Barlow Respiratory Hospital is the only not-for-profit respiratory hospital in California. Located next to Elysian Park and close to Dodger Stadium, we are proud of our legacy of service since 1902. Our focus has always been on care for patients with severe respiratory illness. We specialize in weaning patients from mechanical ventilation. Today we are faced with the challenge of providing care to extraordinarily sick patients in a facility that was built in 1927 and is outdated, cramped, and does not reflect the level of expert care our patients need and deserve. Thanks to the many donors who have provided initial support for our ReBuild Barlow Campaign, we have already raised over $4 million – half our overall fundraising goal. We have already started construction on a brand new, state-of-the-art hospital. This dramatic expansion will rebuild the hospital from the inside, with a major renovation of an adjacent building. This will add much-needed space for patient care, including more and larger patient rooms and an expanded ICU. Our goal is to raise the additional funds we need by our projected completion date of December 2022. We invite you to join a group of compassionate friends committed to helping us expand capacity and make a difference in the lives of our patients and in our community. Sincerely, 20% of patients below poverty line

I wanted to volunteer at a not-for-profit hospital. Not a huge corporation, but smaller, more personal…somewhere I could roll up my sleeves and help. I had no concept of a “Long Term Acute Care” hospital. At Barlow, I found it takes very special doctors, nurses, and therapists to provide such high level care for patients with extremely complex medical conditions hospitalized for weeks at a time. The compassionate care and the close bond that develops between the staff, patients and families produces incredible results. I was so very moved by everyone I met, especially Dr. Nelson. I knew I had to become a part of this extraordinary family. For fifteen years it has been my joy to support them.”

Why Barlow Matters

History

It could be you or someone you love. It could happen at any moment.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital was founded in 1902 by Dr. Walter Jarvis Barlow as the premier sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis.

Patients who have suffered traumatic injury or catastrophic illness are referred to Barlow Respiratory Hospital from nearly 100 hospital intensive care units in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and Southern California. These are the finest hospitals, where skilled physicians have done all they can. Our patients appreciate Barlow for our team approach – and the kindness – that only we provide. We are expert in caring for very, very sick patients including patients dependent on a ventilator to breathe, and patients whose medical needs require specialized care.

The Barlow of today is a multi-campus long-term acute care hospital providing the highest quality respiratory care for the Greater Los Angeles and Southern California area. Since 1988 we have treated nearly 22,000 patients including close to 7,000 patients in our ventilator weaning program. We serve nearly 1,000 patients annually with unsurpassed expertise and a national reputation for excellence.

LOVE, COMPASSION, KINDNESS

My husband was cared for at Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles with love and compassion. The doctors and nursing staff, respiratory care and support services were very attentive. Having a loved one in the hospital is a very difficult and stressful experience. We were blessed to be at Barlow. I will never forget their kindness. Donna Gibson Morrison
