Welcome!

ehind the scenes on a photo shoot often means early starts, late finishes and endless logistics. Our festive-light shoot was all of those, but grappling with an inflatable gingerbread house or a smiling octopus pre-dawn is up there with coffee as a mood lifter. I can hand-on-heart say there’s something for everyone in the range this year. Most is solar powered and, from delicate fairy lights to a rocking Santa, they set the scene for Christmas, the lead-up and the balmy nights beyond. Getting lighting right is important and we address the ins and outs (or is it ons and offs?) in our design

guide (page 66). It’s also an important element in the journey from street to front door (page 52), and should be treated as seriously as paving, planting and other features. Have fun setting up for the festive season,

Each November, Share the Dignity calls on Australians to help ensure women and girls spending Christmas in domestic violence refuges, homeless shelters or living in poverty receive basic essentials through their ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign. Drop a handbag filled with essentials at any Bunnings store from Friday November 10 until Sunday November 26, 2023. Find out what to donate here: sharethedignity.org.au. bunnings.com.au |

This non-corrosive product can remove dirt, mould, grease and smoke stains from grout, floors, painted surfaces and more. Try it to make your home shine before the upcoming party season. Protect stone and pome fruit, citrus, passionfruit, figs and fruiting vegies, 1 such as tomato and eggplant, from Queensland and Mediterranean fruit flies. Use traps, netting sleeves and sprays.

To check the quality of your potting mix, look for the ticks. Five white ticks on a black or red background on the bag show the mix meets the Australian Standard™ for quality. All bags of potting mix sold in store adhere to these standards. Black ticks indicate a ‘regular’ mix and confirm basic manufacturing and quality standards have been met. Red ticks show ‘premium’ quality; the mix typically contains wetting agents and fertilisers and is pH-controlled to guarantee plant growth over the first few months.

A

re you ready to party? This holiday season, we’re in the mood to get creative with our celebration spaces and declare more is more. For a front-yard display with wow factor, jumbo twinkling lollipops are hard to beat – bet your neighbours will never guess they’re a crafty hack using $2 pool noodles! Humble hessian, a textile normally used for sacking, can also be put to use forming beautifully textured, outsized bows. But, of course, the hero has to be the lighting display. Keep your budget manageable by choosing a single colour scheme (we used Warm White) for maximum impact, and opting for solar powered where possible.

here are lots of simple ways to transform your deck from boring to beautiful. Start by taking a good look at your space. Has it had a style bypass? Is the layout impractical or does it feel less than welcoming? Perhaps it’s short on privacy, bakes in the sun or has an aspect that’s not so appealing. All of these things can be overcome. Engage your inner stylist

A style lift might be as simple as rearranging the furniture. Position your lounge seating so it overlooks a pretty garden view or arrange it so your sofa and chairs are facing each other, ready for conversation. Introduce an outdoor rug and add comfy cushions and cosy throws for cooler nights. Bring in side tables to make the area functional and stock the space with solar-powered lanterns for ambience after dark.

Dining delight

Make your dining table a drawcard. Place it away from the barbecue so cooking fumes aren’t a nuisance, and at right angles so the fewest people possible are facing the cookzone, 22 bunnings.com.au |

leaving enough room around the table so guests can move their seating in and out easily. Add seat pads for comfort, introduce a colourful tablecloth, bring in stylish tableware and arrange greenery in pots down the table’s centre as a visual link to the garden.

Throw some shade

Sun protection is a must for alfresco entertaining. Umbrellas are a quick fix but a shade sail with high UV protection provides a summer-long solution, says DIY specialist Natasha Dickins (littleredindustries.com). “Buy one with reinforced holes for faster and safer installation,” she says. “Ensure they’re stretched out to prevent sagging and flapping and

avoid attaching to wobbly fences, gutters or downpipes, or directly onto roofing.” Each corner requires a solid anchor point to the house wall or posts that have been secured to the ground. “For smaller, ready-to-hang kits, run ropes to an established tree, a stable fence or posts,” says Natasha.

Screen it

If you want privacy or to obscure an ugly view, try a screening panel or two. They come in a range of materials and colours, often with proprietary fixing kits, and if you’re handy on the tools, they’re a straightforward DIY project. They need to be attached securely – bolted to an exterior wall, screwed to a solid fence or fixed to concreted posts.

But the last thing you want, come January, is to dismantle your festive array and find your walls are a mess, thanks to the over-enthusiastic use of sticky tape or drawing pins. So, love your home and give yourself an early Christmas present: a selection of Command™ hooks and clips. They stick fast but peel off cleanly – no marks, no holes! – and work on all kinds of surfaces to hang lights, Christmas cards, tinsel and much more. They’re transparent so your decorations – and not the fixings – will shine. And once you’ve taken them down, it’ll be as if they were never there, making them perfect for renters. If you’re the type of festive decorator who likes to go big or go home, the Command™ celebrations hooks value pack is for you. This 52-piece assortment of hooks and clips will have your twinkly trinkets arranged in no time. Use them to string paper garlands across the hallway, to display a gallery of Christmas cards or to hang a selection of the kids’ creations. Command™ adhesive decorating clips come in packs of 20 or 40 and are perfect for lightweight items. Try making a Christmas tree on a blank wall using a string or two of fairy lights and some glittering baubles, or hang an array of homemade paper snowflakes across a window. Command™ mini adhesive hooks are also a great choice for lightweight decor; arrange them in a pattern to string bunting or paper streamers across your walls. Need to hang something weightier? Try Command™ medium adhesive wall hooks, which can hold up to 900g each – that’s your wreath-hanging solution right there. Or use them to hang stockings, run festive foliage up the banisters, or even strings of curtain lights for a wealth of after-dark sparkle.

treated pine that can be stained or painted. “Buy pre-cut treads to fit the stringers, or cut timber to match them to the same material as the deck,” adds Natasha. “Any set of stairs more than a metre from the ground – or four risers high – requires a handrail to meet Australian building codes.”

Create a nature zone

Some insects you want around your outdoor room, some you don’t. Potted plants can help. “To attract butterflies, plant nectar-rich flowers like buddleja, salvia, hardenbergia, bottlebrush and native violets. Mass plant for best results,” suggests Tammy. “To help repel mozzies, include aromatic plants like lemongrass, basil, marigold, lemon balm and catnip,” she adds.

planters lining the deck edge, says horticulturist Tammy Huynh (leafan impression.com.au). “If you have the opportunity to plant a garden border, do it, as that will give you more deck space,” she suggests. If using planters on a timber deck, Tammy advises using drip trays teamed with pot feet. ”So if you do overwater (or there’s a big storm), water doesn’t pool under the tray,” she says.

Design a garden corner

If you’re a green thumb, include a workspace in a convenient corner of the deck. It’s brilliant for sowing seeds, potting up seedlings and propagating. 24 bunnings.com.au |

Park a ready-made potting bench – or repurpose an old table – in a spot undercover and out of the elements so you can use it year-round. Keep tools and garden chemicals out of the reach of children and be aware of potential watering issues – use pot saucers so there isn’t a continuous drip from your plants onto your timber boards.

Connect to the garden

Steps down to the lawn make a great statement feature. “For a low deck, ready-made stringers are a simple solution that screw into the side of the deck,” says Natasha Dickins. They come in powdercoated steel or

Never underestimate the power of twinkly lights, says Marianne Zagaras, creative director of Lytworx. Retrofit solar deck lights around the edges of your deck or pop solar stake lights in among the border plantings. “Create a suspended ceiling of softly glowing twinkling lights with solar-powered net lights,” says Marianne. “Or, if you need to section off a space but want it to feel open, use curtain lights to provide a gently illuminated wall.” Up the entertaining vibe with colour-changing party festoons. “Team them with disco balls, multicoloured fairy lights and colour-changing flameless candles for a spectacular experience!” she says. Just remember any hardwired lighting must be installed by a licensed electrician.

WATER-WISE CHOICES

READY FOR SUMMER CREATE A GARDEN THAT CAN TOUGH IT OUT WHEN THE HEAT IS ON Words ROGER FOX

T

he words ‘long hot summer’ are a worry for every gardener, but with the reality of a warmer climate, it’s a case of adapting to the new environment and facing the challenges head-on. The key to creating a sustainable summer garden is two pronged. Firstly, choose the right plants – the toughies that can tolerate hot temperatures and minimum watering. And secondly, make sure the water you do apply to your garden gets to where it’s needed most – the root zone – and stays there for as long as possible.

Start with the soil

The best building block for a sustainable garden is healthy soil, full of organic matter which helps retain moisture. Start by digging in plenty of compost and cow manure, then apply a soil-wetting agent to all areas of the garden, to ensure water absorbs properly and doesn’t just run off the surface or straight through. Soil wetters break down the water-repellent layer that can develop on the soil surface, and help attract and hold moisture around the soil particles down in the root zone. Horticulturist Angie Thomas at Yates advises, “To make the most of any rainfall or watering, apply a soil wetter over the lawn and garden beds.” bunnings.com.au |

Plant for the heat

There’s a wide range of plants that can survive and thrive in hot, dry climates, and lots of them are native to Australia. Whether you’re replanting just one bed, landscaping a whole new garden or adding flowering pots to the scene, there’s a native species for the task. When planning a hedge, consider using Westringia ‘Aussie Box’ or Leptospermum ‘Fore Shore’ as alternatives to exotic hedge species. For flowerbeds, plants like kangaroo paws and paper daisies put on a fabulous display of heat-hardy blooms. In pots and troughs, try fan flowers (Scaevola spp.) or Swan River daisies (Brachyscome spp). For trees, shrubs and climbers, check out native plant websites for inspiration. Another ideal group of plants for hot, dry climates is succulents. From tall varieties like the tree aloe, down to ground-hugging species like echeverias, they add great impact to a garden and will survive on the most meagre of water rations. Just as tough, and with lots of spiky attitude, are the cactus species, which range in size from tall to tiny. One standout is the golden barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii), which makes a striking statement in any sun-drenched garden bed.

To maintain a waterwise garden through summer, water early in the morning or at dusk when evaporation is at its lowest. Water use restrictions vary around the country, so always check your local regulations. In areas where irrigation systems are permitted, go for drip systems over sprays – they are more efficient and direct the water to where it’s needed most. To reduce your garden water use, there is another vital tool at your disposal: mulch. It insulates the soil, shielding it from hot sun and wind and keeping the moisture trapped beneath. “Mulch is your friend during hot or dry weather,” says Angie Thomas. “It helps keep the soil cooler and reduces evaporation.” For best results, use an organic mulch product like pea straw or lucerne, spreading it over the soil about 4-5cm deep. You’ll need to top it up periodically, as it breaks down. 40 bunnings.com.au |

Remember that shady zones are important in gardens, too, to protect less robust plants which can sizzle in the hot summer sun. If your garden is short on shade, try planting clusters of native shrubs and small trees, such as wattles, to act as sun shields for your tender plants, especially along west-facing boundaries which catch the afternoon sun. You can also use shadecloth to screen your annuals, fruit and vegies – like tomatoes, leafy greens and any new seedlings – so they don’t get scorched. When it comes to pots, put them under awnings or umbrellas, or move them to a shady south-facing location.

It includes tools and accessories for a variety of garden tasks, and the products are made for Australians and Australian conditions. So your offering is just about guaranteed to make your green-fingered friends’ list of all-time favourite gifts! Here’s a small selection to inspire you.

GROWING ESSENTIALS Every gardener needs a good pair of gloves to defend against dirt, bugs, prickles and more. Flexitec Gloves are made from synthetic leather for

toughness and stretch fabric to ensure a good, comfortable fit. A bonus? Touchscreen-friendly finger pads let you google your plant queries without having to remove your gloves. Chances are your green thumb will have a hand tool or two, but nothing could be nicer than finding a stylish new collection like the three-piece Garden Hand Tool Set under the tree. This is also an ideal pick for those just starting out on their growing journey. The boxed set consists of a hand fork, garden trowel and weeder, and each stainless steel tool has smooth timber handles that sit nicely in the palm, with a leather strap to hang them neatly away when not in use.

BRILLIANT ACCESSORIES The Foldable Seat Kneeler is one gift that gardeners might not know they want until they unwrap it. Open up the sturdy steel frame for a comfortable seat from which to tackle tasks like pruning, or close it again to use the thick padded seat as a kneeler for weeding or planting. It has a clever pocket too, to keep hand tools right where they’re needed. Anything that makes weeding less of a trial is going to be greeted with open arms by keen gardeners. The Extract Weeder removes weeds from beds and lawns without the need for bending or kneeling, which will earn you serious brownie points from any recipient.

CONSERVING RESOURCES

Water service professional Julian Fyfe says, while using rainwater for drinking is discouraged, a rainwater tank will more than likely allow you to replace all the mains water you use flushing the toilet and in the laundry. And tank water may just save your garden when the heat is on.

Which tank?

LIQUID GOLD COLLECTING WATER AND USING IT WISELY CAN HELP SEE YOU AND YOUR GARDEN SAFELY THROUGH SUMMER Words JEN WALKER

S

ummers are predicted to get hotter and drier. And with water restrictions a possibility in many parts of Australia this season, capturing and making good use of water makes great sense. Collecting rainfall in a water tank is a smart first step in urban areas (and usually essential for regional zones), maximising every drop as well as easing your water bills. The benefits don’t end at your hip pocket, either – water tanks can help reduce run-off, which in turn protects our stormwater drains and waterways. bunnings.com.au |

bunnings |

bunnings |

When choosing a new tank, match supply to your demand, says Julian. “There’s no point getting a 20,000 litre tank if you’re not going to use all that water,” he says. “Think about your climate (the wetter it is, the less you need to store), what you’re planning to use it for and the roof area you’ll be collecting from.” Figuring out the best-size tank for your property requires a bit of maths. Horticulture and sustainability specialist Adam Woodhams explains, “One millimetre of rain falling on one square metre of roof is one litre of water. You will never collect 100 per cent of fallen rain due to splashing and overrun, but knowing this figure is useful for doing a rough calculation of how much you have the potential to capture.” Adam then follows with this equation to help choose the right size of tank. “The maths is simple: annual rainfall for your area, multiplied by roof area to be connected, equals potential annual maximum,” he says. “For example: 1000mm x 50sqm = 50,000L. This means that, even with regular use, a 5,000 or 10,000L tank would provide consistent supply as it would likely be regularly topped up.” To get the most bang for your buck, Julian suggests you connect the tank to your toilet and laundry. “That way, you have a constant drawdown of the water – you don’t want it just sitting there,” he says. “But if you’re also planning to use it for the garden and you’re in a drier area, then the bigger the tank the better.” The ideal tank material depends on its use and location. Plastic models come in a variety of shapes, but Julian says steel tanks are more suitable for storing more than 10,000L. Underground tanks are usually concrete. bunnings |

Where to put it

Slimline designs and colours can make new tanks a landscaping asset. However, Julian Fyfe advises checking with your council for planning controls, such as the tank must not be visible from the street. Other factors include not placing it under trees and sealing it to prevent animals getting in. “Lower temperatures help inhibit biological growth in the water, so tanks are better placed in the shade,” Julian says. Consider the weight, too: 1,000 litres of water weighs one tonne. You need to ensure the tank has a level, stable and strong base, such as concrete.

Useful extras

Once you have decided on your tank, a first flush diverter is an important addition – this sends the ‘first flush’ of rainwater away from your tank, to help prevent debris washing in. You may also require a pump, says Julian. “If you’ll be watering your garden with a watering can, the pressure will be okay, but you will need a pump if you’re connecting the tank to indoors,” he says. Julian recommends a pressure vessel (a cylinder that sits over the head of the pump), so when someone turns the tap, the accumulated pressure pushes the water through the tank, so the pump doesn’t have to constantly turn on and off. “This protects the pump and your pipes by reducing ‘water hammer’, and stops your pipes potentially leaking and breaking,” he says. 46 bunnings.com.au |

bunnings |

A gift for the garden

Plants and soil seem to respond better to natural water than town water, and Adam Woodhams says there are a few reasons why. The pH of rainwater is likely a better balance – though that can be changed by atmospheric pollution – and it is more likely to contain beneficial elements such as nitrogen, an essential plant nutrient. Adam explains that a thunderstorm allows atmospheric nitrogen to mix with water and oxygen, turning raindrops into a light, liquid feed. “This is why gardens and lawns often look so lush after a thunderstorm,” he says. Your rainwater might pick up some less beneficial additions, however. “If you are in a built-up area or an area of high pollution, I would recommend that you have a basic filter attached to your tank to remove potential contaminants like lead, which may otherwise end up concentrated in the soil,” cautions Adam. “Especially if you are growing food plants.”

Keep in mind… n Contact your local council and water authority

to find out whether you need approval to install a tank on your property. In some jurisdictions, installing a rainwater system may be required when you build or renovate. Government rebates may be available to help you invest. n Where a public water supply is available, health authorities generally recommend using it for drinking and cooking, and restricting rainwater strictly to non-drinking uses such as garden irrigation, flushing the toilet and washing clothes. n Any plumbing or hardwired electrical work must be carried out by a licensed tradie.

A slimline tank system is a great option for an underused, shady spot against the boundary

You’ve done the work to collect all that precious rainwater, now make sure not a single drop is wasted. Adam Woodhams recommends adding tap timers to all taps, tank or otherwise. “This is a simple way to conserve water,” he says. There are a few options to consider. Manual tap timer This lowtech option has a mechanical dial dictating how long the tap will run, automatically switching off the water at the end of that period. Digital tap timer A gadget that allows you to control both the duration of watering and when the water runs. This means you can schedule a dawn watering – to maximise absorption and minimise evaporation – without getting out of bed. Smart tap timer This is a digital tap timer with more. Connected to an app, it gives you control from anywhere, with greater precision, and can be linked to the local weather service, so your irrigation won’t switch on if rain is forecast. Even better, you can link it to compatible moisture sensors and smart weather stations, for a watering schedule that’s tailored to your garden’s unique needs.

Andrew Miller at Hy-Clor suggests scooping out large pieces of debris, followed by brushing the walls and floor and vacuuming. “The process should also involve emptying out the skimmer and pool pump baskets, and checking if the filter needs a backwash, or if the cartridge element needs cleaning,” says Andrew. Inspecting the plumbing for leaks or corrosion is also a good idea. For steel-framed above-ground PVC pools and spas, which may have been packed away over winter, Mark Rushton of Bestway advises giving the liner a gentle scrub with soapy water and rinsing before assembly.

Do a safety audit

Give the pool area a full safety check. Survey the fence to ensure there are no gaps bigger than 100mm, and test that self-latching gates have no issues or obstructions. “A minimum 900mm ‘Non Climbable Zone’ is required outside the pool fence and at least 300mm from the inside of the fence, so give nearby trees a trim to ensure they remain non-climbable, and check for potentially hazardous outdoor furniture or equipment in the vicinity,” says Mark. Consult your relevant state or territory government for a compliance checklist.

Pillars of strength

F

itting timber posts is an integral part of many building jobs, such as installing decking and pergolas. Whether you’re a confident DIY-er or a professional tradie working for a client, you want to do the best job possible, so using quality support fittings is, of course, essential. However, the reality is that many support fittings look pretty clunky, spoiling the graceful lines of the timber. Wouldn’t it be nice if those fittings were sturdy and simple to use, but also delivered a smart, clean finish? Say hello to the VUEPRO PROBOLT. Ideal for a range of uses, including

timber-to-timber connections, it’s zinc-nickel coated and has a concealed thread thanks to its clever male-female bolt design. Once in place, all you’ll see are the PROBOLT’s discreet end caps with their T50 drive head – no washer needed, no exposed thread or nut, and no need to trim excess bolt metal. The PROBOLT comes in M10 and M12 widths and sizes to suit 90-110mm and 110-150mm posts. The next step to a neatly installed timber post is combining the PROBOLT with the T-Blade Post Support. This tough, galvanised steel bracket bolts into concrete

and features a 10mm blade that slots snugly into the base of the post, with just a discreet line of metal visible. T-Blades are available in 80mm x 80mm, 110mm x 110mm, 140mm x 140mm and 180mm x 180mm sizes to fit a broad range of posts. So far, so good, but you can give the job an even sleeker finish by adding a stainless steel T-Blade Post Support Cap to hide the base fixings. Slide it onto the T-Blade bracket, secure the post with the correct size of PROBOLTs, and there you have it – a stylish job that shows off the beauty of the timber, and not the fittings.

THE RIGHT PATH

W

e all know the value of putting your best face forward, and the view of your home from the kerb leaves an indelible first impression. Continue the warm welcome with an engaging stroll from footpath to front door that will leave your guests surprised and delighted, and make coming home a joy for you and your family, too.

Start at the beginning

The first step is to clearly mark where the journey begins, says landscape architect Brayden Murrihy of Ian Barker Gardens (landscape.net.au). “Having a clear transition from the footpath to an entry path is essential,” he says. “This is usually achieved through the transition of materials and by using structural elements, like letterboxes, gates and hedges.” There are so many options here: a pair of pillars, a striking freestanding letterbox, a recessed front gate or a matching pair of topiary shrubs. Larger features, such as an archway, can look beautiful in the right setting, as long as they don’t detract from the house. Horticulturist Tammy Huynh (leafanimpression. com.au) suggests softening the effect of an archway with a lush climber. “Look for something evergreen so the arch is always covered with some form of greenery,” she says. “Hardenbergia, honeysuckle, wonga wonga vine, star jasmine, clematis (evergreen forms) and orange trumpet vines are ideal candidates, or passionfruit if you’d like an edible choice. If you’re willing to have bare branches over winter, then wisteria and climbing roses are well worth it.”

On the right track

Do you want to take guests on a scenic route to the front door or a direct line from A to B? The question of straight versus curved paths largely comes down to the style of your home, says Brayden. “With a classic freestanding home, particularly one that’s symmetrical, we would prefer a straight path that runs directly towards the front door, whereas in a more asymmetrical house you may have more of a curved or staggered path that can lead differently through the front garden,” he says. When deciding on materials, draw inspiration from your house – its style and era, and the colours and materials. “For example, bluestone paving traditionally pairs well with a redbrick home, whereas lighter granite can be more suitable for a lighter home, such as a light grey weatherboard,” says Brayden. bunnings.com.au |

“Light up a space like a candlelit dinner rather than the MCG with low-level path lights”

ABOVE Gravel is a cost-effective choice for this path, between these productive beds filled with herbs and vegetables

Gravel looks lovely and gives a satisfying crunch underfoot, but be aware that it will get tracked into the house. If you do choose this cost-effective solution, contain the gravel with metal, brick or timber edging – as with all path materials, neat edges make all the difference. A solid path is the most common choice, but stepping stones or pavers with plants between them can make a path look like a more organic addition to the garden, says Tammy Huynh. “Using different hardscaping materials can also help navigate the journey through to the front door; such as stepping stones to a solid tiled landing to help give a sense of arrival,” she says.

provide movement and a sense of dynamism to the garden,” she says. Strategically chosen border plants along path edges can add a new dimension to the garden experience – grasses rustle in the breeze, while brushing against a row of lavender or rosemary releases an inviting fragrance. Consider what can be seen from the path as well. The front garden is a fantastic place to create a scene, whether it’s a blowsy bed of flowers, a tall sculpture or a statement tree. Tammy recommends “cloud-pruned juniper, Japanese maple or Chinese redbud to provide guests with a visual delight.”

Green scene

Safety is paramount, so good lighting should be high on the list of must-haves. But this doesn’t mean the place has to be floodlit. “We like to use low-level path lights along an entry path and on key travel areas, such as steps leading to the house’s entrance,” says Brayden Murrihy. Evenly spaced bollards clearly light the way. Or use plantings to soften the effect – lights set amid border plantings

As with any part of the garden, hardscaping is only half the story. You can soften path edges with greenery, choosing plants that match your home and the mood you’re trying to create, explains Tammy. “A traditional home lends itself beautifully to tightly clipped box hedges, but the formality can also be softened by mass-planting ornamental grasses, which 54 bunnings.com.au |

Water features evoke a wonderful sense of calm

or a spotlight set high in a tree will cast a becoming mix of diffuse light and shadow across a path. If stronger lighting is needed to navigate a tricky path, consider sensor lights, but make sure they won’t be triggered by anyone walking past on the footpath outside your gate. Solar lights are an easy DIY option, but bear in mind any hardwired lighting must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Sensory additions

To make the stroll to the front door a truly immersive experience, think outside the garden design box. Outdoor speakers are an off-beat inclusion that you can use to pipe relaxing tunes or even birdsong. Or, for the real deal, consider adding bird-attracting plants to your garden scheme. “I’d recommend nectar-rich natives like bottle brush, callistemon or banksia – you can find one in virtually any size to suit your space,” says Tammy Huynh. “A flowering gum (Corymbia ficifolia) is perfect too, and makes a stunning statement tree.” Working in a water feature is another way to add aesthetic and auditory delight. “Water helps create a visual feature as you walk in and when you’re waiting at the door,” says Brayden Murrihy. “If you have moving water, the sound can help diffuse traffic or other surrounding neighbourhood noise, too.”

PREPARE FOR HOLIDAY SUCCESS WITH THESE MUST-HAVE PRODUCTS FOR YOUR NEXT CAMPING TRIP

S

ummer is here and the great outdoors is calling. Now is the time for making memories, reconnecting with family and friends, and getting back to nature – it’s camping season! Aussies love a camping holiday and there’s nothing like the simple pleasures of sleeping under the stars, waking to birdsong, and living off what you can fit in a backpack (or the boot of the car). Whether you’re an ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ holidaymaker or a minimalist camper, there are a few products that should always be top of your packing list. Tick off these seven super useful items and set yourself up for the best camping holiday ever.

1

CAMPING ESSENTIALS

3

First light

Whether you’re heading off on an outdoor adventure or stocking the breakdown kit for the car, one of the first items on your list should be powerful and reliable light sources. The Energizer lantern combines durable construction with a long run time and variable light settings, from powerful illumination for tricky tasks to an ambient glow for evening chats and stargazing, or ‘night light mode’, a low diffused light you can leave on all night. Plus, you can use it to charge devices via a USB port. Energizer 1000 lumen USB area lantern, $59, I/N: 0104010

2

Focused illumination

A reliable, high-performance head torch is a must-have tool for at home and away, giving you bright light exactly where you need it while keeping your hands free. The Energizer Vision Ultra HD rechargeable headlight shines bright light on objects up to 80 metres away and includes red and green LEDs to preserve night vision for outdoor activities. It also features versatile modes and dimming technology.

By torchlight

A grab-and-go torch should always have a place in your camping kit. Choose one that you can trust in an emergency – even if it’s only used for finding your way to the ablution block or for the kids to play spotlight. With a durable aircraft-grade aluminium body, powerful 600-lumen beam and up to 30 hours run time, the Energizer Tac rechargeable torch is the one you want tucked in your backpack. Energizer ‘Tac’ 600lm rechargeable torch, $75, I/N: 0353904

4

Buzz off

Biting, itching, swarming insects are the bane of campers, and they have the potential to ruin your long-awaited family holiday. Tell those pesky bugs where to go by packing a safe and effective repellent, such as OFF! Camping and Fishing insect repellent spray. This essential spray is designed to keep at bay mosquitoes, fleas, sandflies, ticks and other biting insects that threaten to crash your camping party. Like all OFF! repellents in Australia, OFF! Camping and Fishing is DEET free, containing picaridin instead, which is equally effective but has a cleaner feeling on skin and won’t damage clothing. It’s gentle on skin, non-greasy and, best of all, suitable for children aged 12 months and over, so you can pack one product to protect the whole family.

OFF! ‘Camping and Fishing’ insect repellent spray, $10.90, I/N: 0524965

As all good scouts know, you should always be prepared. The same guideline applies to family holidays and road trips – expect the unexpected and equip yourself accordingly. The easiest and most lightweight way to prepare for every eventuality is with a pocket knife. The Victorinox Super Tinker pocket knife has 14 functions tucked into its neat little body, including a Phillips head screwdriver, scissors, small and large blades, and a multipurpose hook.

6

Pocket MacGyver

For even more functionality, switch up to the Victorinox Swiss Champ tool pocket knife. This compact all-rounder has 33 functions including a ruler, tweezers, multiple screwdrivers, a fish scaler and hook disgorger, magnifying glass, wire cutters, bottle opener, corkscrew and so much more. It’s the perfect companion for the outback bushman or backyard adventurer, making indoor and outdoor life easier, one job at a time.

7

Tiny but brilliant

When trouble strikes in the evening or night, it’s a good idea to have a hands-free light at the ready. For a head torch that’s easy to slip into a pocket and carry at all times, look to the Nebo ‘Mycro’ headlamp. This tiny light punches above its weight, delivering 400 lumens of bright light, with red and green light mode, and an adjustable tilt so you can focus light exactly where you want it. It’s USB chargeable and waterproof (IP67), making it ideal for tackling almost any camping task, rain or shine. Nebo ‘Mycro’ 400lm headlamp, $44.63, I/N: 0353859

HOME ILLUMINATION

THE BRIGHT STUFF CREATE A STUNNING LIGHTING SCHEME, INDOORS AND OUT, WITH THE LATEST DESIGNS Words JANE PARBURY

T

he basic rules of home lighting are untouched by time or trends: you will always need task lighting for things like cooking and reading; ambient lighting for overall illumination; and accent lighting to pick out features such as artworks. But a runway of downlights or a single bulb in the bedroom is no longer enough for a considered scheme, says Bunnings trend and design manager Jane Wright. “Lighting is so much more than a functional light source. It helps to tell the story of your interior design,” she says. This is also true outdoors, where lighting has the potential to make your garden as inviting after dark as it is during the day. Georgia Liversage at Holman says, “Depending on the style, size and requirements of your outdoor space, lighting designs can range from simple to spectacular.” We’re bringing you the latest styles and ideas for beautiful lighting in and around your home.

INDOOR INTEREST

Photography (top right) Lisa Cohen stying Bree Leech/Dulux Australia; (top left) Getty Images; (below) Renee Hunt @coastal.hills.haven; (opposite) James Moffatt, styling Samantha Pointon. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.

Function and form

When planning your scheme, minimise the number of downlights, says Jane: “Instead, layer lighting using pendants, floor and table lamps, wall sconces and recessed LEDs.” Table and floor lamps that cast a directional glow can double as task and accent lighting, while pendants that shine downwards can work as task lights and an overall light source. Rachel Holmes, Bunnings national buyer for indoor lighting, suggests, “Look for scale with your pendants to create intimate lighting scapes, as well as important task lighting.” Wall lights are also multi-taskers. “They can create focal points as bedside lights or highlighting artworks or mirrors, and bring a sense of welcome to hallways,” says Rachel.

Style matters

Eye-catching designs provide the ultimate style statement. “Lamps are trending, in organic shapes and ceramic finishes with a mid-century vibe,” says Rachel. “In pendants, brass and glass lift decor and work well in modern and classic homes, while timber, rattan and fabric pendants are ever popular for coastal and Scandi themes.” Many lighting ranges work in style ‘families’, so you can link your entry hall feature pendant to your multi-light living room pendant, adds Rachel: “Coordinate by using the same materials

– such as all rattan, or all brass and black.” Beyond aesthetics, Jane forecasts an increased focus on integrated lighting effects. “Integrated accents of lighting are evolving within furniture and decor,” she says. “Lit-up vases, mirrors, shelves, planters and bookends deliver warmth.” Strip lights running along shelving or around the base of a kitchen island can bring the vibe. For renters, DIY pendants can be fitted into an existing batten-fix socket, and some plug-in wall lights just require mounting.

Tech talk

Home automation is getting smarter, allowing users to control the intensity and colour of their lighting through mobile apps or voice command. Smart tech also lets you control lights remotely or create and save customised lighting ‘scenes’. The Arlec Home Automation team suggests setting up a ‘cooking’ scene that provides bright, task-oriented lighting in the kitchen; when cooking is finished, the lights can easily be dimmed using voice control. Other benefits include scheduling lights to turn on or off at specific times or monitoring your energy usage. “Smart lighting can be easily integrated with other non-smart devices in your home, while some systems have adaptive features that adjust the colour and intensity of light to mimic natural daylight patterns,” suggests the Arlec team.

OUTDOOR EFFECTS Glow-up guidelines

Garden lighting ‘rules’ are similar to those indoors, insofar as you need decent lighting for tasks like barbecuing and safe navigation around the garden – consider spotlights for over the barbecue and slimline bollards to light pathways and changes of level. Overall illumination is good for entertaining zones, while accent lighting lets you pick out elements such as feature trees. Georgia Liversage suggests sketching an outdoor lighting plan as a starting point. “Build your plan around features you want to accentuate, creating viewing points,” she says. “Light key areas, not empty spaces, and consider the power of contrast.” Think about security, too – motionsensor floodlights are a good solution for this.

True colours

Smart talk

Technology is blossoming in garden lighting, too. “You can have complete control of your outdoor lights from anywhere in the world with a smart controller, as long as you have a wi-fi connection,” says Georgia. “Use the app to set smart automations, such as engaging the lights to turn on when the sun is setting, and turn off when it rises.” 68 bunnings.com.au |

Outdoor lighting is taking cues from indoor fixtures in both style and use to create an inviting, cohesive scheme. Think strip lighting under steps or feature wall lights casting a soft wash of illumination over a textured surface. Increasingly, colourful twinkly lights are no longer just for Christmas, but the ideal option to string above your outdoor dining table, bringing a fun focal point to an alfresco entertaining zone. Arrange solar-powered lanterns around the space to add ambience and a decor hit as well as a soft glow. Colour-changing spots can cast an other-wordly glow over feature trees or shrubs. “Bring a modern look to your outdoor space with an abundance of colour,” suggests Georgia. “RGB lighting is great for achieving cooler colour tones, and to showcase the natural beauty of plants.” Of particular importance outdoors is the strength and tone of the lighting. “For clearest visibility for architectural elements, choose warm-white lighting,” says Georgia. “Try warmer colour temperatures of around 2500K-3000K to highlight structures, and install warm-white deck lights to create ambience for patio areas.”

olidays should be relaxing, but nothing ruins a post-getaway buzz like returning to a burgled home. Summer can be a prime time for burglars, when homes are often unoccupied (and full of Christmas presents). Thieves tend to go for the easy win, so a few simple security steps can decrease your chances of being a target.

An obvious sensor light will put off would-be burglars

Position cameras over key points of vulnerability. At the minimum, place cameras to cover the front and back doors, and garage. Then look for other potential entry points, such as ground floor windows or gates. Mount cameras out of reach, but low enough to ensure a good view. And watch out for bright light from sunlight, street lights or security lights, which can cause lens flare. Sarica Malhotra of Swann says cameras should be easily spotted. “It serves as a visual warning to potential troublemakers, effectively dissuading thieves from even considering trespassing,” she says. “For an extra layer of security, I highly recommend the installation of Swann’s security signs and stickers. These visual cues enhance the deterrent effect, making it clear to any wouldbe intruders that your property is under active surveillance.” Add imitation cameras into the mix to amp up your perceived security. “I would throw in a word of caution though: 74 bunnings.com.au |

most troublemakers can easily identify imitation cameras, so make sure when you select one that it looks sturdy and convincing,” says Sarica.

Look out for lurkers

Sensor lights can be an effective deterrent, shining a spotlight on potential burglars before they can get up to no good. The team at Arlec suggests using them to illuminate pathways to provide safe footing for residents and invited guests, but also to focus on dimly lit areas like backyard corners, alleys and driveways. They add, “Mount the lights at a height that prevents tampering but still provides effective coverage. Angle the lights downward to reduce glare and ensure the motion sensor can detect movement effectively.”

Before you buy, there are several factors to consider, such as the range: “A longer range may be suitable for larger areas, while shorter ranges can minimise false activations,” says the Arlec team. Also look at the duration the light will stay on, energy-efficient features such as LED bulbs and dusk-to-dawn sensors (that only operate at night), and PIR sensors. “Motion-activated lights with passive infrared (PIR) sensors detect body heat and movement, reducing false triggers caused by animals or environmental factors,” says the Arlec team.

Smart secure entry Replace the jangle of keys with smart, simple and seamless digital lock solutions The Lockwood 001Touch Plus can replace most 60mm backset deadlatches

O

pen your home to the future, with digital and smart locking solutions from the most trusted names in door hardware. With Yale and Lockwood, it has never been easier to upgrade to contemporary convenience and next-level security.

PUT A PIN IN IT A digital lock is a simple upgrade from a traditional key lock, and the Lockwood SDL deadbolt can be retrofitted to replace your existing deadbolt in minutes. The advantages of this touchscreen lock are multiple: you can lock up with one touch of the keypad, then unlock with your unique PIN code, plus it offers a higher level of security, as the keyless design means the lock cannot be picked.

THE SMART OPTION The Lockwood 001Touch Plus smart deadlatch takes the iconic double cylinder deadlatch into the future. Working with the Yale Home app on your smartphone, the 001Touch Plus offers convenience (it automatically unlocks the door as you approach, without you taking out your phone) and peace of mind, letting you know whether your door is open or closed, allowing you to grant temporary access, and see who has opened it and when from the comfort of your home. Get the same level of functionality on your screen door with the Yale Unity security screen door lock, which combines a slim profile (designed to fit a standard screen door) with the same Yale Home-controlled smart tech.

DualDoor™ Technology unlocks both the Yale Unity Security Screen and Entry door locks with one command

It supports up to 16 Yale smart devices and enables features like DualDoor™ Technology**, which unlocks both the Yale Unity security screen and entrance door locks with a single command. The bridge can be integrated into your home automation system, and connect with other smart devices with voice control capabilities, such as lights, to welcome you home.

*Yale Connect Plus bridge is compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings. **The DualDoor™ feature is designed exclusively for the Australian market to use with Yale Unity series locks. If you have other smart locks connected by the Yale Home app, note that the ‘auto-unlock’ feature can only be set up for a single lock on each Keychain. Typically, a Keychain represents one home. can alert you or a monitoring service if someone tries to enter your property through doors or windows, or if there’s movement in your driveway. Remote monitoring capabilities, such as smartphone notifications, allow you to receive alerts and take appropriate action, like contacting authorities or neighbours, even when you’re not physically present,” advises the Arlec team. Even without remote monitoring, alarm systems can be a handy deterrent. Maria Bennett, CEO of Neighbourhood Watch Australasia, says, “DIY alarm systems are useful both when a person is home to hear them, and when they’re not. If soundemitting alarm systems are triggered when the system is armed and activated, it alerts the intruder that they have been detected. This can

cause the would-be burglar to leave the premises and can alert others in the locality – neighbours or police – to attend the premises.”

Street smarts

Smart technology brings added functionality to traditional security equipment, while potentially putting your mind at ease, as you can use your smartphone to monitor your home while you’re poolside or at the camping ground. With a huge range of smart tech available, you can start small and scale up your security as you like. As well as smart cameras and alarms, smart doorbell cameras are a useful tool, allowing you to not only monitor the front porch, but also receive smartphone notifications and communicate with visitors.

bunnings.com.au |

bunnings |

bunnings |

Inspect your security equipment and replace batteries in alarms. “Store away anything like wheelie bins or ladders that could be used to gain access to higher entry points, such as windows and balconies,” says Maria Bennett. Trim trees and shrubs to reduce hiding places. “Check all your valuables have been hidden away and are not visible through any windows, or can be found in easily suspected places,” says Sarica Malhotra. If you have a landline, turn the ringer off or right down, so people outside can’t hear it ring unanswered. Ensure home and contents insurance is up to date. Brief your neighbours and/or house sitter. Finally, although it seems obvious, check all doors and windows are securely locked!

“When integrated with other smart devices, smart doorbell cameras can trigger lights, chimes and announcements to make it seem like someone is answering the door,” says the Arlec team. Adding a smart lock to your door means you can monitor movement, allow access to visitors while you’re away and check (and remotely lock) the door after they’ve gone. bunnings |

Good neighbours

Don’t underestimate the value of good neighbourly relations. Maria Bennett suggests, “Ask a neighbour to take bins out and bring bins in (as putting them out too early or leaving them out longer is a sign that no one is home); ask neighbours if they could park one of their cars in your driveway, so it looks like someone is in the house; and get someone to collect your mail regularly.” Overgrown grass and unruly gardens are a sure sign a house is empty – ask your neighbours to mow your verge when they do their own, or hire someone to tackle the lawns in your absence. Make sure your neighbour has your phone number in case of emergencies, and if you can entrust them with a spare key, this is much safer than hiding one outside under a pot!

An obviously unoccupied home is an easy target and burglars are wise to tricks like leaving a light permanently on. New technologies make it easier to fool thieves into thinking you’re in residence, with remote operation or timer functions available on everything from lights to TVs. Simulate the presence of a diligent gardener by putting watering systems on timers, and keep lawns low with a robotic lawnmower. Inside, smart lights can mimic your daily routines, smart blinds can be programmed to open and close, and smart TVs can be scheduled to switch on. “Smart speakers like Amazon Echo or Google Nest can be programmed to play music or simulate conversations at specific times,” adds the Arlec team.

Bird is the word

Introducing an adopted dog or cat to your family home can be a confusing time for the pet, with new people, routines and possibly other animals to get used to. RSPCA NSW spokesperson Kieran Watson advises patience. “It can take around three weeks for an adopted dog or cat to start to relax and be themselves, especially if they have spent some time in a shelter,” he says. He recommends aiming to spend a few days at home with your new dog so you can get to know each other, check they are toilet-trained and if your yard is as escape-proof as you thought. It’s not their space yet, so they won’t feel safe for a while. If you do have to leave a new dog alone, the laundry with a comfy bed and water is best; if they must be outside, offer a bone or toy to keep them amused. Never leave a new dog unsupervised with a child and teach your kids to move gently and slowly around their new friend. The laundry is also the best place to confine your new cat for the first week or so while they get used to the sounds and smells of their new house. Provide a soft bed, scratch post, litter tray and water, and regular, calm visits so you can get to know each other.

We say ‘bird brain’ as an insult, but in fact birds are very intelligent and need stimulation. Follow these tips to keep yours amused: Rotate a range of toys around the cage to encourage movement. Create foraging fun by using toys in which you can hide or embed treats. Destructible wood toys are great for chewing – the bigger the bird, the harder the wood should be. Swings provide an ideal opportunity for exercise. Avoid toys where a claw might get stuck, such as an enclosed bell. Expect to buy new toys regularly – parrots, in particular, get joy from destroying things! 1 Paws & Claws 50cm x 2cm spiral rope parrot toy with bell, $11*/pack of 2, I/N: 0372132. 2 Paws & Claws 6cm x 15cm assorted vinyl bowling pin squeaky toys with pin clip strip, $9.95*/pack of 4, I/N: 0402378. 3 Paws & Claws 25cm large jute ring parrot/bird toy, $25*/pack of 2, I/N: 0416807. 4 Paws & Claws ‘Ferris Wheel’ 29cm x 19cm large wooden parrot toy, $10*, I/N: 0425347

the grass instantly. Just as they are about to finish their pee or poo, mark the behaviour with a verbal marker, like ‘Yes’, and give them a treat. It fixes in the dog’s mind: ‘This is what I’m getting rewarded for,’” explains Rodney. How long toilet training will take depends on you and your dog. However, the more consistent you are, the faster you’ll both get there.

Insider trick

HOUSE RULES PUT THE WORK IN EARLY TO GET YOUR PUPPY TOILET TRAINED AND HELP KEEP YOUR HOME MESS FREE

T

oilet training is one of the first things most of us want to address when we bring a new puppy home. Give yourself a head start on teaching your new furry friend with these tips from dog trainer Rodney Gooch.

Prep for success

Before your new puppy arrives, read about dog behaviour cues and housebreaking advice, and set up a short-term confinement area (such as a dog crate or puppy pen) to help limit the number of toileting mishaps. This area will prevent your puppy wandering unsupervised through the house (a recipe for accidents). “You’re also giving the dog a space where they can sleep and relax,” says Rodney. If you’ve got young children at home, teach kids not to go near your pet when they’re in their crate, so the puppy doesn’t feel threatened in there. “The other essential tool is treats,” says Rodney. He uses positive reinforcement training, which offers motivating rewards like food or toys to encourage desired behaviour. Puppies are quick learners and highly motivated 82 bunnings.com.au |

by food, so arm yourself with treats like roast chicken or dried liver that can be broken into small pieces.

Outside time

For most people, the goal of house training is for their dog to toilet outside on the grass, so you need to teach your pet that’s what you want them to do. According to Rodney, very young puppies have virtually no bladder control – in fact, they won’t be able to hold their pee until they’re four or five months old, so be vigilant. “Every time your puppy wakes up and has a drink or something to eat, take them out onto

bunnings |

If you’re looking at using a toilettraining mat – perhaps because you live in an apartment – here’s a trick that might help. “If you can, collect some of the dog’s pee and pour it over the mat. If dogs can smell their own pee, they’ll know where to toilet,” says Rodney. Otherwise, the way to teach your puppy to use a mat or pet potty is the same as teaching them to toilet outside: take them to that spot, mark the behaviour and reward them.

Whoopsies

When you’re toilet training a puppy, accidents are inevitable, but don’t acknowledge them. “Remember, your puppy is still learning,” says Rodney. “Put the puppy outside and the next time he toilets on the grass, reinforce with your verbal marker and a treat.” Clean up the mess as soon as you can and use a specialist pet odour-removing spray. These products have an enzyme in them that breaks down the smell of urine and reduces the likelihood of your puppy going back there again to pee. 1 1 To join two pool noodles, wear disposable gloves to apply heavy-duty adhesive and position the noodles end to end. Wrap white cloth tape around the join and leave to dry on a flat surface.

2 To create a twisted candy stripe, wrap the cloth tape diagonally along the noodles, leaving a 50mm gap between the rotations. Trim the ends at an angle with scissors. Tip: Allow about 5m tape per lollipop.

3 Tape the loose end of the rope light to one end of noodles, then wrap it along the centre of the tape. Bend the same end of the noodle in and hold it flat while rolling into a tight scroll. Clamp over the top to prevent it from unravelling.

4 Push a 16mm garden stake through the base of the scroll, avoiding the light and tapping it through the layers with a mallet. Pierce halfway through the final layer, then remove the stake. Push the curtain rod through the holes using the mallet.

5 Zip a cable tie at the base of the scroll to hold the light and wrap the remainder down the rod. Remove clamp. Fold cellophane in half over the scroll, bunch ends around the rod and hold with a cable tie. Wrap ribbon around in a bow.

6 Make a hole with the garden stake 200mm deep into the lawn, then push in the lollipop. Stake the solar panel in the ground, close to the rod, and neaten the excess light cord with a cable tie to avoid a trip hazard.

Gather the hessian ribbons where they cross, secure with a cable tie and attach the bow with another. Add hanging fir cones, switch the lights on and let your door twinkle at all who come by!

1 Cut a 1500mm length of hessian using scissors, then fold it over three times into a piece 500mm x 900mm. Tip: Keep the hessian double thickness (as it comes on the roll). 86 bunnings.com.au |

2 Working in thirds, fold the ends under, crossing them to form the tails of the bow. Position twinkle lights in the layers of hessian.

Pot stars These Christmas trees are a twist on the traditional

Woolly bush

Hailing from Western Australia, this hardy native has a compact habit and silvery-green, velvety foliage. It grows into a sizeable shrub up to 5m tall but will be smaller if grown in a large container. Alternatively, the dwarf form, ‘Baby Woolly Bush’, reaches only 1.5m tall.

Wollemi pine

This ancient Australian conifer develops a conical shape with pendulous branches and needlelike leaves. In the wild, Wollemi pines are at high risk of extinction, so trees have been propagated and sold worldwide – allowing you to own a special piece of history! It may grow 10-20m tall in a garden.

Resembles the classic Christmas tree with its evenly spaced branches and dark-green leaves. Endemic to Norfolk Island, it has also been planted across warmer areas of Australia, particularly on coastlines as it is tolerant of salt-laden winds. Develops into a large tree 35m tall, so keep in a pot to control growth.
