EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR’S LETTER The themes I work on for each issue of Adore are nearly always a reflection of my life at that time, and this issue is no different. I’ve been longing for more space, for nature and fresh mountain air, and I can hear the country calling my name. A tree-change might be on the cards for us this year, and with that possibility has come a growing fascination with modern farmhouse-style homes. This issue, we’re touring three homes that each approach farmhouse style differently. First up, we step inside a small studio space located in Tallebudgera, that has gone from derelict shed to charming country cottage, thanks to a clever renovation. The studio will accommodate the owners while they knock down and rebuild their family home, and down the track it will also be a space for guests. Wait until you see the ‘before’ pics – you won’t believe it’s the same space! Our next home is a modern farmhouse inspired by the homes in Queenstown. This striking barnstyle house, painted in ‘Monument’, is a new build nestled amongst the trees in the secluded village of Nunderi in Northern NSW. We think it perfectly balances contemporary elements with rural sensibilities. We also explore a relatively new home that’s smack-bang in the middle of the Gold Coast yet so character-filled it feels like it’s been there for a hundred years. This gorgeous compact house is a lesson in how you can make the most of your space with savvy planning and design. I loved putting together our fire pit feature (see page 76) as we recently completed our own fire pit area (pictured this page). It’s been over a year in the making and I’m looking forward to using it this winter… that is, if we haven’t packed up and moved to the country by then! Happy reading.

KITCHEN HOT LIST

Neutrals and muted tones will continue to dominate kitchen palettes this year. Interior designer Jessica Enander Dunne opted for an entirely neutral palette for this beautiful beach-house kitchen (pictured left and on previous page). “I wanted it to feel timeless and open. We chose lots of texture for this kitchen. The white tiles and cladding on the front of the island add visual interest in a subtle way.” “My favourite part of this kitchen is the short splashback with the little ledge for displaying items, which allows the owners’ personal style to shine through,” says Jessica.

muted tones

Natural dolomite stone in ‘Super White’ was used in the space to add textural interest. “It was selected for its durability and beautiful grey veining,” Jessica points out. “I always prefer using natural materials where possible.”

It’s out with the shiny and in with the patina: aged or antique brass finishes are in. With so many brands now stocking aged-brass tapware and handles, it’s never been easier to add some old-world charm to your kitchen.

2

Free-flowing shapes are in. From islands to cabinetry, 2024 will be the year of curves.

In this kitchen (pictured above) designed by AM Interior Studio, a dropped, curved roof visually separates the kitchen from the living space, as does the terrazzo tiled floor (which also features a curved edge!). The curvy motif is repeated in the island on a round plinth, and in the wavy open shelf (inspired by the Robert Gordon wall sconce). Add to that some rounded travertine handles and bulbous hanging pendants and you have yourself a curvylicious kitchen.

statement rangehood “In a small space, our goal was to achieve an engaging design that felt open. Instead of crowding the kitchen with narrow overhead cabinetry that offered minimal storage, we opted for an aesthetic rangehood feature clad in a white contemporary Kit Kat tile,” says Naomi. “This tile was chosen for its raised pattern and texture, offering a nod to the traditional character of the home. Additionally, the curve on the rangehood mimics that of the waterfall bench, strategically designed to soften the entry into the kitchen.”

timeless carrara

Carrara marble was chosen for its timeless beauty and elegance in this kitchen designed and built by M.J. Harris Group. Interior designer Naomi McLean elaborates: “Carrara marble is often seen in traditional designs, due to its soft white base and delicate grey veining. Lo & Co ‘Hubble’ knobs complement this choice by injecting a playful and contemporary feel, achieving a delightful balance in the overall aesthetic.”

“A column island detail was ideal for this tricky floor plan as it anchors the curved island bench, allowing the space to flow and feel a little more elevated than your typical U-shaped kitchen design,” says interior designer Jessica Viscarde of Eclectic Creative.

“We also designed this island bench with column detail instead of a heavy bank of drawers to allow the kitchen space to feel open and airy and not cut off. As you can see the kitchen peeking behind, we colour matched the paint on the column to the cabinet colour for consistency. This curved corner and column style end detail of the bench space, is a lovely area for gathering and ideal for stools to be pushed under with ease.”

playful colour

This kitchen, designed by interior designer Aude Charmetant, plays with colour and pattern to create a light-hearted space. “I wanted this kitchen to feel like walking into a Mediterranean garden,” says Aude. “I therefore used natural materials and earthy tones to reflect nature: terracotta tiles, sage cabinets, and a fun pink marble benchtop.” “The Popham Design floor tiles are handmade in Morocco using natural pigments. Here they set the mood and define the kitchen area.” Aude suggests looking to nature for your colour inspiration: “Soft, muted tones such as earthy terracotta and green are a safe choice.”

deep green If you want to inject some natural colour into your kitchen, interior designer at M.J. Harris Group Courtneay McGrath suggests green tones. “Green is a colour that has universal appeal and is versatile in its application. I see green making a big comeback in kitchens.” In this soulful kitchen designed by Courtneay, deep-green cabinetry combines with walnut tones for a high-end look. “The perfect complementary joinery colour for this design was Polytec ‘Florentine Walnut’.” “The green joinery is a 2pac finish in Haymes ‘Spruce Grove.’ The colour has a beautiful depth that brings the space to life and establishes the organic, tranquil feel of the design,” says Courtneay.

This kitchen, designed by Gonia Chylinska of GC Interior Design, features clean lines, natural materials and a minimalist aesthetic. Gonia has embraced Japandi style (a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian influences) by selecting elements like a linen lantern pendant light, oak shelving, and handcrafted pottery and ceramics. “Our Japandi-inspired kitchen features simple and organic materials,” says Gonia. “The tranquility of our kitchen design was achieved by creating ample negative space throughout the open shelving, which allows the eye to rest.” An element of industrial style is also present in this kitchen, with the use of a brick-inspired splashback and exposed rangehood.

10

sleek appliances

The most important part of any kitchen is its appliances, and interior designer Gonia Chylinska has done a great job at blending them into this sleek space. The integrated dishwasher and refrigerator/freezer create a minimalist look. “By strategically integrating and matching the colour of the appliances with the cabinetry, these essential elements seemingly disappear,” says Gonia. The star of this kitchen has to be the striking Falmec Polar Canopy Rangehood, which pays homage to the industrial environment of Port Kembla, where this home is located. “Inspired by the area’s steelworks, and its iconic landscape marked by towering chimneys, the choice of this rangehood is reminiscent of industrial architecture,” explains Gonia. Pitt gas burners integrated into the benchtop add to the sleek industrial vibe of the kitchen. 24

BUILT FOR LIFE

Nestled on two acres along the scenic Australian coastline sits a unique, modern barn-style home that perfectly balances its contemporary design with influences of nature and classic country charm.

From every external vantage point, the barn reveals a different appearance, yet one that is consistently a fusion of modern and traditional. Attractive barn doors, pre-primed weatherboard cladding and an all-white aesthetic is a statement blend of classic and contemporary. The contrast of clean lines and soft curves is as striking as the colour palette: crisp white accented with warm timber tones, soft greens, and natural materials, inside and out. An abundance of large windows floods the internal space with natural light. And opening onto the spectacular decked alpine porch, two sets of timber French doors seamlessly unite the indoors with outside. The owners have added an indulgent alfresco bath and shower, further 28

TALLEBUDGERA

RETREAT

HOME TOUR

Trading a modern beachside villa for a property with a ’70s house and a rundown old shed isn’t everyone’s dream, but the Allen family have never looked back.

WORDS NICHOLA DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY COASTPARK CREATIVE

Before moving to their rustic property in Tallebudgera, Lisa Allen, her husband Roy and their three young boys lived in a new villa that Roy had built in front of Currumbin Creek, walking distance to the beach and cafes. Despite the wonderful location and design of the home, the family quickly realised that it didn’t quite align with what was important to them. “The backyard was very small and our neighbours – although they were lovely – were close to us. I’m certain they could hear everything from my very loud, crazy boys!” says Lisa, whose boys were four, two, and six months old at the time. The Allens decided that the best thing for the family was to have a bit more land for the children to run around on. “We stumbled upon this place by attending the auction but not actually planning to bid for it,” says Lisa of the property they ended up buying in neighbouring Tallebudgera. “When no one was bidding we looked at each other and thought, why not?” The property included a home built in the 1970s, as well as a derelict old shed. Lisa and Roy then began a remarkable renovation of the shed, with the idea that the family could live in it while the main house was demolished and rebuilt. “It was a must to include a fully functioning kitchen and bathroom,” explains Lisa. “There was already a very old, falling-apart bathroom tacked on the end of the shed, so we based the layout around that.” “Being surrounded by bush, we instantly knew we would want to do a country-style cottage with a black exterior to complement the greenery surrounding us,” Lisa recalls. “Roy wanted to have a try at the charred cladding ourselves, so every bit of cladding was burnt here on site, which I think adds to its character even more.” In just a year, the Allens transformed the shed into a stunning studio-style cottage, with Roy mostly chipping away at the project on weekends.

The charming cottage, which opens up to a patio overlooking the landscape beyond, has been designed to feel like it was always there. The open-plan layout includes a kitchen, bed, fireplace and sitting area, and a separate bathroom. “Although it’s small, we tried to make every area as detailed as possible, introducing raw and natural materials,” says Lisa. “There are no plain white walls in the cottage!” Plans for the new house build are being finalised and, while it’s under construction, the family will move into their renovated cottage. “The plan is to use the cottage for our kitchen, living and bathroom, and we will all sleep in our large shed,” says Lisa. “It will be an adventure – that’s for sure!” The large family home that they build will be more modern in style, Lisa explains, and the cottage will ultimately be used for visitors – and maybe even as a photoshoot location or Airbnb one day. Until then, the cottage will be home to the Allen family, including its newest member: Lisa and Roy’s newborn baby girl.

From the outside, the dark frame and pitched roofline of this home offer a dramatic counterpoint to the lush greenery that surrounds it. From the inside, huge expanses of glass beckon the eye outward to the forest treeline and an ever-changing sky. “Day and night, it’s a beautiful reminder of how lucky our family is,” says homeowner Christal Alexander. Family is at the heart of this home. The seeds for its design, Christal explains, were planted over holidays to Queenstown with her husband Luke and their three children. “We’ve spent hours driving and exploring their rolling green hills and all these stunning black, high-pitched, single-level barns with timber detailing – the five of us falling more and more in love with the area each time we visit.” The couple resolved to build a similar home in the Tweed region of New South Wales where they both grew up. The house would be Luke and Christal’s fourth build and third renovation together. Nevertheless, it wasn’t smooth sailing. Christal recounts their initial impressions of the block of land in Nunderi: “It was bad! Hilly, with weeds and grass taller than a double-storey house. We couldn’t even get to the land to see it! There was a road, but it was so overgrown it wasn’t viewable.” The location, however – ten minutes from Cabarita Beach and within easy reach of the highway to Byron Bay – was perfect, and Christal’s vision for a Queenstown-style home held strong. She sketched out her own plan – a modern barn with a central living zone between an adults’ and a children’s wing – then handed it over to Josh Jardine at Jardine Design Space. “He transformed my layout into a masterpiece, creating all the finer details,” she says. >

“The property had a one-bedroom, fully off-grid shed that we lived in for the two years it took to clear the land and build. My husband purchased a 23-tonne excavator and, with every spare minute he had, he cleared, dug, and moved a lot of dirt.”

>

Then, when the build was due to begin in early 2022, torrential rain drenched the region and caused widespread flooding. “Although our land wasn’t directly affected by the floods, our town, friends, and family were. The land was too wet to even walk on,” Christal recalls. The build was delayed another six months. After a nine-month build, the home – named ‘ZEB’ after their three children, Zayd, Eva and Brax – was finally completed. Its dark silhouette and the scale of its windows give it a luxurious and contemporary edge, which has been balanced beautifully with rustic elements and organic textures and materials. The design prioritises connection with the outdoors via large sliding doors from all the rooms. Christal’s favourite space is the main bedroom, with its luxe ensuite and 180-degree views of the property, including the pool and sauna. “Our first morning in the house, my three children all came in and lay on the bed with us, and I thought, ‘This is just heavenly’,” says Christal. “Picture-perfect it was.”

TEMPEST

HOUSE Traditional English-cottage style meets the Aussie seaside in this lovingly renovated home on the Gold Coast. WORDS CASEY HUTTON / PHOTOGRAPHY COASTPARK CREATIVE

“My husband and I lived in London in a Victorian terrace house many years ago and that had a big influence on our taste,” Meg Tempest recalls. “We love old homes, old music, and old furniture.” The couple relocated from Melbourne to the Gold Coast with their son back in 2017, and the closest thing to a traditional English home that they could find was this replica Victorian workers’ cottage built in 2003 – not exactly antique! “We loved the facade and some of the details inside, like fretwork, ornate cornices and ceiling roses,” says Meg. “That was about the extent of the character though.” Meg and her husband set to work comprehensively transforming the home, doing much of the work themselves. “There isn’t an inch of this house that we haven’t touched!” she says. It’s hard to believe that they were novice renovators when they started. “The only thing I’d done before renovating this home was paint a bedside table,” says Meg. “We’ve learnt it all from Instagram, YouTube and watching some of the trades we’ve hired over the years.” Taking the DIY route has saved them plenty of money – like the time they limewashed their exterior bricks with a $12 bag of hydrated lime. “It’s better than paint as it lets the brick breathe and it doesn’t peel or flake. The downside is you have to wear PPE when applying it and it’s very timeconsuming because you need to paint it on by hand with a masonry brush,” Meg explains. “It totally transformed our house for a ridiculously low cost.” A timber front deck, which they built themselves on top of existing apricot tiles, completes the cottage facade. Inside, the relatively simple and low-cost DIY addition of picture moulding in their bedroom, powder room, hallway and living areas also made a > big impact.

MEG’S TIPS FOR TRADITIONAL STYLING

Finding vintage furnishings “Facebook Marketplace is the first place I search anytime I’m on the hunt for something – new or old. I love op shops for decor like decorative plates, vases, ceramics, original art, and frames. I also buy a lot of vintage accessories and textiles such as cushion covers, tablecloths and quilts from Etsy.”

Buying rugs “I typically buy vintage or antique Turkish rugs. Depending on what room I’m looking for, I’ll search for the colours and size I need, then find a pattern I love. I buy all of mine online, either from Etsy (you’ll need to trawl thousands of listings) or from the Australian seller Heir & Loom, who have a small, curated selection of rugs.”

Installing wallpaper “The most important thing you can do is hang the first piece straight. Use a laser level to make sure it’s perfectly straight; don’t go off the walls as they’re not always straight, especially in older homes.”

K I T C H E N Kaboodle cabinetry painted in ‘French Green’ by Porter’s Paints; knobs and handles from Hepburn Hardware; wall light by Emac & Lawton; antique dining table and vintage Bentwood chairs from Facebook Marketplace; vintage pendant lights from Etsy, tapware from Farmhouse Sinks.

The couple’s most recent triumph is their country-style kitchen. An inspired decision to create an eat-in kitchen by removing the island bench, running cabinetry along the entire back wall, and bringing a long dining table into the middle of the room has resulted in a beautiful and functional space. “We love to have people over for dinner and host family get-togethers, and we were also desperate for more storage,” says Meg. “If you’re short on space, I’d highly recommend this layout.” The kitchen reno allowed Meg and her husband to once again flex their DIY muscles. They redesigned their existing kaboodle kitchen using kaboodle’s online 3D planner and hired a local builder to install. They painted the ‘Alpine’ profile doors in serene ‘French Green’ by Porter’s Paints, as well as staining the timber benchtop to a darker walnut. Underpinning the many updates to this home is a cohesive vision, which relishes pattern, shape and colour. Repeated motifs of scalloped edges, quaint lampshades, vintage artworks, floral details and timber touches are woven through a muted palette of greens and blues. “When I’m mixing patterns, I like to mix the scale and design,” Meg reflects. “I’ll pair a small floral with a larger one, then something geometric like a stripe or check. You can never go wrong with stripes and florals together!” The laundry and garden are next on Meg’s to-do list, as well as hanging wallpaper in the powder room: “It’s Sandberg ‘Raphael’ and I absolutely love it!”

On a whim, Nat Wheeler’s realtor husband sent Nat and Kristy the listing for a sweet little log cabin on a three-quarter-acre block in Macedon, Victoria. It would be the first and only property they’d view; moments after inspecting the cabin, Nat and Kristy made an offer and by that evening it was a done deal. “The uniqueness of the property really stood out to us,” says Kristy. “I mean, how many log cabins do you see in Australia? We loved that it reminded us of a quaint retreat in the heart of Scandinavia – a nod to the Scandi roots of our retail business – and the fact that it is less than an hour’s drive from Melbourne had us sold!” Beyond that, Kristy says there was something magical the moment they set foot on the property for the inspection. “There are some homes that just have that ‘feeling’ that you can’t quite explain,” says Kristy, “and this cabin had it in spades! From the timber logs to the cosy fireplaces, the pitched ceilings, and incredible landscaped gardens with rows of silver birches – we knew it was truly special.” Nat and Kristy picked up the keys to the cabin on a Monday, and on Tuesday the builders were on site to kick off the renovation. Ever since the contract had been signed, the interior design team at norsu Design had been creating mood boards and colour palettes, and brainstorming ideas on how best to use the spaces. “Once design concepts and finishes had been selected, we were so fortunate to have been connected to our incredible builders Sean and Paul from Exclusive Constructions,” says Kristy. “Together, they brought our vision to life in record time, with the help of our amazing suppliers. >

Fire pits In recent years, a fire pit area has become a standard inclusion for backyard designs. We take a look at some shining examples and ask what it takes to make the perfect pit.

“This fire pit area is actually a water tank! We paved the top of the tank and used round steppers leading up to the fire pit so that the circular concrete tank feels deliberate and integrated into the garden design,” says Mint Design director Darin Bradbury. “Fire pits are best located away from the house so that they don’t send smoke directly into the living areas. That said, we really like to connect a firepit to the alfresco area so that you have the formal outdoor dining area connected to the casual seating area around the fire pit. That way, when you’re entertaining, those two spaces can accommodate different groups.”

*

“Paving or pebbles are a perfect base for a fire pit. A 19mm graded pebble or crushed granite provides a softer aesthetic that is more cost effective than paving. Your choice really does come down to budget and how regularly the fire pit will get used.” - D A R I N B R A D B U RY

OUTDOOR TOUR

Walking through the garden at Oak Cottage, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d slipped into the pages of a childhood storybook. Alongside a big old oak tree, purple blossoms, softly textured foliage and long grasses create a cloistered, whimsical atmosphere. Landscape designer Tim Pilgrim describes it as “a contemporary naturalistic planting using cottage garden perennials”. Repetition and restraint were key to the design, where contrasting plant forms are unified by a restricted palette of greys, greens and pastels. Tim took colour inspiration from the bush adjacent to the property and from the house itself. “I’m generally a maximalist, so paring back my palette isn’t easy,” Tim admits. “I’m always happy when I do though.”

<

Before Tim began work on the property, there was a bland expanse of lawn in front of the house, and some dishevelled shrubbery. “The redeeming feature was the large oak – the namesake of the cottage,” says Tim, whose design used the tree as an anchor and retained a couple of other mature plants, including a Camellia and Westringia. “I take a hands-on approach and see whether I can shape or prune something that’s established before I omit it completely.”

*

“I like to think in odd numbers – for example, five repeats of five plants per block of planting. It can create balance and harmony.” - T I M P I LG R I M

< A winding path from the property’s front gate leads to three basalt steps, which descend to a circular courtyard framing the oak tree in front of the home. “The garden beds are mounded up, making the space feel intimate, with the added bonus of providing drainage for the wet climate and heavy soils of Macedon,” Tim explains. To the east of the oak is a fire pit. “This small sitting area is retained by upright railway sleepers, where a dry garden planting on the most exposed part of the block blends into a woodland planting under the oak and a cottage perennial garden surrounding the main courtyard,” says Tim. A restful dining area paved in reclaimed brick sits on the western side of the tree. The garden’s relaxed and organic feel is the result of careful planning. Plants are repeated to lead the eye along pathways, says Tim, with consideration given to the timing of flowering. “It’s a layered planting designed for different peaks, successions and scenes through the seasons,” says Tim, explaining that even the silhouettes of bare seed heads and decayed plant forms in winter have their own appeal, before the garden is cut back in August.
