Part of the Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Illington was excavated in 1949, when 200 cremation urns and 3 inhumations were mapped and lifted, and the remains of about 200 other vessels were recovered. The cremated human bones were the subject of a pioneering study by the late Calvin Wells. Alan Davison's parish survey did not locate any Early Saxon domestic sites, and the original Saxon holding may have been larger than the medieval parish.

An Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Oxborough, West Norfolk By Kenneth Penn Examines results of excavation on a mound in Oxborough parish. An excavation was carried out on a low mound in Oxborough parish where a metal-detector survey and fieldwalking had recovered early Saxon objects and prehistoric flints, suggesting that the mound represented the remains of a barrow, later re-used as the focus of an Early Saxon cemetery. Finds suggested Early Saxon graves, most destroyed by ploughing. This result has implications for excavation strategy and the interpretation of fieldwork evidence in areas of intense arable farming.
