It’s basically a given that a DIY project will take longer than you expect. We tackled a biggish tree-planting job over the holidays and hit clay. Hours of back-breaking work with a pick and a shovel later, with just one hole to show for it, we threw in the towel and hired a post hole digger. Lesson learned: plan for everything! A3 sheet of white paper A3 black photo frame with white mat board Masking tape (we used Bear 18mm x 50m general purpose masking tape) Mini roller with tray Black paint (we used Taubmans All Black)
Make it!
Method
1
Check the paper fits into the frame, then position the masking tape lengthways, leaving various widths between. Tip: This method uses negative space, so the resulting pattern is created by painting the open sections. Use a mini roller to apply paint over the open sections, leaving it to dry. Peel the masking tape from the paper to reveal the design. Position the artwork in the frame.

Method
1
Roll 10mm-diameter balls of craft clay, then press them onto a clean work surface to create flatbottomed 3D dots, leaving them to dry for 24 hours. Tip: Make about 10 dots for your pot. Lay out a drop cloth to protect the work surface then apply white paint all over the pot using a mini roller, leaving to dry. Paint the 3D clay dots black using a craft paintbrush and leave them to dry. Apply superglue to the flat sides of the 3D dots, pushing them onto the pot to create a pattern.

his season is one of the best times of year to plant. In autumn, the soil is still warm, but the weather is cooler and hopefully more rainy, helping plants to settle in nicely before the onset of winter. If you’re planning a new garden or even just looking to update an established space, consider a white garden as your starting point. It has a universal appeal, easily lending itself to traditional, modern or cottage garden-style plantings. Wonder whites “Everyone is happy to have some white in the garden, but the same can’t be said for most colours,” explains director and principal designer Matt Leacy of Landart (landart.com.au). “With its broad appeal, it can be used as a great base or feature prominently throughout the landscape.” Play with forms, sizes and textures to create a beautiful, harmonious space. White plants inject life into dull corners and can even provide a cooling effect on a hot day. The simple palette is also a classic look, transcending trends. “One of the attributes of a white garden is that it can be enchanting in the late evening as well as during the midday sun,” says Tim Sansom, PRO TIP “If a garden is more traditional, go for a warm white. perfect candidates for bringing a gentle glow to a gloomy corner,” says Tim Sansom. Pale and interesting Most flowers are not true white. “As with paint colours, plants have a dazzling and confusing array of whites, from cool whites to warm whites and everything in between,” says Tim. For a harmonious effect, he suggests showing restraint. “Choose no more than 10 varieties and repeat them throughout the garden – this will allow you to be more specific about the shade of white,” he says. Look for varying flower shapes, heights and flowering times to maintain year-round visual interest. Flowers shouldn’t be the only white feature in your garden, especially when blooms can be so fleeting. Go beyond florals by including silver or variegated foliage. “Plants like Euphorbia ‘Silver Swan’ and Dietes ‘White Tiger’ are super hardy and easy-care plants that have a crisp white variegation as well as having different foliage forms that create interest in your planting,” explains Tim. Hellebore blooms will bring life to your garden from winter through to spring
green foliage. The weeping lilly pilly tree (Waterhousea floribunda) and fragrant star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) create a great contrast. “Planting deep green bay trees (Laurus nobilis) or creepers such as climbing figs (Ficus pumila) provides a backdrop of dark green that really makes white flowers pop, whether cool or warm white,” says Tim. “Avoid lime and yellow leaved plants as they will
clash with cool-white colours.” If you’re keen on warmer white florals, the lighter green leaves of Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’, Arthropodium ‘Te Puna’ and lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis) are a good match. “For a more exotic space, large leaved plants like Abyssinian banana, nolina or a tree aloe look amazing with creamy whites,” says Matt Leacy. Try planting pockets of interest with silver or grey foliage plants. “The neat and upright Adenanthos ‘Platinum’ work well as a contrast and there are even some plants, like Dianthus ‘Memories’, that have both grey foliage and pure white flowers,” says Tim. These details will help give the garden a sense of depth and movement. Material world When choosing materials to complement your plant palette, stick to neutrals. “Weathered timber and soft-grey limestone are the perfect accompaniments to a white garden,” says Matt. They’re not over-powering and impart a sense of elegance and sophistication to the space. “If you want to experiment with textures, cobbles or terracotta also work really well.” ¿ WARM WHITE

Tackling a big DIY project? Here’s how to nail down a plan that will see it through from start to successful completion STEP 1 Make a moodboard If an overhaul of a whole room is on the cards, a moodboard will help you form a plan. “Moodboards are a crucial part of the planning phase to make sure the colours, materials, finishes and furnishing items selected all work well together and are in line with the overall vision,” says Luisa Volpato of Advantage Interior Design (advantagestyling.com.au). Collect paint, fabric and material samples, take photos of things you like when you’re out and about, and include existing furniture as well as fittings. Then gather everything together and play about with your findings until you settle on a look you love. A digital moodboard is an option for the tech savvy, or you can create a physical board made from cork or foam. The benefit of the latter is you can place tile samples, paint swatches and more on the board and get a true sense of the colours, which you won’t get on a computer screen. STEP 2 Create a timeline Set out a prioritised checklist of activities, assigning each a realistic timeline. For example, if you’re painting a wall, you might need to factor in time for patching dings in the plaster, or devote a whole day just to prep – cleaning, sanding and taping up – so you can launch into painting the following morning. If it’s a large project, break it down into manageable tasks, and aim to work sequentially – in other words, finish all the preparation first before you move on to the fun stuff, such as painting!

STEP 3 Define the scale Some tasks, including plumbing and electrics, require a licensed tradesperson. Also be realistic about your skills. If you can’t manage every task yourself, call in the experts. “It’s easier and more cost-effective to bring in a professional early on rather than make expensive mistakes and then seek assistance later,” says Luisa. Work out when you’ll need professional assistance – for example, laying a new floor – and when you’ll be tackling the DIY part, like painting the walls and trim. Bear in mind you might want their help mid-project – such as after the messy prep work, but before finishing painting.

STEP 4 Make a list Measure your project space, taking note of the dimensions of the areas you need to consider so you can work out exactly what you’ll need to complete the task and in what quantities. There are convenient online planners, such as Bunnings’ paint and flooring calculators, which can help. Make a definitive list of everything you need to avoid mid-project trips back to the store. If you’re ordering materials yourself, check and recheck your calculations and always order extra – 10 per cent more flooring, an extra roll of wallpaper, for example – just in case. Running out of materials before the end is not only inconvenient, but if you’re relying on professionals, it will actually cost you money in your tradies’ wasted time. It can also make a visual difference, as Luisa explains: “A plain white tile can really differ from one batch to another, so if you run out and then buy a box from another batch, those new tiles can be a slightly different shade.”
STEP 5 Draw up a budget Assign realistic costs to each item. Make sure to record all your estimated costs and don’t forget to include a decent contingency allowance. “Allowing at least 20 per cent for contingencies is smart, because there will always be something you forgot, need or want,” says Luisa. ¿

Plan it The right whites “A light and airy colour scheme anchored by white walls creates a sense of generous proportions and can be updated with pops of colour without needing constant refreshing,” says Kelly Magee, colour expert at British Paints. Material matters Panelling is a classic inclusion in Hamptons style. Inside, think on-trend VJ boards, used full or half height, or panelling to dado rail height for a more traditional look. Shadow cabinet “This house is a new build but I wanted it to have character,” explains Hazel. To get the Shaker-style look she wanted, she chose Kaboodle’s ‘Alpine’ profile cabinet doors. “It’s not made to measure, so it was like a game of Tetris as we worked with the catalogue on our layout,” she says. “We had to think about where we wanted to cook, where the rubbish would go and where to store pots and pans. We then splurged on door and drawer handles to elevate it.”

Cupboard love Hazel lent the kitchen a dash of farmhouse charm with the choice of a Corinthian French door for the pantry. Black paint and brass door hardware tie it in with the kitchen cabinets, while the glass panels give a glimpse of well-organised shelves within. Bold as brass “My style is neutral and timeless – black, white, brass and some greenery,” says Hazel. The warm metallic gleam – seen in the tap and cabinetry knobs and pulls – lends a new dimension and an additional layer of visual interest. A regular in the nursery section at Bunnings, Hazel’s love for plants is evident, from the benchtop herbs to a flourishing devil’s ivy, which trails from the top of the cabinets almost to the floor.
Make a splash Laying a splashback in a herringbone pattern can be pricier than the usual brick-style subway layout, due to the number of angled cuts required. “The tiles weren’t overly expensive – we spent more on labour here,” Hazel explains. The layout is a great example of how to take a budget-friendly product and give it an upmarket spin that turns it into a real statement feature in the room. ◆

Solid timber flooring is beautifully in keeping with the country-style kitchen of this heritage home reno
Engineered flooring “The advantage of engineered timber flooring is that it is more dimensionally stable than solid wood,” says building and construction consultant Klaas Tigchelaar. “This means it does not expand and shrink the way traditional timber flooring does and so can be laid directly over concrete without the same risks.” These qualities make engineered flooring well suited to kitchens, being better able to withstand changing temperatures and humidity than solid timber. If your engineered timber floors do start looking scruffy, they can stand some sanding and recoating – look for a thicker timber top layer (4mm is good), which allows it to be refreshed. Laying engineered flooring is also an easier DIY project than solid timber flooring.

Solid timber “Timber flooring never goes out of style,” says renovation expert Belinda Westblade of Homemade Harmony. “This classic floor lends natural beauty and warmth to your kitchen, but spills need to be wiped up

Timber floors are also easily scratched but can be sanded and refinished.” One thing to be aware of though, is that solid timber flooring can’t be laid straight onto concrete because of the danger of moisture moving up from the concrete into the timber. They’ll need layers of polyethylene and plywood to separate them, which will add an extra

Vinyl Incredibly durable and lowmaintenance, vinyl comes in a huge range of styles, mimicking the look of stone, concrete, timber and distressed timber. It also has great sound absorption qualities, is safer for children (read: softer falls), and is easy to clean. “Vinyl sheeting can be a completely impermeable kitchen floor covering,” says Klaas. “It’s non-porous, cost-effective, hardwearing, low-maintenance and it creates a safe working environment, as it’s a non-slip surface. It is also easier on the feet than ceramic tiles.” While vinyl sheeting installation is a job best left to the professionals, laying vinyl planks and tiles can be a straightforward DIY option, if you have a sound, clean and level floor.
Tiles “The great thing about tiles is that they can withstand heavy foot traffic, water and spills and don’t absorb odours or bacteria,” says Belinda Westblade. “The downside is that standing on tiles for long periods can be tough on legs and backs.” They’re also cold (unless you have underfloor heating) and unforgivingly hard – expect breakages if you’re prone to butter fingers. “Ceramic tiles can last forever under normal use, with their only weak point being the grout in between,” says Klaas Tigchelaar. However, there are products that can help seal grout lines, so set a date to apply this annually to keep your tiles and grout looking their best. Tiles are a relatively easy installation for confident DIYers, if you have an even, level surface.

cost and can also raise the floor by 38mm. In a room renovation this has the potential to cause problems with doorways or transition points. Laminate “There are some great new, timber-look laminates that are durable, scratch- and water-resistant,” says Belinda. “This makes it a great choice for families with children or pets.” Laminate floors are formed from moisture-resistant layers around a core of high-density fibreboard. These extra layers of protection make it suitable for even the wettest rooms in the house and well able to withstand the odd kitchen spill. “If laminate flooring has a weak point,” says Klaas, “it’s the edges of the boards, which are not finished. To overcome this,
when laying the laminate ensure that the seams between the boards are so tight that the floor almost becomes impervious to dirt and water. When sealed like this and properly maintained, your average laminate kitchen floor should last a very long time.” ◆

Recipe for success Here’s how to master assembling DIY flatpack base cabinets to help create your own dream kitchen
STEP-BY-STEP BASE CABINET CONSTRUCTION

Unpack the cabinet and check that you have everything you need to put the carcass together. Run adhesive along the edge of the base and position it against the back panel. Use the corner clamp at the top of the join, checking the edges are flush at the top and bottom. Secure the lower hole with a 50mm screw and remove the clamp to finish securing. Tip: The base panel has small guide holes in square formations for the feet, and the back has countersunk holes along just one edge. The side panels have holes on three sides.

Position the right panel over the assembly, with the two holes close together at the top and towards the front. Clamp the top of the join, checking the edges are flush all around and secure 50mm screws up the side, removing the clamp to finish. Flip the assembly over to repeat with the left panel. Tip: Check the sealed panel edges face forward and the countersunk holes are on the outside, and run adhesive around the edge of the assembly before securing.

Keeping the assembly on its side, run adhesive along the ends of the support rail then position it inside the top of the side panels, clamping so there is access to the holes, and secure with 50mm screws. Remove the clamp, stand the cabinet up, check the rail is flush and finish securing.
Do-it-yourself kitchen essentials A DIY kitchen is put together one flatpack cabinet at a time. Start by assembling the cabinets, install them and check they are completely level before adding the doors, shelving, drawers, hardware and accessories. Finish with the kickboards, which hide the feet. It’s best to ‘dry fit’ your base cabinets first before joining them. Start by positioning a corner or end cabinet, adjusting the feet to ensure it is level.

Once all the base cabinets are joined, secure every second cabinet to the wall. Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs, marking the position with painter’s tape above the cabinets. Countersink holes, with two at the top and two at the base, then use 65mm timber screws through the cabinet back panel to attach it to the wall studs. If you are changing your existing kitchen layout, it can
be a good idea to have your plans checked by a professional to ensure it will all fit perfectly. However, if you are moving or installing structural walls for your kitchen renovation, you’ll definitely need guidance from a builder or engineer. Qualified trades are essential to do any plumbing, electrical and gas works; not complying with this can be unsafe as well as potentially compromising warranties and insurance.

nyone who has tried their hand at putting together flatpack furniture knows that it can be trickier than it looks, but the pay-off is a new look that won’t break the budget. We’re sharing the tips and tricks that will help you assemble Kaboodle Kitchen base cabinets seamlessly. The easiest way to put them together is to turn them on their sides. While not essential, it’s also best to use woodworking adhesive along the raw edge joins, especially on larger cabinets, for extra strength.

Turn the cabinet upside down on the floor to position the leg base plates over the pre-drilled holes, with the tapered edges facing outward to support the sides of the cabinet. Line up the holes and secure with 28mm screws. Push the legs into the plates and wind on the feet, using a combination square to set them at 145mm high. (This is the height of the kickboards.) Build the rest of the base cabinets. Tip: To install shelves, position the shelf brackets then slide the shelf down from above. Push the back down first to wedge it into the rear brackets, then adjust the front.

Once all cabinets are assembled, start at the lowest section of the floor, measure up 865mm and mark. (This is the maximum height of the base cabinets with kick boards.) Use a spirit level to continue the mark around the wall to ensure the top of your finished base cabinetry will be perfectly level. The feet can be adjusted to allow for any inconsistencies in the floor. Use regular clamps to hold the base cabinets together then countersink holes, drill through and secure with the supplied 28mm screws. Tip: Position four joining screws, one in each corner, hiding the front screws under the hinge plates.

To install hinges, press the tab at the end to separate them from the plates. Put the hinges into the door, lining up the pre-drilled holes to secure with the supplied screws. In the cabinet, line up the elongated holes on the plate with the pre-drilled holes, round holes facing forward, and secure with screws. Line up the door hinges with the hinge plates and push to click into place. Tip: If the door isn’t square with the cabinet, move it slightly sideways by adjusting the front screw on the hinge. Adjust the back screw to move it in or out, and the screws on the hinge plate to move the door up or down.

Cut the kickboard to fit under the row of cabinets using a mitre or circular saw. Tape the floor to mark the position of the cabinet legs, put the board face-side in against the legs and tape to match the floor marks, marking a down arrow on the tape. Remove the board, then centre kickboard clips over the tape, using a drill to secure with the supplied screws. Reposition the board against the legs with the arrows pointing upwards and clip onto the legs.

To attach the guide to the side of the drawer, position the lip almost flush with the front of the drawer to match the holes, securing with screws. Install the drawers from the base up, matching the guides with the runners and pushing into place. Tip: Depending on the type of runner you’ve chosen, there will be two or three holes visible – secure these with screws. To add extra strength, there are spare screws included. Pre-drill and secure at least two extra screws for each runner and guide, spacing them evenly.

ADDING DRAWERS Runners are sold separately to the drawers – buy them in sets to match the number of drawers in the cabinet and note there is no left or right as they can be used on both sides. Make drawers by attaching panels to the front and back of the base by securing with the supplied screws. To attach the sides, position the assembly as you would open the drawer, placing the right panel (indicated by an R sticker) on your right-hand side, same with the left. Separate the drawer guides from the runners by sliding the black tab up or down. Position a runner over the guide holes in the cabinet, with the slide-out section facing forward and the front of the runner almost flush with the edge of the cabinet. Secure with screws into the visible holes (there should be at least two).

To help with accurate 90° joins, use a corner clamp. We used a 300mm Irwin medium-duty quick-grip clamp with a corner clamp attachment. Peel off the standard pads and replace them by sliding the clamping mitre onto the handle end, and the corner pad on the other (see below). Use a short screwdriver when installing hinges, as it gives easier access when adjusting the screws. Invest in a magnetic drill driver bit to help avoid dropping screws when securing them.

Method
1 Cut varied lengths of cotton and jute twine and roll each into a ball for easy handling. 2 Starting on the 20cm trivet, wrap one ball of cotton twine over the outer ring of the trivet then the inner ring and tie a knot underneath to hold in place. Continue to wrap until this length of twine has run out and a section of the trivet is covered in twine. 3 Repeat this process, alternating jute and cotton twine, pulling twine tight, arranging it to avoid overlap and knotting at end of twine to secure in place, until trivet is covered. 4 Repeat on 40cm trivet, wrapping twine around inner rings of trivet first. ou’ve picked out your colour swatches, played with a few sample pots and the brushes and rollers are ready to go. Now you need to choose the right paint for the job. Base camp The majority of paint finishes are water-based, often also called acrylic paints. This means you can use water to dilute the paint (for example, if using a paint sprayer) and to wash out brushes and rollers. Oil-based paints (also called solvent-based) take longer to dry and give off a stronger smell, due to their higher VOC (volatile organic compound, see opposite page for more) bunnings.com.au |

content. Mineral turpentine or a similar appropriate thinner is required to clean your brushes. Water-based enamels are increasingly taking over from high-gloss, solvent-based enamels, according to Bonnie Jenkinson, Dulux interior product manager. “People are gaining a preference for waterbased products due to the ease of water wash-up, faster drying times and low odour during application,” she explains. Lustre for life Paints come in a range of sheen levels, from high gloss to satin, semi-gloss and low sheen, and flat or matt. “The main thing that gives a paint its sheen is the ratio between pigments bunningswarehouse
and binder,” Bonnie explains. Gloss enamel paint is often preferred for timber trims while semi-gloss water-based paint is popular for walls. Ceilings are usually painted in a matt or flat formulation, which helps to disperse light more evenly and hide imperfections, like joints between plasterboard sheets. For an ultra-matt look, chalk paint – such as Dulux Design Chalk Effect or Rust-Oleum Chalked – makes a powerful statement for upcycled furniture and can be sanded back slightly for a gorgeous distressed effect. What are VOCs?
Paints have traditionally been a major source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). “When you walk into a freshly painted or renovated house, often the odours you’re picking up are due to VOCs coming from the materials,” says Josh Plautz, Dulux interior paint expert. These odours usually diffuse over time and disperse into the outdoors. Low-VOC paints are becoming more available. “A low-VOC coating is formulated to avoid the use of VOCs, meaning they won’t be present in the first place,” he says. “The change has mainly been made possible by the switch to water-based paints. This means you can get back to using rooms faster and your family has lower exposure to these chemicals. of being easy to clean and creating a sleek, smooth finish. “Higher sheen paints have more binder than pigment, giving the paint extra washability,” says Bonnie Jenkinson. Advances in technology mean it’s now possible to find lower sheen level paints that are also easy to clean. For
example, Taubmans Endure range includes a matt finish that is both stain resistant and highly washable. Trim and neat Timber trims around a home, such as skirting boards, architraves and window frames, are usually subjected to more wear and tear than walls. So it’s wise to use a hard-wearing enamel paint for these features, particularly skirtings. “These areas are high foot-traffic parts of the home, so they’re prone to bumps and scrapes, making it important to choose the right product for the job,” says Kelly Magee, senior brand manager for British Paints. Products such as British Paints Paint & Prime Doors Windows & Trims give an ultra-smooth look that should stand the test of time. Though generally not as tough or as glossy as an oil-based paint, water-based bunningswarehouse |
enamel, such as Dulux Aquanamel, is another good option for trims. Doors tend to cop a bit of abuse as well, so tough enamel paint is a good option. “Dulux Aquanamel and Super Enamel (our Dulux oil-based option) are typically used in semi-gloss and gloss sheen levels for door applications,” says Bonnie. Outdoor types For painting weatherboards and similar exterior surfaces, choose a paint formulated to tolerate the harsh Aussie sun, such as Taubmans All Weather or Dulux Weathershield. Both of these are water-based exterior paints that can be applied directly to most surfaces without requiring a coat of primer first. Vanity flair The focal point of a great bathroom is a stylish, functional vanity. Here’s how to choose the right one for you

hether you’re updating a few fittings, renovating your bathroom or planning a new spa-inspired ensuite, choosing a vanity is a big decision. As the storage and grooming hub, it’s a high-use fixture that, with the right accessories, can be as practical as it is beautiful. Size matters First, measure the size of your bathroom and the space available to accommodate the vanity. “Allow for clearance to open doors and fully extend drawers, and space from wet zones like the bath and shower,” says Nicole Wesley, communications manager at Cibo Design. A good clearance is 300mm between the vanity and an adjacent toilet, and 600mm in front of the vanity, so you can move around it comfortably. Consider your priorities, too. Do you want to maximise bench space, incorporate ample storage or calm the morning rush hour with twin basins? In family bathrooms, storage may be a high priority, whereas if you are shopping for a powder room or guest bathroom, it might not be so important. “A double vanity can be a great option in family bathrooms where multiple people are using the space at the same time,” says Nicole, who suggests allowing at least 1200mm to accommodate a dual sink.

Fix it Off the wall Style preferences, plumbing and available space are factors that influence whether you choose a freestanding or wallmounted vanity. “If you’re renovating and need to utilise and conceal existing plumbing, which goes through the floor, a freestanding model is generally the most convenient and cost-effective option and often maximises storage,” says Nicole. On the other hand, wall-hung vanities, which are plumbed through the wall, can help create the illusion of more space, which is ideal in compact bathrooms, says Annalisa Caronna, Forme national sales and marketing manager. “Being up off the ground, they’re also easier to clean around and aren’t affected by water on the floor, which can damage kickboards on freestanding styles,” she says. and style requirements. “If you’re on a budget or have a small bathroom, a savvy cost-effective solution is to choose a vanity with an integrated ceramic basin such as the Cibo ‘Function’ at just 370mm deep,” says Nicole. Countertop and undermounted sinks both have pros and cons. A countertop or vessel basin creates a statement, generally has excellent water capacity and maximises storage in your vanity cabinet. But they can be a little tricky to clean around and require a standard bench depth of at least 460mm. “For a sleek, streamlined look, an undermounted basin is ideal and allows extra bench space, but you will lose out on drawers or cupboard space to accommodate it,” says Annalisa. Space can also be the deciding factor when it comes to taps. Wall-mounted tapware will save bench space, but needs to be plumbed through the wall. Benchmounted tapware is typically easier to install, yet takes up valuable room and can be harder to clean around. ¿

Window dressing Updating existing daggy curtains is an easy fix, while installing new ones to a bare window or to disguise an ugly blind will require fitting a curtain rod. If working within a window embrasure, you can use adjustable fittings that don’t require any drilling, but a more permanent solution will be needed for a curtain pole on a flat wall. Always check before drilling into walls, but curtains will usually get the thumbs up from a landlord. “If you’re doing it tastefully and only putting holes where necessary, your landlord should be grateful you’re helping add to the space!” says Emma.

A
ustralians love the outdoor lifestyle, which means our decks get a good workout almost year-round, copping a lot of scuffing, staining from barbecues, pets and kids, and anything else we can throw at them. While we’re all aware that decks need to be protected against our harsh summers, weather can be just as damaging in winter, depending on where you live. Brian Rohan, managing director of Outside Concepts (outsideconcepts.net.au), says decks should be cleaned and oiled twice a year if exposed to the weather. “The summer sun is particularly hard on the timber and leaches the oils out of it,” he says, “so cleaning and oiling the deck again before winter is equally important to protect the wood from harsh, cold weather conditions.” Clear the decks Start by removing everything off the deck – garden furniture, pot plants and so on – and inspect the deck thoroughly. Look for nails that have lifted, damaged and sagging boards, and loose handrails. Make any necessary repairs. Use a soft broom to sweep up dirt and leaves, including any leaves stuck between boards. “If the deck has raised fibres, it could benefit from a light sanding, which would also help prolong the life of the coating,” says Warren May, Bunnings paint buyer. Sanding is not always necessary, but will result in a smoother finish. Use a belt sander, running with the grain of the timber, then use a detail sander to sand into the gaps between the boards. Sweep again to get rid of the dust. Use tarps to cover anything stored underneath the deck (or remove stored items entirely) and to protect any plants alongside.

Scrub a dub A good sweep is only the start of the cleaning process. “Any preparation will improve penetration of the oil or stain along with the finish,” says Warren. “Poor preparation will mean the coating may not last as long as expected.” For a seriously

Beyond timber decking
Modular decks Modular timber decks are simply pre-assembled decking sections, which make installing and repairing a deck easier and quicker. They are still made from timber and need the same maintenance as a traditional timber deck. Composite decking This type of decking is a combination of particles of timber and plastic. It is less likely to rot, splinter, warp or decay than timber, has a much longer life expectancy and doesn’t need regular oiling, staining, sealing or painting. “Composite decking requires very little maintenance,” says Brian. “Just make sure water doesn’t pool on it and that other organic matter doesn’t sit and rot, as it may leave marks.” Fibre cement decking “Unlike timber, HardieDeck doesn’t discolour, warp or split from moisture or sun exposure, removing the need to periodically oil it or stain it,” says James Hardie product manager Christian Hansen of this tough fibre cement product. If the finish starts to look worn or water begins to soak into the boards, it’s time to reseal, he says. Otherwise, “Like any surface, regular cleaning and addressing general wear and tear will help keep HardieDeck looking fresh.”

grubby deck, a pressure cleaner is very effective. The key is to test it first on an inconspicuous area and make sure you don’t turn the pressure up too high or hold the nozzle too close to the timber, as it can damage the surface and even split the wood. Then use an approved detergent, such as Cabot’s Deck Clean. Mix it in a bucket according to the instructions, and use a hard-bristled broom or deck brush to scrub it clean, paying particular attention to patches of mould or moss. Leave it for 15 minutes and then rinse off the deck with the hose, or a pressure washer if you’re using one. Allow it to dry completely before applying a protective oil or stain. Protective duty Now your deck is looking clean and fresh, you need to apply a protective coating. “An oil or stain will protect the timber from the harsh elements and prevent it splitting and warping,” says Warren. Moisture in the timber can also lead to rot, mould and moss. Applying oil or a stain regularly will protect your deck and keep it looking lovely for the long haul. Which you choose depends on the effect you want to achieve; oil enhances the natural colour of the timber, while stain allows you to change the colour – perfect if your deck is a functional but uninspiring timber like pine. To apply the oil or stain, use a woodcare brush to cut in around the edges of the deck and along the gaps between the boards. Use a lambswool applicator for the upper surface of the deck. Allow it to dry completely before applying a second coat – add an optional third coat if the deck is exposed to the elements. Leave the deck to dry for a day or two before replacing furniture. Keep it clean Ultimately, keeping your deck clean throughout the year is the key to its longevity. Use a soft broom regularly, which will stop small particles of dirt and dust from building up and creating a bigger problem down the track. ¿

Step by step With modular decking, it’s so easy to give your backyard a practical and stylish upgrade

odular decking can turn hesitant DIYers into confident tool slingers, bringing the tricky job of building a deck within the skillset of a relative novice. Just follow the directions to assemble the pieces and you can have a new deck completed and party-ready in no time. Here’s what’s involved. TOOLS & MATERIALS

Measure the area where you’d like the deck to be positioned and clear space around it. With these measurements, purchase enough base and decking pieces to fill the space. Screw your decking base kit together – this is a simple assembly job, as the base frame kit comes with pre-cut timber lengths and pre-drilled holes. Wearing ear and eye protection, use an impact driver to attach the pieces with baton screws, as per the instructions. Attach the feet to the base frame by tapping them in with a hammer. Lay out the base frame sections to check the fit. Make sure everything is level, adjusting the feet to suit – they easily wind up or down, as needed – to ensure the deck is level. Note: The modular decking can be laid on almost any surface – concrete, grass or soil – but if laying on grass or soil, use concrete pavers as a support base under the feet. If the ground is very uneven and the feet won’t wind down far enough on one side, use additional pavers or bricks to jack them up. Once you’ve attached the feet, use a spirit level to make sure it’s all level again. This is

an important step – no-one likes a wonky deck! Wearing safety gear, use the impact driver to screw the frames together with baton screws. Lay the deck panels across the beams, lining up the gaps. The panels can be left loose, or you can secure with screws (see product instructions for screw positions). The decking panels come treated and ready to go, but it’s a good idea to also apply a coat of decking oil. Use a brush to cut in around the deck and along the gaps between boards, and a lambswool applicator to apply oil to the top of the deck. Repeating this once a year will prolong the life of your decking timber. ¿

How to repair
A SMALL HOLE
This method is best for a hole up to 20mm, the sort that might be made by a picture hook. Handy kits, such as the Monarch Mini ‘Fill Sand Go’, have everything you need for quick fixes (or just use some filler and a spatula!) – simply add a small brush and paint in the same colour as your wall.

Use 120-grit abrasive paper to sand over the hole (kits have this and everything else you need). Gently run your hand over the hole to check the edges don’t protrude. Sand again if necessary, then wipe with a cloth to remove dust.

Scoop up a pea-size amount of filler with a spatula (or supplied applicator). Hold the applicator at a 45˚ angle to smooth over the hole, then hold it at 90˚to scrape away the excess. Leave to dry for about half an hour.

Lightly sand in a circular motion, then remove any dust with a cloth. Dab a brush into paint, remove excess, then feather over the repair and surrounding area, applying light layers and leaving to dry between each.

hether it’s smoothing out a small ding before painting or patching a bigger hole to get your rental bond back, repairing damaged plasterboard is a life skill worth having. The size of the hole will determine how you tackle the task and the product you should use for the most seamless result. Before you start, keep in mind that gypsum plaster is crumbly and dusty, so cover the surrounding area with a drop cloth and always wear safety gear, including a mask and eye protection.

A MEDIUM HOLE
This is best for a hole of around 30-50mm, which might have been made by a door handle or similar. You’ll need a utility knife, 120-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block, self-adhesive fibreglass mesh tape, Selleys ‘Spakfilla Rapid’, a mini roller with tray, and paint in the same colour as your wall.

Use a utility knife to carefully trim around the edges of the hole to remove any torn paper or flaky debris, then smooth over the hole with a sanding block wrapped in 120-grit abrasive paper. Use a cloth to wipe away the dust.
Use abrasive paper with a sanding block to sand over the filled area in a circular motion, smoothing over the edges and onto the surrounding wall. Wipe away any dust with a cloth.
Cut a piece of self-adhesive fibreglass mesh tape to fit over the hole, ensuring there is excess to adhere to the wall, applying two pieces if necessary. Centre the tape over the hole and press it onto the wall.
Push filler into the mesh with the supplied spatula in a wiping motion from opposite directions, spreading it onto the surrounding wall 20mm past the tape. Scrape over the area to remove excess. Leave to dry for at least half an hour.
Reapply filler over the area using a wiping motion from opposite directions, extending the coverage onto the wall by about 20mm around the area. Leave to dry thoroughly, then sand and wipe away dust.
Pour a small amount of paint into a tray and use the top section of the tray to roll out the paint and remove excess, then roll over the repaired wall area, feathering the edges. Leave to dry then repeat, applying two or three coats.

How to repair
A BIG HOLE
This is for a hole up to 120mm. You’ll need a plasterboard panel, plaster repair compound, joint tape, 120-grit abrasive paper and a paint scraper or broadknife (or use a kit like the Gyprock 1.5kg DIY Rapid Repair Kit, which includes all of this). You’ll also need a utility knife and a wallboard saw. While you can spot-patch over the repair with same-colour wall paint, it’s better to refresh the entire wall.

Make a filler piece from a small section of plasterboard, marking it to slightly larger than the hole. Score along the marks with a utility knife, using another panel as a straight edge. Hold it with both hands to snap the edges. Centre the filler piece over the hole and mark around it with a pen.

Apply compound around the front face of a backing piece, position it through the cavity, with the face against the wall to cover about a third of the cavity, push from the back and hold it onto the wall for 30 seconds. Repeat with the remaining backing piece, leaving to dry for at least an hour.
Check there is no obstructing plumbing or wiring. Use a wallboard saw to cut diagonally into the corners. Score around the mark with a utility knife and push the excess into wall. Trim the edges – hold the knife with the handle angled slightly out so the blade leaves a bevelled edge, allowing for more plaster.
Apply compound over the filler piece, then position it to cover the backing pieces, wiping away excess. Leave to dry for an hour. Tip: Keep the lid on the container between applications to prevent the mixture from drying out. Be prepared to discard it and mix a fresh batch if it hardens.

From a second section of plasterboard, score and snap two backing pieces the width of the cavity and double the height. Add one cup of powdered compound and 150ml water to a lidded container and mix with a paint scraper or broadknife to a creamy consistency.

Centre tape around the edges of the cavity, then use the broadknife to apply compound over the tape, overlapping onto the wall. Leave to dry for an hour. Smooth with 120-grit abrasive paper and a sanding block, wipe away dust and repeat. HANDY TIP Plasterboard is a sheet material made by sandwiching gypsum plaster between sheets of thick lining paper. To cut through, carefully use a utility knife to score one side. Use both hands to snap the plaster, then run the knife along the crease to cut the back

On the 42mm-square pine, mark out four legs 450mm long. On the 19mm-wide pine, mark four side rails at 900mm and four end rails at 450mm. Cut with a mitre saw. Tip: Measure and cut one of each to use as templates for the rest.
To assemble the end frames, set out pairs of legs with end rails over the top, and 120mm up from the base. Apply timber adhesive and secure through the countersunk holes with 30mm screws. Tip: Attach top rails first, ensuring they’re flush with the side legs.

With a combination square, mark holes on the side rails 40mm from the ends and on the end rails 10mm from the ends, drilling with an 8G countersinking bit. Tip: Holes should be 10mm in from the side to prevent the timber splitting.
With the end frames upside down, position side rails against the top end rails, apply timber adhesive and secure with 50mm screws, then repeat with the lower rails. Sand all over with abrasive paper, rounding over the edges. Dab superglue onto the screws and tap in the black screw caps with a hammer. a

With the completed frame upside down, run the webbing underneath lengthways, wrapping it around an end rail to staple inside the frame. Use the excess to pull the webbing taut, wrapping around the opposite rail to staple and trim with scissors. Repeat to attach five evenly spaced lengths.
PRO TIP When you’ve finished weaving the seat, spritz water onto the webbing to dampen it slightly, so the cotton shrinks and tightens as it dries

To weave widthways, thread webbing over and under the long pieces, positioning it flush against the legs at either end. Staple the ends, pull the webbing taut to wrap around the opposite rail, staple and trim. Attach webbing at the centre (a) and halfway along either side. Fill the remaining spaces by threading under then over to alternate the weave (b). ◆
