EDITOR’S LETTER

You’ll find my home tour from page 43. Our front of house transformation is probably my favourite.

I’ve long wanted to do a Palm Springs-inspired edition. After all, it is my favourite city! There’s something magical about it – the architecture, the cactus gardens, the cool vintage shops down Palm Canyon Drive… there’s no place on Earth quite like it. In this edition, we venture inside three homes with distinct interpretations of Palm Springs style. Among them is my own home (pictured this page) – a 1960s beach shack that my partner and I have lovingly restored over the past year.

- LONI PARKER, EDITOR

Our most recent upgrade on the house involved tackling our lacklustre front yard to make way for a Palm Springs-inspired garden. It was a lot of work to get this completed in time to send this magazine to print; at times it felt like we were racing to beat the clock as if we were on an episode of The Block, with tools-down fast approaching and no end in sight! But we made it and I’m so thrilled with the results – it was worth all the sweat, cactus-spike injuries, and body aches at the end of the day.

HOW TO ADD A LITTLE MID-CENTURY MODERN FLAVOUR TO YOUR HOME

STYLE MID-MOD

The architecture of the mid1900s paved the way for modern living today. Clean lines, minimal decoration, and an abundance of glass, which allowed for indooroutdoor connection, was at the heart of midcentury modern style. Key elements from this period can be used in new builds or renovations to bring a little mid-mod style to your home.

STONE PHOTOGRAPHY HANNAH BLACKMORE FOR SLUGG, SHOT AT @SUNDOWNER_HOUSE

Natural stacked stone was commonplace in midcentury modern design. It was used both outside and indoors – typically on a fireplace surround – to add organic texture to a space.

GLASS One of the defining features of mid-century modern design is its love affair with glass. Natural light and the relationship between indoors and outdoors was a key concern. Sliding glass doors and other expansive panes of glass (for example, clerestory and awning windows) allowed light to enter rooms from multiple angles.

BREEZE BLOCKS An iconic element of modernist and mid-century architectural designs, breeze blocks gained popularity in the 1950s and ’60s. Today, there is a resurgence in breeze blocks being utilised both indoors and outside. Not only do they create interest with their patterned designs, they’re also highly functional in creating a privacy screen that allows the breeze to flow through.

TIMBER From furniture to cabinetry, and wall and ceiling panelling, timber was also commonplace in midcentury design, adding warmth to rooms. Choose rich brown tones in teak, oak and walnut to achieve mid-mod vibes.

PICTURED ABOVE + RIGHT: Slugg ‘Lucy’ pots (set of 3) in white or black $399 slugg.com.au

TILES Geometric tiles often appeared in mid-century modern design; think bold, colourful patterned encaustic tiles. Small square tiles in show-stopping colours – whether it was pastels or earthy tones – also reigned supreme. Terrazzo, penny rounds, and small mosaic tiles are also complementary styles for this period.

SPACE PROFILE

“It’s for people who want to escape while working – a creative playground to feel inspired.” - ROSIE ZOFREA

LA VILLA On a secluded corner in Sydney’s Northern Beaches is a Mediterranean-style space for creatives to gather. WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES / PHOTOGRAPHY THE PALM CO

“We wanted to create a different kind of creative space – not your typical white walls and concrete floors,” says Rosie Zofrea, the mastermind behind La Villa. Rosie, who heads up Inside Out Real Estate Styling, envisioned “somewhere where people can express themselves differently and work in an inspiring space, because that’s important to get the creative juices flowing”. La Villa, which is available for hire by artists, photographers and other creatives, is far from a typical warehouse studio. With curved lines, arched nooks, raw materials including marble, luxe detailing, and a stunning floor reminiscent of an Italian laneway, La Villa is a place for people to escape the grind and be inspired. Created in December 2020, when travel was off the cards, the dream studio was envisioned as a way to bring the Mediterranean to the Northern

Beaches. The north-facing space has soaring ceilings and abundant natural light, making it the perfect location for shoots. “We’ve had lots of different shoots to date: furniture and fashion brands, branding photographers, workshops, intimate gatherings and charity events,” says Rosie. Whether hosting workshops, private events, meetings, wellness classes, or photo shoots, guests at La Villa can enjoy an espresso while they work. Rosie describes the venue as a place for people craving an escape from their everyday environment: “It’s a creative playground to feel inspired”.

BREEZE BLOCK CO.

With our renewed appreciation for mid-century modern design, breeze blocks are back in a big way. Just ask the brother-and-sister duo behind The Breeze Block Co.

What began as a side hustle in January 2022 for siblings Cory and Candice Smith quickly became a full-time gig when people cottoned on to their stellar offering. After 15 years in the industry, bricklayer Cory was being asked to lay more and more breeze blocks, which few people knew how to do. Taking the challenge of specialisation head-on, he teamed up with his interior designer sister Candice, and within six months the side-hustle was a fully-fledged business. “We offer a unique service in Australia,” says Cory. “The technical and construction knowledge we can provide that applies to our supply and install service to not only customers but also trades is irreplaceable.” Cory explains that each breeze block is handmade using a dry-press hydraulic method. Afterwards, the blocks air dry for 10 days before they’re ready 26

for transport or laying. “The most familiar designs, such as ‘Star’, ‘Flower’ and ‘Square’, are based on the original pattern from Palm Springs back in the 1950s and ’60s, whereas the more modern ones, such as our 3D styles ‘Leaf 2.0’ and ‘Flower 2.0’, have been created to evolve the breeze block into a true architectural piece,” says Candice. Candice even designs custom breeze blocks for clients using 3D modelling software, and she can create 3D visuals of projects to demonstrate to clients just how impactful the final look will be. Enabling the flow of light and air, breeze blocks beautifully combine form and function and are the perfect solution for an array of design applications.

WORDS REBECCA JAMIESON DWYER PHOTOGRAPHY COASTPARK CREATIVE BUILD PARAGON HOMES

SAGUARO

This stunning new build in Blue Mountain Heights, just north of Toowoomba, combines mid-century Palm Springs vibes with innovative design features.

HOME TOUR

F R O N T F A Ç A D E The home was named after the Saguaro cactus. Aptly, the gardens are filled with cacti and an assortment of sunloving plants, most of which were sourced from Beautiful Gardens Exotic Nursery & Design. The low-line profile of the house is simple in its design and features timber-look battens.

When you’re a real estate photographer who’s shot iconic houses across the country, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to inspiration for your own home. This was the case for Ben Walker, who sketched out thousands of possibilities before designing their home, ‘Saguaro’, which he shares with his partner Adriana and their two dogs. “I’ve photographed over 15,000 homes over the last decade, and I’ve probably drawn 10,000 floorplans,” he says. “I’d been writing notes in my phone of all the cool ideas I’ve seen and layouts I liked. Then one day we found the right block, with the right view, and designed Saguaro from scratch.” The low-profile house, built by Paragon Homes, is filled with clever design elements that enhance the beauty of the space and make it a joy to inhabit. “One of my favourite things is the microcement in the bathroom,” Ben says. “I also love the skylight in the shower, our brushed brass ABI Interiors tapware, and the pool and daybed area looking out over that incredible view.” Saguaro’s open-plan interior feels epic and expansive, but the addition of sliding doors means the home can easily be partitioned for privacy or leisure, creating smaller, more intimate spaces. “The bedroom wing is to the left of the front door and the living area is to the right, so when we have guests, we can close off half the house,” explains Ben. “We also have a floor-to-ceiling cavity door that divides the media room in half. You can watch a movie in complete darkness or open the door to play a game of pool while watching football on the big screen.” > > 32

Ben also designed the outdoor spaces, spending months meticulously planning the layout and the vegetation, and building a 3D model to perfect his vision. “I had help from a landscaping team for the hardscaping — the retaining walls, irrigation and fencing — but I planted 90 percent of the plants myself,” he says. Named after the classic three-pronged cactus, Saguaro (pronounced with a silent ‘g’) is an apt moniker for an abode where the spiky plants reign supreme; landscaping was a key element in the home’s design rather than an afterthought. The front garden – affectionately named the Zen garden – is filled with drought-loving, low-maintenance cacti, creating a showstopping space that’s as peaceful as it is stylish. “On a hectic windy day, it’s all so still, which is very relaxing,” says Ben. Out the back of the home, the entertaining area leans into modernist desert style, with circular stepping stones, an infinity pool and a fire pit, punctuated by views of the Australian bush. Every window was made as large as possible, bringing the outside in and helping the home’s inhabitants feel close to nature. “Instead of a splashback in the kitchen, we installed a big panel of glass, which brings the Zen garden inside,” says Ben. “We absolutely love it here; the whole house is such a vibe.”

HOUSE Loni Parker and Mark Zeidler have lovingly polished this mid-century gem on Brisbane’s bayside. WORDS CASEY HUTTON / PHOTOGRAPHY COASTPARK CREATIVE

HOME TOUR

Adore editor Loni Parker has a deep affinity for Palm Springs. “When I’m there, it feels strangely like home,” she says. “Everything about it – the cool cactus gardens, the breeze blocks, the midcentury architecture – just speaks to me.” She’s twice attended Modernism Week on her visits to the desert oasis city, captivated by the area’s iconic style. “The overwhelming thing about Palm Springs is that pretty much all the homes have amazing mid-century modern architecture. They don’t knock these gorgeous homes down like we do in Australia,” she points out. Loni and her partner Mark dreamed of creating a slice of mid-century modern paradise in their own sun-soaked corner of Australia. “We would type ‘mid-century’ into the search bar on real estate sites and see what popped up. We were willing to move for the right home, and looked far and wide,” she recalls. The renovators’ dream they eventually found was virtually on their doorstep. “It was one street over from where we were living, which is hilarious. I thought we would move a bit further away than that!” While the house – with its low-slung facade, clerestory windows and high ceilings – ticked multiple boxes, it needed significant work. “What it didn’t have going for it was a tonne of asbestos sheeting, a tired garden, and a million concrete hexagon pavers with weeds growing in between,” says Loni. “Plus, the floorplan was really bitsy and needed an overhaul.” Loni had a clear vision for the home. She designed the new floorplan herself, managing to integrate a second bathroom and a second living space into the existing footprint. “By opening up certain rooms we were able to achieve a much more cohesive and modern layout,” she says. They also opted to demolish the tacked-on laundry to maximise deck space at the back of the house. A European laundry is now tucked behind bifold doors in the kitchen. The renovation process was arduous at times; the couple lived without a kitchen for a year, and there were plenty of other challenges along the way. “One of the big budget blowouts was having to replace one set of our original timber windows at the front – that cost an arm and a leg. One of the reasons we bought the house was for those windows, and here we were replacing them. It was nuts!” >

F R O N T E N T R Y “The entryway features an arch tile that I designed in collaboration with TileCloud to match our front door. It adds a punch of colour to our facade. I’m so proud and over the moon with how it’s turned out,” says Loni. Front door handle from Lo & Co; door painted in Taubmans ‘Silver Leaf’; ‘Adore’ tiles from TileCloud.

The home’s revamped entryway makes a statement with its retro green door and matching custom tiles. Over the threshold, a sitting room, guest room and main bedroom occupy the front part of the house. A main bathroom was created by pinching space from the dining room, allowing the home’s existing bathroom to become an ensuite (hidden like a luxe surprise behind the main bedroom’s wardrobe doors!). Past a third bedroom, the layout opens to a kitchen and living space, with views across the garden from the back deck. Clean lines and balanced forms keep the interior crisp and chic, while natural fabrics, rattan and timber accents, and brushed brass hardware add texture and warmth. Orb light fittings in the kitchen and bathrooms, as well as VJ ceilings in the hallway, main bedroom and living area, pay homage to mid-mod style. A palette of earthy neutrals fosters a calming environment in the bedrooms. Meanwhile – riffing on the distinctive greens of cacti and succulents outside – colour takes centre stage in the kitchen and main bathroom. “I think the kitchen is my favourite room,” Loni reflects. “The spaces where I’ve been most brave with colour are the ones I love the most.”

E X T E R I O R The front and back exterior walls were completely reclad in new James Hardie cladding. “We had professionals remove the old asbestos sheeting along with the vinyl cladding. It was replaced with a combination of Linea weatherboards and Axon cladding, to create a coastal feel for our mid-century beach shack,” explains Loni. “We also used the ‘Hardie Groove Lining’ for our front eaves, which ties in with some of our internal ceilings.”

HOME TOUR

This property’s original house – a tiny Paddington workers’ cottage – has been lifted above a whitewashed carport, alongside which circular stepping stones lead from the street to a side entryway. Walking onto the new porch, where patterned encaustic tiles meet curved spotted-gum panelling, you realise you’re in for a treat. Along a polished concrete corridor, you pass two bedrooms, a powder room, and the main bathroom, before the same tiles reappear – beckoning you up a few steps to an airy openplan kitchen, down into a sunken lounge, then out onto a balcony facing the Brisbane city skyline. Building and interior designer Christopher Gyzemyter, of CG Design Studio, explains that the tile was chosen in response to the client’s love of mid-century style. “The palette

and pattern of this tile informed our colour choices throughout,” he says. “It’s been used to purposefully lead you through the public areas of the home.” This visual wayfinding clue is apt in a house that unfolds intriguingly over three levels on a sloping block. The lower level houses another bedroom, a bathroom with a traditional sauna, and a sitting room that opens onto a tiled terrace and garden. “The small lot didn’t allow for extensive gardens; our solution was to drape the building in greenery that could be seen from the internal spaces,” says Christopher. The house is built around a circular pool, which is situated midway between the two lower levels. A palm tree extending through a cut-out in the pool deck is an unmistakable nod to Palm Springs.

“Drawing on mid-century and Palm Springs design, this home is exemplary of historical design trends re-interpreted for the contemporary home. Embracing the Queensland indoor-outdoor lifestyle, meant that the interior design carried through into the exterior spaces of the home.” - CHRISTOPHER GYZEMYTER, CG DESIGN STUDIO

HOME TOUR

Christopher points out that the home’s design resisted a derivative interpretation of mid-century style. “The key to the success of this project lay in not replicating details straight out of the mid-century period,” he says. Instead, key elements of the era – such as open-plan indoor/outdoor living, geometric tiling, wood panelling, and clean lines – have been adapted to suit Queensland’s lifestyle and climate. In the living areas, generous glazed windows and doors can be thrown open to refreshing breezes, encouraging activity to flow between interior and exterior spaces. Meanwhile, the sheltered ground floor recalls “the cool feeling of the Queenslander undercroft”. Colour changes the energy across different spaces in the home. Expansive public areas make way for a more cocooned atmosphere in the bathrooms. “These spaces were naturally more shaded, and we wanted to make them fun,” says Christopher. From flamboyant pink in the main bathroom, to mustard in the ensuite, luxurious marble in the powder room, and dark green in the ground-floor bathroom, each space celebrates bold colour and balances it with bespoke timber features. >

The main bedroom occupies the top level of the home, with stunning views across a roof garden to the city. The original cottage – which now houses the stairway and a dressing room – is joined to the new extension by a double-height glass window and skylight. “The bedroom and ensuite are divided without solid walls,” Christopher explains. “Rather, the vanity is a beautifully crafted piece of functional timber joinery, allowing light transfer and capturing breezes.” Working closely with Natural Lifestyle Homes, Christopher’s team at CG Design Studio were engaged to design both the building and the interior, which, he says, allowed them to “touch all aspects of this project”. The result is a carefully layered and beautifully unified home in which interior and exterior spaces interact, overlap, and sing.

AURUM With Hollywood and Palm Springs as its muses, this garden – designed for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show – departs from the Aussie backyard playbook.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN MINT DESIGN / WORDS CASEY HUTTON BUILD TLC POOLS WITH ASSISTANCE FROM HABITAT CONSTRUCTION PHOTOGRAPHY ERIK HOLT

OUTDOOR TOUR

“Aurum was a response to the typical built-in barbecue with roofed alfresco area that is so ubiquitous in our backyards,” explains Darin Bradbury, director at Mint Landscape Design. “We wanted to design the opposite of that: something that was open and light, with no heavy overhead structures, and very much integrated with plant life.” The temporary garden was built on top of a substructure in Carlton Gardens for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, allowing the Mint team ultimate freedom to design without a client brief. The outdoor space, with its languorous and hedonistic overtones, was aspirational. “No one goes to a fashion show to see clothes that people are already wearing,” Darin points out. “They go to see designers pushing the boundaries and exploring new ideas.”

<

Inspiration was found in the hills of Hollywood, where, Darin explains, “gardens are very much attached to nature, with an emphasis on alfresco dining under the stars”. There was also a nod to Palm Springs via resort-style daybeds, and a mix of succulents and Mediterranean plants.

P L A N T S Over 1,000 plants were included in this garden design, supplied by Speciality Trees, Warners Nurseries, Prestige Plants, and Living Sculptures.

< While these American reference points may feel a world away from Australia, they in fact dovetail nicely with our climate and native vegetation. “It’s surprising really that you see very few gardens blending arid-style plants with Mediterranean and Australian natives,” says Darin. Plantings were selected with a focus on drought tolerance – something that Australian natives, Mediterranean species and succulents have in common. “Our aim was to show how these varied plant styles can be fused together to create something beautiful,” says Darin. “We wanted to use the bold foliage of Agaves next to the soft form of Lomandras, or the silver foliage of Teucrium against the dark green of Rhaphiolepis.” Aurum’s dining and poolside zones were connected by garden beds and permeable pathways, rather than pavers, decking or concrete. Using less hardscaping can keep the budget down while creating a layered and interesting outdoor space, Darin notes. “Overhead structures can be used to create a sense of enclosure around social areas,” he adds. “They don’t need to be fully enclosed; any light structure will make a space feel more inviting and intimate.” Channelling Hollywood’s mythic traditions of freedom and individualism, Aurum was an invitation, above all, to live a little. “Don’t feel constrained to design your garden around one particular style,” Darin advises. “Be bold and mix it up.”

PA L M B E A C H B E AUT Y “We could achieve our desired look with minimal works; the home already had a skillion roof and grand front door,” says homeowner Dani Hinchsliff. Working with the existing foundations and their love for mid-century design, the husbandand-wife duo set about renovating their home’s front garden and façade. The couple cleared the existing garden and had two breezeblock screen walls built. They tackled the landscaping themselves, hand-selecting cacti from Architectural By Nature. A Livistona Australis palm tree sits centre-stage and is complemented by an assortment of cacti and succulents, including Pachycereus pringlei, Euphorbia ‘Cowboy’, Golden Barrel, Silver Torch, Queen Victoria Agave, and Agave ‘Dragon Toes’. “Crushed gravel helped us create a higher-level garden bed and then we finished it off with large boulders and stones scattered throughout. The curves in the garden edging make it feel playful.” “We replaced the front door and painted it in British Paints ‘Peachy Dream’. We also had the exterior bricks painted in Dulux ‘Casper White Quarter’ and replaced the old lighting fixtures with opal sphere lights.”
