Cutting logs yourself can be cost-efficient and, when used properly, a chainsaw can do the job quickly. Echo shares these tips: n Always read the owner’s manual for instructions and safety information. n Put on gloves, eye/ear protection and suitable footwear before using the saw. n While cutting, always have the saw running at maximum RPM and use both

How to upgrade your front entrance First impressions count for a lot. Take your front door from drab to fab with British Paints Paint&Prime. An undercoat and topcoat in one, you only have to do half the work. Step 1: Colour

Bright, bold colours can li neutral exteriors such as bricks or concrete renders. British Paints Paint&Prime can be tinted to lots of colours – take your pick from strong and striking, or so and chic. Some of our favourites include; Mystery Island which will bring a lush tropical vibe to your entrance; Fizzy Pink for a fun playful feel, and Pacific Lagoon for a sophisticated look. If you’re aer a soer look, Satin Wrap or Tiger White are seriously chic.

Step 2: Sheen

British Paints Paint&Prime Doors, Windows and Trim, comes in two sheen options; gloss and semigloss. Semi-gloss works well if your exterior walls are a low sheen, and gloss creates a classic look that’s very easy to clean.

Step 3: Prepare

British Paints Paint&Prime Doors, Windows and Trim is a water-based enamel that’s suitable for use over water or oil-based topcoats. There’s no need for an undercoat because Paint&Prime is designed to do two jobs in one, giving perfect coverage, and saving you time.

Step 4: Paint

Now for the fun part! Use a brush to ‘cut in’ and paint around the areas a roller can’t reach with British Paints Paint&Prime Doors, Windows and Trim. Then, use a roller over the rest of the door. Because of its easy-to-use thick formula, you only need to apply two coats on surfaces of similar colours. Quick to apply, with a beautiful finish, you’ll save time with Paint&Prime.

Tiger White

Satin Wrap

Top tip! Paint&Prime is also available in interior and ceiling formulations . For more information and advice on the Paint&Prime range, visit britishpaints.co @BritishPaintsAustralia @britishpaints

During Mapping it out

To make sure their DIY workload was manageable, Chelsea and James broke up the reno into smaller tasks. “We tried to do it so that we could use parts of the kitchen for as long as possible to make it easier,” says Chelsea. The process took around

11 months, beginning with alterations to the floor plan. The couple blocked off a door to the carport and a side window to allow for a fridge recess. “Then it seemed very closed in to have the island bench go all the way to the wall, so that’s when we decided to cut that off,” explains Chelsea. That next step delivered the stylish central island, and a more welcoming and open space. To fix the lack of storage, the couple turned a second walkway through to their front sitting room into a pantry.

Light the way

Chelsea and James wanted a way to delineate the cooking zone, which they have done by adding a drop ceiling. By raising a section between the island and the backbench and adding LED strip lights, they’ve also created the illusion of a skylight. Above the island, they opted for simple downlights over pendants. “We put a large pendant over our dining table, just to the left of the kitchen – we didn’t want to have things hanging everywhere,” explains Chelsea. bunnings |

“We had finished the splashback area before we started the floor, so we went into Bunnings and took a couple of the samples to find a floor tile to match,” explains Chelsea, who chose a tile in a rectangle shape. “That was the nicest tile because it had some light colours, whites and light greys going through it and that would help tie in the floor tile and obviously the gloss whites.” They used the same tile along the pantry wall. “We wanted to keep it all matching but we didn’t want to have a full tile in the scullery, so we cut them in half.”

Power moves

Cupboard love

For the new cabinetry, Chelsea opted for Kaboodle Kitchen’s Modern profile design in Egg White. “We decided on the Kaboodle Kitchen range because we could put it all together ourselves, saving us on labour costs,” she says. Floor space in the new pantry was limited, so fitting it out required a little creativity. “Because we didn’t have much depth to play with, we actually used wall cupboards and just put them on the floor!”

ABOVE When storage is on display, limiting materials to just a few – such as timber and glass – keeps the look neat

Tile style

Light, bright and neutral was the colour palette the couple had in mind, and between the glossy cabinetry and the pale tiles on the splashback, oven stack and island, they’ve nailed it.

There’s a lot to love about the new kitchen the pair have created, but for Chelsea there’s a standout feature. “We put a power point on each end of the island bench with two power points and two USB sockets,” she says. “So, if you want to charge your phone, you can just plug it in on the end of the island, or if you want to use a sandwich toaster or a food processor that’s stored in the cupboard, it’s easy to find power.”

Walls ready for a refresh? A pro-level job starts with a perfectly prepped surface

T

he secret to a quality paint job is in the prep. Okay, it’s not the most glamorous part of the task, but it’s one step you won’t want to skip. The work you put in beforehand will deliver you a finish to be proud of and, with help from Selleys, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. GET CLEANING Start by washing your walls. Selleys Sugar Soap cuts through grease and grime (if only all cleaning was so easy!). Put down a drop cloth to protect your precious floors and pull on some rubber gloves. Remove any nails or hooks from the wall, then use sandpaper to sand over any rough or flaky bits. Dilute some Sugar Soap in a bucket with water (as per packet instructions) and use a cloth to wash off any dirt, dust and scuff marks. Done!

2. TACKLE DINGS Don’t let dents and nail holes ruin your paint job. With a ready-to-use filler like Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Selleys Spakfilla Rapid, covering over the cracks is an easy job for any DIYer. Simply apply a small amount of Spakfilla Rapid to the included scraper and draw it across the hole or dent. Skim over the area in both directions a few times to push out air bubbles, then firmly draw down the surface, leaving a small amount of overfill. Allow to dry, as per pack instructions, then lightly sand smooth and brush off the dust.

3. FILL THE GAPS The last thing your beautifully painted walls need is a gappy border around every architrave, window or door frame. Selleys No More Gaps Multipurpose makes filling gaps so much easier, thanks to the easy-squeeze tube, and it’s great for getting into those awkward corners. Make sure you’re starting with a clean, dry surface – give it a wipe before you start. Cut the tip of the tube at a 45-degree angle and gently squeeze it into the gap. Use a wet

finger to smooth over the top and clean up any excess with a damp cloth. Give it at least 20 minutes to dry before painting over it with water-based paint, or allow 24-48 hours if using ceiling or oil-based paints. Now for the fun part: brushing colour on your beautifully prepped walls!

W

hether you’re designing a dream kitchen from scratch or remodelling an outdated one, the key to achieving the perfect space for your style and budget is ticking off the non-negotiable inclusions. These 10 must-have features cover beauty and brains – or form and function, as designers put it – for a kitchen you’ll love to look at and live in. 

Optimal layout

Consider your lifestyle and the way you use a kitchen to determine functionality that works for you, suggests Cameron Gray of Kaboodle Kitchen. “An optimal kitchen layout has everything readily accessible. The kitchen ‘work triangle’ concept – based on the three main work areas of the sink, refrigerator and cooktop – is a start but it’s not a hard, fast rule,“ he says. “The three work areas should be near enough to each other to allow for efficient meal preparation, but also not feel restrictive. Marking up a floor plan and plotting in cabinetry and appliances with masking tape on the floor allows you to walk around the space, and feel what your kitchen is going to be like.”

“People want profiles that are less ‘busy’ to the eye, not just on the benchtop but on door fronts, too” Cameron Gray, Kaboodle Kitchen

2

Ace the appliances

Start with big-ticket items such as the oven, cooktop, rangehood, fridge and dishwasher to determine the budget left for cabinetry, benchtops, walls, floor and lighting. When choosing an oven, Tane Poulson of Monaco Corp (Everdure and Blanco) says there are three key considerations: function, size and maintenance. “Do you cook the basics or more adventurous recipes? This will dictate what type of cooking 28 bunnings.co.nz |

bunningsnz |

functions you require,” says Tane. Then factor in how many people you cook for. “Is it just the family or do you like to entertain often? This will direct you to the size you need,” he says. Also think about how you plan to clean the oven. “Some models have pyrolytic cleaning,” explains Tane. “This function heats the cavity to upwards of 400+ degrees, turning all residue to ash.” Correct installation is essential for this type to allow extra heat to escape.

3

The right profile

Cabinetry fronts set the tone of the kitchen. Choose a look that lends workability to your design, and decide if you want it to complement the era and style of your home or deliver a contrast. Shaker-style cabinet profiles are a perennial favourite and work well in almost any home. Modern flat-front cabinets are also popular, fitting with the trend towards uncluttered and minimalist spaces.

4

Storage ideas

Save space and gain better access to the things you need by using internal storage devices, such as pull-out baskets. Problem areas, like corner cabinets, can be solved with rotating systems. “Drawers are a great accessibility solution – you don’t have to get on your hands and knees to get to the back of the cupboard,” says Cameron. “The general rule now is, install as many drawers as possible.” Plus, if you’ve got the height, use it! Maximise vertical space with overhead cupboards or, in a compact zone, open shelves for a less closed-in feel.

5

Best benchtops

“You want a benchtop space that has a good run so you’ve got a decent amount of space to work with,” says Cameron. “Also consider the benchtop landing space next to appliances.” Opt for the best quality material you can afford and be practical; if you’re on a tight budget, bear in mind that timber and easy-care laminate can be fitted DIY, but surfaces like engineered stone will need to be installed by professionals. Find more information at the Special Orders Desk.

6

Illuminate

Consider lighting in the early stages. Ambient, task and accent lighting all should be in a kitchen plan, zoned for separate duties. It needs to be functional – particularly in food prep areas – and to create distinct atmospheres. Safety is paramount, especially when dealing with sharp knives and hot pots. A mix of downlights and pendants will illuminate work spaces, as well as allowing you to adjust the ambience.

7

Nail the flooring

ABOVE As well as providing light, pendants can help to define zones, such as the dining area of this kitchen

Tiles are affordable, easy to clean and available in a vast array of colours, patterns and finishes. Natural stone, such as marble, slate, granite and travertine, brings a luxury look, but requires more care than ceramic tiles. Engineered timber flooring lends warmth and is more forgiving under foot. For the look of stone or wood, vinyl is budget-friendly, hard-wearing and water-resistant.

For tapware, the key thing to think about, says Luke Di Michiel of Caroma, is how the kitchen is used. “If you enjoy cooking, tapware with a pull-out or pull-down retractable hose system is great for quick clean-ups and practical for big, deep sinks,” he says.

“Additional features can provide streams for different tasks, such as a gentle mist for washing vegetables to stronger water flow for removing cooked-on spaghetti from pans.” For the finish, Luke suggests looking to your appliances or door hardware; “Consider how the tapware fits with the rest of your kitchen. Be conscious of the metallic finishes, making sure they’re speaking the same language.”

5 4 6

9

Be sink savvy

Maximise benchtop space by choosing an undermount sink. “They give a clean look and are practical,” says Luke. “Printing out the size of your sink on paper is a great way to visualise how it will sit. There’s nothing worse than losing too much benchtop because you’ve underestimated the size of your sink, or choosing a sink too small for your needs.”

White kitchens won’t date, but a bold finish might bring you more joy. “We’re seeing a trend towards woodgrain and timber-look cabinets paired with white, forest green or light-blue cabinetry,” says Monique Parker of Kaboodle Kitchen. “Blacks and black woodgrains work well in larger spaces with natural light, whereas softer tones tend to work better in more confined settings to help open up the space.” For impact without going too bold, look at the splashback; this can be equal parts functional and feature, especially in a small space. Slab splashbacks are a clean, modern look, while tiles come in myriad sizes, colours, patterns and finishes, including irregular texture for an artisanal feel.

KNOW YOUR FIXTURE OPTIONS TO GET THE PERFECT PAIRING OF BASIN AND TAPWARE Words CAROLINE BOTTING

BATHROOM BASICS

I

f you’re planning a new bathroom, make the basin and its taps your style starting point. They’re the pieces you’ll use most, so they’ll need to work well and look good. Consider how you want your finished bathroom to look and feel, says Andy Grigor of Methven. “How will they fit in with the rest of your home?” he asks. Next, think about the practicalities. Caroma’s Luke Di Michiel says details such as the tapware height, location and distance in relation to the basin and benchtop are important. “This will deliver the best bathroom experience,” he explains.

Photography Caroma, (opposite) Methven. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

The best basin

Pick your basin first, as it will determine the choice of taps. “Be sure to consider the basin height when selecting basin mixers,” says Luke. “Tall basins may require tower mixers to provide additional height.” Wall-mounted Great for smaller spaces or powder rooms where storage is less important, these have no vanity attached and are hung directly on the wall. Some come with an optional half or full-height pedestal to conceal plumbing pipes. Tapware can be wall- or hobmounted (fixed to the basin). Inset, recessed, under-counter All sit within the vanity to different degrees – partly, with some of the basin or just the rim showing, or completely below the surface. Taps can be wall- or hob-mounted. Above-counter/vessel These sit on the vanity surface like a dish, with taps mounted on the wall or vanity top. Check the height of your tapware when you choose a vessel sink – the spout needs to easily clear the rim, but shouldn’t be so tall it will splash.

ABOVE Caroma ‘Jade’ WELS 5-star 6L/min basin mixer in Black, $179, I/N 0134596 (suitable for all pressures). All other products, stylist’s own. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

A top-rated tap

Choose between a basin mixer or a three-piece set of a hot and cold tap with spout. “Both types can be installed either directly onto the basin or partially concealed in the wall cavity in a wall-mounted installation,”

“The tap needs to complement the basin – do you need a taller tap or wall-mounted version, or is the basin designed for a tap to be included?” Andy Grigor, Methven

says Luke. “Basin mixers are generally easiest to install and update, whereas wall basin mixers can provide a more visually clean look.” For hob-mounted tapware, ensure you pick a sink with the right number of tap holes. It’s possible to find twin pillar taps, one for hot water and one for cold, but mixers and sets are more common and have a broader range. Check the WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) rating, which marks water flow with a star system. The more stars, the more water-efficient the tap. bunnings |

Clear everything out

The first step in any project should be to understand the space you have to work with, says Andrew Derer of Pinnacle Hardware. “Measure all useable areas such as floor space and wall heights – this will ensure you not only maximise your storage capabilities, but also that you have a safe and workable space around your storage solution,” he says. Next, declutter. “Sort and conquer,” says Jessica Haslem of Rack It. Clear out and sort items into groups by use. “For example, power tools, gardening accessories, paint products, sports equipment, beach/pool toys, suitcases, etc,” she says. Everything unwanted must go! “Get rid of anything that is broken, or hasn’t been used in 10 years,” says Jessica. Say goodbye to bottles of garden supplies with a few teaspoons of liquid left, or tins of paint from years ago. They are probably well past their best and should be disposed of responsibly. By the end of this exercise, you’ll have an idea of exactly what you have on hand and what storage is needed. “For example, shelving units combined with storage tubs for general purpose storage, lockable cabinets for valuables or belongings to keep out of reach of children or animals, or somewhere to store tools with a workspace,” says Andrew.

Use elbow grease

Now the garage is empty, scrub it! Sweep out dirt and debris, and wipe down any windows. Try to remove old oil stains with a pressure washer or a stiff broom and soapy suds. If you want to go the extra mile, consider giving it a coat or two of paint.

A bright white paint job can transform a dingy interior. Use a specialist concrete flooring paint like White Knight ‘Ultra Pave’

First in, first served

When it’s time to return grouped items, consider how often they’re put into use. “Store most-used items, such as tools and gardening accessories, to the front, and less used items, such as suitcases or paint, out of the way. This will prevent you having to sort through and find items every time you need them, leading to mess,” says Jessica.

Storage zones

Look at all areas of the garage that can be used for storage – walls and ceilings included – and explore the huge range of sturdy hooks, racks

QUICK TIPS

Tools Use vertical wall storage systems for large and oddshaped tools, and a locked cabinet for valuable ones. Paints Sit tins on a flat surface on heavy-duty shelving that can carry the weight, out of reach of children and pets. Chemicals Keep these in

a locked cabinet safely away from children and pets.

Toys Favourites should be

kept in an easy-to-reach area. Seasonal toys are best kept in the roof/ceiling space.

Sports equipment Vertical systems are great for skis, racquets and skateboards! Keep frequently used items at eye level and lower for kids. Bicycles Select from one of

and shelving systems now available. Walls are often under-utilised space in most garages, but can be made to work harder with vertical wall storage systems, perfect for stashing tall, thin items such as rakes and shovels. For rarely used items, like Christmas decorations or camping gear, a roof/ ceiling-mounted storage system that sits above vehicles is a clever solution. Make sure you select shelving units able to withstand a decent amount of weight – they’ll need to hold paint tins, tools and even spare tiles. Keep items that need full protection from damp – such as clothing – in heavyduty storage crates that will keep out water, dirt and insects.

Good lighting

Well-organised spaces need decent illumination. If your garage lighting is limited, consult a licensed electrician for an upgrade. LED batten lighting is a good choice, throwing out a lot of light, and can be hung on the ceiling and placed above cabinets, work areas and shelving. LED globes don’t have a filament, so are less prone to damage if knocked or bumped. Work lights with clamps, along with wired-in task lighting, are another option for workbench areas.

S

pring is often when we ramp up maintenance around the house, yet crisp, sunny autumn days are also made for rolling up the sleeves and delving into some satisfying deep cleaning. Here’s a list of jobs to revive your home inside and out before hunkering down for winter.

bunnings |

bunningsnz | bunnings.co.nz 41

1

Washers, dryers and drains are in constant use, so regular cleaning is essential to prevent grime build-up

Bedding

Strip your bed and wash the lot. “Most pillows and duvets can be placed in the washing machine, but ensure you read the care instructions first,” says Adriana Aziz of Maid For You. If your machine isn’t big enough for the job, head to a self-service laundry. “Wash duvets and pillows on the longest cycle with cold water and a gentle detergent. Follow with an extra spin cycle or two before hanging out to dry,” says Adriana. For memory foam pillows and bed toppers, which can’t be machine washed, Adriana suggests a spot clean with a damp cloth, followed by a vacuum with an upholstery attachment.

2

Dryer, washer Drains

Soft furnishings

Take rugs and runners outside for a shake, address any stains with a spot cleaner and leave to air in the sun for the day. For professional results, hire a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner to give carpets and upholstered furniture a deep, revitalising steam clean.

3

Drains

Kitchen, bathroom and laundry drains are often forgotten until there’s an issue, but an annual or biannual flush out is a good habit to get into. Try a drain-unblocking liquid or pellets to remove odours and improve flow, or use an unblocking tool to blast away build-up. “A cup of vinegar tipped down the sink regularly will also help eliminate any odours and break down deposits,” says Richard Champion of Totally HouseProud.

4

Give laundry workhorses some TLC. “Empty the lint filter to improve the dryer’s efficiency and use a mild dish soap and microfibre cloth to clean the inside of the drum,” says Adriana. To combat mould and bacteria build-up in the washing machine seal, Adriana suggests wiping the drum with white vinegar before running a drum clean or hot water cycle with a bit of detergent.

“Decluttering is a great way to clean bedrooms. It’s an amazing feeling to get rid of stuff you no longer use” Adriana Aziz, Maid For You 42 bunnings.co.nz |

5

Aircon units

Before cleaning air conditioners, refer to the instruction manual and turn the power off at the wall. Adriana suggests wiping the outside of the interior unit with a cloth, then cleaning the filter with a vacuum or soft brush. If louvres can be removed, vacuum or wipe them. Brush dust and debris from around the exterior unit.

Aircon filters are designed to catch dust and need to be kept clean to maintain good air quality

Rangehood filters

6

Fridge and freezer

Grease traps

Banish kitchen grease. Start by removing rangehood filter covers and give them a spray with a degreasing cleaner, followed by a run in the dishwasher on a heavy duty setting. Match your cooktop surface with the right cleaning product (stainless steel or ceramic) and a microfibre cloth to gently wipe away cooking stains. Give oven racks a soak in a sink of hot soapy water and spritz inside the oven with a targeted product. Use a scraper to carefully remove debris baked onto the oven door.

7

Being food central, the kitchen is one room you want to keep fresh and sparkling

Fridge and freezer

It’s the perfect time to take stock of your chilled and frozen contents. Empty the lot onto the kitchen bench and sort through it systematically. Give the fridge and freezer a thorough wipe out including the vegetable drawers. Richard also recommends giving seals

a clean with a diluted mixture of bleach or vinegar. You could use an old toothbrush to get into the crevices. Before returning food items, check best-before dates, look for freezer burn on meat and consider ways to streamline storage. If decanting items or batch freezing, maximise space with square stackable containers.

Exterior surfaces

Set aside a weekend to give your outdoor walls, pavers and driveway a thorough clean with a water blaster. If there’s a large build-up of grime or mould, spray the area with a suitable detergent product and follow with the water blaster. Wash down softer surfaces like timber decking with warm soapy water, a soft bristle broom and a hose; if using a water blaster, start on a low setting with a fan tip and use a sweeping motion to evenly disperse the water.

Windows

Cleaning windows can be a big job, but the right equipment and a good technique makes the process much quicker. Start by cleaning out window and door tracks using a track brush, and vacuum the loosened debris. To clean the glass, Richard Champion recommends applying a solution of 50ml of dishwashing detergent mixed in a half bucket of hot water, prior to washing, and squeegeeing off. “Finish with a light spray of streak-free window cleaner, polish with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and have a safety blade at the ready to remove bugs or stubborn paint drips,” he adds. 44 bunnings.co.nz |

W Pavers make for a fantastic, hard-wearing patio base that can last for decades

hether it’s a space for entertaining on balmy nights or a solo retreat, a well-designed patio is the ultimate addition to your garden. It can be attached to the house or separate, and can be a great way to exploit a sunny spot or a patch with a view. We’re sharing a few pointers.

… or far?

Locating the patio away from the house creates a destination zone within your garden, and can make an underused area work harder. Consider light (do you want a sun trap or a shady retreat?) and how the space will be used – say, as a private corner, entertaining space or teen hangout. An overhead pergola structure is practical and makes a statement. Fire pits are also a popular inclusion, enticing people deeper into the 48 bunnings.co.nz |

There are many options for patio floors. A poured concrete slab is a functional choice for level areas. Bricks are easy care and recycled ones give a rustic look. Natural stone flags, like granite or limestone, look amazing but can be pricey and need maintenance. Pavers are relatively simple to install yourself, and can replicate more expensive stone. Ceramic tiles usually need to be professionally laid over a concrete slab, but are simple to

Near…

Interior designer James Treble says the obvious place for a patio is off an open-plan living/dining space, if the house allows. “Many new homes come with a standard alfresco offering,” he says. “But it’s common to extend the slab out to the sides where you can, and to the rear, so it’s outside of the roofline. It just gives you more space.” A patio off the living/dining areas gives easy access to the kitchen, and if an outdoor kitchen is part of the plan, positioning the patio next to the house makes sense, says landscape architect Meredith Gleeson of Outdoor Establishments. “You can connect to utilities and create an extension of the entertaining area from within a home, making a versatile ‘indoor/outdoor’ space,” she says.

maintain. Both the appearance and the useability of the patio will be influenced by its flooring material. In a sunny area, paler pavers may be cooler underfoot than darker ones, but can be glary in very bright light. For homes on bearers and joists, or where you have different levels or uneven ground, a raised timber deck could be the answer. “It’s great for summer as it doesn’t make the space hot and you can hose it,” says James.

Surround sensation

Any patio – but particularly one set away from the house – will benefit from screening to give a sense of privacy. If your patio is in a corner of the garden, you’re halfway there – soften the wall or fence with greenery, such as fast-growing lilly pilly; camellias, which give a hit of colour through to winter; or the fragrant wonder of star jasmine (trachelospermum jasminoides). A fixed pergola will define the area and can be ‘walled’ with decorative screening and/or roofed with climbing

“Matching tiles in an alfresco space to those on the main floors helps to keep the same flow running from inside to outside”

Larger style stepping pads create a path to an outdoor area while making a style statement RIGHT Mimosa ‘Mandala’ 4 piece teak lounge setting, $2,498, I/N: 0184642†. plants, such as jasmine, for shade. A row of trough planters or large pots with tall shrubs is a simple screening fix, while a shade sail overhead will help keep you cooler in summer.

Style it up

Loose pebbles deliver a casual look underfoot

The furniture should suit the patio’s function. A casual daytime retreat might need just a hammock or daybed and a shade umbrella, while a full-on entertaining space will likely call for a lounge or dining setting, plus outdoor lighting and even heating, if you intend to use the area year-round.

ABOVE Streamline the look of a compact patio with furniture in similar materials and colours

If you include an outdoor kitchen, you’ll need to add task lighting; for a conversation zone, keep lighting low, warm and ambient. For instant magic, James loves festoon lights. Hang around nearby trees or across the frame of a pergola to cast a cosy glow on the patio.  bunnings |

A

productive vegetable garden doesn’t have to end when summer does. There are many crops that can be planted in early autumn for a late autumn or winter harvest. “The lingering warmth of the season makes it a great time to start cool season crops like brassicas, leeks, lettuces, peas, carrots, spinach, silverbeet, radishes, swedes and turnips,” says Waiuku gardener and Gardena ambassador Sarah O’Neil (sarahthegardener.co.nz). “But make sure you are growing cool season varieties for the best outcome.”

Fast producers

The secret to success is, first and foremost, choosing plants that can endure the cold. Brassicas, for example, generally have broad leaves that efficiently collect solar energy during winter. Not only can these hardy vegetables withstand cooler temperatures – and light frosts – most are fast germinators, which is

important for this time of year. While the soil is still warm, they can be sown directly into the bed, or sown in seed trays for transplanting when 8-10cm high. “Pay attention to keeping the soil moist, as seed trays dry out quickly, and protect brassica seedlings from the cabbage white butterfly, which will still be out and about,” says Sarah. Garden author and community gardening ambassador Rachel Vogan (thehappygardener.co.nz) advises choosing your cool-season varieties based on what you’ll cook over winter. “My go-to autumn and winter veges are based around stews, soups and slaws. withstand most New Zealand winter conditions. Or grow ‘cut and come again’ salad greens in a sunny spot indoors, or in a sheltered position on a patio or deck.”

Flavour freeze

Certain vegetables actually taste better after a winter frost, as the freeze converts starches into sugars. These chill-loving veges include brussels sprouts, parsnips, savoy cabbage, kale, turnips and swedes. For those vegetables that don’t like frosts (including some leafy lettuces, cucurbits such as cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins, tomatoes, capsicums and beans), pay close attention to harvesting dates. The days may still be warm, but temperatures may drop considerably overnight and cause damage. “Keep an eye on the weather forecast so late season harvests can be done before the first frost,” recommends Sarah.

Restore order

With a little care, warm season grasses can be encouraged to thicken and spread into sparse areas. Aerating and dethatching will reduce soil compaction and allow air, water and nutrients to filter through to the roots, says horticulturist Melissa King of Scotts Lawn Builder. “This means a deeper, tougher root system and a stronger, more vigorous lawn,” she says. “Regularly feeding with a slow-release lawn fertiliser will promote lush, thick growth that smothers out unwanted weeds and patches.” If it’s been a long time since any lawn maintenance, apply a soil wetter to help water penetrate the soil.

Patch it up

Sometimes the lawn is beyond fixing with fertiliser and you’ll need to reseed or returf, depending on the type of grass in the lawn. Seed is ideal for both small and large areas. It’s cost effective and a small box can cover quite a bit of ground. You will need patience, though, as it can take up to 12 weeks to grow lawn from seed. If you’re looking for instant results, turf is your best option.

To the untrained eye, all lawns may look the same, but there are several different types, and what you have will determine how to care for it. Warm season grasses, like couch and kikuyu, run and spread via horizontal stems (or stolons). While they can look similar, couch has fine leaves while kikuyu has slightly broader leaves. Cool season grasses, such as fescue, browntop and ryegrass, do spread (but not as much) and grow mostly as upright bunches of finely textured blades. They’re tolerant of shade and grow best in cool regions. While it’s possible to grow them in warmer areas, they need additional care during spring and summer. 58 bunnings.co.nz |

Feeding grass regularly with slow-release fertiliser helps to keep it green and lush

Seedy matters

Whether you’re seeding an entire area or repairing a few patches, choosing the right seed for your lawn is key. Some warm season grasses, like couch and kikuyu, are sold in seed form as a pure or blended mix. Most cool season grass seeds are sold as a mixed blend. Pure seeds are ideal when you want to perfectly match the existing lawn. It’ll be uniform in colour, texture and growth habit. However, these come at a premium, which can be costly if you’re sowing large areas. At a lower price point, you can find couch and kikuyu blended with a cool season grass, like ryegrass. Here, the ryegrass

germinates first and acts as a kind of nurse crop, preventing weeds from growing while the couch or kikuyu germinates. Once the warm season grass establishes, it will eventually become the dominant grass type. To sow a new area or repair bare patches, the process is the same. Remove any weeds and dead plant material, including existing lawn roots. Fill any holes or shallow pockets with topsoil and rake to level. “Prepare the area using a top-quality lawn top dressing and scatter the seeds over the soil,” Melissa explains. “Coverage depends on the seed variety or blend, so read the back of the pack

Turf law

When repairing lawns with turf, you’ll need to prepare the area well before the turf arrives as it needs to be laid as soon as possible. “Remove any dead grass and roots, improve the soil with organic matter and rake it over to create a smooth, level base for your new turf,” says Melissa King. If you need to fix patches in different areas, use secateurs or a sharp spade to cut the turf to size. “Lay the turf down over the affected areas and top dress the edges to help it settle in,” she says. Water regularly

The mow down

When lawn seed has reached 5-6cm, make the first mow, but only cut off the top 2cm. This will help promote growth and prevent issues with moisture stress. Similarly, wait until turf is 6cm tall and well rooted before the first mow. Then, follow a few basic rules when mowing. “Mow regularly and only trim up to one-third of the length of the grass,” says Helena Gray of Ryobi. “This will result in healthier grass that looks more green and lush over time.” Check blades regularly, and sharpen or replace them every six months. “Dull or blunt blades will rip and tear the grass, which results in a less than perfect lawn,” explains Helena.

SANDPAPER IS A MUST-HAVE ADDITION TO THE DIY TOOLKIT, HANDY FOR A WIDE RANGE OF JOBS Words GUN ARVIDSSEN

T

Grade expectations

The numbers on the back of the sandpaper refer to the paper’s grit rating. “The grit number is the number of holes per square inch in the sieve that sorts the abrasive material. The smaller the number, the larger or coarser the grain,” says Steven Hutchinson of Flexovit. For jobs such as shaping timber and removing paint, which involve sanding away large volumes of material, opt for the coarsest grits of 40 and 60. For general sanding jobs, 80-grit is reasonably rough while still giving you plenty of control and not gouging or scratching the surface. By the time you get to 120-grit, you’re moving into ‘fine grit’ territory, with 180-grit giving you a satiny finish on timber, as well as being great for a smooth-down after the first coat of paint on a timber workpiece. Although the details will vary depending on what you’re using it for, you generally start with a coarse-grit paper such as 60 or 80 and then progress through 120-grit and finally 180- or 240-grit for a smooth-as-silk result. surface of the timber can lift as they absorb the primer or first coat, creating a bristly surface. Giving your workpiece a quick once-over with 180-grit paper eliminates the bristling, while also ‘cutting’ the surface of the paint so that the topcoat can bind to it more effectively.

1 paint dust that would clog ‘standard’ sandpaper intended for timber. Wet-and-dry paper won’t fall apart when saturated and is often sold in extremely fine grit ratings of up to 800 and beyond. “Wet-and-dry paper, which has a distinctive black appearance, can be used with a lubricant – usually water,” says Steven. “Typically made with silicon carbide grain, it is used to resurface or restore metal surfaces. The water assists by reducing clogging of the abrasive, helping achieve a high-gloss finish.”

Shape up

Ever wondered why sandpaper comes in such a bewildering variety of pre-cut shapes, rolls and sheets? Rolls of sandpaper are best used with a sanding block. Folding the paper back and forth ‘breaks’ it, allowing it to be easily torn. Sheets in the standard size of 280mm x 230mm can be divided into thirds or halves and clipped onto orbital sanders. Some are available in extremely fine grades and can be used for hand-sanding to a perfect finish. Discs usually come with perforations for dust extraction, to suit random orbital sanders. They are attached to the sander’s pad with hook-and-loop backing. Triangles and finger pads are pre-cut to suit standard shapes of detail sanders, for getting right into those tight spots. Rectangles with holes are designed for 1/3-sheet and 1/2-sheet sanders.

into corners and other tight spaces. “When upcycling furniture using a detail sander, it’s always better to take the job slowly,” says Jason Salmon of Ryobi. “You don’t need too much downward force on the sander; let the tool and the paper do the work for you.” 1/3- or 1/2-sheet sander Uses precut sheets clipped to its base or secured using hook-and-loop fastening, and oscillates rapidly to power through sanding jobs. Random orbital sander “It uses an orbital action, while at the same time oscillating in a random pattern. This results in a highly

effective sanding, from fine to very coarse stock,” says Jason. Belt sander Removes more material than other sanders, using a belt tensioned between rollers. To change the belt, first disconnect the power or battery. “Release the belt tensioning lever to slide out the old belt and slide in the new, aligning the arrows on the inside of the belt with those on the sander,” says Jason. “Push the lever back and power up the tool. Holding it upside down, use the tracking dial to make fine adjustments so the belt tracks the centre of the base plate.”

An instant luxe look

Elevate walls and objects with the lustrous aura of gold. “Specialty effects paints like Dulux Duramax are perfect for decorative surfaces, shelving, wall hooks, furniture and accessories,” says Brittney Gardiner of Dulux. “Mask off with a good-quality masking tape, and then mix your paint by giving the spray can a good shake.” To use spray paint, wear a mask and gloves, apply it in a well-ventilated space and use drop sheets to catch any overspray. Gold paint can also be brushed on in enamel form, and a more muted metallic finish can be brushed or rolled onto an entire feature wall. Specialised wall paints are also available in steel effect, tintable metallic and pearl sheen.

Pave it forward

Need a safer non-slip surface outdoors, or a luxe look for a paved patio? Choose a lowsheen paving paint that improves substrate friction and makes a style statement. Today’s solvent-based options, such as Berger Jet Dry, are ready for recoat in two hours, and can be tinted to match steel fencing or roofing. Before painting concrete, you will need to give it a thorough clean and, if water beads on it once it’s dry, scrub with an etching agent. Rinse off and check the concrete is fully clean with masking tape – if there is debris left on the tape when you peel it off, repeat the process. Kitchen and bathroom blitz

Transform tired-looking wet rooms with paint designed for tiling, benchtops and cabinets, like the Dulux Renovation range. To prepare the surfaces, remove all silicone, thoroughly clean using sugar soap, then apply specialised primer. Plan your schedule carefully because the primer must dry for eight hours. Mix the additive into the paint – which can be tinted to a range of colours – then apply it using the same size brushes and rollers as for the primer. For steel garden features and furniture, try a hammered-effect metal paint such as RustOleum Universal forged hammered. It only takes one step to apply this dimpled coating to unprimed steel. Just use a wire brush and sandpaper to get rid of any flaking rust first. You can also upcycle metal objects by coating them in cold gal, like White Knight’s Rust Guard cold gal product. This is a heavyduty, zinc-rich coating that bonds to ferrous metals and prevents them from corroding, and can be painted over or simply left as is.

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMERS

Seasonal stars Make your autumn garden a blaze of colour with these flowering faves to plant now

Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’

This reliable succulent has clusters of small flowers atop fleshy green leaves from early autumn. They start as cream, open to pale pink and finish a coppery-red. It thrives in full sun – especially hot, dry spots – and well-drained soil, and copes with drought once established.

Tibouchina

Depending on the variety, this evergreen has masses of purple, pink or white flowers and ranges from a compact 60cm shrub to a 10m tall tree. Position in a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil. It does require frost-free conditions so, in cold zones, grow a smaller variety in a pot and move it to a protected area.

Nemesia

A fast-growing flowering annual (or short-lived perennial), with fragrant blooms in yellow, red, pink, purple or orange. Give it a position in full sun to part shade. Liquid feed regularly with a high-potassium fertiliser and remove spent blooms to help promote more flowers.

This prolific flowering perennial blooms in a rainbow of cheerful hues. Plant in the garden in full sun – avoiding clay or sandy soils and harsh winds – or in a pot in a bright spot indoors. It grows best in cool to temperate climates but can also cope in mild subtropical areas. FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.co.nz/plants
