Nations in the Balance The India-Burma Campaigns, December 1943–August 1944

Christopher L Kolakowski From December 1943 to August 1944, Allied and Japanese forces fought the decisive battles of World War II in Southeast Asia. Fighting centered around North Burma, Imphal, Kohima and the Arakan, involving troops from all over the world along a battlefront the combined size of Pennsylvania and Ohio. The campaigns brought nations into collision for the highest stakes: British and Indian troops fighting for Empire, the Indo-Japanese forces seeking a prestige victory with an invasion of India and the Americans and Chinese focused on helping China and reopening the Burma Road. Events turned on the decisions of the principal commanders—Admiral Louis Mountbatten and Generals Joseph Stilwell, William Slim, Orde Wingate, Mutaguchi Renya, among many others. The impact of the fighting was felt in London, Tokyo and Washington, among other places far away from the battlefront, with effects that presaged postwar political relationships. This was also the first U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia, and Stilwell’s operations in some ways foreshadowed battles in Vietnam two decades later. The Burma and India battles of 1944 offer dramatic and compelling stories of people fighting in difficult conditions against high odds, with far-reaching results. They also proved important to the postwar future of the participant nations and Asia as a whole, with effects that still reverberate decades after the war. 240961, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 240 pages

Twice torpedoed during the Battle of the Atlantic, LT. Tony Colombo USNR, a former merchant marine officer, is appointed to command a new Navy ship, PC-450, a 173 foot, steel-hulled and much advanced submarine chaser carrying five officers and sixty-five men. Tony suddenly finds himself escorting ships loaded with Marine Corps equipment all the way to Wellington, New Zealand and then to Brisbane, Australia. Once arrived, he is instantly ordered to begin escorting small convoys up and down the Australian coast. Some weeks later, Tony and PC-450 engage in battle with a dangerous Japanese midget submarine which is attempting to penetrate Brisbane Harbor. The United States suddenly invades Guadalcanal with the result that Tony begins guiding convoys north in support of the invasion while fending off the multiple day and night air raids that the Japanese throw down The Slot. PC-450 participates in the invasion of the Russell Islands and then, during the grinding fight for New Georgia. 241623, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 288 pages The front cover image is from The Paras in Iraq: Operation Telic 1 by Craig Allen, Key Publishing, 2020 (page 48) Typeset by Courtney Huntzinger

Red Bull - A History of the 34th Infantry Division in World War II Volume 1: From Mobilization to Victory in Tunisia

Robert Noel Stokes Jr The Division comes to life through a narrative based on original papers, declassified documents, and personal accounts of the soldiers themselves as they changed from green troops to veteran destroyers of the Third Reich. With constant focus on what happened to the men on the battle line, this book vividly sets forth major battles and little-known events of the Red Bull’s brutal introduction to war and its heroic metamorphosis into an effective combat organization, within the context of Allied strategy and leadership. 240466, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 560 pages

The Day Rommel Was Stopped The Battle of Ruweisat Ridge, 2 July 1942 Major F. R. Jephson MC TD Chris Jephson

George VI’s biographer, Sir John Wheeler Bennett wrote “The actual turning of the tide in the 2nd World War may be accurately determined as the first week of July 1942.” This book argues that it is possible to be even more exact: the tide turned at about 21.00 hrs. on 2 July 1942, when Rommel’s tanks withdrew for the first time since the fall of Tobruk on 20 June, or arguably since 14 January 1942 at El Agheila. If Robcol had failed, it is doubtful that Rommel would have stopped at the canal; it does not require much imagination to see his forces threatening to link up with Barbarossa in the Ukraine. This vivid account of the battle of Ruweisat Ridge, the beginning of the battle of Alamein, was written by an officer who was part of Robcol on the fateful day. 241272, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 304 pages

The Silent Service in World War II The Story of the U.S. Navy Submarine Force in the Words of the Men Who Lived It Michael Green Edward Monroe-Jones

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, the U.S. Navy had a total of 111 submarines, mostly a collection of aging boats from the late teens and early twenties, with only a few of the newer, more modern Gato-class boats. Fortunately, with the war in Europe was already two years old and friction with Japan ever-increasing, help from what would become known as the Silent Service in the Pacific was on the way: there were 73 of the new fleet submarines under construction. This book takes you through the war as you learn what it was like to serve on submarines in combat, the exhilaration of a successful attack, and the terror of being depth-charged. From early war patrols in obsolescent, unreliable S-boats to new, modern fleet submarines roving the Pacific, the forty-six stories in this anthology give you a full understanding of what it was like to be a U.S. Navy submariner in combat. 241265, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 264 pages

• NEW FROM CASEMATE • 7 Seconds to Die A Military Analysis of the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War and the Future of Warfighting Col. John F Antal (Ret). Dr Alexander Kott

The Second Nagorno-Karabakh war—fought between Armenia and Azerbaijan between September 24 and November 10, 2020—was the first war in history won primarily by unmanned systems. This 44-day war resulted in a decisive military victory for Azerbaijan. Armenia was outfought, outnumbered, and outspent and lost even though they controlled the high ground in a mountainous region that favored traditional defense. Azerbaijan’s alliance with Turkey, and close technological support from Israel, strategically isolated Armenia. In addition, Turkey’s posturing influenced the Russians not to intervene to support Armenia. That Azerbaijan attacked Armenia during the pandemic was an additional factor. The fact that Azerbaijan won the war is not extraordinary, considering the correlation of forces arrayed against Armenia. What is exceptional is that this was the first modern war primarily decided by unmanned weapons. In this war the Turkish-made BAYRAKTAR TB2 Unmanned Air Combat Vehicle (UCAV) and the Israeli-made HAROP Loitering Munition (LM) dominated the fighting and provided Azerbaijan with a war-winning advantage. 241234, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 160 pages

America’s War in Syria Fighting with Kurdish Anti-ISIS Forces Dr Till Paasche John Foxx

With America’s War on Terror and the subsequent democracy experiments in Afghanistan and Iraq having turned into geopolitical disasters, the US military campaign in alliance with the Kurdish forces in Syria remains a rare success story. Considering the overwhelming military victory, the functioning Kurdish civilian governing structures that followed the fighting, the extremely light military footprint, and the strong link to Kurdish partners, many political analysts, military experts, and politicians judge the intervention against ISIS in Syria as the nation’s most successful campaign since WWII. The authors, however, were there for over two years with the Kurdish forces, between them participating in all the large Kurdish operations against the Islamic State between late 2014 and mid-2016. Based on the authors’ unique insights, this book analyses America’s war in Syria and structures the intervention into different phases including the secretive build up and the ultimate destruction of the ISIS Caliphate. 241524, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 304 pages

Hell in the Streets of Husaybah The April 2004 Fights of 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Husaybah, Iraq

Lt Col David E Kelly USMC (Ret) During the April 2004 fights throughout Iraq, most media attention was focused on the city of Fallujah. However, at the same time, out on the border with Syria in and around the city of Husaybah, fighting was equally intense. This book tells the story of that period through many first-person accounts of intense fighting in the town of Husaybah, Iraq, during. It is based on interviews with Marines at all levels of the fight, from battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Matt Lopez, USMC, to infantrymen and squad leaders. When the Lima Company commander Captain Richard Gannon (Call sign Lima 6) was killed on entry to an enemy-held building, the company’s executive officer, Lieutenant Dominique Neal (Lima 5) informed his Marines that he had assumed command with the radio message, “Lima 5 is now Lima 6.” It also details the heroic actions of Corporal Jason Dunham who saved the Marines around him by covering an enemy grenade with his body. 241500, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 200 pages

Echo Among Warriors Close Combat in the Jungle of Vietnam Richard Camp In war, every action has a beginning and an end.

Echo Among Warriors is a story of close combat between two opposing, equally committed adversaries. The powerful narrative immerses the reader in both sides of the battle, playing and replaying the same battle sequence from alternating viewpoints—through the eyes of the Marines and through the eyes of the North Vietnamese. The bullet fired from a Marine’s M-16 at a silhouetted enemy solider crouched on the jungle path will in the next chapter tear into the flesh of that crouched NVA trooper. The story—unfolding from the initial contact to the final horrific ending—represents just one of perhaps thousands of deadly encounters that reflect the reality of battle—a mind-numbing, intensely personal experience that forever changes the participant. 240343, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 288 pages

• NEW FROM CASEMATE • James Montgomery Abolitionist Warrior

Robert C Conner James Montgomery was a leader of the free-state movement in pre-Civil War Kansas and Missouri, associated with its direct-action military wing. He then joined the Union Army and fought through most of the war. A close associate and ally of other abolitionists including John Brown, Harriet Tubman, Colonels Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and Robert G. Shaw, Montgomery led his African-American regiment along with Tubman and other civilians in the 1863 Combahee River raid, which freed almost 800 slaves from South Carolina plantations. He then commanded a brigade in the siege of Fort Wagner, near Charleston. This is the first published biography of Montgomery, who was and remains a controversial figure. It uncovers and deals honestly with his serious flaws, while debunking some wilder charges, and also bringing to light his considerable attributes and achievements. Montgomery’s life, from birth to death, is seen in the necessary perspective and clear delineation of the complex racial, political and military history of the Civil War era. 241425, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 240 pages

General Gordon Granger The Savior of Chickamauga and the Man Behind “Juneteenth”

Robert C Conner This is the first full-length biography of the Civil War general who saved the Union army from catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Chickamauga, and went on to play major roles in the Chattanooga and Mobile campaigns. Immediately after the war, as commander of U.S. troops in Texas, his actions sparked the “Juneteenth” celebrations of slavery’s end, which continue to this day. This long-overdue biography sheds fascinating new light on a colorful commander who fought through the war in the West from its first major battles to its last, and even left his impact on the Reconstruction beyond. 241302, $24.95, $16.50, Paperback, 264 pages

Lieutenant General James Longstreet and Innovative Military Strategy in the Civil War The Most Misunderstood Civil War General

F. Gregory Toretta Lieutenant-General James Longstreet, commander of the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, was a brilliant tactician and strategist. Prior to the Civil War there were many technological developments, including the rifled musket and cannon, rail transport, and the telegraph. In addition, the North enjoyed a great advantage in manpower and resources. In contrast to many other southern generals, Longstreet advocated for defensive warfare, using entrenchments, and trying to maneuver the enemy to assault his position, conserving manpower, resources, and supplies. Unfortunately, his advice was not heeded. He was a pragmatic and methodical general and had his suggestions been utilized there would have been a better outcome for the South, as no others did made the leap to this new style of fighting, including Robert E. Lee, “Stonewall” Jackson, Bragg, Hood, and Jefferson Davis.. Many historians and biographers have misunderstood Longstreet and his motives, not focusing on the total picture. This work offers a fresh and unique perspective on Lieutenant-General James Longstreet and the Civil War. 241173, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 304 pages

Captain Louis Young, aide-to-camp to Confederate General James Pettigrew, is fighting to preserve a culture and a lifestyle. The defeat at Gettysburg, the horrendous condition of the army, and the endless resources of the enemy are causing him to doubt the ability of the Confederacy to gain another major victory and thus independence. Colonel George Gray, an Irishman, is colonel of the Sixth Michigan Cavalry. He is hell-bent on putting down the rebellion before it divides the country that has been so good to him. The journey ends at the Potomac River where each soldier must face the bitter realities of war. 241708, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 224 pages

• ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL• Alexander the Great’s Legacy The Decline of Macedonian Europe in the Wake of the Wars of the Successors

Mike Roberts Why was it that the Macedonian state virtually created by Phillip II and taken to the heights of epochal triumph by his son Alexander the Great became a weaker entity than it had been when the young conqueror had crossed the Hellespont? The story that unfolds explores how the unique character and the particular legacy left when Alexander died ensured that his homeland failed to gain the kind of imperial dividend that accrued to others of the world’s great Empires. Only 50 or so years later, Macedon would end in a Galatian deluge that threatened the sacred site at Delphi and had remarkable parallels to the earlier Persian invasions of the Greek world that Alexander had claimed to avenge. 788528, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 320 pages

Ancient Battle Formations

Justin Swanton Justin Swanton examines the principal battle-winning formations of the Ancient world, determining their composition, function and efficacy. An introductory chapter looks at the fundamental components of the principal battle formations of heavy and light infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariots, showing how they bolstered the individual soldier’s willingness to fight. The rest of the book focuses on massed infantry that reigned supreme in this era: the heavily armored Greek hoplite phalanx that was immune to the weaponry of its non-Greek opponents; and the Macedonian pike phalanx that was unbeatable against frontal attacks so long as it kept order. 740069, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 320 pages

A Storm of Spears Understanding the Greek Hoplite in Action

Christopher Matthew The backbone of classical Greek armies was the phalanx of heavily armored spearmen, or hoplites. For around two centuries they were the dominant soldiers of the Classical world. Yet there are still many aspects of hoplite warfare that are little understood or the subject of fierce academic debate. Christopher Matthew’s groundbreaking reassessment combines analysis of the literary and archaeological evidence alongside the new disciplines of reconstructive archaeology, re-enactment and ballistic science. This is an innovative and refreshing reassessment of one of the most important kinds of troops in ancient warfare, sure to make a genuine contribution to the state of knowledge. 241333, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 360 pages

The Army of Alexander the Great

Stephen English Many believe Alexander the Great was the greatest military genius of all time. Most of his reign as king of Macedon was spent conquering half the known world, during which he was never defeated in open battle and never besieged a city he did not take. Yet, while biographies of Alexander abound, there are relatively few full-length books dedicated to the Macedonian army which made his dazzling conquests possible. Stephen English investigates every aspect of the Macedonian forces, drawing on recent archaeological evidence and scholarship to present a detailed portrait of the army which demonstrated a superiority over its opponents and proved itself the most formidable machine of the age. 013864, $26.95, $17.99, Paperback, 176 pages

Religion & Classical Warfare Archaic and Classical Greece Christopher Matthew Matthew Dillon

Religion was integral to the conduct of war in the ancient world and the Greeks were certainly no exception. No campaign was undertaken, no battle risked, without first making sacrifice to propitiate the appropriate gods (such as Ares, god of War) or consulting oracles and omens to divine their plans. Yet the link between war and religion is an area that has been regularly overlooked by modern scholars examining the conflicts of these times. This volume addresses that omission by drawing together the work of experts from across the globe. 834293, $50, $32.50, Hardback, 320 pages

Fields of Death Retracing Ancient Battlefields

Richard Evans Richard Evans revisits the sites of a selection of Greek and Roman battles and sieges to seek new insights. By combining the ancient sources and latest archaeological findings with his personal observations on the ground, Richard Evans brings new perspectives to the dramatic events of the distant past. The author has carefully selected battles and sieges to explore, first to identify their locations and see how these fit with the ancient evidence. He then examines the historical episodes themselves, offering new observations from firsthand study of the field of battle along with up-to-date photographs, maps and diagrams. 847972, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 256 pages

BATTLE OF THE BULGE • ••ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL• Great Battles of the Classical Greek World

Great Battles of the Hellenistic World

Owen Rees This book presents a selection of eighteen land battles and sieges that span the Classical Greek period, from the Persian invasions to the eclipse of the traditional hoplite heavy infantry at the hands of the Macedonians. This is the golden age of the hoplite phalanx but Owen Rees is keen to cover all aspects of battle, including mercenary armies and the rise of light infantry, emphasizing the variety and tactical developments across the period. Each battle is set in context with a brief background, then the battlefield and opposing forces are discussed before the narrative and analysis of the fighting is given and rounded off with consideration of the aftermath and strategic implications. 827295, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 304 pages

Joseph Pietrykowski For almost two centuries the Macedonian phalanx, created by Philip II and refined by his son, Alexander the Great, dominated the battlefields of the ancient world. As the preferred weapon of some of antiquity’s greatest commanders, this powerful military system took center stage in many of the largest and most decisive conflicts of ancient times. In Great Battles of the Hellenistic World, Joseph Pietrykowski explores the struggles that shook the ancient world and shaped history. From the structure and composition of the opposing armies, to the strategy of their campaigns, Great Battles of the Hellenistic World examines seventeen landmark conflicts. 846883, $24.95, $16.50, Paperback, 256 pages

The Battles of Antiochus the Great The failure of combined arms at Magnesia that handed the world to Rome

Ancient Greeks at War Warfare in the Classical World from Agamemnon to Alexander

Graham Wrightson As king of the Seleucid Empire, Antiochus III won many battles, and lost almost as many. Compared with most of the other Hellenistic monarchs he had a greater variety of units that he could field in his army yet repeatedly came up short on the battlefield. His tactical shortcomings were no more obviously laid bare than at the Battle of Magnesia-ad-Sipylum where his combined army, one of the largest ever fielded by Hellenistic rulers, was soundly thrashed by the smaller Roman force. Through analysis of the army and the three main battles of Antiochus, this book will show how it was his failure to utilize combined arms at its fullest realization that led to such a world-changing defeat. 793461, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 184 pages

Armies of Ancient Greece Circa 500 to 338 BC History, Organization & Equipment

Gabriele Esposito Conflict was rife among the Greeks of the Classical period, including some of the most famous wars and battles of the whole ancient period, such as the defeat of the Persians at Marathon, the Spartans’ heroic last stand at Thermopylae, the gruelling Pelopponesian War and the epic March of the Ten Thousand. Covering the period from the Persian Wars to the Macedonian victory at the Battle of Chaeronea, Gabriele Esposito examines not only the hoplites but also the other troops that featured in Greek armies with growing importance as time went on. 751898, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 224 pages

The Rise of the Seleukid Empire (323223 BC) Seleukos I to Seleukos III

John D. Grainger The Seleukid kingdom was the largest state in the world between Alexander’s death and the rise of Rome. It was ruled by a succession of able kings but broke down twice before eventually succumbing to dynastic rivalries, simultaneous external invasions and internal grasps for independence. The first king, Seleukos I, established a pattern of rule which was unusually friendly towards his subjects, and his policies promoted the steady growth of wealth and population in many areas which had been depopulated when he took them over. The dynasty was active in founding cities from Asia Minor to Central Asia and set the social and economic scene of the Middle East for many centuries to come. 743763, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 256 pages

Military History of Late Rome 425–457

Ilkka Syvänne The Military History of Late Rome 425-457 analyses in great detail how the Romans coped with the challenge posed by masses of Huns in a situation in which the Germanic tribes had gained a permanent foothold in the territories of West Rome. This analysis reassesses the strategy and tactics of the period and shows how cooperation between the West Roman Master of Soldiers, Aetius, and East Roman Emperor Marcian saved Western civilization from the Huns of Attila. A fresh appraisal of the great clash at the Catalaunian Fields in 451 offers new insights into the mechanics of the fighting and shows that it was a true battle of nations which decided nothing less than the fate of human civilization. 848535, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 272 pages

Leading the Roman Army Soldiers and Emperors, 31 BC – 235 AD

Jonathan Mark Eaton The Roman imperial army represented one of the main factors in the exercise of political control by the emperors. The effective political management of the army was essential for maintaining the safety and well-being of the empire as a whole. This book analyzes the means by which emperors controlled their soldiers and sustained their allegiance from the battle of Actium in 31 BC, to the demise of the Severan dynasty in AD 235. Recent discoveries have revolutionized our understanding of the Roman army. This study provides an up to date synthesis of a range of evidence from archaeological, epigraphic, literary and numismatic sources on the relationship between the emperor and his soldiers. 855632, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 216 pages

Rome’s Sicilian Slave Wars The Revolts of Eunus and Salvius, 136-132 and 105-100 BC

Natale Barca In 136 BC, in Sicily (which was then a Roman province), some four hundred slaves of Syrian origin rebelled against their masters and seized the city of Henna with much bloodshed. Their leader, a fortune-teller named Eunus, was declared king (taking the Syrian royal name Antiochus), and tens of thousands of runaway slaves as well as poor native Sicilians soon flocked to join his fledgling kingdom. Antiochus’ ambition was to drive the Romans from the whole of Sicily. The Romans responded with characteristic intransigence and relentlessness, leading to years of brutal warfare and suppression. 767462, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 256 pages

Limits of Empire Rome’s Borders Simon Forty Jonathan Forty

The borders of the Roman Empire were frontiers that were often wild and dangerous. They were a mix of defensive bulwarks, but also control areas where import and export taxes were levied, and entrance was controlled. This book examines these frontiers of the empire, looking at the way they were constructed and manned and how that changed over the years. It looks at the physical barriers – from the walls in Britain to the Fossatum Africae in the desert. It looks at the way that civil settlements grew up around the forts and what life was like for soldiers, sailors and civilians. The book also provides a guidebook to top Roman museums and a gazetteer of visitable sites. 240763, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 200 pages

• ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL• Rome, Blood and Politics Reform, Murder and Popular Politics in the Late Republic 133-70 BC

Gareth C Sampson The last century of the Roman Republic saw the consensus of the ruling elite shattered by a series of high-profile politicians who proposed political or social reform programs, many of which culminated in acts of bloodshed on the streets of Rome itself. This began in 133 BC with the military recruitment reforms of Tiberius Gracchus, which saw him and his supporters lynched by a mob of angry Senators. Covering the period 133 - 70 BC, this volume analyzes each of the key reformers, what they were trying to achieve and how they met their end, narrating the long decline of the Roman Republic into anarchy and civil war. 887329, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 304 pages

The Battle of Actium 31 BC War for the World

Lee Fratantuono A good argument could be made that the Battle of Actium was the most significant military engagement in Roman history. The victory Octavian enjoyed that day set the state for fortyfour years of what would come to be known as the Augustan Peace, and was the dawn of the Roman Empire. Yet, what exactly happened at Actium has been a mystery. Professor Lee Fratantuono re-examines the ancient evidence and presents a compelling and solidly documented account of what took place in the waters off the promontory of Leucas in late August and early September of 31 BC. 847149, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 232 pages

Pertinax The Son of a Slave Who Became Roman Emperor

Simon Elliott The son of a former slave, Pertinax was the Roman Emperor who proved that no matter how lowly your birth, you could rise to the very top through hard work, grit and determination. This previously untold story brings a fascinating and important figure out of the shadows. A self made everyman, a man of principle and ambition, a role model respected by his contemporaries who styled himself on his philosophizing predecessor and sometime champion Marcus Aurelius, Pertinax’s remarkable story offers a unique and panoramic insight into the late 2nd century AD Principate Empire. 385255, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 224 pages

Lucullus The Life and Campaigns of a Roman Conqueror

Lee Fratantuono Lee Frantantuono considers every aspect of Lucullus life, starting with the training and education of a future Roman officer, but the greatest emphasis is on his military strategy and tactics during the Third Mithridatic War and his military adventures in Armenia. His most famous achievement was his victory against immense odds at the land battle of Tigranocerta. Lucullus complicated relationship with Sulla and Crassus is explored and the study concludes with the retirement of the man Pliny the Elder memorably referred to as ‘Xerxes in a Toga’, a patron of the arts and master of a life of horticulture and reflection. 883611, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 208 pages

Rome, Parthia and India The Violent Emergence of a New World Order 150-140 BC

John D. Grainger Between 152 and 138 BC a series of wars from Africa to India produced a radically new geopolitical situation. In 150 Rome was confined to the western Mediterranean, and the largest state was the Seleukid Empire. By 140 Rome had spread to the borders of Asia Minor and the Seleukid Empire was confined to Syria. The new great power in the Middle East was Parthia, stretching from Babylonia to Baktria. These two divided the western world between them until the Arab conquests in the seventh century AD. 848252, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 256 pages

• ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL• • CHURCHILL’S 145TH • Carthage’s Other Wars Carthaginian Warfare Outside the ‘Punic Wars’ Against Rome

Dexter Hoyos Although characterized in the surviving sources and modern studies as a predominantly mercantile state, Carthage fought many wars, both aggressive and defensive, before and in between the contests with the Roman parvenus. The Greek states of Sicily, above all Syracuse under its tyrants Dionysius the Great and then Agathocles, were her most resolute opponents, but in North Africa itself, in Sardinia, and later on in Spain she won—and sometimes lost—major wars. This is the first full-length study dedicated to these other wars which furthered Carthage’s interests for over half a millennium. 593578, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 256 pages

Masada Mass Suicide in the First Jewish-Roman War, c. AD 73

Phil Carradice In 73 AD the rock fortress of Masada was the site of an event that was breathtaking in its courage and self-sacrifice. Here the last of the Jewish Zealots who had waged war against the Roman occupiers made their last stand. The Zealots on Masada had withstood a two-year siege but with Roman victory assured, they were faced by two options: capture or death. When the Roman legions forced their way into the hill fort they were met with only silence and rows of bodies. Rather than fall into enemy hands the 960 men, women and children in Masada had committed suicide. The story has gone down in Israeli and Jewish folklore, but is little known elsewhere and it is time to redress the balance. 72897A, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 128 pages

The Galatians Celtic Invaders of Greece and Asia Minor

John D. Grainger The eastern Celtic tribes, known to the Greeks as Galatians, exploited the waning of Macedonian power after Alexander the Great’s death to launch increasingly ambitious raids and expeditions into the Balkans. In 279 BC they launched a major invasion, defeating and beheading the Macedonian king, Ptolemy Keraunos, before sacking the Greeks’ most sacred oracle at Delphi. Eventually forced to withdraw northwards, they were defeated by Antigonus Gonatus at Lysimachia in 277 BC but remained a threat. 770684, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 256 pages

Anna Komnene and the Alexiad The Byzantine Princess and the First Crusade

Loulia Kolovou Anna Komnene is one of the most curious figures in the history of an intriguing empire. A woman of extraordinary education and intellect, she was the only Byzantine female historian and one of the first historians in medieval Europe. Subsequent historians have skewed the picture of Anna as an intellectual princess and powerful author. She has been largely viewed as an angry, bitter old woman; accusations of conspiracy and attempted murder were hurled at her and as punishment she was to live the last of her days in exile. It was during her time in a convent that she composed the Alexiad, the history of the First Crusade and the Byzantine Emperor, Alexios I Komnenos, her father. 733016, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 272 pages

The Komnene Dynasty Byzantium’s Struggle for Survival 1057–1185

John Carr The 128-year dynasty of the Komneni was the last great epoch of Byzantium. Though the dynasty ended in cruelty and incompetence, it fought a valiant rear-guard action in keeping eastern Christendom alive. The Komnene dynasty saw several changes in Byzantine military practice, such as the adoption of heavy cavalry on the western model, the extensive use of foreign mercenaries and the neglect of the navy. A chapter is devoted to the famous Varangian Guard, which included many Saxons in exile following the Norman conquest of England. The terrible defeat at Myriokephalon in 1176 sealed the dynasty’s fate, preparing the way for the conquest of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusaders. 702296, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 240 pages

Women at War in the Classical World

Paul Chrystal Paul Chrystal has written the first full length study of women and warfare in the Graeco Roman world. Although the conduct of war was generally monopolized by men, there were plenty of exceptions with women directly involved in its direction and even as combatants. More commonly, of course, women were directly affected by war as noncombatant victims of rape and enslavement as spoils of war and this makes up an important strand of the author’s discussion. The portrayal of female warriors and goddesses in classical mythology and literature, and the use of war to justify gender roles and hierarchies, are also considered. 781468, $26.95, $17.99, Paperback, 272 pages

Chris Peers In the field of military history as in so many others, the Chinese have often been both admired and seen as something utterly mysterious and inscrutable. Chris Peers illuminates the evolution of the military art in China with reference to ten battles, spanning more than 2,000 years, from the Battle of Mu in 1027BC to the Fall of Chung Tu in 1215AD. Keith Coleman This is the first full-length work devoted to Áedán mac Gabráin, 6th century king of Dál Riata in Scotland. An associate of the famous St. Columba, he was the first recorded king to be ordained in the British Isles and was the most powerful ruler in his generation. This book details his dominant career, which came to a shattering end after decades of warfare at the Battle of Degsaston in AD 603. There is also a unique and tantalizing accumulation of legend concerning Áedán. He is one of the few Gaelic kings to feature prominently in Welsh tradition, and modern writers highlight Áedán as the father of a prince named Arthur, which has led to his place in Arthurian studies. 794901, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 208 pages

Medieval Military Medicine From the Vikings to the High Middle Ages

Brian Burfield Soldiers of the Middle Ages faced many perils in war, from blades that could slice through flesh, arrows that could puncture armor, and more. These casualties of war are the focus of Brian Burfield’s study, but they represent just a portion of the story – disease, disability, disfigurement, damaged minds all played their roles in this awful reality. His account features many individual cases, extracting their stories from chronicles, miracle collections, surgeries, government records and other documents. The literature of the period are also of great value in bringing these cases to life, as is the evidence provided by modern archaeological and historical scholarship. 754745, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 224 pages

In a world of few roads and great disorder, the sea is the medium on which power is projected and wealth sought. Charles Stanton uses an innovative and involving approach to describe this fascinating but neglected facet of European medieval history. 782199, $34.95, $22.99, Paperback, 368 pages

Bosworth The Archaeology of the Battlefield

Richard Mackinder The Wars of the Roses came to a bloody climax at the Battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485. This decisive moment in English history ought to be clearly recorded and understood, yet controversy has confused our understanding of where and how the battle was fought. That is why Richard Mackinder’s highly illustrated and personal account of the search for evidence is such absorbing reading. He shows how archaeological evidence, discovered by painstaking work on the ground, has put this historic battle into the modern landscape. A vivid impression of the battle emerges from his narrative which is closely linked to the landscape that was fought over on that fateful day. 010528, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 232 pages

The Long War for Britannia 367–664 Arthur and the History of Post-Roman Britain

After a decade in exile, he regained power through a coup d’etat with the backing of the erstwhile Bulgar enemy. His reign saw developments in numismatics, administration, finance and architecture, but he was deposed a second time in 711 and beheaded. • 17TH & 18TH CENTURY • In the Midst of the Kingdom The Royalist War Effort in the North Midlands, 1642-1646

Martyn Bennett This book is the first study to reassess the nature of the royalist cause in the North midland counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, and Staffordshire during the first civil war (1642-1646). Previous studies have been heavily dependent on parliamentarian accounts, which were not written to create a thorough narrative of the war, but to demonize the royalists and their cause. Examination of a wider range of information showed that the royalists had a regional command structure which exploited the resources of the region. However, there were several problems, such as internal rivalries, divided commanders, and interference of the king. 118891, $49.95, $32.50, Paperback, 290 pages

The Colonial Ironsides English Expeditions under the Commonwealth and Protectorate, 1650 – 1660

Jonathon Riley The Colonial Ironsides is a comprehensive survey of the role played by Oliver Cromwell’s expeditionary forces in subduing Royalist outposts abroad after the conclusion of the Civil Wars in the Three Kingdoms, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, the Scillies, the West Indies and North America. The book details the launch of the Western Design against Spain in the Caribbean, and the role of Cromwell’s expeditionary brigade, and Charles II’s army in exile, in the struggle between France and Spain during the last years of the Protectorate. This decade of early expeditionary warfare marked a change in English foreign policy from raiding the colonies of others to becoming an imperial power. 070371, $59.95, $38.99, Paperback, 386 pages

No Armour But Courage Colonel Sir George Lisle 1615-1648

Serena Jones Few army officers of King Charles I shone as bright as George Lisle during the English Civil Wars, yet have drawn so little attention from subsequent historians. In this first ever biography of Lisle, the author has scoured dozens of primary sources for fragmentary references - painstakingly piecing together his personal background and re-examining every known detail of his career. The accuracy of existing stories and long-held assumptions about him is investigated minutely, and the first well-informed assessments made of his character and motives. Finally, the persistent memory of his execution is traced forwards through later writers and painters into the 20th century. 059575, $50, $32.50, Paperback, 508 pages

Canon Played the Great Fort Sieges in the Severn Valley during the English Civil War 1642-1646

Richard Israel The battlefields of Edgehill, Newbury, and Marston Moor are superlatives with the conflict known as the English Civil War, and while their importance to the conflict is undeniable, they detract from the power struggle that occurred between the Royalists and Parliamentarians. This power struggle culminated in the construction of siege batteries and fortifications. Focusing on the Severn Valley region of England, this book examines, through archaeological, topographic, cartographic and historical research, the sieges of Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester, Bridgnorth, and Shrewsbury, demonstrating how siege techniques and this style of warfare impacted the outcome of the conflict. 336509, $37.50, $24.50, Paperback, 166 pages

This is the second of a two book that series that describes the military campaign from late 1655 until 1660. Utilizing numerous English and Spanish sources, it also puts the events that occurred in the West Indies into context with the wider European political situation and explains how the war spread to Europe. The King’s Irish The Royalist Anglo-Irish Foot of the English Civil War

Warwick Louth Military manuals have been used as a source through a range of historical studies, but only recently has their potential to Conflict Archaeology truly been recognized. Military manuals allowed the progression of the Military Revolution from the informed amateur towards the scientific, mathematical choreography for massed troops at the height of the Military Revolution, and their use as a viable historical resource often taken at face value - negating their worth. Using correlated GIS, landscape archaeology, metal detecting, military knowledge and experimental archaeology, we might understand more fully the limitations and strengths drill books provide us. 096221, $39.95, $25.99, Paperback, 148 pages

John Barratt The English troops serving in Ireland were vital source of experienced and possibly warwinning manpower sought after by both King and Parliament in the Civil War. The “cessation” or truce which King Charles reached with the Irish Confederates in September 1643 enabled him to begin shipping over troops from Ireland to reinforce the Royalist armies. During the following year the “Irish,” as they were frequently known were an important factor in the war. The Nantwich campaign, the consolidation of Royalist control in the Welsh Marches during the spring of 1644, the Marston Moor campaign, and the Battle of Montgomery all received major contributions from the troops from Ireland. 866533, $32.95, $21.50, Paperback, 214 pages

This book tells the story of the two armies: Charles II’s polyglot army of Irish, Scottish and English soldiers -and the expeditionary force dispatched by Cromwell to assist his French allies, with the objective of securing Dunkirk as an English possession. The book, the first detailed study in English, will relate how the two armies were raised and equipped; the commanders and their colorful personalities; and the lives of the soldiers and their campaigns. 777725, $49.95, $32.50, Paperback, 136 pages

••17TH & 18TH CENTURY •• ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL James II and the First Modern Revolution The End of Absolute Monarchy

John Van Der Kiste In February 1685, James II succeeded his brother Charles II on the English throne. During a period of less than forty years that had seen the execution of their father, Charles I, the proclamation of a republic, and restoration of the monarchy a few years later, nothing could be taken for granted, but the omens for a reign of stability seemed good. This book examines how the forces of Anglicanism and Jacobitism collided, how a monarch came to forfeit so much goodwill so quickly, and through his own folly aided the effortless victory those who replaced him on the throne and at last brought a period of calm to a country that had only recently endured civil war and years of upheaval. 001403, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 224 pages

Captain John Smith, Adventurer Piracy, Pocahontas and Jamestown

R E Pritchard Captain John Smith is best remembered for his association with Pocahontas, but this was only a small part of an extraordinary life filled with danger and adventure. As a soldier, he fought the Turks in Eastern Europe, where he beheaded three Turkish adversaries in duels. He was sold into slavery, then murdered his master to escape. He sailed under a pirate flag, was shipwrecked and marched to the gallows to be hanged, only to be reprieved at the eleventh hour. All this before he was thirty years old. This swashbuckling Elizabethan adventurer was resourceful, intelligent and outspoken, with a vision of what America could become. 001533, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 208 pages

Charles I’s Executioners Civil War, Regicide and the Republic

James Hobson On an icy winter’s day in January 1649, a unique event in English history took place: Charles I, King of England, was executed. Regicide, a onceunfathomable act, formed the basis of the Commonwealth’s new dawn. The killers of the king were soldiers, lawyers, Puritans, Republicans and some simply opportunists, all brought together under one infamous banner. While the events surrounding Charles I and Cromwell are well-trodden, the lives of the other fifty-eight men – their backgrounds, ideals and motives – has been sorely neglected. This is their shocking story: the ideals that united them, and the decision that unmade them. 761842, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 224 pages

He narrates in detail the events following the exiled King Charles II’s landing in Scotland and his alliance with the Scots Covenanters. Cromwell’s preemptive invasion of Scotland led to the Battle of Dunbar, a crushing defeat for the Scots. Cromwell caught up with Charles II at Worcester, where the Scots/Royalist army was decisively defeated, thousands of the prisoners being sold into slavery in the colonies. This revised and updated edition contains an expanded chapter on the aftermath of the war and the fate of the POWs. 786500, $39.95 , $25.99 , Hardback, 176 pages

Parliament’s Generals Supreme Command and Politics During the British Wars 1642-51

Malcolm Wanklyn Waller, Essex, Fairfax, Manchester and Cromwell are among the most famous military men who fought for Parliament during the English Civil War. While their performance as generals has been explored in numerous books on the campaigns, comparatively little has been written by military historians about the political aspects of high command, namely the ever-changing and often fractious relationship with the English Parliament and its executive committees. That is why Malcolm Wanklyn’s study of these men is of such value, for he sheds new light on the qualities they employed in their attempts to achieve their military and political aspirations. 898363, $49.95, $32.50, Hardback, 240 pages

• ANCIENT • 18TH CENTURY & MEDIEVAL • • By Fire and Bayonet Grey’s West Indies Campaign of 1794

Steve Brown There have been few books about Grey’s glorious (but ultimately ill-fated) West Indies campaign in the early years of the long and terrible wars of 1793-1815, yet five of the subalterns in Grey’s expeditionary force went on to command divisions in Wellington’s Peninsula army; another two commanded the Iron Duke’s Royal Artillery; and one (Richard Fletcher) famously - the Royal Engineers. It took many years to learn the lessons presented by the campaign, but for the young officers who survived, it provided some invaluable lessons that were put to good use 15 or 20 years later in the British Army of a later era. 070906, $42.50, $27.99, Paperback, 250 pages

Life in the Red Coat: The British Soldier 17211815 Proceedings of the 2019 Helion and Company ‘From Reason to Revolution’ Conference

Andrew Bamford The 2019 From Reason to Revolution conference took as its theme the experiences of the ordinary British soldier in the era 1721-1815, from enlistment, through service at home, to life on campaign and the experience of battle. This book presents the proceedings of that conference in full, along with an introduction by series editor Andrew Bamford. This was an era in which the social position of the soldier began to change, as did the relationship between the Army and society at large. As the idea of a social contract became embedded, it was necessary to make provision for pensions, as well as the more obvious need for medical care for the sick and wounded. 118945, $44.95, $29.50, Paperback, 198 pages

This is taken from the original edition of the journal of Comte Maurès de Malartic. Malartic sailed to the North American colony of New France in 1755. As war escalated, he remained in the colony, present at the engagements in the ‘French and Indian War’. The Secret Expedition The Anglo-Russian Invasion of Holland 1799

Geert van Uythoven In 1799, as part of the Second Coalition against France, an Anglo-Russian army landed in Holland to overthrow the Batavian Republic and to reinstate the Stadtholder William V of Orange. The description of the invasion reads like a novel: five major battles were fought between armies of four different nations, with unexpected deeds of heroism and unexpected defeats. The aim of this book is to give a balanced, detailed, and complete account of the events taking place during the invasion: the preparations on both sides, detailed descriptions of the battles as well as the events taking place at sea and in the eastern provinces of the Batavian Republic. 05913A, $44.95, $29.50, Paperback, 448 pages

Neither Up Nor Down The British Army and the Campaign in Flanders 1793-1795

Philip Ball Britain’s war against Revolutionary France is today a largely forgotten prelude to the Napoleonic Wars. The campaign in Flanders was Britain’s attempt to stem the power of the new republic as it threatened to engulf its neighbors, but it was to end in disaster. This is the first account of this intensive campaign written in modern times; chronicling the many battles as the varying fortunes of the combatants saw their armies march to and fro across the fields of Flanders. This book details the numerous major battles of the campaign and the unraveling of the First Coalition using British, French and German sources. 118907, $55, $35.99, Hardback, 432 pages

The Lilies & The Thistle French Troops in the Jacobite ‘45

Andrew Bamford The Jacobite Rising of 1745 could not have taken place without French support. French ships carried Charles Edward Stuart to Scotland, French gold financed his campaign, and French weapons equipped many of his troops. Yet the actual French military contribution to the campaign was small, and its role is frequently neglected. This book seeks to redress this balance by looking in detail at the French military contribution to the Jacobite ’45, the result is to fill an important gap in our understanding of these dramatic events, one of the last occasions that foreign troops fought on British soil. 628170, $34.95, $22.99, Paperback, 104 pages

Rob Harper In 1793 France was facing foreign invasion along its borders and a fierce political war was raging in Paris when a large-scale revolt, centered on the western Department of the Vendée, suddenly erupted, almost bringing the new-born French Republic to its knees. This is the story of the new Republic’s ferocious military campaigns against the armies of the Vendée, which fiercely defied them between March and December 1793, tying down hundreds of thousands of troops desperately needed on the frontiers. Napoleon later called it ‘The War of Giants’ and it directly led to the implementation of some of the Republic’s most extreme laws. 868960, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 400 pages

Peter the Great’s Revenge The Russian Siege of Narva in 1704

Boris Megorsky Military campaigns in the Baroque age across Europe were far more fortressoriented - field battles were few while sieges were many. Even then, Narva’s two sieges are extraordinary as they provide samples of nearly all possible siege tactics typical to the period but rarely applied to one and the same town. Telling the story of these 1700 and 1704 events thus gives us a chance to speak about the mechanism of fortification warfare, about everyday life of the besieger and the besieged, about morale, military customs of that time, and about broader context of the resolute struggle between Tsar Peter and King Charles. 628026, $49.95, $32.50, Paperback, 270 pages

Frigates, Sloops and Brigs

James Henderson Admiral Nelson’s most frequent cry was for more frigates. Though not ships of the line these fast and powerful warships were the ‘eyes of the fleet.’ They enabled admirals to find where the enemy lay, as well as patrolling vital trade routes and providing information from far-flung colonies. Together with their smaller cousins, the sloops and brigs of the Royal Navy, they performed a vital function. Generally commanded by ambitious young men, these were the ships that could capture enemy prizes and earn their officers and men enough prize-money to set them up for life. Originally published in two volumes, this book is a bargain for all who want the factual low-down on Nelson’s navy. 845268, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 384 pages

‘They Were Good Soldiers’ African–Americans Serving in the Continental Army, 1775-1783

John U. Rees The role of African-Americans, most free but some enslaved, in the regiments of the Continental Army is not well-known; neither is the fact that large numbers served in southern regiments and that the greatest number served alongside their white comrades in integrated units. ‘They Were Good Soldiers’ begins by discussing the inclusion and treatment of black Americans by the various Crown forces. The narrative then moves into an overview of black soldiers in the Continental Army and examines their service state by state. The book makes extensive use of black veterans’ pension narratives to tell their stories, and provides insights into their lives, before, during, and after the war. 62854A, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 210 pages

George Washington’s War In Caricature and Print

Kenneth Baker This was the five-year war that made America a nation. Indeed President Barack Obama referred to it in his Inaugural Address; and every American child is steeped in its history, but all too often the fog of myth shrouds the reality from all sides of the conflict. In these pages, the path to war is starkly documented by British caricatures of politicians and generals, for the most part favorable to the Colonists. Kenneth Baker has used contemporary material, not the romantic patriotic pictures of the 19th Century. He has drawn upon his own experiences of high politics, and his personal collection of caricatures, as well as the libraries and historical societies of the East Coast. 502539, $49.95, $32.50, Hardback, 224 pages

George Washington’s Nemesis The Outrageous Treason and Unfair Court-Martial of Major General Charles Lee during the Revolutionary War

Christian McBurney Revolutionary War Historians and biographers of Charles Lee have treated him as either an inveterate enemy of George Washington, or a great defender of American liberty. Neither approach is accurate. According to author Christian McBurney, absolute objectivity is required to fully understand the war’s most complicated general. McBurney’s new book, George Washington’s Nemesis, relies on original documents (some newly discovered) to combine two dramatic stories involving the military law of treason and court-martials, creating a balanced view of one of the Revolution’s most fascinating personalities. 214659, $32.95, $21.50, Hardback, 336 pages

• 19TH CENTURY • • • 17TH / 18TH CENTURY The Carnage was Fearful The Battle of Cedar Mountain, August 9, 1862

Michael E. Block In early August 1862, Confederate Maj. Gen. Stonewall Jackson took to the field with his Army of the Valley for one last fight—one that would also turn out to be his last independent command. Near the base of Cedar Mountain, in the midst of a blistering heat wave, a violent three-hour battle erupted, yielding more than 3,600 casualties. Civil War history typically breezes by the battle of Cedar Mountain, but the stand-alone battle at Cedar Mountain had major implications. Most importantly, the Federal defeat at Cedar Mountain halted an advance into central Virginia and provided Gen. Robert E. Lee an opportunity to take the fight away from Richmond and toward Washington. 214406, $16.95, $11.50, Paperback, 192 pages

Call Out the Cadets The Battle of New Market, May 15, 1864 Sarah Kay Bierle Col. Keith E. Gibson

“May God forgive me for the order,” Confederate Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge remarked as he ordered young cadets from Virginia Military Institute into the battle lines at New Market, just days after calling them from their academic studies to assist in a crucial defense. When the opposing divisions clashed near the small town of New Market on May 15, 1864 the young cadets rushed into the battle, an opportunity for an hour of glory and tragedy. Call Out the Cadets traces the history of this important, yet smaller battle. While covering the military aspects of the battle, the book also follows the history of individuals whose lives or military careers were changed because of the fight. 214697, $16.95, $11.50, Paperback, 192 pages

That Field of Blood The Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862

Out Flew the Sabres The Battle of Brandy Station, June 9, 1863 Daniel T. Davis Eric J. Wittenberg

Twelve thousand Union cavalrymen against 9,000 of their Confederate counterparts—with three thousand Union infantry thrown in for good measure. Amidst the thunder of hooves and the clashing of sabers, they slugged it out Culpepper County, Virginia. It escalated into the largest cavalry battle ever fought on the North American continent. Fleetwood Hill at Brandy Station was the site of four major cavalry battles during the course of the Civil War, but none was more important than the one fought on June 9, 1863. That clash turned out to be the opening engagement of the Gettysburg Campaign, and the one-day delay it caused may have impacted the outcome of the entire campaign. 212563, $14.95, $9.99, Paperback, 168 pages

• 17TH / 18TH CENTURY • 19TH CENTURY • • Hearts Torn Asunder Trauma in the Civil War’s Final Campaign in North Carolina

Ernest A. Dollar Jr. Most people believe the end of the Civil War came at Appomattox with handshakes and amicable banter between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant—an honorable ceremony amongst noble warriors. And so it has been remembered to this day. But the war did not end on April 9, 1865. A larger and arguably more important surrender had yet to take place in North Carolina. This part of the surrender story occupies but little space in the vast annals of Civil War literature, and as author Ernest A. Dollar Jr. ably explains in Hearts Torn Asunder: Trauma in the Civil War’s Final Campaign in North Carolina, the lens of modern science may reveal why. 215120, $32.95, $21.50, Hardback, 264 pages

Gen. John Pope’s Army of Virginia in 1862. This unique study, which blends unit history with sound leadership and character assessments, puts the XII Corps’ actions in proper context by providing significant and substantive treatment to its Confederate opponents. His extensive archival research, newspapers, and other important resources, together with detailed maps and images, offers a compelling story of a little-studied yet consequential command that fills a longstanding historiographical gap. 215779, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 408 pages

Targeted Tracks The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861-1865 Scott L. Mingus Sr. Cooper H. Wingert

The Civil War was the first conflict in which railroads played a major role. Although much has been written about the role of railroads in general, little has been written about specific lines. The Cumberland Valley Railroad played an important strategic role by connecting Hagerstown, Maryland, to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Its location was essential during some of the Civil War’s most critical campaigns. Despite the line’s significance to the Union, its remarkable story remains little known. Now available in paperback, Targeted Tracks: The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861-1865, by Scott L. Mingus Sr. and Cooper H. Wingert, rectifies that oversight. 215434, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 272 pages

Meade and Lee After Gettysburg The Forgotten Final Stage of the Gettysburg Campaign, from Falling Waters to Culpeper Court House, July 14–31, 1863

Jeffrey Wm Hunt The period of the Civil War in Virginia sandwiched between the traditional ending date of the Gettysburg Campaign and the arrival of U. S. Grant is routinely overlooked. Author Jeffrey Wm Hunt helps rectify this glaring oversight. In the first of four volumes, Hunt demonstrates that this period was full of drama as Lee and Meade sought to repair the damage done to their armies at Gettysburg, cope with an epidemic of desertions and home front disenchantment, and a host of logistical and strategic dilemmas. The Gettysburg Campaign, argues Hunt, did not end until late July, and included the fighting at Shepherdstown and Manassas Gap. 214451, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 312 pages

Thousands of books and articles examine nearly every aspect of the Civil War, but the important retreat of the armies from the Gettysburg battlefield to the Potomac River has been but little covered. Until now, no one had produced a critical analysis of the command decisions made during that fateful time based upon available intelligence. “Lee is Trapped and Must be Taken” is a sequel to Thomas Ryan’s Spies, Scouts, and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campaign. 215427, $22.95 , $14.99 , Paperback, 372 pages

Naturally, the Imperial Guard has been the subject of numerous books over many decades, yet there has never been a publication that has investigated the uniforms and equipment of the infantry of the Imperial Guard in such detail and with such precision. The Light Division in the Peninsular War, 1811–1814 Tim Saunders Rob Yuill

By the middle of 1811, Brigadier General Robert Craufurd’s Light Division was emerging as the elite of the Peninsular Army and Wellington was seeking opportunities to go over to the offensive, following the expulsion of Marshal Masséna from Portugal. With news of Napoleon’s disaster in Russia and with reinforcements from Britain, Wellington prepared his army to drive the French from the Peninsular. With the allies closing in on all sides, the French fought on into 1814 and the Light Bobs had further fighting before the spoils of peace in a war-weary France could be enjoyed. 770134, $49.95, $32.50, Hardback, 272 pages

19THCENTURY CENTURY• • • •19TH Kingdom in Crisis The Zulu Response to the British- Invasion of 1879

John Laband John Laband’s classic work is the first history of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 to examine in full the complexities of the Zulu response to the British invasion of their kingdom. He does more than substitute a Zulu perspective of the campaign for the British one. He gives a fascinating insight into the social, political and military traditions of the Zulus which made it so difficult for them to withstand the invaders. His compelling account is based on extensive archival research, and is written in vivid detail. He shows how the Zulus were unable to adapt their military methods to counter the British challenge. 155842, $24.95, $16.50, Paperback, 288 pages

Who’s Who in the Anglo Zulu War 1879. Volume 1 The British Adrian Greaves Ian Knight

The Anglo Zulu War continues to attract phenomenal interest. What was meant to be a quick punitive expedition led by Lord Chelmsford turned into a watershed for British Colonial power. The ignominious defeat at Iswandhlwana was a terrible blow to British military pride but the heroic stand at Rourke’s Drift, while a minor event by comparison, allowed the powers-that-be to salvage some honor. This authoritative book covers all the main players, be they military, political or civilian, with concise yet readable individual entries. Individuals such as The Crown Prince Imperial whose actions made an impact all have entries. 154791, $50, $32.50, Hardback, 256 pages

A Handful of Heroes, Rorke’s Drift Facts, Myths and Legends

Katie Stossel Thanks to newly discovered letters and documents, A Handful of Heroes updates the history of the defense of Rorkes Drift, which will forever be one of the most celebrated British feats of arms. Remarkably after such prolonged historical scrutiny, the authors research proves that there is yet more to discover about this famous incident of the Zulu War 1879 and her superbly researched book reveals a number of myths that have distorted what happened during the gallant defense of the small Mission Station. While this in no way denigrates the heroic efforts of the heavily out-numbered defenders, it does help to explain the successful defense against seemingly overwhelming odds. 014892, $26.95, $17.99, Paperback, 224 pages

Victoria’s Harvest The Irish Soldier in the Zulu War of 1879 David Truesdale John Young

The tradition of Irish soldiers in the British Army can be traced back many hundreds of years. Henry V at Agincourt faced a French army with his band of brothers that included a unit of Irish hoblairs. By the time of Agincourt the numbers remaining would have been much less, but contributed to an Irish presence nonetheless. The inclusion of Irish soldiers in the Army continued unabated into reign of Queen Victoria and the General Army Return notes the following breakdown of soldiers by place of birth: English 69.7%, Scottish 8%, Irish 20.9%. This book tells the story of some of the Irish men who served as soldiers in Queen Victoria’s Army, before, during and after the Zulu War. 29452H, $79.95, $51.99, Hardback, 376 pages

The Anatomy of the Zulu Army From Shaka to Cetshwayo, 1818–1879

Ian Knight Forces of the independent Zulu kingdom inflicted a crushing defeat on British imperial forces at Isandlwana in January 1879. The Zulu Army was not, however, a professional force, unlike its British counterpart, but was the mobilized manpower of the Zulu state. Ian Knight details how the Zulu army functioned and ties its role firmly to the broader context of Zulu society and culture. In the early nineteenth century, King Shaka began to reform his forces into regular military units. This book analyzes the Zulu’s fighting methods, weapons, and philosophy, all of which led to the disciplined force that faced the British army in 1879. 329102, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 282 Pages

The War Museum of the Boer Republics The Anglo-Boer War in 100 Objects brings the victories and the tragedies – and the full extent of the human drama behind this war – to life through 100 iconic artifacts. The book follows the course of the war but also highlights specific themes, such as British and Boer weaponry, medical services and POW camps, as well as major figures on both sides. 734037, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 264 pages

• WORLD WAR I • Dreadnoughts and Super-Dreadnoughts

Chris McNab When HMS Dreadnought was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1906 this revolutionary new class of big-gun iron-clad warship immediately changed the face of naval warfare. The Admiralty realized that as soon as the ship was revealed to the global naval community Britain would be a in race to stay ahead, and so the first dreadnoughts were built in record time. Other countries, notably Germany, soon began to lay down dreadnoughts. The culmination of this arms race would be the confrontation of the British and German fleets at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 – the greatest clash of naval firepower in history. 240862, $49.95, $32.50, Hardback, 224 pages

Gotha Aircraft From the London Bomber to the Flying Wing Jet Fighter

Andreas Metzmacher The Gothaer Waggonfabrik (GWF), originally a German rail vehicle manufacturer, entered the aircraft industry in 1913. As with ‘Fokker’ regarding fighter aircraft, the name ‘Gotha’ is synonymous with German bomber aircraft of the Great War. Even successful seaplanes and the world’s first asymmetric aircraft were a part of GWF’s production at this time, and lasted until the postwar Treaty of Versailles forced the abandonment of aircraft production. Aircraft could not be built in Gotha again until 1933. GWF did get development contracts for the Luftwaffe, but they were essentially incidental side issues and not of the lucrative mass construction variety. 557068, $35, $22.99, Hardback, 144 pages

The French on the Somme 1914 – 30 June 1916 From Serre to the River Somme

David O’Mara For many British visitors, the fighting in the Somme starts on 1 July 1916 and few consider what happened in the area before the British took over the line. In fact there was extensive fighting during the opening phase of the war, as both the French and Germans tried to outflank each other. Through the autumn and winter there was a struggle to hold the best tactical ground, with small scale but ferocious skirmishes from Beaumont Hamel to the Somme. The conflict in what became known as the Glory Hole, close to the well known Lochnagar Crater, was particularly prolonged. Evidence of the fighting, mainly in the form of a large mine crater field, is visible today. 722409, $26.95, $17.99, Paperback, 264 pages

The German Army on the Western Front 1915

Jack Sheldon Jack Sheldon examines the German mindset at the close of 1914 when it became apparent that a quick victory was no longer a possibility. In a reversal of roles, the French launched major offensives in Champagne and Artois, while the British Army went on the offensive in support at Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge and Loos. Such was the Allied pressure that the only German offensive in 1915 was at Ypres in April using gas on a large scale for the first time. Using his skill at archival research, Sheldon describes how the 1915 experience shaped the German approach to the cataclysmic battles that lay ahead, leading to the ultimate, previously unthinkable defeat of the Kaisers Germany. 08512A, $32.95, $21.50, Paperback, 336 pages

The German Army at Ypres 1914

Jack Sheldon This book will be the first complete account of the operations of the German army in the battles north of Lille in the late autumn of 1914. The main emphasis will be placed on the battles around Ypres against the Old Contemptibles of the BEF, but the fighting against the French and Belgian armies will also be featured. The book uses the comprehensive histories of the participating German regiments found in the Kriegsarchiv in Munich and the Hauptstaatsarchiv in Stuttgart, and focuses on some of the most bitterly disputed battles of the first three months of the war, when the Germans strained to achieve a breakthrough and the BEF resisted heroically, at the price of its own destruction. 014526, $34.95, $22.99, Paperback, 400 pages

• WORLDWAR WAR1 I• • • WORLD The True Story of the Christmas Truce British and German Eyewitness Accounts from World War I Anthony Richards Eva Burke

On Christmas Eve 1914, a group of German soldiers laid down their arms, lit lanterns and started to sing Christmas carols. The British troops in nearby trenches responded by singing songs of their own. The next day, men from both sides met in No Man’s Land. They shook hands, took photos and exchanged food and souvenirs. Some even played improvised football games, kicking around empty bully-beef cans and using helmets for goalposts. In this fascinating new book, historian Anthony Richards has brought together hundreds of first-hand reminiscences from those who were there – including previously unpublished German accounts – to cast fresh light on this extraordinary episode. 386146, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 256 pages

Richard van Emden After the outbreak of the Great War, boys as young as twelve were caught up in a national wave of patriotism and, in huge numbers, volunteered to serve their country. In this, the final update of his ground-breaking book, Richard van Emden reveals new hitherto unknown stories and adds many more unseen images. He also proves that far more boys enlisted in the British Army under-age than originally estimated, providing compelling evidence that as many as 400,000 served. 01163B, $49.95, $32.50, Hardback, 488 pages

In 1917 it was involved in the advance on the Hindenburg Line and was then transferred to the North Sea coast, with the intention of taking part in the daring plan to launch a major amphibious landing behind the German lines in the summer. Asia in Flanders Fields Indians and Chinese on the Western Front, 1914–1920

Dominiek Dendooven The First World War brought peoples from five continents to support the British and French Allies on the Western Front. Many were from colonial territories in the British and French empires, and the largest contingents were Indians and Chinese - some 140,000. It is a story of the encounter with the European ‘other’, including the civilian European local populations, often marred by racism, discrimination and xenophobia both inside and outside the military command, but also lightened by moving and enduring ‘human’ social relationships. This is a vivid and original contribution to imperial decline from the First World War. 763334, $49.95, $32.50, Hardback, 248 pages

• WORLD WAR II • Island Nijmegen to Arnhem

Tim Saunders Having fought their way up fifty miles of Hell’s Highway and through Nijmegen, XXX Corps was just ten miles from Arnhem and the 1st British Airborne Division. Here it found itself on an island of flat land between the Waal at Nijmegen and the Rhine at Arnhem, the situation was increasingly bad. The Guards Armoured and then 43rd Wessex Infantry Division took turns to lead before reaching the Rhine opposite the paratroopers in the Oosterbeek Perimeter. Attempts to cross the Rhine by the Polish Paras and the Dorset Regiment had little success, but meanwhile, the guns of XXX Corps ensured the survival of the Perimeter. 528619, $16.95, $11.50, Paperback, 160 pages

Yet despite the deployment of thousands airborne troops the plan failed spectacularly and the war continued well into 1945. Famously depicted in the blockbuster film A Bridge Too Far (1977) the operation, code named Market Garden, has attained iconic status and is the subject of countless books, documentaries and articles, and is subjected to more speculation than almost any other Allied operation of the war. After 70 years it is time to reevaluate the importance, impact and outcome of Market Garden. 390465, $37.95, $24.99, Paperback, 312 pages

Cherbourg

Andrew Rawson Following the landings in Normandy, one of the Allies main concerns was how to supply the expanding beachhead. Having cut off the Cotentin peninsula, General Bradley turned his attentions to the port of Cherbourg, the deep-water port nearest to the American landing beaches. However, Hitler had given specific orders that the port must be held until the last man. This book details this important, yet little known battle, giving a detailed and illustrated account of the events around Cherbourg in June 1944. Visitors to the area will also be able to visit the key sites on a series of tours around the peninsula. 150830, $19.99, $12.99, Paperback, 160 pages

Beyond Rome to the Alps Across the Arno and Gothic Line, 1944–1945

Jon Diamond Rome was liberated but the Italian campaign had another eleven months to run. The US 5th and British 8th Armies drove across the Arno River, capturing Florence. The Wehrmacht’s 10th and 14th Armies eluded destruction, withdrawing into the Gothic Line in the Northern Apennines. The 8th Army penetrated this German defensive belt. Yet the Allied campaign stalled due to a lethal combination of supply, manpower shortages, the early winter and the rugged terrain. The Aspring offensive saw 8th Army breakthrough the Argenta Gap into the Po Valley, while 5th Army captured Bologna. Crossing the Po River, the Allies fanned out across Northern Italy before the Nazi surrender. 727091, $28.95, $18.99, Paperback, 224 pages

The Last German Victory Operation Market Garden, 1944

Aaron Bates Operation Market Garden is one of the most famous and controversial Allied failures of the Second World War. Many books have been written on the subject seeking to explain the defeat, but little attention has been paid to the influence that combat doctrine and training had upon the relative performance of the forces involved. It is this aspect that Aaron Bates emphasizes in this perceptive, closely argued, and absorbing reevaluation of the battle. This thought-provoking study sheds fresh light on the course of the fighting around Arnhem and should lead to a deeper understanding of one of the most remarkable episodes in the final stage of the Second World War in western Europe. 000765, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 216 pages

Idris James Barwick Elizabeth Garland Idris (Taff) James was a driver in the Royal Army Service Corps and one of the thousands of young British soldiers taken prisoner by the Japanese in early 1942. His account of the conditions and suffering endured by his fellow prisoners and himself makes for the most extraordinary and disturbing reading. His description of the courage of his fellow captives and, regrettably, the failings of some in authority, give grounds for serious thought. If you only read one book by a POW of the Japanese, this is the one. 01442A, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 304 pages

• WORLD WAR II • Countering Hitler’s Spies British Military Intelligence, 1940–1945

Men Amidst the Madness British Technology Development in World War II

Stephen Wynn When the military aspect of the Second World War is discussed, there is one aspect, rarely mentioned and never quite fully appreciated, which played a massive role in winning the war. The Double Cross system, operated by MI5, involved capturing German spies who had been sent to the United Kingdom and offering them the opportunity to become double agents and spy for the British against the Germans. Most agreed, although the alternative wasn’t that pleasant: refusing to become a spy would have almost certainly resulted in death. 725523, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 192 pages

• WORLD WAR II • U-48: The Most Successful U-Boat of the Second World War

Franz Kurowski At the outset of the Second World War, Dönitz argued for a 300-strong U-boat fleet, since his force of 57 U-boats ‘could only inflict pin-pricks against British seaborne trade’. In August 1939, U-48 left Germany, commanded by ‘Vaddi’ Schultze, to take up a waiting position around England. It scored its first success on 5 September, when it torpedoed the British freighter Royal Sceptre, then the Winkleigh on 8 September. By 1 August 1941, U-48, the most successful boat of the Second World War, had sunk 56 merchant ships of 322,478 gross tons and one corvette. 01431A, $26.95, $17.99, Paperback, 208 pages

The Lancastria Tragedy Sinking and Cover-up – June 1940

Stephen Wynn The story behind the sinking of the Lancastria comes in two parts: the sinking of the ship itself and the people who died, and the aftermath which led to allegations of a government cover up ordered by Winston Churchill. There is an ‘officially accepted’ list of those who died, but allegations that hundreds more went down with the ship, and have not been accounted for, still linger to this very day. Churchill placed s a ‘D’ Notice on the tragic events, thereby restricting the press from reporting it. Those who survived t were told not to speak about their experience. The question has to be asked, why are official documents in relation to the matter being kept secret until the year 2040? 706638, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 184 pages

From Hunter to Hunted The U-Boat in the Atlantic, 1939–1943

Bernard Edwards In the early stages of the Second World War, Donitz’s U-boats generally adhered to Prize Rules, surfacing before attacking and making every effort to preserve the lives of their victims’ crews. But, with the arming of merchant men and greater risk of damage or worse, they increasingly attacked without warning. Expert naval author and historian Bernard Edwards traces the course of the battle of the Atlantic through a series of thrilling engagement case studies. 763594, $34.95, $22.99, Hardback, 208 pages

Schnellboote A Complete Operational History

Lawrence Paterson The Kriegsmarine’s Schnellboote were the primary German naval attack units in coastal waters throughout WW2. Operating close to their various bases they became a devastatingly effective weapon in nearly all the Kriegsmarine’s theaters of war, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and English Channel. In addition to interception and attack, they were also used for minelaying, landing sabotage troops and general escort duties. As the War progressed, S-boats suffered from the increased Allied mastery of the seas and skies but they were a formidable foe right to the end; this new book is the first to do full justice to their record of success. 08228A, $26.95, $17.99, Paperback, 352 pages

• WORLD WAR II • Mosquito Mayhem de Havilland’s Wooden Wonder in Action in WWII

Martin W Bowman The Mosquito was probably World War IIs most versatile combat aircraft. This book contains hundreds of first-hand accounts from many of the twoman crews who flew in them; pilots and navigators. It portrays the dramatic experiences of flying in its many roles as pathfinder, night fighter, reconnaissance aircraft, precision bombing and low-level ground attack aircraft. It describes many of the RAFs most audacious raids on prime but difficult targets where carpet bombing by heavy bombers was likely to be ineffective and cause unnecessary casualties to civilians. It is a remarkable record of the aircraft and the men that flew them. 08506A, $28.95, $18.99, Paperback, 280 pages

Kamikaze Japan’s Last Bid for Victory

Adrian Stewart In this fascinating book the author examines the Japanese concept of Kamikaze, the deliberate self-sacrifice of life in the cause of victory. This attitude, while incomprehensible to their American and European enemies, has its roots in the samurai tradition of fighting for their master or nation regardless of personal safety. Graphic description of these suicide attacks and the resulting loss of life and ships litter this revealing and shocking book. The author’s in depth study of the historic and cultural reasons for this seemingly reckless courage is important and illuminating. 000246, $26.95, $17.99, Paperback, 224 pages

Luftwaffe X-Planes German Experimental Aircraft of World War II

Manfred Griehl Despite the Allied authorities ban on research, countless aircraft were designed and tested by the Luftwaffe and German manufacturers before World War II. The research took place at secret evaluation sites. After the outbreak of the war this work continued. Many projects remained on the drawing board or at prototype stage because either they were deemed unsuitable or, as is the case with most of those in this selection, the developers simply ran out of time and the projects never went into production. Renowned aviation expert Manfred Griehl has painstakingly assembled a valuable selection of images which shows the remarkable range of projects dreamed up by the German designers. 018258, $17.95, $11.99, Paperback, 80 pages

How the World Allowed Hitler to Proceed with the Holocaust Tragedy at Evian

Tony Matthews In July 1938 the United States, Great Britain and thirty other countries participated in a vital conference at Évianles-Bains, France, to discuss the persecution and possible emigration of the European Jews. North Korea Invades the South Across the 38th Parallel, June 1950

Gerry van Tonder It is more than 25 years since the end of the Cold War. The battle lines are no longer drawn, but they linger on in conflict zones. In an era of massproduced AK-47s and ICBMs, one such flashpoint was Korea. Without warning, at 4.00 a.m. on 25 June 1950, North Korean artillery laid down a heavy bombardment on the Ongjin Peninsula.

The first in a six-volume series on the Korean War, this publication considers those first few fateful days in June 1950 that would cement north–south antagonism to this day, the pariah state that is communist North Korea a seemingly increasing threat to an already tenuous global peace. 708182, $22.95, $14.99, Paperback, 128 pages

Victoria Cross Winners of the Korean War

During the course of the Korean War, the Victoria Cross was awarded on just four occasions, although two other men were also awarded the equivalent George Cross. The Victoria Cross was twice awarded posthumously, with a third recipient dying in 1986 and the fourth dying in July 2018. Each of the actions which led to the awards are discussed in this book, which in the case of Bill Speakman, includes an interview he gave to the author in 2017. 71331A, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 176 pages

N S Nash CBE The combatants in the three Vietnam wars from 1945 to 1975 employed widely contrasting supply methods. The Last of Africa’s Cold War Conflicts Portuguese Guinea and its Guerilla Insurgency

Al J Venter Portugal was the first European country to colonize Africa. It was also the last to leave, almost five centuries later. During the course of what Lisbon called its “civilizing mission in Africa” the Portuguese weathered numerous insurrections, but none as severe as the guerrilla war first launched in Angola in 1961 and two years later in Portuguese Guinea. While Angola had a solid economic infrastructure, that did not hold for the tiny West African enclave that was to become Guinea-Bissau. Both Soviets and Cubans believed that because that tiny colony- roughly the size of Belgium - had no resources and a small population, that Lisbon would soon capitulate. They were wrong. 772985, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 240 pages

Putin’s Virtual War Russia’s Subversion and Conversion of America, Europe and the World Beyond

William Nester As the Kremlin’s latest ruler, Putin, like most of his predecessors, is as realistic as he is ruthless. He knows the limits of Russian hard and soft power while constantly trying to expand them. He is doing whatever he can to advance Russian national interests as he interprets them. In Putin’s mind, Russia can rise only as far as the West can fall. And on multiple fronts he is methodically advancing to those ends. Losing Arab Hearts and Minds The Coalition, Al Jazeera and Muslim Public Opinion

Steve Tatham From November 2002 to May 2003, Steve Tatham worked alongside American military planners in the Gulf, coordinating the huge media campaign that foreshadowed and accompanied the eventual invasion of Iraq. He witnessed how, in advance of the outbreak of hostilities, the US planned to win over skeptical Arab hearts and minds. Yet as the campaign unfolded, Tatham, the Royal Navy’s public spokesman in Iraq, saw how differently the British and Americans regarded the media and how badly journalists from the Arab world, in particular from Al-Jazeera satellite television, were treated in comparison to those from coalition nations. His book is highly critical of how the US handled its information war. 557238, $25, $16.50, Hardback, 256 pages

The Yompers With 45 Commando in the Falklands War

Ian Gardiner Called to action in April 1982, the men of 45 Commando Royal Marines assembled from around the world to sail 8,000 miles to recover the Falkland Islands from Argentine invasion. Lacking helicopters and short of food, they ‘yomped’ in appalling weather carrying overloaded rucksacks across the roughest terrain. They then fought and won the highly successful and fierce night battle for Two Sisters, a 1,000 foot mountain which was the key to the defensive positions around Stanley. The first to be written by a company commander in the Falklands War, the book gives a compelling description of the infantry fighting and offers penetrating insights into the realities of war at higher levels. 853423, $24.95, $16.50, Paperback, 224 Pages

Superpowers, Rogue States and Terrorism Countering the Security Threats to the West

Paul Moorcraft Numerous books have attempted to assess the generational threat from Jihadist-inspired terrorism but few offer any positive advice on solutions. Islamist terrorism is today a fact of life and its potency is vividly illustrated by outrages in otherwise secure Western democracies not to mention overt ISIL aggression in the Middle East and many African States. Without a far better understanding of the Islamic religion, its beliefs, value, hierarchy and different sects, countering the existential threat will be greatly hindered, not to say nearly impossible. 894723, $32.95, $21.50, Hardback, 208 pages

He proves a direct link between the now-defunct South African apartheid regime’s nuclear program and Tehran’s current nuclear ambitions. 033335, $29.95, $19.50, Hardback, 460 pages

Military Operations from Kosovo to Kabul The Unique Experiences of a Combat Lawyer

James Nelson In this highly unusual role for a lawyer, the author has participated in treaties from Kosovo to Afghanistan. Unlike the short, sharp Kosovo experience in central Europe, this war in central Asia was the longest in the history of the USA, although for the British it was just the latest in a succession of operations going back two centuries to the ‘Great Game’. Trying to apply the law, balancing the need for aggression with compliance with Western notions of human rights, and vain efforts to win over the hearts and minds of a proud but impoverished people historically blighted by conflict proved to be unimaginably fraught. 004619, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 176 pages

The journey culminates in the fight against ISIS, in which the author is able to lead the SOF task force under his command to hasten the Caliphate’s eventual demise. Milburn tells his story with self-effacing candor, describing his own struggles with the isolation of command and post-combat trauma. 750556, $32.95, $21.50, Hardback, 336 pages

Out of the Siege of Sarajevo Memoirs of a Former Yugoslav

Jasna Levinger-Goy Set during the horrors of the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the very heart of Europe in 1992, this book offers a personal story of a family of Jewish origin who identified as Yugoslavs. It traces their journey over a period of ten years, starting with their life in Sarajevo under siege and ending in the UK. Without belonging to any of the warring factions, this story takes place on the front lines in the heart of Sarajevo. We are presented with people caught in the crossfire of politics outside their control. It is tangled with a sense of loss – of home, country, identity. Set against the backdrop of a brutal conflict, it is about the very human cost of war. 09862A, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 192 pages

The Iraq War Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003

Tom Cooper This title covers the Syrian Civil War, starting with the unrest within the Syrian population and a series of mass demonstrations within the context of wider protest movements (Arab Spring). The government of Syria deployed the full force of its military, its intelligence apparatus, and para-military groups, launching an unprecedented crackdown that resulted in the arrest, detention, and killing of many thousands. Despite its brutality, this effort backfired: it provoked mass desertions of the Syrian military and an armed uprising. Drawing on extensive research, including firsthand accounts, this book provides a compelling overview of the first three years of the ongoing conflict in Syria. 294109, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 80 pages

Anthony Tucker-Jones The Iraq War is a visual record of the American-led Operation Iraqi Freedom of 2003, which resulted in the dramatic overthrow of Dictator Saddam Hussein. In a striking sequence of photographs Anthony Tucker-Jones shows how this was achieved by the American and British armed forces in a lightning campaign of just two weeks. But the photographs also show the disastrous aftermath when the swift victory was undermined by the outbreak of the Iraqi insurgency - in the Shia south, in Baghdad and the Sunni Triangle, and in Fallujah where two ferocious battles were fought. 591659, $29.95, $19.50, Paperback, 160 pages

Small Wars and their Influence on Nation States 1500 to the Present

William Urban After 1500, European warfare was repeatedly revolutionized by new weapons, new methods for supplying armies in the field, improved fortifications, and new tactics. This allowed empires to grow, with the Ottomans expanding into the Middle East and Africa, Britain dominating India, and Russia conquering the steppe. The dynamics of resistance to this expansion were remarkably similar to what we see today in ISIS, Afghan and Pakistani Talibans, and various jihadist groups that are more tribal than Islamist. Such resistance continues to be met by world powers who misunderstand the motives of the people that take up arms against them, and this details both more and less effective methods they use. 837928, $49.95, $32.50, Hardback, 288 Pages

David Pratt Armed with stones, Kalashnikovs, and the scarcely believable martyrdom of the suicide bomber, a generation of Palestinians has confronted one of the most lethal armies in the Middle East in a battle that has stunned and horrified the world. For almost two decades the Intifada has been the byword for Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation. But, for all its familiar usage in the media, many people remain unclear as to what the Intifada really is, or how it began. Part reflection, part reportage, David Pratt, takes the reader on a journey across the frontlines of the Palestinian uprising. 033632, $16.95, $11.50, Paperback, 288 pages

Deadlines on the Front Line Travels with a Veteran War Correspondent

Paul Moorcraft As a war correspondent and paramilitary policeman, Moorcraft was a magnet for drama and action. His descriptions of sometimes tragic and often hilarious escapades in war torn countries literally from A (Afghanistan) to Z (Zimbabwe) are self-effacingly entertaining. His light-hearted approach disguises a thoroughly perceptive and analytical mind. Reporting on wars in over thirty combat zones in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe, this is his book of hazardous travels to strange, often little-known places, meeting people who were often all too keen to lock him up or try and kill him. It offers an intelligent insight into the turbulent world of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. 739490, $42.95, $27.99, Hardback, 256 pages

• MODERN WAR• • • MODELING Laughter is the Best Weapon The Remarkable Adventures of an Unconventional Soldier Charles Ritchie HRH Anne The Princess Royal

Postings to the Yemen, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, and more gave the author many opportunities to demonstrate that the ability to laugh – and make others laugh – is an invaluable skill in an officer’s kitbag. Here, he abandons the popular trend for military heroism, and instead leads the reader on a light-hearted and self-deprecating journey. If you prefer your military history more entertainingly honest than earnestly intellectual and your soldiers hilariously slapstick rather than heroically stoic, then this is the book for you. Full of career-limiting cock-ups and bizarre near-death experiences, these anecdotes deliver a hugely entertaining glimpse into his life and career. 091886, $39.95, $25.99, Hardback, 216 pages

Britain’s Future Navy

Nick Childs What kind of Royal Navy does Britain need now? The 21st century promises to be one of huge uncertainties and challenges for the senior service. Does Britain have the right naval strategy to cope with emerging threats and, if so, does the Navy have the right ships and enough of them to implement it? Nick Childs looks at the changing strategic environment. He asks what Britain’s role in the world could or should be – is she still interventionist? If so, should our forces be designed purely to work with US, UN or Western European forces? What are the options for a naval strategy?
