CHIC SHAPES

Editor’s letter

Sleek curves are a top trend in interiors, exteriors and furniture right now. These soft, flowing lines can also filter through to smaller elements, such as fixtures and fittings. Here are our top picks.

Welcome!

L

ike many of you, I have a thing about storage. So it’s no surprise I’m particularly inspired by two stories in this issue. In “25 steps to storage heaven” (from page 27), we show how to bring order to your home – even in those tricky spaces (under the stairs, anyone?) – all in the most stylish way possible. The garage can also be a mess magnet, but we’ve got it sorted, too, with clever ideas and solutions. We Chic storage solutions for every room, from page 27

1 completely transformed Katy’s garage from a pile of sporting equipment and old furniture to an organised ‘room’ with everything she now needs in easy reach, including a gym space (from page 52). We’ve also done the hard work for you for this Father’s Day, which is just around the corner on September 4. Turn to page 13 for more than 100 gift ideas, and here’s to all the dads and father figures in our lives.

AFL vs DIY

Footy stars are once again taking up the DIY challenge with the return of Bunnings Weekend Warriors. Produced in collaboration with the AFL, season 2 of this series features AFL and AFLW players giving DIY projects a crack and having fun along the way. Some thrived, others scraped through – but they all got there in the end! To view the series, visit bunnings. com.au/weekend-warriors or scan the QR code.

FURTHER SAFETY IMPROVEMENT FOR AUSSIE OUTDOOR BBQs & HEATERS

Over the next few months and into the future this new valve will become more common amongst the SWAP’n’GO collection cages and the old valve will eventually be phased out.

SWAP‘n’GO has been powering outdoor Aussie BBQs and Heaters for generations

Appliances with the traditional POL fitting will still continue to screw into the new cylinder valve ANTI-CLOCKWISE.

To help improve safety a minor change to the connection valve is underway and over the next few months the old valve will be phased out. The new valve will not affect your BBQ or Heater.

From late 2021 LPG appliances will start to adopt a new hose fitting that is purpose built to function with the new valve design. Importantly, appliances with this new hose fitting will only be able to connect to the cylinder valve being screwed on CLOCK-WISE.

Make an entrance

Here’s a great indoor DIY – build a terrarium! Use a decorative glass bowl and layer with 1 gravel, horticultural charcoal, sphagnum moss and potting mix. Plant up with a variety of miniature, slowgrowing terrarium starter plants. Prevent 2 leaf curl in peach and nectarine trees by spraying with a copper-based fungicide before the buds burst.

To get a head start on tomatoes, sow punnets 3 indoors and place them on a brightly lit windowsill. Seedlings will be ready for planting by the time the soil warms up.

Prepare your garden beds for spring by spreading slowrelease organic fertiliser or pelletised manures over the soil. Dress with compost 5 and dig in well.

Have you sprayed for bindii (jo-jo) yet? Now’s the time to rid your lawn of that ferny foliage, well before the prickly burrs 4 appear. Look for a selective herbicide suitable for your type of grass.

1 Urban Wild 140mm terrarium glass bottle with hole and cork, I/N: 0209586 (plants and potting mix sold separately). 2 Yates liquid copper fungicide concentrate, $20.53/200ml, I/N: 3010236. 3 Mr Fothergill’s ‘Tomato Red Cherry’ windowsill greenhouse kit, $9.25, I/N: 2962014. 4 Scotts Lawn Builder ‘Bindii’ weedkiller, $26.99/2.8L, I/N: 0046015. 5 Garden Basics organic compost, $7.48/25L, I/N: 0274306. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Giving your front door a quick refresh might be just the mini-makeover your house needs. Modernise with a smart doorbell and lock, switch out the door pull, replace that tired old entry light and you have a whole new way to welcome visitors.* Brilliant ‘Darwen’ exterior wall light with textured glass in Black, $52.84, I/N: 0186161 (globe sold separately)

BEETROOT

Plant this versatile veg in pots or garden beds, in full sun or part shade. Leaves and roots can be eaten.

CARROT

Keep soil moist while carrot seeds are germinating, and remove rocks or hard soil clumps to prevent forking.

RADISH

Sow seeds in full sun every few weeks for a continuous crop. Radishes are ready to harvest in 6-8 weeks.

For more on what to do in the garden during August, go to bunnings.com.au/ gardencorner After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, always read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals and products out of reach of children and pets.

Burn dry, sustainably forested timber. Choose hardwood and don’t burn driftwood, wood that has been painted, pressure-treated or stained, plywood or particle board, as it can release toxins into the air. Check with your local council if and when there are fire bans in your area or if you need a licence to light an open fire. W

hen every item has its place and your home storage is sorted, it’s easy to find what you need without fuss. Here’s how to make the most of the space you have.

Bedr oom 1

Lighten up

A clear-out before you even think about storage options will make your task so much easier. One cupboard at a time, decide what you really need or value, then donate, discard or sell the rest. As stylist Samantha Pointon says, “You may have less stuff than you think!”

2

Swap for the season

Shorts and lightweight shirts won’t get much use in colder months and can be packed away for warmer weather. Space-saving vacuum bags are ideal for hiding unseasonal items in harder-to-reach spaces. “Clothes rails are great for storing pieces you reach for all the time,” says Samantha.

3

Plan the right fit

Before you head in store to choose storage pieces, measure your shelves and drawers to make sure you buy the perfect size.

Keep like with like

Fold sturdier-fabric items like jeans or trousers into a neat pile or shelf insert. Softer garments like sports gear, T-shirts or leggings can be kept, rolled-edge up, in a basket or tray.

5

Control the small stuff

Socks are notorious for wandering all over the wardrobe, if not the whole house! Corral small items like these in soft baskets that are easy to pull out for instant access.

“Start small. Even if you sort out one cupboard a weekend, that’s okay. It doesn’t need to be all done in a day” Samantha Pointon, stylist 28 bunnings.com.au |

Hide it away

As anyone who’s ever stepped on a Lego block in the dark can attest, tidying up toys is a daily task. Make it easy for little hands to help by using low storage that hides clutter. This roll-out drawer is a simple weekend project and can be varnished, stained or painted. 

CREATE A SHOE TIDY

To add this nifty shoe rack, have MDF cut to size in store. Paint, then attach hooks with button head screws. Tip: make it a door by installing fixed pin butt hinges and a magnetic cabinet catch.

8

Use tricky spaces

Hallway

7

Display treasures

Don’t be afraid to add personality to your space by keeping some special items out on show. Choose just a few objects you’re sentimental about – a beloved record, a treasure from your travels – then let them shine. You can always switch these around, too, for a seasonal, or even monthly, style refresh. 30 bunnings.com.au |

9

“Take advantage of under your stairs,” advises Samantha Pointon. “You’d be surprised how much you can fit under there when it’s all organised.”

Colour it in

“There are great storage options available to match every colour palette,” says Samantha. “It’s also nice to have pops of contrast as well.”

10

Make an entrance

Place a well-chosen rack inside the front door to hang bags, scarves and hats. Add a stylish tray for items such as keys and sunglasses.

bunnings

ABOVE Flexi Storage ‘Living’ entryway storage unit in Black and Bamboo, $45, I/N: 0351405. Boxsweden 23cm x 15cm x 7cm bamboo storage tray, $4.40, I/N: 0285530. All other products, stylist’s own.

Keep in mind... Ensure all standing storage items are permanently anchored to the wall or another suitable surface, with fixings suitable for that type of wall, to avoid them toppling and causing serious injury. n Seek professional advice if you are unsure about what fixing hardware to use, and regularly check fixings are secure. n Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional. n

12 Stack by size

A good rule is to start with the smaller pieces in the centre shelves and then work out from there with bigger products. Bulky but light items such as pillows and doonas can be placed up high, and weightier objects on the lower shelves.

13

Think vertically

Maximise empty space in your shelves or cupboards with stacking inserts that provide an extra shelf.

14

Add greenery

Break up the highly functional pieces with bursts of beauty in the form of potted plants. This essential styling detail softens the look of practical zones, while also purifying the air!

15

Flexi Storage ‘Living’ stackable 3 tier shoe rack, $29, I/N: 0351406. Dieffenbachia plant in Lotus Collection ‘Linear’ 23.5cm x 23cm ceramic pot in Navy, $24.98, I/N: 0258713 (plant sold separately). Inabox 19L modular storage container in Cactus Blue, $13, I/N: 0319496. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

Shoes your battles

You can fight it, but boots are likely to get abandoned at the front or back door. Give them a place to live in a stylish rack.

16

Record progress

Snap before and after pics of your chaos-controlling efforts to maintain motivation – and refresh your memory when mess reappears!

Have some things handy

“Make food prep easier by keeping your most-used things, like spices, on display for easy access,” says Samantha Pointon. “Identical spice containers look best, especially if you can see the contents.”

18

19

Divide and conquer

Kitchen drawers come in various sizes, so calculate your space carefully before buying drawer inserts (must-haves for an ordered kitchen.) Adjustable or trim-to-fit ones are also great options. 32 bunnings.com.au |

Adapt and innovate

20

Look for handy pieces that do double duty. Here, a shoe rack is reinvented as a storage bench that houses lidded and unlidded modular containers – in on-trend colours – to keep office paperwork out of sight, but still in reach.

Create a calming workspace at home with well-chosen decor. Choose storage with lids to hide clutter and update office furniture to stylish pieces that help your space look less work and more luxe.

Bring the outside in

Adding a touch of nature can bring vibrancy to your interior space. Think natural textures and some greenery. Botanical wallpaper or a framed print can also do the trick!

24

Love your labels

Labelling containers helps you – and anyone else –instantly find what you need and put it back in its correct place. Attaching uniform labels to mismatched containers helps create visual cohesion.

Hug the corners

Keep mess at bay in your home office by using all the space available. Nudge files right up to the wall, utilise a pinboard for daily reminders and keep office supplies in trays for easy moveability. Add corner shelves to help fill what was otherwise dead space above the bench. This is valuable real estate, so maximise its potential.

rowing a garden is good for the soul, but how can we make sure it’s good for the planet, too? A few small changes can mean working better with nature to create an eco-friendly outdoor space that reduces our environmental impact, minimising waste and encouraging local wildlife.

Hardy Australian natives can thrive in sun-drenched areas. “Choose plants suited to the different microclimates of your garden,” says landscape architect Gavin Hardy

Right plant and place

Aim to grow plants suitable for the local climate. Many Australian natives or plants that originate from similar environments, like the Mediterranean, have adapted to growing in harsh, often dry conditions, so reduce the need for extra water and maintenance. Their position in the garden is also important, according to landscape architect Gavin Hardy (gavinhardydesigns. com): “Wattles and native grasses are ideal for hot, exposed areas, while native 38 bunnings.com.au |

violets and ferns are best in cool, damp and shady spots.”

From mains to rains

Make the most of every drop by having a rainwater tank installed. It lessens the need to rely on mains water and helps decrease stormwater run-off. If you’re collecting wastewater (greywater) from baths, showers and washing machines, treat it with a product like Yates Greywater Fertiliser to kill unwanted microbes and neutralise the effect of detergents, before using on non-edible plants only. bunnings

Go organic

Horticulturist Steve Falcioni at EcoOrganic Garden says that when pests and diseases need treating, “It’s important to reach for effective products that will fix the problem – without creating other issues.” Many products can harm beneficial insects like bees, so look for treatments that are designed to be friendly to them, such as the Eco-Organic Garden range. But organic doesn’t mean you should be complacent – always follow the label instructions, wear protective gear if necessary and keep products in a secure spot. For weed control, glyphosate-free options, like Slasher Organic Weedkiller, are effective and leave no lasting residue in the soil.

Growing edible plants is incredibly rewarding, says Steve: “It allows you to harvest food at its freshest with zero food miles.” If you haven’t got much space or you’re new to growing food, he suggests starting small with herbs and leafy greens. Rocket, spinach, lettuce, spring onion and parsley can all be grown in pots and are easy plants for beginners.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Composting is a hugely useful way to reduce waste. Garden clippings (but bin any that are diseased), most fallen leaves and end-of-season crops can all be transformed into a nutrient-rich soil conditioner. “Kitchen scraps can also be composted, as well as non-glossy paper, egg cartons and cardboard,” says Gavin. “Worm farming is another great practice.” Revamping old pots, benches or sculptures with a new coat of paint can inject life back into items that could otherwise end up in landfill.

Keep in mind... Always wear a mask and gloves when handling compost, mulch or potting mix. n If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, read the label, follow the instructions carefully and wear suitable protective equipment. n Store all gardening products out of the reach of children and pets. n

The birds and the bees

Beneficial insects and birds are really looking for the same things: food, shelter and water, says Steve Falcioni. “Plant a mix of flowering plants to supply them with pollen or nectar,” he says. “Include various-sized plants – small, medium and large – as this will also provide physical shelter for them to rest.” A water source can be in the form of a birdbath. “Be sure to include a few sticks or stones around the edges so beneficial insects can access water easily without drowning,” he adds.

Best of barbecues

When choosing the size of your barbecue, use the number of people you regularly cook for to help determine the quantity of burners you’ll need, advises Mark West, outdoor living category manager for Bunnings. “For a family of up to four people, a two- or three-burner barbie will do the job, whereas a four-burner can cater for larger groups and give you the option of cooking bigger cuts of meat,” he says. “When factoring in size, also consider where you plan to use it and allow for generous ventilation and clearance from flammable materials.”

Features & accessories: Glass

viewing windows allow you to see how food is cooking. Side burners can handle stir-fries, shelves are always useful and a rotisserie kit will turn your barbie into a roasting oven (great for keeping heat out of the kitchen in summer). Grilling baskets let you easily flip whole fish, toasties and burgers.

Best for cooking: Meat, fish, kebabs, vegetables, burgers, fried eggs, roasts.

Gas & charcoal

Nick Graham, Char-Griller

Char-Griller 46cm side fire box charcoal barbecue in Black, $129, I/N: 3170924

Fuel type: Take your pick from gas,

charcoal or electric models and weigh up how each compares in terms of costs, convenience and your preferred cooking style. Gas and electric barbecues are fast to get to the desired temperature, notes Nick Graham at Char-Griller. “This gives you the peace of mind of a quick and easy start-up,” he says. “These barbecues require either access to an outdoor power outlet, plumbed natural gas or smaller LPG bottles.” Similarly to gas barbecues, charcoal ones can also be portable, but are fuelled with lumpwood or briquettes. “While they take longer to heat and tend to produce more smoke, many love the delicious smoky flavour they produce,” says Nick. Some larger models offer the best of both gas and charcoal, such as the Char-Griller Double Play.

“When you cook using charcoal, you’ll get that memorable f lavour every time”

Skill level: Beginner right up to expert. “You can stick with typical barbecue fare or utilise accessories and techniques to expand your barbecue’s capabilities,” says Mark.

Sm oker se lection

“A smoker works through indirect heat, where the fuel source is placed away from the food so it cooks low and slow,” explains Nick Graham. Shop for models with excellent insulation to retain heat, such as the CharGriller Akorn Kamado, which has triple-walled insulation around the steel firebowl. “This will help increase your fuel efficiency and create less variability in the temperature as you cook,” adds Nick. Also ensure damper vents are easily accessible to help control temperature and smoke. Position the smoker in a well-ventilated area and consider your neighbours.

Fuel type: Standard smokers use charcoal

briquettes, lumpwood or pellets, which come in flavours such as oak and hickory. “The fuel you use depends on the model as well as personal preference and often takes a little trialling, to see what suits your cooking style,” says Nick.

Features & accessories: To get the

smoker going, Nick advises using a chimney starter: “Ignite the fuel with firelighters at the bottom of the charcoal chimney starter, wait around 15 minutes and you’re away.” For extra smoky flavour, place wood chunks over the fire or insert a steel smoking tube filled with flavoured chips onto your grill plate. “While almost all barbecues come with an external thermometer, a meat thermometer will help determine the exact temperature inside your meat to help take the guesswork out of cooking times,” adds Nick.

Best for cooking: Large cuts of meat cooked low and slow – think beef brisket, ribs, pork shoulder or belly and leg of lamb. Skill level: Intermediate. “Requires some practice to perfect cooking times and temperature control, but the results are worth it,” says Mark West. “Many owners become enthusiasts.” 

bunnings.com.au |

Keep in mind...

Follow manufacturer’s instructions for setting up and using your barbecue. n Position your barbecue on a flat and clear, wellventilated space outdoors, never leave unattended when lit and have a hose or fire extinguisher nearby. n Before using a gas barbecue, check the gas hose – do not use if it is crushed, kinked or cracked – and also that your LPG cylinder is in date. n Do not burn wood that has been chemically treated (painted, stained or treated with preservative) and do not burn garbage or plastic. n Check with your local fire service about using barbecues during fire bans. n Keep children and pets away from barbecues and gas cylinders and put matches and lighters out of children’s reach. n

Piz za perfection

Aside from their charming dome shape, one major benefit of pizza ovens is the high temperatures they can reach to achieve a wonderfully crisp base in a matter of minutes. They make a great centrepiece for outdoor entertaining, and removing a perfectly cooked pizza will make you feel like a professional chef!

Fuel type: Traditional woodfired models are

the most popular and the flavour they produce is hard to beat. “These require good quality hardwood fuel cut into small, manageable pieces,” says Mark West. “Alternatively, gas pizza ovens may be preferable if you’re after convenience and have a smaller outdoor area.”

Best for cooking: Homemade pizzas can cook in as little as two to three minutes, depending on the oven. Can also be used for roasting and for baking bread. Skill level: Beginner to expert. “A tip is to move the pizza around to prevent the side closest to the coals from burning,” says Mark. “Also be aware that when you open the door, the temperature will fall dramatically.” As ever, take care around fire and be mindful of heat and hot coals when opening the door.

Hardworking choice

Aside from making a design statement, mosaics tick the practical box in a big way. Interior designer Mariana Tedim (@lifestyleby_mari) recently renovated, using KitKat-style mosaic tiles in her kitchen (see left) and laundry. “They’re very easy to clean and resistant to heat and splashes and spills, which makes them perfect for a kitchen splashback,” says Mariana. Mosaic tiles are also ideal for kitchen and bathroom floors. “Flooring is a great way to use mosaic tiles. They can endure a hefty amount of wear and tear, they’re waterproof, low maintenance and very durable,” says Mariana. Just ensure the tiles you choose are slip-resistant.

ewind to Roman times and mosaics were a design favourite. They were used to decorate, make a statement and demonstrate wealth – but ancient crafters also realised how these colourful pieces set in mortar provided a durable surface for floors and walls. Fast-forward thousands of years, and these uses still apply – apart from one. Mosaic tiles, which are bought in sheets rather than individually, are now relatively affordable and available to everyone wanting to create a personalised look in any room.

Mosaics and bathrooms make an excellent design pairing. The tiles add wow factor, whether they’re used alongside a bath or vanity, or laid for a shower or powder room feature wall. To create a more dramatic effect, opt for a colour that contrasts with the other tiles in the bathroom, recommends Decor8 Tiles’ Grant Haffenden – but aim to maintain a cohesive style throughout your home. “If using a fan mosaic as a kitchen Decor8 ‘Cascade’ 290mm x 272mm mosaic tile in Orient Green, $159/pack of 5, I/N: 0289663†

Eye-catching finishes

When choosing mosaics, materials and edge are the two key factors that can really bring your project to life. “There are straight, pressed, flat-rectified [precisely machineedged], round and curved-edge mosaics, which offer a different

design element to any room,” says Grant. “They can be ceramic, porcelain, glass, natural stone and even mirror and are set randomly or in a structured pattern. Mosaics have different finishes, all providing a different feel.” They also come in matt and gloss: reflecting light, a gloss finish helps a room feel lighter and brighter, while matt mosaics offer a more subtle, natural finish.

2 Check the set-out of the sheets with the straight edges positioned against the bench to minimise cuts. To adjust the size, cut the mesh from the back with a utility knife. Wear gloves and eye protection to cut individual mosaics with tile nippers.

3 Hold a notched trowel at 45° to spread adhesive over the wall. Position the sheets, pushing them into the adhesive while adjusting for evenly spaced gaps. Tap over the surface with an offcut and mallet, then remove excess adhesive with a damp cloth.

4 Leave to dry for 24 hours, then apply sealer with a mini roller to prevent grout from sticking to the tiles, leaving to dry. Remove spacers and apply grout with a squeegee, working it into the gaps. Tip: Four sheets of these tiles used 1.5kg of grout.

1

Keep in mind... Ensure the substrate is suitable for tiling, and is in good condition, flat, sealed and waterproofed. Clean the area with sugar soap wipes to remove grease spots that may affect adhesion. n Drying times are affected by temperature and humidity, so ensure adhesive is dry and grout is firm before moving on to the next step. n Avoid using coloured grout, especially black, with unsealed natural stone tiles, such as marble, slate, sandstone and travertine, as it can stain the surface. n Marble mosaics are porous and must be sealed. For non-porous glass and ceramic mosaics, skip sealing in step four, but always seal the grout after tiling.

6 Leave for two hours, then remove the grout haze with a slightly damp microfibre cloth. Apply silicon sealer between the bench and the tiles, running a damp finger along to remove excess and smooth the surface. Leave for two days before finishing the tiling with sealer using a mini roller.

hether it’s attached to the house or not, your garage is a part of your home. You walk through it daily and might use it for everything from potting plants to working out, so why wouldn’t you want it to look its best? Dy-Mark Epoxy Coat gives your garage the showroom-chic look it deserves – that’s why it’s Australia’s favourite DIY garage floor coating kit. So pencil off a couple of weekends and start creating your fresh garage floor. Here’s how: Note: The following are simplified instructions. For a durable and longlasting finish, ensure you completely follow the product instruction manual.

STEP 1 Start with a clean, unpainted concrete floor that is swept, scrubbed and stain free – use a degreaser to remove grease spots.

STEP 2 Etch the floor – this involves using a diluted acid etch to roughen the surface of the concrete and maximise the adhesion between the surface and the epoxy product. Put on your safety gear, wet the floor and then spread the diluted etch. Work it in with a stiff broom. When the solution has stopped fizzing, rinse thoroughly and remove excess water with a rubber squeegee. Let it dry for at least three days – do a moisture test to be sure.

STEP 3 Use a filler product to repair any holes or cracks, removing any dust when you’re done. Then finish your prep by taping up the trims, skirtings or walls where they meet the floor.

STEP 4 Mix the epoxy by stirring together the two parts. Mix with a flat paddle stirrer for 3-5 minutes. Leave the mixture for the appropriate induction time, then apply it within the pot life of the product (see full instructions).

STEP 5 Use a brush to cut in the edges, then use a roller to apply the epoxy. Work in sections of one square metre, scattering decorative flakes over the wet sections as they’re laid. For the best end result, your new epoxy floor should cure for 7-10 days before heavy vehicle or foot traffic starts back up.

he garage tends to be the first place clutter collects, and this was certainly the case for homeowner Katy. Her Sydney house had been built as a retirement dream home for her and her late husband but, she explains, “The garage was his domain and over the years it had been let go.” Inspired by the possibilities, Katy committed to transforming it into a well-organised and useful space.

Out with the old

The first step to order is figuring out how much space you need and how much room remains. Katy only had one car to park in this double garage, allowing her to explore other uses, such as an exercise zone and more. bunnings.com.au |

Being brutal about what stuff you’re hanging on to, then finding a logical way to store it all, is key. Once she started this process, Katy says, “I was really shocked. I have never seen so much dirt and clutter in my life!” Katy’s jumble would be familiar to most: power tools, garden equipment, bikes, outdoor cushions, paint tins. But there was also plenty of ‘junk’, she says. “I found things that I’d had no idea were there. It was chaotic clearing it out but it’s been quite cathartic.”

Well grounded

Concrete floors are standard for garages and they do the job just fine, but unsealed concrete tends to pick up stains and tyre marks. An

epoxy flooring finish is practical – it’s easy to clean up oil and spills – and looks great. This finish offers a high-end look you can DIY. Just make sure you start with a perfectly clean surface, read the information and instructions carefully and wear suitable safety gear.

Get serious about storage

Once the junk has been cleared, take an inventory of what’s left and look at the best way of storing it. Bunnings garage organisation buyer Terri Wolff recommends choosing a sturdy unit with an appropriate weight per shelf capacity. “In shelving units, store large or heavy items on the bottom shelf,” she advises. everyday items in the middle for easy access, leaving infrequently used or seasonal items for the top shelf, she suggests. “Storing things in labelled crates and tubs achieves a uniform and tidy look,” she adds. Glass jars make ideal storage for bolts, washers and other small items. A small lockable cabinet offers security for tools, and Katy can also use it to store chemicals or other dangerous items she doesn’t want the grandchildren to find. “Whichever solution you choose, make sure it’s flexible enough to be extended or adapted as your needs change,” says Terri.

Beloved pooch Mr Darcy wasn’t forgotten in this garage makeover. A simple arrangement of hooks, baskets and a bench seat (made from a cube unit and foam rubber cut to size and covered with a drop sheet; see page 56) works like a mud room. Katy can use the space to store Mr Darcy’s toys and leads (“I can never find the lead. This is an utter game changer for me!”) and deal with her muddy footwear. “I do a lot of bushwalking and it’s wonderful to have somewhere to sit and remove my boots,” she says.

Paint colours may vary on application. •Timbers and wall linings vary by state and territory; contact your local store for further information.

This sporting life

Sports gear is a common storage dilemma. It’s a good idea to get bikes up off the floor so they don’t get knocked over or take up valuable floor space. Consider how you want to hang your bike – vertically or horizontally – and choose a hook to suit, checking it meets weight requirements and is right for your type of wall. Other options, suggests Terri, include floor stands and ceiling hoists. In Katy's garage, a plywood panel forms a base with hooks to hold everything from helmets to racquets (see page 56). Wire baskets are great for storing smaller items like tennis balls. As well as a place to keep her equipment, Katy also hoped to carve out a space for exercising. Adding a flat wall-mounted mirror and rubber matting turns this corner of the garage into a mini weights room or a yoga studio. “The gym wall is sensational! I had quite a lot of homeless gym gear and now it has a place,” says Katy.

No matter how vigilantly you vacuum, all soft furnishings will accumulate dust and bacteria

3

Curtains

Window coverings gather dust, mould and tricky stains so should be cleaned at least every six months, but don’t just bundle them into the washing machine without reading the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Many can be hand washed in cold water using a gentle detergent (not bleach) and line dried from their hooks. Always wipe down the curtain rail and give the inside of the windows a clean before rehanging. If washing them seems like too much work, steam cleaning is an option for unlined curtains.

Integrated back-to-wall floor pans are a neat, easy-clean option – especially if they have a removable seat

YOUR SPRING CLEAN LIST Carpets & upholstery

Large amounts of dust or toxins can impact the quality of the air you breathe, so it’s important to get rid of these for people in your household who suffer from allergies and asthma. Britex’s Jennifer Candy says giving your carpets and upholstery a deep clean twice a year, using the hot-water extraction process, is not only great for removing visible stains and odours, but is essential to aid the removal of harmful bacteria and allergens. “This includes dust mites, pet dander and deep staining that you don’t see,” says Jennifer. Use steam cleaners and specialty detergents that work by reaching deep down into the fibres of carpets and upholstery. This gives them a thorough clean and will also help extend their lifetime. Carpetcleaning machines can be rented from the Hire Shop‡. 60 bunnings.com.au |

Toilet

While the loo undoubtedly gets a weekly clean – perhaps even daily if you have small children – it’s a good idea to give it a thorough once-over every few weeks, and a spring-clean provides perfect timing. This includes disinfecting all surface areas, the floor and surrounding walls, too. If there’s significant grime building up, try scrubbing the bowl with a mix of baking soda and vinegar, or squirt in store-bought loo cleaner and leave overnight. If this doesn’t bring the results you’re after, try draining the bowl and using a light abrasive cleaner to attack any remaining problem areas. (To drain it, rapidly tip a bucket of water into the bowl, which will force most of the water down the trap. Use a sponge to soak up the small amount that is left.)

A specialty brush – with multiple furry ‘fingers’ that fit between the slats (see below) – makes dusting Venetians a less tedious task

4

Tiles

Like carpets, tiles and especially grouting need a thorough clean, particularly for removing mould, explains Karcher’s Candice Cooke. “Mould produces allergens, irritants and even toxins,” she says. “Simply inhaling or touching mould spores may cause allergic reactions, and in some cases asthma attacks.” Before you pull out the scrubbing brush, steamer or grout cleaners, understand what to use on your floor (check the manufacturer’s instructions). For example, steam cleaners are great for ceramic and porcelain tiles, but not for stone.

1

“Over time, carpets and fabrics can begin to smell due to bacteria build-up. Giving them a deep clean with a steamer kills this bacteria and helps remove odours” Candice Cooke, Karcher

Venetian blinds

The slats of Venetian blinds are a dust trap. Some blinds, if they’re beyond the job of a feather duster, slat brush or vacuum cleaner, can be taken off their fittings and cleaned in the bath. Place towels underneath to avoid scratching and use a light detergent in warm water to help rub off grime. However, this method isn’t suitable for blinds made of timber or materials that swell. Timber blinds can be cleaned with a wood cleaner or furniture polish.

6

Windows

It’s a time-consuming task, but cleaning windows is a must to give your home a spring-fresh feel. “Deposits of dirt created by winter conditions, exhaust fumes, pollen, fallen leaves or residues from insects not only impact visibility but also shorten the life span of window seals,” says Candice. Window vacuums can lessen the burden of interior cleaning – you simply spray on the cleaning agent, wipe with the microfibre cloth to soften and loosen the dirt, then vacuum it away. Products that include a hose spray for touch-free cleaning can help reach higher windows.

Oven

A greasy, dirty oven is not only bad for the taste of food and the efficiency of your appliance, it’s a dangerous fire hazard. If you’re noticing a waft of smoke drifting out when you open the oven door, it’s time to give it a deep clean. Depending on the level of work required, a baking soda and vinegar paste left overnight can be effective for loosening baked-on residue. But if you’ve let things go for a while, bring in a heavy-duty cleaning product that

Dishwasher

Like the oven, a dishwasher needs a deep clean to operate to its full potential. Remove the bottom filter and run it under hot water, scrubbing with a plastic brush to clear any food remnants. Then, remove any gunk from around the drain area and door seal, and give other internal parts a scrub with hot, soapy water. Replace the filter, then pop in a cup of white vinegar for a cycle to remove any grease buildup. Follow with a cycle using baking soda to rid the machine of odours. (Always check your manual first.)

Television

Sticky fingers, dust and pet hair stuck to the screen and surrounds mean the TV also deserves some good housekeeping for optimum viewing. Screens are delicate, so use a microfibre cloth or electrostatic duster for dust removal. Be sure to turn the TV off first and don’t forget the remote controls – wipe these down with a disinfectant cloth.

Fresh and hygienic Impeccably clean floors all the time with minimal effort? Yes please! With Vileda, it feels great to feel at home A two-chamber bucket design keeps water continuously clean for mopping

T

here’s nothing like the satisfaction of enjoying a beautifully clean home. But nothing ruins the sense of domestic bliss like stickiness or grittiness underfoot! For a home that’s truly clean by any standards, you need floor-cleaning tools that mean business. You need Vileda.

THE DEEP CLEAN A great mop brings your floors back to their sparkling and hygienic best each and every time. But a normal mop and bucket does a dubious job as water gets dirtier. Vileda has solved that problem with the ingenious Rinse Clean Spin Mop & Bucket System, which features two tanks, separating clean from dirty water, so the last stroke of the mop is as effective as the first because you are cleaning your floors with continuously clean water.

@ViledaAustralia @vileda_australia www.vileda.com.au

HOW IT WORKS The microfibre mop head removes up to 99 per cent of bacteria with water alone*, and the triangular head gets right into every corner. The system is a dream to clean with; the telescopic handle adjusts to a comfortable length, while the hands-free bucket foot pedal makes for easy wringing and gives you control over the moisture level, making the mop suitable for use on every type of hard flooring – even timber! The reusable mop head is machine washable. And when the mop head does eventually wear out, it is easily replaced with a Vileda Rinse Clean Spin Mop Refill.

THE IN-BETWEEN CLEAN With a busy family, a clean home rarely stays clean for long. Footprints, minor spills and even the splatter shaken from a post-walk puppy – it’s all erased in seconds with the NEW Vileda ProMist Plus Spray Mop. This grab-and-go, bucket-free solution is the perfect in-between cleaning tool; grab the spray mop, spritz your floors using the built-in spray bottle, then mop the floor and you’re done! The microfibre mop pad removes up to 99 per cent of bacteria with just water*. It even flips over, giving you twice the cleaning coverage in one go. Then just throw your mop head in the wash when you’re done. For tougher messes, use the NEW Vileda ProMist Max Spray Mop Scrub Refill, which gives the original spray mop greater scrubbing power; thousands of fibres capture even more grease and dirt – perfect for tiled or extra grimy floors. When the mop head gets grubby, just pop it into the wash on a cycle up to 60ºC

OUTDOOR CLEANING

HIGH IMPACT ARM YOURSELF WITH A PRESSURE WASHER AND BLAST AWAY EXTERIOR GRIME

Wet winter weather takes its toll on timber, but the right tools can transform grungy outdoor areas

Words KYLIE JACKES

U

sing a pressure washer is immensely satisfying – seeing the instant result as dirt and muck lift away from multiple surfaces, with minimal effort, makes it an invaluable outdoor cleaning tool. Concrete, pavers, windows, facades, decks, gutters, downpipes, wheelie bins, garden furniture, gardening tools and even cars can all be tackled with one of these handy machines.

“For timber surfaces like decks, start on a soft or low setting, clean in the direction of the grain and hold the lance at a distance of 10-30cm from where you’re spraying” Mark Giannakopoulos, Karcher

bunnings

Pressure washers are motor-driven devices that are commonly attached to your garden hose, and use a high-pressure water jet to clean exterior surfaces. Bunnings power garden buyer Simon Warmington says, “Check the length of the high-pressure hose as all pressure washers are equipped with different length high-pressure hoses, and some include a handy hose reel, making it easy to reach all areas. They’re easily stored, with the hose wound up and accessories neatly placed in their holders on the machine.” Consider whether you want the convenience of plugging into an electric source, or the flexibility of battery- or petrol-powered machines. It’s also important

to understand pressure and flow rate, which together impact performance. The pressure generated by the nozzle is measured in psi or ‘pounds per square inch’. “The higher the psi, the more tough dirt, grime and mould you will be able to lift,” explains Simon. But, he warns, “Be sure to check that the psi isn’t too high for surfaces that require more gentle cleaning.” Generally, 1000-1700psi is suitable for garden tools, bikes and cars. Areas like decks, driveways, outdoor furniture and building facades call for 18002100psi, while a machine with higher than 2100psi is best for large surfaces and cleaning for longer periods of time. For these jobs, you can rent a heavy-duty 3000psi petrol-powered unit from the Hire Shop‡. 

As a guide, the greater the flow rate – or amount of water passing through the nozzle per minute – the greater the area you can clean. Mark Giannakopoulos at Karcher says, “For small tasks or small objects such as a bicycle or garden furniture, a flow rate of seven litres can be sufficient. For larger areas like driveways, a flow rate of 10 litres will be faster and more effective.”

Nozzles & accessories

For casual use around the home, choose a model that comes equipped with different power jets with nozzles to shape the water stream. “A sharper bundled point jet is ideal to dislodge stubborn dirt, a flat stream can cover a larger area quickly and the Karcher Dirt Blaster nozzle, with a rotating pencil jet, combines the best of both,” says Mark. Attachments such as brushes and extension lances, as well as detergents, can enhance functionality.

Clean with care

When pressure cleaning, wear safety glasses, enclosed shoes and earmuffs. Ryobi’s Luke Payne says, “Know that you will likely get wet, and always be cautious of what you’re about to clean. Some pressure washers can be extremely powerful, which may damage the surface.” Mark advises, “If in doubt, check with the surface manufacturer’s guidelines, and trial the settings you’ve selected on an inconspicuous area.”

INDOOR GREENERY

EASY WINNERS

Choose hardy varieties but follow the plant label’s advice for lighting and watering needs

1Sansevieria

Snake plant is a longlived evergreen that needs minimal maintenance and is virtually indestructible. The spear-like, stiff leaves in dark greens, some with yellow strips on the edge, can be sharp, so keep out of reach of young hands! Use it as an architectural statement in your home; it is also a fantastic air purifier, absorbing toxins.

2Syngonium

This bushy and versatile plant, called arrowhead vine, is easy to care for and ranges in colour from strawberry-pink to green to variegated white-andgreen. It starts off compact, but grows and spreads out quickly. Don’t be afraid to prune, as the leaves will grow back fuller, creating a lush look perfect for a bookcase or side table.

3Devil’s ivy

Give minimal care to this tenacious tropical vine and watch it flourish! Best in a warm spot with filtered light, its leaves are a glossy green or variegated with glints of gold. Let the soil surface dry out before watering. Prune to control shape and size (then propagate the stems). It’s poisonous to cats and dogs (and humans, if ingested) so place up high.

4Spathiphyllum

The peace lily is a popular indoor plant, with emerald foliage crowned by oval white flowers. Varieties include variegated and large foliaged forms. A natural air-purifier, it’s beautiful and hardy, but avoid direct sunlight and keep up the water to avoid drooping. All parts of it are mildly poisonous, and it can be particularly toxic to cats.

TOP TIPS FOR HAPPY PLANTS

■ Perfect

5Zanzibar gem

Also known as ZZ plant, Zanzibar gem is a slowgrowing, low-maintenance lovely. Its long stems are lush with shiny, waxy, ovalshaped leaves, giving the plant an exotic air, and it’s guaranteed to brighten any corner. But note, Zanzibar gem prefers indirect light. This is a perfect option if you want a hardy plant that is a little different.

6Dieffenbachia

This showy, sturdy plant is a highly prized addition to homes and offices. Its large, ornate leaves in greens, whites and creams provide a lush vibe. Dieffenbachia is fast-growing, reaching heights of 60cm within about a year of planting, and commonly grows to 1.5 metres. Position in indirect light, rotate it occasionally and avoid overwatering. 

the position Plants can take a while to adjust to a location, so check their growing needs on the label or online. Most indoor plants prefer a well-lit spot out of direct sunlight. ■ Pick your products Use a quality potting mix and fertiliser specifically for indoor plants – and make sure they’re the right ones for the type of plant. ■ Leave some room Choose a pot big enough for the plant – one to two sizes up from the nursery pot is about right. Check for signs the plant needs repotting, like roots growing out of drainage holes. ■ Water seasonally Be aware of your plants’ watering needs as the weather changes. They will dry out faster in summer, while overwatering is a greater danger in winter, resulting in waterlogged roots and potentially attracting fungus gnats. ■ Dust them off Giving leaves a wipe with a damp cloth makes them look nicer, and also allows more light to hit the leaves for photosynthesis – clean leaves equal a healthy plant. 

LEVEL UP

Pay a little more attention to these beauties, and they’ll reward you with lush growth

Keep in mind... Always read the plant’s label to make sure it’s safe for a home with children or pets, as some plants, or plant parts, can be toxic if ingested. n Wear gloves and a mask when handling potting mix. n Store all gardening chemicals and products out of the reach of children and pets. n

The moth orchid is popular due to its colourful blooms, which range from shell-pink to cerise to speckled yellow, and can last for up to three months from the bud. It may appear delicate, but can be easy to grow in the right conditions: indirect but bright light, high humidity, specialist potting mix and careful watering.

8Calathea

This tropical stunner, also called peacock or zebra plant, is mesmerising, with foliage in a range of eye-popping patterns and colours. Even the undersides of the leaves are works of art, and they open and close at different times of the day. It prefers indirect light and, being non-toxic, is suitable for homes with children or pets.

9 Fiddle leaf fig

A favourite with interior designers, the statuesque fiddle leaf fig has lustrous, wide, violin-shaped leaves in a verdant green, ideal for creating a fresh foliage backdrop indoors. Provide a large pot, bright, indirect light, even temperatures, and jungle-like humidity, and it should thrive. Beware, this one grows into a large tree and may hit the ceiling!

Before

1 Using a mitre saw, cut eight 2400mm lengths of quad moulding into equal halves, removing the breakout with 180-grit abrasive paper. Cut 100mm PVC pipe to 1180mm long. Tip: Adjust the lengths to match the height of the lamp, cutting the pipe 20mm shorter.

2 To make a pencil jig on a 250mm length of pine, mark 50mm from one end for a nail, then drill through at 100mm and 200mm from the same end with an 8mm bit. Nail the jig to an MDF panel and mark a circle at 200mm, then move it to mark two more at 100mm.

3 Use a jigsaw to cut out the large and one small circle for the base. Cut the remaining small circle 2mm outside the mark for the stand cover. Drill through all three nail holes with a 51mm holesaw. Tip: Place offcuts underneath to avoid damaging the work surface.

5 Hook 300mm bungee cords around the top and base, wrapping them firmly to hold the moulding in place. Apply adhesive around the top of the pipe and inside the moulding, position the stand cover, press down firmly and leave to dry thoroughly.

6 Centre the base circles together, pre-drilling three holes into the top with a 3mm bit, securing with 25mm screws. Apply adhesive over the top of the lamp stand base, slot the circle base over the lamp, press down firmly and leave to dry.

7 Mask over the cord, switch and socket with painter’s tape. Remove the bungee cords and apply primer over the new cover and base, leaving to dry. Apply two coats of interior paint, leaving to dry after each coat. Remove the tape, then install shade and globe.

1 With a circular saw, cut two MDF panels to 1600mm as the front and back. Cut another panel for two 1600mm x 20mm sides and a 410mm x 20mm top and base. For the front cutout, mark lines 70mm in from the top and sides, then 155mm down and in.

2 At the base, mark a line 370mm up, then 155mm up and in from the lines. Make a cardboard jig with the nail hole and pencil hole 155mm apart. Nail the jig to each 155mm mark to set out the top and base arches.

3 Clamp the front panel on sawhorses to drill a starter hole with a 10mm bit just inside the cutout, and complete the cut with a jigsaw. Smooth around the inside edges of the arch using a drill with a 120-grit abrasive flap wheel.

4 To make a frame, apply timber adhesive along the side, top and base pieces, position them flush with the edge of the front panel and secure with 30mm bullet head nails. Smooth the edges with 180-grit abrasive paper and wipe away dust with a damp cloth.

5 Use a mini roller to apply a primer over the back and front panels and around all edges, leaving to dry. Use a clean roller to apply two coats of water-based enamel, leaving to dry after each.

6 With the frame right-side down, dab mirror construction adhesive around the cutout, centre the mirror and clamp to dry. Apply timber adhesive around the frame, centre the back panel and secure with nails. Put in place with a safety furniture anchor, following the instructions to suit your wall type.

Keep in mind Projects are for indoor use only. n Always wear the recommended safety gear when using power tools. If sanding or using cutting tools, including mitre saws and holesaws, work in a well-ventilated area. n When painting, always use a drop sheet to protect the surrounding area from spills or overspray and work in a well-ventilated area. n Any hardwired electrical work must be carried out by a licensed tradie. n

Line yourself up for DIY jobs using highly accurate guides from the Bosch laser levelling tool The Bosch Universal Level 360 makes installing perfectly placed shelves a breeze

G

ive your next home improvement projects the green light with the Bosch Universal Level 360 Line Laser. The precise, easy-to-use tool provides highly visible laser guidelines across the whole room.

UP TO THE TASK Hanging art can be a daunting job in any home, whether you’ve just moved in or you’ve simply been avoiding the measuring-up work you need to ensure frames are straight and well-spaced. The Universal Level 360 has you sorted. This ingenious tool projects a 360 º horizontal laser line throughout an entire room, as well as a 120 º vertical line, so you can breeze through getting the art up and move on to the rest of the DIY jobs you’ve been avoiding. Hand rails? Curtain rods? Even suspended ceilings just got a whole lot easier. With the help of

the incline functionality, the Universal Level 360 can also project diagonal laser lines, perfect for staircases and railings.

SEE FOR YOURSELF Not only does the Universal Level 360 boast a 24m range, but its green laser diode increases the visibility of laser lines by up to four times that of its red-light counterparts, even in bright lighting conditions. You can count on the clearly visible laser lines to be precise, too, with +/- 0.4 mm/m accuracy.

RUNNING POWER The Universal Level 360 doesn’t need any fancy chargers or hard-to-find batteries. It simply runs on four AA alkaline batteries (which are included with the product) that are easy to source and replace, while the laser itself has a three-year warranty.

*Tripod and clamp sold separately. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.

1

Stick with it

Got some timber furniture that’s developed a nasty crack? PVA timber adhesive is a reliable all-rounder, but make sure you clamp the repair until dry. It’s also a good plan to have a tube of superglue ready for making extremely strong and fast-drying repairs to broken ceramic ornaments and most plastics and metals*.

2

Choose the good oil

Silencing squeaky hinges, lubricating bike chains and helping release stubborn nuts and bolts aren’t the only things WD-40 is good for. Says Louisa Alexander at the WD-40 Company, “It cleans and protects WD-40 lubricant metals and it drives with Smart Straw, out moisture from $7.89/175g, spark plugs, too.” I/N: 6100413

3

Take your fill

No matter how careful you are, there’s a decent chance you’ll end up with a ding or scrape somewhere if your home’s walls are lined with plasterboard. Keep premixed interior filler on hand for a quick and simple solution. It can be sanded and painted once cured. Round out your kit with Uni-Pro flexible gap filler – vital ‘Multi Purpose’ if a crack opens where interior filler, movement might occur. $6.50/500g,

4

Get the picture

I/N: 1210281

You never know when a piece of wall art might take your fancy, so keep a hanging kit on hand that includes everything you need to put up a picture easily. If you’re restless with your interior decor and like to change things up, use Command picture hanging strips, which can be removed without leaving a trace. 3M ‘Command’ adhesive picture hanging strips in White, $7/pack of 4 large, I/N: 3950291

5

Be tool-ready

A collection of reliable basic hand tools should be part of everyone’s fix-it kit – you might be surprised how often you’ll need a manual screwdriver. Keep a socket set, measuring tape, hammer, pliers and other stalwarts together in a bag or container for whenever you need to tighten a handle or tap in a nail.

6

Go with the flow

Using a drain snake or caustic drain-cleaning agent to clear a blocked drain is about the only plumbing job you can do yourself. With one or both of these in your fix-it kit, you’ll be able to take action if water is taking a long time to Drain Clean drain cleaning drain. 7 Make it secure

Many screw types, lengths and gauges are available (the latter denoted by a ‘G’ number), but a useful few will help you cover a range of jobs. If fixing chipboard or soft materials to timber, Bhavya Mishra at ITW Proline (distributor of Zenith and Buildex) suggests using Zenith 8G x 30mm

Solve countless emergencies with heavyduty cloth tape that has strong adhesive, making it suitable for myriad uses. For low-pressure leaks, choose a quick-fix option such as Selleys Storm waterproof tape. “This is a simple solution for patching emergency leaks in and around the home, such as a leaky gutter or downpipe,” says Emily. “It lasts at least 48 hours and even works in the wet and rain, so you can avoid more water damage in a downpour and give yourself time to organise a tradie,” she explains.

Tip: buy a few Dynabolts to store with your wall plugs for situations when you need to fasten heavier objects to a masonry wall

8

Mind the gap

From the kitchen splashback to the shower recess, there are many gaps around the home that might need mouldy silicone replaced. For convenience, choose a 100ml tube such as Selleys No Mould silicone sealant. Emily Melinz, from Selleys, says, “The easy-to-use tube is great for smaller jobs or when you don’t want to use a caulking gun.”

9

Weigh it up

Whether it’s a new shelf or a curtain-rod bracket, you’re likely to need to firmly secure something to the wall. In masonry walls, ordinary wall plugs will usually do the trick – redcoded plugs can be used with those 8G x 30mm chipboard screws in your kit. If your walls are plasterboard, use spring toggles or plasterboard or hollow wall anchors.

When using adhesive or drain cleaner, wear eye protection, a mask and gloves, and use adhesive in a well-ventilated area. Keep these products and all chemicals out of reach of children and pets. n When hanging objects, use suitable fasteners for your type of wall and for the weight of the piece. Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional. n Any plumbing or electrical works must be carried out by a licensed tradie. n

For fixing into light-gauge metal sheeting – such as garage doors – choose 8G x 20mm galvanised button-head metal screws. “If you need a solution for jobs such as fastening to treated timbers, general-purpose external timber screws are an excellent option,” says Bhavya. “For these applications, use 12G x 25mm galvanised type 17 hex head timber screws.” To replace fasteners in Zenith 8G x decking, opt for 8G 20mm galvanised button head x 50mm countersunk metal screws , stainless steel $4.28/pack of 30, decking screws.
