• NEW FROM CASEMATE • World War II Snipers The Men, Their Guns, Their Stories

Gary Yee Thousands of volumes have been published about World War II but relatively little attention has been given to the sniper. Drawing from memoirs, government documents and interviews, World War II Snipers incorporates eyewitness accounts to weave a comprehensive narrative of snipers in World War II. While certain common traits were shared among belligerents, each had its unique methodology for selecting and training snipers and, as casualties were high, their replacements. Drawn from hunters, competitive shooters, natural marksmen, outdoorsmen, city dwellers, farmers and veteran soldiers, they fought to assert local battlefield dominance and instill among their enemy a paralyzing fear. Sometimes admired and other times reviled by their own comrades because of the retaliation they drew, they were always too few in number. Their battlefield role, their victories and their defeats are retold here from neglected or forgotten sources. The scope of World War II Snipers is extensive with three chapters each on the major theaters of the war including Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the Pacific. This is supported by a lengthy chapter on the sniper rifles used by the snipers and their equipment. Finally, the last chapter discusses many overlooked or ignored subjects not raised by other researchers and provides much food for thought. The bibliography is a valuable resource to future researchers and writers. For the long-range rifle shooter and today’s snipers, the lessons of the past are as relevant today as they were when learned and practiced in World War II. 240985, $49.95 , $32.50 , Hardback, 352 pages

Take Charge and Move Out: The Founding Fathers of TACAMO True Believers and the Rise of Navy Strategic Communications Lewis McIntyre VADM Nora Tyson USN (Ret)

The US Navy’s “Take Charge and Move Out” (TACAMO) mission provides essential airborne communications to the US nuclear deterrence forces. Today it is a thriving community, respected by the Navy and the US strategic defense forces. But it wasn’t always so. Despite the enormous importance of the mission, for the first decade of their existence, the TACAMO squadrons did not provide a viable career path for officers, instead being a “one and done” tour for the junior officers who found themselves unluckily so assigned. A second tour in the squadrons was considered to be professional suicide. But in 1975, inspired by a significant commanding officer, a handful of lieutenants put their faith in a community that did not yet exist, betting their careers on that second tour. From their faith and courage was born the TACAMO community. This is the story of the birth of TACAMO, in the words of those who built the community from scratch. 241548, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 248 pages

Maj John L Plaster USAR (Ret) In 1972 the U.S. military destroyed all known photos of the top-secret Studies and Observations Group, with the intention that details could never be made public. • NEW FROM CASEMATE • The Lion of Round Top The Life and Military Service of Brigadier General Strong Vincent in the American Civil War Hans G Myers Dr Frank P Varney

Citizen-soldier Strong Vincent was many things: Harvard graduate, lawyer, political speaker, descendent of pilgrims and religious refugees, husband, father, brother. But his greatest contribution to history is as the savior of the Federal left on the second day at Gettysburg, when he and his men held Little Round Top against overwhelming Confederate numbers. Forgotten by history in favor of his subordinate, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Vincent has faded into relative obscurity in the decades since his death. This book restores Vincent to his rightful place among the heroes of the battle of Gettysburg: presenting his life story using new, never-before-published sources and archival material to bring the story of one of the most forgotten officers of the American Civil War back to the attention of readers and historians. 241111, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 216 pages

Leading Like the Swamp Fox The Leadership Lessons of Francis Marion Kevin Dougherty Steven D. Smith

Francis Marion is certainly the stuff of which legends are made. His nickname “The Swamp Fox,” bestowed upon him by one of his fiercest enemies, captures his wily approach to battle. His legacy is enshrined in the fact that more places in the United States have been named after him than any other soldier of the American Revolution, with the sole exception of George Washington. Even today’s U.S. Army Rangers include Marion as one of their formative heroes. Surely much about leadership can be learned from such an intriguing personality. Leading like the Swamp Fox: The Leadership Lessons of Francis Marion unlocks those lessons. Divided into three parts, the book first presents the historical background and context necessary to appreciate Marion’s situation. The main body of the book then examines Marion’s leadership across eight categories, with a number of vignettes demonstrating Marion’s competency. The summary then captures some conclusions about how leadership impacted the American Revolution in the South Carolina Lowcountry. 241159, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 256 pages

General Jan Smuts and his First World War in Africa, 1914–1917

David Brock Katz WWI ushered in a renewed scramble for Africa. At its helm, Jan Smuts grabbed the opportunity to realize his ambition of a Greater South Africa. He set his sights upon the vast German colonies of South-West Africa and East Africa – the demise of which would end the Kaiser’s grandiose schemes for Mittelafrika. As part of his strategy to shift South Africa’s borders inexorably northward, Smuts even cast an eye toward Portuguese and Belgian African possessions. Smuts, his abilities as a general much denigrated by both his contemporary and then later modern historians, was no armchair soldier. This cabinet minister and statesman donned a uniform and led his men into battle. He learned his soldiery craft under General Koos De la Rey’s tutelage, and another soldier-statesman, General Louis Botha during the South African War 1899–1902. He emerged from that war, immersed in the Boer maneuver doctrine he devastatingly waged in the guerrilla phase of that conflict. His daring and epic invasion of the Cape at the head of his commando remains legendary. 240176, $37.95 , $24.99 , Hardback, 288 pages

Portugal’s Bush War in Mozambique

Al J Venter Portugal fought a bush war in Mozambique — one of the most beautiful countries in the world — for over a decade. The small European nation was ranged against formidable odds and in the end was unable to muster the resources required to effectively take on the might of the Soviet Union and its collaborators — every single communist country on the planet and almost all of sub-Saharan Africa. Yet, Al Venter argues, Portugal did not actually lose the war, and indeed fought in difficult terrain with a good degree of success over an extended period. It was radical domestic politics that heralded the end. Mozambique is once again embroiled in a guerrilla war, this time against a large force of Islamic militants, many from Somalia and some Arab countries, and unequivocally backed by Islamic State and the lessons of Mozambique’s bush war are still relevant today. 241104, $37.95 , $24.99 , Hardback, 280 pages

• NEW FROM CASEMATE • Among the Firsts: Lieutenant Colonel Gerhard L. Bolland’s Unconventional War D-Day 82nd Airborne Paratrooper, OSS Special Forces Commander of Operation Rype

Matthew T Bolland Unconventional warfare tactics can have a considerable effect on the outcome of any war. During World War II, the United States government developed and employed two new methods of fighting. The first was the development of “paratroop” units, as they were first called. The second was the formation of a covert and sabotage operations branch called the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Lt. Colonel Bolland was involved in both of these “firsts.” During the D-Day invasion he parachuted behind enemy lines, jumping out of the 82nd Airborne lead aircraft with General James Gavin. After fighting with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment for thirty-three days straight, he returned to England and became involved with the OSS Scandinavian Section. He served as Field Commander for their Operation, code named Rype. This was the only American military undertaking, albeit covert, in Norway during the entire course of the war. As a young boy growing up in rural western Minnesota, Bolland got his military start with the Minnesota National Guard, before being accepted to West Point, solely on merit. His military career lasted seventeen years. Lt. Colonel Bolland ended up with numerous decorations including the Norwegian Liberation Medal and Citation, the Bronze Star for valor, the French Fouragerre of Croix de Guerre with Palms and posthumously the Congressional Gold medal awarded to the OSS Society on behalf of all former OSS members that served during the war. His story reveals the struggles, successes, failures and ultimate victories, detailing what went right and what went wrong with these new unconventional methods of fighting. 241210, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 384 pages

The True Story of Catch-22 The Real Men and Missions of Joseph Heller’s 340th Bomb Group in World War II

Patricia Chapman Meder After the publication of his bestselling novel Catch-22, Joseph Heller usually chose to deny that any of his richly drawn characters were based on his actual war mates. However, to those who served with Heller in the 340th Bomb Group the novel’s characters were indeed recognizable— the hard-drinking, vengeful, and disillusioned Chief White Half Oat, young, sliced-in-half Kid Sampson, shrieking, frenzied Hungry Joe, Colonel Cathcart, General Dreedle, Yossarian and that capitalist supreme, Milo Minderbinder. In this book, written and colorfully illustrated by the daughter of the 340th Bomb Group’s commander, Colonel Willis Chapman, we finally encounter the real men and combat missions on which the novel was based. Group relating twelve richly told tales of their own. 241326, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 240 pages

Blue Water War Maritime Struggle in the Mediterranean and Middle East, 1940–1945

Brian E Walter For three millennia the Mediterranean Sea served as the center of western civilization and the scene of many colossal wars and naval battles. In the early summer of 1940, this ancient body of water again played host to a new and extensive conflict as the Kingdom of Italy challenged Britain for dominance within the region. With France on the verge of collapse and Britain facing the prospect of imminent invasion, the Italians hoped to re-establish control over the Mediterranean. The only thing standing in their way was the heavily outnumbered British Mediterranean Fleet and the equally outnumbered British ground and air forces present in the region. Together, these forces would determine whether the Mediterranean reverted back to Italian control or whether the Allies would prevail and retain supremacy over this great body of water for themselves.. 241081, $39.95 , $25.99 , Hardback, 352 pages

The Seleucid Army of Antiochus the Great Weapons, Armour and Tactics

Jean Charl Du Plessis The Seleucid Empire was a superpower of the Hellenistic Age, the largest and most powerful of the Successor States, and it’s army was central to the maintenance of that power. Antiochus III campaigned from the Mediterranean to India, earning the sobriquet ‘the Great’. Jean Charl Du Plessis has produced the most in depth study available in English devoted to the troop types, weapons and armor of Antiochus’ army. He combines the most recent historical research and latest archaeological evidence with a strong element of reconstructive archaeology, that is the making and using of replica equipment. The army’s performance in its many battles, sieges and campaigns is analyzed and assessed. 09179A, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 360 pages

The Perdiccas Years, 323–320 BC

Tristan Hughes At around 4:00pm 11 June 323 BC in Babylon, Alexander the Great breathed his last. He left one of the largest empires the world had seen, stretching from Greece to the Punjab. With Alexander dead and leaving no clear successor, many of his former brothers-in-arms quickly became fierce foes as they vied for dominance. What followed was an extraordinary time for military campaigns. Powerful warlords and warrior queens attempted to assert their authority throughout the length and breadth of Alexander the Great’s former empire; from Afghanistan to Athens, from Africa to Asia powerful armies decided matters by the spear. This first book covers the initial years of the conflict and several major campaigns that immediately seized the kingdom. 775115, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 400 pages

An Invincible Beast Understanding the Hellenistic Pike Phalanx in Action

Christopher Matthew Christopher Matthews critically examines phalanx combat by using techniques such as physical re-creation, experimental archaeology, and ballistics testing, and then comparing the findings of this testing to the ancient literary, artistic and archaeological evidence, as well as modern theories. The Rise of Persia and the First Greco-Persian Wars The Expansion of the Achaemenid Empire and the Battle of Marathon

Manousos E Kambouris Manousos Kambouris revisits the epic events of the first Greco-Persian War and the Persian invasion of Greece. Darius I, the Persian King of Kings ordered the invasion of Greece ostensibly to punish the Greeks, for their support of the Revolt, but in truth to achieve god-ordained world dominance. Describing the invasion in great detail, the author analyses the king’s immense army, considering its composition and logistical constraints. The campaign leading to Marathon and the decisive battle itself are clearly narrated. Manousos Kambouris’ meticulous research brings fresh insights to this timeless tale of defiance of the odds and victory for the underdog. 09329A, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 240 pages

Alexander the Great, a Battle for Truth and Fiction The Ancient Sources And Why They Can’t Be Trusted

David Grant Most of what we ‘know’ about Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) comes from the pages of much later historians, writing 300 years or more after these events. These writers drew on the accounts of earlier authors who were contemporary with Alexander, some of whom took part in the events they described. David Grant examines the fragments of these testimonies. The author explains how manuscripts became corrupted in their journey from the ancient world to the modern day. This work highlights why the legacy of Alexander is built on shaky foundations. 094719, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 336 pages

BATTLE OF THE BULGE • ••ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL• War in Greek Mythology

Paul Chrystal Even though war, and conflict generally, feature prominently in Greek mythology, comparatively little has been written on the subject. This is surprising because wars and battles in Greek mythology are freighted with symbolism and laden with meaning and significance. The ubiquity of war themes in the Greek myths is a reflection of the prominence of war in everyday Greek life and society, which makes the relative obscurity of published literature all the more puzzling. This book redresses this by showing how conflict in mythology and legend resonated loudly as essential symbols in Greek culture and how they are represented in classical literature, philosophy, religion, and art. 766168, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 240 pages

Religion & Classical Warfare The Roman Republic Matthew Dillon Christopher Matthew

Religion was integral to the conduct of war in the ancient world and the Romans were certainly no exception. No campaign was undertaken, no battle risked, without first making sacrifice to propitiate the appropriate gods (such as Mars, god of War) or consulting oracles and omens to divine their plans. Yet the link between war and religion is an area that has been regularly overlooked by modern scholars examining the conflicts of these times. This volume addresses that omission by drawing together the work of experts from across the globe. 834316, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 336 pages

Egypt and Judaea

John D. Grainger Egypt was the last of the Macedonian Successor states to be swallowed up by Roman expansion. The Ptolemaic rulers had allied themselves to Rome while their rivals went down fighting. However, Cleopatra’s famous love affair with Marc Antony ensured she was on the wrong side of the Roman civil war between him and Octavian (later to become Caesar Augustus). After the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at the naval battle of Actium, Octavian swiftly brought it under direct Roman control, though it took several campaigns to fully subjugate the whole country. These campaigns have previously been largely neglected. 781598, $26.95 , $17.99 , Paperback, 224 pages

War in Roman Myth and Legend

Paul Chrystal The book opens by addressing how the Romans did adopt and adapt Greek myths to fashion the beginnings of Roman history; it goes on to discuss the Roman gods of war and the ubiquity of war in Roman society and politics and how this was reflected in the Aeneas Foundation Myth, the Romulus and Remus Foundation Myth and the legends associated with the founding of Rome. Warlike Women in Roman Epic and Trojan heroes are discussed next and the use of mythology by Roman poets other than Virgil. The Theban Legion and the vision of Constantine myths conclude the book. 766120, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 280 pages

The chapters have been carefully structured by the editors so that this wide array of scholarship combines to give a coherent, comprehensive study of the role of religion in the wars of the Roman Empire. 834309, $49.95 , $32.50 , Hardback, 384 pages

Asia Minor, Syria and Armenia

Richard Evans While conquering Greece and Macedonia the Romans defeated an intervention by the Seleucid Empire, the most powerful of the Hellenistic states founded by Alexander the Great’s successors. Soon Roman armies crossed to Asia for the first time to carry the war to the Seleucids. Here they faced one of the most sophisticated armies of the ancient world, evolved from Alexander’s all-conquering war machine with the exotic additions of elephants, scythed chariots and heavily armored cataphract cavalry. The Seleucids also possessed a formidable navy. This book gives a clear narrative of the course of these wars, explaining how the Roman war machine coped with formidable new foes and the challenges of unfamiliar terrain and climate. 08521A, $26.95 , $17.99 , Paperback, 176 pages

The Battle of Dyrrhachium (48 BC) Caesar, Pompey, and the Early Campaigns of the Third Roman Civil War

Gareth C Sampson In 49 BC the Roman Republic collapsed once more into bloody civil war. At the heart of this war lay the two greatest living Roman commanders, Pompey the Great and Julius Caesar, each having built their own factions within the Roman oligarchy and refusing to compromise. The subsequent civil war would be fought for control of the Republic.

Gareth Sampson outlines the strategic background, describing the early campaigns of the civil war and the factions of Caesar and Pompey that fought for control of the resources of the Republic. The Battle of Dyrrhachium is analyzed to determine the strengths and weakness of both armies and the aftermath of the battle that saw Caesar defeated and Pompey in the ascendancy. 793584, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 248 pages

Britain and Rome: Caesar to Claudius The Exposure of a Renaissance Fraud

P J O’Gorman This is a bold reassessment of one of the pivotal points in British history. PJ O’Gorman analyses the sources for the period from Julius Caesar’s first forays into these islands to the invasion under the Emperor Claudius and the conclusions he reaches are nothing short of radical and call into question much of the accepted narrative of Roman invasion and conquest. 769510, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 224 pages

Leading the Roman Army Soldiers and Emperors, 31 BC – AD 235

Jonathan Mark Eaton The Roman imperial army represented one of the main factors in the exercise of political control by the emperors. The effective political management of the army was essential for maintaining the safety and wellbeing of the empire as a whole. This book analyses the means by which emperors controlled their soldiers and sustained their allegiance from the battle of Actium in 31 BC, to the demise of the Severan dynasty in AD 235. Recent discoveries have revolutionised our understanding of the Roman army. This study provides an up to date synthesis of a range of evidence from archaeological, epigraphic, literary and numismatic sources on the relationship between the emperor and his soldiers. 797032, $28.95 , $18.99 , Paperback, 224 pages

The Roman Empire in Crisis, 248–260 When the Gods Abandoned Rome

Paul N Pearson This book is a narrative history of a dozen years of turmoil that begins with Rome’s millennium celebrations of 248 CE and ends with the capture of the emperor Valerian by the Persians in 260. It was a period of almost unremitting disaster for Rome, involving a series of civil wars, several major invasions by Goths and Persians, economic crisis, and an empire-wide pandemic, the ‘plague of Cyprian’. There was sustained persecution of the Christians. A central theme of the book is that this was a period of moral and spiritual crisis in which the traditional state religion suffered greatly in prestige, paving the way for the eventual triumph of Christianity. 09097A, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 336 pages

Four Days in September The Battle of Teutoburg

Jason R Abdale For twenty years, the Roman Empire conquered its way through modern-day Germany, claiming all lands from the Rhine to the Elbe. However, when at last all appeared to be under control, a catastrophe erupted that claimed the lives of 10,000 legionaries and laid Rome’s imperial ambitions for Germania into the dust. In late September of 9 AD, three Roman legions were attacked in a four-day battle with the Germanic barbarians. The Romans were taken completely by surprise, betrayed by a member of their own ranks: the German officer and secret rebel leader, Arminius. The defeat was a heavy blow to both Rome’s military and its pride. Though the disaster was ruthlessly avenged, later attempts at conquering the Germans were half-hearted at best. 019682, $26.95 , $17.99 , Paperback, 256 pages

Gaius Marius The Rise and Fall of Rome’s Saviour

Marc Hyden Gaius Marius was one of the most remarkable and significant figures of the late Roman Republic. At a time when power tended to be restricted to a clique of influential families, he rose from relatively humble origins to attain the top office of consul. He even went on to hold the post an unprecedented seven times. Marius’ subsequent career was primarily that of an elder statesman, but it was dominated by his rivalry with his erstwhile subordinate, Sulla, which ultimately led to the latter’s bloody coup. 702333, $39.95 , $25.99 , Hardback, 344 pages

Marcus Agrippa Right-hand man of Caesar Augustus

Lindsay Powell Marcus Agrippa personified the term ‘right-hand man’. As Emperor Augustus’ deputy, he waged wars, pacified provinces, beautified Rome, and played a crucial role in laying the foundations of the Pax Romana for the next two hundred years - but he served always in the knowledge he would never rule in his own name. Why he did so, and never grasped power exclusively for himself, has perplexed historians for centuries. This book is lucidly written by the author of the acclaimed biographies Eager for Glory and Germanicus. Illustrated with color plates, figures and high quality maps, Lindsay Powell presents a penetrating new assessment of the life and achievements of the multifaceted man who put service to friend and country before himself. 846173, $39.95 , $25.99 , Hardback, 384 pages

Caracalla A Military Biography

Ilkka Syvänne Caracalla has one of the worst reputations of any Roman Emperor. Many ancient historians were very hostile and Edward Gibbon later dubbed him the common enemy of mankind. Yet his reign was considered by at least one Roman author to be the apogee of the Roman Empire. He provides insight into the English response to the new challenges of warfare in these years of turbulence and danger. But above all, this is the story of how England came into being. 782496, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 280 pages

King Arthur’s Wars

Jim Storr ‘King Arthur’s Wars’ describes one of the biggest archaeological finds of our times; yet there is nothing new to see. There are secrets hidden in plain sight. We speak English today, because the Anglo-Saxons took over most of post-Roman Britain. How did that happen? There is little evidence: not much little archaeology, and even less written history. There is, however, a hug amount of speculation. ‘King Arthur’s Wars’ brings an entirely new approach to the subject. The answers are out there, in the countryside, waiting to be found. Months of field work and map study allow us to understand, for the first time, how the Anglo-Saxons conquered England; county by county and decade by decade. 777817, $69.95 , $45.50 , Hardback, 320 pages

The Second Battle of Preston, 1715 The Last Battle on English Soil

Jonathan David Oates Preston was the first battle of the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 and the last to be fought on English soil. This book provides a new account of the events leading up to the campaign, focusing on events in England but not neglecting those in Scotland and on the Continent. It then moves on to explore the movements of both armies, British and Jacobite, without neglecting civilian forces, as they marched through Northumberland, the Scottish Lowlands and then into Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. It deals with both civilian and military actions, at the strategic and tactical level. The appendices provide listings of some of the men who fought the battle, with their parish of origin and former occupations. 070319, $55 , $35.99 , Paperback, 274 pages

Italy, Piedmont and the War of Spanish Succession 1701-1712

Ciro Paoletti The War of Spanish Succession is well known in English concerning Flanders and Germany, not that much concerning Spain, not at all about Italy. The Italian front was so important that the French considered it as important as the German one, and committed there their best generals. William III considered it to be far more important than Spain, and, in spite of having no British army there, after King William’s death London committed to it 1/10 of her war expense. It was considered so important in Vienna that the Emperor sent there his best general. Last, it was the front where all the French hopes to submit Europe died in Turin in 1706 after the first dramatic wound they suffered in Blenheim in 1704. 336493, $59.95 , $38.99 , Paperback, 356 pages

• 18TH CENTURY • • ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL • No Want of Courage The British Army in Flanders, 1793-1795

R.N.W. Thomas By using predominantly unpublished sources, including the General Orders issued by the Duke of York’s headquarters, it has been possible to provide detail on the structures necessary for the daily functioning of an army on campaign. The internal organization of the British Army’s fighting units is often taken for granted, but the start of any war during the 18th century inevitably led to expansion and developments in recruiting methods. As the proportion of recruits increased, unit cohesion and experience declined for both officers and men, affecting discipline, operational capability, and health. Structures evolved throughout the eighteenth century, becoming more formalized with increased definition of the duties performed in each role. 070401, $55 , $35.99 , Paperback, 330 pages

Hastenbeck 1757 The French Army and the Opening Campaign of the Seven Years War Olivier Lapray Will Raffle

The outbreak of the Seven Years War saw the formation of new alliances and led to the conduct of military operations in several theaters simultaneously. The conduct of the campaign of 1757 testifies to the difficulty of exercising command in the face of a government for which short-term results took precedence over means. The campaign of the French armies in Westphalia saw its climax play out around the village of Hastenbeck on 26 July 1757, where the forces of Maréchal d’Estrées gained a victory that came close to knocking Hanover out of the war. The story of the campaign can be told from the human perspective thanks to the large body of memoirs and letters from officers, both general and subordinate, of cavalry and infantry regiments. 059803, $45 , $29.50 , Paperback, 152 pages

The Sieges of the ‘45 Siege Warfare during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745-1746

Jonathan D. Oates Siege warfare was more common than set piece battles in Europe at this time and the ‘45 was no exception. There were two sieges of both Ruthven Barracks and of Carlisle, whilst the castles at Edinburgh, Blair Atholl, and Stirling were also besieged, as were the more recently-built Forts Augustus, George, and William. This book examines the eight places which were under siege in 1745-1746, examining the history and strength of the fortress or walled town, its garrison and the strength of the attackers, along with the artillery employed by both sides. It narrates each siege, using manuscript and published contemporary sources in order to do so. 336554, $37.50 , $24.50 , Paperback, 204 pages

Like a Brazen Wall The Battle of Minden, 1759, and its Place in the Seven Years War

In order make a comprehensive record, orders of battle, uniform details, and an illustrated battlefield tour are included. 336585, $44.95 , $29.50 , Paperback, 278 pages

‘Their Infantry and Guns Will Astonish You’ The Army of Hindustan and European Mercenaries in Maratha service 1780-1803

Andy Copestake By the middle of the 18th century, the Mughal Empire in India was in serious decline. The rulers of the various breakaway successor states faced a major military problem. Their armies were being scattered by much smaller forces of European led and trained troops. Their answer was to buy in specialist help in the form of European mercenaries to train their own troops in the methods of the British and French. This led to a number of so called ‘Trained Brigades’ of regular eighteenth century infantry and formidable artillery being added to the armies of many of the Indian Princes. This book details the most successful of these formations, the Army of Hindustan in the service of the Maratha Prince Madhaji Scindia and his successor Daulat Rao. 059773, $45 , $29.50 , Paperback, 224 pages

Military tailoring inspired a parallel flowering of uniform splendor that continued into the 1830s and sparked an enduring fascination with military costume that still rages today. The Army of George II 1727-1760 The Soldiers who Forged an Empire

Peter Brown The Army of George II is often forgotten, as 18th century British military history is bookended by the victories of the Duke of Marlborough during the War of the Spanish Succession and the final defeat of Napoleon by the Duke of Wellington. Yet it was in this period that Britain rose to prominence, not only as a European, but also as a world power. This was the army that crushed French colonial ambitions and in so doing laid the groundwork for the British Empire. In this book you will find details of how the army was recruited, funded, and how it functioned day-to-day. There are also new insights into the logistics of 18th century warfare. 118969, $59.95 , $38.99 , Paperback, 314 pages

1745 - Jacobite Battle for Britain

James Hoare 1745 - Jacobite Battle for Britain, a 100-page historical special written by James Hoare, looks at the last battle to be fought on British soil, when in the autumn of 1745, the people of Great Britain and Ireland were asked what sort of country they wanted to live in. Kings and Princes, of course, had their own opinions on how the future should look, but the success or failure of the Jacobite ‘45 was in the hands of ordinary people who were asked to stand up and fight. 295011, $18.99 , $12.50 , Paperback, 100 pages

Fight for a Throne The Jacobite ‘45 Reconsidered

Christopher Duffy The bid of Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobites for the throne of Britain has never lost its grip on the popular imagination. In July 1745 he and a tiny group of companions arrived in Scotland. They came unannounced and unsupported, and yet within less than five months Charles was able to lead an army to within marching distance of London and make King George II fear for this throne. These were not the achievements of a backward-looking cause. It all made a telling contrast to the demeaning nature of the Hanoverian government in Britain, which was mired deep in corruption. These revelations, which show the Jacobite enterprise of 1745 as a potent and modernizing force, turn the accepted interpretation of this episode on its head. 05915A, $60 , $39.50 , Paperback, 682 pages

John H. Gill Gill tackles the political background to the war, especially the motivations that prompted Austria to launch an offensive against France while Napoleon and many of his veterans were distracted in Spain. Though surprised by the timing of the Austrian attack on April 10th, the French Emperor completely reversed a dire strategic situation with stunning blows that he called his ‘most brilliant and most skillful maneuvers’. In this respect 1809 represents a high point of the First Empire as well as a watershed, for Napoleon’s armies were declining in quality and he was beginning to display the corrosive flaws that contributed to his downfall five years later. 327573, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 512 pages

In the wake of Aspern, while the Austrians vacillated, Napoleon gathered every man, horse and gun around Vienna, setting the stage for the gigantic spectacle of the Battle of Wagram, the final chapter in the story of the 1809 war. 327580, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 464 pages

The Devil’s Trap The Victims of the Cawnpore Massacre During the Indian Mutiny

James W Bancroft Much has been written about the siege of Cawnpore and the political events which caused it, but there less known about the people who suffered the ordeal. Who were they, and where did they come from? James Bancroft is well-known for the depth of research he carries out, and during this project he has followed the lives of many of the victims. He has tried to redress this by consulting official documentation, studying primary sources and contacting descendants, then cross-referencing and checking the information. To try to understand opinions on both sides, he also studied documents and contacted individuals who believe the events at Cawnpore were India’s first steps in the freedom struggle towards independence. 718013, $49.95 , $32.50 , Hardback, 192 pages

Alan Curtis This book tells the brutal struggle between two sides to control the wealth of the Atacama and for retention of Bolivia’s coast. The result was that Chile gained the mineral resources of the “New North” and Bolivia became the second landlocked country on the continent. The land war was more or less ignored abroad, although it included some of the biggest battles ever fought on the continent, using all the latest technology, including breech loading rifles, cannons, and machine guns. The Bolivian Army started the war with 806 officers and only 1369 other ranks! The battle of Vegkop proved the superiority of musket-fire directed from a secure wagon laager against an enemy armed primarily with spears, and would be the model for successful Boer engagement against the Zulu in 1838 at the battles of Veglaer and Blood River. The campaign of 1838 also demonstrated that the Zulu was masters of surprise, ambush and maneuver in the open field. 059896, $45 , $29.50 , Paperback, 276 pages

The Battle of Lissa, 1866 How the Industrial Revolution Changed the Face of Naval Warfare

Quintin Barry Half a century on from the end of the Napoleonic wars, a total transformation had taken place in every aspect of naval warfare. The principal changes had been the introduction of steam power, of shell guns and of armor plating. The use of steam engines to power warships was substantially assisted by the invention of the screw propeller which quickly made paddle steamers obsolete. And the effect of shell guns was hugely increased by the development of rifled ordnance. This book is the first comprehensive account of the campaign of Lissa in the English language for more than a century. It explores the progress of naval shipbuilding and tactics in the period leading up to 1866, together with the development of the Italian and Austrian navies. 059926, $55 , $35.99 , Hardback, 255 pages

Robert N. Watt This study, continuing from the author’s acclaimed book I Will Not Surrender a Hair of a Horse’s Tail, begins with Victorio’s return to New Mexico in January 1880. By the end of May, Victorio’s troops have rendered the Ninth Cavalry unfit for field service. This was achieved through the Apache strategy of directly targeting the US army’s horses and mules. Yet the Apaches also suffer their first major defeat of the campaign at the end of May. By September the US army had negotiated a cross border operation of questionable legality. Known as the Buell Expedition, the aim was to coordinate with Mexican state troops to destroy the Apaches. This volume ends with Mexican state troops inflicting a major defeat upon the Apaches at Tres Castillos. 113030, $59.95 , $38.99 , Paperback, 502 pages

Conflict in the Crimea British Redcoats on Russian Soil

Don Richards The author relies to a great extent on contemporary accounts of a large number of British men and women who were unwittingly caught up in this appalling war. As well as surviving the efforts of their determined enemy, the Russians, they had to overcome the harshest weather, rampant disease and woefully inadequate administrative support. As revealed to a shocked nation by the first war reporters, medical care was largely nonexistent and wounded faced the trauma of being left for days without medical attention. The Crimean War was the catalyst for the modernization of the Army, due to the disgraceful injustice of conditions and lack of leadership and care by many in authority. 783387, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 224 pages

James H. Bruns History has judged it to have been a serious threat to the capital, but James H. Bruns examines how the nature of the Confederate raid on Washington in 1864 has been greatly misinterpreted—Jubal Early’s maneuvers were in fact only the latest in a series of annual southern food raids. He presents a new prospective in explaining Jubal Early’s raid on Washington by focusing on why things happened as they did in 1864, and identifies the cause-and-effect connections that are truly the stuff of history, forging some of the critical background links that oftentimes are ignored or overlooked in books dominated by battles and leaders. 240114, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 256 pages

Barksdale’s Charge The True High Tide of the Confederacy at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863

Phillip Thomas Tucker Barksdale’s brigade was already renowned in the Army of Northern Virginia for its standalone fights at Fredericksburg. On the second day of Gettysburg it was just champing at the bit to go in. The Federal left was not as vulnerable as Lee had envisioned, but had cooperated with Rebel wishes by extending its Third Corps into a salient. Hood’s crack division was launched first, seizing Devil’s Den, climbing Little Round Top, and hammering in the wheatfield. Barksdale himself was killed at the apex of his advance. Darkness, as well as Confederate exhaustion, finally ended the day’s fight as the shaken, depleted Federal units on their heights took stock. 002279, $18.95 , $12.50 , Paperback, 336 pages

In 1863, the Army of Northern Virginia used the Valley as its avenue of invasion, culminating in the battle of Gettysburg. When Sheridan returned to the Valley in 1864, the stakes jumped dramatically. To lose the Valley would mean to lose the state. For the North, the momentum its war effort had gained by capturing Atlanta would quickly evaporate. For the South, more than its breadbasket was at stake—its nascent nationhood lay on the line. 211658, $12.95 , $8.50 , Paperback, 168 pages

Dreams of Victory General P. G. T. Beauregard in the Civil War

Sean Michael Chick Few Civil War generals attracted as much debate and controversy as Pierre Gustav Toutant Beauregard. He combined brilliance and charisma with arrogance and histrionics. He was a Catholic Creole in a society dominated by white Protestants, which made him appear exotic next to the likes of Albert Sidney Johnston and Robert E. Lee. He was reviled by Jefferson Davis and often mocked by Mary Chesnut in her diary. Yet, he was popular with his soldiers and subordinates. Outside of Lee, he was the South’s most consistently successful commander, yet he lived his life in the shadow of his one major defeat: Shiloh. 215212, $16.95 , $11.50 , Paperback, 192 pages

19THCENTURY CENTURY• • • •19TH James Longstreet and the American Civil War The Confederate General Who Fought the Next War

Harold M. Knudsen LTC (Ret.) The American Civil War is often called the first “modern war.” Sandwiched between the Napoleonic Wars and World War I, it spawned a host of “firsts” and is considered a precursor to the larger and more deadly 20th century wars. Confederate Gen. James Longstreet made overlooked but profound modern contributions to the art of war. This book draws heavily upon 20th century U.S. Army doctrine, field training, staff planning, command, and combat experience and is the first serious treatment of Longstreet’s generalship vis-a-vis modern warfare. Not everyone will agree with Knudsen’s conclusions, but it will now be impossible to write about the general without referencing this important study. 214758, $32.95 , $21.50 , Hardback, 288 pages

Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. Tullahoma—one of the most brilliantly executed major campaigns of the war—was pivotal to Union success in 1863 and beyond. And now readers everywhere will know precisely why. 215045, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 408 pages

Texas troops fought in almost every major sector of the sprawling Chickamauga battlefield, from the first attacks on September 18 on the bridges spanning the creek to the final attack on Snodgrass Hill on September 20. Fortunately, many of the survivors left vivid descriptions of battle action, the anguish of losing friends, the loneliness of being so far away from home, and their oftencolorful opinions of their generals. The authors of this richly detailed study based their work on hundreds of personal accounts, memoirs, postwar newspaper articles, diaries, and other primary sources. It is the first exploration of the critical role Texas enlisted men and officers played in the fighting near West Chickamauga Creek in September 1863. 215557, $32.95 , $21.50 , Hardback, 336 pages

• WORLD WAR I • Stemming the Tide Officers and Leadership in the British Expeditionary Force 1914

Spencer Jones The BEF proved its fighting qualities in the fierce battles of 1914 and its reputation has endured. However, the same cannot be said for many of its commanders, who have frequently been portrayed as old fashioned, incompetent, and out of touch with events on the battlefield. Yet the officers who led the BEF to war were every bit as professional and hard-bitten as the soldiers they commanded. As this book reveals, when faced with the realities of modern combat, the officers of the BEF were prepared for the challenge. This collection offers a broad picture of command at all levels of the BEF through a series of biographical essays. This book is a revised and expanded 2nd edition including amendments, a new introduction, and additional images. 070975, $50 , $32.50 , Paperback, 386 pages

The German Corpse Factory A Study in First World War Propaganda

Stephen Badsey The German Corpse Factory is one of the most famous and scandalous propaganda stories of the First World War. In Spring 1917, parts of the British press claimed that Germany was so short of essential fats and glycerin that the German Army was being forced to boil down the bodies of its own dead soldiers, causing a brief scandal of accusation. Behind the scenes, British propaganda experts opposed exploiting the story as it was obviously false, and contrary to their basic principles of never telling an obvious lie in an official statement. But at the time, the British government refused to deny that the ‘German Corpse Factory’ might really exist. 628279, $39.95 , $25.99 , Paperback, 327 pages

• WORLDWAR WAR1 I• • • WORLD Bullets, Bombs and Poison Gas Supplying the Troops on the Western Front 19141918, Documentary Sources

David Rogers Soldiers in the trenches were issued with four bullets a day. Four bullets a day is 28 per week. Therefore a million soldiers need 28 million bullets per week. Supplying the troops was further complicated by the need to ensure that the many and varied shells were available for the howitzers, mortars and other artillery. Furthermore, there was a need for essential supplies of a whole manner of other materials, including rations for the troops and food for the many horses. The static nature of battle was somewhat unique in the annals of warfare and led to the use of a narrow gauge railway network and a ferry port in Kent to speed deliveries along. Servicing this supply chain was a complex business, leading to some interesting issues. 512080, $49.95 , $32.50 , Paperback, 304 pages

Those Bloody Kilts The Highland Soldier in the Great War

Thomas Greenshields The book is the first to examine the experience of the Highland soldier in the Great War, seeking the truth behind the myths. Much work on Highland soldiers has perpetuated myths about their unique character and martial spirit. This book examines such mythology and offers new insights into the practicality of the kilt, the use of the pipes, identity and morale, and revelations about courage, nerves, shell-shock and failure and the ruthless use of the bayonet. 113085, $47.50 , $30.99 , Paperback, 538 pages

• SPANISH CIVIL WAR • Tank Combat in Spain Armored Warfare During the Spanish Civil War 1936–1939

Anthony J Candil The use of tanks in the Spanish Civil War wedded traditional war to modern technology. The fighting in Spain did not offer any easy answers, however, to the question of infantry-armor cooperation, primarily because the tanks supplied were not very worthy and had been supplied in small numbers, even though the Republicans organized an ‘armored division.’ The situation for the tanks on the Nationalist side was so bad in practical terms that they reused captured Russian armor in their units. Tank employment in Spain did offer many lessons, but the lessons did not always lie in what was done or accomplished but precisely on what was not done and was not accomplished. 009704, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 264 pages

The Spanish Civil War at Sea Dark and Dangerous Waters

Michael Alpert The Spanish Civil War underlined the importance of the sea as the supply route to both General Franco’s insurgents and the Spanish Republic. There were attempted blockades by Franco as well as attacks by his Italian and German allies against legitimate neutral, largely British, merchant shipping bound for Spanish Republican ports and challenges to the Royal Navy, which was obliged to maintain a heavy presence in the area. This book is based on original documentary sources in both Britain and Spain and is intended for the general reader as well as students and academics interested in the history of the 1930s, in naval matters and in the Spanish Civil War. 764362, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 256 pages

Bloody Verrieres: The I. SS-Panzerkorps Defence of the Verrieres-Bourguebus Ridges Volume 1: Operations Goodwood and Atlantic, 18–22 July 1944 Arthur W Gullachsen Russell Hart

South of the Norman city of Caen, the twin features of the Verrières and Bourguebus ridges were key for the British Second Army in late July 1944—taking them was crucial if it was to be successful in breaking out of the Normandy bridgehead. To capture this ground, Allied forces would have to defeat the strongest German armored formation in Normandy: the I. SSPanzerkorps “Leibstandarte.” The resulting battles of late July and early August 1944 saw powerful German defensive counterattacks south of Caen inflict casualties, regain lost ground and defeat Anglo-Canadian operations in detail. This is an account of the I. SS-Panzerkorps’ defensive operations. 240022, $37.95 , $24.99 , Hardback, 312 pages

How Carriers Fought Carrier Operations in WWII

Lars Celander In November 1921 the first purpose-built aircraft carrier was launched by the Japanese, followed by the launch of the British Hermes. The conversion of battlecruisers into aircraft carriers after World War I required the consideration of issues including handling aircraft on the flight deck and the techniques of attacking enemy ships, and the evolution of carrier operations was ongoing when World War II broke out. With a focus on the conflict in the Pacific between the U.S. Navy and the imperial Japanese fleet, this title examines how aircraft carriers fought during World War II by first considering all the tools and building blocks of carrier operations. 006215, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 296 pages

Black Tulip The Life and Myth of Erich Hartmann, the World’s Top Fighter Ace

Erik Schmidt Black Tulip is the dramatic story of history’s top fighter ace, Luftwaffe pilot Erich Hartmann. It’s also the story of how his service under Hitler was simplified and elevated to Western mythology during the Cold War. Over 1,404 wartime missions, Hartmann claimed a staggering 352 airborne kills, and his career contains all the dramas you would expect. There were the frostbitten fighter sweeps over the Eastern Front, drunken forays to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, a decade of imprisonment in the wretched Soviet POW camps, and further military service during the Cold War that ended with conflict and angst. 008240, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 240 pages

• WORLD WAR II • Tanks in Hell A Marine Corps Tank Company on Tarawa Romain Cansiere Oscar E. Gilbert

In this unique study Oscar Gilbert and Romain Cansiere use official documents, memoirs, interviews with veterans, as well as personal and aerial photographs to follow Charlie Company from its formation, and trace the movement, action—and loss—of individual tanks in this horrific four-day struggle. It is a story of escapes from drowning tanks, and even more harrowing escapes from tanks knocked out behind Japanese lines. It is the story of how the two surviving tanks and their crews expanded a perilously thin beachhead, and cleared the way for critical reinforcements to come ashore. But most of all it is a story of how a few unsung Marines helped turn near disaster into epic victory. 006512, $19.95 , $12.99 , Paperback, 264 pages

The Battle for Tinian Vital Stepping Stone in America’s War Against Japan

Nathan N. Prefer In July 1944, the 9,000-man Japanese garrison on the island of Tinian listened warily as the thunder of the United States Navy and Marine Corps, Army and Air Corps, descended on their neighboring island, Saipan, just three miles away. There were 20,000 Japanese troops on Saipan, but the US obliterated the opposition after a horrific all-arms campaign. The sudden silence only indicated it was now Tinian’s turn. When the battle for Tinian finally took place the US acted with great skill. Historian Samuel Elliot Morrison called it “the most perfectly executed amphibious operation of the entire war.” Nevertheless, the Japanese, and the already decimated US Marines suffered hundreds of more casualties. 241319, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 240 pages

The Day Rommel Was Stopped The Battle of Ruweisat Ridge, 2 July 1942 Major F. R. Jephson MC TD Chris Jephson

George VI’s biographer, Sir John Wheeler Bennett wrote “The actual turning of the tide in the 2nd World War may be accurately determined as the first week of July 1942.” This book argues that it is possible to be even more exact: the tide turned at about 21.00 hrs. on 2 July 1942, when Rommel’s tanks withdrew for the first time since the fall of Tobruk on 20 June, or arguably since 14 January 1942 at El Agheila. 241272, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 304 pages

Tank Killers A History of America’s World War II Tank Destroyer Force

Harry Yeide This is the story of the specialized U.S. armored force designed specifically to kill enemy tanks in direct combat. It follows the men who fought in the TDs from the formation of the force in 1941 through the victory over the Third Reich in 1945, through North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, describing a story of American flexibility and pragmatism in military affairs. It draws heavily on the records of the tank destroyer battalions and the units with which they fought, and veterans of the force add their personal stories. 006505, $14.95 , $9.99 , Paperback, 256 pages

Blocking Kampfgruppe Peiper The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the Battle of the Bulge

Frank van Lunteren In December 1944 a German army group crashed through the American line in the Ardennes forest. Caught by surprise, the Allies were initially only able to throw two divisions of paratroopers to buttress the collapse—the 82nd Airborne, which was rushed to the area of St. Vith, and the 101st, which was trucked to Bastogne. In this work Van Lunteren provides a close-in view of the 504th P.I.R. during the Battle of the Bulge as well as its gallant sacrifice. Using never before published diaries, letters, battle reports and interviews with over 100 veterans, a comprehensive account is painted of a triumphant U.S. regiment in one of the fiercest fought campaigns in the history of the U.S. Army. 241289, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 368 pages

The Silent Service in World War II The Story of the U.S. Navy Submarine Force in the Words of the Men Who Lived It Michael Green Edward Monroe-Jones

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, the U.S. Navy had a total of 111 submarines. However, this fleet was not nearly as impressive as the number suggests. It was mostly a collection of aging boats, with only a few of the newer, more modern Gato-class boats. With the war in Europe was already two years old and friction with Japan ever-increasing, help from what would become known as the Silent Service in the Pacific was on the way: there were 73 of the new fleet submarines under construction. This book takes you through the war: what it was like to serve on submarines in combat, the exhilaration of a successful attack, and the terror of being depth-charged. 241265, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 264 pages

• WORLD WAR II • Macchi C.202 Folgore Italy’s Best Fighter of the Second World War Davide F Jabes Alessandro Romanello

The Macchi C.202 was probably the most successful Italian fighter during the Second World War. It is generally agreed that the performance of the Macchi was superior to both the Hawker Hurricane and the Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk and on a par with the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. V. It is not by chance that virtually all the Italian top scoring aces flew this plane either with the Regia Aeronautica or the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana. While there is consensus that air war, especially in the African theater, would have been different had the aircraft been adopted before. 558300, $45 , $29.50 , Hardback, 256 pages

Off Target American Guided Bombs, Missiles and Drones: 1917-1948

William Wolf Off Target relates in detail the then “secret” research, development, and combat employment of these early guided bombs, missiles, and drones from 1917 to 1948. Using formerly confidential manuals, reports, microfilm print outs, and photos, collected over 40 years, author Wolf gives the air war historian and enthusiast a detailed look at this unknown topic that progressed from biplane drones to sophisticated post-WWII guided missiles. 558164, $60 , $39.50 , Hardback, 544 pages

Sub Hunters Australian Sunderland Squadrons in the Defeat of Hitler’s U-boat Menace 194243

Anthony Cooper 1943 was the turning point in the Battle of the Atlantic, when the balance of forces, technologies, and tactics turned irrevocably against Germany’s U-boats. The victory thus obtained not only secured Britain’s transatlantic lifeline to the United States, but in so doing enabled the vast build up in military forces in Britain necessary to launch D-Day in June 1944. This is the story of one part of that effort during the decisive mid-war period, in which these two Australian squadrons established a combat record second to none. 558324, $45 , $29.50 , Hardback, 352 pages

Odilo Globocnik The Devil’s Accomplice

Max Williams Outside of the Nazi hierarchy, Odilo Globocnik is almost certainly the most culpable in the planned and almost successful attempt to annihilate all the Jews of Europe. Not only did he play a leading role in the process of murdering the Jews, he was also the arch highwayman in the plunder of their possessions. Additionally, he was responsible for the compulsory uprooting of thousands of Polish non-Jewish citizens, the destruction of their communities, and the trafficking of enforced slave laborers. The ultimate crime of mass murder far outweighs the less significant, but nevertheless considerable, offenses of robbery and human trafficking and Odilo Globocnik was guilty of them all. 557952, $72 , $46.99 , Hardback, 864 pages

Operation Mallory Major from Below Soldiers under a Hailstorm of Bombs

Paolo Dossena The Allied Operation Mallory Major (northern Italy, July 1944) aimed at the destruction of all bridges across the Po River and its tributaries and at isolating the enemy in the northern Apennine mountains (the Gothic Line). The Allied Air Forces could count on the ground support of the guerrillas from the Great Partisan Pocket (in the Apennines south of Piacenza) and were opposed by the Flak. 558089, $35 , $22.99 , Paperback, 144 pages

RAF Fighter Command Defence of the Realm 1936-1945 Ron Mackay Mike Bailey

Royal Air Force Fighter Command’s brief was to provide an effective aerial barrier to any attempt at domination of British skies. The aircraft and technical resources on hand between 1936 and WWII’s initiation were thankfully improved to a level that was barely sufficient to withstand the hitherto unchallengeable Luftwaffe’s advance across Western Europe. Between 1940 and 1942 the Command generally found itself on the backfoot. The introduction of aircraft designs that would change the situation, however costly, featured prominently from the mid-point of WWII. The Luftwaffe found itself being challenged and regularly bested. By D-Day the Command’s efforts had materially contributed to the Allied on-surge that would lead to victory. 557273, $60 , $39.50 , Hardback, 528 pages

In the Hell of the Eastern Front The Fate of a Young Soldier During the Fighting in Russia in WW2

Arno Sauer In June 1941, German forces launched Operation Barbarossa – Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union. Instead of the swift knock-out the Germans had anticipated, the war against the Soviets ground for almost four years. It was into this bloody theater of war that Fritz Sauer was sent. Having initially joined the ranks of the Reichsarbeitsdienst, Fritz was posted as part of the 132nd Infantry Division serving on the Eastern Front having been deployed to the Crimea. Based on Fritz’s own recollections and narrative, this account of a young soldier’s experiences in the Second World War was brought together by his son. SOE in Denmark The Special Operations Executive’s Danish Section in WW2

An Official History From a small number of activities against the German occupation of Denmark in 1940, a resistance movement developed which by 1944, with the support of Special Operations Executive, had become a highly effective intelligence gathering and sabotage organisation. This forgotten story of SOE and its agents in Denmark, which faced hazardous conditions, was written right after the war by a SOE staff member and read and validated by the Director of SOE, Major General Colin Gubbins. Many documents were burned at SOE’s London headquarters in Baker Street when the organisation was wound down in 1946, making this history of the Danish Section an irreplaceable study. 015042, $49.95 , $32.50 , Hardback, 208 pages

The Wehrmacht advanced into Soviet territory, and killed one million Red Army soldiers, with Hitler expecting total victory. The ensuing battles frustrated German hopes for quick victory. The ‘derailment’ of the Wehrmacht at Smolensk ultimately became the crucial turning point. Serving as a companion to the previous 3 text volumes in this study, and as a standalone battlefield atlas, this volume provides over 100-commissioned color maps that trace the course of the campaign. 070999, $69.95 , $45.50 , Paperback, 152 pages

• WORLD WAR II • German Assault Guns and Tank Destroyers 1940 - 1945

Anthony Tucker-Jones The assault guns and tank destroyers deployed by the Wehrmacht during the Second World War are not as famous as tanks, but they were remarkably successful, and they are the subject of this wide-ranging photographic history. As the conflict progressed, the German army had to find a use for its obsolete panzers, and this gave rise to the turretless Sturmgeschütz or assault guns designed for infantry support. From 1944 onwards they played a vital role in Nazi Germany’s increasingly defensive war. 845992, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 128 pages

Battleships: WWII Evolution of the Big Guns

Philip Kaplan Beginning with a pictorial essay on battleship construction in the 1930s and 1940s, this new book looks at the various design facets of the last great capital ships of the world’s navies. Kaplan offers us a glimpse into those massive American and German navy yards and construction facilities that were put to use during this time, acquainting us with the arenas in which these final examples of battleship technology were laid down, built up, launched, fitted out, commissioned and taken out to sea. There is a look at some of modern history’s most significant battleships, relaying their thrilling stories, defining characteristics and eventual fates. Ships featured include Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Warspite, Tirpitz and Yamato. 463077, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 144 pages

The Ghettos of NaziOccupied Poland

Ian Baxter Following the 1940 invasion of Poland, the Nazis established ghettos in cities and towns across the country with the initial aim of segregating and isolating the Jewish community. These closed sectors were referred to as Judischer Wohnbezirk or Wohngebiet der Juden (Jewish Quarters). Using contemporary images this well researched and inevitably harrowing book shows the harsh and deteriorating conditions of daily life in these restricted areas. In reality the ghettos were holding areas prior to the transportation to concentration, extermination and work camps, such as Auschwitz-Birkenau and Belzec. 761804, $26.95 , $17.99 , Paperback, 128 pages

Stilwell and the Chindits The Allied Campaign in Northern Burma 1943 – 1944

Jon Diamond This latest book in the highly successful Images of War series covers the dramatic events that saw ultimate Allied victory over the Japanese in remote Northern Burma on the Chinese border. The plan involved two separate but concurrent operations. US Army General Joseph Stilwell was ordered to train up two Chinese divisions and seize the key Japanese base at Myitkyina. At the same time Brigadier Orde Wingate and his 77 Brigade (known as the Chindits) penetrated and fought deep behind Japanese lines. As this highly informative and well illustrated book reveals, the concept was ultimately successful with Myitkyina falling to Stilwell’s Chinese/US force in mid 1944. 831982, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 176 pages

Air War Over North Africa USAAF Ascendant

David Mitchelhill-Green The vast, sprawling deserts of North Africa were a new and strange terrain to American aircrew. U.S. air power nevertheless played a decisive role in the Allied invasion of Northwest Africa and the subsequent surrender of Axis forces in Tunisia in May 1943. Later bombing missions flown from North Africa struck Axis targets across Europe and supported the Allied invasions of Sicily and mainland Italy. This book is a pictorial account of U.S. fighter aircraft and bombers — including the iconic B-17 Flying Fortress, P-38 Lightning and B-24 Liberator — and the aircrews that fought to establish ascendancy over North African skies and beyond. 881792, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 216 pages

The Waffen SS Ardennes Offensive Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives

Ian Baxter In late 1944 under extreme pressure on both the Eastern and Western fronts, Hitler realized he needed to force the Allies into negotiating a truce thereby saving Germany from total defeat. Using the Christmas period to enhance the vital element of surprise, he ordered a devastating attack through the rugged and mountainous Ardenne region with the key Allied port of Antwerp as the objective. This book, with its extensive text and rare and unpublished photographs with detailed captions, tells the story of the Waffen-SS offensive, known as `Wacht am Rhein` (Watch on the Rhine). 012898, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 128 pages

The Aftermath of Dunkirk

Stephen Wynn Operation Dynamo, the successful evacuation from the beaches at Dunkirk between 27 May and 4 June 1940, was not only a pivotal moment of the war, but one that changed its final outcome. There has been much debate in the years since the end of the war concerning the “Hitler Halt” order, which was given to German Panzer units waiting patiently on the outskirts of Dunkirk to be allowed to finish the job they had started. Although the Battle of Dunkirk must ultimately go down tactically as a German victory, the rescue of so many of its men, ensured that like a phoenix, Britain rose from the ashes of defeat to gain a great and lasting victory. 738691, $26.95 , $17.99 , Paperback, 176 pages

Hell in the Central Pacific 1944 The Palau Islands

Jon Diamond In September 1944, the Americans attacked Peleliu and Angaur in the Palau group of the Western Caroline Islands. While Angaur fell in four days, on Peleliu the Japanese resisted tenaciously. It was only after over two months’ bitter fighting that the Americans finally controlled the island. Despite the heavy cost, the benefits of this hard fought and costly victory were doubtful. But, as the graphic images and well researched text bear witness, there is no denying the courage and determination shown by the attacking US forces. 762160, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 240 pages

Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe: Heinkel He 162

Dan Sharp The history of the Luftwaffe’s last minute single-jet fighter, the Heinkel He 162, is neither standard nor straightforward. Originally conceived as the jet fighter anyone could fly into combat, the He 162 was designed and built in under five months - an astonishing and unparalleled feat of engineering. But what emerged was not a simple jet fighter but a tricky ‘widow-maker’ which killed far more of its own pilots than it ever did those of the enemy. Going back to the original wartime documentation, author Dan Sharp examines the story of this remarkable aircraft in detail. 658245, $19.99 , $12.99 , Paperback, 116 pages

Panzer Lehr Division 1944-45

Frederick Steinhardt The Panzer Lehr Division was one of the most elite German armored formations in existence in early 1944. Brazilians at War Brazilian Aviation in the Second World War

Santiago Rivas When WWII erupted, Latin America - despite being initially neutral - became part of it. Brazil, with its large provision of goods to the Allied Powers, was soon a victim of the Axis submarines - leading to the urgent development of an anti-submarine aviation arm. As it was developed, it also sent a fighter squadron and an observation unit to the Mediterranean Front - taking part in the operations over Northern Italy and supporting the Brazilian ground forces, as well as other Allied units, until the end of the war. This book contains a large volume of information that is not been published in English before, including many photographs and color profiles of the aircraft. 512585, $39.95 , $25.99 , Paperback, 96 pages

Secret Projects of the Luftwaffe: Blohm & Voss BV 155

Dan Sharp The story of the Messerschmitt Me 109’s ultimate development, the Blohm & Voss BV 155, begins in 1942 with plans to split the Me 109 family into three branches – a standard fighter, a high-altitude fighter and a carrier-based fighter. Initially these were known as the Me 409 but later became the Me 155 A, B and C. The project was given to the French to develop, where it stalled. But when Germany got its first taste of what the USAAF’s bomber force was capable of – suffering huge damage to its war-critical industries as a result of massed raids on its factories and cities – work on the Me 155 B was recommenced as a matter of urgency. 658320, $19.99 , $12.99 , Paperback, 116 pages

Under Himmler’s Command The Personal Recollections of Oberst Hans-Georg Eismann, Operations Officer, Army Group Vistula, Eastern Front 1945 Hans-Georg Eismann Frederick Steinhardt

Under Himmler’s Command addresses two areas of World War II hitherto neglected - Heinrich Himmler as a military commander, and the German staff officer corps during the last months of the war on the Eastern Front. The author, Hans-Georg Eismann, was the Operations Officer for Army Group Vistula, a German formation to which Heinrich Himmler was appointed as commander. Eismann’s memoir of this period has remained unpublished for over fifty years. He recounts the disturbing and sometimes bizarre atmosphere that pervaded the German high command in the East during the final months of the war. Much light is thereby thrown on Himmler the military commander, and on the final climactic battles fought on the Eastern Front during 1945. 62243H, $59.95 , $38.99 , Hardback, 176 pages

• WORLD WAR II • Ceylon at War, 19391945

Ashley Jackson Ceylon at War explains why the British War Cabinet considered the island to be strategically vital as it became a surrogate Singapore following Japan’s dramatic conquest of Southeast Asia and Burma. It documents the measures taken to defend the island and the flight of thousands of civilians and service personnel to its harbors, as well as the April 1942 Japanese raids on Colombo and Trincomalee, described by Churchill as ‘the most dangerous moment of the war’. Ceylon’s role as a base for imperial and Allied forces and headquarters of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten’s South East Asia Command is explained, along with the transformations brought to the island by the war. 390656, $49.95 , $32.50 , Hardback, 240 pages

Of Islands, Ports and Sea Lanes Africa and the Indian Ocean in the Second World War

Ashley Jackson Of Islands, Ports, and Sea Lanes explains the operational and strategic importance of the ports and sea lanes of Africa and the Indian Ocean during the Second World War. In addition, it offers a novel account of the war in the Indian Ocean, a busy and vital theater of military operations throughout the conflict, though one that is overlooked in most historical studies. 390748, $49.95 , $32.50 , Hardback, 324 pages

Approach To Battle Training The Indian Army During The Second World War

Alan Jeffreys The Indian Army was the largest volunteer army during the Second World War. Indian Army divisions fought in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy - and went to make up the overwhelming majority of the troops in South East Asia. Over two million personnel served in the Indian Army and India provided the base for supplies for the Middle Eastern and South East Asian theaters. This monograph is an interpretation of the Indian Army as a holistic organization during the Second World War. It will look at training in India - charting how the Indian Army developed a more comprehensive training structure than any other Commonwealth country. Finally, it will show that the Indian Army was reorganized after experiences of the First World War. 096511, $69.95 , $45.50 , Hardback, 249 pages

Enduring the Whirlwind The German Army and the Russo-German War 1941-1943

Gregory Liedtke Despite the efforts of historians, many aspects of the struggle between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during the Second World War remain obscure. One of the most persistent of these is the notion that the German Army was a paragon of military professionalism whose defeat on the Eastern Front was solely attributable to the meddling of a former Corporal and the numerical superiority of the Red Army. This work seeks to address the notion of German numericalweakness in terms of Germany’s ability to replace its losses and regenerate its military strength. Employing a host of primary documents and secondary literature, it traces the development and many challenges of the German Army. 390519, $39.95 , $25.99 , Paperback, 248 pages

Eagles over Husky The Allied Air Forces in the Sicilian Campaign, 14 May to 17 August 1943

Alexander Fitzgerald-Black In the summer of 1943, the United Nations began Operation HUSKY, the invasion of Sicily. The Eagles over HUSKY – the airmen of the Allied air forces – played a crucial role in the assault. Eagles over Husky challenges the notion that the Allied militaries bungled total victory in Sicily. It assesses one of the greatest air battles of the Second World War. Eagles over Husky tells the integrated story of the air war waged during the Battle of Sicily. The author draws upon experiences, perspectives, and sources from both Allied and Axis camps to inform the analysis and enhance the narrative. 174942, $55 , $35.99 , Hardback, 192 pages

Everything Worked like Clockwork The Mechanization of British Regular and Household Cavalry 1918-1942

Roger Salmon The mechanization of British and Household Cavalry regiments took place between the two World Wars and into 1942. This book describes the process by which many horsed cavalrymen were re-trained to operate and fight in armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) and the experiences of some of the men and regiments involved. Extensive use has been made of regimental and War Office archives, and particularly from the Imperial War Museum’s sound archives - the oral testimonies of soldiers who had experienced this huge change. A number of veterans were interviewed for this work. The interwar impact on cavalry mechanization; the role of the British Army in general; disarmament; and rearmament are described again with illustrations from oral testimonies. 070968, $45 , $29.50 , Paperback, 326 pages

• FALKLANDS WARS • SAS South Georgia Boating Club An SAS Trooper’s Memoir and Falklands War Diary

Tony Shaw Many aspire to serve with the Special Air Service, arguably the world’s most prestigious regiment, but few achieve their aim. In this inspiring memoir the author describes how he left school without any qualifications and embarked on a 30 year career much of it spent in Hereford, including four years in ‘The Regiment’. Against the odds he rose through the ranks before being commissioned and eventually retiring as a Major. This is a commendably modest account of one man’s unique career which provides a fascinating insight into elite special forces soldiering. 08776A, $49.95 , $32.50 , Hardback, 256 pages

Amphibious Assault Falklands The Battle of San Carlos Water Michael Clapp Ewen Southby-Tailyour

Since he was in charge of the amphibious operations in the Falklands War, it goes without saying that there is no one better qualified to tell the story of that aspect of the campaign than Commodore Michael Clapp. Here he describes, with considerable candor, some of the problems met in a Navy racing to war and finding it necessary to recreate a largely abandoned operational technique in a somewhat ad hoc fashion. During the time it took to ‘go south’ some sense of order was imposed and a not very well defined command structure evolved, this was not done without generating a certain amount of friction. 155064, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 300 pages

San Carlos to Stanley 40 Commando in the Falklands War

Peter Jackson-Lee San Carlos to Stanley is the first history of 40 Commando in the Falklands and dispels the belief that their only role was to look after the beachhead during this conflict. Men of 40 Commando were involved in the only daylight helicopter assault of the Falklands conflict, against an Argentine position on Sapper Hill, and if the Argentines had not surrendered and all British movements stopped, C Company followed by A Company would have been first to reach Stanley. San Carlos to Stanley has personal accounts from officers and men of 40 Commando including the Ajax Bay and San Carlos bombing which resulted in numerous casualties including two fatalities. 070890, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 170 pages

A Carrier at Risk Argentinean Aircraft Carrier and AntiSubmarine Operations against Royal Navy’s Attack Submarines during the Falklands/ Malvinas War, 1982

Mariano Sciaroni Based on years of research, including extensive investigation into naval operations of both sides of the conflict, A Carrier at Risk is a vibrant and lucid account of a week-long cat-and-mouse game between antisubmarine warfare specialists on board ARA 25 de Mayo, and multiple nuclear attack submarines of the Royal Navy: an entirely unknown, yet crucial aspect of the South Atlantic War. Illustrated by over 100 photographs, maps, and color profiles, this volume closes one of the major gaps – though also a crucially important affair – in the coverage of this conflict. 628705, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 88 pages

Skyhawks over the South Atlantic Argentine Skyhawks in the Malvinas/Falklands War 1982

Santiago Rivas By 1982, the backbone of the Argentine combat aviation was formed by three batches of Douglas A-4 Skyhawks, with the A-4B and C of the Air Force and the A-4Qs of the Navy. Despite their age and lacking protection, they took on the overwhelming struggle to fight the British Task Force that opposed the Argentine forces on the Malvinas/Falkland Islands. The Skyhawks were responsible for inflicting the greatest damage upon the Royal Navy, sinking HMS Coventry, Ardent, Antelope, the RFA Sir Gallahad, and LCU F-4, while damaging many other ships and striking ground targets. The experience of the Skyhawk during the war was another addition to the legend the model had become over the skies of Vietnam and Israel. 866397, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 96 pages

All for One, One for All Argentine Navy Operations during the Falklands/Malvinas War

Dr Jorge Boveda All for One, One for All provides a contemporary perspective of the baptism of fire of one of the most welltrained war fighting institutions in Latin America: the Argentine Navy. It offers a rare insight into the relationship between institutional culture and modern warfare, with specific reference to the Falklands/Malvinas War of 1982, and is a case study of how a very modest navy with very few naval platforms engaged in a limited war against a major naval power and nevertheless was able to make its mark. 05919A, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 88 pages

Three Sips of Gin Dominating the Battlespace with Rhodesia’s famed Selous Scouts

Timothy Bax There is nothing that terrorized Russian and Chinese-backed guerillas fighting Rhodesia’s bush war in the 1970s more than the famed Selous Scouts. Too afraid to even whisper the name amongst themselves, they referred to soldiers of the unit simply as Skuzapu, or pickpockets. It was not for nothing that history has recorded the Selous Scouts Regiment as being one of the deadliest and most effective killing machines in modern counter-insurgency warfare. In this special ‘deluxe’ edition, we follow Tim on his missions into the silence of the shadows. As his story unfolds, we begin to understand how he managed to survive and it is here you will find the significance of ‘three sips of gin’ revealed. 384293, $59.95 , $38.99 , Paperback, 448 pages

• MODERN WARFARE • COLD WAR & BEYOND • Korean Atrocity!

Philip D Chinnery As there was no clear victor at the conclusion of the Korean War, no war crime trials were held. But, as this book reveals, there is evidence of at least 1,600 atrocities and war crimes perpetrated against troops serving with the United Nations command in Korea. The bulk of the victims were Americans but many British servicemen were tortured, killed or simply went missing. Korean Atrocity examines the three phases of this little known but bitter conflict from the POWs perspective the first phase when the two warring factions fought themselves to a stalemate, next, the treatment of POWs in North Korea and China, and finally the repatriation/post active conflict period. This is a shocking, sobering and thought-provoking book. 07447A, $28.95 , $18.99 , Paperback, 296 pages

Marine Corps Tank Battles in Korea

Oscar E. Gilbert The outbreak of the Korean conflict caught America (and the Marine Corps) unprepared. The Corps’ salvation was the existence of its Organized Reserve, the availability of modern equipment in storage and the bravery, initiative, and adaptability of individual Marines. Here, Oscar Gilbert presents an equally exhaustive and detailed account of the little-known Marine tank engagements in Korea, supported by 48 photographs, eight original maps, and dozens of survivor interviews. Marine Corps Tank Battles in Korea details every action, from the valiant defense at Pusan and the bitter battles of the Chosin Reservoir, to the grinding and bloody stalemate along the Jamestown Line. It is a story of bravery and fortitude you will never forget. 005317, $19.95 , $12.99 , Paperback, 320 pages

Combat Over Korea

Philip D Chinnery Combat Over Korea offers a superb selection of thrilling accounts by Allied airmen of their experiences. These include the exploits of the 21 Troop Carrier Squadron (The Kyushu Gipsies) who flew into impossibly short strips to rescue thousands of wounded soldiers – they received the Presidential Citation for their feat. Others tell of their hair-raising escapades after being shot down. While a number miraculously avoided capture (often due to the skill of fellow pilots), many were less lucky. Their treatment in captivity was often brutal. Very few escaped but 1st Lieutenant Melvin Shadduck did and he tells his story here, as do others who have remarkable experiences to describe. 844773, $39.95 , $25.99 , Hardback, 208 pages

Red Devils over the Yalu A Chronicle of Soviet Aerial Operations in the Korean War 1950-53 Stuart Britton Igor Seidov

The Korean War (1950-1953) was the first full-scale air war in the jet age. This book discusses the Soviet participation in the Korean War and presents a view of this war from the opposite side. Soviet records pertaining to the Korean War were for a highly classified, since Soviet air units were fighting in the skies of North Korea “incognito”. The given work is the first major work in the post-Soviet era. The stories of veterans have been supplemented with archival documents and the work of Western historians. The author presents the aerial combats and work of Soviet fighter regiments in 1950-1953, and dedicates this work to all the men on both sides in the Korean air war. 384415, $49.95 , $32.50 , Paperback, 600 pages

Whispers in the Tall Grass

Nick Brokhausen Picking up where We Few left off, Whispers in the Tall Grass opens as the war moves into a new phase. The enemy are using special formations to hunt recon teams and missions are now rarely accomplished without heavy contact. Despite the teams’ careful prep, losses are mounting. Written in the same vivid, immediate style that made We Few a cult classic, Whispers in the Tall Grass follows Habu, Crusader and other teams as they undertake missions in this new, deadlier phase of the war. The narrative veers from hair-raising to tragic and back as the teams insert into hot targets, act as Bright Light for stricken teams, and play hard in between missions to diffuse the ever-rising tension. 00775B, $32.95 , $21.50 , Hardback, 216 pages

Inchon Landing MacArthur’s Korean War Masterstroke, September 1950

Gerry van Tonder In this series on battles of the Korean War, North Korean ground forces, armor and artillery cross the 38th Parallel into South Korea, inflicting successive ignominious defeats on the ill-prepared US-led UN troops, pushing them ever southward into a tiny defensive enclave—the Pusan Perimeter—on the tip of the Korean Peninsula. General Douglas MacArthur meets with considerable resistance to his plans for a counteroffensive, from both Washington and his staff in South Korea and Japan. However, the controversial MacArthur’s obstinate persistency prevails and, with a mere three weeks to go, the US X Corps is activated to execute the invasion on D-Day, 15 September 1950. 756961, $24.95 , $16.50 , Paperback, 136 pages

• MODERN WARFARE • COLD WAR & BEYOND•• Into the Iron Triangle Operation Attleboro and Battles North of Saigon, 1966

Arrigo Velicogna Attleboro was the largest American operation in the Vietnam War to date, the culmination of one year of bloody battles between the 9th Division and II Field Force Vietnam. It would be a test for the campaign that US General William Westmoreland had planned for 1967. It would be also a test of different tactical approaches to be used in Vietnam: an ‘infantryheavy’ approach favored by the commander of the 196th, General Edward H. De Saussure, and for firepower-intensive approach championed by the Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division, General William DePuy. 336264, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 88 pages

Phoenix 13 Americal Division Artillery Air Section Helicopters in Vietnam

Darryl James A collection of war stories closely based on the author’s experiences flying scout/ observation helicopters in Vietnam. Story telling was a daily evening occurrence for the solo scout pilots. These stories, called “TINS,” an irreverent pilot acronym for ‘this is no shit,’ allowed the solo pilots to learn from each other’s experiences and mistakes. The “TINS” within this collection reveal the brotherhood that developed between pilots and their crew chiefs in combat. The solo pilots relied on their courage, swapping stories and a bit of luck to survive. 759429, $29.95 , $19.50 , Hardback, 192 pages

Along for the Ride Navigating Through the Cold War, Vietnam, Laos & More

Henry Zeybel During Hank Zeybel’s first tour in Vietnam he flew 772 C130 sorties as a navigator. He volunteered for a second tour, requesting assignment to B26s so he could “shoot back.” When B26s were removed from the inventory, he accepted a Spectre gunship crew slot, flying truck-busting missions over the Ho Chi Minh Trail. He describes the terror of flying through heavy AA fire over the trail, and the heroics of the pilots in bringing their crews through. In this memoir of Vietnam, his Air Force career, and his second career as a journalist and writer, Zeybel’s admiration of the skill and bravery of pilots— many of whom who he depended on for his very survival— shines through his descriptions of combat missions and being “along for the ride.” 240381, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 288 pages

Target Saigon 1973-75 Volume 2 - The Fall of South Vietnam: The Beginning of the End, January 1974 – March 1975

Albert Grandolini Drawing on a wide range of Vietnamese-language sources, the author presents a detailed account of the continuing efforts of North Vietnam to invade the South, enlivened by previously unpublished photographs and color profiles. The battle of Ban Me Thuout would be the pivotal event leading to the rapid collapse of S. Vietnam. While the battle was going on, President Nguyen Van Thieu of S. Vietnam decided to take radical measures by redeploying his forces, abandoning half of the country to shorten his logistic communication lines and concentrate his depleted forces around Saigon and the Mekong Delta area. He probably also hoped that by aggravating the military situation, he would force the US to resume their military aid. 512929, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 104 pages

Logistics in the Vietnam Wars, 1945– 1975

N S Nash CBE The combatants in the three Vietnam wars from 1945 to 1975 employed widely contrasting supply methods. This fascinating book reveals that basic traditional techniques proved superior to expensive state of the art systems. During the Indochina or ‘French’ war, France’s initial use of wheeled transport and finally air supply proved vulnerable given the terrain, climate and communist adaptability. The colonial power gave up the unequal struggle after the catastrophic defeat at Dien Bien Phu. To stem the advance of Communism throughout the region, the Americans stepped in to support the pro-Western South Vietnam regime and threw vast quantities of manpower and money at the problem. The cost became unpopular at home. 757449, $34.95 , $22.99 , Hardback, 224 pages

The SAS ‘Deniables’ Special Forces Operations, denied by the Authorities, from Vietnam to the War on Terror

Tony May During the 10,000-day Vietnam war Australia had agreed with the United States to have a team of Australian Army Special Air Services (SAS) soldiers conduct covert missions into Cambodia. The SAS soldiers would be bivouacked in Thailand. With their names changed for security and personal safety reasons, this is a dramatized story of events that happened involving a band of Australian Special Air Service trained specialists involved in covert activities who were co-opted into the Defence Intelligence Organisation repertoire of Plausibly Deniable assets deployed into the shadows of political indulgence in locations where Australian forces should not be seen or heard. 09630A, $42.95 , $27.99 , Hardback, 312 pages

• COLD WAR WARFARE & BEYOND• • • MODERN CIA and British Mercenaries in Angola, 1975-1976 From Operation IA/ FEATURE to Massacre at Maquela

Stephen Rookes The 1974, Carnation Revolution came as a blessing for independence movements in Portugal’s African colonies: Angola, Mozambique, and Portuguese Guinea. As in a number of sub-Saharan countries finding themselves free of the colonialism, the political vacuum left behind gave different factions the opportunity to impose their own rule, in Angola lasting from 1975-2002. In 1975-1976, no fewer than 9 different armed forces were involved in the fighting. In addition, a large group of British mercenaries were recruited to train FNLA soldiers. From Operation IA/FEATURE to Massacre at Maquela examines the dynamics of the Angolan civil war and the inner workings of geopolitical interests, of CIA covert operations, and mercenary recruitment. 059063, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 88 pages

Rhodesian Fire Force 1966-80

Kerrin Cocks On 11 November 1965, Rhodesian prime minister Ian Smith declared his country independent of Britain. As Communist-trained guerrillas flooded the country, the beleaguered Rhodesians, hardpressed for manpower and military resources, were forced to devise new and innovative methods to combat the insurgency. Fire Force was their answer. In spite of the overwhelming number of enemies pitted against them, Rhodesian Fire Forces accounted for thousands of enemy guerrillas, with a kill ratio exceeding 80:1. At the end of the war, ZANLA generals admitted their army could not have survived another year in the field-in no small part due to the ruthless efficiency of the Fire Forces, described by Charles D. Melson as the ultimate “killing machine.” 294055, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 72 pages

transition in Africa. For God and the CIA Cuban Exile Forces in the Congo and Beyond, 1959-1967

Stephen Rookes This is the story of the men whose hatred of Communism and Fidel Castro inspired them to volunteer for covert missions in Cuba and the Congo. It relies on their personal testimonies, government archives, declassified documents, and piecing together a series of events to form them into a plausible and well-documented whole. Detailing how over 150 Cuban exiles known as the Makasi were recruited for missions in the Congo, it sheds light on CIA covert operations which are widely unknown. Starting with an examination of the CIA’s covert warfare apparatus and its early operations, it takes us on a journey across two continents, while also demonstrating how important Cuban exiles were in the CIA’s fight to uphold the tenets of the Domino Theory. 336240, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 88 pages

• COLD WAR & BEYOND • • MODELING • The Erawan War Volume 1: The CIA Paramilitary Campaign in Laos, 1961-1969

Ken Conboy During a National Security Council meeting in March 1971, Henry Kissinger commented “When the CIA reaches the point of having the largest army in Southeast Asia, we better review the program!” He was referring to the secret war brewing in Laos, where the CIA was training, funding, and leading tens of thousands of indigenous guerrillas within the kingdom and, occasionally, across its borders.

The Erawan War mini-series strips away the veil surrounding this conflict, recounting in detail the CIA’s largest paramilitary operation of the Cold War, as well as the Royalist armed forces that battled for decades against communist opponents. It includes hundreds of outstanding photos featuring case officers, military hardware, and battle scenes. 377068, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 64 pages

The Sino-Soviet Border War of 1969 Volume 1 - First Clash at Damansky Island Dmitry Ryabushkin Harold Orenstein

The first volume of this twopart mini-series examines, among other things, the historical and political precursors of the 1969 events, the reaction to them in different countries, and the battle of 2 March 1969. Principal attention is focused on a detailed chronological description of the battle, Soviet and Chinese tactics, and the weapons used. Inasmuch as the present state policies in Russia and China are aimed not only at keeping silent about the 1969 events, but also opposing any attempts to study what happened in detail, the authors have relied on finding veterans of the battles and obtaining from them documentary evidence of those distant events. 05923A, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 76 pages

Fury from the North North Korean Air Force in the Korean War, 1950-1953

Douglas C. Dildy It was almost exactly 15.00 hours local time, on 25 June 1950, when nine Yakovlev Yak-9P fighters of the North Korea’s ‘Korean People’s Air Force’ (KPAF) simultaneously attacked Seoul International Airport and the Kimpo Airfield outside Seoul, the capitol of South Korea. In the course of their attacks, the Yaks shot up ground installations and strafed one of Douglas C-54 transports of the US Air Force involved in evacuation of US citizens from the war-stricken country. The Yaks returned to finish off the C-54 at Kimpo around 19.00. Thus began the aerial component of the Korean War, which was to last until mid-1953. 390335, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 96 pages

The Erawan War Volume 2: The CIA Paramilitary Campaign in Laos, 1969-1974

Ken Conboy During a closed-door meeting of Washington policy makers on 31 March 1971, a senior CIA officer informed National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger that the agency was controlling up to 8 divisions of indigenous troops in Laos. “When the CIA reaches the point of having the largest army in Southeast Asia, we better review the program!” The Erawan War, Volume 2 details how the CIA operation in Laos reached that point, becoming its largest paramilitary operation of the Cold War. With photos and maps, it covers the wide range of CIA-supported units in Laos, from guerrilla regiments that went toe-to-toe with the North Vietnamese army in pitched campaigns, to top-secret commandos that crossed borders to wage clandestine sabotage attacks. 070609, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 78 pages

The Sino-Soviet Border War of 1969 Volume 2 Confrontation at Lake Zhalanashkol, August 1969

Dimitry Ryabushkin Harold Orenstein The communist victory in the Chinese civil war resulted in the formation of a new socialist state – the People’s Republic of China. The Soviets were the first to recognize the PRC, and subsequently provided China with considerable assistance. After Stalin’s death, however, relations rapidly deteriorated over disagreements regarding Stalin’s legacy and co-existence with capitalist states. The second volume of this two-part mini-series examines events from 15 March 1969 until the conclusion of the conflict. Principal attention is focused on a detailed description of the battles, Soviet and Chinese tactics and weapons. This study is the most detailed and objective work on the theme of the 1969 Sino-Soviet border war. 377051, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 76 pages

Carrier Killer China’s Anti-Ship Ballistic Missiles and Theater of Operations in the early 21st Century Gerry Doyle Blake Herzinger

The idea of an anti-ship ballistic missile has taken root in China’s military planning. The country is not only building more of its first version of such a weapon, the DF-21D, but has developed an anti-ship warhead for another such missile, the more-numerous DF-26, billed as having a 2,500-mile range — more than enough to hit Guam from several hundred miles inland in China. That makes the development, deployment and threat posed by the DF-21D and China’s other ASBMs crucial to study. The outcome of the next great power conflict might hinge upon whether this type of missile truly is a Carrier Killer. 070647, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 78 pages

It examines the logistical miracle of the Berlin Airlift, which fed and heated a city of over two million people for almost eleven months. It is a story of alliances forged in the uncertainty of conflict, based on common interests and pragmatic convenience, alliances that would shape the twentieth century but would be betrayed for strategic or political reasons. The book is richly illustrated with photos, numerous maps and color profiles and is the first in a miniseries by this author for Helion’s Europe@War series on Cold War Berlin. 059032, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 96 pages

Cold War Berlin: An Island City Volume 2: The Berlin Wall 1950-1961

Andrew Long From the moment the DDR was formed in 1949, many of its citizens chose to leave for the West. Ulbricht’s Communist paradise could not afford to lose the skills and productivity from these workers, so he proposed a radical solution – physically stop them leaving by fencing in the whole population. His plan would fortify the Inner German Border from the Baltic to the Czech border and would build a Wall around West Berlin to stop the flow of East German refugees to the West. This book explores the background to this monumental decision, reviewing the dramatic geo-political developments of the 1950s and early 1960s as international tensions threatened the post-war peace, and is accompanied by numerous photos, maps, diagrams, and illustrations. 377105, $29.95 , $19.50 , Paperback, 104 pages

Michael Claringbould Peter Ingman

Volume Four chronicles aerial warfare in the South Pacific in the critical period between 19 June and 8 September 1942. It can be read alone or as a continuation of the first three volumes that spanned the first six months of the Pacific War, culminating in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Unlike the previous three volumes, no aircraft carriers appeared in New Guinea waters. Instead, the air war was fought solely by land-based air units. This was in the face of an increasingly complex strategic situation that saw the Japanese land at both Buna and Milne Bay. Never before has this campaign been chronicled in such detail, with Allied accounts matched against Japanese records for a truly factual account of the conflict. 665977, $48.95 , $31.99 , Paperback, 200 pages

PZL P.11 C

Albatros D.III/D.V Aces’ Fighter

Grzegorz Szymanowski Robert Wasik If you were to ask about the symbolic aircraft of the desperate defense of Polish sky during the tragic month of September ’39, without any doubt the answer should be one – the PZL P.11c. Although older machines (PZL P.7a and P.11a) fought next to it, the mentioned variant was a true backbone of the defense force. Pilots liked P.11c but in all publications it is described as “obsolete.” It was the penultimate stage in the evolution of a long line of fighter planes, no longer having the disadvantages of the “infant period,” but also actually constituting a closed alley in the evolution of this type of design. The PZL P.11g modification showed that the already mature construction can only be improved to a small extent. 673649, $51.95 , $33.99 , Paperback, 204 pages

This volume covers the many variations of Royal Navy wartime escort destroyers, both the purpose-built ‘Hunt’ class and the conversions from older fleet destroyers. The ‘Hunts’ were built in four groups (Types I to IV), while the old ‘V&W’ classes were modified to Long Range Escort, Short Range Escort and ‘Wair’ (anti-aircraft) variants. Also included are the fifty ex-US ‘flush-deckers’ that became the ‘Town’ class. 08175A, $28.95 , $18.99 , Paperback, 64 pages

They were easy to assemble, operate and maintain, and their versatility allowed them to fulfill a variety of purposes. This volume in Pen & Sword’s LandCraft series traces the design, development and manufacturing history of the M2/M3 and describes its operational role within the Allied armies. 746559, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 64 pages

Panther Tanks Germany Army and Waffen SS, Normandy Campaign 1944

Dennis Oliver Central to the German strategy of dealing with an Allied landing in France was the availability of a strong, mobile armored reserve. In June 1944, the Army in the West was able to deploy over 300 Panther tanks, perhaps the best armored fighting vehicle produced by Germany during the Second World War. British and American tank crews found to their horror that the Panthers could often survive numerous hits while a single round from one of their 75mm guns was enough to destroy any enemy tank. In this book, Dennis Oliver uses archive photographs to examine the part these powerful tanks played in the Normandy battles and also the battalions that operated them. 710932, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 64 pages

Jagdpanzer IV German Army and Waffen-SS Tank Destroyers Western Front, 1944– 1945

Here, Dennis Oliver uses contemporary photographs and meticulously researched, superbly presented color and monochrome illustrations to tell the story of these selfpropelled anti-tank guns and the units which operated them in the German defense of the Western Front. As with all the books in the TankCraft series, a large part of this work showcases available model kits and after-market products, complemented by a gallery of expertly constructed and painted models. 771674, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 64 pages
