INSIDE LOOK: (On Right) A peek at our holiday cover shoot with Arielle Charnas. (From Top) This shot of Charnas’ shoe closet will make any fashion lover’s heart skip a beat. (Below) One of my favorite shirts this year— especially given all of the inspiring women in this holiday issue!

16

This is my most favorite issue of the entire year! Not only is it the holiday season, but it’s the anniversary of Mini! I started this not-so-Mini-anymore magazine in 2011 after an idea I threw onto Twitter seemed to stick. I hopped on a plane to LA to shoot our very first cover, without a clue as to what I was doing, and the rest is history! I can’t believe I’ve just put together our eighth holiday issue— it just gets better every year! It also helps when you work with incredibly inspiring women, like the powerhouse moms featured on the following

pages. We have Arielle Charnas of Something Navy who is in the midst of building her fashion empire, Lauren Gores Ireland who’s taking the beauty world by storm with Summer Fridays, and Dorianne Passman of Thea Home whose interior design work I have obsessed over forever— plus many more! Thank you for supporting Mini this year. We couldn’t do this without you! Wishing you a happy holiday and wonderful new year!

Inspired by her passion for elegant ambiance and intimate moments, new mom (to son, Lyon) Elizabeth Minett founded Cander Paris— a luxury candle line made in France in partnership with world-renowned French perfumer Emamnuel Philip. Having recently relocated with her family from California to Miami, Minett shares with Mini the importance of creating a home, no matter where you are.

We’re thrilled to have you in Mini! Let’s jump right into it. Tell us about Cander Paris and how the brand came to be.

MINI |

Cander Paris was started out of my passion for exquisite fragrance, and creating that cozy ambiance at home. It is a luxury scented candles brand, made in France. Our perfumer is based in Paris, and it’s a dream and honor to create beautiful and timeless fragrances for people and their living spaces.

01. It was the first fragrance created for the brand, and it’s a gorgeous warming scent for the home with notes of of pine, firewood, and citrus.

ELIZABETH MINETT |

What candles do you have burning at home, especially during the cozier months?

MINI |

ELIZABETH MINETT |

I love Cander Paris Scent

Tell us how you manage to run your brand—created in Paris— from Miami.

MINI |

We recently moved to Miami from Malibu, so I’ve always lived away from the action, so to speak. My partner is from LA so we’ve always been stateside. It takes organization and making the most of my time when I’m in France. We used to spend four to five months of the year in France, but when I had Lyon, I couldn’t travel much for about a year. Every working mom will know that it takes ELIZABETH MINETT |

FA S T FA C T S BEFORE KIDS, I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD Have patience. IF THERE WERE MORE HOURS IN THE DAY, I WOULD Go to the spa every day. FAVORITE KIDS BOOK Lyon loves this book How Loud is a Lion by Clare Beaton. IDEAL DATE NIGHT A boat ride at sunset. CAN’T STOP LISTENING TO Peter and the Wolf because it’s Lyon’s fave. FAVORITE LOCAL SHOP Mrs. Mandolin. ALWAYS IN MY FRIDGE Organic blueberries. TYPICAL COFFEE ORDER I drink tea. FAVORITE LOCAL RESTAURANT Planta. And I’m not even vegan!

balance, organization, and planning to manage these things. I’m much less spontaneous than I used to be— alas! Since you recently moved from California, what are you missing most from the West Coast?

MINI |

You know I’m not a person who looks back much; I value new energy and forward motion. In that sense, I don’t miss it, but I would have to say I miss the view from our home in Malibu, and that sushi restaurant in Little Tokyo. ELIZABETH MINETT |

MINI |

ami?

But what are you loving about Mi-

People keep a nice balance of family and personal/leisure in the sense that you can be at a hip restaurant for dinner, and people will be there with their little kids. I love that. It’s very European. You don’t see that so much in LA. I ELIZABETH MINETT |

also love what Craig Robins has done with Miami Design District. And the parks— lovely, clean parks for children. MINI |

How would you describe your home?

My homes have always been very minimal, perhaps because I’ve always traveled a lot and haven’t put enough time into filling [them]. Our home is always tranquil. I used to have friends that would say they wanted to take a nap when they got to my house, but they might have just been bored AF. I think it’s important that a space evolves over time, and is a reflection of your life story, not the latest interior design blog. I love vintage pieces because they are so full of character that is hard to achieve now with big box store recreations. I have started slowly but surely collecting art; that’s a lifelong pursuit but it brings such a story and individuality to the home. ELIZABETH MINETT |

Since you’ve moved across the country, what helps you to make a new house feel like home?

MINI |

Fragrance for sure helps, because scent is the strongest memory and if you can keep that wherever you go, then you will always be ELIZABETH MINETT |

at home. Let’s talk motherhood! What has surprised you most about motherhood thus far?

MINI |

I’m surprised by the constant surprises! Everything is new, a discovery, and a learning curve. It has refreshed my life and creativity in ways I can’t describe. It’s like constantly being on the frontier of the unknown that lies ahead. That’s a great place to be in life because it’s where the magic and wonder exists. ELIZABETH MINETT |

What is your greatest parenting worry or fear?

MINI |

I admit to having major mom guilt at times! I’m sure every day I have a thought about whether I’m doing something right or good enough for my son, but the great thing is that they don’t know any better yet! Jokes aside, I think being present and conscious is what stops the worry and fear, because those things can’t co-exist. If I’m completely present and in the moment with my son, I can’t worry about the future or past. ELIZABETH MINETT |

What is most important to you in raising your son?

MINI |

My intention is to raise a son who is kind, emotionally intelligent, and can be a confident and secure man in this new female future, where women have ELIZABETH MINETT |

power like never before. It’s important that he loves strong, intelligent women and doesn’t feel threatened, but instead lifts them up as partners in crime. It’s important that he’s funny too; I’ll be really disappointed if he isn’t funny. What have you found to be hardest aspect of motherhood thus far?

MINI |

Realizing that most people won’t understand what I’m going through or juggling (work, motherhood), even the people closest to me. But there’s probably a mom out there who’s reading this and feels the same way, so in that case, we’re understood. ELIZABETH MINETT |

Where have you seen the biggest changes in your life since becoming a mom?

MINI |

My life has changed in the best way. I used to love nothing more than spraying a crowd of people with champagne, while dancing on a table to thudding house music. Now, waking up at 7 a.m. to my son’s smiling face, is the best feeling in the world and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I’ll probably have a relapse.

ELIZABETH MINETT |

Tell us how you decided on your son’s name.

MINI |

You know, some people think it’s a bit hippie, Lyon (pronounced like the animal), but actually it’s an old British name, commonly used as a last name (Lyons). When I was pregnant, I was looking at pictures to hang in his room, and I came across a picture of a lion, and it struck me that he has this energy like a lion. You know those intuitive pregnant woman feels... so that was it. His legal name is actually after his Papa, Edward, but we call him by his middle name. ELIZABETH MINETT |

Thank you for inviting us into your home! Tell us about the place.

MINI |

While our home isn’t exactly our style yet, we are big fans of mid-century modern. We love our artwork and our children’s room. That feels the most like us, especially the children’s room as we put those spaces together for them. We spend a lot of time there and put a lot of love into making those spaces unique for playtime and learning. NASIBA ADILOVA |

What are some of your favorite elements in your home?

MINI |

Outside, I love our organic garden. I love the pool in the summer to swim with our boys. Inside, of course, the playroom is where we watch our children stage performances for us. That’s where we see them take off into space or make arts and crafts with them. Both rooms include interactive elements to engage the imagination with themed mural wall paintings, details such as a hot air balloon basket for seating and lava rock tiles for jumping in space (all from The Tot!). NASIBA ADILOVA |

What are some of your favorite elements in the kids’ room?

MINI |

We love to sit down to craft, draw, and read. A favorite spot for me is the table and chairs we found for them. There are also bookshelves where we store all of our books, toys, and our next project. We always have an activity ready to go. Another favorite is the indoor slide that my boys love going up and down. NASIBA ADILOVA |

MINI |

What is your greatest parenting worry or fear?

It is such a huge blessing. Every single day, being a mother is the greatest joy of my life. I am so thankful that they chose me to be their mother. When I see the real challenges and real struggles of women around the world, I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful from the depth of my heart. NASIBA ADILOVA |

I have fears about everything, even the smallest things, but I guess that’s the mother in me. I fear most that I’m not a good enough parent or that I’m not doing my job well. NASIBA ADILOVA |

Talk to us about The Tot. How did the brand come to be?

MINI |

When I became pregnant, I became obsessed with reading everything I could about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. As I researched more about keeping my baby safe, I learned about toxic dyes in toys, BPA in bottles, harmful chemicals used in baby bath wash, and petroleum and alcohols in baby lotion. I was overwhelmed and scared. Eventually, it got to the point where I had done so much research that I wanted to put all of my knowledge in one online destination. I wanted to create a space that would serve as a one-stop shop and take the overwhelming choice in an uber-saturated market out and make it easy for new parents. I also wanted to build a platform that would help educate and offer credible, valid advice on parenting from experts and cover all topics even ones that may be considered NASIBA ADILOVA |

taboo. Today, The Tot serves as an online resource guide for parents looking for unbiased information and advice coupled with healthy, safe and innovative products. It’s also a platform where we can shine a light on small businesses trying to make a difference by creating better and safer products. What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

MINI |

I have wonderful support in the form of my amazing husband. I am grateful to him every single day. He makes it all possible for me. NASIBA ADILOVA |

What has been your proudest career moment to date?

MINI |

When I travel and have women come up to me in the most remote parts of the planet telling me how much they love The Tot and what a lifeline it is for them. Hearing that fuels my drive and makes me want to work so much harder! NASIBA ADILOVA |

As a working mama, tell us what a typical work day looks like for you.

MINI |

We wake up at 6 a.m. and make breakfast together. My boys help me with smoothies every morning. While they drink their smoothie and play, I make eggs, spinach and millet porridge. Then we all sit together, I’ll have my tea and coffee, and they eat their food. My husband then takes my oldest to school while my youngest goes to our homeschool. I work out and then go to NASIBA ADILOVA |

the office before it’s time to carpool and bring the oldest home for lunch together. In the afternoons, my oldest does homeschool with his Montessori teacher while the little one naps. I catch up on errands, emails, appointments. Then we have a free evening to play, hang out, or go on excursions before family dinner. Then it is time for bath and bedtime. Do you ever experience self doubt with running such a successful brand? How do you get past it?

Every single day! If you do not doubt yourself, you are not staying tuned in. You risk not challenging yourself as a result. It’s not something I dwell on, but it does push me forward and motivates me to do better. NASIBA ADILOVA |

Let’s jump right into it. Tell us about Summer Fridays and how the brand came to be.

MINI |

Summer Fridays is a clean skincare brand with quick results and good-for-you ingredients. My partner, Marianna Hewitt, and I launched in March with our first product, the Jet Lag Mask (which is a #momlife saver to the highest degree)! I was pregnant while formulating our products, so it was especially important to us to keep the ingredients super clean. I had to completely change my skincare routine at the time, which pushed us to create a line that was safe for mom, and safe for baby. LAUREN GORES IRELAND |

What is your current skincare routine like? How does Summer Fridays fit into the mix?

MINI |

Morning: Caudalie foaming cleanser, Jet Lag Mask as moisturizer, Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, and Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist after makeup. Night: Caudalie foaming cleanser, Beautycounter matte toner, and a thick layer of Jet Lag Mask as an overnight mask (especially on my undereyes)! I [also] exfoliate with our Overtime mask twice per week at night. LAUREN GORES IRELAND |

I’m also a believer in taking some solo time each day to unwind and de-stress from whatever it is you need a break from. A calm mind leads to your best skin! Let’s talk motherhood! What has surprised you most about motherhood thus far?

Prior to having my son, I felt like a lot of people would make comments like, “You better enjoy your sleep now!” or “travel while you can!” or “enjoy that body because it will never be the same!” So perhaps what surprised me most was my ability to still have a life, and a career, and a body that I loved in this new stage of life. What have you found to be hardest aspect of motherhood thus far?

MINI |

I really struggled with finding a balance between showing up for work and showing up for my son (not to mention, showing up as a wife, a friend, and a daughter to the people I love). This was probably my biggest hurdle during that first year, and it took a huge toll on me emotionally, physically, and mentally. But over time, I accepted balance doesn’t exist. I needed to learn how to embrace the imbalance, and to do it all with a grateful mind. I’m not any LAUREN GORES IRELAND |

Alone time. I really cherish my solo workouts, or coffee in the morning, or even a lunch date on my own. That downtime allows my mind to recharge and approach both my roles with a fresh start.

What is most important to you about raising your daughters?

What are you looking forward to most about raising your girls in NYC?

MINI |

The culture! The lifestyle. It’s so different from where I grew up (in the suburbs) and I love that. We made that decision to do something a little different, yet still similar. At the end of the day, I don’t believe it’s so much about where you raise them but more so about how you raise them. ARIELLE CHARNAS |

Tell us how you decided on your daughters’ names. Were there some that you loved and Brandon hated or vice versa?

MINI |

Ruby Lou we chose last minute. We had so many different names picked out for her. It was actually Brandon’s choice— I’ll give him that. It wasn’t my top choice in names but when he said it, it just felt right. I can’t picture her with any other name; she is Ruby Lou. Esme Rae we knew from pretty early on. When we heard that name we absolutely fell in love. It was different and feminine and it just seemed right. Her middle name, Rae, came from Brandon who was obsessed with Rey in Star Wars— haha! In every way possible. I am a completely different person in the best way. They have given me purpose in life. They motivate me, they’ve taught me to love unconditionally, they’ve expanded my heart a million times over. I don’t even remember who I was or what I even thought about before them! With the launch of the Something Navy brand, we know your schedule has gotten hectic! What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

It helps that my office is right next door to my apartment building. I’m constantly back and forth with the kids and work. Ideally, I think the girls in the office would prefer I stay put during work hours, but it’s hard knowing they’re home and I could be with them. Our nanny is a life saver too and we wouldn’t be able to live our lives the way we do without her. ARIELLE CHARNAS |

to the history of the home itself pushed us to use materials and spaces in ways we probably wouldn’t have if we were designing on a completely blank slate. When designing my home, I wanted to brighten and open up spaces but still keep a traditional feel. Do you have a favorite room in your home? Tell us why you love it.

MINI |

The kitchen is my favorite room. Kitchens and bathrooms are always my favorite rooms to design because we really live in those spaces the most, and should feel the best in both. I went to culinary school and worked as a chef before I dove into the world of design, so the kitchen is a very sacred space for me. I wanted my kitchen and pantry to feel seamless, clean, uncluttered, and most of all, extremely utilitarian. It turned out to be just that.

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

What are some of your favorite elements in your home? Where did they come from?

MINI |

Thank you for inviting us into your new home! Tell us about the place! How would you describe your home— the design, the feel?

MINI |

My husband and I bought this house before I got pregnant, but I knew the second I walked into the space that I would want to raise our kids here. The house is in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Los Angeles, which is really what sold the house to me, that, and the yard. It’s so charming and enchanting. The renovation was quite the process as Hancock Park is a historical neighborhood in LA, and there are so many rules and regulations about how and what you can add. The challenge that comes with designing with restrictions is also what makes the house unique. The respect and homage you have to pay

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

My mom (who also happens to be my business partner) and I are collectors of all sorts of antiques. I have antique ceramics from all over the country that I love to serve in, along with other kitchen items such as bread boxes, pitchers, etc, that bring me so much joy. My mom found the rocking horse in Leo’s room; that is just so sweet and special. Also my grandmother is an incredible artist and her pieces are all over my house and really make me feel like she is here. She lives in Israel and is truly the original “Thea Home.” We got all of our creativity and taste from her.

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

Where do you spend the most time in your home?

The kitchen. I cook constantly, whether it’s for friends, my cook book club, Leo, or just for my husband and I.

really make the room feel bigger than it is. My favorite pieces in his room are the vintage kilim rug, the chair that my mom and I found at a random antique place (for $75 that we recovered) and of course, my grandmother’s art. How did you decide on your son’s name?

MINI |

Talk to us about your son’s room. What are your favorite elements in his room?

MINI |

I love Leo’s room because it’s small and simple. I wanted his space (just like the rest of the house) to feel serene, calm, and comfortable. So much light fills the space, and the high ceilings

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

My husband and I chose Leo just because we really loved that it was a strong and simple name. Also, since I am first generation American, it was important to me that my child have a name that was easily pronounced in every language— my name sounds much prettier in Hebrew than it does in English. His middle

name, Brada, is my grandmother’s maiden name. Her whole side of the family was killed in the Holocaust and only her and her sister remain, so the name would not have been carried on. As a working mom, tell us what a typical work day looks like for you.

MINI |

A typical work day has changed a lot since having Leo. My focus has, of course, shifted, since he is still so young. I now split up my days between meetings, sourcing, and installs. Before Leo, I would cram as much in a day as possible. I am now splitting my time between Leo and work and couldn’t be happier.

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

What would you say is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

The guilt. I go back and forth between being guilty that I am either not focusing enough on my career, or not focusing enough on Leo.

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

What is your greatest parenting worry or fear?

MINI |

That Leo won’t have perspective. I know that my

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

husband and I will have to work hard to remind Leo that he is extremely privileged and that we live in a bubble. What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

MINI |

It truly is a juggling act. I wouldn’t be able to do it without my amazing support system. My mother is incredible with Leo, we have a great nanny, and of course, my husband. I also am lucky in that I run my own business with my mom, so if Leo needs to come to the office, or to source some stone in

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

What do you think is the one thing no one really warns you about?

MINI |

the stone yard, I don’t receive any judgment from anyone for doing so. I have flexibility and I am forever grateful for it. MINI |

How has motherhood changed you?

This is an interesting question because before having Leo I always imagined having a child would truly transform me into a different person. I don’t think I am a different person. I am still me, I just have an amazing addition to my life. I will say though that since having Leo, I feel more gratitude every day for how lucky I am, but also for how lucky he is.

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

What is your greatest joy of motherhood?

MINI |

Nothing is better than morning snuggles. I get so excited to wake up each morning and be with my baby in bed. There is truly nothing better.

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

For me, it was recovery after labor. Everyone’s experience is of course different, but labor for me, although it was tough, paled in comparison to my recovery post-labor. Also I had mastitis four times [while] breastfeeding, so that wasn’t fun. Not that many women understand how common mastitis is.

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

What is most important to you in raising your son?

MINI |

Enjoy every day to the fullest and be present. There are times when it is extremely challenging, or even redundant, but in those moments I remind myself that I am so lucky to have a healthy, happy, and thriving child.

DORIANNE PASSMAN |

What are you looking forward to about raising your son in LA?

CITY GIRLS Harper’s Bazaar’s Digital Fashion/ Features Director Kerry Pieri shows us around her Brooklyn Heights home and talks how life has changed since having daughter Lila— from shifts in perspective to the concept of having it all and even her apartment’s style. photography by

STEPHANIE SUNDERLAND

We spend most of our time between the living room and the kitchen. It’s important to us to have breakfast and dinner together as a family. I always want Lila to feel a part of what we’re doing. KERRY PIERI |

What are some of your favorite elements in your home? Where did they come from?

MINI |

I like how much light there is from the big windows. I also added cozy elements like throws, pillows, a shearling pouf, and a lot of blankets. I put up a lot of my own artwork. I also love how close we are to the Brooklyn Promenade because I love being near water. Lila’s a Cancer—water sign— and I think she loves it, too. KERRY PIERI |

Talk to us about your daughter’s room. What are your favorite elements in her room? MINI |

Thank you for inviting us into your home! Tell us about the place!

MINI |

We moved to Brooklyn Heights less than a year ago. It was all a bit of a whirlwind and we kind of just landed in this apartment. I was in baby girl newborn space so I picked a pink couch, a white wall-leaning mirror, and blush and gray nursery, but I love how light it all feels. There’s still a brown Bellini chair and a Moroccan rug from Beni Rugs, so I had my design sensibility about me, too!

KERRY PIERI |

Do you have a favorite room in your home or place you spend the most time?

MINI |

I love her crib. My personal style tends towards minimal with some feminine elements, but I went all pretty and girly in her room and I love it. KERRY PIERI |

How did you decide on your daughter’s name? MINI |

We say Lila Sky picked her name; it just sort of came to us. Along the way, someone said Lila means night, so her name translates to Night Sky, which is so beautiful to me. KERRY PIERI |

It’s hard to say overall, but I recently oversaw the creation and launch of our first digital cover for BAZAAR. com featuring Jada Pinkett-Smith, her mom Adrienne, and daughter Willow. Those are two moms I really respect and think we can all learn from.

We know schedules can be hectic— so tell us about yours! What does a typical day look like right now?

MINI |

We wake up around 7, my husband makes cappuccinos and breakfast, we hang out, dance to ‘90s hip hop, and then Lila helps me get dressed and put on makeup. Then I head to the office and get home around 6ish. We have dinner, read books and chill, or take a walk until she goes to sleep around 8:30. Then I either catch up on more work, read, or watch an episode of The Real Housewives. I like to keep it high/low!

What do you think about the idea of “having it all?”

MINI |

I think it puts unrealistic expectations on everyone. Just the word “have” feels wrong to me. Life is about being, not having. Being in the moment, being in love.

What has surprised you most about motherhood?

MINI |

How much fun it can be. Anything I feared I was “giving up” before was so completely unfounded. She makes me laugh so much. It’s just love from its purest place.

How has motherhood changed

I just think it put so much into perspective about what’s important. I definitely wasted a lot of time pre-Lila Sky. I wish I could get those hours back and maybe make it to Pilates now.

What is most important to you in raising your daughter?

MINI |

First and foremost, I want her to know she is loved. I want her to know she has a voice. It’s important to me that she grows up consciously— that she knows that all people are equal, that she isn’t taught a false history, and that it’s all of our jobs to lift each other up.

What advice would you give Lila?

KERRY PIERI |

Love first and stay curious.

What are you looking forward to about raising your daughter in NYC?

MINI |

I’m already taking her to all of the museums. I love art and I hope she does too.

KERRY PIERI |

Has your style changed at all since becoming a mom?

MINI |

I’m probably a little more girly since I had Lila. And I love a coordinating look with her.

Favorite places to go in NYC with kids?

She just learned to walk a few months ago so now that it’s getting cold, the Met, MoMA, the Frick, and the Whitney are perfect places to practice.
