WINBURG: Cleaning-up campaigns, surprisingly done by candidates themselves, food parcel handouts, ‘lack-ofservice-delivery’ statements and colourful gazebo’s on street corners can now be found around every corner of Free State municipalities, as several political parties prepare themselves for the upcoming municipal elections this year. This week, voters were motivated to register themselves, either online or this coming weekend at a register-point, in order to be able the make their cross next to the party of choice during the elections with will be held on 1 November 2021. Pointing a finger to another party’s shortfalls is also and unfortunately inevitable. Recently news reporters have been made attentive about one specific situation that previously received a great amount of media attention, but was swapped under the carpet in search for something else, but is now again placed right under the spotlight; the situation in the town Winburg here in the Masilonyana Local Municipality. One news reporter wrote on Thursday 16 September 2021: “Vandals have ravaged the Winburg sports complex, reducing buildings and pavilion to a heap of rubble. Not only has the Masilonyana municipality, here in the Free State allowed the buildings of the Winburg sports complex to be stripped and looted by vandals, but they have also apparently already spent R8.5 million on the construction of another unused stadium nearby, and want more money to complete it. Construction of the second stadium started in January 2013 but came to a halt when it was discovered that the contractor was doing shoddy work. This led to the contract being terminated and the project’s consultant took over the work in a-sub-contract.” Can this just again be whipped from your shoulders as being categorized as being ‘election-fever’ or is this an issue that needs to urgently be addressed?

Ek is groter as jou oorloë, Ek is groter as jou sorge en bekommernis. By My sal jy rus vind, kies dit so nou en dan en luister eerder na My stem as die oorlog wat om jou woed. As jy bang is, kom kruip styf teen My bors vas, Ek is met jou, al die dae van jou lewe. "Hy laat my neerlê in groen weivelde; na waters waar rus is, lei Hy my heen." (Ps. 23:2)

The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still. Exodus 14:14

700+ SAYS “NO!” TO NAME-CHANGE OF BRANDFORT SABC News BRANDFORT: The DA in the Free State has filed a petition with more than 700 signatures against the renaming of Brandfort to Winnie Mandela. Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, gazetted the name change over a month ago. This is part of preserving the legacy of all freedom fighters. The late struggle stalwart, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, was banished to the sprawling town of Brandfort in 1977. She lived there for almost nine years. Those who are opposed to the name change, say the government should be focusing its financial resources on improving service delivery. Issues raised include a lack of basic water supply, sewer spills, and poor infrastructure. Local businessman and resident Frans Posthumus, “Name change is actually the last thing in Brandfort that needs to be rectified. Sewer problems, electricity problems, account problems, roads, lack of people with necessary qualifications, it’s our big problem here in Brandfort. I think if they can rather build a Winnie Mandela Clinic – that’s something for the community. That will be more worthwhile than changing the name.” These residents feel that public consultation was inadequate and have echoed the sentiments of Posthumus. “I don’t like it very much because Brandfort has a unique history. So, I really don’t think it’s a great idea. For me, it’ll always stay Brandfort,” says one resident. “I’m not feeling very well because they didn’t consult us. They change our town into Winnie Mandela’s names,” says another resident. “The infrastructure of this place is gone. There’s no infrastructure. If they can just use the money to fix the roads … even the City

Hall is gone. There are no windows in the City Hall.” A close friend of Winnie Madikizela Mandela’s in the 1970s, and former primary school teacher in Brandfort, Nora Moahloli, explains what makes them unhappy… “We are not happy, ntate! The reason is when starting this, they promised that – even when writing the letters asking for permission to use the name – they said it’s going to be from Masilonyana to Winnie Madikizela Mandela, but all of a sudden now, they are saying Brandfort to Winnie Madikizela Mandela. It’s not nice. It doesn’t sound well.” The DA has emphasized that it is waiting for the reaction from Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa. DA’s councillor in Masilonyana Local Municipality, Marieta Visser, says, “It is now more than a month since we officially launched a request for the documents to prove that public participation did take place. But there’s no reaction from the minister, province, or nobody (sic). More than 700 people signed the petition to say that they were not informed about this process. People tell us that there’s a lot of things that they want to change, but not the name of Brandfort. We’ll now have to wait for the minister to react to our request for public participation.” The FF Plus’ Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature, Armand Cloete, says the minister is driving this issue to change the name to hide the fact that the ANC has not delivered on its promises. He says it’s nothing but political populism. “The whole process rigs of political populism in the sense that, according to the legislation, there should be public participation and then the authority should listen to the community. We know that

06

this will cost a lot of money to taxpayers and it affected different spheres of government and that municipality does have that money.” The EFF, however, supports the renaming. But as for basic service delivery, the party’s chairperson in the Free State, Mandisa Makesini, does not mince her words. “We hope it is not only the electioneering machinery to convince the people of Brandfort to vote for them. The people of Brandfort are still suffering. They don’t have toilets, water, houses. They are still unemployed. They will have to make sure that they change the lives of the people of Brandfort completely. The people of Brandfort deserve better because that town is named after Mama Winnie.” Meanwhile, the ANC in the Free State says it stands by the community’s wish to see the name changed to Winnie Mandela. A spokesperson for ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) Oupa Khoabane, says, “As the ANC, we agree with the people of Brandfort who want the name to be changed to Winnie Mandela. We believe that those who are against that are those people who don’t want to see any change and who don’t want to identify themselves with the changing history. So, we really support (the move) because it’s an issue that was demanded by the people of that place, that Brandfort be changed to Winnie Mandela.” The Department of Arts and Culture says all objections have been referred to the South African Geographical Names Council. The minister is expected to respond to the objections later.

NESCAFÉ RICOFFY celebrates all things South African as the brand turns 50 Iconic South African brand NESCAFÉ RICOFFY celebrates its 50th birthday this year. To celebrate the occasion the brand honours South Africa’s heritage through a campaign that encourages all South Africans to celebrate our uniqueness. The campaign has a number of exciting elements, each of which puts the spotlight on the beauty of South Africa and NESCAFÉ RICOFFY’s proudly South African heritage. As part of its birthday celebration the brand has over the last months, asked South Africans to co-create with them and share the words and phrases that celebrate our idiosyncratic ways that make us South African – what the brand is calling ‘South Africanises; These words were then used to create a one of a kind MZANSAY keyboard which will allow users to send predictive text that incorporates unique South African words and phrases. A celebration of the country’s unique and authentic language, the keyboard is available for download from the App Store or any Android or IOS device. “Uniquely South African expressions often get lost, misunderstood and misinterpreted with autocorrect and predictive text,” explains Nicole Roos, Business Executive Officer, Coffee and Beverages at Nestlé. “We’re solving this problem with the launch of the Mzansay Keyboard which allows people to connect in a natural way,

allowing people to have fun and communicate in a genuinely South African way. It’s about celebrating our unique expressions. “The keyboard has been developed with the help of contributions of uniquely South African words, expressions, sayings, colloquialisms, sounds, gestures and even hand signals from South Africans across all walks of life. Social media influencers and celebrities have been encouraging their audiences to contribute suggestions. Over six thousand words have been contributed to date. In addition to the Mzansay Keyboard, NESCAFÉ RICOFFY will release a limited-edition heritage tin which celebrates 50 years of South Africanises, designed by renowned South African illustrator Karabo Poppy. Launched during Heritage Month, the limited release tin will be available at retail outlets from the month of September. “Being part of such a truly iconic South African brand’s 50th birthday celebrations are very exciting,” says Poppy, revealing that the tin’s design incorporates unique South Africanisms such as ‘Eita’ and ‘lekker’ as well as a theme of currency to express the country – and the brand’s – long and rich heritage. The final element of NESCAFÉ RICOFFY’s 50th birthday celebrations include a collaboration between the brand and acclaimed South African

designer Gert Johan Coetzee. The latter has designed a fabric bucket hat which will include a selection of words and phrases from the Mzansay Keyboard. The hat, promises to be the most coveted summer must-have item. “South Africans have been through a tough time in the past 18 months,” says Roos yet again we have shown our tenacity and humour through it all. We are a resilient nation, connected by our ability to find humour in even the most difficult and challenging situations. The uniquely South African way we have of describing these situations is something that has previously escaped predictive texts. That changes with the launch of NESCAFÉ RICOFFY’s Mzansay Keyboard which allows us to celebrate and embrace our South Africanises.” NESCAFÉ RICOFFY, the first coffee and chicory mixture to be introduced to the country, has over the years become a staple in many South African households. NESCAFÉ RICOFFY joined the NECAFÉ family in 2002 and is a well-entrenched and much-loved brand in South Africa’s coffee culture. Visit the website, www.nescafe-ricoffy.co.za or the brand social media pages @NescafeRicoffysa to be part of the birthday celebrations.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 2021 01 – 30 September September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and is symbolized by a gold ribbon, worn to commemorate the event. This is an annual international awareness month to raise support, funding and awareness of childhood cancers and the impact for sufferers and families of sufferers of childhood cancer.

What Is Pediatric Cancer? Cancer is uncommon in children but can happen. The most common childhood cancers are: Leukemia. The most common cancer in children is acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Lymphoma, brain cancer. In teens, osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Pediatric, or childhood, cancers and how they're treated have important differences from cancers that adults get, such as the things that cause cancer in kids usually differ from those that cause cancer in adults (for example, smoking). Kids usually respond well to treatment. Most kids with cancer get better. Side effects of cancer treatments can be more severe and longer-lasting. Children who have had cancer will need careful medical follow-up for the rest of their lives. Why Do Kids Get Cancer? Most of the time, doctors don't know why kids get cancer. In children, a genetic condition, such as Down syndrome, can sometimes increase the risk of cancer. Kids who have had chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer are more likely to get cancer again. But most cases of childhood cancer happen because of random mutations (changes) in the genes of growing cells. Because these changes happen randomly, there is no effective way to prevent them. How Is Cancer Treated? Getting treatment at a medical center that specializes in pediatric oncology (treatment of childhood cancer) can help kids with cancer get the best care. The treatment of cancer in children can include: surgery: removing cancerous cells or tumors, chemotherapy: using medical drugs to kill cancer cells, radiation therapy: using radiant energy to kill cancer cells, bone marrow (stem cell) transplant: putting healthy stem cells into the bloodstream so they can make healthy new blood, bone marrow, and immune system cells. Doctors may use one or more of these treatments for a child who has cancer. The type of treatment needed depends on the child's age, the type of cancer, and how severe the cancer is. How Can Parents Help? The main goal when treating kids with cancer is to cure them. While treatment may cause side effects, many medicines and therapies can make kids more comfortable while they're treated for cancer. When possible, involve kids with their own cancer treatment. Use language your child will understand and explain the facts about cancer and its effects. With a younger child — toddlers and those younger than age 4 — saying that they are "sick" and need "medicine" to get better can be enough of an explanation. For all age groups, the goal is to prevent fear and misunderstanding. Many kids might feel guilty as if the cancer is somehow their fault. Psychologists, social workers, and other members of the cancer treatment team can be a great help in reassuring them and helping them cope with their feelings. Having a child being treated for cancer can feel overwhelming for any family. But you're not alone. To find support, talk to anyone on the care team or a hospital social worker. Many resources are available to help you and your child.

Elections 2021 ■ CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK

CITIZENS URGED TO COLLECT IDS FROM HOME AFFAIRS AHEAD OF LOCAL ELECTIONS Parliament has urged the public to collect their IDs from the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) so they can register and vote in the upcoming local government elections. The call comes ahead of voter registration weekend, which will take place on 18-19 September. ‘Satisfied’ - The portfolio committee on home affairs and the select committee on security and justice, which was recently briefed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), expressed its satisfaction that the commission was ready to deliver free and fair elections despite the constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. “The committees noted that the 2021 local elections will occur at an extremely difficult time when the third wave of Covid-19 infections is still ravaging some provinces. “As a result, the committee has called the IEC to strengthen non-pharmaceutical Interventions, such as social distancing and availability of personal protective equipment [PPE] to safeguard electoral staff against infections,” parliamentary spokesperson Malatswa Molepo said in a statement. The committee welcomed the scheduled voter registration weekend, as well as the procurement of 40,000 new voter management devices, which will be used for the first time during the upcoming elections. IDs- While the Department of Home Affairs continues to issue new IDs and temporary identification certificates to enable people to register and vote during the elections, the committees urged the public to collect their IDs. “We urge that people must approach the DHA to collect about 418,000 IDs that remain in the DHA offices,” said Mosa Chabane, the chairperson of the portfolio committee on home affairs. The committees also welcomed Home Affairs’ decision to open its offices during the voter registration weekend to enable people to collect their IDs. “The committees will monitor the roll out of the voter registration weekend and have committed to invite the IEC for a further update after the voter registration weekend.” Election’s date - Last Wednesday, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma announced a new date for the elections, which has been set for between 1 November. This is after the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) ordered the IEC to hold the municipal elections between 27 October and 1 November. Dlamini-Zuma had initially proclaimed 27 October as the date for the elections, but due to the ConCourt’s ruling, the IEC had to amend its election timetable. The applications for special votes will open 20 September and close on 4 October.

RAKE CONVERTED INTO A RACK As long as one doesn’t think of all the things this rake has been through before it found its way in this kitchen, it’s an awesome kitchen hack. Garden tools are not often seen converted into kitchen aids, but this is a clever way to hang wine glasses without splurging on an expensive rack.

If one has a broken rake or feels inspired enough to buy a new one for this project, then a cute-looking rack could be a conversation starter in the kitchen. We wouldn’t trust ourselves to store glasses on it, but we are sure many other kitchen utensils can hang on it.
