Students gain theory and practice of how media affects individuals and cultures and how media can be used for socially constructive purposes. They create applied solutions for sustainable change. A certificate in Media Psychology allows students to choose between an emphasis in Brand Psychology & Audience Engagement or Media Neuroscience.

Clinical Psychology The PhD in Clinical Psychology program is strongly aligned with the university’s mission to create a more humane, just, and sustainable world, and the university’s values that include academic excellence, community, diversity, and social justice. Consistent with these values, a core mission of our program is to foster inclusion of students from under-represented populations. These populations include students living in small communities, rural, or remote locations of the United States, students currently in the military or spouses of military members, adult learners with families, and students whose ongoing participation in their current communities cannot be halted for doctoral study elsewhere. These are student populations who are often unable to enter the field through preparation at a traditional university campus, yet these are the future psychologists for which the discipline and profession has expressed an urgent need. In addition, our program aims to graduate entry level scholar-practitioner psychologists who bring social justice values to their work as licensed health service professionals. Consistent with this overarching aim, we have four specific aims for our students, which must be achieved by the time of graduation. 1. Students will demonstrate doctoral-level discipline specific knowledge that represents the scientific and theoretical knowledge areas of the discipline of psychology (i.e., history and systems of psychology and the affective, biological, cognitive, developmental, and social bases of behavior). 2. Students will demonstrate doctoral-level conceptualization, evaluation, analysis, and integration of discipline-specific knowledge across the curriculum. 3. Students will demonstrate doctoral-level ability to understand and critique research; design, conduct, analyze, and communicate theoretically informed research; and conduct research in a manner that is culturally sensitive and consistent with legal code and ethical standards, including the APA ethics code. 4. Students will demonstrate doctoral-level competence in the professionwide competencies, including conducting evidence-based diagnosis, assessment, and psychotherapy; and applying theory and research to develop case conceptualizations, treatment plans, and interventions that are consistent with legal and ethical standards and individual and cultural diversity factors.

Media Psychology PHD, MEDIA PSYCHOLOGY Media psychologists study the impact of historical and emerging media as they influence individuals, groups, and cultures. Media psychology addresses issues of how people of many backgrounds experience, develop, and respond to technology and mediated communication. As the first doctoral degree in media psychology in the United States, this program produces graduates who are in demand for their unique skills. Media students and alumni put their education to work in fields such as journalism, entertainment, marketing, public relations, social media, social psychology, political psychology, software development, public policy, and education.

MA, MEDIA PSYCHOLOGY The master’s program in media psychology focuses on the use and misuse of digital media, particularly social and immersive media, and its impact on individuals, groups, and society. Students work with scholars and practitioners in a unique online environment where they explore both psychological theory and application design. Graduates of the master’s program are developing strategic and innovative careers in fields such as media communications; branding, social marketing and advertising; information design; public policy and advocacy; human service and healthcare; academia; and many more.

CT, MEDIA PSYCHOLOGY Fielding offers a 3-course, online certificate in Media Psychology designed for professionals in diverse fields. In today’s fast-changing world, psychological theory and research can be applied to enhance or analyze the impacts of emerging media, gauging its effects on individuals and cultures. You will analyze how media and technology can best be used for socially constructive ends; and gain practical knowledge, working to create applied solutions for sustainable change.

BE A PIONEER IN AN EMERGING FIELD The Fielding PhD in Media Psychology provides a comprehensive study in an emerging and exciting field. Media Psychology applies the psychology of human behavior and emotion to media and technology impact, design and distribution. Our students come from a variety of professional experiences and academic backgrounds with the common goal of applying psychological science to the media and technology landscape. From documentary filmmakers and educators to brand marketers and social advocates, students find their intellectual home in media psychology and leave equipped to achieve their goals and make a difference.

PROGRAMS Programs WHAT IS DIFFERENT? Media psychology starts with psychology. Where traditional communication, media studies, sociology, or psychology programs focus on process or isolate media from human experience, media psychology offers the answer to the ‘why,’ integrating the expertise of psychology with in-depth knowledge of media and technology. Students explore the ways in which cognition, emotion, and instinct can influence human responses to different media stimuli and alter technological impact. Students use these skills to anticipate consumption and use patterns, engagement, and access and look for leverageable solutions to global problems, from smart technology design to economic, social, and environmental impact.

WHAT WE DO Media psychologists are finding new roles across multiple domains. Fortune 100 companies, for example, increasingly recognize the need for applying media psychology to organizational communications, structure, products and strategy. Our graduates have innovated new roles working with companies like Mozilla, Fox Films, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom and Disney among others, as well as crafting new business and consulting opportunities and developing successful advocacy campaigns. Special projects within the program give students the opportunity to have real-life experience during the course of their education. Recent projects include partnering with the Department of Defense deconstructing the narrative, cognitive and neuroscience triggers of terrorism in the social space and developing brand-aligned corporate social responsibility programs for companies like Grub Hub. Students also participate alongside faculty and practitioners to present in forums such as Media Week, Digital Hollywood, and academic conferences such as the Pop Culture Association and the American Psychological Association. A recent student-faculty collaboration at the Pop Culture Association resulted in the publication of a book on the Fandom of Mad Men. Recent presentations at the American Psychological Association created multiple offers from publishers for books on brand psychology, immersive reality and media ethics.

BALANCE YOUR STUDIES WITH YOUR BUSY LIFE You don’t have to move or quit your job to study at Fielding. Coursework is offered in a distributed environment, making it possible for you to balance your studies with the demands of work, family, and community commitments.
