Welcome to the 2023 Community Report Card. This year we are proud to be back with our community engagement programs thriving throughout Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Our team has focused on strengthening our back-to-basics approach and doing more of what we do best - caring for our community. We have been “living local” through grassroots projects which took place all over the two countries and many communities in which we live and work.

We know we are stronger together, so we have proudly supported our community partnerships and found many ways to work alongside our essential services and frontline workers, providing meaningful disaster support and relief, building resilience and strengthening the impact of these incredible groups.

A sincere thanks to all the community groups and notfor-profit organisations we had the privilege of working alongside this year - your efforts are making a tangible and important difference to those who need it most, and we are grateful for the opportunity to support this work.

We are really excited to see our programs back up and flying after several years of challenging conditions, and we can’t wait to continue showing up for people in the year ahead.

Transforming gardens in Lilydale

A group of Bunnings stores and a team from the National Support Centre visited Community Housing in Lilydale, working hard to transform the residents’ gardens.

Little Food Festival

The team planted almost 100 native plants and mulched the area, as well as adding some succulents which were generously provided by a resident’s family member.

In April 2023, team members from Bunnings Collingwood and the National Support Centre were thrilled to participate in the Little Food Festival once again, hosted by the Sandro Demaio Foundation. The two-day event held at Fed Square, Melbourne, aims to teach kids about healthy food through education, creativity and fun! At the festival, our team had the pleasure of helping over 2,000 children learn about where their food comes from and how to grow their own vegetable seedlings at home.

Our Croydon store visited Eildon Primary School, where they were excited to be able to help students plant their own trees. The school community will enjoy nurturing and watching their trees grow in the years ahead.

Not to be defeated by a rainy day, the Smithfield team made the most of their visit to Newman Community College by running a garden-bed

Our team is passionate about being a part of the communities we live and work in, so it was a special honour for us to be able to help restore the iconic structure to its former glory.

At Bunnings we love to make a difference in our local communities, and the team at Burleigh Waters did just that when they visited an early learning centre, teaching the kids all about gardening as they planted new seasonal vegetables.

On a sunny 40-degree day in Gidgegannup, Bunnings and Wesfarmers teamed up to participate in the seed collecting program for As One Nyitting.

As One Nyitting is a First Nations social enterprise creating cultural programs and wellness resources for the community including the revegetation of local sites through the Birak Season seed collecting program. The program focused on how the seeds aid the revegetation and environmental sustainability of the local region. This was a very special cultural experience for our team.

Growing Indigenous Cultural Awareness

In line with our commitment to fostering our Indigenous awareness, a team from WA took part in a cultural on Country tour, hosted by Uncle Len and his family at Lake Gwellup. The team learnt about the history of the area, family traditions, living on this land and how we can nurture it for many years to come.

The Bunnings Hammer Program engages students to learn everyday life skills they may not have had the opportunity to do so otherwise. This four week program is held in all of our SA/NT stores, or with team visiting schools.

Bunnings’ commitment to standing by its communities in times of need was highlighted once again as our team visited Hillcrest Primary School.

This year, the team undertook a major garden makeover transformation at the school, providing meaningful grassroots support for a community in need.

Many of our South Australian stores joined forces to run a sausage sizzle at this year’s Nunga Generation Footy Carnival, cooking a whopping

60kgs of sausages!

Ironbark Aboriginal Corporation and Bunnings joined Clontarf Foundation students from four local academies at the Holtze activity centre for a day preparing for Clontarf’s Inaugural Top End Billy Kart Derby.

Students enjoyed learning how to assemble and paint billy carts and were thrilled to build their own machines using new skills ahead of the big race.

The Graduation Project is an annual community initiative that aims to support local primary schools throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand and Australia with a valuable contribution to the school grounds and student education and wellbeing.

The graduating class of 2022 at Waitākiri School in Christchurch had the option of selecting either a buddy bench or trees as their gift to the school.

Scarecrows supporting the community

Our Rockhampton team made a visit to a local disability support association, where some keen clients helped our honorary team member –“Haypatch” build a wonderful scarecrow addition for their community gardens.

SA stores also introduced Scarecrow September which was a great opportunity for community engagement with scarecrow building activities in store or at local schools, kindergartens and community gardens.

Seaford, SA

Mangawhai Environmental Day

Alongside Sustainable Kaipara, teams from Bunnings Whangārei, Kerikeri, Kaikohe and Mangawhai stores, as well as a team from the Auckland region stores rolled up their sleeves for a day focused on sustainability. The hardworking crew joined in the efforts to plant natives, weed and lay mulch, make compost and clear rubbish from the local environment, to help restore and conserve local areas for future preservation.

Another team worked with Te Whai Community Trust to undertake several projects, including re-racking the food bank, building a new wheelchair ramp and playhouse, and installing new pathways.

A group of team members from stores in the Christchurch area attended a tree planting day where they planted native Kahikatea with Conservation Volunteers New Zealand.

Kohanga Reo community project

Te Kōhanga Reo o Tuhikaramea and team members from Bunnings Hamilton South worked together to build garden boxes, plant fruit trees, berry bushes and other seedlings for tamariki, their whānau, and the local community to enjoy.

Worm farms for Te Kohanga Reo o Te Arapeta -

In May, our Mt Wellington store visited Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Arapeta to donate worms for their worm farm.

Along with the visit and worm donation, the store also provided bins to help the tamariki learn how to recycle. Watch the video here.

When natural disasters happen, Bunnings store teams are there to assist those in need through local hands-on activity, fundraising BBQs and product donations. When the recovery phase begins, our teams make it a priority to continue to actively support communities.

Reds Run

support for communities hit by extreme weather

October 2022

Following the extreme weather and flooding which hit Victoria and parts of New South Wales and Tasmania in October, Bunnings threw its support behind The Salvation Army’s Flood Relief. In true Bunnings style, we gathered behind the BBQ at every store in Australia and helped raise and contribute $400,000 towards The Salvation Army’s Flood Relief.

All funds raised through the Reds Run BBQ went towards supporting impacted communities through the emergency and recovery phase. The funds allowed the Salvos to be on the ground immediately and for the long haul, with financial grants along with practical and emotional assistance.

Our teams in flood impacted regions also actively assisted with product donations and support and care for those who were displaced.

New Zealand team rallies in the wake of natural disaster

February 2023

In January, extreme weather and floods impacted communities across the Kimberley region in northern Western Australia. Bunnings provided support through product donations and assisted collectively with the broader Wesfarmers family.

Bunnings further supported with a state-based Reds Run sausage sizzle and the Western Australian communities showed up in great numbers. The Bunnings WA team, along with the additional support from the Wesfarmers team and The Salvation Army volunteers, raised and contributed over $50,000. These funds were donated to The Salvation Army to support impacted communities through the emergency and recovery phases of the Western Australian floods.

In New Zealand during January and February, severe destruction was caused by floods and Cyclone Gabrielle with many New Zealanders losing their homes and livelihoods. Team members were out in the community helping with the clean-up, alongside volunteers and agencies on the ground.

free Rapid Antigen Tests were distributed through several WA Bunnings Stores this year

Bunnings assisted relief efforts by supplying $90,000 worth of products and materials, including gumboots, clean-up gear, PPE, storage supplies, water, batteries, generators and gas cylinders, to community groups, Civil Defence and emergency services who distributed these essential goods where they were needed most in the impacted regions.

The Bunnings team once again rallied and came together for a Reds Run sausage sizzle with all funds going to New Zealand Red Cross, to support impacted communities through the emergency and recovery phase. Together with their generous communities, Bunnings raised and contributed $35,000.

Crime Prevention Week 2022

Every year the Bunnings team across Australia and New Zealand joins Police and community groups, such as Neighbourhood Watch/Support, to raise awareness for Crime Prevention Week.

In-store displays and demonstrations are set up to show ways in which we can deter theft and fraud, to help our communities stay safe and secure. Stores also provide D.I.Y. tips and tricks and promote awareness and education programs to customers and the wider community. Warrandyte,

Honouring CFA volunteers

National Volunteers Week is held each May, and with such a strong connection between our teams and the Country Fire Authority, this year Ringwood Warehouse marked the occasion by visiting the local Warrandyte branch with a special donation.

To commemorate Police Remembrance week, our Broadmeadows Warehouse ran a “Snag with a Cop” sausage sizzle, with all funds contributed to the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Support for NZ Red Cross refugees

In October 2021, Bunnings partnered with New Zealand Red Cross in a new project to provide welcome packs to former refugees settling in New Zealand/Aotearoa.

Since the partnership began, over 350 welcome packs filled with essential household items, including laundry and cleaning supplies, kitchen and bathroom essentials and electrical products such as power boards have been hand-packed and donated by local Bunnings teams.

Bunnings and SES join forces to fight floods

Devastating floods impacted Victoria in October, which saw many of the community, team and stores affected. We were very proud to have three of our own team members from the Bendigo and Epsom stores doing incredible work as SES volunteers.

Swapping red for orange to celebrate the SES

In May, our stores were a sea of orange in honour of Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) - a celebration of the invaluable role our SES volunteer crew play in the community. The Caringbah team gathered to share stories with local SES volunteers, presenting them with a hamper of orange themed goodies and Bunnings Gift Cards to be used for much needed supplies and equipment.

At Bunnings, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations. We also remain committed to helping customers live more sustainably in the home and garden, and we are proud of the role we play in supporting local communities to make a positive difference through small but impactful actions.

Climate and energy solutions

Bunnings recognises that business has an important part to play in reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change.

Bunnings has a target to achieve 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2025 – and achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.

Significant progress was made towards achieving these targets during the financial year. The progress is largely attributed to new long-term renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs).

In 2022, Bunnings commenced new long-term renewable power purchase agreements for its large sites in Victoria and South Australia. A new renewable electricity contract was also executed for small

sites across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. In New Zealand, all sites continue to be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Since 2014, Bunnings has been installing rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across our Australian store network to grow local electricity generation of renewable power, to help achieve this target. This year, a milestone was celebrated with the installation of the 100th solar PV rooftop system on the Palmerston Warehouse store in the Northern Territory. As of 30 June 2023,127 solar PV systems were installed on Bunnings stores across Australia, generating the equivalent energy required to power over 7,000 Australian households for one year.

With the help of onsite solar PV systems, renewable power purchase agreements and the broader emissions reduction program, over 60 percent of the Bunnings network is now powered by renewable electricity.

Circular solutions for a positive impact

Bunnings launched a new plastic plant pot reuse and recycling program in October 2022 at selected stores across Victoria, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, Western Australia and 21

Australian Stores

New Zealand. The program is currently available at over 80 store locations across Australia and New Zealand.

Through this program, customers can return used plant packaging made from polypropylene plastic (PP5) for reuse and recycling, including plant pots and stakes. To promote reuse, returned items are also made available to customers free of charge.

Given that many local council recycling facilities cannot accept polypropylene packaging for recycling, Bunnings are proud to offer a circular solution to customers to continue making a positive impact.

Australian Stores New Zealand Stores

Since launching in November 2021, Bunnings’ battery recycling program has played an important role in our commitment to deliver solutions to create less waste and recycle more. The program, available across Australia and New Zealand, makes it convenient for customers and tradies to drop off used household and power tool batteries.

As of 30 June 2023, Bunnings was proud to celebrate having collected over 240 tonnes of batteries for recycling. That’s the equivalent of over ten million AA batteries! We are thrilled to have achieved this together with our communities.

Responsible timber sourcing

Bunnings is committed to ensuring all timber and wood products originate from legal and well-managed forest operations.

As part of this long-held commitment, Bunnings requires all natural forest timber products to be independently certified to Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) or another equivalent standard, in line with the Bunnings’ Responsible Timber Sourcing Policy.

Sustainable packaging

As a member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), Bunnings continues to reduce excess product packaging, improve packaging design for recovery and reduce the use of packaging materials which are difficult for customers to recycle.

Bunnings Sustainable Packaging Guidelines support our team and suppliers to accelerate the transition to sustainable packaging. Bunnings continues to include the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) on product packaging to help customers dispose of packaging correctly, with the ARL applied to over 1,000 additional products in the Bunnings range during the financial year.

Bunnings continues to conduct due diligence to monitor timber supplier performance. A Responsible Timber Sourcing Survey is conducted quarterly by suppliers of new timber, wood or fibre products to Bunnings to capture the timber species, country of harvest, forest type, country of manufacture, applicable timber certification, and product claims.

FightMND partnership reaches five-year milestone

During May and June, Bunnings supported FightMND for the fifth consecutive year, in their efforts to find a cure for motor neurone disease, helping to raise and contribute over $1.5 million through the sale of more than 60,000 beanies. Beanies were sold in all Australian stores and trade centres, and via the Bunnings website.

Over 67,000 bags collected for Share the Dignity

In the lead up to Christmas, the Australian team supported Share the Dignity’s ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign for the sixth consecutive year.

Over two weeks, more than 67,000 bags filled with essential items were collected for women and girls experiencing homelessness and domestic violence. The bags were distributed to women and girls in need across Australia, helping to brighten their festive season.

Bunnings has partnered with The Clontarf Foundation for many years. The Clontarf Foundation aims to improve the outcomes of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.

This year Bunnings has had the privilege of supporting Clontarf at events such as the Clontarf Career Days, Billy Cart race events and Employment Forums as well as welcoming many Clontarf students as they have transitioned to Bunnings team members across the country.

Appeal supports domestic violence survivors

Since 2020, Bunnings has been a proud supporter of I Got Your Back Pack’s (IGYBP) annual appeal with customers and team donating over 8,000 items of toiletries and toys to support survivors of domestic violence with emergency care packs.

As a team we are passionate about helping IGYBP to support people in the community who are having a challenging time. The annual appeal means the organisation will be able to provide even more free care packs to domestic violence services, hospitals, police and social services to help New Zealanders in need.

Movember support in NZ

In November, the New Zealand team partnered with Movember to release a limited edition, co-branded black hoodie, available from Bunnings stores nationwide. The partnership built on existing work with Movember which has a grassroots focus on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate and testicular cancer.

The campaign raised and contributed $63,000 donated directly to Movember to allow them to expand their support in the community.

Helping hand for women's sporting clubs

In partnership with New Zealand Rugby, Bunnings Rugby Assist was launched for the second year. Ten grassroots rugby clubs from throughout Aoteraroa/ New Zealand were named as the 2022 recipients and each received $30,000 to put towards upgrading their facilities for the benefit of the women’s game. Along with the funds to put towards Bunnings products and materials, each winner received a helping hand from the local team.

Bunnings Trade proud to partner with

MATES

In September, Bunnings Trade partnered with industry-based suicide prevention charity MATES in Construction (MATES). To help raise awareness and vital funds, Bunnings Trade Australia, for the first time, co-branded a black version of their iconic ‘Bunnings Trade Hoodie’ with MATES, which was available in-store only, at all Bunnings Trade desks and Trade Centres.

Bunnings raised and contributed $500,000 from the hoodie sales to MATES to allow them to expand their reach in suicide prevention for the construction industry across Australia.

The Bunnings Helping Hand program also returned for the third consecutive year, in partnership with the AFL. The program assisted local football clubs to build and upgrade female-friendly facilities to make them inclusive for women and girls and help grow the game at a local level. In 2022, the Helping Hand Program provided $200,000 to 10 football clubs across Australia with many of our store teams lending their support to help clubs with upgrading their facilities.

Bunnings helps Legacy celebrate centenary

Bunnings is proud to support Legacy’s Centenary celebrations in 2023 with fundraising opportunities in stores and activations at community family days as part of the worldwide torch relay centenary event.

The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay pays homage to and acknowledges veterans’ families, saluting their sacrifice. We were proud to have many team members from our Bunnings family participating.

In Townsville and across the country, our stores teamed up to donate a BBQ and run activities at the Legacy Centenary Community Days.
