Angela Quinn - Cool Kids First Aid in Haddon Angela conducted one of he wonderful sessions for the home schoolers group recently at the Haddon Community Learning Centre. She has worked in both the Education and Care sector as an Educator and Centre Director as well as a First Aid Program Manager/Trainer with more than 15 years combined experience. Angela has brought together her extensive experience to provide age appropriate, fun and interactive programs for children to learn essential life saving skills. Her passion about working with children shone through in this session that provided the children and adults her attended with a solid foundation in using appropriate skills in an emergency situation. Angela is an outgoing, fun and passionate person with a love for travel and family time. The day with Angela was so informative and highly recommended.

CLEANING HINTS Clean your windows with vinegar. Use white vinegar to brighten your windows. Mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with 4 litres of water and dispense into a spray bottle. Squirt on and wipe away with a clean microfibre cloth (not paper towels, which can cause streaking). Cleaning your kettle. Slice one whole lemon up into thin rounds and put them in your kettle. Fill your kettle with cold water so it covers the affected scaly area of your kettle. Boil the water with the lemons in it. Boil once, leave for half hour, boil a second time, then rinse out with clean cold water. Your kettle should now be clean and descaled. Other natural ways of cleaning a kettle is by adding half a teaspoon of citric acid to a kettle full of water and let it boil, then rinse. Early Spring - a Short Story by Jeanine I’m just sitting enjoying the early Spring sunshine. After a long, cold and wet winter the feel of the sun on my face is a welcome relief. Evidence that Spring has finally arrived is everywhere. The bright yellow of the blossoming wattle stands out in stark contrast to the drab green and grey of the surrounding stringy bark eucalypt trees. Jonquils and daffodils that have been so abundant in the garden for the past few weeks are slowly being overtaken by tulips and hyacinths and the fruit trees are starting to blossom with their hope of a bumper crop. Blue wrens that have made a nest in the Blue Pacific flutter in and out of the bush and chitter in protest at the little dog wandering too close to their tree while a magpie sits in a nearby gum warbling happily to itself, also enjoying the sun. The breeze is still a little on the cool side but is gentle enough to just move the long wind chime to play it’s bell like tunes, which is all that interrupts the peace of the morning. But that’s OK; their chimes have a calming effect which goes hand in hand with the warmth of the sun. A pair of wood ducks that have made themselves at home in our dam waddle up, quacking and cheeping quietly to each other, begging for scraps of bread when they make it up to the veranda. They have made themselves so much at home here, they sit at the door sleeping with their heads tucked under their wings, knowing they are safe with us. Suddenly the quiet is broken by a commotion down the other side of the dam as a couple of currawongs have a noisy argument over territory. There is a constant competition between the magpies, currawongs, choughs and crows for food to feed their newly hatched young; their warbles, cries and raucous caws a symphony in the morning. The sound of hubby pottering around in the work shed makes me feel guilty because I know there are things I should be doing too. I have seedlings to plant and dahlia tubers that need to be separated and replanted. The weeds didn’t go into hibernation during the winter and need to be cleared. The sound of a lawnmower in the distance gives testament that others in the neighbourhood are also taking advantage of the fine weather; knowing that it’s all going to turn sour again later that night. But for now, I’m happy to just sit quietly and absorb the morning warmth of early spring.
Geoff’s Big Walk event is being held on Tuesday 8 October at Lake Wendouree Foreshore, Ballarat. It is a chance to walk in the shoes of an amputee, who is raising awareness of amputation and healthy living. So why not come down and show your own community’s support in honour of National Amputee Awareness Week! About Geoff’s Big Walk This event will see Geoff Chandler, an amputee and passionate Limbs 4 Life Ambassador will walk 50kms that day in order to put a spotlight on amputation and amputees in your region. Geoff’s Big Walk is being supported by charity Limbs 4 Life, Australia’s peak body for amputees, during National Amputee Awareness Week 4-11 October. This week is dedicated to celebrating the 9,000 Australians who lose a limb each year. How you can help Geoff’s Big Walk is an opportunity to raise awareness and encourage healthy living in the local community. It will provide a chance for members of the community to come along and say hello to Geoff, walk a lap or more with him, and show support for amputees in the region. As an important local organisation we are wondering if it would be possible to promote this event to your stakeholders. Host a sausage sizzle for us, hand out ribbons, come along on the day and walk with Geoff and members of your local community. Victoria’s one million people aged 60 years and older will be celebrated when the 37th Victorian Seniors Festival kicks off this October. Commencing with Celebration Day on Sunday 6 October, this Victorian Government initiative will see more than 2,500 free and low-cost events and activities take place across the state. This year’s theme is Get into it which encourages older Victorians, irrespective of experience or mobility, to learn new skills, make new friends and take part in fun-filled activities. The month-long Festival features a range of entertainment, tours, workshops and experiences across sports, wellness, education and the arts. Highlights also include the 2019 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards ceremony on Tuesday 22 October. Welcome to Our Term 4, 2019 Course Guide Well the year is certainly whizzing past isn't it? I cannot believe that it is now Term 4 and just a matter of a few weeks before Christmas! We have some lovely artistic offerings this term to usher in spring. With a focus on some new art classes with Shellabelle Oconnor (see example below). The colours of this flow work are just beautiful and they are such a surprise! It is a great longer course so you can learn so many of the techniques involved. It is easy and relaxing.

Following changes to national training rules, assessment for online Food Safety Training now has two components: a series of online questions to assess the student’s knowledge and a assessed workplace practical skills assignment. You can do your certificate online and start any time and also have the convenience of finishing it in your own time. If you don’t have access to a computer, you can complete this part of the course in the Centre’s computer lab. The workplace assignment is completed on the job, in a real or simulated workplace environment, and observed by a suitably qualified 3rd party observer. The observer needs to hold a food safety qualification that is at an equal or higher level than the course you are taking. Your certificate will be emailed to you when you have completed all the modules required. Simply come into the centre and fill in the enrolment form and pay the fee. We will then email you a link to commence the course online. The cost will depend on the level of certificate and whether you need to use the Centre's kitchen as a simulated workplace with an assessor. Call us fore details. ECO DYEING WORKSHOP Also called eco printing, eco dyeing is a contemporary application of traditional natural dyeing. Eco dyeing uses plants which are enclosed within fabric by bundling, winding over rods or stacked in layers and then steamed or immersed in hot water to extract the pigments and produce a print made with plant dyes.

Indigo dyeing was most popular in the early Edo period in Japan when lower class people where forbidden from wearing silk and it is found in mummy tombs in Ancient Egypt. You will need to book and pay for this course 3 weeks prior and pick up an information sheet as you will be required to bring with you a few items and you can bring additional fabric. You will come away with 2 dyed scarves, plus any other fabrics you may choose to bring along.
You will leave the workshop with two beautiful silk scarves that you have created yourself by learning how to prepare your silk fabrics then arrange leaves and flowers on the cloth. We will explore folding methods for various print outcomes and try different binding materials for varying effects and then ‘set’ them after the dyeing process so that the colouration is permanent and will not fade over time. This workshop is a perfect introduction into the world of eco printing. You will be able to use the skills learnt at this workshop at home to print on new or vintage silk textiles. Mayor’s Message
MAYOR MESSAGE – As the Mayor and a Councillor, I’ve had the pleasure of attending many local events in Golden Plains Shire, however a very special community celebration on 5 August was a personal highlight. Joined by Deputy Mayor Cr Joanne Gilbert, Cr Helena Kirby and Cr David Evans, it was an honour to meet with some of our most dedicated and passionate community members from across the Shire to officially award this year’s Golden Plains Shire Council Community Grants. We congratulate all the recipients of the grants on their success and we thank them for donating their time and energy so generously to give back to our local communities in Golden Plains. This year, 32 grants totalling $110,873 were distributed, supporting these community groups to complete projects worth more than $267,012. Since Council’s Community Grants Program began in 1996, it has supported more than 950 projects worth $6.8 million. It’s a remarkable achievement for a small Shire and reflects the wonderful community spirit in Golden Plains - Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey
HELPING INJURED WILDLIFE Injured wildlife requires expert care, treatment and rehabilitation to recover sufficiently to be returned to the wild. Without this care, wildlife may not recover or may lose their natural behaviours. It is illegal in Victoria to keep sick, injured or orphaned wildlife as a pet. Chat and Chew luncheons will continue to be held on the third Thursday of the month at 12.30 pm. Haddon Community Learning Centre will continue to host the local luncheons so that these popular community get togethers can continue to operate. We hope regular and new community members will come along and join us for a “Chat and Chew” very soon. Please note we require an RSVP by the Tuesday lunchtime of the third week in the month so as we know numbers for catering and therefore cut down on any over or under supply and wastage. Starting a Business Later in Life – Mature Age Entrepreneurs Conference. There are many reasons and many advantages to starting a business later in life. This half day event will feature a keynote address by internationally recognised entrepreneurship educator and researcher, Professor Alex Maritz.. Meet people who have started businesses later in life. A panel discussion relating to entrepreneurship will be followed by guest speakers addressing financial planning for self-employment and maintaining a positive work-life balance. Indeed, Australia recently ranked #3 in the world amongst developed economies for the highest % of mature aged people engaged in early stage entrepreneurship. RUN FOR A CAUSE Registrations are now open for the Ballarat Foundation's major fundraising event, the Federation University Run for a Cause 2019! The event is the largest mass participation community fun run/walk in the region with all proceeds going directly to local charities. The 2019 event will raise funds for early childhood initiatives, with the aim of ensuring all young children are able to start school free from disadvantage. According to recent AEDC data, nearly one in five children in the Ballarat area start school developmentally vulnerable. Children who are vulnerable face significant challenges long term. Hosted by running legend, Steve Moneghetti, the morning set the scene for what can be expected from the second Run For a Cause fun run event on November 17th. Bigger and better was the message delivered loud and clear by Ballarat Foundation CEO, Matt Jenkins. And it’s all thanks to the brilliant support shown by local businesses who are getting behind not only the event, but importantly the cause of Early Childhood Success. The Federation University Run For a Cause 2019 will this year feature the North Ballarat Sports Club Half Marathon, the first opportunity for runners to participate in a local half marathon for over a decade. Runners and walkers can also choose between the McGrath 10km event or the Petstock 5km run or walk. There’s also an option to get a Petpass and bring along the family dog. And of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without the Golden Nugget Kids Dash, an absolute highlight of the day! The Ballarat Foundation would like to thank our presenting partner Federation University Australia for their support, as well as naming partners North Ballarat Sports Club, McGrath, Petstock and Golden Nugget Bakery.
