SISTER ACT INTERVIEW BY KRISTEN TRACY AND KAITLYN KIRBY STORY BY MARC WENDT PHOTOS COURTESY OF BELLY BANDIT

With all the excitement, changes, and ups and downs that come with pregnancy, few new parents have the time or energy to focus on the figure that remains after giving birth. It’s not surprising that celeb moms like Christina

38

M I N I s u m m e r ‘14

Applegate and our recent cover mom Kourtney Kardashian have turned to a revolutionary product to slim down post-partum. It’s called the Belly Bandit and it’s changing the way women shape their bodies after pregnancy.

How It All Started In between two pregnancies herself, one of Belly Bandit’s co-founders, Lori Caden, struggled with the not-so-fab situation that is a post-partum belly. “My sisters were sick of hearing me complain about my post-baby belly,” Caden told Mini. Very quickly, the sisters realized that there had to be a better way. After years of researching post-partum compression practices and consulting with OB/GYNs—not to mention their fair share of prototypes and lots of trial and error—Caden and her sisters Jodi and Kari had developed their first product. “By the time my second child was born,” Caden said, “we had created our first band and knew we had a product that would revo-

lutionize the industry.” How Does Belly Bandit Work? The Belly Bandit is designed to compress a woman’s body post-pregnancy, giving special attention to the tummy, waist and hips. “Our bands apply constant medical-grade pressure which can help with body shaping, muscle memory and can also cause the uterus to shrink faster— all resulting in a flatter belly,” Caden explained. Belly Bandit is designed to maximize on the natural hormones present in a woman’s body just after giving birth, so it’s recommended to begin wearing the band as soon as possible. Keep wearing the Belly Bandit for six to eight weeks.

A true entrepreneur, Caden knows her product inside and out and she stands behind her collection: “I’ve tried every product in every stage of production! Our offices often look like a large dressing room as we are constantly testing and trying on products.” Beyond the Original Belly Bandit Caden admits a particular fondness for the original Belly Bandit because she was the first to use it and because it was the product responsible for launching the entire Belly Bandit collection. But the company provides so much more— the Upsie Belly offers a lift to a woman’s growing belly during pregnancy and the Mother Tucker compression leggings flatten the tummy, keep the thighs apart and take the jiggle out of your step. Ultimately, Caden credits the fact that her products are designed by women for women. “We’re a style-conscious, fashion-obsessed group and our products reflect that—mommy-to-be chic is what we’re all about!” For more information about Lori, Jodi and Kari Caden and to place your order, visit www.bellybandit.com.

B ODY BY BABY Let’s take a look at five celebrity moms who did not focus on fast weight loss, but instead, embraced the postpartum period and their post-baby bodies. BY CELEBRITYBABYSCOOP.COM

The urgency to lose baby weight in Hollywood is almost as serious as an Oscar win. Who dropped the postpartum pounds the fastest? Who debuted her post-baby body on a magazine cover? How much did she gain during her pregnancy? Celebrity moms face these and many more questions when it comes to their bodies after baby. So when we hear highprofile moms like Kate Winslet and Mariska Hargitay embracing their postpartum figures, we celebrate with them.

64

M I N I s u m m e r ‘14

Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet is mom to three kids: daughter Mia, 13, and sons Joe, 10, and Bear, 4 months. While recently promoting her film Divergent, the actress said she’s in no rush to lose the baby weight. “To be honest with you, after having a baby you end up being so busy with the baby and the nursing,” she said. “And I have two other children as well obviously, so there’s so much going on that the difficulty I find is remembering that you have to eat. Because when you’re nursing you really have to eat, otherwise you don’t produce anything that’s going to feed your child. So nursing’s a great excuse to eat heaps. That’s what I’ve been doing.” “I have to say, so much attention is placed on this thing of bouncing back after a baby,” she continued. “I don’t advocate fast weight loss at all after a baby, because you are nursing, you can’t, you have to eat and you have to be well. Having just had a baby, I’m not going to be thinking about my arse.” Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon had great perspective after welcoming her third child, son Tennessee, in September 2012. At just 3-months postpartum—when the media asked how she’s “bouncing back” to her pre-baby body—the Oscar-winner kept it real. “I don’t know if I’m bouncing back. I’m slowly crawling back,” said the actress, who’s also mom to daughter Ava, 14, and son Deacon, 10.

Actress Drew Barrymore didn’t stress over losing the baby weight after welcoming her baby girl Olive in September 2012. “I don’t worry about it,” she shared of her postbaby body. “I probably wasn’t totally in shape before I got pregnant, but I do think I’m back to where I was. I take care of myself. But I’m never going to be the person who talks about diet and exercise — I would fail that conversation!” Prior to her second pregnancy, the Blended star praised the postpartum period as “sacred,” and not a time to be focused on rapid weight loss. “I’m still working on it, but I’m not worrying about it,” she said. Jessica Simpson’s weight gain during her first pregnancy was one of the most talked-about topics of 2012. “I really have to separate myself from the world’s expectations and really just be healthy with myself,” Jessica shared. “I’m not a supermodel. My body is not bouncing back like a supermodel. I’m just your everyday woman.” Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay is mom to three children: August, nearly 8, Amaya, 3, and Andrew, 2. The actress says she not only embraces, but loves her body after baby. “I love my curves because they scream, I’m a mama!” Celebrity Baby Scoop is one of the most popular blogs on the topic and the foremost provider of everything celebritybaby, featuring baby fashion, baby names, baby trends and up-to-the-minute celebrity baby gossip and pics. THE GLOW

A glimpse into the world of stylish and inspiring moms, The Glow has extended their empire of shining visuals through the release of a new book. INTERVIEW BY MARC WENDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLY STUART COURTESY OF THE GLOW

Tell us how your website The Glow got started. What did each of you do before founding The Glow?

MINI |

We met while working together at ELLE.com. There was an instant connection, both personally and professionally. So we decided to create something special and intimate together that would allow us to still collaborate creatively, even though we were no longer working together (Violet left to work for InStyle). VIOLET GAYNOR |

In essence, The Glow is all about providing a glimpse into the lives of inspiring and fashionable moms. What would you say is the best advice you’ve taken away from such women?

MINI |

That there is not a one size fits all approach to balancing motherhood, career, marriage, friendship. The secret is figuring out what works for you and your family. We’ve also learned that it’s not about doing it all perfectly, but doing what you can VIOLET GAYNOR |

and making it count. What makes the women featured on The Glow stand out?

MINI |

The women we feature are inspiring not just because they have beautiful homes or impeccably curated wardrobes. They are interesting and inspiring because they are following their passion and living out their dreams as entrepreneurs. Their intense drive, coupled with their unique and challenging roles as mothers, is what makes them compelling subjects. VIOLET GAYNOR |

How has your perception of motherhood changed since you’ve started The Glow?

MINI |

The words of wisdom that the featured moms have shared with us over the years have new meaning for me now that I’m a mom. I remember on one particularly difficult, sleepless night in the first few VIOLET GAYNOR |

months of my daughter’s life, I remembered that Rachelle Hruska had said how the first six months with a baby are like life support. Her honest words were so comforting to me.

With all of the amazing advice and tips found through The Glow and looking back to your first days as a parent, what would you tell yourself?

MINI |

I’m constantly reminding myself of the wise words of Ana Lerario Geller, who we featured on the site early on. She said to try not to always think ahead (like, I can’t wait until my baby can sit up, I can’t wait till she can crawl, I can’t wait until she talks). It’s so easy to think this way because there are so many challenging phases, and it’s exciting to look ahead to what’s next, but you’ll miss out on the beautiful phase your baby’s experiencing in the present moment. VIOLET GAYNOR |

What would you say is the key to creating or capturing these stunning moments with children that The Glow has come to be known for?

MINI |

The key to capturing these moments is about allowing our subjects to be in their natural state, comfortable and in the moment. Allowing them to just be who they are in the comfort of their homes allows their love to shine. Our shoots are extremely organic, like having coffee with friends. We gradually move around their space and capture them doing their favorite things.

KELLY STUART |

Your first book, The Glow: an Inspiring Guide to Stylish Motherhood, embodies everything you strive for on your website and neatly packages it for coffee tables everywhere. Tell us about the book.

MINI |

The book was an amazing opportunity for us to take our concept and blow it out in a big way. Kelly and I started the site before having kids and we come from a place of understanding and relating to our readers in a very special and intimate way. We wanted to create a book that would speak to all of their interests: decor, beauty, fashion, cooking, relationships. VIOLET GAYNOR |

We have some exciting collaborations in the works and plans to bring our readers more of what they love (more features, more inspiration, more guides). Shopping and e-commerce are a big focus for us going forward. As for a second book, we’re already brainstorming ideas! —theglow.com VIOLET GAYNOR |

S ECR E TS OF A FIT MOM INTERVIEW BY MARC WENDT PHOTO COURTESY OF TRACY ANDERSON

70

M I N I s u m m e r ‘14

MOM

Her week begins on Monday just like anyone else. This week she wakes up in Sag Harbor, where she has a home, to find her fifteen-year-old son, Sam, is already up and at ‘em. She moves on to her two-year-old daughter, Penelope, and dresses her for the day. Once everyone is out the door, she’s headed to her Watermill exercise studio where she teaches a class for two hours. Then it’s in and out of the shower, time for a quick lunch, and a couple of hours behind her desk tending to everyday business and answering emails. Before she knows it, she’s on a Los Angelesbound plane to shoot her newest fitness DVD. That’s the way life works when you’re Tracy Anderson, creator of the Tracy Anderson Method and fitness expert to celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Christy Turlington. Life’s a whirlwind, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. With a new DVD in the works, a clothing line, and a newly introduced men’s fitness program, Anderson shows no signs of slowing down. Mini caught up with her on a busy Friday afternoon to talk fitness, motherhood and more.

SPIRATION

important. It’s not being selfish, it’s not being irresponsible, I think it’s the opposite of that. You can only serve others and if you’re truly taking care of yourself first. It’s a mindset, it’s not a trick—you figure it out and get it done. Can you tell us how moms-to-be can maintain their healthy exercise regimen while they’re pregnant all the way through giving birth?

MINI |

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I designed a program and filmed a unique routine to be done each month of pregnancy, because pregnancy changes daily, really, hourly sometimes! I also interviewed people like Gwyneth Paltrow, Christy Turlington and Susan Downey—all mothers—so that every [mom] at home can understand how truly unique each pregnancy is. TRACY ANDERSON |

What works best to lose the weight once moms give birth?

MINI |

Women really need to take it one step at a time, they need to lean into post-pregnancy routines; they need to show up for themselves. Breastfeeding really helps the body get back into proper positioning, also making sure that you are treating your body with the right level of nutrition which consists of organic foods, whole foods and not processed foods. TRACY ANDERSON |

What’s your best advice for busy moms just like you who are looking to stay fit?

MINI |

It’s how you organize your priorities. I think that for a working mom to slow herself down and understand the importance of connecting to her body and taking care of herself is something that is really TRACY ANDERSON |

LEFT Tracy heralds tacos as her fave kid-friendly summer recipe— “I love getting organic corn tortillas because that’s something that can be gluten free. And then you’ve got so many great things that can go into it.”

Let’s move onto a few questions regarding your role as a mother. So every mom has a few tricks up her sleeve. What’s your best-kept secret as a mom?

MINI |

We move really fast throughout life right now and I think that making sure that you stop and check in with your kids is the key to making sure that the relationships don’t get away from you. Even if you’re physically around each other all the time, if you’re moving too fast or you’re not really connecting, a lot of stuff can come between you and your kids. And making sure that direct line is always there every single day is important. TRACY ANDERSON |

DINNER LAST NIGHT Dinner last night was “cooked salmon sushi rolls.”

Recently you’ve done some work focusing on men’s health and exercise. Can you give us the lowdown on how dads and husbands can stay fit and healthy?

MINI |

MOM UNIFORM My mom uniform is “Aviator Nation sweats, a Good Humans t-shirt and Kings of Cole sweatshirt.”

G U I LT Y P L E A S U R E Tracy’s guilty pleasures? “Chocolate and a glass of wine.”

It’s really important both parents are aligned with taking care of their bodies and I think that total family health is vital. A lot of dads are the ones that are working tirelessly and up until now, what’s available to them is pushing a lot of testosterone with heavy weights, which makes you imbalanced. My men’s program focuses on the whole concept of creating balance where there’s imbalance in the body. TRACY ANDERSON |

MINI |

next?

What’s the big thing you’re looking forward to

Providing more access to the method and continuing to support the goal that I serve as an expert from an aspirational and informational standpoint. I’m doing a lot of research and launching a body blueprint line where people can understand their inner chemistry as well as their muscular and physical chemistry. We’re opening more studios and there’s more DVDs to come! TRACY ANDERSON |

ROCK ON, MOM Anine Bing is the founder and creative designer of her namesake fashion line, as well as a singer/songwriter in the band Kill Your Darlings. Oh, and did we mention she’s a mom of two? INTERVIEW BY MARC WENDT PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ANINE BING

Let’s get started with some of your design work. What do you find inspiration when it comes to designing clothes? Do you have a style motto?

MINI |

I find inspiration everywhere, At the flea markets in LA, looking at girls on the street and from traveling. My motto is less is more! Really, try to keep it simple.

ANINE BING |

What pieces/ensembles will you be wearing this summer? What are your musthave style staples for the season?

MINI |

I love wearing dresses during the summer. My favorite is a loose fit dress from my own line. I match it with sandals or a pair of boots. For a chilly summer night, I love wearing a black leather jacket— also from

ANINE BING |

my own line. A great pair of boots is a must in all closets. You can wear them all year around. On to beauty, you’ve said you try to limit washing your hair to once a week—I’m sure our readers will be thrilled to hear this time-saving tip! What other beauty secrets can you share with us, especially when you’re short on time?

MINI |

Dry shampoo is a must when you’re a busy woman. I don’t want to wash my hair too often and the dry shampoo is doing wonders— my favorite is from Blow Pro. Also, keep it simple when it comes to your make-up. Use a CC cream with a nice glow, a little blush and mascara. That’s all you need for a fresh look!

ANINE BING |

Moving on to a few questions about your children, what types of clothing are Bianca and Benjamin living in right now?

MINI |

Bianca only wants to wear dresses. I have honestly nothing to say when it comes to her clothes. That girl knows what she loves and doesn’t like. One of her favorite dresses is from H&M. She picked it out and it cost 7 dollars! Benjamin is easy to dress. He wears loose-fitted leggings and a simple t-shirt. His favorite right now is a faded black tee with KISS print. Very rock ‘n’ roll.

ANINE BING |

What is your favorite summertime family activity?

MINI |

Swimming in the pool! We have a beautiful garden and pool, so we love just to stay home and swim and play.

ANINE BING |

You’re a designer, a singer, a songwriter, a blogger, a 24/7 fashionista, a businesswoman, a wife, a mother—how do you keep all of the plates spinning?

MINI |

It is not always easy but I think the key is to love what you do. And I love every single part of my life. I love spending time with my kids and husband, but I also love working, so it makes me happy to be busy. The kids always come first [and] I am always in some kind of work mode. My job is more of a lifestyle for me and I am so lucky to be able to do all the things I love.

MUM’S THE WOR D Mom to chic littles Georgina and Truman, Chicago native Juliet Angus is making a name for herself in both fashion and on Bravo’s latest series, Ladies of London. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOS COURTESY OF NBCU AND JULIETANGUS.COM

Your children are adorable and we love that they have little British accents! What do you think are the benefits of raising kids in London?

MINI |

They are so exposed to different cultures as their classes have children with parents from Sweden, Greece, France, Italy, Hong Kong, Russia and India. Their friends are [also] all learning a second language from a very young age. They are learning about the world, different religions and celebrating holidays in school from all over the world. Also, travel! We recently took the kids to Paris on the Eurostar. Truman loved the train ride and Georgina could just stare at the Eiffel Tower all day— eating the best croissants and french fries was a bonus! JULIET ANGUS |

78

M I N I s u m m e r ‘14

We’re certain your children’s wardrobes are just as fabulous as yours! What pieces in your kids closets stand out to you most?

MINI |

I love dressing my little real-life dolls! J.Crew and Marie Chantal are my two main brands for the kids, but I love mixing high and low brands together. I don’t believe the kids need to be in head to toe designer, but some nice classic pieces I feel are key. JULIET ANGUS |

Truman has amazing cashmere sweaters from Marie Chantal— he lives in them as that is what most of the year in London calls for. He wears them with skinny J.Crew cords or girls’ skinny Gap jeans (we wont tell him that though). And both kids have Moncler coats for the winter, which is a great investment because they get worn— a lot! Georgina has these amazing summer sandals by Pom D’Api that I love and she loves wearing too. Hooray, because we do have some fights over wardrobe! Where are some of your favorite places to shop in London?

MINI |

The Harrods kids floor is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It’s worth the visit when you’re in London. Every high-end designer has mini designs for children—baby Lanvin, Chloe, Dior, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni—all together in one section. It’s just bonkers. JULIET ANGUS |

• ON MY MIND • DINNER LAST NIGHT was in Stockholm with my husband , he works here right now and I’ve never been before!

BEFORE KIDS, I NEVER thought I would be raising them in London, with British accents.

MY PARENTING STYLE firm and disciplined, but most importantly, always full of utter, endless love and tons of hugs and kisses.

FUNNIEST THING MY KIDS SAID When will we get to meet William and Kate?

FAVORITE KIDS BRANDS J.Crew, Marie Chantal, Caramel Baby & Child, Bonpoint, Gap, Igloo, Trotters, No Added Sugar, Petite Bateau, I Love Gorgeous

MINI |

How have you embraced the British culture? What traditions, customs or mannerisms have you adopted since moving there?

‘better’ way to do it, then I realized maybe the way they do things isn’t so bad. It’s nice to keep traditions and history alive, tea time anyone?

JULIET ANGUS |

I’ve now completely adopted saying ‘loo’ instead of bathroom, ‘bin’ instead of garbage and adding a ‘u’ in words like favourite and colour. I’ve learned to drive on the other side of the road, it’s very hard to still get use to— let’s just say parking lots can be a bit tricky.

MINI |

What has changed most for you since moving to London a few years ago?

Don’t hide the bump! My first pregnancy, I wore baggy clothes and felt I wasn’t suppose flaunt my growing body— big mistake! The second pregnancy, I always made sure to wear a form-fitting top and show that adorable growing belly.

MINI |

England is so traditional. Even in London, one of the biggest cities in the world, you often feel small old school traditions in full effect. At first, getting used to the way they do things in England was frustrating. I wanted to teach everyone the JULIET ANGUS |

As a stylist, give us your advice for dressing the bump. Do you have tips for our mom-to-be readers?

JULIET ANGUS |

If you could give your kids one piece of style advice, what would it be?

MINI |

For girls, it’s be fearless with fashion, have fun and more is more! For boys, it’s less is more and comfort. JULIET ANGUS |

MINI CHAT

JENNY MOLLEN

We couldn’t wait to chat with the funny gal (and new mom to Baby Sid!) about her first book. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOS COURTESY OF JENNY MOLLEN

We are so excited to chat with you for our summer issue! You’ve been busy lately— writing a book and you’ve recently welcomed your first child, Sid! What are you loving most about motherhood so far? JENNY MOLLEN | I am loving how nothing else matters but Sid. I used to believe I needed to achieve all these things to be MINI |

82

M I N I s u m m e r ‘14

happy. Now I just want to sit and chew on my baby— the rest is icing. I am surprised by all the additional hair I’ve grown. I have more hair than I know what to do with. On a good day, I look like a Pantene ad [and] on a bad day, Cousin “It”. MINI |

How did you prepare for your first

baby? Were you reading parenting books, carefully designing his nursery? Most of my preparation consisted of ignoring the fact that I was having a baby. I didn’t read any parenting books because I think they’re all boring and annoying— and Sid’s nursery still isn’t completely done. To be honest, I don’t really think you can prepare for motherhood. Until it happens to you, you really can’t understand how it feels. (I realize I sound like that mom I used to always roll my eyes at, but it’s true!) As far as diet [goes], I ate sushi my entire pregnancy. My doctor said that if I was going to good places, I was fine. JENNY MOLLEN |

How have you seen Jason change since becoming a dad? Have you seen major changes in the two of you since becoming parents?

MINI |

Jason has become a little more neurotic, but a lot more patient. He double and triple checks the car seat before we go places but he is also the guy up in the middle of the night rocking Sid back to sleep with a bottle. JENNY MOLLEN |

How did you two decide on a baby name? What went into your decision?

MINI |

JENNY MOLLEN |

When he came out, he didn’t

look anything like we expected. He had a full head of dark hair and looked a lot like little Caesar from Little Caesar’s Pizza. The last day at the hospital, the name finally came to us. We felt it was a little rock ‘n’ roll and a little old Jewish mobster. Your Twitter account is a Mini favorite and we love the stories you tell about your dogs, especially Mr. Teets. Has Mr. Teets readily welcomed little Sid?

MINI |

I always say that having a dog and then having a baby is like dating someone you are head over heels for while still living with your ex. Teets is 13, so I’m hoping these are the dementia years he won’t remember. JENNY MOLLEN |

Let’s chat about your book, I Like You Just the Way I Am. What inspired you to write it and what can we find inside?

MINI |

I just wanted to write a book that gives women permission to acknowledge they’re crazy. Because as women, we are *&%$-ing nuts and I for one think it’s a good thing! Crazy is just a word boring people use to describe fun people. In the book, I stalk Jason’s exes, I throw horrendous bachelorette parties, I punch friends in the face to disguise Botox bruises and I even hire hookers. It’s a fun romp for the whole family. JENNY MOLLEN |

Just whisk together garlic, olive oil, soy sauce, lemon juice, honey, salt and pepper and marinate your salmon in that for 20 minutes before baking at 400 degrees to your desired doneness, roughly 10 mins per inch of thickness. I’ll throw a couple of sweet potatoes in to roast in the oven and turn the rice cooker on right when I get home from work if we want a grain to go alongside (you can add coconut oil or a little butter and some soy sauce to the water to flavor the grain, plus fresh scallion on top when it’s done). Then we toss together a leafy green salad with a quick dijon, vinaigrette— perfect!”

RIGHT Daphne welcomed her first child, daughter Philomena Bijou in late February.

“I actually was the most confident I’ve ever been in my body while I was pregnant. I felt so powerful and free to flaunt the curves that we’re growing a little baby, so I wore a ton of body con and low boots. I figured out early on that wearing loose clothing often just makes you look bigger, so I tried to wear stuff that fit but that wasn’t tight or uncomfortable. Kimonos were a thing of mine for a while, as we’re pretty baby doll dresses, and of course great leggings and tops.”

“Now that Philo is here, I feel like I’m always eating on the run, trying to catch bites while she’s down for a nap or squirming in my lap. It’s a lot of onehanded foods or quick meals. But I am totally taking advantage of the beautiful summer weather for long walks [with my family]. And now that she’s a bit older and is sort of (fingers crossed!) getting a schedule going, I’m really looking forward to getting back into real workouts. Even if I just have 20 minutes, I’ll pull up a workout on my computer— I’ve done everything from the Insanity routines to Ballet Beautiful sets. I also have found yoga to be really helpful for dealing with back pain and muscle tension— I’m a big fan of Steve Ross.”

“Plenty of candles, fresh flowers or even fresh herbs in pots go a long way. A meal that’s warm and welcoming without being fussy. My husband and I love barbecuing. We set up a big tin bucket of ice with tons of beers for people to help themselves, a couple house wines on the table and then dinner is a huge, fresh salad, one side (I like Mexican style corn or cornbread) and a couple different meat options. I’ve been doing a killer cumin-chili-brown sugar-garlic-rubbed skirt steak on the grill that is so easy. Another Michael Symon trick is to pull the steak off the grill, let it rest 10 minutes and then cut it on a wooden board seasoned with some olive oil, salt and chopped fresh herbs: it makes sure every piece is well-seasoned and makes you look like a damn good cook.”

“I loved decorating [Philomena’s] nursery! I tried to make it blend with the rest of our home while keeping it baby-friendly. I’m a big fan of Hollywood regency style, brass, polished wood, animal prints, lived-in luxury, soft things. What really set the tone for her nursery was the antelope-print rug I fell in love with, so I dressed the rest of the room around that. Lots of soft, plush toys, white furniture with gold handles, a cream glider for me, creamy pinks and corals for her bedding and aqua walls. [It was also important] to me was that she have a great bookshelf. I read to her every night before bed. I know she doesn’t know what I’m saying, but she’s totally mesmerized by the pages!”

“My dad was full of so much good advice. But I think the best kernel of wisdom came from his experience as a parent even more than a doctor. He reminded my husband, John, and I to take time to support each other and reconnect. Happy children are a product of happy parents.

• ON MY MIND • BREAKFAST THIS MORNING papaya with lime, a scrambled egg and a fresh-baked perfect croissant. The good, the bad and the buttery.

MY CURRENT HANDBAG my mom bought me a Prada diaper bag that is a dream.

THE ULTIMATE GETAWAY dinner alone with Daddy! I wouldn’t turn down a deep tissue Korean massage either.

FAVORITE KIDS PIECES I fell in love with this little white dress with balloons on it from Boden. I am a fiend for Baby Gap and cute stuff I find on Etsy. She is wearing the best little whisper-light cotton jumpsuit from Rickshaw as I type this. The outfits she has from Bonpoint, Liberty of London, and Luli and Me that are too darling for words for her fancier days.

BABY’S FIRST Our friend Monika Hibbs of The Doctor’s Closet threw this adorable NYC themed party for her son Liam’s first birthday!

MINI STORY HAND DRAWN Can you believe Monika replicated this cityscape from an Anna Rifle Bond NY print? It was the perfect backdrop for the party!

“The dessert table really brought the whole bistro theme all together,” Monika told Mini. “I picked up some black and white bistro chairs, baskets, candy jars, baked goods and mixed them in with the cake and sweets. I was absolutely thrilled with how it all came together. Oh, can’t forget the black and white striped balloons— they might have been my favorite decor item.”

“Right when you walked into our house, we set up a photo booth area with a painted NYC scape that I replicated from a Anna Rifle Bond NY print. My husband cut a yellow taxi, we grabbed some props and created a fun place where our guests could goof off a little and capture a fun memory of Liam turning one!”

“I wanted to keep the cake pretty simple. I saw a Pinterest photo with an Statue of Liberty holding up one candle. I didn’t need more convincing, it was too adorably perfect! For the NY menu, we simply stuck with pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches with a side of mini tomato soup, mini mac and cheese and pastry-wrapped mini hotdogs.”

Talk to us about your blog, The Ivory Lane. Where did the inspiration come from and what can we expect to find there?

MINI |

I started Ivory Lane as a family blog when I first got married in 2009 to journal my newlywed life. It slowly turned into a fashion/lifestyle blog and business in 2012 after I had [my daughter] Capri. I had just graduated from college and needed an outlet for myself. I hope to give a little bit of inspiration to women on fashion, beauty and family.

EMILY JACKSON |

EMILY’S IT LIST The Ivory Lane blogger shares what’s on her mind this summer

How do you manage the chaos— running a popular blog, traveling, and chasing a little one?

MINI |

M Y R I T UA L

It really is a full time job! But I make it work because I love it. Capri’s nap time is my best friend when I need to blog or answer emails.

EMILY JACKSON |

MINI |

Emily’s morning ritual must include a workout, she tells Mini.

How are you preparing for your new little one this fall?

I grew up with four sisters and then I had Capri, so I don’t really know what to expect! My husband is already searching for the baby’s first basketball and financial calculator, but I am trying to be a little more practical. The first item on my list is the crib (white and blue).

EMILY JACKSON |

MINI |

What does Capri think about having a baby brother?

PRINCESS DOLLS You can always find Rapunzel and Ariel dolls in Emily’s handbag.

She already loves her baby brother! She always wants to talk to him and watch him kick. However, she isn’t thrilled when I tell her that I can’t carry her up the stairs because I am already carrying her baby brother.

EMILY JACKSON |

How do you manage to stay chic on Mommy Time? What are your simple steps to great style?

MINI |

When I am at home you can usually find me in Lululemon. I like to stay comfy so I can get down and play with Capri. I also have found that chunky sweater and comfy jeans are key. When going out I, of course, love to throw on the heels and glam it up a bit.

You’ve had some major changes happen just over the past year. You’ve moved back to California and are now expecting Baby #4! How have things changed for you as a family since you’ve moved back to California?? JESSICA SHYBA | It seems as though everything has changed! We’re much closer as MINI |

a family unit, that’s the best part. Despite living in a home nearly twice the size of our Manhattan apartment, there’s so much more to do as a family here. We BBQ and do outdoor adventures all the time. It’s truly wonderful. MINI | What served as your inspiration for creating your blog, Momma’s Gone City?

How has your blog evolved since it first began? I began Momma’s Gone City as a way to keep our family involved and updated about our new and drastically different lives in NYC. It was a casual online journal of sorts and one that I’m incredibly grateful for because otherwise I wouldn’t have documented such a huge life change. MGC now is far and away more than I ever expected it to be, and I’m so grateful for that. It is now not only a creative outlet for me in several ways, but it’s also a business and contributes to our family income. JESSICA SHYBA |

Where do you find the time to manage the blog and keep up with your growing family? How do you stay on track?

ever been filled quite the same if we hadn’t adopted Theo from the shelter after he was abandoned by his mother. They are playmates and they quarrel, but they also are very connected. Can you give us a sneak peak into your forthcoming book, Naptime with Theo & Beau, which comes out next February? What can we expect besides heart-melting photos of Theo and Beau?

MINI |

It’s a children’s board book, so there are very few words— just as I wanted it. The photos are never-before-seen though and there’s a poster included! This sweet little ritual of theirs really requires very little story line in terms of language. JESSICA SHYBA |

Tell us about your fundraising efforts for the Santa Cruz SPCA. Why is this cause so important to you?

MINI |

I’ve hired some help, finally. I have a sitter that comes a few times a week to play with Theo and Beau while I work. I’m much less stressed juggling everything, although balance will always be elusive for working parents, won’t it? JESSICA SHYBA |

You’ve said that Jack and Zoe, your two oldest children, have their own kind of relationships with Theo and we find that utterly adorable! What do you see that makes the friendship between Theo and Beau so special?

MINI |

Theo and Beau truly regard each other as brothers. They filled a void in each other’s lives that likely wouldn’t have JESSICA SHYBA |

Our experience adopting Theo from the SPCA was wonderful, however it was quite heartbreaking to see the condition that their facility is in. It was absolutely a given that we’d use this unexpected, worldwide attention to fund raise for them, and it’s been one of my favorite parts of this journey. Channeling this attention for their benefit as well has been incredibly grounding for me. I’m hoping through the sales of the book (I’m donating a percentage from each sale to the Santa Cruz SPCA), that they’ll meet their fundraising goals and be able to build a new facility. JESSICA SHYBA |

You have a lot going on in your life with all your acting roles, how has that changed since Phoenix was born? TAMMIN SURSOK | It may sound like a cliché, but it’s all true. It’s about balance. My daughter means everything to me, but I also love my work. And it has taken very specific attention to strike that balance. I am also quite fortunate in that I have a set up which allows me to bring Phoenix to work on certain days. There is nothing more rewarding than doing a scene with this talented cast and then immediately seeing my daughter’s smiling face. MINI | How do you balance your time between all of your other commitments? TAMMIN SURSOK | Take everything one day at a time, breathe deeply. It’s all about teamwork in our household. MINI | What is something no one could have prepared you for when it comes to parenting? TAMMIN SURSOK | Everyone said you would be tired— oh my goodness. down, and I love it and wouldn’t change it.

KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

In addition to being a busy mom, you also have fab shoe and jewelry collections, as well as host The Fabulist on E! How do you manage to balance it all?

Since you’ve become a parent, where have you seen life change the most?

Luckily, I make my own hours with the shoes and jewelry, so I can work on them when the kids are sleeping. The Fabulist is only one day a week in NYC, so I just pop in and out. I’m very lucky to have a husband that helps out tremendously with the kids when I’m gone.

The big difference between one and two is that you really have no time to yourself. During Camden’s nap time, which is usually when I can catch up on things, the little guy is just waking up to eat and play. MINI |

Definitely my social life! It’s not often that I go to dinner with girlfriends anymore, but when I do, it makes it that much more fun. We have a routine and schedule KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

How did you prepare for new baby Jaxon at home? What went into designing his nursery?

MINI |

KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

Since it was our second boy,

MOM 101 Kristin Cavallari gives us tips on chic summer shoes and more

we had everything already. Jaxon took over the nursery and Camden got a new room with his toddler bed. We really didn’t do anything to the nursery. It was more about Camden, and making him excited for his “big boy room.” We loved your maternity style! What were your wardrobe staples during pregnancy?

MINI |

Thanks! I lived in my Lululemon leggings, I would just roll the top down. I loved wearing blazers with a maternity tank top because it meant I didn’t have to buy too many clothes. I really just bought maternity basics and wore sweaters and jackets without closing them. My go-to outfit was leggings, a black tank top, blazer and booties or boots. KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

G I G I S A N DA L S “My favorite shoes for summer are my Gigi sandals— they go with everything and are great for running around with kids.”

You look amazing! What was your fitness routine while pregnant? What do you follow now if any?

MINI |

I worked out four times a week up until the last month. I did some workout DVDs like The Brazilian Butt Lift, which obviously focuses on your legs and butt. I’m a very healthy eater, which plays a huge role. I eat organic and I don’t put any toxic chemicals in my body. KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

B R E A K FA S T Kristin rarely drinks coffee, so breakfast was a smoothie.

Let’s talk Mini style. What are you dressing the boys in right now?

MINI |

I really only shop at Baby Gap and Carter’s. Camden lives in t-shirts with either sweat pants or jeans and a pair of Nikes. Jaxon has all handme-downs from Cam, which at this age is mostly onesies. Camden just recently got a trucker hat which he loves to wear backwards— just like daddy! Since they are boys, it’s really about no fuss when it comes to clothes. The only designer pieces we have have been gifts. Camden is always outside playing and getting dirty anyway, so this way I don’t care if his clothes get a little beat up. KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

DIA PE R BAG Kristin carries a Mia Bossi diaper bag. “It’s the only one I’ve ever used.”

M I N I s u m m e r ‘14

Talk to us about your shoe collection. Which are your favorite shoes for summer?

MINI |

My shoe collection is truly a dream come true. I’m incredibly lucky to be able to call that work. My favorite shoes for summer are my Gigi sandal because they go with everything and are great for running around with kids. I also love the Lucky mule— mules are a hot shoe right now and can be thrown on to make the outfit pop. KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

You recently launched a new app for iPhone. What inspired you to create the new app and what can fans find here?

MINI |

The app is really personal to me because I focus on everything I love which is fashion, beauty and health. It’s a way for people to see what I’m really passionate about and get a glimpse into my life. I hope people can take away some great information regarding health and are inspired to be the healthiest [and] best version of themselves. KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

Do you think your boys will be into football? Has the process already started?

MINI |

Camden definitely loves balls, but not just footballs, any kind of ball. We’ll see. I hope they don’t want to play, since it’s such an aggressive sport, but I don’t think I could really stop them. KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

If you could give one piece of advice to your new parent self, what would it be?

MINI |

Enjoy every little moment, even when he’s crying and won’t sleep. It’s over before you know it. KRISTIN CAVALLARI |

RIGHT Minkoff and husband Gavin have a 2-year-old son Luca and will welcome a baby girl in August.

It’s been a while since we last chatted! You’re now expecting Baby No. 2! How are you preparing to be a mom of two?

so excited to welcome a little girl into our family and are helping prepare Luca for the arrival of his new sister. We’re sure little Luca will be a great big brother! How are you getting him ready for the new baby?

MINI |

He’s so excited to be a big brother! We talk about the baby all the time around him and how life will be with a new baby sister. Luca has named his little sister Gouda (we are not considering the name at all, but he feels happy about it) and he says he loves her daily. We also got a great piece of advice that we should get him a doll to begin to take care of. We did, and he’s been very helpful ‘feeding’ her.

baby’s nursery? What can we find there? Calming colors like periwinkle and ivory. I’m trying to resist the urge to buy too much, only the necessities until she arrives. It’s so much more fun to shop for the baby once it’s here.

REBECCA MINKOFF |

What will little Luca be wearing this summer? Any favorite pieces or ensembles you’re excited to try on him?

MINI |

How are you dressing the bump? What are your favorite pieces to wear right now?

MINI |

I’ve been mixing it up a lot. I love pairing a tight body con dress that shows off the bump with something unexpected like my Wes Moto leather jacket. I’ve also been wearing a lot of flowy, bohemian dresses like the Dev dress.

I love Bonpoint and am sure I will be even more tempted to buy with a little girl! Luca will be sporting lots of shorts with striped t-shirts this summer!

REBECCA MINKOFF |

REBECCA MINKOFF |

We love the RM baby bags! What might be find inside your own baby bag?

REBECCA MINKOFF |

MINI |

What’s going into the design of the new

Which RM pieces do you think every chic mom should have in her wardrobe?

MINI |

Every chic mom-to-be should have a flowy dress that she can transform from day to night! My pick for this summer’s go-to dress is the Dev dress. It’s so versatile and the bold pineapple print is perfect for summer! REBECCA MINKOFF |

We’re all beach bound this season! What do you have in your beach bag?

MINI |

A towel, a bottle of water, healthy snacks for Luca and my favorite Eve Lom sunscreen— Daily Protection.

STONE FOX MOM The founder of “groovy, enchanted wedding sanctuary” Stone Fox Bride, Molly Guy applies the same free spirited mentality to parenting her daughter, Sunny. INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLY STUART, COURTESY OF THE GLOW

We love the free spiritedness of Stone Fox Bride. Where did the idea for the brand come from?

MINI |

While I was planning my own wedding, I couldn’t find a store, website or magazine that spoke to my aesthetic. The whole industry felt really manicured and full of patina and hairspray. The seed got planted during my dress search. I was really hungry for a cool, mellow showroom that had an authentic, smart, bohemian edge.

MOLLY GUY |

Every piece, from the gowns to the flowers, is just beautiful. Where do you find inspiration for the brand?

er, which, as a single lady, was a pretty indulgent career. But free time as a parent is a super rare luxury. I’ve learned when I’m at work to really work. There are very few conversations, calls, emails or projects that aren’t all about SFB. Mornings and nights are really about caring for my daughter. Basically, there are two parts to my life: work and being a mom. Makes things pretty simple if you think about it. MINI |

style?

How would you describe your parenting

MINI |

The whole vibe of SFB is really innate. Since I was old enough to dress myself, I’ve always been drawn to a super natural, sort of wild, grungy, high-fashion vibe.

We’d have to ask my daughter, but she’s only two. I think she would probably say that I’m pretty silly.

MOLLY GUY |

MOLLY GUY |

Now that it’s summer, what will you and your daughter be wearing to beat the heat?

MINI |

I just bought her a bunch of old, cotton print flower dresses from my friend Sarah Sophie Flicker’s yard sale. She’ll be wearing them all summer, along with her red Starfish sandals. I’ll be in sandals, India dresses, flats, vintage slips, jean shorts and old tees.

MOLLY GUY |

How has your career shifted to accommodate motherhood?

MINI |

I was a freelance writer for a long time, before I was a mom and business own-

MOLLY GUY |

MOM 101 The Stone Fox Bride Creative Director dishes on parenting

MINI |

What surprised you most about motherhood?

I always hated babies. I found them so boring until I had my own. Now I am obsessed with them.

MOLLY GUY |

What advice would you give to new moms? What advice have you followed as you find your own stride as a mom, if any?

MINI |

Stay away from really militant moms who have a black and white approach to parenting— they can be pretty scary. Keep the books and Google searches to a minimum. Trust your instincts. You are the only person in your child’s life right now that can truly advocate on their behalf. It’s a serious job, but it’s what we were built to do. Drown out the noise.

MOLLY GUY | PROUD MOMENT “My proudest moment was giving birth in a broom closet without drugs. Haven’t had a night that insane since I took six tabs of acid at a Phish show in Seattle in 1995.”

MINI |

What were your style staples during pregnancy?

I was not one of those women that loved being pregnant. I wore a lot of big t-shirts and maternity jeans. Obviously, I wore some vintage India dresses with tights and flats, but I wear the same dresses today. In fact, now that I think about it, a lot of the clothes I wear today I was able to wear during my pregnancy, if that gives you any indication of my style. My husband’s sweaters, ponchos, capes, oversized India peasant blouses and Converse.

MOLLY GUY |

SUMMER PLANS “This summer I cannot wait to go to the beach!” Guy shares with Mini.

As the founder of SFB, what advice would you give to your own daughter about weddings?

MINI |

Don’t lose sight of the fact that it’s a celebration designed to honor that you’ve found your true love. The rest of it—the dress, the shoes, the in-law histrionics— ultimately don’t matter. How many people in the world can say they are settling down with their soul mate?

E S T E E S TA N L E Y Stylist and designer to the stars Estee Stanley has a unique aesthetic that radiates through her work. Mini is excited to take a behind the scenes look at how the mom of two pulls a room together. INTERVIEW BY MARC WENDT PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ESTEE STANLEY

Let’s start out with some fashion. What’s hot for kids this summer? What are you dressing your own kids Teddy and Flora in?

MINI |

For girls, floral, neon, checkers and Liberty prints. There is a surge of pattern-matched sets and combining bright colors with prints. For boys, neutrals are also

popular as opposed to a lot of strong primary color choices of the past. Flora is wearing a lot of bold pink, because it’s her favorite color and glitter.

ESTEE STANLEY |

122

M I N I s u m m e r ‘14

What about for mom? What looks are you styling for women this summer?

MINI |

This season I’m looking at more casual, loose-fitting pieces. For moms, it’s really all about comfort, but that doesn’t mean foregoing style. High waisted pants are a great option as well. ESTEE STANLEY |

always on the look out, even if I don’t need a specific piece— it keeps me in the know. I also reach out to stores to find out when they are getting new containers. Tell us about your approach to designing a children’s space. What steps do you complete and what special considerations do you make for kids’ spaces?

MINI |

We’ve heard your style described as chic, electric, and effortless. What’s your best advice for on-the-go moms to build their own chic, electric, and effortless wardrobes?

MINI |

I try to select timeless pieces so as they get older, the furniture and accents in their rooms don’t become outdated or too immature for their liking. Classic, gender neutral pieces are always a great way to go. So instead of the standard pink or blue, try golds or silvers. ESTEE STANLEY |

Think interchangeable. Jackets in neutral colors, versatile pieces that are simple and easy to change into, things that fit but aren’t too tight, those you can mix and match. ESTEE STANLEY |

We adore Ladys and Gents, your children’s fashion blog. Talk to us about the concept and your inspiration.

MINI |

I had always been interested in fashion and once I had kids, that love of wanting to find nice pieces just carried over into children’s fashion. I figured there had to be parents like me who didn’t want the same clothes for their children. They wanted to see new, original and unique pieces. Ladys and Gents has been a great way to expose readers to brands they may not otherwise know about and inspire parents who love styling their little ones. ESTEE STANLEY |

What’s your secret to scooping up the best vintage finds before anyone else? How do you get to them first?

MINI |

I’m always on the internet, always looking, always going to swap meets. I’m ESTEE STANLEY |

We hear you have a knack for rolling up your sleeves to make your rooms absolutely perfect, like the star-printed ceiling you did for your daughter’s room. What are some easy ways parents can “do it themselves” when designing kids’ spaces?

Add personal touches by incorporating artwork or painted pieces. You can paint the walls, hang handmade mobiles— think geometric shapes or cute animals. You can also make any room great by framing cute pictures of your kids friends and family. Like my ceiling stars, try this on the walls or add a wall decal. Another idea is picking up one of those paper mache animal heads and decorating it— try painting part or adding glitter to the antlers. Most of these ideas your kids can help with, making their room that much more special. ESTEE STANLEY |

and I’m here to rescue you with some healthy summer swaps. These delicious renditions are favorites in the Bauer house, and I’m betting some (if not all!) will be well-received in your house too!

Try my Jicama Fries. Slice into strips, add a squeeze of lime juice, and season with salt and pepper. Or for families who like a fiery twist, add a dash of chili powder.

INSTEAD OF THE SUGARY PB&J

Start with whole grain bread, top with almond or peanut butter and add your own sliced fresh strawberries, grapes or whole blueberries. Cut into triangles for a satisfying and naturally sweet treat. INSTEAD OF ICE

Your kids will flip for this indulgent bananachocolate chip “ice cream” treat. Pop super-ripened frozen bananas into a food processor and puree until they’re creamy and dreamy, then top with dark chocolate chips. For a peanut butter twist, add a dollop of nut butter to the bananas as they puree.

CREAM

with puffed quinoa and flavanol-rich cacao) from my new line of snacks, Nourish Snacks. They’re loaded with nutrients like protein, fiber and antioxidants all for 200 calories or less. And, P.S. They’re delivered weekly right to your door. INSTEAD OF FROYO WITH

Pour on a bag of Coconuts for You. Yes, you can get your kids to eat fiber— and omega-3 rich chia seeds! SPRINKLES

INSTEAD OF FRIED MOZ-

Try dipping plain cheese sticks in warmed marinara sauce for a yummy snack sans the grease and refined white breading.

ZARELLA STICKS

INSTEAD OF VEGGIES WITH LOADS OF RANCH

Change it up by cutting up celery sticks and spreading with light cream cheese. Gain smiles with your little ones by topping with raisins for classic ants-on-a-log. Make your own air-popped version, gently mist with oil spray and sprinkle with parmesan cheese. Or for a sweet treat, add ground cinnamon and a dash of sugar. INSTEAD OF PACKAGED POPCORN
