letter from the EDITOR

HELLO &

DAUN LESS Wow! What a month and what a time we are living in?! This magazine issue we are focusing on Faith and the story of doubting Thomas in the Bible. I know that many of us are having to tap into God and really stand firm in the faith that we have. My husband and I are just getting over being very sick. It was a testing time for our faith. We went weeks without work and pay but God was still there providing for us. We were not sure if we were going to have to go to the doctors but God pulled us through without having to. We were running low on water and food but God pulled through again for us. No matter what you may be facing right now or what you may be going through don’t lose heart or your faith in God. He is faithful even when and especially when it feels like the world is crumbling down around you. Stay strong and stay blessed! #bringingbeautifulback #dauntlessstrong

Arnette’s CORNER

I DARE YOU By: Arnette German

32

33

Indiana Jones, surprisingly, is one of the many that taught me what sound

Faith resembles. In the Last Crusade, in the powerful scene, known as the Leap of Faith, the saying is beautifully portrayed and brought to life. As Jones is in search to obtain the Holy Grail, the map he is utilizing, produces a “dead end” on the correct route. By human sight, one can see a bridge is needed in order to cross over to the other side. From afar, Jones is informed by his father, Professor Henry Jones, repeatedly, “You must believe.” Meaning, through spiritual eyes, from spiritual knowing, Faith, is the actual step needed to get across. Any morsel of Doubt present and/or his Faith not being authentic, Indiana will plunge to his death. When Jones makes the decision to take his “leap of faith” lifting his foot to step, to step out on Faith, one sees when he actually steps down his Faith that produced and uncovered the “in”visible bridge that was there-all the while. But, only to those who believed.

Doubt, the kryptonite to one’s Faith, reasons one must see it and “see it” in

order to take the obligated step. Doubting Thomas, one of twelve disciples, couldn’t allow his Faith to believe Christ had arisen as He stated He would. For Apostle Thomas, he had to physically see AND touch Jesus’s wounds in order to believe He in fact had been resurrected and not until doing so, Thomas then believed. Nowhere in that was Faith worked! Faith loudly, yet, subliminally states, “It is moving while knowing-IT IS SO BECAUSE I BELIEVE IT IS SO; THEREFORE, CAUSING IT TO BE SO!” Sadly, many do not realize that it is in that split second of questioning or mentally saying, “No! Why? I Can’t! Can’t Be. Uh-uh,” Doubt will cause them to (eventually) “descend” to their deaths because their Faith was either not: sturdy, authentic and/or existent to produce or uncover-anything!

34

35

36

Without Faith, it is impossible to please God. Just as Bees require

flowers in order for the pollination process to occur, Science relies on the existence of Gravity, Blue Cheese having need of mold to Be and Logic arguing Fallacies to find premises; Faith. Sure Faith has to be present and known throughout your walk with God. Nowhere can a smidgen of Doubt be found; to just see how much power a smidgen possesses, Jesus stated in Matthew 17: 20 (KJV), to his disciples, “because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you”. That’s how much weight a smidgen carries! You just determine what side of your belief system will the smidgen create, uncover and even move. Doubt? Or-Faith? William Shakespeare presented the infamous statement (which many have thought is a question but not) in Hamlet, “to be, or not to be, that is the question”. My actual question is, “to believe or not to believe”? Better, yet, “can you afford not to believe”?

In this season, I dare you to take your leap of faith to physically,

tangibly and spiritually see what your Faith can produce and uncover on your correct route and movement with and in God. As we read, a smidgen can do A LOT! Either your speck will save your life and get you across or it will cause you to plummet to your death-I.Dare.You.

Xiomara’s THOUGHTS

Faith

Just a little

By: Xiomara Eve Montalvo

38

There have been many times where have questioned various things in my life. The decisions I make, the paths I have taken, the lives I have crossed. With a mind riddled with questions asking, “Is this okay? Should I have done it this way? Could I have done more?” Doubt makes his presence known and tries to make the mind his new home. Always venturing aimlessly wondering Who, What, When, Where, and Why. Doubt has a great way of paralyzing the individual. Tying them down with Fear and questioning so that the promises that are meant for us cannot come to light. How can one find that light if we cannot move anywhere without second guessing ourselves. The light of Tomorrow. That sense of Hope and security. We try to chase after them but they feel so out of reach. Unattainable. When in reality our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, tells us that we are the light of this very world. (Matthew 5:14) There is nothing impossible for our Creator who created us. If Jesus identifies us as light, where there is light, Fear cannot reside. The very word from God’s lips spun the universe into existence. Therefore if God speaks into our character there is no room for Doubt. For God did not give us the spirit of Fear; but of power, and of love, and of sound mind. (2Timothy 1:7) Step out in Faith. Believe in the one who defends us and works through us. Move forward with certainty and leave the paralysis behind. All it takes is a just a little faith.

August Morning Apple Crisp Ingredients: 6 apples, peeled and chopped 2 Tbsp granulated sugar 1 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon, divided 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice 1 cup light brown sugar 3/4 cup old fashioned oats 3/4 cup all-purpose gluten free flour 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes pinch of kosher salt

40

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Butter an 8×8 baking dish, or spray with non-stick cooking spray. In a mixing bowl, add chopped apples, sugar, 3/4 tsp of the cinnamon and lemon juice. Stir to combine, then transfer to the baking dish. In a separate mixing bowl, add topping ingredients (brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, salt, and diced cold butter). Cut the butter into the oat mixture, using a slight downward twisting motion, until mixture resembled pea-sized crumbs. Alternatively, you can use two forks or even your hands to cut butter into the mixture. Spread topping over apples in baking dish, and gently pat to even it out. Bake 40-50 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly. Serve warm and enjoy!

Do You Need to See to Believe? By Tamara Haygood

A feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction; fear; be afraid. This is how the Webster Dictionary defines the word doubt. The Bible personality we are going to look at today, is usually known as “doubting Thomas”. When I think about him, I have to wonder; why? Why was he a doubter, what caused him to feel uncertain, or what caused him to be afraid.

Typically, a person isn’t born a doubter. This isn’t a personality trait; it is a response caused for some reason. Wow, what a way to be dubbed. Was he always like that or did he have that one defining moment that forever branded him? Something in Thomas’s life had brought him to a place where doubting defined him. We don’t see a lot about Thomas, but the passage we are going to focus on is based on the time after Jesus was beaten, crucified, died, and buried and had risen from the dead. However, the disciples were unaware or at least uncertain of His resurrection.

All the eleven disciples that were left knew of the horrific death of their leader. We know that John had been at the foot of the cross when Jesus was hanging there. They all knew that Jesus had died, there was no questioning that. Also we know that they were indeed fearful, and I dare say we would have been as well had we been a part of their group. They were terrified wondering if the Roman soldiers or the Pharisees would come searching for them next. After all they were those that were the closest followers of Jesus.

While they were hiding, they had a visitor that they were not expecting. The Bible tells us that when Jesus appeared to the others, they were behind locked doors. John 20:19 “On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ’Peace be with you!’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.” Thomas was not there at this appearance; we see in the following verses what his response was to the others who shared their experience.

“ Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.’” Thomas had lived and traveled with these men for 3 years. He has seen the miracles and

46

47

48

listened to Jesus the same as the others. The testimony of the visit from their beloved leader was not enough to cause Thomas to believe. Maybe he wanted to believe but he just couldn’t bring himself to accept that there was any possible way for Jesus to be alive, after all He had seen him in the beating and crucifixion. It defied all logic. If you are an analytical person, then you know that facts are important, and you are not usually swayed by emotions. Maybe this was Thomas, as much as he loved Jesus and wanted it to be true, he just could not bring himself to believe.

Once told of their experience, Thomas was very clear that he did not believe them. In fact, he made it clear the only way he would believe that it was truly Jesus. He needed to put his fingers in the holes where the nails pierced His hands and where the sword was thrust into His side.

I think he was saying this to point out that he clearly remembered what had happened. There is no way someone is alive and walking amongst us after that brutal death. “So, prove it to me! I have to see and touch to believe!” Doubt creates questions in our minds; and it can cause us to waver. Even about things that we know to be true. We will question and over think and sometimes talk ourselves out of it.

When we doubt, we are unsure, and it also makes us unable to walk as Jesus told us we must as believers. He said that our journey through this life is a walk of faith. Faith and doubt don’t work well together. It is like two people walking to a destination, as they walk together, they come to a fork in the road. One insists on going left and the other right. But only one road will get them to their destination. One way may look wide and the road smooth, even pleasant. The other may look narrow and not well trodden, even rocky and difficult. Matthew 7:13,14 describes it this way. “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Although there are times in life that we have reason to doubt people, because people are human, and they will at times lead us astray and are not always trustworthy. However, we must guard against not trusting God or confusing believers or well-meaning people with God. I went through a time of turning away from God because of what Christians were saying and actions they were doing towards me. So, for a time I took that wide road because I doubted God when it was not Him that caused the confusion and doubt in my mind - it was humans. It was probably one of the worst, probably the worst decisions in my entire life. Thankfully, God was merciful and gracious to me and guided me back to that narrow road. As believers of Jesus Christ, we must walk by faith and not waiver in our faith. People can misguide and deceive us, but God never fails, He is always faithful, and His Word is sure, you can always believe it. John 14:16 says, “Jesus saith unto him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.’” Isaiah 55:11

49

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” He tells us to trust in what He has promised and not to waiver. Will we always have a clear understanding of things? Why something has happened or a clear picture of what is to come – no. Hebrews 11:1 in the Amplified Bible says,”Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].” Notice the last line, it’s not something we can experience with our natural senses. This is where we must trust God.

I can say without a doubt in all my life God has not once let me down. Has it always been easy, no, far from it? But He has kept me through all kinds of very difficult, scary, heartbreaking, financially devastating, health uncertainties and I could go on. But I think you get the point. He is ALWAYS FAITHFUL. James 1:5,6

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” Jesus tells us that with faith that does not doubt, we can ask what we will, and it will be done. Understand, this is not requesting a Rolls Royce and getting it. As God’s children He knows what we need as His children. He’s not a sugar daddy or Santa. He is God. Matthew 21:21, “Jesus replied, ‘Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.’” We see that Thomas was not the only disciple that had shown doubt, Peter did too. Matthew 14:30,31 “But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. ‘You have so little faith,’ Jesus said. ‘Why did you doubt me?’”

The disciples had just experienced probably the hardest time they had in their entire lives. Of course, they were afraid and confused. Uncertainty of their future was on their minds. So, I think we can from that aspect understand why Thomas was doubting. We too as humans can go through difficult times and maybe our future seems uncertain. We don’t know how ends will be met when our employment ends. Or we watch helplessly as a loved

50

51

52

one dies or maybe we have been given a frightening diagnosis. We lose someone we love, and we don’t understand why. Right now, many are concerned due to the difficult times we are living in. There are so many different reasons that doubt, and fear can creep into our lives, but I assure you that just as Thomas needed to know and Jesus showed up for Him, He will be there for you too. Know that God sees the end from the beginning. He is never caught off guard. He is never concerned about how things will turn out, He already knows. And He only has good plans for you. But we must trust and obey Him. “A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ’Peace be with you!’ Then he said to Thomas, ’Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’ Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’

Then Jesus told him, ’Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’” I love how Jesus entered the room. He did not chastise Thomas saying, “What’s wrong with you!” He said, “Peace be with you!” You know when Jesus comes into the midst of any situation, He always brings peace into the matter. Trust in Him, no matter what you are going

through. Reach out to Him in faith, those nail scarred hands are reaching back to you. He will meet you right where you are and walk through it with you. He will not leave you and He will not forsake you. Be blessed my friends!

Live Free Fitness with Coach Jackie

57

About Coach Jackie I want to start this story back in college and even before. Growing up I was someone who never struggled with weight and played every sport under the sun. I went to college as a two-sport athlete and in the best shape of my life. College was truly my first time with my own freedom to do what I want, when I want, eat what I want, and drink as much as I wanted. This freedom came with its consequences. Just because I was a college athlete, did NOT mean I was healthy. Throughout my time in school, I gained about 30 lbs. I lost all of my confidence and developed a terrible relationship with food, my body, and myself. If you looked in the dictionary at the time, the definition of yo-yo dieting would say: Jackie Geisler. I would try to be perfect with nutrition Monday through Thursday and then throw everything out the window on the weekends with massive amounts of binge eating and binge drinking. I’d feel shame and anger towards myself and then try to go back to being perfect again on Monday. I had all kinds of trends that were back and forth and on and off constantly. Along with this cycle my body grew more and more unhealthy. I felt ashamed of my body in pretty much everything I wore. I hid my body behind XLs and baggy sweaters. Every time I had to get dressed up to go out I would verbally bash my body, legs, arms, stomach, and sides. I’d tear myself down feeling self-conscious and always falling short of high expectations. The winter after graduation I got my first big girl job in NYC (traditional hours, business casual, commuting, sitting at a desk, doing what I was told). My first salary was $12,000 for the year so I had to pick up some other jobs and one of them was network marketing for Beachbody. Long story short, deciding to do Beachbody was something that changed my life in so many more ways than I ever thought possible. It helped kickstart the consistency that was needed for my own health journey, It taught me that my place on this earth was in the health industry helping people, and it helped me to believe in myself. Ultimately Beachbody wasn’t the path for me for the rest of my career but it helped me dip my toes. I left that space, got my certifications in personal training through the National Academy of Sports Nutrition and in nutrition coaching through Precision Nutrition and trained at a big corporate gym. From there I knew I wanted MORE! I knew I wanted to impact people in a much bigger way than just meeting them for 1-3 hours a week and counting their reps for them. I found myself wanting to know more about their nutrition, sleep, stress, recovery, etc. I felt more like a “coach” then a “trainer” and I knew there was more for me to do. Live Free Fitness LLC was not only created to change bodies, but also to change minds and lives. I know how frustrating it can be to feel lost, all over the place, stuck, or like you aren’t going anywhere fast. I know the physiological pain that comes with losing some of the weight, gaining it back, losing it again, and then just rinsing and repeating. At Live Free Fitness, we focus on sustainable lifestyle oriented change that considers all aspects of health.

58

59

Work With Coach Jackie What is up!!! So, are you interested in hearing more about what it’s like to work with LFF or Coach Jackie?? Here is where you can learn more. It’s important to know that although we do have a 21 Day Challenge, we do not believe in short term quick fix bullsh*t. Real sustainable change takes TIME, and a decent amount of it. It takes time, support, accountability, mentorship, guidance, and intentional action taking. Live Free Fitness programs are designed around FOUR major pillars. DEEP HEALTH

Coach Jackie, what the heck does deep health mean?? GIRL, deep health means that our health IS SO MUCH MORE than just following a meal plan template and workout guide. Our health is multifaceted. In order to have that true lifestyle change that I hope you are looking for, the conversation needs to include routines, habits, sleep, stress, hormones, self care, environment, relationships, etc. The list goes on and on… This might seem daunting at first like. You might feel like you don’t know where to start.

That’s why we have it covered for you. We have three levels of programming to teach you everything from the basics all the way up to mastery level health and wellness. We have Freedom Foundation (where 99.5% of people will start), Freedom Acceleration, And Freedom Mastery. We like to think of it as handing you a fish, then teaching you how to fish, then you can fish on your own out in the big blue. Everything is taught to you, when it needs to be taught to you. We won’t confuse you with complex personal training terminology if you can’t even get 7-8 hours of sleep a night or eat a balanced meal. Live Free Fitness touches on all aspects of health, not just teaches you how to follow a meal plan. STRATEGY

Do you want to lose weight? Or do you want to lose weight, keep it off forever, and change as a person along the way? You tell me. If you just want to lose the weight and you’ll do whatever it takes to lose that weight but don’t want ANYTHING else to change other than the physical appearance of your body and your body composition then this is not the place for you. I’d rather save you the time it takes to fill out the application and tell you that upfront. When it comes to strategy we factor in two very important values: sustainability and lifestyle. Sustainability is one of our biggest pillars here at LFF. Whatever changes you are making, need to be changes you can still do in a year from now, two years from now, and for the rest of your life. Otherise, it’s just a waste of your time. We focus on making changes that you can keep. This means if you join today we do not expect you to be working out 6 times a week and eating perfectly by next week. If you have never worked in your life that’s crazy to think you can go from 0-100 and stick with it. We’d start you off with a couple walks a week or a couple workouts a week and build you up from there. The other value is lifestyle, meaning lifestyle oriented change. We are all humans with issues and problems but at the end of the day, we all have different things going on. What works for one woman is not what’s going to work for someone else. Each person’s lifestyle needs to be taken into account and needs to be part of the conversation.

60

MINDSET

This one is absolutely a 100% non-negotiable element of working with LFF. A change in mindset leads to sustainable change. It’s what makes it a change in lifestyle not just a weight loss program. So many programs out there in the health and fitness space do not touch on mindset, and it’s a damn shame. Our mindset is the foundation for all of our thoughts, routines, habits, and subconscious patterns. In order to stay consistent we need to shift our mindset to be in a more optimistic and deliberate place. Mindset coaching is included in most of our coaching conversations. ACCOUNTABILITY

Let’s be honest, accountability is why you are reading this far down this page and hovering over the apply to work with us button. Sometimes we just need support to get to where we want to go and that’s beautiful. Coach Jackie spends thousands of dollars a year on her own coaching and mentors. When it comes down to it, how many times have you said “I know what I need to do”. Trust me we get it. Coach Jackie was a 2 sport college athlete and someone who loved nutrition but still could not get herself to do the things she needed to do, consistently enough to see results without a coach and community support. Having the RIGHT amount of CUSTOMIZED accountability makes it so that you can hold yourself to a higher standard, have a higher baseline, get support when you need support, and also get a loving kick in the bum when you need it.
