I had the pleasure of spending a long weekend in Aspen just before the launch of this issue and let me tell you, the inspiration was endless. A summer vacation is always good for a life refresh and creativity reboot, isn’t it? Upon my return, it was time to get to work— both on the new Mini office (on left) and on everything you will find on the following pages. Come along as we travel to Los Angeles for our sunshine-filled cover shoot with mom of two and actress Busy Philipps, a peek at wellness guru Shiva Rose’s calming home and garden, a day with Sweet William founder Bronagh Staley in her mid-century oasis, and enjoy a backyard hangout with designer moms Emily Current and Meritt Elliott. We then jet set to New York City to spend the day with Orange is the New Black’s Alysia Reiner before ending on a sweet note with Style Me Pretty founder Abby Larson. The collection of perfectly printed baby and kids clothing is now available, hand-crafted by a talented group of artisans called Umutima.Umutima (which means “heart” in the Kinyarwanda language) is based in Nyamirambo, Rwanda and made up of 30 seamstresses—most of whom are moms—known for their beautiful craftsmanship, impeccable detailing, and eye for design. “I work everyday to feed my family and give them everything they need,” says 30-year-old mother of two Jeanne Hakizimana. “Some people say work is hard, but nothing feels hard when it’s for my kids.” And just as you thought the brand couldn’t get any better, Indego Africa also invests all of their profits from product sales, along with grants and donations, into education programs for their artisans. “I work because I want all of my children to go to school. With my first, there was the constant worry and anxiety that things would be okay. It was really hard to adjust to a new rhythm and rediscover myself in a new role. Now that I have my second, I’m more confident and have the routine down, but there are still challenges. The sleep deprivation is difficult and finding time to be mindless and irreverent is always a struggle!

I lost my husband to cancer when my oldest daughter, Lyric, was very young, so the challenges I faced as a first-time mom were unique. As a single mom who was also grieving, I relied heavily on the constant support of family and close friends to carry me through. Now I am re-married to the father of my second daughter (and baby boy in the oven!), and that comes with it’s own set of challenges! I’ve had to learn how to co-parent with another adult who is just as invested in my children as I am— which means lots of compromising and not getting to make all of the decisions on my own. On the flip side, what’s your favorite

As moms, we love that everything is new again and mundane things become firsts— first time to the park with the baby, first time to the beach with a toddler and so on! It’s an entirely new outlook on life and brings new perspective. Looking back to your first days as moms, what would you tell yourselves?

MINI |

Knowing what I know now as a mom, I wish I would have known that all the difficult moments pass quickly so take them in stride. I’d tell myself to take lots of short videos and snapshots of ordinary moments and snuggle as much as you can. MERITT |

I took all kinds of classes in preparation, but what I’ve really learned is that you have to just go with it and not have too many plans and expectations.

Let’s talk about the Pottery Barn Kids collab! What was your inspiration behind the pieces?

MINI |

We love creating little magical worlds, whether it be designing our clothing line, styling a fashion editorial, or decorating our own homes. With our first nursery collection for Pottery Barn Kids, we wanted to evoke an environment that felt sweet and playful for baby, while remaining stylish and relevant for parents. EMILY AND MERITT |

We designed two rooms, one in soft pinks and golds, and the other, a bold black and white. We mixed classic elements like scattered stars, circus stripes and graphic hearts with touches of shiny gold and lived-in denim and added whimsical details throughout: an arrow serves as the base of a floor lamp and a woven hamper boasts kitty ears. We are drawn to anything that feels nostalgic and like to balance vintage-inspired elements with newer, unexpected pieces. What do you think is essential when designing a nursery or kids space?

Let’s dive right into your work as a doula and birth coach. What sparked your interest in working with moms-tobe or where did it all begin?

MINI |

I felt called into the work of a doula through my own journey birthing my daughter Madeleine into the world. My experience of being pregnant and having a doula by my side while birthing inspired me to pass on the support and love to other women.

For our moms-to-be, can you define doula and your role? MINI |

The definition of a doula is “to serve a woman.” As a birth doula I provide emotional, physical and spiritual support to my clients during their pregnancy, birthing process and transition into motherhood.

PAULA MALLIS |

What do you think are the perks of working with a doula?

My go-to yoga pose for pregnant mamas is cat cow. Bring yourself to all fours. Inhale as you open your heart and stretch forward and exhale, round the back and hug your baby. This exercise is really great for releasing pressure on the lower back and encourage baby to be in the head down position. For meditation, sit in easy pose, legs crossed, bring one hand to your heart and one hand to your baby. Bring awareness on the inhale and the exhale of the breath. Start to visualize a golden bridge connecting from your heart to your baby’s heart. Continue to connect to the breath and your baby for five to ten minutes. You can take these practices with you into the labor and birthing process.

In addition, you offer toddler yoga classes! What do you think are the benefits of teaching yoga to the Mini generation?

MINI |

Having someone to support the prenatal process, to educate and prep you for the birthing experience. And to have a “neutral” energy of support in the room to hold the space for the journey into parenthood.

You also teach prenatal yoga and meditation classes! What yoga poses or meditation exercises would you say are essential for moms-to-be?

MINI |

My daughter has been exposed to yoga and meditation since she was in my belly. As she gets older, it’s amazing to parent her through what she has witnessed through my meditation and yoga practice. When she is having a challenging moment, I say, “Madeleine, just take some deep yoga breaths, inhale and exhale.” It’s amazing to watch her use this tool to calm her own nervous system. What a gift to give our children at the beginning, a tool they can use for the rest of their lives.

Your New and Full Moon womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s circles have become highly sought-after events! What do these circles include?

MINI |

The Moon Gatherings are a time to connect with other women and to align ourselves with the moon cycles. We gather on the New and Full Moons, sit in a circle, share, connect as a community and support each other in setting intentions for manifesting our heartfelt dreams.

Since you hold these circles at your home— Tell us about the place!

MINI |

My home is calm and serene. I am mindful of creating a sacred calming space for women to feel welcome as they arrive for a gathering. Our home in minimal and filled with light.

What are some of your favorite elements in your home? Where did they come from?

MINI |

A lot of the elements in my home are from local stores within the Venice community— General Store, Merchant Modern and Tortoise General Store. My husband contributes to a lot of the design and his vision as he built our home.

PAULA MALLIS |

Do you have a favorite room in your home? Tell us why you love it.

MINI |

I love the main living kitchen room. It’s where I do all my work and circles.

PAULA MALLIS |

When I am not working out of the home, it’s an open space for our family to be together, cook and play. You talk about how something shifted during your pregnancy with your daughter, Madeleine. Tell us about that awakening.

MINI |

I felt my journey was a shift in who I thought I was and how I wanted to show up in the world. After birthing Madeleine, the way I related to others and myself was totally different. I knew deep in my heart this transition into motherhood was an opportunity for spiritual growth and evolution.

PAULA MALLIS |

Were there certain things you tried to stick to and others you shied away from throughout the nine months?

MINI |

I stick with a lot of self care. Healthy eating, acupuncture, bodywork and therapy. I really used the nine months to prep for motherhood, the ultimate unknowing. I also slept a lot!

PAULA MALLIS |

and narrate for her and show her the way. We are constantly switching roles of teacher and student. What is your greatest joy of motherhood?

MINI |

Being present and allowing myself to be in the joy of it all! Madeleine and I love to laugh!

What do you think is the greatest struggle or challenge of motherhood?

MINI |

The biggest challenge for me is to allow myself to be human, to accept that I am not always going to be the perfect parent and I won’t always have the answers or know what to do. Asking for help.

What is your personal approach to wellness? Do you have a daily routine?

MINI |

I approach my lifestyle of wellness not as a luxury, but as a way of being. I believe organic and plant-based foods are medicine. I love body mind based pilates, practice and teach Kundalini yoga.

How are you passing this down to your daughter?

MINI |

I caught her the other day going through my teacher’s manual doing all the poses and teaching them to her dolly.

What is most important to you in raising your daughter?

MINI |

Being the example in all that I do. She is watching my every move. My intention is to not be the perfect mama, but a conscious mama. Take responsibility for my part

Do you have a favorite room in your home?

What are some of your favorite meals to make with what you’ve grown?

MINI |

Right now, it’s the incredible summer stone fruits. We have a peach and nectarine tree and when we have extra fruit, I like to pan fry the slices of peaches in butter and serve with cinnamon and yogurt. I love to make a savory fruit salad, dressing the fruit with sea salt and olive oil. I also make beans with fresh tomatoes, herbs and roasted cauliflower with a mustard olive oil dressing. Where do you spend the most time in your home?

MINI |

When I remodeled the house, I wanted one large living space where we could all be connected. The kitchen, dinning room and living room are all one space and so I spend most of my time there. I am usually cooking in the kitchen or using the dining table as my office desk. We also do art projects and hold family discussions around the handmade table. SHIVA ROSE |

Talk to us about your kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rooms. What inspired you in creating their spaces?

MINI |

My younger daughter Charlotte is a Waldorf child and loves objects made of wood. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any plastic items in her room. When we first moved in, she asked for lavender walls. She recently wanted a forest theme bedroom, SHIVA ROSE |

so we have incorporated some elements like a mushroom shaped ceramic lamp and bedding with forest creatures on them. My older daughter Colette wanted to keep to a minimal look and I was inspired by the old vintage windows in her room. What is your personal approach to wellness? Do you have a daily routine?

MINI |

For me, wellness is a way to feel vibrant and connected. The holistic world with diet and herbs has helped me heal myself from serious autoimmune conditions, so I am devoted to this path. I have a morning routine that consists of drinking Living Tea and then my Kundalini yoga practice. I do this before I wake up the children and feed the animals. It means I am up a bit earlier, but then my day flows beautifully. SHIVA ROSE |

How are you passing your approach to wellness down to your daughters?

MINI |

I try not to even nag or preach about these ways, however my girls realize that our house doesn’t have any toxic cleaning products and all of our beauty products are clean. I have seen my older daughter adopt many of my wellness ways and it really makes me happy to see that she also yearns for a cleaner planet. As far as food, they know and taste the difference between organic produce that we grow ourselves and processed foods. They now ask for the special kale salad and the healthy oatmeal cookies. They realize that they don’t get headaches or stomachaches after eating the desserts we make using coconut sugar or maple syrup. SHIVA ROSE |

MINI |

I wake up spraying the Radiant Rose Water across my face since it is a powerhouse of goodness with aloe, rose, jasmine, gotu kola, sea algae, sea minerals and more. I started my skincare line a few years ago when I realized that one out of three women will get cancer from the products they use. I had always made my own rose face oil, so I decided to launch the line with just that one product. I now have many more products, however I still blend the face and body oils myself. I really enjoy the process of alchemy and bringing non-toxic beauty to the world. I create the line with Kundalini mantras, blessing the environment and with deep intentions of bringing pure, high quality ingredients to the line. I have a honey

We’re thrilled to have you on our summer cover! Let’s dive right into your life as a mom. What does your morning routine look like?

MINI |

My husband and I divide and conquer in the morning. Our older daughter Birdie has to be to the bus stop by 7:20 and through trial and error, we found that she does best with her dad in the morning. I go and make my breakfast smoothie and my pour over coffee and then go get Cricket. She picks out her outfit for the day and I help her get dressed. I’m a big believer in letting kids have as much responsibility as you can give them in terms of helping around the house and getting themselves dressed. We make breakfast together— her favorite thing to make and eat is “cheesy eggs.” She generally gets to watch a show in the morning—probably Paw Patrol—while I pack her lunch and then she’s off to preschool by 9!

What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood?

MINI |

Oh man. I mean, I have days, you know? It’s so hard when your child doesn’t meet your expectations as to what they should behave or be like. Dealing with temper tantrums is really hard for me. Trying to be patient with myself and also my kids can be so challenging when you feel like “Clearly I suck at this, otherwise you would be perfect and be able to wait patiently for your food when they got the order wrong instead of telling me its

my fault.” But obviously, no one is perfect! I’m not perfect! I have my own grown-up versions of temper tantrums too. It’s not all Instagram worthy! I have a hard time not getting hurt when my kids have meltdowns. It’s something I work on in therapy. MINI |

What is your favorite part?

I do love those crazy chickens! What I really love is talking to them. They have such funny ideas about things, as all kids do, and I really try to listen. I should have a notebook with me to write it all down. Birdie will literally talk to anyone, too. At a kids birthday party, I’ll find her deep in conversation with a mom. She loves talking to grown-ups. Cricket is more of a zany, free spirit. She’s one of those kids who is almost always smiling and she loves to put on a show. She cracks me up. I have read to both of my girls since birth and every night, I get to read to them individually. It’s our special time together. Cricket usually picks out a few books to read— right now, she wants a Spanish book of words every night, so I’m learning them too! Birdie is such a strong reader that we now take turns reading chapters to each other which is so wild. We are currently on the last book in the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary. If you haven’t read those, I highly recommend it. I sometimes get so wrapped up in the story that I cry while reading it to her. I don’t know how she did it, but Beverly Clearly so perfectly captured what it’s like to be a little girl trying to do her best growing up.

What surprised you most about motherhood?

MINI |

I remember being so overwhelmed by how much I loved Birdie. I figured it would be like any other kind of love that I had experienced in my life, but it isn’t. It’s not something you can be prepared for. It’s all encompassing and so massive that you feel like you might break at times. But in a good way, I guess? People who aren’t parents can’t understand. I didn’t understand. I called my mom sobbing when Birdie was a few months old and said, “I’m so sorry. All this time, I had no idea how much you loved me...”

How has motherhood changed you?

Part of my brain is always taken up by how to protect them, keep them alive, be a good mom. Seriously, I was in a SoulCycle class and all I could think was, “Is the upper lock to the gate to the pool locked?” That’s just your brain when you’re a mom. I will be on set working and I will all of a sudden think “Oh! I

have to text Marc or our nanny— Cricket has to have ballet shoes this afternoon!” It’s stuff like that constantly running through my brain. What did I even used to think about? What is most important to you in raising your daughters?

MINI |

I hope they become people who care deeply about things. That might sound vague, but I think it’s so important. I don’t want them to be apathetic about their lives or unwilling to speak out for things they believe in. I want them to care deeply about people and the world we live in and what they choose to do for a living and their own families. I really try to show them how important it is to care and to make sure people know that you do.

What worries you most?

My husband and our daughter’s nanny, Iliana. Nothing would be possible without Iliana and her family and their support. I mean that.

How has your career or work schedule shifted since having kids?

MINI |

sexually assaulted in her life. I know the statistics and I will try to help by starting conversations early about sex and protecting themselves, but it scares me to no end. I really hope that meaningful steps will be taken on campuses and I hope consent becomes a part of sex ed in schools. Tell us how you decided on your daughters’ names.

This is crazy, but my husband really picked both names. He’s the writer, he’s used to finding good names! We had a huge list with Birdie, but ultimately when she came out, I just knew Birdie Leigh was the right name for her. She was huge! 9 pounds 7 ounces 22 inches long! My big Bird! Cricket was tougher to name. Birdie and Marc really were gunning for the name Cricket my whole pregnancy. I didn’t love it, if I’m being honest, but then she was born and all the other names I thought I liked didn’t fit her. She came home from the hospital without a name! But she had these long legs that were folded together in those early days and Birdie and Marc were so sure her name was Cricket, so I

It hasn’t really. But, you know, I’m not willing to do a TV show outside of LA. Vice Principals was different since it was only 18 episodes total and I knew I would be done. The majority of it was shot over summer anyway, so we had a blast all living in Charleston last summer!

It’s a California mid-century modern house built in 1959. It feels a little bit like a treehouse or a ship floating in the air, because it’s perched on the side of a hill. We try to soften the modern interior with soft colors and patterns.

We didn’t have to go too far out of our way because we are naturally informal people. There are some dollhouses and kitchens around for the children to play with, but we always buy wooden and natural pieces that go with our aesthetic.

few walls in our home, so we are all over the place all the time, but feel like we are in the same room on different levels.

What do you miss about living in New York?

My husband misses winter, I miss the energy and being in such close proximity to so many people. Our son misses the constant action on the streets.

Talk to us about your kids’ rooms. What inspired you in creating their spaces?

MINI |

Our son loves skateboarding so his room mostly consists of skateboarding themed items that he has collected himself. Our daughter’s room has many textiles we collected traveling over the years, as well as many dolls and stuffed animals that have found their way into our life.

You’ve made the move with your family from New York to California. What are you and your children loving about living on the West Coast?

On a career note, tell us about the beginnings of Sweet William. How did it all start?

MINI |

After working for many years in the fashion industry, I felt like I needed a change when I had my son. I have always been very driven so being my own boss made sense.

How have you seen Sweet William grow over the years?

MINI |

We went from one store to three stores in two different cities [and] our website has grown to have a cult following worldwide.

We love seeing the sky and trees plus the amount of time we can spend outside is refreshing. My husband and I are both avid runners and we live close to Griffith Park which is a luxury if you run.

You stuck to eco-friendly design in your home. Why was that important to you?

What are some of your favorite pieces in your home? Where did they come from?

MINI |

I love our bar from Environment Furniture. It’s made of recycled Peroba wood. I love the couch— we just recovered it with a gorgeous eco fabric and I love the vibrant color. I love the new recycled “mushroom wood” wall. It was barn wood, then folks grew mushrooms on it, and now it’s just a beautiful part of our design. But my favorite pieces in the house are the pieces of art as they each have a story and are very dear to my heart. I got two of them while doing a play reading at the Hartford Stage Company in Connecticut. ALYSIA REINER |

course. We just renovated Liv’s room, too. We had an amazing designer named Gus Deardoff. Gus is a theatrical set designer, so he made incredibly creative choices. He included her love of science, adventure and volcanoes, secret passages and windows, and he turned a closet into a reading nook because Liv is such an avid reader. It is truly a magical room. Where do you spend the most time in your home?

MINI |

I wish I could say my bedroom because I still love it so much, it’s so hotel and spa-like, but really... I never sleep! So I guess I would say our first floor, because it’s a loft space living, dining, kitchen area. We love our family time there, be it cooking together, making homemade kombucha, family dinner, hosting play readings or entertaining. It’s a great open space and this time of year, it’s indoor/outdoor too. ALYSIA REINER |

You play a tough character on Orange is the New Black, but let’s talk about wearing the Mom hat. How would you describe your parenting style?

MINI |

Warm eco-minimalism again? But seriously, I believe in loving boundaries. I believe in giving kids as much responsibility as possible and giving choices. I believe in a lot of love and time and play and snuggles and reading and fun, but I also believe in real consequences. And most of all, I believe in being true to your word— if you say it, do it. We bought this house two years ago and I truly can’t believe that I get to call it my home. It belonged to a family friend and I told them years ago that if they ever wanted to sell it to please let us know before they put it on the market and I would move heaven and earth to buy it. Lucky for us, that is exactly what happened and we snatched it up before it ever hit the market. The house is 12 years old and was built to celebrate the incredible sunset that we see every evening and capture the beautiful view of the meadow for the other side of the home.

Let’s talk creating a kid-friendly environment without sacrificing style. How did you do it?

MINI |

Well, as any mother knows, this is a bit of a dance. We haven’t yet splurged on our forever pieces, but we also know that there is no point in throwing away money on poorly made foundations so we have settled in the middle with most of our decor. We basically design around the notion that nothing in life is perfect and that the occasional stain or scratch is just proof of a life well-lived.

I have an incredible portrait that was painted by Rebecca Simon. She

makes me smile every time I walk through the door. And the chest that sits right underneath her is another piece I love. Both of these were finds from the interior designers that worked on our last home, McGrath2. But if I had to choose, it would be an abstract portrait that my grandfather painted of his children at a ballet lesson. He was an artist and I have his portraits sprinkled about the house, all of which I feel really lucky to have. Where do you spend most of your time in your home?

MINI |

On that big, cushy, totally oversized and way too big for the room but I don’t care sofa. I work from the sofa, binge watch Bravo for the sofa, cuddle the kids and husband on that sofa. It’s a good spot.

ABBY LARSON |

On a career note, tell us about Style Me Pretty’s beginnings.

MINI |

Style Me Pretty was born in 2007 after I sold my wedding invitation line. Having spent time in the wedding industry, I knew that there were tens of thousands of absolutely beautiful weddings happening that were sitting on the cutting room floors of many wedding publications. I made it my goal to find those publish-worthy weddings that deserved a place in the sun. The idea of brides waiting three months for inspiration made me crazy, so I hoped to create a space where they could check in all day and find something that they loved.

What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

As the kids are getting older and their needs are getting more complicated, it’s getting harder to toggle my brain between work and mom. When I built this company, I wanted to build a brand around my home and my life. Now that SMP is a thriving business, it’s become harder to blend the two sides of my life seamlessly. It’s a dance—messy and imperfect—but a dance nonetheless.

I have accepted the fact that I can’t be everything to everyone. I have to offload and outsource the tasks that aren’t as meaningful and I have to admit to myself that some days are going to be great and others are going to be filled with frustration. That’s okay though.

Let’s talk motherhood. How have you changed since becoming a mom?

MINI |

Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. You are truly challenged every day of your life. Sometimes it’s as simple as convincing your child to eat a carrot, others its wiping a tear when there is a scraped knee or a hurt heart. There are days where I forget to shower or kiss my husband or take a breath. And there are days when I’m not sure how I’m going to make it to 7 o’ clock without pouring a

glass of something good. Every single day is a challenge and yet every single day is laced with moments so good, you can’t believe that your heart can contain it. Looking back to your first days as a mom, what advice would you give yourself?

MINI |

For every moment of we’re never going to get through this, you will. And then life will gift you with a new challenge, a new “oh, crap.” And believe it or not, that too will pass. And change. So don’t take yourself or life’s many bumps too seriously because before you know it, the bump will smooth out and your little family that could will get right back on track.

I’ve had a lot! When my husband quit his amazing job to work full-time with Style Me Pretty— that was a big one. When I did my first television appearance. When we sold majority share to AOL. When I found the courage to stop using the word “we” even though it was just me in a meeting or on a phone call. Big or small, there have been so many “I’ve made it” moments that I count and keep in a little bank for when I need a pick-me-up.
