The Soviet Destruction of Army Group South Ukraine and Southern Poland 1943-1945

Ian Baxter

Following the destruction of Sixth Army at Stalingrad in February 1943, Army Group South slowly withdrew westwards, using the Dnieper as a fortified position In May 1944, Red Army troops defeated Army Group South and Army Group A on the Dnieper.

In July, troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front launched an operation into the Crimea. The offensive coincided with other Red Army operations further north. Slowly, the powerful Russian attacks forced the tattered German army group to retreat hundreds of miles west, into Eastern Poland and Romania. There, the Germans would fight a series of desperate battles until the remnants surrendered in early May 1945.

Drawing on rare and previously unpublished images accompanied by detailed captions and text, the book gives a fascinating analysis of the destruction of Army Group South in southern Russia between 1944 and 1945.

12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend Volume 2 - From Operation Goodwood to April 1945

Massimiliano Afiero

Raphael Riccio

Formed in 1943 with the express purpose of blocking the forthcoming Allied invasion in the West, the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend carved out a reputation as one of the Wehrmacht’s foremost panzer divisions.

The British Operation Goodwood against Caen in July 1944 was followed by Totalize in Augusts. Within a week thousands of German troops were encircled in the Falaise Pocket. Around ten thousand Hitlerjugend soldiers escaped piecemeal, regrouping to fight in the battles along the Maas and the ill-fated Ardennes offensive of December 1944. Deployed to Hungary in 1945 to stem the Red Army advance, the division fought against overwhelming odds until the final battles in Austria, on Reich soil, in late April 1945

Packed with photographs, maps and profiles, this Casemate Illustrated follows the actions of the 12th SS Panzer Division throughout its existence.

War Along the Wabash

The Ohio Indian Confederacy’s Destruction of the US Army, 1791

This is the story of how a small band of determined indigenous peoples defended their homeland, destroyed an American army, and forced a shift in the way in which the United States waged war. On 11/4/1791, a coalition of warriors determined to set the Ohio River as a permanent boundary between tribal lands and white settlements faced an army led by Arthur St. Clair—the resulting struggle ended in the greatest defeat of an American army at the hands of Native Americans. The road to the battle of the Wabash began when St. Clair was appointed to lead an army into the heart of the Ohio Indian Confederacy, building a string of fortifications along the way. He would face difficulties in recruiting, training, feeding, and arming volunteer soldiers. From the moment St. Clair’s force began its retreat, the men blamed the officers, and the officers in turn blamed their men. For over two centuries historians have blamed either the officer corps, enlisted soldiers, an entangled logistical supply line, poor communications, or equipment. The destruction of the army resulted in Congress authorizing a regular army in 1792. This book, the result of 30 years’ research, puts the battle into the context of the last quarter of the 18th century, exploring how the central importance of land ownership to Europeans arriving in North America resulted in unrelenting demographic pressure on indigenous tribes, as well as the obstacles standing in the way of the fledgling American Republic in paying off its enormous war debts.

Rangers, Scouts, and Raiders Origin, Organization, and Operations of Selected Special Operations Forces

Michael

Throughout history there has always been a need, in military forces, for special units. In the past, these units have usually been ad hoc formations that were disbanded after their mission was complete. It has only been since the early 1950s that such units have remained active, but even in recent times special purpose, special mission units have been organized and used for a period of time or for a specific mission and then either deactivated or replaced by other units.

This unique approach to the history of American special forces examines their development through a number of operations, ranging from the French and Indian War in the 18th century through to the Vietnam War. From the Son Tay raid to the Force at la Difensa and Rogers’ Rangers, the operations are diverse in both organization and purpose, but all contributed to the overall mission of their theater or larger organization, thus proving the continuing need for special units throughout history and even today.

Flawed Commanders and Strategy in the Battles for Italy, 1943–45

Andrew Sangster

Pier Paolo Battistelli

Wars never run according to plan, perhaps never more so than during the Italian campaign, 1943–45, where necessary coordination between the different armies added additional complexity to Allied plans. Errors in the strategies, tactics, the coalition tensions, and operations at campaign command level can clearly be seen in firsthand accounts of the period. This new account examines the Italian campaign, from Sicily to surrender in 1945, exploring the strategy, intentions, motives, plans, and deeds.

Rome to the Po River

The 362nd Infantry Division, 1944–45

Heinz Greiner

Linden Lyons

In late 1943, 362. Infanterie-Division was formed around the remnants of 268. Infanterie-Division, which had been disbanded after high casualties on the Eastern Front. It fought at Anzio in early 1944, overrun when the Allied broke through the German lines in April. During its time at Anzio, the division was involved in the Benedicta massacre.

Facing the Allied advance, it suffered further losses and had to be rebuilt once more. Returning to the front, it then fought until late April 1945, when it surrendered.

This account focuses on the efforts of 362. Infanterie-Division to turn back the Allied forces from their advance north in late 1944 and early 1945. Its commander, Heinz Greiner led the division in a series of counterattacks against Allied forces outside Rome that slowed Allied progress. Greiner’s experience as commander of 362. Infanterie-Division throughout this period means that it offers a unique insight into the battle from the German perspective.

Midway Submerged

American and Japanese Submarine Operations at the Battle of Midway, May–June 1942

Mark W Allen

Midway Submerged is a comprehensive examination of a little-known aspect of this pivotal naval battle, explaining how Nimitz used his submarines at Midway, and the Japanese misused theirs based on a flawed tactical plan. Based on in-depth archival research not only into the battle itself, but also submarine design and construction, and tactical and operational doctrine for both the United States and Japan, it brings a whole new dimension to the discussion of the battle of Midway. It examines the intended role of the submarine in the plans and doct rine of both navies, and what the submarines were expected to accomplish for both fleets during the battle, before assessing the actual accomplishments, successes, and failures of the submarine forces on both sides. Of particular importance, the book offers an analysis of how well these vessels fulfilled the expectations placed on them by their respective naval planners, concluding that submarines played a more important role in the outcome than has been previously understood.

The One Ship Fleet USS Boise—WWII Naval Legend, 1938–45

Phillip T Parkerson

The USS Boise was one of the most famous US combat ships of WWII, already internationally renowned following her participation in the naval battles in the Solomons in 1942. In 1943 the Boise was sent to the Mediterranean theater, there to participate in the invasions of Sicily, Taranto, and Salerno, and enhancing her fame by destroying enemy tanks during armored counterattacks in both Sicily and Salerno. From the Mediterranean, Boise was sent to the S.W. Pacific theater to join the US 7th Fleet for the campaign in New Guinea in 1943–44 and then the invasion of the Philippines. She fought in the battle of Leyte Gulf, in the Surigao Strait, where battleships faced off against each other for the last time in maritime history. She also fought off kamikazes at Leyte and later at Lingayen Gulf during the invasion of Luzon. MacArthur used her as his flagship for the Luzon attack, adding to her fame, then after helping retake Corregidor and other islands in the Philippines, Boise carried the general on a triumphant tour of the islands. After MacArthur left the ship in June 1945, she returned to the US for overhaul which was just complete as the war ended, by which time she had been awarded 11 battle stars, more than any other light cruiser in her class.

A Pair of Aces and a Trey 1st Lieutenants William P. Erwin, Arthur

Byrne V. Baucom: America’s Top Scoring World War I Observation Pilot and Observers

E. Easterbrook, and

Trained as a pursuit pilot but assigned to an observation squadron, the indefatigable Bill Erwin flew twice as many hours over the front lines as any other pilot in the 1st Aero Squadron. His two primary observers, Byrne Baucom and Arthur Easterbrook, were both previously Army infantry officers and deadly marksmen. It was their dedication, bravery, and courage under fire that kept them alive throughout the Château-Thierry, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne campaigns.

Erwin’s dramatic life culminated in his disappearance during the 1927 Dole Air Race, while Easterbrook became a repected figure in Washington. Revered in his home state of Texas, Baucom became a pilot in the 1920s and rose to become an instructor at an advanced flying school. He died in an aircraft crash in 1928. While Erwin became Dallas’s ‘favorite son’ in life, three thousand people paid tributes to Baucom at his funeral, showing his immense popularity. Easterbrook was the only one of the three to survive to reach his military career potential, retiring as a brigadier general after World War II. Alan Roesler retraces the lives and careers of the three men in this new joint biography.

Winning French Minds Radio Propaganda in Occupied France, 1940–42

Denis

The period 1940 to 1942 was the most volatile of the war, with the Nazis capturing large parts of western Europe and dominating on the Eastern front. At this time France was separated into two nominally independent zones, and public opinion could easily have been swayed. This could have had disastrous consequences for any future Allied attempt to liberate Europe, and so the battle for French minds was launched using the new technology of radio. Using original primary sources from archives in Britain and France, broadcast recordings, radio magazines, and interviews conducted by British Intelligence with those arriving from France during the war, this is a fascinating and unique insight into wartime radio propaganda from 1940 to 1942.

Keeping the Peace Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 During the Cold War 1946–1991

Steven

The Thunderbolts of VMFA-251 were reactivated as a Marine Air Reserve squadron in 1946. Their Cold War only included a few weeks of traditional combat operations—in Korea—but they would undertake constant training exercises and deployments from 1946 to 1991 as they prepared for a potential war. These deployments and exercises, while not “at war,” were not without dangers. The Thunderbolts lost many personnel and aircraft, but they persevered as the armed forces of freedom-loving nations faced the ongoing threat of communism for over four decades. Compiled from archive records and interviews by a veteran of VMFA-251, this account narrates how the Thunderbolts worked hard to maintain the peace. They were indeed Custodians of the Sky.

Burning Horizon

British Veteran Accounts of the Iraq War, 2003

Julian Whippy

Prof Peter Caddick-Adams

Codenamed Operation Telic, the British component of the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was the largest gathering of British troops since the Second World War.

While the British public prepared for the worst as its soldiers were facing weapons of mass destruction, most servicemen and women were under no illusion that they were invading Iraq to rid the people of Saddam Hussein. While much has been said about WMD and Tony Blair’s government, not nearly enough has been heard from those men and women that took part in Operation Telic. Based upon dozens of veteran interviews, personal diaries and archival material, this book tells their stories, in their own words. From controlling the vast Allied Air Forces at 34,000 feet in an AWACS plane down to submariners beneath the warm waves of the Persian Gulf firing Tomahawk Cruise missiles, from the steaming hot turret of a Challenger Tank as it is peppered with RPGs, to being on your belly in a sandstorm disarming unexploded bombs — these veteran accounts cover the whole spectrum of experiences.Polarized public opinion and the post-war media portrayal of the war has detracted from what was achieved by these forces, when tasked to do so, often with insufficient or inadequate resources. These are their stories of courage, fortitude, pride, and brotherhood amidst the harsh realities of modern asymmetric warfare.

Bennett spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft I, where he started the newspaper POW WOW, secretly read by 9,000 prisoners. Just Another Day in Vietnam

Keith Nightingale’s accomplishments in both military and civilian life largely contribute to the excellence of Just Another Day in Vietnam as a memoir of unusual depth as well as breadth. Uniquely adopting a third-person omniscient point of view, Nightingale eschews the “I” of memoir in favor of multiple perspectives and a larger historical vision that afford equal time and weight to ally and enemy alike. Nightingale moreover offers the point of view of an American advisor to elite Vietnamese troops, a vital perspective regrettably underrepresented in the literature of Vietnam.

The Greek Hoplite Phalanx

The Iconic Heavy Infantry of the Classical Greek World

The Greek hoplite and the phalanx formation have been the subject of considerable academic debate over the past century. Dr Richard Taylor provides an overview of the current state of play in the hoplite debatet. But the book goes further: offering a new perspective on the hoplite phalanx. He argues that the Greek phalanx was different in degree but not in kind from other contemporary heavy infantry formations and that the hoplite debate, with its insistence on the unique nature of the hoplite phalanx, has obscured the similarities with other equivalent formations. The result is a fresh take on a perennially popular subject.

The Spartan Supremacy 412-371 BC

Sparta was a small city which consistently punched above its weight in the affairs of classical Greece. For two centuries her warriors were acknowledged as second to none. Yet at only one period in its long history did the home of these grim warriors seem set to entrench itself as the dominant power in the Greek world. This period includes the latter stages of the Peloponnesian War from 412 BC to the Spartan victory in 402, and then down to the Spartan defeat by the Thebans at Leuctra in 371 BC. Few books have covered this time period, particularly when compared to the ample coverage of the Peloponnesian War. Bob Bennett and Mike Roberts untangle the complexities of this important but unduly neglected period for the modern reader.

The Iliad and the Odyssey The Trojan War: Tragedy and Aftermath

The Iliad dealing with the final stages of the Trojan War and The Odyssey with return and aftermath were central to the Classical Greeks’ self identity and world view. A book-by-book synopsis and commentary discuss the heroes’ relationships, and the narratives’ shimmering presentation of war. Whether you’ve always wanted to go deeper into these extraordinary works or are coming to them for the first time, this book will help you understand and enjoy Homer’s monumentally important work.

Lepanto 1571 The Madonna’s Victory Nic Fields

With over 200 ships per side, the battle of Lepanto was the largest naval battle in sixteen centuries, the last major fight between fleets composed entirely of the muscle-driven galley, and one of the decisive naval battles of history. These slender ships were the direct descendants of the Classical trireme but carried cannon and marines bearing firearms, although massed archery and cold steel still played a major rôle on the fateful day. Nic Fields gives an excellent account of this fascinating and spectacular battle, which sank the perception of Ottoman dominance and the inevitability of Islam’s westward encroachment beyond the Balkans.

A Naval History of the Peloponnesian War

Ships, Men and Money in the War at Sea, 431404 BC

Marc G de Santis

Naval power played a vital role in the Peloponnesian War. The conflict pitted Athens against a powerful coalition including the preeminent land power of the day, Sparta. Athens’ initial tactical superiority was demonstrated at the Battle of Chalcis, where her ships literally ran rings round the opposition but this gap closed as her enemies adapted.

Marc De Santis narrates these stirring events while analyzing the technical, tactical and strategic aspects of the war at sea.

Themistocles The Powerbroker of Athens

Jeffrey Smith

This is an exciting new biography of Themistocles of Athens, architect of the Greek victory over the Persian invasions of 490 BC and 480 to 479 BC. While his role in the Persian wars is naturally a major theme, Themistocles’ career before and after those conflicts

is also considered in detail. Themistocles was a leading exponent of a new kind of populist politics in the young democracy of Athens, manipulating the practice of ostracism (exile) to get rid of his political rivals. Jeffrey Smith explains Themistocles’ rise to a position of virtual hegemony which allowed him to institute his far-sighted policy of preparation against the growing Persian threat.

Greece Against Rome

The Fall of the Hellenistic Kingdoms 250–31 BC

Philip Matyszak

Towards the middle of the third century BC, the Hellenistic kingdoms (the fragments of Alexander the Great’s shortlived empire) were near their peak. In terms of population, economy, and military power each individual kingdom was vastly superior to Rome, not to mention in fields such as medicine, architecture, science, philosophy, and literature.

Philip Matyszak relates how, over the next two-and-a half centuries, Rome conquered and took over these kingdoms while adopting so much of Hellenistic culture that the resultant hybrid is known as ‘Graeco-Roman’.

Armies of the Roman Republic 264–30 BC History, Organization and Equipment

Gabriele Esposito

In 264 the Romans were pitted against the might of Carthage in the first of the three Punic Wars, which would push Rome to the brink but end with the destruction of this great rival city. In the following two centuries they would clash repeatedly with the Gauls, and they also defeated the Hellenistic Successor states, proud heirs to the military legacy of Alexander the Great, a process completed by the annexation of Egypt in 30 BC. Gabriele Esposito describes the tactics, organization, weapons and equipment of the Roman forces involved in these wars. As usual, his clear, accessible text is supported by dozens of color images of replica weapons and equipment in use.

The Army of the Roman Republic

From the Regal Period to the Army of Julius

Michael

From the moment its last king was expelled (traditionally in 753 BC), the Roman republic had to fight for its very survival. Centuries of almost continuous warfare saw Rome’s armies evolve in response to a wide variety of threats which were met with mixed fortunes though always with ultimate success. As defense of the homeland turned to territorial expansion, Roman forces also had to adapt to sustained campaigns in varied terrain and climates, not to mention the changes in the Roman republic itself. Michael Sage traces the development of the republic’s army from its foundation, down to the time of its most famous leader, Julius Caesar.

Constantius III Rome’s Lost Hope

Ian Hughes

Constantius is an important, but almost forgotten, figure. He came to the fore in or around 410 when he was appointed Magister Militum (Master of Troops) to Honorius, the young Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. His predecessor, Stilicho, had been murdered by his own troops and much of Gaul and Hispania had been overrun by barbarians or usurpers. Constantius married Honorius’ sister and was eventually proclaimed his co-emperor. However, the Eastern Roman Emperor, Honorius’ nephew, refused to accept his appointment and Constantius was preparing a military expedition to enforce this recognition when he died suddenly, having been emperor for just seven months.

The Army of the Early Roman Empire 30 BC–AD 180 History, Organization and Equipment

Gabriele Esposito

The legionary soldier of the early Empire period, with his distinctive segmented armor, is one of the images most closely associated with ancient Rome. This was the army that enforced the Pax Romana at the point of a gladius and maintained the greatest empire the world had yet seen. Gabriele Esposito describes the tactics, organization and equipment of the Roman army at the height of its powers, considered by many to be the most efficient and powerful fighting force of the ancient world. Rome Rules the Waves A Naval Staff Appreciation of Ancient Rome’s Maritime Strategy 300 BCE - 500 CE

James Bloom

The commonly-held view of Rome’s naval history is that it essentially ended with the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra’s fleet at Actium in 31 BC. The author takes the view that sea power is not merely about naval engagements. In its deeper sense, sea power is the steadfast exertion of command of the sea lanes to project trade, suppress piracy, transport troops and supplies and protect land-based military garrisons and expeditions.

Justinian II

The Roman Emperor

Who Lost his Nose and his Throne and

Regained Both

Justinian II became Roman emperor at a time when the Empire was beset by external enemies. His forces gained success against the Arabs and Bulgars but his religious and social policies fuelled internal opposition which resulted in him being deposed and mutilated (his nose was cut off) in 695. After a decade in exile, during which he strangled two would-be assassins, he regained power through a coup d’etat with the backing of the erstwhile Bulgar enemy (an alliance sealed by the marriage of his daughter, Anastasia). His second reign was seemingly harsher and again beset by both external and internal threats and dissension over doctrinal matters.

Carthage at War

Punic Armies c. 814–146

BC

Joshua R Hall

The Carthaginians are well known as Rome’s great enemy of the three Punic wars and Hannibal, their greatest general, is a household name. There have been few studies dedicated to detailed analysis of Carthaginian armies and warfare throughout the city-state’s entire existence. Joshua Hall puts that right with this in-depth study of their tactics, equipment, unit organization, army composition and operational effectiveness. Drawing on all the available archaeological and literary evidence, the author shows the development of Carthage’s forces and methods of warfare from the ninth century BC to the city’s demise. The result is the most in-depth portrait of the Carthaginian military available in English.

The Roman Imperial Succession

John D. Grainger

John D Grainger analyses the Roman imperial succession, demonstrating that the empire organized by Augustus was fundamentally flawed in the method it used to find emperors. Augustus’ system was a mixture of heredity, senatorial and military influences, and these were generally antagonistic. Consequently the Empire went through a series of crises, in which the succession to a previous, usually dead, emperor was the main issue. The infamous ‘Year of the Four Emperors’, AD 69, is only the most famous of these crises, which often involved bouts of bloody and destructive civil war, assassinations and purges.

Sejanus Regent of Rome

John S McHugh

The figure of Sejanus has fascinated from ancient to more modern times. Sejanus, the emperor Tiberius’ infamous Praetorian Prefect, is synonymous with overreaching ambition, murder, conspiracy and betrayal. According to the traditional storyline, this man craved the imperial throne for himself and sought it by isolating the naive emperor in his island pleasure palace on Capri whilst using his control over the Praetorian Guard, coupled with his immense power and influence in Rome, to purge the capital of potential opponents. His victims supposedly included the emperor’s son, Drusus, poisoned by his own wife who had been seduced by Sejanus.

Cataclysm 90 BC The Forgotten War That Almost Destroyed Rome

Philip Matyszak

A military and political history of the Social War of 90-88 BC. This tells the story of the revolt of Rome’s Italian allies (socii in Latin - hence the name of the war). Because these Italian allies had the arms, training, and military systems of the Roman army which they usually fought alongside, all Rome’s usual military advantages were nullified. This brought the war down to a clash of generals, with the Roman rivals Gaius Marius and Cornelius Sulla spending almost as much time in political intrigue as combat with the enemy. The interplay of personalities, high-stakes politics and full-scale warfare make for a taut, fast-paced tale.

The Pope’s Army

The

Papacy in Diplomacy and War

John Carr

For much of its 2,000-year history, the Roman Catholic Church was a formidable political and military power, in contrast to its pacifist origins and its present concentration on spiritual matters. The period of political and military activism can be dated to roughly between 410, when Pope Innocent I vainly tried to avert the sack of Rome by the Visigoths, and about 1870, when Pope Pius IX was abandoned by his protectors, the French Army, and forced to submit to the new Italian state by surrendering any political power the Vatican had left.

The Battles That Created England 7931100

How Alfred and his Successors Defeated the Vikings to Unite the Kingdoms

Arthur C Wright

In popular imagination the warfare of the Early Middle Ages is often obscure, unstructured, and unimaginative, lost between two military machines, the ‘Romans’ and the ‘Normans.’ In point of fact, we have a considerable amount of information at our fingertips and the picture that should emerge is one of English ability in the face of sometimes overwhelming pressures on society, and a resilience that eventually drew the older kingdoms together in new external responses which united the ‘English’ in a common sense of purpose. Our principal source, replete with reasonably reliable reportage, are the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, comprehensive in collation though subject to oral distortion and mythological excursions.

The Rise and Fall of the Mounted Knight

The medieval mounted knight was a fearsome weapon of war, captivating and horrifying in equal measure. They have been both held up as a paragon of chivalry, whilst often being condemned as oppressive and violent. Occupying a unique place in history, knights on their warhorses are an enigma hidden behind their metal armor, and seemingly unreachable on their steeds. This book seeks to understand the world of the medieval knight by studying their origins, their accomplishments and their eventual decline. The standout feature of this book is the focus on the equine half of the partnership, from an author who practices the arts of horsemanship on a daily basis, including combat with sword and lance.

Matchlocks to Flintlocks Warfare in Europe and Beyond, 1500–1700

William Urban

In the early modern world three dominant cultures of war were shaped by a synergy of their internal and external interactions. Latin Christian western Europe, Ottoman Islam, and central and east Europe: Poland/Lithuania, Livonia, Russia, the freebooting Cossacks, a volatile mix of variations on a general Christian theme. William Urban’s fascinating narrative is an integrated account of early modern war at the sharp end: of campaigns and battles, soldiers and generals. Temporally it extends from the French invasion of Italy in 1494 to Austria’s Balkan victories culminating in the 1718 Treaty of Peterwardein. Geographically it covers ground from the Low Countries to the depths of Ukraine.

The Crusades in 100 Objects

The Great Campaigns of the Medieval World

James

Foralmost the entire medieval period, the Catholic church sanctioned military campaigns against what it perceived as its enemies. Other, lesser-known crusades were subsequently mounted with the aim of Christianizing the more remote regions of northern and north-eastern Europe, as well as against the Cathars in southern France. The advance of the Ottomans into the Balkans saw further crusades to halt the Muslims in Bosnia and Serbia, and the re-conquest of Spain from the Muslim Moors. Such diverse theaters of conflict have resulted in an equally diverse number of relics still to be found in a score of countries.

Medieval Military Combat Battle Tactics and Fighting Techniques of the Wars of the Roses

Dr Tom Lewis OAM

Indeed, we know more of how the Roman and Greek armies fought than we do of the 1300 to 1550 period. So how did medieval soldiers in the War of the Roses, and in the infantry sections of battles such as Agincourt and Towton, carry out their grim work?

Medieval Military Combat shows, for the first time, the techniques of such battles. It also breaks new ground in establishing medieval battle numbers as highly exaggerated, and that we need to look again at the accounts of actions such as the famous Battle of Towton, which this work uses as a basic for its overall study.

Chris Glenn Japan had long been at civil war until brought under the rule of Oda Nobunaga, and then, following his death at the hands of a traitorous general, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After Hideyoshi’s death in 1598, a power struggle emerged between those loyal to the Toyotomi, and those who supported the second most powerful warlord, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Leading the loyalist cause was Ishida Mitsunari, who gathered a force of around 130,000 samurai, while the Tokugawa commanded just 80,000.

The Fall of Cromwell’s Republic and the Return of the King

From Commonwealth to Stuart Monarchy, 1657–1670

Timothy Venning

This book completes the series of studies of the ‘British Revolution of the Three Kingdoms of England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland’ and covers the period from the fall of the ‘failed state’ and Protectorate in 1657 to the restoration of the Stuart monarchy and Charles II in 1660, examines the Restoration settlement in depth and a high point in Stuart pro-French and Catholic policy - contrary to the 1660 Restoration understanding when Charles II vowed reluctance ‘go on {his} travels again’ and follows the Stuart Restoration and pro-French - and pro-Catholic foreign policy to 1670.

A Warrior Dynasty

The Rise and Fall of Sweden as a Military Superpower, 1611-1721

Henrik O Lunde

This book examines the meteoric rise of Sweden as the preeminent military power in Europe during the Thirty Years War in the 1600’s, and then follows its line of warrior kings into the next century until the Swedes finally meet their demise, in an overreach into the vastness of Russia. A small Scandinavian nation, with at most one and a half million people and scant internal resources of its own, there was small logic to how Sweden could become the dominant power on the Continent. That Sweden achieved this was due to its leadership—a case-study in history when pure military skill could override the demographic and economic factors which have in modern times been termed so pre-eminent.

You Have to Die in Piedmont!

The Battle of Assietta, 19 July 1747. The War of the Austrian

Succession in the Alps

Giovanni Cerino Badone

‘You have to die in Piedmont!’ An old folk song, still played in the western Alps, tells of the French regiments that were coming from the Mongeneve Pass in order to attack a combined Austro-Sardinian force entrenched on the Assietta Plateau, 2,500 meters up in the Cottian Alps. The battle occurred on 6/19/1747, and was the bloodiest single day action in the whole military history of the Alps. The Battle of Assietta became a military legend for the Sardinian forces, and subsequently for the Italian Army, but no serious attempt to reconstruct the event was ever made. This is the first full work to address the history of this battle, based firmly on archival and printed sources, and fully supported by maps and illustrations as well as a comprehensive index.

Shakespeare’s Other Son?

William Davenant, Playwright, Civil War Gun Runner and Restoration Theatre Manager

R E Pritchard

Sir William Davenant (16061668) was in his time widely known as ‘Davenant the Poet’. The son of an Oxford vintner (or quite possibly the natural son of his godfather, William Shakespeare), he wrote poems for and about the Court of Charles I, and on to replace Ben Jonson as Poet Laureate and collaborate with Inigo Jones in composing spectacular Court masques, as well as writing many successful plays. Celebrated and important in his day, Davenant is now surprisingly little known. This enterprising study introduces modern readers to his wit, poetry, and growing scepticism as to Court and aristocratic values, and his developing feminist sympathies. Here, select excerpts and summaries bring this entertaining writer to a new, wider audience.

The Battle of Plassey 1757

The Victory That Won an Empire

Britain was rapidly emerging as the most powerful European nation, a position France long believed to be her own. Yet with France still commanding the largest continental army, Britain saw its best opportunities for expansion lay in the East. Yet, as Britain’s influence increased through its official trading arm, the East India Company, the ruler of Bengal, Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah, sought to drive the British out and turned to France for help. The ensuing conflict saw intimate campaigns fought by captains and occasionally colonels and by small companies rather than big battalions. They were campaigns fought by individuals rather than anonymous masses; some were heroes, some were cowards and most of them were rogues on the make.

Leading Like the Swamp Fox The Leadership Lessons of Francis Marion

Francis Marion is certainly the stuff of which legends are made. His nickname “The Swamp Fox,” bestowed upon him by one of his fiercest enemies, captures his wily approach to battle. The embellishment of his exploits in Parson Weems’ early biography make separation of fact from fiction difficult, but certainly represents the awe, loyalty, and attraction he produced in those around him. His legacy is enshrined in the fact that more places in the United States have been named after him than any other soldier of the American Revolution, with the sole exception of George Washington. Even today’s U.S. Army Rangers include Marion as one of their formative heroes. Surely much about leadership can be learned from such an intriguing personality. 241159, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 256 pages

History of the British Army, 1714–1783 An Institutional History

Stephen Conway

Much has been written about the British army’s campaigns during the many wars it fought in the eighteenth century, but for over 150 years no one has attempted to produce a history of the army as an institution during this period. That is why Stephen Conway’s perceptive and detailed study is so timely and important. Taking into account the latest scholarship, he considers the army’s legal status, political control and administration, its system of recruitment, the relationships between officers and men, and the social and economic as well as constitutional interactions of the army with British and other societies.

The Road to Yorktown

The French Campaigns in the American Revolution, 1780-1783, by Louis-FrançoisBertrand du Pont d’Aubevoye, comte de Lauberdière

Norman Desmarais

The fate of the American Revolution had yet to be decided when a remarkable 21-year-old Frenchman arrived in America. Louis-François-Bertrand, the Count of Lauberdière, belonged to an old noble family that traced its heritage back to the Crusades. His father was musketeer of the guard of King Louis XV. More important, his uncle was General Rochambeau, the commander of all French forces in America. The Count of Lauberdière kept one of the most remarkable diaries of the entire war, and it is published here for the first time as The Road to Yorktown: The French Campaigns in the American Revolution, 1780-1783, translated and edited by Norman Desmarais.

The Battle of Minden 1759

The Impossible Victory of the Seven Years War

The fighting in Europe during the Seven Years War hung in the balance. After initial successes the Austro-French forces had been driven back across the Rhine. With the opposing sides reinforcing their armies, the campaign of 1759 was going to prove decisive. Britain and her German allies met the French at Minden in Germany. Due to a misunderstanding of orders the British infantry actually attacked and dispersed the French cavalry. That action is still commemorated on 1 August each year with the wearing of roses by the infantry and artillery regiments whose predecessors picked flowers and put them in their coats as they passed through German gardens on the way to the battle.

William of Orange and the Fight for the Crown of England

The Glorious Revolution

Brian Best

In 1688, a vast fleet of 463 ships, twice the size of the Spanish Armada, put to sea from Holland. On board was William of Orange with 40,000 soldiers – their objective, England. The Protestant William had been encouraged by a group of Church of England bishops to risk everything and oust the Catholic King James. He landed at Tor Bay in Devon and soon gathered enough support, including that of John Churchill, the future Duke of Marlborough, to cause King James to flee to France. It had been seen, in the eyes of most in England and Scotland as a ‘Glorious’ Revolution.

He sailed under a pirate flag, was shipwrecked and marched to the gallows to be hanged, only to be reprieved at the eleventh hour. All this before he was thirty years old. The Sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo

1810 and 1812

The Peninsular War

Tim Saunders

The area astride the Spanish/ Portuguese border between the respective fortresses of Ciudad Rodrigo and Almeida was the focus of the Peninsular War for much of the period from the autumn of 1809 through until 1812.

The fortress of Ciudad Rodrigo that dominated the country between the Rivers Agueda and Côa, was one of the ‘Keys to Spain’ for any army attacking either east or west across the frontier. With the defeat of the Fifth Coalition at Wagram in 1809, Napoleon was free to turn his attention to the rebellious Iberian Peninsula and the small British Army.

Memoirs of a French Napoleonic Officer Jean-Baptiste Barres, Chasseur of the Imperial Guard

Jean-Baptiste Barres

These lively memoirs date from the time of Barres’ entry into the Chasseurs Velites (skirmishers, or light infantry) of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard in 1804.

Always modest in recounting his own exploits, Barres was not only at the cannons mouth, but also a participant at such spectacular events as the Coronation of the Emperor Napoleon in Paris and Rome, the torchlight procession on the eve of Austerlitz, the meeting of the two Emperors at Tilsit, and the magnificent military display in the Champ de Mars..

Volume 3 - Mounted Troops - Lithuanian Tartars, Horse Artillery, Train, Medical Service, Headquarters, Polish Krakus

André Jouineau

Jean-Marie Mongin

Explaining how the Guard was organised into Old, Middle and Young Guards, in this volume, the illustratorresearcher André Jouineau shows the colonel-generals, the grenadiers, the chasseurs à pied, fusiliers, velites, flanqueurs, wards, workmen, sappers, doctors, magistrates and foot gunners.

The Two Battles of Copenhagen 1801 and 1807

Britain and Denmark in the Napoleonic Wars

Gareth Glover

The Danish capital of Copenhagen was the site of two major battles during the Napoleonic Wars, but the significance of the fighting there, and the key role the country played in the conflict in northern Europe, has rarely been examined in detail. In this absorbing and original study Gareth Glover focuses on these two events, using original source material to describe them from the British and Danish perspectives, and he shows how they fitted into the little-understood politics of this region during this turbulent phase of European history. His account is fascinating reading and an important contribution to the history of the period.

Year of Glory

The Life and Battles of Jeb Stuart and His Cavalry, June 1862–

June 1863

Monte Akers

No commander during the Civil War is more closely identified with the “cavalier mystique” as Major General J.E.B. (Jeb) Stuart. And none played a more prominent role during the brief period when the hopes of the nascent Confederacy were at their apex, when it appeared as though the Army of Northern Virginia could not be restrained from establishing Southern nationhood. Year of Glory focuses on the twelve months in which Stuart’s reputation was made, following his career on an almost day-to-day basis from June 1862, when Lee took command of the army, to June 1863, when Stuart turned north to regain a glory slightly tarnished at Brandy Station, but found Gettysburg instead.

The Cornfield Antietam’s Bloody Turning Point

David A Welker

Antietam. For generations of Americans this word—the name of a bucolic stream in western Maryland—held the same sense of horror and carnage that the simple date 9/11 does for modern America. But Antietam eclipses even this modern tragedy as America’s single bloodiest day, on which 22,000 men became casualties in a war to determine our nation’s future.

Antietam is forever burned into the American psyche, a battle bathed in blood that served no military purpose, brought no decisive victory. This much Americans know. What they didn’t know is why this is so—until now.

Strangling the Confederacy

Coastal Operations in the American Civil War

While the Civil War is mainly remembered for its epic battles between the Northern and Southern armies, the Union was simultaneously waging another campaign—dubbed “Anaconda”—that was gradually depriving the South of industry and commerce, thus rendering the exploits of its field armies moot. Strangling the Confederacy examines the various naval actions and land incursions the Union waged from Virginia down the Atlantic Coast and through the Gulf of Mexico to methodically close down every Confederate port that could bring in weapons or supplies.

Searching for Irvin McDowell

The Civil War’s Forgotten General

Irvin McDowell was a prominent figure during the early months of the Civil War. With so much at stake, he was called upon to lead the Union’s largest Eastern Theater army. Pressed by the media and President Abraham Lincoln to move into Virginia and defeat the Confederates gathering there, McDowell led his neophyte army out to the plains of Manassas and was soundly defeated. McDowell went on to hold an independent command in northern Virginia during the Peninsula Campaign and serve in the Army of Virginia under Maj. Gen. John Pope during the disastrous Second Bull Run Campaign. Despite his significant contributions, a lack of personal papers left him in obscurity. 216202, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 240 pages

Pirate Killers

The Royal Navy and the African Pirates

On the Barbary Coast of North Africa, pirates preyed on shipping in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic as they had done for centuries and they terrorized the populations of the coastal towns. To them, piracy was a way of life, and the great sea-powers of the day couldn’t stop them. Then, in one of the most remarkable and neglected anti-piracy operations in maritime history, the Royal Navy confronted them, defeated them, and made the seas safe for trade. This is the subject of Graham A. Thomas’s compelling new study of one of the most pernicious episodes in the history of African piracy.

Bold Privateers Terror, Plunder and Profit on Canada’s Atlantic Coast

Roger Marsters

In war, disrupting and depleting the enemy’s supply of goods is the way to victory. This collection of fascinating stories of the era’s notorious privateers begins with Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville who led a campaign against the Hudson’s Bay Company posts in the Far North, and a few years later against east coast strongholds.

Author Roger Marsters uncovers the exploits of French, English and American privateers.

The Siege that Changed the World Paris, 1870–1871

N S Nash CBE

The Siege of Paris from September 1870 to the city’s capitulation in January 1871 was the result of Louis Napoleon III, Emperor of France’s disastrous decision to declare war on Prussia. The Prussian Army of King William I proved vastly superior to their adversaries. By 19 September Paris was encircled with the population discontented, disillusioned and rebellious. Civil disorder was rife as starvation took a grip. On the inevitable surrender in late January and the declaration of the German Empire, France’s humiliation was complete. This in turn led to the temporary establishment of the Paris Commune an embryonic communist government, and civil war.

Britain at War with the Asante Nation 18231900

The White Man’s Grave’

Stephen Manning

Britain fought three major wars, and two minor ones, with the Asante people of West Africa in the nineteenth century. Only the Sudanese and Zulu campaigns saw a greater loss of life, both for the British and the indigenous population. Like the Zulus, the Asante were a warrior nation who offered a tough adversary for the British regulars – they were respected for their martial skills and bravery. And yet these wars have rarely been written about and are little understood. That is why Stephen Manning’s vivid, detailed new history of this neglected colonial conflict is of such value.

Over 8,500 men perished in less than 10 hours of fighting, a horrendous loss, even by World War One standards. This book gives voice to many of the German Navy participants, from a German perspective, on this tumultuous battle fought over 100 years ago.

Burn, Bomb, Destroy The German Sabotage Campaign in North America, 1914–1917

Michael Digby

Many believe that World War I was only fought “over there,” as the popular 1917 song goes, in the trenches and muddy battlefields of Northern France and Belgium— they are wrong. There was a secret war fought in America; on remote railway bridges and waterways linking the United States and Canada; aboard burning and exploding ships in the Atlantic Ocean; in the smoldering ruins of America’s bombed and burned-out factories, munitions plants, and railway centers; and waged in carefully disguised clandestine workshops. This is the true story of German secret agents engaged in a campaign of subversion and terror on the American homeland before and during World War I. 240046, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 264 pages

Lawrence of Arabia’s Secret Dispatches during the Arab Revolt, 1915–1919

T.E. Lawrence

Fabrizio Bagatti

T. E. Lawrence’s dispatches during the Arab Revolt have been published before, but only in an edited and incomplete form, as they were printed for a strictly limited wartime readership in the Arab Bulletin. Now, in this scholarly edition, they are published in full for the first time. They give us a direct inside view of his dealings with the Arab leaders and show us how he presented them to his superiors in Cairo. These wartime writings reveal vividly his impressions of the periods he spent in the desert and the conditions he found there, and they record how the Arab uprising developed and how he became increasingly involved in it.

Machine-Guns and the Great War

Paul Cornish

The machine-gun is one of the iconic weapons of the Great War and indeed of the twentieth century. Yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. During a four-year war that generated unprecedented casualties, the machine-gun stood out as a key weapon. In the process it took on an almost legendary status that persists to the present day. It shaped the tactics of the trenches, while simultaneously evolving in response to the tactical imperatives thrown up by this new form of warfare. Paul Cornish, in this authoritative and carefully considered study, reconsiders the history automatic firepower, and he describes in vivid detail its development during the First World War.

Valour At Vimy Ridge

The Great Canadian Victory of World War I

Tom Douglas

The battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917 saw Canadian troops storm a 14-kilometer long escarpment that was believed to be impregnable. This was the first time in Canada’s history that a corps-sized formation fought together as a unit under its own leadership. Canadian troops persevered under heavy fire to take the ridge. The battle has since been much celebrated in Canada, as historians and descendants seek to explain the huge losses that military and political leaders accepted in a war that produced few gains for any nation. Tom Douglas recounts the events of this battle, and his narrative is accompanied by over 50 photos, drawings, and paintings by Canadian war artists.

Hermann Goering in the First World War

The Personal Photograph Albums of Hermann Goering

Blaine

When modern readers think of Hermann Goring, what probably comes to mind is the overweight drug addict and convicted war criminal who cheated the hangman’s noose at Nuremberg by committing suicide just hours before he was due to be hanged. Or the image of his powerful Luftwaffe in the Second World War bombing defenseless European cities and towns in the early part of the war. Or Goring the debauched art collector who pirated captured collections all over Nazi Europe during the Occupation years. All of these images are correct, but here we see another Hermann Goring: fighter pilot and combat ace of World War I, which he began as an infantry officer fighting the French Army in the 1914 Battle of the Frontiers.

The stories of men from English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh regiments who played and joked, sang and danced, swapped gifts and shared food and drink with the enemy before returning to war on the Western Front.

Winged Sabres

One of the RFC’s Most Decorated Squadrons

Robert

Winged Sabres is the story of a RFC & RAF squadron flying the cumbersome FE2 from February 1916 to September 1917, and then the superlative Bristol Fighter: a two-seater ‘fighterreconnaissance’ squadron with an astonishingly high success rate.

20 Squadron was possibly the highest scoring squadron of the war and one of the most highly decorated, claiming over 600 combat victories. Its members won seventy gallantry decorations including a posthumous Victoria Cross and included fliers from the U.K. and around the world.

Over 15 years research has gone into this book, covering a seldom-explored aspect of WW1 in the air: the two-seater fighter-reconnaissance squadrons.

Undarkened Skies

The American Aircraft Building Programme of the First World War

Paul R. Hare

Soon after entering the war in April 1917 American propaganda promised that she would ‘Darken the skies over Europe’ by sending over ‘the Greatest Aerial Armada ever seen.’ Encouraged by the French Government America promised to build no less than 22,000 airplanes within a year and to field, and to maintain, a force of 4,000 machines, all of the latest type, over the Western Front during 1918, not only to provide adequate air support for her own troops, but because she saw this as a way to use her industrial strength to bypass the squalor of the war in the trenches, and so bring an end to the stalemate of attrition into which the war had descended.

Jagdstaffel 356 The Story of a German Fighter Squadron

Although the author has given this Jagdstaffel a fictitious number and changed the names of the pilots composing it, the incidents related in this book have the genuine ring of truth and will be recognized as facts by anyone who has had experience of flying on the Western Front or who has studied it since. Many experts believe this work draws on the experience of the Bavarian Jasta 35, which flew against the British; however, whatever its real number may have been, Jagdstaffel 356 undoubtedly fought in the air over Flanders in 1918.This book is an exciting account, obviously written from firsthand experience, of the air war from the German side.

The book covers the main reasons why the major powers entered the conflict, the individual battles fought along the Western Front as well as in depth coverage of the war in the east of Europe. The War at sea is mapped in great detail, including the clashes at Dogger Bank and Jutland as well as the German submarine campaigns and the first major sea borne landing at Gallipoli.

The Human Face of D-Day Walking the Battlefields of Normandy: Essays, Reflections, and Conversations with Veterans of the Longest Day

Col Keith Nightingale (Ret)

Allies’

Pearl Harbor’s Revenge

How the Devastated U.S. Battleships

Returned to War

Rod MacDonald

Early on Sunday, 7 December 1941, Japanese carrier-borne aircraft launched a surprise attack at Pearl Harbor. Of the eight battleships attacked, all but Arizona were raised, temporarily patched-up and sent back to naval yards on the west coast of America for final repair and modernization. Six of the eight battleships would thus return to service, with improved protection against bombs and torpedoes and being fitted with the latest anti-aircraft and gunnery systems. They would re-enter to the war to wreak a terrible revenge – making their presence felt during the reconquest of the Aleutian Islands and the Philippines, and the great battles of Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. 01329A, $37.95 , $24.99 , Hardback, 352 pages

The Hitler I Knew The Memoirs of the Third Reich’s Press Chief

and

Hitler’s

Battle for the Ultimate Weapon

Norman Ridley

On 19 December 1938, Otto Hahn, conducted an experiment the results of which baffled him. It took his émigré collaborator Lise Meitner to explain that he had split an atom of uranium, which at the time seemed to defy all known laws of physics. When Neils Bohr took this news to the United States it became clear to scientists there that these results opened a completely new and, for some, horrifying possibility of energy production that could be used for both peaceful and military purposes. Following the German surrender there was still the problem of Japan, and the race continued to develop a working bomb to accelerate the end of the war. It was a race that the Unites States won. It was also a race that ushered in a new Cold War.

The Mafia at War Allied Collusion with the Mob

The Mafia at War is a provocative account of how a criminal organization exploited the grim realities of World War II to revive its fortunes and dominate global crime.

When Otto Dietrich was invited in 1933 to become Adolf Hitler’s press chief, he accepted with the simple, uncritical conviction that Adolf Hitler was a great man, dedicated to promoting peace and the welfare for the German people. At the end of the war, imprisoned and disillusioned, Dietrich sat down to write what he had seen and heard in twelve years of the closest association with Hitler, requesting that it be published after his death.Dietrich’s role placed him in a privileged position. He was hired by Hitler in 1933, and was a confidant until 1945, and he worked and clashed with Joseph Goebbels. His direct, personal experience of life at the heart in the Reich makes for compelling reading.

Operation Chariot

The St Nazaire Raid, 1942

Jean-Charles Stasi

In 1942, the Tirpitz, the heaviest battleship ever built by a European navy, was on the cusp of breaking out into the north Atlantic. The prospect of the huge German battleship patrolling the Atlantic posed a huge threat to the convoys that were the lifeline for an embattled Britain. Determined efforts were made to damage the ship through bombing raids: these failed. An altogether more daring and radical plan was conceived: destroy the drydock facility at St Nazaire, and without the use of the only suitable base for the ship, the threat would be neutralized. This volume in the Casemate Illustrated series gives a clear overview of the planning and execution of the raid and its aftermath.

Red Army Sniper

A Memoir on the Eastern Front in World War II

Yevgeni Nikolaev

Albrecht Wacker

Nikolaev is credited with a remarkable 324 kills and his wartime service included time in the siege of Leningrad in 1941/1942.

On several occasions, he discusses his Nazi counterparts as bandits and scum, and implores the reader to “take a look, fellows, at the beast of a bastard I’ve laid low”.

In addition to describing details of his kills, Nikolaev explains how his life was saved when an explosive rifle bullet struck a watch that he kept in his jacket pocket. His life was saved by a surgeon who extracted all the watch parts.

Japan Runs Wild, 1942–1943

Peter Harmsen

Fast forward to the end of 1943, and the tables had been turned entirely. A reinvigorated American-led military machine had kicked into gear, and the Japanese were fighting a defensive battle along a frontline that crossed thousands of miles of land and ocean. Japan Runs Wild, 1942-1943 details the astonishing transformation that took place in that period.

Asian Armageddon, 1944–45

Peter Harmsen

The last installment of the War in the Far East trilogy, Asian Armageddon 1944-45, describes how a US-led coalition of nations battled Japan into submission through a series of cataclysmic encounters. Leyte Gulf, the biggest naval battle ever, was testimony to the paramount importance of controlling the ocean, as was the fact that the US Navy carried out the only successful submarine campaign in history, reducing Japan’s military and merchant navies to shadows of the former selves. Meanwhile, fighting continued in disparate geographic conditions on land, with the chaos of Imphal, the inferno of Manila, and the carnage of Iwo Jima forming some of the milestones on the bloody road to peace.

Operation Höss

The Deportation of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz, May–July

1944

Ian Baxter

Operation Höss or Aktion

Höss was the codename for the mass deportation of Hungarian Jews and their murder in the gas chambers of Birkenau extermination camp. Between 14 May and 9 July 1944, 420,000 Jews were sent to Auschwitz from Hungary, or about 12,000 per day. On arrival some twenty-five percent were selected for forced labor while the remainder were immediately gassed. The name of this atrocity came from Rudolf Höss, who returned as the commandant of Auschwitz to increase the killing capacity and ensure the smooth running of the operation. This shocking book tells the story of this inhuman venture from its conception and planning, and through to the bitter, tragic end.

Battle of Peleliu, 1944 Three Days That Turned into Three Months

Jim Moran

Peleliu’s garrison amounted to more than 10,000 men. Consequently, when the US preliminary bombardment began on 12 September 1944, it was devastating. Such was the scale of the destruction that the commander of the 1st Marine Division, Major General William H. Rupertus, told his men: ‘We’re going to have some casualties, but let me assure you this is going to be a fast one, rough but fast. We’ll be through in three days – it may only take two.’ Despite Major General Rupertus’ prediction, it was not until after two months, one week and five days of appalling fighting, and a final, futile last sacrificial charge by the remaining enemy troops, that the Battle of Peleliu came to an end.

Ian Baxter

Drawing on a superb collection of rare and often unpublished photographs, this fine Images of War book describes the fighting history of each formation, notably the 1944 battle of Narva, which was known as the battle of the European SS. As its forces were pushed further back across a scarred and burning wasteland it describes how these Dutch, Belgian and Danish units became cut off in the Kurland Pocket until some were evacuated by sea. The remainder were killed or captured in front of Berlin in April 1945.

Schnellbootwaffe

Adolf Hitler’s Guerrilla War at Sea: S-Boote

1939-45

Hrvoje Spaji?

The Schnellbootwaffe was created in the early 1930s. After the first series of Schnellboote were launched, constantly improved versions of these vessels would follow.

The Schnellbootwaffe would achieve significant victories for the Kriegsmarine at the beginning of the war by using these vessels in high-level strategies, including a style of guerrilla warfare. Allied air bombardment of German torpedo boat bases from 1944 onwards failed to destroy the offensive potential of the Schnellboote and their crews. The Allied disaster at Lyme Bay at the end of April 1944 shows how this guerrilla war at sea was still dangerous, even at this stage of the war.

Hitler’s Death Camps in Occupied Poland

Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives

Ian Baxter

Nearly 80 years on, the concept and scale of the Nazis’ genocide program remains an indelible, nay almost unbelievable, stain on the human race. Yet it was a dreadful reality of which, as this graphic book demonstrates, all too much proof exists. Between 1941 and 1945 an estimated three and a half million Jews and an unknown number of others, including Soviet POWs and gypsies, perished in six camps built in Poland; Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdenak, Sobibor and Treblinka. Unpleasant as it may be, it does no harm for present generations to be reminded of man’s inhumanity to man, if only to ensure such atrocities will never be repeated.

The Americans from the Ardennes to VE Day

Brooke

Launched in December 1944, the Nazis’ Ardennes offensive, known as the Battle of the Bulge, was one of the most dangerous periods of the War. During six weeks of desperate fighting, more US soldiers were killed, wounded or reported missing than in any battle in American history.

The Rhine was crossed in March 1945, Berlin fell to the Russians in early May, and the Allies met up on the River Elbe. In the chaos that followed, Germany was divided into four zones of occupation. The immediate tasks were ensuring the survival of the civilian population, establishing law and order, and the capture of war criminals.

They faced the US Tenth Army, comprising the US Army XXIV Corps and the US Marines’ III Amphibious Corps. The Fall of Berlin

Ian Baxter

By March 1945, the Red Army had closed in on Berlin. Marshal Zhukov, with almost a million soldiers and 20,000 tanks and guns at his disposal, launched his assault of the Seelow Heights. While costly with 30,000 Russians killed, it brought the Russian Army to the gates of the capital. On 20 April, Hitler’s 56th birthday, Soviet artillery began a massive bombardment of the doomed city. The Fuhrer ordered every soldier, Hitlerjugend and Volksstrum to fight to the death. The house-to-house fighting that followed was brutal and savage with heavy casualties for both military and civilians.

M36/M36B1 Tank Destroyer

David Doyle

Going into WWII, the prevailing strategy of the US command was that tanks were not to be used to engage enemy tanks in combat. Enemy tanks were to be dealt with by specialized weapons, aptly named tank destroyers. The M36B1 was built from the ground-up as a tank destroyer, using a hull based on that of the M4A3 but featuring a standard M36 turret. Examination of rare surviving vehicles indicates that the M36B1 hulls were manufactured expressly for this purpose and were not merely M4A3 hulls that were converted. While US antitank doctrine changed, rendering all the tank destroyers obsolete post WWII, many of these vehicles were supplied to other nations, and in fact some survived as combat vehicles into the 21st century.

Fallschirmjäger Volume 1 - German Paratroopers, 1937–1941

Fran?ois Cochet

As elite troops, the German Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers) were regularly engaged in front line combat during the Second World War. Their famed actions such as the fighting in Scandinavia, the taking of the Belgian fortress Eden-Emal in May 1940, and the Battle for Crete, have given them the reputation of being determined, courageous and loyal soldiers. This book covers the early years of the Fallschirmstruppen (paratroop units) before the beginning of the war, until the height of their successes in 1941, after which the Fallschirmjäger were more often deployed in a more ‘traditional’ way, even though high-risk actions (such as at Monte Cassino, the Gran Sasso Raid) allowed them to reconnect once more with their glorious past.

A Photographic History of Amphibious Warfare 1939-1945

Simon Forty

Jonathan Forty

Amphibious operations have always been an important element of warfare, but they reached their climax during the Second World War when they were carried out on a large scale in every theater of the conflict. That is why this wide-ranging, highly illustrated history of amphibious warfare 1939–1945 by Simon and Jonathan Forty is of such value. Their book gives graphic accounts of the main amphibious assaults launched by the major combatants, in particular the British, American, German and Japanese – not just large-scale landings like those in North Africa, Normandy, the Philippines and Okinawa, but also raids such as Dieppe and St Nazaire and evacuations like Dunkirk and Kerch.

One of the major lessons of World War II was the importance of coastal waters. It was not widely recognized beforehand just how vital the control of such waters would become, both in defending essential convoys as well as attacking those of the enemy, and in paving the way for amphibious landings. While landbased aircraft could carry out offshore operations by day and destroyers and cruisers patrolled deeper waters, the ideal craft for use in coastal waters were motor boats armed with torpedoes and light guns. The E-boat Threat describes the development of these deadly little craft, the training of their crews who were usually volunteers and the gradual evolution of tactics in the light of wartime experience.

August 1944

Arthur W. Gullachsen

Verrières Ridge was seen as a key stepping-stone for the British Second Army. Imposing in height and containing perfect terrain, the Germans viewed it as the lynchpin to their defenses south of the city of Caen and east of the Orne river. In the second volume of this two-volume work, the fighting of 23 July–3 August is chronicled in detail, specifically the premier Anglo-Canadian operation to capture Verrières Ridge..

Black Sunday When Weather Claimed the US Fifth Air Force

Any USAAF pilot who flew the mission to Hollandia on the fateful afternoon of 16 April 1944 in New Guinea would remember it for the rest of their lives. So would anyone else in the theater, for the weather-related losses that fateful day earned it the eternal epithet “Black Sunday”. The way home for more than three hundred bombers and fighters was blocked by a towering weather front whose thunderstorms rose well above any altitude they could reach. Over enemy territory and caught between mountains and the sea, there was no option but to confront nature. By dusk that evening 37 aircraft were missing or had been destroyed.. 246988, $44.95 , $29.50 , Paperback, 136 pages

Black Space

The Nazi Superweapons That Launched Humanity Into Orbit

David Axe

Orbital fortresses poised to fry entire cities with no warning using giant mirrors. Bombers that take off from Earth, punch through the thin border between the atmosphere and vacuum and take advantage of that lofty altitude to speed across the globe on missions of mass destruction. These and other exotic orbital weapons were under consideration, or even active development, in the early decades of humanity’s push into space. And no wonder. The era of frantic, dueling, American and Soviet space-exploration efforts -- which stretched from the end of World War II to the United States’ successful Moon landing in July 1969 -- had its roots in Nazi Germany, a country that pinned its hope for global conquest on equally ambitious superweapons.

Panzers in Normandy Then and Now

Eric

A detailed study of the German panzer regiments in Normandy in 1944 as seen from the German side. Divided into two parts: the theoretical composition of the 1944 model of the panzer regiment, its equipment and personnel, and individual chapters on the 17 panzer units which saw service in Normandy. The book contrasts the scenes of the fighting that raged in the countryside and villages of this part of France with comparison photographs of the battleground as it is today. Research for this book also resulted in the discovery of the location of the grave of the most famous panzer commander, formerly listed as missing in action, when a Normandy roadside revealed its secret in 1983 as the last resting place of the victor of Villers-Bocage, Michael Wittmann.

Eagles over Darwin American Airmen Defending Northern Australia in 1942

Dr Tom Lewis OAM

In 1942, the air defense of the northern Australian frontier town Darwin was operated by airmen from the United States. That year was very nearly the end of Australia as a country. To those men the present nation owes a debt. A massive Japanese attack on Darwin on 19 February had left the town and its air base in ruins. An understrength squadron of USAAC P-40E Warhawks fought a gallant defense but was all but wiped out. Northern Australia was now at the mercy of Imperial Japanese Navy Betty bombers and Zero fighters whose crews were both skilled and experienced. However, help was on the way.

The Allied Assault on Hitler’s Channel Island Fortress

The Planned Operation to Eject the Germans in 1943

John Grehan

Incredible as it may seem today, detailed plans were drawn up to recapture the Channel Islands, the most heavily fortified of all the German-occupied territories, regardless of the potentially ‘severe’ loss of life and the widespread destruction to the property of the British citizens. There was much then in favor of mounting the operations against the Channel Islands regardless of the fact that it meant the death of untold British citizens at the hands of British troops and the Allied air forces. The Allied Assault Upon Hitler’s Channel Island Fortress is, therefore, the first detailed analysis of what would have been the most controversial operation ever undertaken by the British and American armed forces.

The SAS in Occupied France

2 SAS Operations, June to October 1944

Gavin Mortimer

In the world of military history there is no brand as potent as that of the SAS. They burst into global prominence in 1980 with their spectacular storming of the Iranian Embassy, and there have been hundreds of books, films, documentaries and even reality TV shows about them. But what there hasn’t been is a guide to the scenes of some of their most famous Second World War operations. That is why Gavin Mortimer’s vivid two-volume account of their daring missions in Germanoccupied France in 1944 is such compelling reading. In this second volume focusing on 2 SAS he describes in graphic detail operations Loyton, Wallace and Hardy, and Rupert, all of which were carried out in eastern France.

Battle for Sicily Stepping Stone to Victory

Ian Blackwell

On the night of 9-10 July 1943, an Allied armada launched the invasion of Sicily, a larger operation than the Normandy landings the following year. Over the next thirty-eight days, half a million Allied servicemen fought the Germans and Italians for control of the island, which became the first part of Axis homeland to fall during World War II. Despite their success, inter-Allied and inter-service divisions and rivalries robbed them of the opportunity to inflict a crushing defeat on the Germans and Italians, who were able to conduct a fighting withdrawal and save sizable forces. Regarded by some as a blind alley, by others as the way into Europe via the soft underbelly, the decision to invade Sicily was and remains controversial.

Churchill’s Desert Rats in North Africa, Burma, Sicily and Italy

7th Armoured Division’s Campaigns, 1940–1943

Patrick Delaforce

This well researched and well written book covers the early campaigns and battles that earned The Desert Rats their fame and name. This volume covers the difficult early years when ultimate victory was less than certain. The Nazis were victorious on many fronts and Britain stood alone. Indeed it was at El Alamein that 7 armored Division and the rest of Montgomerys Eighth Army turned the tide. The successful completion of the North African campaign led to the invasion of Sicily and the long slog up Italy. The Divisions story is told by many first hand contributions and is the result of painstaking research by the author who was also a Desert Rat.

Invasion Scare 1940

In the Summer of 1940, after evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk and the Franco/German armistice which followed the fall of France, Britain stood alone against the armed might of Hitler’s Germany, supported only by the forced of her dominions and inspired by little but the rhetoric of her newly-appointed Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. Michael Glover’s penetrating analysis of the mood of British people that summer, of the German ability to mount an amphibious invasion at the time and of Britain’s ability to repel such an invasion shows how ill-founded the scare was, while explaining how well it served the British cause.

Sex Under the Swastika Erotica, Scandal and the Occult in Hitler’s Third Reich

Tim

Sex under the Swastika is a journey through the dark secretive corridors of the Third Reich’s powerbase and it’s near-pathological sexual obsession with young women, sex, Satanism and the occult. Based on interviews, eyewitness accounts and using newly revealed material from the sons and daughters of former SS officers who were part of Adolf Hitler and Reinhard Heydrich’s personal staff, we learn about the sexual conduct, affairs, scandals and fetishes of some of Hitler’s most trusted advocates. An unapologetically provocative volume, it is an exploration of the Third Reich’s darkest secrets, which left blood on the crisp white sheets of a nation and caused many to remain silent for decades after the death of National Socialist Germany.

Blind Obedience and Denial

The Nuremberg

Defendants

Andrew

A revealing yet accessible examination of the Nuremberg trial, and all 23 men who stood accused. This account sets the scene by explaining the procedures, the legal context, and the moments of hypocrisy in the Allies’ prosecution—ignoring the fact that the Katy? massacre was a Soviet crime and overlooking carpet bombing. This new study utilizes not only the trial manuscripts, but the pre-trial interrogations, the views of the psychiatrists and psychologists, and the often-overheard conversations between prisoners—who did not know their guards spoke German—to give the fullest exploration of the defendants, their state of mind, and their attitudes towards the Third Reich, Hitler and each other as they faced judgement by the victors of the war.

Lucky Hitler’s Big Mistakes

Paul Ballard-Whyte

Adolf Hitler’s Great War military experiences in no way qualified him for supreme command. Yet by July 1940, under his personal leadership the Third Reich’s armed forces had defeated Poland, Czechoslovakia, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium and France. The invasion of Great Britain was a distinct reality following Dunkirk. Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania had become allies along with the acquiescent military powers of Mussolini’s Italy and Franco’s Spain. These achievements prompted Field Marshal Willem Keitel, the Wehrmacht’s Chief of Staff, to pronounce Hitler to be ‘the Greatest Commander of all time’. Lucky: Hitler’s Big Mistakes exposes the enigmatic Dictator for what he really was – incredibly lucky and militarily incompetent.

One of the most remarkable episodes of the Second World War was the German attempt to forge currency and trigger the economic collapse of the Allies. In this extraordinary memoir, the sole surviving Czech counterfeiter, Adolf Burger, describes his wartime experiences. He was working as a counterfeiter until his liberation from a concentration camp at Ebensee on 5 May 1945. Supported by hitherto unseen documentation and photographs that Burger took of his fellow prisoners after the war, this is a shocking account which sheds fresh light on the calculated barbarity of the Nazi war machine.

Women Interned in World War Two Sumatra

Faith, Hope and Survival

Barbara Coombes

Thousands of women and children were among those who struggled to leave Singapore just before capitulation on February 15, 1942; their hope was to reach safety. For many that hope was never realized; countless numbers drowned as ships were bombed and sunk on their way to “safety”. The “lucky” ones who survived the onslaught of the ships would become guests of the Japanese; many of these would not live to see the end of the war. This true account, using personal diaries and family documents traces Margaret Dryburgh and Shelagh Brown’s journey from childhood through to adulthood and internment. Early life shapes adult life and perhaps contributed to their response to captivity which showed courage, tenacity, and perseverance.

Black Tulip

The Life and Myth of Erich Hartmann, the World’s Top Fighter Ace

Black Tulip is the dramatic story of history’s top fighter ace, Luftwaffe pilot Erich Hartmann. It’s also the story of how his service under Hitler was simplified and elevated to Western mythology during the Cold War. Black Tulip locates the ambiguous truth about Hartmann and so much of the German Wehrmacht in general: that many of these men were neither full-blown Nazis nor impeccable knights. They were complex, contradictory, and elusive. This book portrays a complex human rather than the heroic caricature we’re used to, and it argues that the tidy, polished hero stories we’ve inherited about men like Hartmann say as much about those who’ve crafted them as they do about the heroes themselves.

Luftwaffe Over America The Secret Plans to Bomb the United States in World War II

Manfred Griehl

This thought-provoking book examines the Nazi German plans to raid and bomb New York and the eastern seaboard in the event of a successful invasion of the Soviet Union. The plans rested upon the use of transoceanic aircraft, such as the six-engined Ju 390, Me 264 or Ta 400. The Third Reich was unable to produce these machines in sufficient numbers, however, if the Soviet Union had been conquered, these plans would have become a reality. This fascinating, thoroughly researched study offers valuable insights into how Germany developed new weapons and shows why the attempts to develop long range bombers were frustrated until they were terminated by the end of hostilities. Includes more than a hundred rarely seen photographs and original plans.

In August 1943, a highly classified US Army Air Force unit, code-named the “Wright Project,” departed Langley Field for Guadalcanal in the South Pacific to join the fight against the Empire of Japan. Operating independently, under sealed orders drafted at the highest levels of Army Air Force, the Wright Project was unique. The Wright airmen would fly only at night, usually as lone hunters of enemy ships. In so doing they would pave the way for the United States to enter and dominate a new dimension of war in the air for generations to come. Comprehensive and highly personal, this story can now be revealed for the very first time, based on official sources, and interviews with the young men who flew into the night.

The Origins of Surfaceto-Air Guided Missile Technology

German Flak Rockets and the Onset of the Cold War

James Mills

World War II saw the conception of the first surfaceto-air guided missile systems, technology pioneered by German scientists. The history of the transfer of German SAM technology to the Allies after 1945 has previously been overshadowed by the well-published transfers of the V-1 and V-2 guided missiles. This book presents the first complete history of Germany’s wartime development of surface-to-air missile (SAM) technology, how the Allies acquired this secret research, and how they then exploited this knowledge.

Ian Fleming and Operation Golden Eye Keeping Spain out of World War II

Mark Simmons

This book tells the story of the various Allied operations and schemes instigated to keep Spain and Portugal out of WWII, which included the widespread bribery of high ranking Spanish officials and the duplicity of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr. Ian Fleming and Alan Hillgarth were the architects of Operation Golden Eye, the sabotage and disruption scheme that would be put in place had Germany invaded Spain. Fleming visited the Iberian Peninsula and Tangiers several times during the war, arguably the closest he came to being a real secret agent. It was these visits which supplied much of the background material for his fictionFleming even called his home on Jamaica where he created 007 ‘Goldeneye.’

The Venlo Sting MI6’s Deadly Fiasco

Norman Ridley

On 9 November 1939, two unsuspecting British agents of the Special Intelligence Services walked into a trap set by German Spymaster Reinhard Heydrich. Believing that they were meeting a dissident German general for talks about helping German military opposition to bring down Hitler and end the war, they were instead taken captive in the Dutch village of Venlo and whisked away to Germany for interrogation by the Gestapo. The incident was a huge embarrassment for the Dutch government and provided the Germans with significant intelligence about SIS operations throughout Europe.

Hitler’s Nest of Vipers The Rise Of The Abwehr

Nigel West

Modern historians have consistently condemned the Abwehr, Germany’s military intelligence service, and its SS equivalent, the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), as incompetent and even corrupt organizations. However, newly declassified MI5, CIA and US Counterintelligence Corps files shed a very different light on the structure, control and capabilities of the German intelligence machine in Europe, South America, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. For the first time, the Abwehr’s development and the true extent of its operations have been laid bare, through official files and even of restored documents previously redacted.

The Allied Air Campaign Against Hitler’s U-boats Victory in the Battle of the Atlantic

Timothy S Good

No weapon platform sank more U-boats in the Second World War than the Allied aircraft. Whether it was an American ’plane operating from American escort carriers, US aircraft from Royal Air Force bases, or British aircraft from bases throughout the world, these officers and men became the most decisive factor in turning the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic against the German submarine threat. While the German crews could threaten escort vessels with torpedoes, or avoid them by remaining submerged, their leaders never developed an effective strategy against aircraft. his is the most comprehensive study ever undertaken of this most crucial battle which helped turn the Battle of the Atlantic irrevocably in favor of the Allies.

The Experimental Units of Hitler’s Condor Legion

German Aircraft In Action During the Spanish Civil War

Rafael

Lucas

At the start of the Spanish Civil War the nationalists sought help for their cause from Germany, following which volunteers from the German Air Force and Army formed what was called the Condor Legion. This force made a significant contribution to General Franco’s eventual victory and this included two experimental air units, known as VJ/88 and VB/88. The former’s mission was to combat test the new monoplane fighters; the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Heinkel He 112. The latter group’s task was to test the new twin-engine, retractable undercarriage bombers; the Heinkel He 111, the fast Dornier Do 17 and the Junkers Ju 86. This book aims to examine the history of the men and machines that served in those units.

Luftwaffe Training Aircraft

The Training of Germany’s Pilots and Aircrew Through Rare Archive Photographs

Chris Goss

The often unseen and unrecognized element in aerial warfare, is that of training the pilots and crews, yet its value is beyond calculation. In this role, a wide variety of aircraft were used by the Luftwaffe, with trainee pilots progressing from simpler, older machines, such as the Klemm 35, the FockeWulf Fw 44 and the Bücker 131, to the more sophisticated Arado Ar 66, the Gotha Go 145 and the Arado Ar 76, as well as heavier aircraft like the Junkers W33 and W44. Gradually they would be introduced to newer and faster models that enabled them to experience, to some degree, the type of aircraft they would be flying in combat.

Les Forces Blindes Hongroises Durant la Second Guerre mondiale

Eduardo Manuel Gil Martínez

Text in French: The actions of Germany’s armor during World War II are well documented and thus well known. Those of Germany’s Axis allies are rather less so. Hungarian Armor in the Second World War gives an account the role of the Hungarian armored forces which, over the course of the world conflict, managed to constitute an armored corps powerful enough to exercise a decisive role on the front although it was destined to face one of the most terrible adversaries of its time, the Russian Red Army. This book also describes the terrible fate experienced by the Hungarian armored troops after the Soviet invasion of Hungary, many of whose soldiers and officers were sent to Soviet concentration camps for several years.

This followed many weeks of minor engagements, each side taking positions from the other. L’Epuration Sauvage en Normandie 1943-1946

Yves Lecouturier

Text in French: The Savage Purification of Normandy is an account of retribution against enemy collaborators that took place between 1943 and 1946 and was a microcosm of the legally sanctioned reprisals that took place after the war between 1944 and 1947—some 39 people were condemned to death by firing squad in legal proceedings. But as early as 1943 some resistance fighters couldn’t wait for the restoration of the French Republic and began to eliminate collaborators they considered a threat. Outside of any legal framework and often with a fake judgments, extra-judicial executions and retribution were carried out quickly and violently, including the practice of shaving the heads of women collaborators to mark them out amongst their peers.

Normandie Niemen Quinze destins de Pilotes

François Robinard

Text in French: They came from all over France, from all walks of life, some even from France’s shattered colonial empire. They did not share the same culture or the same beliefs. Corporals, non-commissioned officers and officers; they were of all ranks but all, without exception, volunteered. They did not seem destined to become friends, and yet they did become so even though they had not all followed the same path, but they all had the same goal: the restoration of the honor, of the past splendor, of their homeland. These 96 heroes are now history. François Robinard has collected the memories of five of them, saved by history, mainly those of General Risso. They form the basis of this book.

Des Ailes dans les Jambes

Les Mémoires de Guerre d’André Courval

Christian Kermoal

Text in French: Three escapes, two crashes, wounds, a desertion, a flight of some 4,350 miles across Africa to fight again: André Courval’s war in the Free French Forces was a perpetual adventure. Telling the story himself, the six years of war in his Memoirs constitute a rare eye-witness account by an NCO of the Free French Forces who served in one of the less well known arms: the bombers. Preceded by a section relating his apprenticeship and military service, the occupation, his flight via Jersey, his arrival in England and his joining the Free French Air Force, are particularly well documented. André Courval’s war in Saharan Africa was linked to the Leclerc’s epic (Koufra, Fezzan, Libya, etc.). The two men met on several occasions.

1944 Face aux débarquements alliés en Italie et en Provence

Henceforth, they had to protect “Fortress Europe” against the Allied landings to come. Five submarines went out against the Allied landings in Sicily in July 1943 but could not prevent them. In the Toulon and Pola arsenals, a new double rear platform on the conning tower was added to the submarines to increase their AA armament with eight 20-mm cannon. In September 1943, six experienced captains set out to try and stop the landings at Salerno and there were successes.

This is a complete account of this event.

Text in French: November 11, 1918. The unfinished victory… France believes it has won the war, but it has only won a precarious peace. This observation is the starting point which will inexorably lead the country towards the end of June 1940. When on May 10, 1940, Germany kicked off operations

in the west, the French army would accumulate blunders, amplifying German successes in spite of itself. From the most obvious to the most unsuspected, this book proposes to analyze point by point the causes of this inexorable defeat.

Sur Les Traces De L’Armee Allemande Grenoble Et Le Vercors, 1940-1944

Michel Lallemant

Text in French: The aim of this book is to reconstruct the image of the German troops present in the Grenoble region in 1940 at the end of the campaign for France, but above all in 1943/44 following the Italian capitulation and during the operations against the Maquis forces in the Vercors region, until the end of summer 1944. Using soldiers’ personnel documents, German and French archives but also period objects, an attempt is made to reconstruct a part of that reality, going back on the chronology of the events, following the routes taken by the units engaged, the way they were made up, their officers, the soldiers themselves and especially their losses, and where all this happened within the context of the actions carried out in the area.

Text in French: When on 10 May 1940 Germany launched its operations in the West, the French Army piled on the mistakes, magnifying the German success in spite of herself. Caught in the whirlwind of the lightning German breakthrough, her command didn’t have the opportunity at any moment to alter the course of events and the calamitous disasters followed each other like a Greek tragedy. This book analyses the causes of this inexorable defeat, from the most obvious to the least evident, point by point.

Gold Beach de Vers sur mer à Arromanches, 6 Jun 1944

Jean-Charles Stasi

Philippe Bauduin

Text in French: Of D-Day, everybody remembers the American paratroopers dropping over Sainte-MèreEglise, the bloodbath at Omaha Beach, the heroic capture of the Point du Hoc. What everybody forgets was that in the middle of this front, there was Gold Beach, where the Allied offensive turned out to be particularly effective, so much so that by the evening of 6 June the 25,000 British soldiers who set foot on the beaches at Asnelles and Ver-sur-mer had reached their objectives, in particular the control of the Caen-Bayeux road and liberated Bayeux the next day. This richly illustrated book reminds you of what was at stake in this sector of D-Day, and tells the story of what happened there, nearest the participants.

Sainte-Mere-Eglise & Mederet Zone d’operations aeroportees

americaines du jour j

Helmut Konrad von Keusgen

Text in French: After his books about the Pointe du Hoc, WN 62 and recently Pegasus Bridge and the Melville Battery, von Keusgen gives us here a lively chronological account of the airborne attacks carried out by the legendary 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions in the first hours of the Battle of Normandy. Not only is the text accompanied by American eyewitness accounts of the very bitter fighting around Sainte-Mère-Eglise, the flooded zones and the Merderet Bridges, but also by the accounts of Manche civilians and – von Keusgen’s principal contribution – those of German veterans, too. Without any doubt, this book will motivate those interested in paratroopers and the fighting in the Cotentin Peninsula.

Héros de carentan

Denis Van Den Brink

Text in French: The liberation of Carentan is not well-known even though it wasn’t just an anecdote in the Battle of Normandy. It was in fact the object of ferocious fighting from 9 to 13 June 1944 with two elite units confronting each other: the American paratroopers from the 101st Airborne and the Fallschirmjäger of the FJR 6. This book modestly gathers together some of these individual adventures, throwing a profoundly human light on the complexity and the violence of the fighting for the liberation of this region in the Cotentin Peninsula. An obvious must-have for all Battle of Normandy buffs, or for readers sensitive to the human aspects of the war.

De Nuages Et De Feu

Guerre Aérienne sur les Ardennes d’Anvers à

Boddenplatte

Philippe Guillemot

Text in French: On 16 December 1944, there started the most powerful artillery barrage that the forces of the Third Reich in its death throes were ever to launch on the Western Front after the Normandy landings six months earlier. It smothered the American lines holding the thinned-out front in the Ardennes. The most powerful armored force ever assembled by the Germans for an offensive on this front was then to have struck out in the direction of Antwerp. All this was under low cloud cover, sheltering the 6th and 5th Armoured Armies’ precious panzers from the all-powerful Allied air forces.

Villers-Bocage

Au cœur de la bataille

Frédéric Deprun

Yann Jouault

Text in French: Villers-Bocage is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic events of the Battle of Normandy. Many historians have recounted the highly documented events of June 13, 1944, notably the destruction of a British armored column by Obersturmführer Tiger Michael Wittmann. Although one might think nothing more could be said, the veil of fog of this war still hangs heavy in 2014, and the battle continues to reveal more secrets! This is a thorough and extremely detailed analysis of the battles that took place on that fateful day. Such a thorough examination of the battle has now been made possible thanks to the testimonies and unpublished photographs that have surfaced over the last ten years.

Vietnam Combat Firefights and Writing History

Robin Bartlett

It was the worst of times to be a platoon leader in Vietnam, and it was with extreme anxiety that Bartlett made his way to join his battalion and company. Bartlett’s platoon could deploy through helicopter combat assaults into hot LZs at a moment’s notice if an enemy force had been spotted. And they did. Bartlett also had to cope with personal issues of commitment, to a war that was rapidly losing support, not only back home, but among the soldiers he was leading through the jungles of I Corps on “search and destroy” missions. Fifty years later, Bartlett’s vivid combat experiences are brought to light in a fast-moving, well-written, first-person narrative expressing the horror, fear, anguish, and sometimes illogical humor of that war.

Battle for Skyline Ridge

The CIA Secret War in Laos

James E. Parker Jr

In late ‘71, the People’s Army of Vietnam launched Campaign “Z” into northern Laos with the aim of defeating the last Royal Lao Army troops. Despite the odds being overwhelmingly in the NVA’s favor, the battle did not go to plan. It raged for more than 100 days, the longest in the Vietnam War, and it all came down to Skyline Ridge. As at Dien Bien Phu, whoever won Skyline, won Laos. Against all odds, against all WDC expectations, the NVA lost, their 27,000-man invasion force decimated. James Parker served in Laos. Over many years he pieced together his own knowledge with CIA files and North Vietnamese after-action reports in order to tell the full story of the battle of Skyline Ridge.

U.S. Forces in Vietnam: 1962-1967

Guillaume

This publication covers the chronological evolution of uniforms, equipment and weaponry issued to the American soldier during the first years of the conflict, from 1962 to 1967. All of the uniforms and equipment shown are period, however some of the weapons are replicas. In the aim of depicting characteristic servicemen at given periods, a great deal of research was undertaken in order to guarantee coherence between the units, dates and geographical situations. Differing from other publications, the author has deliberately chosen to illustrate all types of service personnel rather than solely combatants in order to give an exact presentation of the American military during this period.

A History of Jungle Warfare

From the Earliest Days to the Battlefields of Vietnam

Bryan Perrett

General Sir Walter Walker KCB, CBE, DSO

A world where little light penetrates. Of dense vegetation, tangled roots, fetid mud and swamps. Where the helicopter, sophisticated weaponry and technology have revolutionized military combat. But where survival still depends on acute observation and listening for the slightest sound. The jungle. Backdrop to one of the most gruelling of all forms of warfare. To wars that in recent times have changed the course of history. The subject of this expert, extensively illustrated study by Bryan Perrett. Originally published to acclaim in 1990 by Patrick Stephens Limited, this re-issue represents a determination on the publisher’s part to keep this esteemed volume in print.

On the Frontlines of the Television War A Legendary War Cameraman in Vietnam

Yasutsune “Tony” Hirashiki

Terry Irving

This is the story of Yasutsune “Tony” Hirashiki’s ten years in Vietnam—beginning when he arrived in 1966 as a young freelancer with a 16mm camera but without a job or the slightest grasp of English and ending in the hectic fall of Saigon in 1975 when he was literally thrown on one of the last flights out. His memoir has all the exciting tales of peril, hardship, and close calls but it is primarily a story of very real and yet remarkable people: the soldiers who fought, bled, and died, and the reporters and photographers who went right to the frontlines to record their stories and memorialize their sacrifice.

Da Nang Diary A Forward Air Controller’s Gunsight View of Flying with SOG

Col. Thomas R Yarborough

Originally published in 1991, this classic work has now been revised and updated with additional photos, many of them in color. It is the story of how, in Vietnam, an elite group of Air Force pilots fought a secret air war in Cessna 0-2 and OV-10 Bronco prop planes—flying as low as they could get. The eyes and ears of the fast-moving jets who rained death and destruction down on enemy positions, the Forward Air Controller made an art form out of an air strike—knowing the targets, knowing where friendly troops were, and reacting with split-second, life and death decisions as a battle unfolded.

White Water Red Hot Lead On Board U.S. Navy Swift Boats in Vietnam

Dan Daly

During the Vietnam war 3500 officers and men served in the Swift Boat program in a fleet of 130 boats with no armor plating. The boats patrolled the coast and rivers of South Vietnam, with the average age of the crew being twenty-four. Their days consisted of deadly combat, intense lightning firefights, storms and many hidden dangers. The six man crew of PCF 76 were volunteers from all over the United States, eager to serve their country in a unique type of duty not seen since the PT boats of WWII. This inexperienced and disparate group of men would meld into a combat team - a team that formed an unbreakable, lifelong bond.

In the Mind of Stalin

James Greensmith

On 1 October 1939, Winston

Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty and soon to be the UK’s wartime leader, described Russia as ‘a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’. The same can certainly be said of Stalin. How can this paradox of a man, who on the one hand had once exhibited great tenderness and kindness to his daughter Svetlana, and on the other sent millions – including members of his own family - to their deaths, be explained? However, this is only part of the story of the amount of misery inflicted by the Stalin regime through torture, deliberate starvation, neglect, separation from loved ones, cold and hypothermia (e.g. in the prisons of Siberia), which is unquantifiable and unimaginable.

Surviving the Holocaust and Stalin

The Amazing Story of the Seiler Family

Vanessa

The horrors of Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and labor camps were just the beginning of the struggle to survive for the Seiler family. As Hungarian Jews, they faced persecution of the very worst kind both from their own government and Nazi Germany. After liberation by the Soviets at the end of WWII they endured further punishment from the Stalinist regime concealed behind the Iron Curtain. This memoir is drawn from a recently re-discovered cache of precious family letters and exclusive interviews with Marta Seiler, who translated those letters for the first time. Marta has supplemented the account with childhood memories and original photos.

Valkyrie: The North American XB-70

The USA’s Ill-fated Supersonic Heavy Bomber

Graham M. Simons

During the 1950s, at the time Elvis Presley was rocking the world with Hound Dog and the USA was aiming to become the world’s only superpower, plans were being drawn at North American Aviation in Southern California for an incredible Mach-3 strategic bomber. The concept was born as a result of General Curtis LeMay’s desire for a heavy bomber with the weapon load and range of the subsonic B-52 and a top speed in excess of the supersonic medium bomber, the B-58 Hustler. If LeMay’s plans came to fruition there would be 250 Valkyries in the air; it would be the pinnacle of his quest for the ultimate strategic bomber operated by America’s Strategic Air Command.

Colin Turbett

Between the closing battles of the Second World War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Cold War cast a shadow over the lives of people throughout the world. Soviet Air Power of the Cold War

Michael

At the peak of the Cold War in the 1950s the Soviet Union possessed some 12,000 aircraft, making it the largest air force of all the protagonists. By the 1990s this had declined to around 8,000, the reduction largely reflecting the increase in aircraft capability. As well as fighters and bombers, the Soviet inventory included trainers, transports, seaplanes, electronic warfare and ground attack aircraft, as well as an impressive helicopter fleet, notably the Mi-24 ‘Hind’ gunship and the massive Homer transport. All these aircraft and many more are authoritatively described and vividly illustrated in this comprehensive work.

Soviet Cold War Weaponry: Aircraft, Warships and Missiles

Anthony Tucker-Jones

In this companion volume to his photographic history of Soviet tanks and armored vehicles, Anthony Tucker-Jones provides a visual guide to the vast array of aircraft, warships and missiles the Soviet armed forces deployed at the height of the Cold War. The so-called ‘Cold War’ was far from cold, with numerous ‘hot’ proxy wars being fought in Africa and the Middle East. All these conflicts employed Soviet weaponry. The MiG fighters, the Badger and Backfire bombers, the nuclear submarines have achieved almost iconic status, but, as Anthony Tucker-Jones’s book shows, there was much more to the Soviet armory than these famous weapons.

Facing the Bear Scotland and the Cold War

Trevor Royle

Between the end of the Second World War and the collapse of Communism confrontation with the Soviet Union was an everyday reality. As part of NATO’s response, Scotland played a key role in the alliance’s forward maritime defence strategy, aimed at containing the Soviet threat from naval and air forces. During this period 10 per cent of the UK’s naval and air forces were based in Scotland, and there was a substantial US presence as well as top secret satellite and command stations.

Special Forces Berlin

Clandestine Cold War Operations of the US Army’s Elite, 1956–1990

James Stejskal

It is a little-known fact that during the Cold War, two U.S. Army Special Forces detachments were stationed far behind the Iron Curtain in West Berlin. The existence and missions of the two detachments were highly classified secrets. The massive armies of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies posed a huge threat to the nations of Western Europe. US military planners decided they needed a plan to slow the juggernaut they expected when and if a war began. The plan was Special Forces Berlin. The first 40 men who came to Berlin in mid-1956 were soon reinforced by 60 more and these 100 soldiers (and their successors) would stand ready to go to war at only two hours’ notice.

In fact, it was supposed to have been the end of war, a time of peace and stability. Politicians started to use the term, Peace Dividend, with government officials even planning on how and where it should be spent. But for those in the military, the two decades following the end of the Cold War would not be a time of peace.

Javelin Boys

Air Defence from the Cold War to Confrontation

Steve Bond

The Gloster Javelin was the UK’s first line of night and all-weather air defense both at home and in RAF Germany. In the 1950s, when it replaced the Meteor and Venom, this revolutionary bomber interceptor became integral to many great stories told here in terrific detail. With an unorthodox aerodynamic design, the Javelin initially had major production issues, which included a tendency for engines to self-destruct under certain conditions. Despite this and the criticism it faced –its nicknames included ‘Flying Flat-Iron’ and ‘Harmonious Dragmaster’ – the aircraft still receives much affection from its former aircrew. Alongside their anecdotes is a detailed history of this unusual aircraft, accompanied by photography. 667353, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 204 pages

This experience led to him playing a vital role in the first Black Buck mission during the Falklands campaign.

SU-85 and SU-100 on the Battlefield

Neil Stokes

The SU-85 and SU-100 selfpropelled guns were based on the proven chassis of the T-34 Medium Tank, and were used primarily in the antitank role. From mid-1943 onward, the SU-85 gave the Soviet forces a useful tank destroyer with a significant firepower advantage over the T-34’s 76.2mm gun. With the introduction of the T-34/85 in early 1944, the SU-85 design was upgraded with a 100mm gun to retain its firepower advantage, though a shortage of 100mm guns led to a number of improved hulls being armed with 85mm guns as the SU-85M. This book provides a pictorial history of the development and combat deployment of the SU-85, SU-85M and SU-100, illustrated with around 100 photographs. 007207, $41.95 , $27.50 , Hardback, 112 pages

Schweres Infanterie Geschutz 33

Renault R35 & R40 Through a German Lens

Alan Ranger

The Renault R35, an abbreviation of Char léger Modèle 1935 R or R35, was a French light infantry tank of the Second World War. Designed from 1933 and produced from 1936, the tank was intended as an infantry support light tank.

To this end it was relatively well-armored but slow and lacking a good antitank-capacity, fitted with a short 37 mm gun. At the outbreak of the war, the antitank-role was more emphasized leading to the development and eventual production from April 1940 of a subtype with a more powerful longer gun, the Renault R40. Due to the defeat of France the R35/40 remained the most numerous French tank of the war. About 1680 vehicles having been produced by June 1940.

Bounty

HM Armed Vessel, 1787

Kerry Jang

Bounty, a merchant vessel purchased to undertake a special mission to the South Pacific, will always be remembered for the drama of the mutiny against Captain Bligh and his epic openboat voyage that followed. The events inspired many books, and at least three major movies, and make the ship one of the most popular of all ship modeling subjects. Despite the ship’s fame, and the vast range of kits it has inspired, there are question marks over many aspects of the vessel’s fitting and, especially, how it was painted. This volume tackles these questions, reconstructing convincing color schemes for the ship both as a merchant vessel and in naval service.

White Sun War The Campaign for Taiwan

Luftwaffe in Colour: From Glory to Defeat

Major General Mick Ryan

The 106th were fresh, green and right in the pathway of the 5th German Army when the Battle of the Bulge began on December 16, 1944. From this division 6,800 men were taken prisoner, but their story didn’t end there. For the ones who miraculously escaped, there was a battle to fight, and fight it they would with every ounce of strength and courage they could muster. They would fight debilitating weather conditions more reminiscent of Stalingrad than the Belgian Ardennes. They would fight a determined enemy and superior numbers and despite all adversity they would eventually prevail. This book covers the history along with the individual stories of the incredible heroism, sacrifice and tenacity of these young Americans in the face of overwhelming odds.

Hood’s Defeat Near Fox’s Gap Prelude to Emancipation

Curtis L Older

This title is an exceptional analysis of Confederate Brigadier General John Bell Hood’s troop movements during the battle of South Mountain. For the past 160 years, all other authors misplaced Hood’s troop positions on the Fox’s Gap battlefield by approximately a half-mile. The actual location of Hood’s attack reconfigures the entire placement of the competing forces in the battle and, thus, the conclusions one makes about the struggle. The failure to understand the topographical characteristics of the battlefield led other writers to make false assumptions about Hood’s movement. Before the publication of this title, the battle for Fox’s Gap and South Mountain was never accurately reported or understood.

The War for Africa

Fred Bridgland

This book examines the height of the Cuban-South African fighting in Angola in 1987–88, when 3,000 South African soldiers and about 8,000 UNITA guerrilla fighters fought in alliance against the Cubans and the armed forces of the Marxist MPLA government, a force of over 50,000 men.

Hidden in the crevasses of World War II history is the story of the 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate), an all Norwegian American battalion, originally trained at Camp Hale, Colorado, with the original mission of liberating Norway. Their exploits during training brought them enough notoriety that members of the 99th were recruited to start the First Special Service Force and a branch of the OSS. This book tells the story of the 99th Infantry Battalion through an anthology of rarely, if ever, previously seen memoirs, journals, letters and newspaper articles written by or about the Viking soldiers.

In 1982, the United Kingdom and Argentina fought a war over an historical disagreement over the colonial “ownership” or rights over the Falkland Islands. Within months of

the Argentinian defeat, General Edgardo Calvi, then the Argentine Head of the Army Joint Chief of Staff, was instructed to undertake a wide-ranging and formal inquiry to investigate the performance of the Argentine Army during the Falklands. Calvi concluded that while the Army had the motivation, it lacked the organization, equipment, training, and ability to oppose an army capable of operating in a variety of environments.
