WATER WORKS

Welcome!

A showerhead upgrade can elevate your bathroom’s look as well as functionality. Make the switch from a small dripping rose to a multifunction wide sprayer in an afternoon, or hire a licensed plumber to retrofit a full rail shower set-up. Be inspired by these stylish choices.

GARDEN DIARIES Try growing elephant garlic, a larger but milder and sweeter form than regular garlic. Plant around the shortest day (June 21).

1

Winter is the best time to plant deciduous fruit trees. If your soil has a high clay content, first dig in a planting mix with gypsum to improve soil structure.

2

Help out nectar-eating native birds over winter by supplementing their

food. Set up a bird feeder and entice 3 native tūī, bellbirds and silvereyes to your garden. To promote healthy growth, prune bush and climbing roses to about half their size from mid to late winter. Leave rambling roses until late summer, after flowering. For more winter pruning tips, 4 see page 59. Move tender plants into a greenhouse to protect from frosts.

From late winter, sow seeds in pots and keep in the greenhouse until warm enough to shift outside.

5

Brighten up dull days with the sweet perfume of winterflowering shrubs. Giving your front door a refresh might be just the mini-makeover your house needs. Smarten up with a smart doorbell and lock, switch out the door pull, replace that tired old entry light and you have a whole new way to welcome visitors.* Yale ‘Smart Latch’ digital door lock, $269, I/N: 0135327

GET THE LOOK n To create a contrasting striped design, first paint the cleaned wall in the lightest colour, leaving it to dry thoroughly. n Use a spirit level and pencil to mark out straight, evenly spaced stripes and an adjustable compass to mark curves joining the ends.

n Position painter’s tape to mask just

outside the pencil lines, ripping it into small pieces to make smooth curves. n Remove pencil marks with an eraser, then paint with a brush slightly wider than the gaps, applying two coats and leaving to dry after each coat. Remove the tape as soon as you’ve finished to avoid tearing dried paint.

Use contrasting – even clashing – colours for instant impact, or opt for a softer effect with varying tones of the same hue bunnings |

OPENING UP WHAT WAS A SMALL, DATED KITCHEN BRINGS LIGHT AND COLOUR TO THE HEART OF THIS HOME Words and styling HOLLY BYRNE Photography ANNA ROBINSON

A

plain white kitchen was never on the cards for homeowners Catherine and Josh. After moving into their 1950s brick home, they wasted no time in planning their dream cook zone. Catherine wanted colour and character – and a more open-plan layout for keeping watch over their young daughters, Billie and Bobby – but didn’t want to over-invest, so the couple worked with Kaboodle Kitchen to bring their plans to life.

Measure, plan, check

After the northern wall was removed and the kitchen opened up to the adjacent dining room, the couple called in some planning help from Bunnings. “Luke from the Kitchen Design Service team measured the entire space, then within two hours he’d fully drawn up the design,” explains Catherine. “I triple checked everything by putting masking tape all over the floor and walking around the kitchen, making sure that I’d allowed enough distance between the cabinets and the island.”

“Everyone does a white kitchen, which can be beautiful, but I wanted something with more depth and character,” says Catherine, who made multiple trips in store to see products up close and to scale before locking anything in. “That was really important, because sometimes a swatch alone can be misleading – you want to see a panel of it to see how the light plays with it.” One of her visits even led to a last-minute switch of benchtops.

FRIDGE BIN ISLAND

PANTRY

“I just had this feeling, so I went into the store and saw it on a large scale, and realised the vein was too intense,” she recalls. Their final selections included a more understated marblelook engineered stone on the benchtops, splashback and shelving, paired with premium thermoformed Alpine profile cabinetry in Grey Fig.

Planning perfection

“The absolute non-negotiable was a pull-out bin, because I grew up in a household where the bins were always sitting inside a cabinet, where they got messy and would always smell,” explains Catherine. “We did not want that! Opening up the space and creating a functional kitchen island was essential. “The square shape is something different, because people often go for a rectangle island, but it also adds to the storage underneath,” says Josh. The pair opted for backto-back 600mm base cabinets with push-to-open cupboards on one side and a pull-out waste bin and drawers on the other, forgoing the counter overhang they had planned. “We had the cabinets set up, and our toddler was running around the island one day when we realised that the overhang was perfect head-height for her to hurt herself,” says Catherine.

L

ack of space is a common prompt for a laundry reno but, in the case of this unit, the issue was too much space. “You could have had four machines in there!” says homeowner Ben. “It was the sort of room you’d have for a big family.” For a two-bedroom apartment this was too much of a good thing, so the laundry was reconfigured into a cupboard tucked behind sliding doors.

Choosing Kaboodle Kitchen cabinetry was a no-brainer – the same finishes are in the enlarged kitchen/dining area, giving a sense of cohesion, plus Ben was comfortable putting it together with help from friends. “We’re the type of guys who will YouTube it until we work it out!” he says. Ben further flexed his DIY muscles, taking on the tiling, plastering and painting, to create a space that’s as good-looking as it is functional.

The maximum amount of storage was top priority when designing the space. Stacking containers help keep shelves organised

Must haves

“For me, a laundry is not a big deal,” says Ben. “I wanted a space where I could clean my footy boots!” But with an eye on the practicalities – and potential future needs – he added a few more items to the list. A washing machine and a deep sink, teamed with a gooseneck mixer, were musthaves, along with bulked-up storage. A dryer, however, didn’t make the cut. “I like the feeling of my clothes when they’ve been drying in the sun, and there’s a laundromat down the road in case of an emergency,” explains Ben.

Colour cues

With navy-toned charcoal cabinets – Kaboodle Kitchen ‘Modern’ profile in Poppy Seed – and black accents in the Kaboodle ‘Plaza’ cabinet pulls and a steel-framed shelving unit, the moody colour scheme is bang on trend, while also matching the style of the home. Ben chose lowmaintenance marble-look laminate to give the benchtop a sense of luxury without overcapitalising. 28 bunnings.co.nz |

Sense of order

When you’re dealing with a small but functional zone, good storage is important. This was front of mind when Ben designed the layout using Kaboodle Kitchen’s online 3D planner. Cabinets above and below the sink, plus a large cupboard and an industrial-style, steel-framed Kaboodle shelf unit, give plenty of stash space. Inside the cupboard, there’s lots of room for linens and miscellaneous bits and bobs, all neatly contained in lidded tubs.

Out of sight

A laundry cupboard is a fantastic space-saver when you can’t have – or don’t want – a dedicated room. Ben’s new laundry is tucked at one end of the kitchen and dining area, but you wouldn’t know it was there, with everything hidden behind neat white doors. The three-panel sliding door (custom-made to fit) is on three tracks, so it can slide to one side or the other, or stack in the middle, so every part of the laundry is accessible.

Batt for the nation Make your home a cosy haven of warmth this winter with Earthwool® glasswool insulation Be kind to the earth by choosing insulation made using recycled glass bottles

S

lash your heating bills with revolutionary insulation for walls, ceilings, roofs and under the floor. Earthwool® glasswool insulation, available from Bunnings, can help maintain warm temperatures inside your home and banish indoor chills this winter.

YOUR HOME, YOUR SANCTUARY Besides keeping you wonderfully toasty, Earthwool® glasswool insulation has sound-absorbing qualities to help make time spent indoors more tranquil. It's also completely non-combustible, for extra peace of mind. And when the weather warms up, your insulation will continue to work its magic by keeping your home cool and comfy inside.

HELP SAVE THE PLANET With updates to the New Zealand Building Code regarding energy efficiency (H1) requirements for insulating new homes, insulation now needs to have a higher R-value; as the R-value goes up, so does the insulation’s effectiveness as a thermal barrier. The goal of these updates is to help combat climate change by

reducing the energy used for heating by up to 40 per cent. Equally, if you’re adding an extension, planning a garage conversion or loft, now’s the chance to insulate, and make these spaces as snug and energy efficient as possible.

products in the range to maximise energy efficiency. Made using recycled glass bottles, it is tightly compressed into its packaging to make transport and handling a breeze. Plus, if you’re the person installing it, you will love the ECOSE® Technology binder, which makes the product super-soft and much less itchy.

KEEP UP WITH CHANGING RULES Six new climate zones have been introduced as part of the Building Code changes, but ceiling construction R-value will need to achieve at least R6.6 in all zones. A new single-layer R7.0 ceiling insulation is being developed by Earthwool® glasswool. As the changes become mandatory on November 3, there’s still time to future-proof your new build now to avoid costly modifications later this year.

Full of energy

Good insulation in the home is one of the best ways to stabilise the temperature, and improve energy efficiency. “There’s a range of insulation products suitable for pitched roofs, ceilings, external walls, internal partitions and underfloor, which work as a thermal barrier to prevent heat escaping in winter and entering in summer, and provide acoustic benefits,” says James Bedford of Knauf Insulation (Earthwool). When choosing insulation batts, look at the R-value. “The higher the R-value, the better the insulation will perform at resisting heat flow,” explains James. Some products can be installed by a confident DIYer, but wear correct protective equipment and follow safety instructions carefully.

Window of opportunity

Much of a home’s heat gain and loss is through windows so, if you’re building, plan window placement carefully. To maximise the benefits of winter sun, have the kitchen and living areas facing north, and include large windows and glazed doors where possible. Conversely, to minimise heat loss, use smaller windows on southfacing walls. As well as air leaking around windows, a lot of heat is lost through the glass. With double glazing, the sealed gap between the two panes of glass acts as a barrier to prevent heat escaping and keep cold air outside.

Drape expectations

Closing full-length, quality curtains, roller blinds or plantation shutters before the temperature drops outside will help create a cocooning effect. Generally, the thicker the window covering, the more insulating it is. Full curtains in a thick or specialised thermal fabric retain warmth, but Hamptons-style shutters work, too. Martin Wilson of EasyAs Shutters explains, “Our plantation shutters have solid blades that help contain heat in a warm room, making them a great option if you’re looking to improve your home’s thermal efficiency.” Exterior shutters can be hinged or installed on sliding systems to give an extra layer of protection from cold

Before deciding on flooring, consider the material’s thermal mass – its ability to store heat and radiate it back. Low-mass floors, such as timber, tend to heat up faster than high-mass materials like concrete, tile and stone. But once warm, high-mass floors retain heat for longer.

set the desired temperature, warming the whole room. Radiant heaters produce a direct heat that warms the immediate area, whereas convection models typically heat air and use a fan to redistribute it – a good choice for larger areas. When choosing heating, consider the size of the space, running costs, energy efficiency, heat output and requirements such as a flue and professional installation.

NEW HELP WITH HEAT RETENTION

Changes to the building code mean new homes in New Zealand are set to be warmer, drier and healthier, reducing the energy needed to heat homes by up to 40 per cent. Here are some of the key points to be rolled out over 2022-2023*.

3 6

1 Roof insulation The minimum amount of roof insulation required for new builds is double what it used to be, resulting in one of the most cost-effective ways to boost thermal performance. 2 Windows Minimum requirements for insulation levels on windows have been increased. The priority is for colder climate zones, with a staggered approach for other zones. 3 Weather-proof For high-density housing, weathertightness testing will be introduced. 4 HVAC systems There’ll be a new verification method for the energy efficiency of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. For more information, visit building.govt.nz (search for 2021 building code update).

Sleep soundly

The most important element of a good guest room is, of course, somewhere to sleep. Opt for a sofa bed or day bed, which can be used for seating on a workday and converted to a bed when visitors call.

2

Soft and sweet

Amp up the comfort factor for an inviting space – rugs underfoot, cushions and throws, potted plants and the like. You’ll also appreciate the homey touches on a regular weekday.

A tidy workspace makes for a tidy mind – and is quicker to pack up out of sight

3

Desk to impress

A slimline desk can be quickly changed into a dressing table when company calls. Choose one with a drawer to stash paperwork and keep the surface clear when not in use.

W

ith hybrid working here to stay, it’s likely that if there’s a spare room in your house, it will be used as a home office between visitors. Why not plan the space as a multitasking hero, able to switch easily between functional workspace and welcoming guest room in the time it takes visitors to unload their suitcases from the car?

1

4

Stock one side of the wardrobe with guest essentials, like spare toiletries

Take a seat

A cushioned office chair in a nice fabric or pretty colour sets a softer tone for an office-meets-bedroom. Or just swap out the study seat for an occasional chair for instant relaxation.

5

Hang tight

Centre a sturdy wall hook over the desk and use it to hang a pinboard for workdays, then swap that for a mirror to complete a welcoming guest room dressing table set-up.

6

Box it up

From paperwork to Post-its, pens to devices, pack it all away in neat, lidded boxes after work. If guests call at short notice, you can stack the boxes out of the way in seconds.

7

Split the difference

Divide the wardrobe to define the double-duty nature of the room. Reserve one side for your guests’ needs, keeping hanging rails free for their clothes and tucking linens (towels, a blanket for cold nights) into drawers. The other side can be kept for speedily stashing work clutter.

Keep the layout

When renovating, retaining the same bathroom footprint and layout can save big bucks. Keep load-bearing walls where they are, and avoid moving the location of plumbing or electrical fixtures. If you can keep all the plumbing to one wall, even better. Your tradies can give you a real idea of what your proposed changes might cost, and if there might be workable alternatives.

FAST FIXES

Replace tapware This is a quick price-friendly fix with big impact. Select the basin mixer first, then the shower and bathroom accessories with complementary shapes to create a cohesive look. Tackle old grout and silicone If the tiles are in good condition, removing and replacing the grout will help to give the whole room a fresh, clean look. Power of paint From the floors to the ceiling, vanity to the bathtub, paint can make a big change. Choose coatings suitable for a wet space and appropriate for the surface.

Spend and save

Trim costs on big-ticket items, without compromising on style. Vanity If your vanity can’t be revived, this is an item to invest in. Not only is it used frequently, but it is also often the bathroom’s focal point, so a new one will have major impact on the way the whole space looks and feels. Tiles Replace chipped and cracked tiles and, if they’re in good nick but the pattern is dated, consider painting them. If new ones are needed, you could tile just the wet zones, such as the shower, around the bath and behind the vanity, and paint the remaining areas.

bunnings

Keep in mind... Plumbing and electrical works must be done by a licensed tradie. Ensure you do your research. n Check with your local council for waterproofing guidelines and regulations. n

Electricals Focus on the necessities. Prioritise lighting options for daily tasks, such as shaving. Invest in good ventilation, to help prevent mildew, mould and odours. If possible, add a heated towel rail for warmth. Toilet A quality loo will pay dividends in good looks, ease of living and water usage (view the WELS rating; the more stars, the more water efficient it is). Flooring Ceramic tiles are hardy and can imitate expensive stone. Laminate

Budget-friendly laminate is “a fuse of melamine resin as the bottom layer, a photographic imprint of timber in the middle and a clear protective layer on top,” says renovation expert Cherie Barber. ‘Click-together’ technology makes it relatively easy to install, and it can even sit on existing flooring. Premium options include acoustic underlay and water, scratch, stain and burn resistance. Most laminates are not suitable for bathrooms and laundries.

GIVE YOUR HOME A FAST AND FRESH MAKEOVER, STARTING FROM THE GROUND UP Words HOLLY BYRNE

inter is the perfect time to take stock of the state of your home, especially as you’re likely to be indoors a lot. If your floors are looking a little worse for wear, giving them a refresh might actually be easier than you imagine.

FLOOR FINDING TIPS

• Stay true to the style of the rest of your home. • “Ask yourself where the floor is being laid, how durable it needs to be, and if it will be flowing through multiple rooms,” says Bunnings flooring buyer Kym Macdonald. • “Your old carpet may be higher than your new flooring, so it’s likely your old skirting boards will need to come off as well,” says Cherie.

INTERIOR FLOORING

Vinyl

Sheets can be tricky but, with a clean and level floor, vinyl tiles and planks are DIY friendly. “Vinyl tiles are like a sticker – you just rip the paper off the back then place them on your floor,” says Cherie. Many products can be used in the bathroom and laundry, using self-levelling compound to lay them neatly over tiles. Vinyl is easy-clean but can scratch or tear and discolour in direct sunlight. 

All you need to achieve an instant facelift with vinyl planks is a utility knife and a clean, level floor

Solid timber

While installation of a new solid timber floor is best left to the professionals, bringing existing boards back to life is a task you can take on. “Real hardwood flooring can be sanded many times over,” says Cherie Barber. Sanding, staining and sealing floorboards yourself is cost-effective, but you’ll need to allow 3-6 days to complete the project. Expect to pay around $60 per four hours to hire a floor sander, and don’t forget to factor in the cost of supplies such as sandpaper, sealer and applicators. Hybrid floor planks can be used in rooms prone to splashes, such as bathrooms and laundries. Most hybrid products are scratch- and stain-resistant and easy to maintain – the waterproof core means they can be wet mopped – while the click system makes installation straightforward. They won’t buckle under direct sunlight and are compatible with underfloor heating.

Keep in mind... When sanding floorboards, always wear safety gear (work boots, mask and eye protection). n Ensure the room is adequately ventilated, particularly when applying stains and sealers. n

Rugs

When new flooring isn’t an option, rely on rugs, even over carpet – they’re perfect for hiding marks. They also protect and soften hard floors, and are a great choice for amping up the cosiness in bedrooms in the colder months. In the living room, your rug should reach under furniture, grouping it together, while in the bedroom, choose one large enough to fit under the bed with a minimum 60cm clearance all around.

Feature pendants can help define zones, like an island breakfast bar

Plan your approach

On any build or renovation, lighting placement must be considered early, says interior designer James Treble, not just because an electrical fit-out is much easier before the walls and ceilings are finished. “Creating a successful and practical lighting plan requires consideration of issues such as how each room will be used,” says James. “Most importantly, ensure you include a well-balanced mix of the different lighting types: ambient, task and feature (or accent).”

Looking down

Downlights (or recessed lights) are an unobtrusive way to illuminate large living areas. Too many in one space can make it feel bare and uninviting, so mix it up with other forms and add dimmers for ambience.

Take it to task

Love an accent

Accent lighting is used to emphasise specific features, making them the focal point of the room. “Accent or feature light pieces are the perfect addition in an entry foyer, above a stair void and above a dining table – they draw attention to the space and elevate their importance, literally ‘highlighting’ them,” says James.

Off the wall

“Sconce lighting [wall lighting] is huge right now, and they’re not just for hallways,” says Sharon Breeze of Brilliant Lighting. “Consider using them as bedside lights, a statement for either side of the fireplace or vanity, or on side walls for ambient mood lighting.”

“Avoid including pendant lights in traffic areas or above moveable furniture, as they tend to hang quite low and can become a safety issue” James Treble, interior designer

Keep in mind... n Hardwired electrical work must be carried out by a licensed tradie.

Adjustable wall-mounted lamps are a great choice for a reading corner

Task lighting is brighter and more targeted, for cooking or reading, or for safety and security. Think lighting above the cooktop, undercabinet strip lighting and downlights to help prepare food, or step lighting for stairs. Task lamps (floor or table) are ideal for a home office, or for a living room reading corner.

In suspense

7

Pendants bring character into a home, says Sharon. “They can form a wonderful canopy, as well as task lighting, for your kitchen bench – fit with warm colour temperature globes for casual bench dinners or chats over a cup of tea,” she suggests. A statement pendant over a dining table creates an intimate atmosphere. As long as they’re not positioned close to water outlets, they can work well in bathrooms, too. “One pendant light to the side of the basin adds personality – it’s perfect for a powder room,” says James. “One on either side of a vanity mirror provides balanced lighting that’s perfect for pampering.”

WARM AND COOL GLOBES

Warm light creates a cosy glow, enhances a room’s atmosphere and is great for bedrooms and dining areas. White or cool light has a cleaner look and is said to help energise an area, so is ideal for a workspace. Light temperature is measured in kelvin (K), typically ranging from 2700K (soft, warm) to 6500K (cool daylight).

CHECK OUT THE TECH GIZMOS THAT CAN ACTUALLY IMPROVE YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE

Words ADAM TURNER

T

he latest smart home gadgets are designed to genuinely make your life easier. From speakers and lights, to security cameras and locks, there’s a gadget for every room and every occasion. Here are our top picks for your shopping list.

1

Speakers

The real trick is uniting smart devices into a truly smart home, says Alex Kidman, co-host of the podcast Vertical Hold: Behind the Tech News. The modern home is built around smart speakers from the likes of Google, Apple and Amazon. These bring to life smart assistants like Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. If you already own Amazon Echo, Google Nest or Apple

HomePod speakers with a built-in smart assistant, look for compatible gadgets. “This way you’re not tied to a single brand of smart home gear – you can mix and match if it’s all compatible with your smart assistant,” explains Alex. “Think of your smart assistant like a digital butler which orders around your other smart devices, so you’re not constantly reaching for your smartphone – simply tell your assistant to turn up the music or turn down the lights, and it takes care of the rest.”

Smart lights and light globes let you set the mood by changing their colour, shade and brightness. You can also connect them to sensors and put them on timers so the house looks lived-in while you’re away. Smart assistants are clever enough to know which room your lights are in, so you can say “Turn off the lights” as you leave a room or “Turn off all the lights” at bedtime.

3

Sensors

Smart sensors notify you when something moves, or a door or window opens, and can be used for security or to trigger events, like turning on a smart device. It’s important to fine-tune the sensor’s sensitivity, says Alex. “While you definitely want to know if criminals are about, you don’t want your phone to ping every time a cat crosses your yard or a magpie flies through the carport!”

4

Plugs

Smart plugs turn any device into a smart device, so you can control it from afar. Setting them up is simple; for example, plug your bedside lamp into a smart plug, and the smart plug into the wall, and always leave the lamp and wall switch turned on. To control the lamp, ask your smart assistant to turn the plug on and off.

“Make sure you have a decent router to protect your tech, but also to keep up the internet speed with all those gadgets in your life” Leigh Stark, tech expert

Doorbells

Smart doorbells send smartphone notifications when someone presses the button, so you can check who’s at the door and talk to them. Some can even tell you when someone leaves a parcel but doesn’t ring the bell. Doorbells may be battery-powered or wired in. “Choose with care, as you might need a licensed electrician,” says Alex. “Rechargeable smart doorbells are handy if you’re renting.”

7

3

Security cameras

Smart cameras are an invaluable security tool, instantly letting you know when something is awry. They can be installed inside and outside, with battery- and solar-powered options for hard-toreach places. “You can see the view from your cameras on the smart screens around your home, or on your smartphone even when you’re out,” says tech expert Leigh Stark. “Along with spotting uninvited guests, they’re great for checking on children and pets.” Many cameras have a built-in speaker and microphone, handy for giving instructions to couriers or tradies.

6

2

Door locks

Smart locks can be retrofitted to your door. To get inside, you enter a code or simply wave your smartphone at the lock. “These clever locks don’t just offer the convenience of unlocking the door when your hands are full,” says Leigh. “Some let you securely share access to your home with other people, giving them a code to punch in, rather than a physical key. With a smart lock, you can check whether your loved ones have returned home safely, as well as know exactly when anyone else unlocks the door.” 56 bunnings.co.nz |

WINTER READY

TAKE THE EDGE OFF THE CHILLY SEASON BY PREPARING YOUR OUTDOOR AREAS NOW Words TAMMY HUYNH

arly winter is a great time to give your backyard a tidy up and prepare it for the season ahead. Ticking off these little jobs will make a big difference in helping plants, tools and outdoor surfaces survive the cold season and come back to life in spring.

Stop the spread

Check the garden for any dead or dying plants. Their weakened state makes them more susceptible to pests and diseases, so remove and put in the compost or green waste bins. Also tidy up perennial shrubs and remove diseased plant growth, says Sue Edwards of Seasol. “Deadhead spent blooms and cut off foliage affected by black spot or mildew to prevent further spread,” she says. But don’t add diseased foliage to the compost.

Read it! Weed and reap

“Remove emerging weeds before they mature – ensure you take out the entire weed including the roots,” says Sue. “Hand weeding can be very effective for small areas, but large areas call for a garden hoe.” If weeds are numerous, consider an organic weedkiller spray – but take care when using around plants you want to keep.

Waste not, want not

Compost is a great soil conditioner – dig it into garden beds when it’s become crumbly and dark brown

Go to ground

To cultivate a robust base, organic matter is key, says horticulturist Chloe Foster. “Top up existing and recently cleared garden beds with organic matter,” she says. This may be in the form of compost, blood and bone or aged animal manures. As they break down, they improve soil structure and moisture retention. Plus, nutrients are slowly released, giving plants a gentle feed. Chloe also recommends spreading organic mulch over any bare spots. “This will help insulate the soil from the cold weather,” she says. 60 bunnings.co.nz |

Mischief managed

“Now is a great time to take stock of your garden shed,” says Sue. “Remove old pots, empty bags of potting mix into existing garden beds and spread mulch around the garden.” Give the shed a good sweep so it’s ready for activity once warmer weather arrives.

Tackle your garden tools

“Use steel wool and methylated spirits to clean and disinfect your secateur blades,” says Chloe. Follow up with a whetstone or diamond sharpener to keep edges sharp, and spray moving parts – springs and blades, for example – with a lubricating oil.

FOR MORE ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF COMPOST, TURN TO PAGE 62

Fruit and vege scraps, cardboard, newspaper, fallen leaves, lawn clippings and non-diseased garden trimmings can all be added to the compost. To aerate it and improve the rate of decomposition, regularly turn the heap with a garden fork; if your compost is in a static bin, using a compost aerating tool might be easier. Rotating a tumbler often will help to accelerate the breakdown.

3 When pruning roses, use secateurs to trim unwanted stems and sterilise the blades between cuts

To maintain larger tools, such as spades, shovels and hoes, remove dirt from surfaces and use a metal file to sharpen the edges. “Apply linseed oil to the handles as this will help extend the life of the timber,” adds Chloe.

Prune for perfection

As the winter months roll on, deciduous plants become dormant and may require pruning. Fruit trees such as apple, pear, peach and plum will need a good clip back to encourage fruit production (and make harvesting easier!) In mid to late winter, prune off dead, diseased, spindly or inwardgrowing stems of roses. In late winter, prune autumn-fruiting raspberries back to ground level, and summerfruiting raspberries back to fresh buds. Always prune on a dry day to reduce the risk of spreading fungal and bacterial diseases. Use super sharp tools for clean cuts and prune on an angle (so any water runs off), just above a bud on the outside of a stem. Remove dead and diseased areas first, then shape as desired, but don’t cut back more than about a third. To ward off infections post pruning, and before buds form, spray roses and deciduous fruit trees with a copper-based fungicide. If you’re a beginner, don’t be too worried about misjudged cuts – roses, for example, are resilient and can bounce back.

TRASH TO TREASURE TURN HOUSEHOLD WASTE INTO A GARDEN HELPER WITH THESE EASY COMPOSTING TIPS Words TAMMY HUYNH

W

e all know we can do more to reduce household waste, and one easy – and productive – way to cut down your rubbish is by composting. “It’s the natural process of recycling organic waste into a nutrient-rich fertiliser for the garden,” says compost expert Kate Flood (@compostable.kate). This improves the soil and helps it hold moisture and nutrients, enhancing the overall growing conditions for your plants. “It’s about finding a compost solution for your space and lifestyle,” adds Kate. 62 bunnings.co.nz |

bunningsnz |

Compost options

Your choice of composting system comes down to the type of waste you have, and available space. Traditional composting involves layering a mix of food, household and garden waste in an above-ground bin or tumbler, but if you have mostly kitchen scraps, it’s best to choose a worm farm or bokashi bin. These are great if you’re time-poor, explains Kate. “It’s as easy as throwing scraps in a rubbish bin,” she says. A bokashi bin can be kept in the kitchen, where it breaks down food through fermentation by bacteria, while a worm farm should be outdoors

DO IT Composting is about balance – don’t overload your heap with too much of any one kind of waste. It’s fine to add citrus, onion and eucalyptus leaves, just not in great quantities or too often

(or in a garage or basement) in a cool, shaded spot. Above-ground bins are ideal if you have the room. “You can process more food scraps and large amounts of garden waste,” says Kate. Position bins or tumblers in an easily accessible spot – a shadier setting will help the compost stay moist, while direct sun will speed up the process.

Recipe for success

The type of waste is important. You need alternating layers of nitrogenbased (green) and carbon-based (brown) materials. Greens include food scraps, grass clippings and garden trimmings; browns include small twigs and branches, straw, newspaper, and non-glossy paper or cardboard. Tear up materials into small pieces to help increase the rate of decomposition. Introduce oxygen by aerating your compost regularly, says Chantel Brillantes of Tumbleweed. “Aeration promotes microbial activity, which helps break down the materials faster,” she explains. Use a compost aerator to easily bring air into the mix. A moist environment allows microbes to flourish, adds Chantel. “Only a small amount of water is required – not too

wet and not too dry,” she says. For the perfect compost, Kate recommends one part green to two parts brown; aerate frequently and maintain moisture levels. “The result of this recipe turns a waste problem into a garden solution,” she says.

SHOP 1 2

Garden gold

Don’t rely on time as a measure of compost maturity, says Chantel. “The time varies between systems – a compost bin can be ready in as little as four weeks, but a worm farm can take three to six months,” she explains. Instead, judge it by how it looks, feels and even smells. “Compost is ready for use when it becomes dark brown, crumbly and has an earthy smell,” says Kate. “It also needs to be cool to touch – if it’s hotter than ambient outdoor temperature, it needs to rest before use.”

Keep in mind... Always wear a mask and gloves when handling compost, mulch or potting mix. n Store all garden chemicals out of the reach of children and pets. n

Building

If you’re handy with a hammer and nails, it’s understandable that you’d want to tackle building work in your own home, says Auckland Master Builders president Tony Pexton. But before you undertake anything more than a simple maintenance or repair job, you need to make sure it’s not classified under law as Restricted Building Work. Any jobs that come under this category have to be carried out by a licensed building practitioner (LBP). Restricted Building Work includes jobs that require building consent, or that affect a home’s weather resistance, certain fire safety designs or primary structures. “Primary structures means foundations, framing, roofing or cladding – so that covers a lot of things,” says Tony. Even work you are usually permitted to do may need expert input, depending on the circumstances of the job and your expertise. “If you are taking out an old window in a villa and putting in a new one in the same place, that is permitted, but you still need to make sure you are doing it to code, and it has the right flashings, for example,” says Tony. There may be serious – not to mention costly – repercussions if you do something incorrectly. And when you come to sell your property, you have to tell the real estate agent and potential buyers about work that has been done.

PRO TIP

ALWAYS CHECK LEGALITIES AS WELL AS YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL REGULATIONS BEFORE UNDERTAKING ANY DIY JOBS, PARTICULARLY BUILDING, PLUMBING OR ELECTRICAL WORK

Be aware that scaffolding over 5m high must be erected by a certified scaffolder

Do your research and, if you’re still in doubt, get professional advice

Use caution when tackling lighting: hardwired lights are subject to restrictions

Electrical

There are firm restrictions around what electrical work you can do yourself. “Put simply, electricity can kill,” says Bernie McLaughlin, chief executive of Master Electricians New Zealand. The Electrical Code of Practice outlines what a homeowner can and can’t do. The word ‘homeowner’ is crucial, says Bernie: “You not only have to own the premises, but you actually have to live there. So you can’t do any work yourself if you’re the

landlord or tenant.” You mustn’t do anything that involves working on a switchboard and connecting to the electricity supply. Plus, Bernie adds, “Nothing can be livened without the work being signed off by an electrical inspector.” Bernie advises that even if you’re allowed to do a job, think hard about whether you have the skills: “There’s a big danger factor with electricity, so if you’re not sure, get an expert.”

DID YOU KNOW?

P lumbing

DIYers can find themselves in hot water if they don’t follow the legislation. Strict rules are in place as there may be serious health and safety repercussions if something goes wrong, such as undetected leaks or cross-contamination between sewerage and stormwater outlets. Because your property is connected to the neighbourhood water supply, plumbing work you carry out can affect the wider community. According to the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006, any work that involves sanitary plumbing must be carried out by a licensed plumber. That includes installing fixtures like toilets, sinks and showers, the pipes that supply water to them and the associated traps, waste, soil, ventilation and overflow pipes. Similarly, you need to get a licensed plumber in if any work is being done to the potable (drinking) water supply. If qualified tradespeople aren’t involved, your insurance can be invalidated, and it might make it difficult to sell your property in the future. While fitting an LPG cylinder to a barbecue or patio heater is fine, it’s illegal to install gas appliances such as a gas fireplace, water heating, oven, cooktop or heating system – all work of this nature must be done by a licensed gas fitter.

BUNNINGS OFFERS A RANGE OF ASSEMBLY, ASSESSMENT AND INSTALLATION SERVICES. ASK A TEAM MEMBER OR VISIT THE SPECIAL ORDERS DESK‡

Not only is it sensible to leave some jobs to a professional, but in some cases it is illegal to do certain work if you are not a licensed electrician, plumber or building practitioner. If you do have a go at restricted work yourself, you could face an expensive fine, and if it all goes horribly wrong, your insurance company may not pay out. Of course, it could also prove dangerous – particularly where hardwired electrics are involved. Don’t start a job yourself before checking out whether you’re permitted to do it, advises Tony Pexton. “The days of grabbing a hammer and having a crack are long gone,” he says. “The legislation we have these days means there are jobs that have to be done by a professional or you could end up in trouble. If in doubt, check it out.”

1 Using a mitre saw, cut eight 2400mm lengths of quad moulding into equal halves and cut 100mm PVC pipe to 1180mm long. Note: Adjust the moulding lengths to match the height of your floor lamp, cutting the pipe 20mm shorter.

2 To make a pencil jig on a 250mm length of pine, mark 50mm from one end for a nail, then drill through at 100mm and 200mm from the same end with an 8mm bit. Nail the jig to an MDF panel to mark a circle at 200mm, then move it to mark two more at 100mm.

3 Use a jigsaw to cut out the large and one small circle for the base. Cut the remaining small circle 2mm outside the mark for the stand cover. Drill through all three nail holes with a 51mm holesaw. Tip: Place offcuts underneath to avoid damaging the work surface.

5 Hook 300mm bungee cords around the top and base, wrapping them firmly to hold the moulding in place. Apply adhesive around the top of the pipe and inside the moulding, position the stand cover, press down firmly and leave to dry thoroughly.

6 Centre the base circles together, pre-drilling three holes into the top with a 3mm bit, securing with 25mm screws. Apply adhesive over the top of the lamp stand base, slot the circle base over the lamp, press down firmly and leave to dry.

7 Mask over the cord, switch and socket with painter’s tape. Remove the bungee cords and apply primer over the new cover and base, leaving to dry. Apply two coats of interior paint, leaving to dry after each coat. Remove the tape, then install a shade and globe.

1 With a circular saw, cut two MDF panels to 1600mm as the front and back. From another panel, cut two 1600mm x 20mm sides and a 360mm x 20mm top and base. For the front cutout, mark lines 70mm in from the top and sides, then 130mm down and in.

2 At the base, mark a line 370mm up, then 130mm up and in from the lines. Make a cardboard jig with the nail hole and pencil hole 130mm apart. Nail the jig to each 130mm mark to set out the top and base arches.

3 Clamp the front panel on sawhorses to drill a starter hole with a 10mm bit just inside the cutout, and complete the cut with a jigsaw. Smooth around the inside edges of the arch using a drill with a 120-grit sanding flap wheel.

4 To make a frame, apply timber adhesive along the side, top and base pieces, position them flush with the edge of the front panel and secure with 30mm bullet head nails. Smooth the edges with 180-grit abrasive paper and wipe away dust with a damp cloth.

5 Use a mini roller to apply a primer over the back and front panels and around all edges, leaving to dry. Use the clean roller to apply two coats of water-based enamel, leaving to dry after each.

6 With the frame right-side down, dab mirror construction adhesive around the cutout, centre the mirror and clamp to dry. Apply timber adhesive around the frame, centre the back panel and secure with nails. Put in place with a safety furniture anchor, following the instructions to suit your wall type.

PLANTS

SAVOURY SUPERSTARS

Flavour bombs Plant these in the backyard for taste on tap in the kitchen

Garlic

This bulb is available in two forms: soft-necked and hard-necked. The former is ideal for warmer climates as it doesn’t need as long a chill period as the hard-necked variety, which grows better in cold zones. Separate bulbs into individual cloves – don’t remove the ‘skin’ – and plant pointy end up in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Cover with soil, so the tops are just below the surface, and water when germinated.

Garlic

Coriander

Coriander

This pungent herb will thrive in full sun or part shade and well-draining soil improved with compost. Plant seedlings, or scatter seeds, lightly cover and water in well. Keep soil moist during the growing season and liquid feed regularly.

(Allium sativum)

(Coriandrum sativum)

Garlic is ready to harvest when the leaves start to die down, from 8-9 months after planting.

After about 6 weeks, pick leaves as needed – you can also use the stems, roots and seeds.

Curly leaf parsley

Spring (or green) onion

There are two forms of this leafy herb commonly grown here: flat leaf or Italian parsley, which likes full sun, and curly leaf parsley, which has a slightly more robust flavour and does best in part shade. Harvest outer stalks often to encourage more shoots and leaves.

Spring (or green) onion

These are not immature onions and don’t form a true bulb. Instead, they have hollow stalks with stringy roots and a milder flavour. Plant in welldraining soil in full sun or part shade. Sow seed every 3-4 weeks for a continuous supply. FOR MORE PLANTS, VISIT bunnings.co.nz/plants

(Allium fistulosum)

Harvest whole or treat as ‘cutand-come-again’ by snipping the stems so the plants can regrow.
