light, bright, airy and relaxed are hallmarks of this style, which conjures feel-good seaside vibes. “Neutral colours like white and beige provide a great foundation for a spacious feel, and beautifully complement oceaninspired pale blues, greens and warmer sandy tones,” says Luke.

The type of basin will influence your choice of tapware, so Luke advises selecting them together. “Also, keep the tapware style and finish consistent across your basin, shower and bath.” He suggests simple rounded forms and subtle metallic finishes like brushed nickel for a casual coastal look.

CUES FROM OTHER SPACES IN THE HOME TO CREATE A COHESIVELOOK

After you’ve decided on key materials and fixtures, contemplate the smaller details. “It’s the finishing touches that can give the coastal look a sense of luxe and ‘holiday at home’ feel,” explains Lynda. “Add privacy with plantation shutters or softly draping linen curtains, layer the benchtop with a marble tray for beauty products and use natural baskets to store fluffy white towels,” she suggests.

“Don’t go overboard and choose too many statementcarefullyusematerials.competingdifferent,Instead, oneortwoconsideredelements”

As neutral bathrooms may look a little plain, Kelly recommends adding wow factor with textural elements. “Travertine is a timeless finish, which adds subtle texture and warmth and feels great underfoot,” she says. “Lightertoned timber in a vanity, shelving or mirror frame can also enliven a white palette.”

Coastal chic

If you want to create an ensuite that channels day-spa serenity, Lynda MacDonald suggests turning to nature for colour and material inspiration. “This look is about evoking a feeling of calm and tranquillity, which many of us experience outdoors,” she says. “Bring the sensory experience inside with tactile timber and stone and soothing gentle green tones.”

Luke Di Michiel’s advice is to not be afraid of using darker colours and textures. “This helps create a calm, relaxing backdrop and pairs well with brass and gold-accent tapware,” he says. “Complement the look with fluid, organic shapes.” These could be softly curved basins in a matt finish or a sculptural, freestanding bath teamed with a timber stool.

“Green tones can work with light or dark timbers, greys, browns or neutral tones. It’s a complementary colour in so many schemes”

While this style is often associated with pared-back minimalism, it’s also about creating a sense of escapism and indulgence. “Gone are the days of the boring white laminate cabinet. Now it’s about individuality,” says interior designer Kelly Donougher. “Consider vanity designs with fluted doors, slatted woodgrain, curved benchtops, oversized handles and comforting elements like plants and candles, which all make it feel like a room where you can truly unwind.” Duratile ‘Terrazzo Classic’ 60cm x 60cm porcelain floor/wall tile, $29.16/carton of 3, I/N: 0271126 (swatch shown). Uplift your bathroom with stylish accessories

Attach the mounting plate onto the wall by removing the sticker backing and pressing firmly onto the tile. It’s a good idea to hold your accessory onto the wall to check the height and position beforehand. This will help you avoid obstacles (such as taps) and ensure there is enough clearance space around (such as for your towel to hang).

Fill behind the mounting plate with the adhesive by inserting the tip through the larger hole and gently squeezing. Allow to dry for 12 hours.

FOR THIS CUSTOMISED KITCHEN RENO, STYLE, FUNCTIONALITY AND NOSTALGIA ALL PLAYED ROLES

his 1950s beach house in Victoria holds a special place in the hearts of renovation experts Lucy Glade-Wright and Jonno Rodd of Hunting for George (huntingforgeorge.com), having been in Jonno’s family for 50 years. But its kitchen was outdated and cluttered, with inaccessible appliances, inadequate storage and an impractical layout.

“The renovation was all about updating the home to accommodate and futureproof for a growing family,” says Lucy. Key to making it work was creating a kitchen like no other with customised cabinetry, lighting, statement zones and a mix of old and new.

In planning a major storage upgrade to suit their needs, the pair also wanted to retain the kitchen’s beachy retro vibe, along with its L-shaped layout. They opted for customised flush floor-to-ceiling cupboards and drawer systems for one side of the kitchen, along with an appliance upgrade and increased bench space for food preparation.

“Open shelving creates easy access to everyday items and room for styling,” says renovation expert Lucy Glade-Wright

Deciding on the final options was all about gathering samples. “Have them in front of you to play around with and create a few selections,” she advises those wrestling with such choices. “I grabbed Kaboodle Kitchen samples in store as well as brackets, handles, timber, stone and other elements in order to finalise my design choices. It’s important to consider the entire space as a whole before making any big decisions.” (See page 41 for more tips on choosing finishes).

If you don’t have a roller for winding back your solar pool cover, never leave it folded in the sun when it’s not in use – this can damage its insulating structure.

Now that the cleaning is done, next to tick off the list are the other two Cs: chemistry and circulation – especially if your pool is looking greener than it should.

Clear the clutter

“Ensuring water chemistry is balanced by purchasing a quality water-testing kit and learning how to use it is a wise investment for pool owners,” explains Edmond. “However, a professional check should always be considered for those unsure.” 

It has pickthatandnon-invasivescentedbeautiful,flowers,rootslargeleavesareeasytooutofthepool.

First, trim any vegetation that’s too close to the pool. Remove dirt, moss and algae that may

Soften your surrounds with a lush backdrop of greenery. Plants with large, leathery leaves will be most chlorinetolerant. Before buying, check local authority regulations for proximity of plants to pool fences.

Leaves, twigs, bugs and even birds all help keep you on your toes when maintaining pool cleanliness. And if your pool is looking more green than clean, it’s both unsightly and unhealthy. Edmond Yip at Bestway Australia says algae and sludgy surfaces harbour bacteria that can cause skin infections and make you sick if swallowed – and can also be bad for the pool’s structure. “Keeping the surface of a portable pool clean means any potential nicks or scratches can be identified and attended to,” explains Edmond. “A clean pool now means less money spent later.”

Check chemistry and circulation

These maintenancelow- plants offer a huge variety in form and colour, but avoid those with thorns or spikes.

For an above-ground pool, maintenance, cleaning and storage are usually all that are needed, explains Edmond Yip. “This includes using the correct chemicals, changing the filter cartridge regularly, cleaning the inside surface, particularly before the first use of the season, using a correctly fitted pool cover and, if its size allows, dismantling/storing your pool when not in use,” he says.

“As well as having a compliant pool fence and gate, you should ensure children are always well supervised in and around your pool area”

Finally, tackle the water circulation thoroughly. Nathan Hallahan from Hy-Clor explains the pump is the most important part of this system. “Check there are no leaks (through the O-rings) and that the pump is not making rattling or humming noises,” he says. “Also make sure your pump skimmer is emptied of leaves and debris, and that the return jets are pushing water around the whole pool, as this avoids ‘dead spots’ where algae will tend to form.” Keep a regular check on this system throughout summer, particularly if you have an in-ground pool, but it may be wise to call in the professionals for a pre-summer service.

A clean pool is important, but keeping it safe is a legal requirement. Adam Rassam from Protector Aluminium (manufacturers and suppliers of pool fencing and hardware) says pool fencing should be checked at least twice yearly. “This is to ensure that children and pets living at or visiting your home are safe and protected from drowning,” he says.

n All pools must conform to your local authority’s safety regulations and guidelines.

Remember that water chemistry can be affected by rain and storms, so check levels afterwards. And as the weather warms up and pool use increases, your water needs more frequent testing – along with more chlorine and chemicals to maintain balance. Always follow recommended wait times before swimming after using pool chemicals.

5 Lastly, to give your pool that extra sparkle, we recommend adding a pool clarifier. A clarifier helps bind small particles together, allowing them to be captured in your filter. Available in liquid and tablet form, Hy-Clor Water Clarifier is a go-to product for many pool owners.

3 Your pool’s chlorine demand will fluctuate as a result of the weather and bather loads. For example, more swimmers in your pool means more demand on your sanitiser to kill germs and bacteria brought in. During the peak swimming season, it is recommended to Super-Shock your pool every couple of weeks to raise your free chlorine levels so that they sit between 1–3ppm (parts per million).

4 Long hot summers can open your pool to stubborn algae blooms. Tackle it fast and help prevent it returning with a high-strength algaecide, such as Hy-Clor’s Super Algaecide. This formula is suitable for both chlorine and salt pools, and the good news is it won’t cloud your water.

2 Once the water is balanced, you will need to sanitise your pool. Chlorine is the most commonly used sanitiser and is available in the form of tablets, granular powder, liquid or chlorine gas (produced by a salt-water chlorinator). Hy-Clor’s 3-in-1 Granular Chlorine Concentrate is a popular choice, as it has an inbuilt stabiliser that helps protect it from the sun’s UV rays, extending the life of the free chlorine.

Step

For details on the free Hy-Clor app, visit hyclor.com.au/mobile-app 3 Step 4 Step

1 The first step is to ensure your pool water is balanced, which will help your pool sanitiser to work more effectively and also reduce the overall maintenance required. Pool water balance has four basic components – total alkalinity, pH, calcium hardness and stabiliser – and you need to keep within their required levels. As a guide, your pool’s pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6, and AquaChek’s Free Chlorine Test Strips will guide you. The majority of pools in Australia will need the pH lowered, which can be done by using Hy-Clor pH Decreaser (Dry Acid).

Smart home devices make using less energy easier. A smart home system such as Grid Connect allows your smartphone to control lighting, heating, cooling, entertainment and security remotely. So you can switch these on or off, even when not at home. As the Arlec team explains, “Smart home platforms also have ‘scenesetting’ capabilities, allowing you to

LED lighting is one of the best energyefficiency innovations of recent years: LEDs use up to 75 per cent less energy than traditional halogen bulbs and last between five and 10 times as long*. They come in a variety of colours for practical applications such as to repel insects, or create a kaleidoscope to pretty up a party space. Most new outdoor lighting purchases will come with LED bulbs but, if you have old security, garage or shed lights, update them with new fittings that use LEDs.

“A smart watering timer enables live water tracking and anywhere”decisiontheyousmartphone, optionsschedulingfromyoursocanmakebestwateringfrom

Swimming pools and spas are great fun but can be pricey to run; pool pumps in particular can be hefty power users. Energy rating labels, applicable to new pumps from October 1 this year, can help you choose the most efficient pump They’repossible.graded from one to 10 stars, and include an (seegoodclean,keeprecommendedminimumaRuntypicalcanhoursexpressedconsumptionenergyfigureinkilowattperyearsoyoucalculatetherunningcost.thepumpontimerforthetimetoyourpoolandpractisemaintenancefrompage52)to help keep it running optimally.

Outdoor blinds that block the sun from hitting windows can help lower the inside temperature significantly, so cooling devices don’t have to work as hard or for as long. Link motorised blinds to your smart hub and set them to open or close depending on when the sun hits those windows. Remote operation means you can control your blinds from afar, useful when the weather changes unexpectedly.

Watering your garden can cost both energy and water, especially if you rely on a pump. Fitting a smart watering timer lets you ‘set and forget’ your watering schedule, operate it remotely with your smartphone and monitor water usage. Add a rain sensor and your set-up will water only when required. Georgia Liversage at Holman suggests connecting a smart tap timer to a moisture sensor or weather station through the Holman Home app. “This means that when it rains, your smart tap timer will not run on its scheduled time, based on data collected from the moisture sensor/weather station,” she says.

Don’t over light your outdoor areas with hardwired fittings. Keep them for essentials such as security and safety along paths and steps; have task lighting installed for things like cooking on the barbecue.

CAN IT BE USED IN THE VEGIE PATCH?

5 OCP Slasher organic weedkiller concentrate, $324/20L, I/N:

Yes. OCP Slasher Organic Weedkiller can be sprayed on weeds in your vegie patch.

OCP Slasher Organic Weedkiller will control a broad range of annual and perennial weeds in garden beds, vegie patches, pathways and when spot spraying in lawns. It’s non-selective so be sure to only spray the weeds to avoid harming your lawn or garden plants.

No. OCP Slasher Organic Weedkiller is free from glyphosate.

OCP Slasher Organic Weedkiller is approved for use in organic gardens and farms by Australian Certified Organic (ACO). It breaks down quickly in the soil and has no lasting residues. It’s also friendly for bees and other beneficial insects once the spray has dried on the weeds. Likewise, pets are fine to return to sprayed areas once they’ve dried.

powerful oscillating models may use more energy than a ceiling fan, meaning they can end up costing slightly more to run. Bunnings electrical buyer John Campbell says the size of the space is the most important issue when buying a portable fan. “Choose small personal fans for a study, 40cm pedestal fans for a lounge room and large, 75cm industrial fans for a garage or gym,” he explains.

It pays to know the plan for the new kitchen before demolishing the old one, especially if you intend to save by designing it around the existing utilities. Monique Parker of Kaboodle

Kitchen recommends, “When pulling out your old kitchen it’s a good idea to keep plumbing and electrical in the same spot – this will be more convenient and will save you money.”

Monique suggests keeping timber benches or doors in good condition for reuse as open shelving. “Undamaged cabinetry can also be repurposed for storage in other areas of the house.” But, she says, “Avoid reusing cabinets with any damage, especially water damage.”

hether you’re DIY installing a new kitchen or having it done, dismantling the old one yourself can save big bucks when renovating. Plus, reuse and repurpose where possible to send your old kitchen onto its next life with a clearer conscience. Here’s how to get the most out of a kitchen demo.

If you intend to keep the flooring, “Consider designing the new kitchen so cabinets cover the same surface area as the originals,” she says. “Rather than totally demolishing, uninstall it piece by piece to limit the damage.”

Out with the old

Ask neighbours and friends if they would like your cabinetry or materials. Many councils have a waste and recycling facility where you can take material to separate into sections for recycling, from concrete and building materials to electronic waste, lighting and globes, white

Unwanted

Before lifting that sledge hammer, plan out how to dispose of the original kitchen. If it is in good condition, selling is a great option. Try placing an ad on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. Rebekah Allison, a spokesperson for Gumtree, says, “You can find whole or parts of kitchens on Gumtree, along with different appliances. For those renovating, you should definitely consider selling or buying benchtops and cabinets to help save some extra cash.” Fridges, freezers, coffee machines, dishwashers and ovens also feature in the top 10 most listed items.

the nails, then sand and paint before reinstalling. The aim is to avoid sending as much of the old kitchen as possible to landfill while creating a blank canvas for the new one

To sell online, write accurate descriptions of the components with measurements. List the best features, highlighting near-new or on-trend items, and include plenty of images.

Working with reuse centres and local tip shops helps keep building materials out of landfill. Kirsten Junor, from creative reuse centre Reverse Garbage NSW, says the key to donating a deconstructed kitchen is to consider all items. “A sink can be reused for play in an early childhood centre or at a community garden, and handles can be repurposed for furniture or even making costumes,” she says. She suggests keeping relevant items together. “Bundle up drawer slides with the runners and put the screws in a labelled bag. Indicate the age on older materials, such as skirting boards, which is helpful for knowing if the paint contains lead, and always take out the nails.”

Router Bits

Compact and versatile, a jigsaw can swiftly cut through timber, plywood, melamine and other materials. Its narrow blade tackles curves and complicated shapes, but it’s great for straight lines, too. A base plate can also be tilted to make bevelled cuts. Pendulum action, a feature of many jigsaws, makes the end of the blade tip back and forth as well as going up and down, resulting in a more aggressive cutting action. However, for the neatest cuts – or when working with brittle materials such as acrylic – it’s best to keep pendulum action off. Why you need it: Amazing at cutting curves in sheet materials.

3 Angle grinder

This powerful piece of kit is quite an unsung hero when it comes to DIY tasks around the home. While it’s well known for cutting and grinding metal and masonry – for example, when you need to trim a steel bracket for an awkward custom fit – its high revs make it brilliant for a variety of other applications. With a stripping disc attached, it can aggressively remove moss or paint, while a diamond multi blade is suitable for tackling everything from masonry, stainless steel and reinforced concrete to timber with nails in it. For safety, always disconnect the power plug or remove the battery before changing the wheel on an angle grinder. Why you need it: Slices through metal like butter.

iscover how simple and fun it can be to assemble furniture, perform basic home maintenance or put together carpentry projects when you harness the power of these seven essential DIY tools. You won’t just be avoiding blisters from sawing piles of timber by hand or hacking away at old grout – these workshop helpers will give you the ability to tackle more ambitious tasks than ever before.

“With a quality set of drill and driver bits, you’ll be able to take on builds like a champion!”

Andrew Murray at Ozito says, “A twospeed gearbox allows more control, as the first gear gives you a slower RPM [revolutions per minute] and delivers more torque [rotational force] as you drive screws. The second gear has higher RPM, allowing you to drill holes in harder materials like steel.”

Invaluable for both creating holes and driving screws, a cordless drill is a tool you’ll wonder how you lived without.

DO IT ESSENTIAL TOOLKIT

It can cut through timber, plastic and metal, saw out grout from between tiles, flush-cut the ends off dowels and make short work of detail sanding into the tiniest of spaces. No wonder this relatively new addition to the world of DIY is known as a multifunction tool. Usually sold with a basic array of blades and attachments, a multifunction tool’s magic lies in the high-speed side-to-side motion of its accessory head. The easily interchangeable attachments can be mounted at various angles, increasing the tool’s adaptability and allowing you to work in confined areas. Why you need it: Breezes through seemingly impossible plunge cuts.

BATTERY OR MAINS POWERED?

When the cutting edge starts getting dull and sawing more slowly, upgrade the performance of your saw by choosing a high-quality replacement blade. Justin Goode at Irwin says, “More teeth on the blade will give you a finer finish, while less teeth cut more quickly and result in a rougher finish.” Why you need it: Effortlessly powers through long, straight cuts, even in thick pieces of timber. 6 Sander

n When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for set-up and use.

Keep in mind…

In most cases, Andrew Murray recommends going cordless as a starting point when buying power tools. “It takes away some of the safety factors surrounding 240V electricity and the occasional issues of having a cord trailing behind you,” he advises. “Once you have a battery and charger pack, there’s a whole range of bare tools (sold as ‘skin only’) that you can use with the same battery platform.”

A cordless version is extra convenient for in-situ work, such as sanding down the edge of a sticking door without removing its hinges. Use a mini brush wheel for cleaning rust from hand tools and other objects with notches and crevices that are tricky to navigate. Why you need it: Restores lawnmower blades to razor-sharp.

sharpening knives or engraving the kids’ sports gear, the first thing you’ll reach for will be your rotary tool.

7 Circular saw

There is one exception, though. “There are some benefits to using a mainspowered jigsaw, as there’s often more torque and strokes per minute (SPM) delivered from the motor,” he explains.

This high-torque must-have tackles long, repeated cuts in materials from thick timber to plywood and metal – with the right blade. The base plate can be tilted for bevelled cuts, and raised or lowered for exact cut depths.

The type of power sander you choose will depend on what you’re most likely to use it for. If you often do small-scale work with lots of corners and crevices, a palm sander with a triangle shaped pad will be your best option. For larger surfaces, such as sanding doors or furniture prior to painting, a random orbital sander will be your go-to ally. The sanding disc won’t get into tight corners, but you don’t need to double up on sanders – most multifunction tools (see 4 and above) come with triangular pads for detail sanding. Why you need it: The ultimate lifesaver for upcycling and paint prep.

“The number of teeth on the circular saw blade helps produce the right quality of cut, depending on your application”

Justin Goode, Irwin

Keep in mind…

Three hinged doors on the front and a lid supported by gas struts allow easy access

n Pre-drill all screw holes using a 5mm bit for 14G batten screws, 3mm bit for 8G and supplied hinge screws, and 2.5mm for the cabin hook screws.

3 Position the side panels on the end frames, flush with the front. Position two infills each at the top and base, clamping to pre-drill with an 8G countersinking bit, securing with 50mm decking screws. Cover the rest of each end frame with vertical panels, countersinking between the slats, securing with decking screws.

2 Set a circular saw blade to 20mm deep, cutting the panel stiles using a rafter square as a straight edge. Cut three doors of 26 slats, two side panels of 27 slats, and four with seven slats to position vertically. Tip: Raise the saw guard to position the saw before each cut and wait for the blade to stop before removing it.

8 Attach the lid to the top rail, with hinges eight slats in from the ends and at the centre. On the doors, position a hinge five slats from either end, using it as a template to pre-drill with a 3mm bit, securing with the supplied screws. Tip: Use spacers to hold the doors off the ground, while pre-drilling and screwing into the frame.

5 To make the lid, trim a panel offcut to nine slats long, positioning it upside-down, end-to-end with a full panel. Position the 2120mm lid supports inside the stiles and to reinforce the join, securing into the slats with 20mm button screws. Secure infills to the ends with 30mm screws.

4 Set out the frames using the spacers. At the back, position a 2140mm rail along the inside base, securing with batten screws. Secure the other 2140mm rail through the centre, and the 2180mm rail along the top, in line with the vertical panels. Attach the 2180mm support rail along the back, securing with 30mm screws.

6 To cover the frame behind the top rail, cut four panel offcuts of five slats long, trimming the slats of one to be 360mm long. Set them out along the support rail with the end cover pieces, securing with decking screws.

7 Sand over the screws with 120-grit abrasive paper, apply exterior filler, leave to dry, then sand the excess. Apply oil-based primer all over, painting the stiles between the slats with an angled brush. Finish with a mini roller, dragging it along the gaps between the slats. Apply two coats of exterior paint, leaving to dry after each coat.

6 Enlist a second pair of hands to help move the bookcase into position, then reinstall the shelves and add your own styling touches.

1 Working in a well-ventilated area, set out a drop sheet then place the bookcase on it, checking it’s steady and there is room to paint around it. Take out the shelves and pins if they’re removable.

n When using a power sander, be sure to wear a mask and eye and ear protection. Always sand and paint in a well-ventilated area.

Keep in mind…

2 Use a palm sander with a 120-grit abrasive disc to lightly sand all over, removing bumps and scratches while creating a key for the primer to adhere. Wipe all over with a damp cloth to remove dust.

4 Apply two coats of the feature colour, cutting in with a brush and finishing larger areas with a clean mini roller, leaving to dry thoroughly after each coat. Tip: We used Taubmans water-based semi gloss neutral enamel tinted to Curry Sauce.

3 Apply primer, cutting along the panel grooves and into the corners with an angled brush, finishing larger areas with a mini roller, then leave to dry. Tip: If the original finish is still visible, apply a second coat, then wash out the brush.
